We came with a family friend who hadn't tried this restaurant before, but had heard good things. The ambiance is very nice and relaxing - something I would like after work to unwind. The waiter was very nice and told us that their menu had changed and they were open to feedback. He also educated us on their house-made bread that uses some of the grain from a local brewery. Neat! I ordered the Trout, my mother the salmon, our friend got the squash platter. All of us left saying...ehn. A little bit lacking on the taste...It's not that anything was cooked wrong, but I wasn't horribly excited. Our friend's squash platter had some under cooked vegetables - which wouldn't be so bad if vegetables were the side. I really think we hit the restaurant when they were still working the kinks out of their menu, so take this review with a grain of salt. I'll definitely return when I'm in the area - the bread is delicious :) Thank you for your great service and hospitality!

Stumbled across this place one day while we were out. We were lucky enough to walk in for brunch and they were able to accommodate us. Reservations are suggested for all meals. The service is top notch and the food is perfect. We recently went back for dinner and it is just as awesome!! If you are in the area looking for a nice place with a great atmosphere, this restaurant will not disappoint you.

Stopped in for lunch today. My fiancee ordered the butternut squash soup to start off with -- she thought it was excellent. For our entrees, I went with a crispy chicken sandwich, my fiancee ordered the chicken salad sandwich. We both enjoyed our sandwiches, they were very tasty. The fresh cut fries on my plate were outstanding, loved them. We usually don't get dessert at lunch, but decided to do so today. So we shared a caramel apple tart with cinnamon gelato. The gelato was superb, but the tart was somewhat burnt on the bottom. Service was excellent also, our waitress Christina was very friendly and attentive. The only negative I can say about our experience today was that it seemed to take a long time for our food to arrive to our table from the kitchen. But it was lunch time and the place was moderately busy. Overall though, I believe the 1892 East Restaurant & Tavern deserves a strong 4 star rating and we look forward to coming back in the future.

Very nice place, cozy atmosphere. Friendly & helpful staff who know their menu. I ordered the beer flight & just told the bartender to surprise me. She did! I loved her selections. The bread & bean spread was delicious. Great food, fresh & yummy. Highly recommend.

This place is one of the most expensive places I have ever been to. But I must say food was extremely well made. Portions are small and nice. Dessert was not out of the world. Regular choc fudge cake with some strawberry sauce. French press coffee was exceptional

One of the best places in Huntsville to eat. Great atmosphere, good drinks and good food. I highly recommend any of the appetizers and the main course of chicken. We have been there twice and really enjoyed both times.

I thought I was going to miss the former tenants in this historic Five Points (Sazio & Starfish) but I actually like it when I'm so pleasantly surprised. 1892 is one of my favorite spots in Huntsville for lunch. It's frequented by a pretty diverse set from ladies who lunch, to farmers, to lawyers and a few local politicos... and for good reason. The menu is seasonal, but there are staples like the burger and the Flatbreads that aren't to be missed. There's also a great trout dish and the chicken farro is surprisingly good and hearty as well. Also another favorite part of going is the drink menu. Try any of the teas--my favorite is the chocolate mint roiboos, or any of a number of beers and ale (Lexington Kentucky Bourbon ale). As fall approaches I love to come in to pair my ale with Ardbeg and Macallan. The wine list which features a number of staple names like seghesio and matchbook but also some interesting and uncommon ones as well. As a tip for newcomers, I'd recommend getting to know the waitstaff. They're friendly and usually really good with the menu items. If you come in as much as I do, you'll eventually get to know them by name. Questions about any drink on the menu, ask for Ben.

This was a gem... Here is a textbook example of a restaurant which carved out a niche, established a reputation and is now coasting on it. Unless 1892 refocuses on what is important-fresh, quality ingredients, I'm guessing they'll close for "renovations" within the next year. What a shame.

I took my friend out for a birthday lunch yesterday. I went out on a limb and tried a place I have never been before, because of the ratings on yelp. We at lunch close to 1:00pm and there were not many people there. We could easily hear each other talk and our waiter came right away. He was friendly, but did not come by so much it interfered with our conversation. He was happy to help me out with an unusual request, which I appreciated very much. I did not time it, but it seemed like our food came out in 10 minutes ish. I am a vegetarian and as a rule restaurants do not cater to folks like me in Northern Alabama, They had 4 yummy sounding choices. We both ate the mushroom pot pie. It was amazing. Do not think yellow gue and vegetables out of a can. The sauce was clear and tasty. the crust was terrific and the veggies were fresh. I can't wait to go back.

Solid place to go for a nice dinner or brunch. Decor is reminiscent of many a Portlandia sketch ("Put a bird on it" will probably be ringing in your head throughout your entire meal). Everything is beautifully presented, but portions are small. The size is kind of nullified by the delicious free bread and spreads at dinner and the dainty, elegant little free cookies served at brunch. But still, I would have loved more substance to my portobello dish. Staff is courteous and sweet and leaves you to enjoy your meal in peace. Which is kind of nice, but I also love to joke and talk with waiters and they didn't really seem to want to! Were my jokes just off? Was I coming on too strong? We'll never know. Nice place! Pricey, but nice. Probably will try it out again.

I don't mind paying for a good meal as long as it delivers. Service has been less than satisfactory and so have the entrées.

Local sourced and artsy food. Good beer selection. Romantic atmosphere. A little pricey, and portions can be small. Grits-stuffed fried shrimp is my favorite thing on the menu. Service is hit or miss, sometimes I sit there waiting for a drink refill for 10 minutes while my food gets cold. This can usually be avoided if you sit at the bar. Good place for date night, and if you've never been, you've gotta try it! -1 for not being open for Saturday lunch.

I thought the reviews were a little mixed, but we tried this place anyway. Not what we call a "do over". It was okay, but no need to come back. Could be really great, but: - Menu items all a bit heavy - Vegetarian items not real imaginative - Wait staff not real attentive - Atmosphere a little flat Nice selection of local beers though. Could be a lot better if they put in some more effort.

