This place is a great alternative to your national chain coffee shops, and likely the thing I will miss most about my old neighborhood. The food and the coffee are both delicious, and you can even choose from a huge selection of local, import and domestic beer for just $3 a bottle. A vast breakfast and lunch menu ranging from specialty dishes to "build your own" sandwiches- all tasty and fresh .They run a great "homestyle" catering business and their baked goods & ice cream are excellent as well. The real reason I love this place is the people. The entire staff is anxious to help, serve you, and make you feel right at home. They are friendly, call repeat customers by name and even remember your "usual" order to speed it up if you're in a hurry. They have a second large room that will accommodate large groups(Business meetings, Bible studies etc.) that you can have at no charge. Just show up or call a few minutes ahead. The only drawback is prices. It is not quite as cheap as Starbucks. But hey, your sandwich isn't pre-made and wrapped in plastic either. If you're ever in Edgewood or close by, go see the lovely ladies at Hart & Soul.

Slow slow slow service! I stood at the register three women were looking at something while the other employee shouts can someone get the register as she walks by. No one came for about five minutes so the other employee yelled again can someone get the register. Finally a very unfriendly employee came to the register annoyed because I was ordering food I guess. I ordered bagels. Turns out they were not freshly made I might as well have gone to Publix! I'm sure I could have at least walked in and out Publix and gone home and toasted my own bagel quicker. Oh and a huge problem with the kitchen no gloves were used and the staff went from kitchen to register without washing their hands. I also saw some roaches in the kitchen which is pretty disgusting.

Today I met friends at Hart & Soul for a quick morning meeting and a bite to eat. Despite my father having worked for an international coffee company, I'm not a big coffee drinker. In high school, I opted for Spanish and never studied French. Based on these obvious character flaws, I now understand I'm really not the type customer Hart & Soul wants in their shop. I was unaware until today that Hart and Soul should be avoided at all costs unless you have sufficient time to practice pronunciations of all menu items before entering. Without said preparation, they will be happy to serve you, but only after a suitable reprimand. Cafe Au Lait; half strong coffee & half steamed milk. I've had it dozens of times in coffee stands in the US and out of the country as well. Up to this point in my life when I have blissfully and ignorantly ordered the drink (in what I now understand to be) a grossly mangled pronunciation, the servers have graciously filled my order with a courteous smile. Never until today did I have someone question "WHAT DID YOU SAY?" Wait for me to repeat my error and then jump in with "IT'S PRONOUNCED OH LAY". Luckily their "you ignorant dolt" was internalized and not blathered out with the rest of their unexpected foray into pedagogy. Okay, I was wrong, you were right. Clearly you drink more coffee than me and maybe you studied French. Mere mortals would probably have been embarrassed by the reprimand, but heck, I have done far more embarrassing things in my life and honestly, I was more embarrassed for the server who really though she was doing me a favor by correcting my in front of my party. It's a great example of winning the battle, and losing the war. Today was, by my best estimation my first and last trip to Hart & Soul. The service was slow, the food and cafe OH-LAY were average.

This is a coffee shop with some wickedly delicious ice cream. Get the caramel flavors but leave the cheesecake. It wasn't cheesecake enough for my liking. On a Sunday afternoon, you can here live music playing.

I know better than to eat at places like this without checking a review first, but I did it anyway. One of the first things I noticed on their menu board is that a bagel costs $2.50. Murray's Bagel in NYC charges $1.15 per bagel - a hand made bagel - arguably the best bagel money can buy. Against my better judgement, I ordered a plain bagel with prosciutto and cream cheese. For $7.99 I got what tasted like a Publix bagel out of a bag, prosciutto out of a bag, and some kind of awful generic cream cheese with a half cup of salad drowning in dressing. Next time I'll eat at home for 1/4 of the price.

The name fits. Kind of a life saver! Anna and I were headed to the pizza place nearby but it was closed. Had the salad sampler. Recommend highly. Lots of different tastes.

The set up: my dear friend and I wanted to catch up over coffee on a Sunday afternoon, and wanted to check out Hart and Soul because it's in Edgewood, and, well, Edgewood is cute. We try to support local places whenever possible, so we were excited to see how this place stacked up against our more regular spots like Urban Standard and O'Henry's. But, our experience was fairly awful. When I arrived my friend had already purchased her iced chai latte, which she told me was terrible and to order something else. I went inside the dimly lit bar (because despite its name, this place is really more of a bar than a coffee shop) and had to fight to get the three wait staffers' attention. I ordered something I thought was simple: an iced latte. The result was a 15 minute wait for a $5 drink that was the worst iced latte I have ever had. It tasted like watered down leftover coffee... ick. Then I went outside to sit with my friend, and I tried her iced chai latte. It was obviously made from a powdered mix with some type of overly sugared syrup. We decided to tough it out, but then a slew of children began running up and down the sidewalk (their families were inside the place), and one boy kept blowing a whoopee cushion in our faces. (yes, this literally happened four times... if he wasn't a scrawny 8 year old I might have reacted strongly)... Finally we realized that between the uncomfortably outdoor furniture, the untidy interior seating, the bad drinks and the loud/obnoxious kids, we should've gone with our instincts. We tossed our over-priced beverages in the trash and drove to O'Henry's, where we enjoyed perfectly made drinks in a great atmosphere. But hey, we have a story to tell! (and who know whoopee cushions were still around???)

While my wife was up to her ears in the Kids Market & Mom consignment sale, I meandered down to Edgewood. Being as it was an early Saturday morning, I was in the mood for a coffee shop, and despite the dismal reviews, I ventured to give Hart & Soul a try. Unfortunately, H&S gets a resounding "meh" from me - upon walking in the door, I was met with a garish menagerie of decor, which was a bad start. I went to the bar to order (because it's kind of a coffee drinks by day/liquor drinks by night sort of joint) and four or five gents were milling about behind the counter, attempting to get the espresso machine ready for the day - but it was 8am on a Saturday and not the best time for such calibrations. Seeing that espresso was not an optimal choice, I just went with a regular coffee, thinking that perhaps a quality baseline test would redeem the otherwise poor experience. Mmm, but then again, maybe not. I sat and sipped at one of their little tables on the sidewalk outside, and remained unimpressed. Sorry Hart & Soul, it's going to take a stronger performance to drag me away from the other stellar coffee spots in Birmingham.

I stopped by here this past weekend with my girlfriend for a cup of coffee after a late lunch. Upon entering the shop I thought that it looked cute and inviting with lots of interesting looking tables and an area with lazy boy type chairs and a leather couch. We waited a few minutes to order and Since most of the tables were full we decided to sit of the leather couch. At least 15 minutes, yes you read that correctly 15 MINUTES, later we finally received our drinks. An Americano and a cup of green tea. I can't say that I have ever waited that long at a coffee place after ordering. My girlfriend enjoyed her green tea which was a homemade tea bag with looseleaf although i thought it smelled of coconut. My Americano started off tasting a bit bitter and stale but settled into a good taste after I left it alone for awhile and I ended up being satisfied with it but not blown away. The bottom line for me is that I will not be heading back here in the future. It took entirely too long to get our order for a place billed as a coffee company.

I stopped here on my way to visit someone in the hospital. It was mid-morning so the crow was thin. There were only two people working so I understood the mild wait. I like to order "named things" because I think it will be unique. So, I ordered "The Rooney" which was ham and egg on a bagel. Although the sandwich was not unique, it was delicious, They took a little longer to deliver it than I wanted but in the end I was satisfied. The cost was about $8 which is what