Our table of 4 had the most enjoyable, relaxing time at 1892 East. The food was spectacular, the pricing was very reasonable, the service was terrific, and the atmosphere was lovely. We ordered coffee, tea, sweet potato donuts, chicken fried chicken, burger, shrimp and grits and mimosas, and everything rocked! We stayed for a few hours and loved every minute.

This is the first restaurant in Huntsville I've visited. I'm actually writing this grin their bar having just finished a scrumptious lunch. They have a well crafted seasonal menu an a good selection of regional beers. The staff has been tremendously friendly and excited to talk about their food. Local produce abounds here. I'm trying to figure out how many more meals I'm going to eat here while in Huntsville. Make the trip, it's worth it.

Really good burgers and salads, but you can't go wrong with anything on their menu. Great service, and well managed. Romantic atmosphere in the back, upscale-casual in the front. Looking forward to our next meal there!

"Exceeded expectations," my wife said. I give them a four and a half. We split a chicken supper here on a Thursday evening, for $20. I think they make to-go orders also, if you need to take the meal(s) with you. Reservations not required, but are recommended for the busiest times, such as Sunday lunch.

Everything is fresh and local or regional. This is by far my favorite restaurant in Huntsville. There is an excellent selection of vegetarian food and craft beer. The brunch is excellent. My only complaint is that they have cut down on their selection of teas and coffees, which I do miss very much.

Nice, clean restaurant! Love the farm-to-table idea! Issue being seasoning; when I went to brunch there we both ordered frittatas and they were almost completely unseasoned! You can serve fresh ingredients all you want, but it's important to add spice, which historically, has always been shipped from abroad. I'll be back, for sure, but I was disappointed to take a friend here from out of town for a taste of Huntsville with class and then to have the food be bland.

I'm seriously tired of hearing about restaurants that claim to be outstanding but I get there and they're just "so-so". This one was nothing to write home about and I probably won't be going back. Now I will say that the service was superb. That is high priority to me above anything else. Good job on that (and thus the 3 stars). But, the food was severely lacking. I expected these huge flavors and unique ingredients to blow me away. What we got was much like anything else at any other restaurant. The fennel on the shrimp dish was over cooked and chewy to the point of being inedible. My Bavette steak was like chewing on a rubber band. The flavor was just okay. I asked for a different meat and got a piece of roasted chicken that was slightly undercooked and it had to be sent back. The sweet potato gratin was really good though, as was the cheddar puff appetizer, and bread with spreads. I guess for the reputation and the price, I expected more.

What happened to customer service? Overflow seating area heating/temp in what used to be sazios should have been set and verified in advance of guest arrival. It is just as cold inside as outside. Where the hell is the manager? When three of the staff have attempted to adjust temp and manager does not show up to apologize or address the issue with guests, it is loud and clear how customer service is prioritized especially when manager shows up in room with large party adjacent to this room. I would give a sub zero star rating if possible. Food came out hot. Did not take long to get cold. If I had known, I would have brought hand warmers and a electric heater to plug in at least the area around me would have warmed up. Maybe a plate warmer. 30 minutes later. Where is the manager? My body is freezing and nose is running. Now that I think about it, this low temp is a great way to spark alcohol sales since I ordered a drink, but too cold to make a difference. Ordered desert. Good as usual. Now 50 mins since seated. No manager.

Against my better judgement I went to 1892 today for lunch... Bottom line up front: If you're into elf portions, all show and no go this is the perfect place for you. We were greated, if you can call it that, by a hostes who looked like her dog just died... It was down hill from there. The only thing that I enjoyed was the selection of Scothes that they offer and the service provided by the waiter Ben. The food was way below par and the price was way above par. They nickle and dime you for everything. I asked for vegetables vice a potato and they tacked on an "up fee." Really? No bread yet they give you a bread plate... Go figure. You got me this time but never again.

Fantastic grilled tenderloin! Wow, I loved the filet! It was cooked perfectly, nice grill marks on the outside and tender, juicy goodness on the inside. I was super surprised to have this turn out to be my favorite steak in HSV (tried Connor's, Ruth's Chris, and Cotton Row). The sides were perfectly seasoned and not overdone--everything I could have hoped for in a dish! The red potatoes, grilled tomatoes, and green beans were a nice counterpoint to the meaty-ness of the steak (also loved the mole). My husband and I also got two very solid appetizers--the crispy shrimp & grits and the pork belly & apples. Both were well executed. The main disappointment of the meal was the espresso sauce for the brisket. My husband liked the flavor of the brisket but the dish was tanked by the sauce. So head down to 1892, order the grilled tenderloin, and share a bottle of infinitely drinkable cab sauvignon with a loved one...you won't be disappointed!

Stopped in one night when the place was still empty and was told there were no seats available except at the bar. I ordered the baked oysters, salad, and flatbread. The oysters were dry and tasted like fishy cardboard. The salad was good but not special. And the mushroom flatbread was like store bought flatbread stuck in an oven with canned mushrooms on top (not good). Oh and the bill came out to like $60 which is ok for a good meal, but not for crap...The service was poor to non-existent even though I sat at the bar and the people were pretentious (funny for being in Huntsville eh?).

    (2)
  • Jason R.

Wait staff was not very friendly, maintained a crap attitude the entire evening. Food was over priced and was poorly presented. I expected a lot more for the price and atmosphere. Good selection of beers, 3/5 for Huntsville. If this restaurant was anywhere else, it would get 2/5 stars.

This is a great restaurant! Tasty healthy and nice ambience. The sweet potayo soup and mushroom pot pie were delicious, as was the burger. We're visiting the area. Best meal we've had in FIVE DAYS! They use healthy local ingredients: farm to fork.

I had the stuffed shrimp appetizer and the lamb entree. Both were outstanding. Service was superb. Highly recommend!

I am in Huntsville this week and learned that its restaurant week. My wife and I stay away from chains and only dine in local gems. When looking at what restaurant to choose this immediately jumped out. I can't describe how good this meal was. It started off with their take on Shrimp and Grits. When it arrived I thought I had the wrong dish. The bartender assured me I was in for a great surprise. He informed me that they butterfly shrimp and stuff it with grits before frying it. Let me just say, I will never look at shrimp and grits the same. This is a major out of the box rendition of a classic southern dish and turned out to be very successful. 2nd course consisted of pan seared chicken with seasoned veggies and pan ju. I've never eaten chicken that has melted in my mouth like butter...until now. Only issue I had was the skin was soggy and not appealing. Other than that, this was a well executed course. Last course consisted of two small desserts. Creme brûlée and chocolate (?). The brûlée was fantastic and the chocolate was very heavy. All I wanted was some whole milk and I would have been set. When I am back in Huntsville, this will be on my list of must haves. I highly recommend stopping in. Well worth it!!

Went here recently to try Sunday brunch. It was a great experience. Free mimosa with your brunch entree! I tried the barbeque bacon omlette. It was ok. Not my favorite. My mom had the shrimp and grits which were excellent! I'd order them next time. I also visited here for dessert on a Friday night with a girlfriend. Food was excellent. Nice low lit romantic atmosphere at night. I would highly recommend 1892 East!

First time today for brunch with my husband on a Sunday around noon. Did not realize we needed a reservation, but we were promptly seated at the bar which was full service with a very friendly bartender. Excellent bloody marys, food came out quickly, delicious eggs benedict for me and waffles for the hubby. Both were delicious! Complimentary mimosa included with the price of the meal, what a treat! We will definitely be back!

When we are celebrating something or we decide to have a meal together after a week of work, we look forward to the beautiful harmonious feast tabled before us at 1892. We also like to go every season when they change the menu, to have a sampling of local and exotic flavors. We always have excellent service when we go here, whether at the bar or at the table, eating in or having it packed up to go. Last night was no exception. Ben, our bearded server, was funny, attentive, and always had a smile on his face. Not to mention the best customer service attitude. Despite the fact that the first two beers my fiancé ordered they had no more of, Ben made suggestions to appease his tastebuds. Every bite of our dinner was tasty. An appetizer of bread, mushroom flatbread, sweet potato soup and the salmon for him and the Bavette for me. Highly recommended especially with that delicious and magical sauce, sweet potato Au gratin and lightly seasoned crisp green beans. My fiance's facial expression told me how he was enjoying the salmon too. His face didn't stop having a smile. If you can, save up your money for a treat like this. You won't regret it and the memory is worth it.

Fodd is OK, nothing to brag about. The food quality and presentation does not match the price. My dish was a diner quality not upscale restaurant as they are trying to create the image. Service was OK, the main dining room is dark. i will bring my money eslewhere.

A nice place, not great. The appetizer was good, pork belly with apples (although the portion was quite small). My main was good. I ordered the tenderloin medium rare, quite small portion and undercooked (it came out rare to blue). Probably won't go there again.

This is a brand new place in the five points area. They have a very clean look to them. their focus is using local and seasonal items. I had the crispy shrimp and grit to start and the grilled chicken and Serrano ham farfalle for my main course. The shrimp and grit was amazing. The grits kept the shrimp nice and moist and added a creamy texture. The home made sauce was outstanding. For the farfalle the flavors were very good, but there was way too much pepper for my taste. The place was very packed for only being open 3 weeks, and they still have some kinks to work out. I am defiantly looking forward to this to really blossom and can wait to go back.

Since opening in 2010, 1892 East is a pleasant restaurant in the former Sazio's/Starfish restaurant location in Huntsville's historic Five Points area. It is located in the same "strip mall" that is home to Star Market grocery store. We've celebrated Valentine's Day, my birthday with a large group, and several other visits with friends at 1892 East. I've enjoyed the food in large and small groups, special occasions and just a simple weekend lunch or brunch. The bar staff are particularly attentive and helpful, if you choose to dine at the bar. According to Executive Chef Steven Bunner: "The eatery's name comes from an early map notation regarding Five Points." For those who are vegetarian, 1892 East is a very vegetarian-friendly place, and even notes on their web site that Most Brunch dishes can be made vegetarian by substituting vegan sausage for bacon or ham at no additional charge. On to the dining experiences: NOTE: Their menu changes seasonally, which is nice, but makes it difficult to recall what one had at previous visits. BRUNCH: Brunch comes with a complimentary mimosa. The steak and eggs are delicious and filling. Mom had the "Southern Benedict" - eggs Benedict on a biscuit vice an English muffin. Mom cleaned her plate! My birthday brunch was for a party of ~ 14 and there was ample seating in the separate back dining area. Food was good and mimosas flowed freely. LUNCH: We typically order several apps to share. There is no extra cost to share a dish. I've had the flatbread, I think it was the "BLT flatbread" and the shrimp and grits. DINNER: I've had the shrimp and grits several times, and it is a solid dish. Done differently, it seems as if the shrimp are dipped into the grits and then deep fried. The "catch of the day" was a good dinner choice at Valentine's day. I don't recall the type of fish. The wine list is fairly extensive offering both reasonably priced wines by the glass and by the bottle. The only complaint I have is that the main dining area can get a little noisy as it has concrete floors and wooden tables. Do try 1892 East, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. It appears to meet its vision of: A unique Huntsville restaurant that is defined by the food-farmer-neighbor interactions to provide the highest quality local, organic and vegetarian foods.

Nice, quiet, stylish atmosphere. Better place for a date. Had the pork chop which was decent but wish I'd ordered the Salmon that a friend had. Good beer and wine list.

Food was wonderful and service was exceptional! I ordered the chicken and it was the juiciest chicken I've ever had and the veggies were amazing. I will most certainly be going back.

My husband and I met friends there last night, this was our second time to the restaurant. Both times were with a party of 10. Both times the service was very slow. After last night, we will never eat there again. Apparently, a larger seating is really not their thing. We arrived on time for our reservations at 7:00. We managed to get out of there at 9:30. I had to ask for the manager to inquire as to our ticket. I think our server was new or over burdened and the other employees standing around did nothing to help serve the larger seating. When the salads arrived, 5 of the 7 people that ordered Cesar salads had virtually no dressing on their salads. The entrees took a long time to come out. My "Medium tenderloin was Med/Rare. One lady at our table didn't receive her entree until everyone else was well into their meals. When she did receive hers, it was beef, not the lamb she ordered. It was sent back to the kitchen only to be immediately returned to her with a message from the chef "It is lamb"!! Just to this ladies' left was seated a gentleman that raises lamb! Really? We know the difference in beef and lamb but the chef apparently does not!! Our server was nice and I think tried hard. He may have just been left to fend for himself which still points to a badly managed, inexcusable dining experience for a $40 bar tab and a $160 dinner tab for 2 people.

I give this place a 5 because of the service. My waitress was a young lady named Christina, who was very helpful in assisting me and my party and with our decisions as well as being very knowledgable to the concern of our questions and needs. The only bad thing I have to say about this restaurant; there was a woman, who I think was, but did not look as if she were a manger. She kept looking at the table as if we did not belong there and made every one feel as if we were not welcome, she seemed lifeless and Ill at ease, slightly wandering about as if she were a poltergeist. Indivisible from the rest yet there to cause problems. All in all the experience was good, though slightly unsettling due to the lack of enthusiasm per the "manager" .

Perfect. Yes, perfect. We came here for brunch this morning, 'cause couples are allowed to do that. What a fantastic decision. At first we were thinking Cracker Barrel, but didn't want to fight the crowds, so we turned to Yelp and this popped up. So, why perfect? Well, we thought about it all day and could not come up with a single negative about this restaurant. The food was awesome. She had the Southern Breakfast, which is just eggs, bacon, potatoes and a gargantuan homemade biscuit. Everything was cooked well and not at all greasy. Which is amazing because most restaurants seem to add grease to everything. This was just real food. The highlight was the biscuit, which a table of 4 could split. Pillow-like texture with a great flavor, a perfect biscuit. Since it was brunch, I had the 1892 Burger. The burger was great. To me, the most important part of a burger, the element that ties the entire experience together, is the bun. A lightly toasted and buttered bun adds a subtle crunch, which I love. 1892 nailed the burger. Bonus! 1892's brunch entrees include a mimosa; yay for drinking in the AM! Also, the coffee comes out in a french press which you press yourself, which adds a bit of fun and gives the table some ownership of their brunch experience. The decor was great, everything is clean and the colors flow together well but are not dull. Our server was excellent, a very personable guy, extremely polite and knowledgeable. One of the better things about this place is it brings in one of the new trends in restaurants; locally-sourced ingredients. Everything comes from local farmers. Even the beer selection is local! No bud light crap here, they're giving the local brewers a place to showcase their product. Thumbs up for keeping it local, guys. We will be back to try a beer flight and dinner!

The food here was just OK for me. I'm not sure if I caught them on a bad night (it was very empty inside and late) but the grub was nothing special. I appreciate the use of local ingredients and I loved the spacious bar and the laid-back vibe of the restaurant, and my server was excellent and charming... but... The best thing I ate was the house-made bread and white bean puree . It was delicious and very filling. Thinking hey, this is a good start, I ordered the crispy shrimp and grits and while stuffing the grits inside the shrimp was a neat twist, the shrimp was fried way too long and and the sauce it was served with did nothing to compliment the flavors. I ate them but thought they were kinda a waste of stomach space as they really just tasted like anything that is heavily coated in breadcrumbs and fried. Next, my friend and I shared two flat breads; the mushroom and the veggie. They were too-crispy and I was really expecting the flavor of veggies and cheeses to stand out a bit more. My friend and I ended up skipping the entrees but tried dessert. We decided to share the strawberries and cream bread pudding and while the portion was a very good size for sharing, the bread pudding was not tasty. It just tasted like way too much milk and not enough sugar got together, just a log of bread and sugar wedges, no moist gooey- ness going on at all. Because this was my first visit, I'll be back and hope I catch them on a better night.

What a great find! We were in town for a wedding, and as brunch fanatics from Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, & DC had high expectations. The ingredients were very fresh and we really enjoyed our meal. Beyond that, the prices were very reasonable and service was outstanding . A 9 person table walks in on Sunday, and we were seated with no problem. The waitstaff was quick without being pushy and brought complimentary donuts as an appetizer. One friend's eggs were slightly overdone (medium well), and without any comment from us after being served, they rushed out a fresh pair of over easy eggs with an apology from the chef. I would absolutely go back here and have no doubt this place would be slammed fro brunch in a bigger city.

I guess they have worked out the kinks from the last review, because dinner was spot-on. The hubby and I had the crispy shrimp and grits, apple and brie salad, a duck breast special with sweet potato puree and diced sweet potatoes with pan-seared brussel sprouts, and creme brulee. All were very good, including the house-made bread with white bean puree. My ONLY complaints were: the brie salad needed more apples and the brie is served as a slice so you have to cut it up. Brie can be pretty sticky, so it would have helped if it were placed in the freezer for 5 minutes. Also, I would have loved if the shrimp and grits came with a side of grits as the grit aspect was a little lost in translation. Given those small items, this is the BEST place for good food I've found in Huntsville and I highly recommend it! I'll be back, probably this week, for more! BTW, I've been to all the "fine-dining" and chain places in HSV and this one still wins my vote. PS- bartender makes a great Old Fashioned per my hubby.

Probably the best meal I've had in Huntsville. All the ingredients are fresh, well made, and original. The chef has a real passion for local artisanal farmers. A good selection of wines and the largest selection of Alabama beers I've ever seen. The shrim & grits are an unusual presentation. The smoked tomato is sooo much better than cocktail sauce. I'll be back.

I hope the community will continue to support this place so it can stay in business because they are doing things the right way. The food is great. They have good beer and wine. They seem to try to use local everything whenever possible. Sunday brunch menu is very good. Just a great place with a great vibe. The servers all seem to be very friendly too.

Let me begin by saying, I could eat their mushroom flatbread, or heirloom tomato flatbread every day if it was possible. Mixed mushrooms with fresh sage, a house-made goat cheese spread & fresh mozzarella on some of the best flatbread. Or the heirloom tomatoes with fresh basil and the same cheeses.. Mmmmm. The sweet cream of white corn is perfect in every way, garnished with a charred corn relish and a green onion oil. They send fried green tomatoes out with an herbed aioli & Serrano cured ham- nothing could complement those tomatoes more. A salad with balsalmic vinaigrette, fresh mozzarella, croutons & a grilled Scott's Orchard Peach.... So simply amazing. And those are just the appetizers! If u go for lunch, I suggest 4 things: the catfish plate, the new Orleans BBQ shrimp, the1892 Burger, or the Chicken pasta. If you eat dinner: the Salmon, the chicken breast, charleston shrimp boil, or the vegetarian black bean tamales. If u go on Sunday brunch: everything! The menu is local, fresh, seasonal and ever-changing, but don't forget to ask what the special is! You will usually find a slightly different, but always delicious conbination. They also offer a variety of vegetarian dishes and always try to work with any special diet needs... What more could u ask for?! So as if all this amazingly priced five star food isn't enough, the service is always quality and the people that work there are always very informed and interested in sharing all the fun info about this little local restaurant, from the hostesses, to the servers, to the Chef or Manager coming out just to chat. Definitely worth trying MORE THAN ONCE. And I have been back more times than I can count! One last thing! Try the house spent bread (swoon) and the white bean spread they bring with it.

I was very impressed. I had squash soup and lamb, with chocolate cake for dessert. Everything was tasty, and there was more food than I could eat. The stuff was slammed by an unexpected party, so the service was slow. But when the server or hostess where available, they were very attentive. Definitely worth a visit.

My wife and I ate here in November and loved it. I really enjoyed some local brews from Straight to Ale. We ordered the BLT flatbread and there Cranberry Chicken Sandwich and shared both. The fresh mozzarella on the flatbread was incredible and really made a difference. The cranberry compote on the sandwich was great but the chicken was dry.

I was super excited to try this restaurant. After spending a good deal of time in the Huntsville/Decatur area for work, I've been on the hunt for a place that put emphasis on locally sourced ingredients, but haven't been able to find it. So when I found out about 1892 East, I couldn't wait to try it and see what the healthier, locally sourced side of southern cooking was all about. We had a reservation on the weekend before Valentine's Day, so the restaurant was packed with couples celebrating. We arrived right at the time of our reservation and were awkwardly shuffled off to the side to wait for a table to open up, with hurried apologies about an unexpected number of people due to Valentine's Day. I understand that sometimes tables run long and you can't seat people with reservations right away, but when our wait extended past the 15 minute mark, I was starting to wonder what the point in even making a reservation was. Thankfully we were seated soon after... For some reason the night I visited, I was in no mood for any sort of alcoholic beverage (if you know me, you know how very rare this is...) but I've been kicking myself ever since for nto trying one of their local beers. If you go, be sure to try one! To start, we ordere chickpea fries and a platter filled with local cheeses. Both were delicious and well done, but I found the fries to be sort of flavorless. I know chickpeas don't have that much flavor, but even when dipped in the sauces it just didn't have the burst of flavor that I was expecting. Still, well prepared and quite good. For dinner, I had the goat cheese crusted beef which was excellent and unique. The real star of our meal turned out to be the vegetarian menu. My mom ordered the vegetarian tamales, which, at first glance seemed to be nothing more than a plain tamale filled with plain black beans. I am not sure what they did, but it was delicious and flavorful. The simple flavors of the corn and beans just came through and it's definitely something you should consider if you visit!

Wow. I was really amazed that Huntsville offered a restaurant like this. The main types of restaurants in HSV is chains. I found this spot and it was awesome. They offered great selections and lots of great beers. Great vegetarian options too. If I am ever back in HSV, I will hit this place up.

Really excellent American cuisine with a focus on fresh, locally produced ingredients. Salads, entrees, desserts - they have a small but excellently executed menu. My wife and I are spoiled for good food and beer, and we were not disappointed. Even our 13-year-old son was impressed with something as simple as a roast chicken breast with mashed potatoes. The chocolate Grand Marnier cheesecake was fabulous. We will definitely be back.

This is my new favorite spot in Huntsville. Always have to eat at a place several times before I can say it gets my top spot. Great food and healthy options as well. I like they support local produce and breweries. Nice presentation as well.

We used to love this place. We've been several times, both lunch and dinner. Lunch menu was typical, burger, wraps & so forth. Bad thing is lunch doesn't have their delicious bread and spread :( But their burgers are good, big and juicy. They have the typical dinner menu: appetizer, entree and dessert. We pretty much had everything on their menu. No was no complain each time. The waiters are nice and tentative; but don't expect them to say anything about the food. Any dish we asked on the menu, they said that's the best one. Lol. Maybe that's what they truly believe, but... We did experienced one hiccup that put a bad taste in our mouth. We took the in law there one night & was embarrassed of the wait. We had reservation and arrived 5-10 minutes early. Granted, they did have a lot of people waiting. But with reservation, you would think you can get in at decent time. Nope, we didn't get seated until 45 minutes after our reservation time! The hostess just said "the other guests stayed longer than they expected"... wth? We didn't get any apology from the manager or receive any extra attention after that. We thought that was pretty rude and unprofessional. We wouldn't have stayed if it wasn't on a Friday night and we knew everywhere else would be pack. That's why we made a reservation at this restaurant so that we didn't have to wait too long and get a decent dinner time... Guess that didn't work...

I've been here two times. The first time I was disappointed with my overcooked fish entree. I hadn't been back in over a year. Recently a friend was in town and we intended to go elsewhere, but that place was super busy. So I gave 1892 a second chance. They at least have a good beer selection and were able to get us seated right away early on a Friday. The first thing we got was a good multigrain bread with a white bean spread and butter. The white bean spread had too much orange zest, as if they got into the bitter white part of the peel. It was inedible. My friend and I ordered the grilled peach and spinach salad while my husband got the Caesar salad. The dressing on our spinach salad was like mayonnaise, very bland and it wilted the spinach. The peach was not very sweet and kind of mealy. The best things about the salad were the mozzarella and croutons. My entree was a flatbread with chicken, tomatoes, and other veggies. It was ok, but not great. My husband and friend got the amberjack special which was actually really good. Given that 1892 is kind of pricey, I find it improbable that I will continue to spend money there. Especially since it seems to be a gamble as to whether what I get will be worth any money at all. There are plenty of other consistently good choices in town.

This is best restaurant in Huntsville. The chef is very creative and inventive with his entrees. This past weekend I ate the Pecan Stuffed Trout. It was amazing. Best beer selection of any fine dining in town. The ambiance is warm and inviting just like their staff.

Had dinner there tonight. The bread is good as was the Caesar salad. Then the entree came. Blackened redfish over rise with shrimp étouffée and green beens. The rice was not cooked. The shrimp étouffée had NO shrimp in it and was over spiced to the point you could not taste the fish. Also they charged me for one more drink than I ordered. I gave 1892 a second chance tonight and they failed. Not going back.

So last Friday my hosts in Huntsville wanted us to go somewhere nice and serving some new American cuisine. Originally we were heading to Below the Radar but low and behold, they were SLAMMED and told us it'd be an hour and a half wait. Sorry but nothing is worth that. Needless to say, we headed over to 1892 for dinner. Honestly, I had browsed the menu and had some hesitations but whatever. We show up and there was no wait and we got seated. Two of us order beers and dig in to their fresh baked bread and butter and white bean spread. A few notes, the bread was DELICIOUS. The white bean spread was good but was a bit heavy on the citrus zest, pretty much overpowering the whole thing. Another observation, I'm pretty sure they gave us unsalted butter. Who gives unsalted butter with bread? I understand clean but how about balanced? We were resorted to putting table salt ON the buttered bread. That was not very cool. Next up two of us ordered the Peach Mozzarella Spinach salad. We were both pretty excited about this and well, in the end we were both worried about our entree. The whole thing was just....bland. It tasted like either the dressing wasn't seasoned properly or the dressing separated. The peach was grilled but it didn't taste seasoned or coomaeked long enough for the sugars to caramelize. I thought it was OK but not great. Just disappointing. My friends were giving this place a 2nd chance because the last time they were here their appetizers were better than their entrees. This time, the entrees surpassed the salads. Me and the husband both had their special that was grilled Amberjack with an almond risotto, seasonal vegetables and a pear puree. That fish dish was DELICIOUS. I was more than pleased with it but left with more questions on how the entree could be so good but the salad so sub par. Another thing that really grinded my gears? This is a local, farm to market eatery and they have a nice selection yet their menu seemed really uninspired or dumbed down. Seriously, free range chicken terriyaki? I was completely insulted by that. If I wanted chicken terriyaki I'm pretty damn sure I can get there at a dozen places in the same area for under $20. Also, they have a vegetarian menu but once again, $20 is the average and it's Tofu and Portabello mushrooms?! I understand you're trying to keep the menu prices level and all but Jesus Christ.

Go here! You won't regret it. I'm a vegetarian and have been in Huntsville for a week for work, and I've been unable to find a good, non-chain restaurant...until now. I had a fantastic squash, potato, and green bean entree that made me want to lick the bowl. My dinner companion had a shrimp dish that he said was excellent. They seem to have plenty of meat dishes too, and if our two dishes were any indication, I'm sure they rest of their menu is very good as well.

I have been in 1892 a few times and the Friday night before Halloween was just another great meal. We had the Creamsicle martinis and they were yummy! I enjoyed the chicken rotini pasta but the chicken may have been just a bit overcooked. We had costumes on but 1892 is just that kind of place where it wasn't an issue and we felt completely comfortable. I also had Sunday brunch here the day my son and his g/f were in town and all I can say is WOW. Order the french press coffee! Their version of french toast....order 1 and share it because it's a huge portion. I love 1892 East!

On our first Saturday night out in Huntsville, I chose this restaurant for dinner up on the reviews of several. Place is very non descript from the outside- we barely could tell that it was open - there was no signage and the windows were tinted. The only indication that there was a restaurant inside were the menus posted on the door. Large, open layout and it was busy for a Saturday night. The bar looked like the place to be. We were seated shortly and our server was very friendly. We found the wine list to be decent - the beer list is really the star here. We ordered a bottle of Three Saints - a blended red. The bread was delicious but I wasn't a fan of the hummus type spread - not enough flavor. We started with the shrimp & grits appetizer - as many reviewers have noted, the grits are stuffed inside the breaded and fried shrimp. The texture, flavor and portions were right on- we enjoyed these. We also shared the mixed mushroom flatbread - great flavor on the mozzarella and the shrooms - I thought the crust was a little chewy but had a nice olive oil flavor. Unfortunately, that's where the good news stops. Our entrees were a disappointment. My boyfriend ordered the New York Strip- local beef, served with a mushroom butter and fries. The steak came and both of us noticed that the butter wasn't melting. It was just sitting there. The steak was completely cold. It was cooked perfectly but there was a very large strip of fat and the cold temperature did nothing for the texture. Fries were hand cut and hot. He only made it through half of the steak. My pasta was a giant bowl of mushy farfalle - accented by butternut squash, some wilted spinach, and topped with a half a breast of grilled chicken and some strips of serrano ham. The chicken and the ham were tasty - well cooked, but the bowl of pasta was oppressive- huge, mushy, overcooked, flavorless, and pretty much inedible by my standards. We finished our wine for dessert instead of looking at the dessert menu. Disappointed that this is one of the top spots in Huntsville - the menu definitely has some highlights but if we come back it will be for apps and craft beers at the bar. As a side note, lots of babies in this place for 9 pm on a Saturday.... Update - one of the owners saw my review and emailed me within a few hours of it posting - offering to have us back to try it again and noting that she will discuss with her servers the next time food goes back uneaten. Its this type of restaurant ownership that we need more of - and we will take her up on it and hopefully have a better experience.

Go NOW and get the local pork. I'll wait here. Ok, you're back? Seriously, isn't that the most fabulous pork you've ever eaten? I hope you didn't cook it past medium, that would be a crying shame. In all seriousness, we have been twice (lunch and dinner) and really enjoyed it. Great local beer menu -- the furtherest away is from Atlanta. Decent wine selection with some cheap but tasty options. I especially like how they have excellent vegetarian options; it's truly an option, not relegated to a salad or asking for substitutions. The staff at this place are the happiest I've ever seen. They're practically giggling with excitement to tell you about the food. It's rather endearing. The only thing we didn't love was the chocolate grand marnier cheesecake; it was a bit dry the day we had it, but certainly not bad. To summarize: happy servers, happy pork. We'll be back!

Let me start off by saying the food is excellent. The beer sampler a must try! I found my favorite to be the Lazy magnolia. I like that they buy their vegetables and honey locally. I had the salmon...was delicious! With all that being said, the only bad part was the staff. It took them 30 minutes to take our drink order. And when we asked about the beers (information on the sampler) and on recommendation of food, he had none. Everything else was excellent. If you want good food and beer this is a must try...just be well aware that some of the staff are rude and not on top of their game. **update ** - I was contacted after I posting this and would like to thank the manager for getting right to the problem and fixing it. He was very punctual on responding.

Wow, finally found a place in Huntsville that is current with the times, as far as food trends go. This place focuses on the "local" aspect of food that is so lacking in the heart of Northern Alabama. From the food to the beer, everything is sourced from the Southeast. Homemade bread was really good and a great touch for this spot. Served with unsalted butter and a bean dip, it was surprisingly good. Nice attention paid to the bread and the bean dip was refreshing. Had the shrimp and grits and the apple, brie, and pecan salad for small plates. The shrimp is fried and stuffed with grits. It's a refreshing play on a classic. Good flavors, my only suggestion would be to serve a side of the grits, almost like a dipping sauce. It did come with a roasted tomato dipping sauce that tasted fresh and complimented the dish nicely. The salad was good but could have used a little more apple and some more attention to presentation. It looked hastily put together, but tasted fine with the homemade dressing. I had a nightly special of duck paired with some sweet potatoes and some sauteed brussel sprouts, among other things. Great job here, and the duck was cooked almost perfectly with just the ends of the fillet a little over done. Really nice flavors. We sat at the bar and had great service. Good selection of craft beers and a decent wine list. Would love to see some attention to specialty cocktails. They have a full bar with some good selections. Maybe some more small craft liquors would be great to compliment the beers. I love bourbons, so maybe a Michters or Eagle Rare type of selection would be great. I had an Old Fashioned with Knob Creek, and was very happy with it, nice to have a bartender who knows what they are doing. The space is sparsely decorated and while I couldn't put my finger on it, it needed something. It's not a bad space, just needs a little more. Only being open for a short amount of time, this is something that will inevitable come. Prices are good, especially with other restaurants in the area charging absurd prices for the quality. I didn't feel ripped off here, in fact I've paid more for less in some better known restaurants in Atlanta. Really reasonable prices for the quality. Bravo, with this place less than a month old, I only expect to see improvements here and I will be more than happy to visit this place again. Thanks, I was beginning to believe that I couldn't get a meal this good in Huntsville. Huntsville is blessed to have some great farms and beautiful country all around it, this place is taking advantage of that. Bravo with having no t.v.'s or Bud Light for a change.

I was excited to try one of the few places in Huntsville that boasted local produce and hormone-free meats. I would go back, but it could use a little work. The decor is beautiful, and the hostess had a welcome smile. Our waittress was very friendly, but she kept telling us she was having an off night, at some point using the term brain-fart, which wasn't something I needed to hear when I was looking at a tempting menu. She kept telling us about the poached oysters with cornbread, but she really meant mussels. We had the added complexity that she couldn't really recommend the meat dishes as she was a vegetarian herself. Still, she was very sweet and friendly. We ordered the mussels anyway, and they were nicely prepared. There was a light broth, and the cornbread was presented in the middle of the plate. It doesn't sound right that cornbread would soak in mussel broth, but somehow, this dish worked. There were more diced onions than I'm used to when I have mussels, but that was okay too. I ordered the pork belly appetizer, and I must agree with Nancy M. Instead of it being 'melt-in-your-mouth' fatty pork, it was just fat. The flavor was good, but one bite oozed so much fat in my mouth that I actually coughed. This is a great idea, but there is room for improvement on the preparation of this one. I went for the roasted chicken tamales, and they were three right-sized tamales with a nice combination of chicken and masa. The salad that came with it had a good mix of fresh greens, but the vinaigrette was way too acidic. I like sour and citrus flavors, but I felt like I needed some bread to soak up the acid from my stomach. I would still get that again, but with the dressing on the side. Speaking of bread, I'm not sure what that hearty dark bread was, but it was tasty. It wasn't warm, but it was still fresh. The bean puree that came with it wasn't exciting. I asked for some real butter instead, and I was satisfied. My dinner companion ordered the apple crisp, which was warm and beautifully plated. I can't put my finger on why, but one taste was enough. Nothing in that dish jumped out to make me go back for more. I'd like to try the chocolate bread pudding or the pumpkin cheesecake though. Bottom line- worth a visit, and hope you order something that you enjoy!

Really nice, great atmosphere in the restaurant. The drinks are great and the service is fast and the waiter(s) are really top notch. The sweat tea is great, they bring you the glass the tea and a small cup of liquid sweetener so you can add as much or as little as you want, really nice. The preparation of the food when it arrives to you is really great for a causal restaurant. The food was at the table within 20min and was hot and fresh. It was a Friday night and was a full house, however the waiter was speedy, very funny and got everything right. It was delightful. All in all a great little place to just get away for a while!

After sitting a couple of weeks on my experience here, I still felt compelled to write a review. I have been in a few times and I always sit at the bar. I worked in restaurants for 13 years and I feel at home at the bar. My husband and I ordered a couple of starters and beers. They were great! I love their local cheese plate actually. We decided to split an entree and ordered the shrimp linguini. When I tasted the dish, I tried it with all of the elements of the dish, proscuitto, capers grilled shrimp, the pasta and sauce and the preserved lemon. It WAS so SALTY. I know that some of these components are salty so I tried the shrimp (fine) I tried just the pasta with the sauce and it was horrible. Husband who is a garbage disposal wouldnt eat it! He eats food from a gas station and he wouldnt eat this! Being in the restaurant industry for so long I HATE to return food but my husband insisted! So we told the bartender and he says im so sorry ill let the chef know. He went into the kitchen with the food and returned shortly and offered dessert. Maybe five minutes previous to this I had a conversation with the bartender telling him I hate sweets and id much rather eat bacon or pork belly. He never offered another entree just dessert. When the bartender returned with the dessert he said "The chef said maybe you thought it was salty because of the preserved lemon." Not only was I completed blown back that the bartender had the gumption to say that to me, I was pissed because it didnt matter what it was IT WAS TOO SALTY TO EAT and thats a ridiculous thing to say to the customer. When we received our bill they charged us for the entree we didnt eat and was returned to the kitchen,I left hungry and doubt I will ever go back especially if that bartender is there! A manager/owner, who I have met on a previous occassions never came by to apologize or check on us. I understand sometimes things dont turn out as hoped. It happens but dont blame the customer, don't leave them hungry, and make sure your customers are taken care of properly its the way to keep a restaurant going. Ridiculous! ----I promptly received an email with an apology from the General Manager and I will be returning to give it another shot, I was incredibly impressed with the message---- will not sit with the same bartender though ;)

My brother was in town so we tried 1892 East. It was really excellent. The food was great. Among the three of us we had the Seiten, the trout and the brisket. All were prepared and inventive recipes. The service was good--friendly but not intrusive. I will certainly go again.

Pros: - Fresh flavor - Beautiful presentation - Pleasant staff Cons - None I highly recommend brunch on Sundays. The menu is simple and well executed and the mimosa's (gratis with egg dishes and entrees) are perfectly proportioned.

My husband and I just moved to the area from California and we decided on 1892 East for our first night out in our new town based on an awesome looking menu and the good reviews on Yelp. The menu was truly distinctive from a lot of the other restaurants I had been perusing, points for some creativity. What sold me were the chicken tamales, my husband is obsessed with tamales and I thought we'd both enjoy eating here. I made reservations for 7pm on a Friday night. We showed up 10 minutes early, but were seated right away. The restaurant itself is quite lovely with intimate dining rooms, big windows and a nice looking bar. The crowd at 7pm on a Friday night was definitely on the older side. Our very pleasant server greeted us with a big smile, bread and menus. We decided on the following: Pork Belly Appetizer Chicken Tamales Shrimp and Beans The spread that comes with the bread lacked flavor, I'm not sure what it was, but it appears to be made out of beans, the texture was kind of like hummus. The pork belly was a disaster. I love a good pork belly, but it has to be done right, crisp and crackling on the outside and meltingly tender meat underneath. If you cook it long and slow enough, the fat melts into the meat and you're left with delicious meat, rather than a thick layer of fat. This pork belly was really fatty, I couldn't eat more than a bite and I almost spit it into my napkin. The chicken tamales were dry and underwhelming. My shrimp and beans were cooked well, but the flavors were not right, bland and lack luster. Like Sarah P. we finished our wine for dessert instead of looking at the dessert menu and headed out. It really is a shame since its such a lovely little spot. Our lovely server said their brunch is really good. We might give that a shot sometime, we'll see.

It's about time we had a really good restaurant--one that can double as a "fine dining" establishment and a really good "neighborhood restaurant." The Wolf fish special and the flounder were both delicious, as was the Southern Salad. The service was good, too. I'm thrilled to have a place like 1892 East Restaurant & Tavern close to downtown Huntsville. (My 5th Star would be reserved for more formal establishments and is certainly not meant to detract from more casual but superb places like this one). The people in the kitchen as well as those present in the dining room and on the phone did a great job. I hope they can keep up the good work. Thank you.

1892 East is my number one choice for lunch in the Huntsville area. The menu is on trend, ingrediants are fresh and local, (farm-to-table) and they have a lovely little beer and wine list to accompany the menu. The burger and flatbread pizzas are standout lunchtime items. It's always a pleasure to dine here in the Five Points neighborhood - I love the small, cozy atmosphere and the modern decor. Highly recommended.

I eat here at least once a week, sometimes maybe two. I have worked my way through most of the menu and have to say -- this place is AMAZING! I've only ever had one dish that wasn't as good as all the others, and that might have been because I tend to be VERY picky. Greg the bartender is AWESOME and makes the best drinks in town. Not only is the specialty martini list really great, but you can ask him for anything and expect it to be the best you've ever had. (John Daly is my menu favorite, but he makes a BOSS hand grenade upon special request!) I love that they have a constantly evolving menu to match the seasons, and that they really are passionate about food. The cooks take the time to make each plate a special experience. Would give ten stars if I could. Wish I was eating there now.

We had brunch here on Sunday and it was great! I've just moved from the DC area and was dining with someone from Atlanta, and we agreed that the restaurant was on par with what we would have in either of those cities. We really loved the French press coffee. Mimosas were just ok, but then they did come free with the brunch. Wait staff was very friendly and helpful. Highly recommeded; we'll be back!

Yes, I'm biased. If I had a restaurant it would try to pattern itself after this one. When I'm in town on business, which can be two days, two weeks and even two months, I invariably come to 1892 East. What do you need? Great tasting food from healthful ingredients? An ambience that permits conversation? Friendly staff? A great selection of regional craft beers? Fulfillingly good wines? Cocktails worthy of your personal need for a celebration (objectively justifiable or not, ha!)? This restaurant is a cool place. I have met real friends here. But it comes down to the food. There is a varied menu of creatively updated southern influenced dishes. Meats are cooked to perfection, seasoning is just so. Vegetarians are embraced, creatively. Try brunch. House cured bacon, French crispy toast using their spent grain bread, and I'm not sure you can find a better cup of press coffee anywhere. I've come here twice a day for days in a row!

I went to 1892 for brunch and had the country salad and country eggs Benedict. The food seemed fresh and was very well prepared but both of my dishes seemed under seasoned. I could taste the ingredients but no pop. Since the preparation was otherwise good maybe other dishes are better. Service was very good. Food came out surprisingly quick. Servers seemed attentive. Atmosphere was cosy. Mix of modern and country.
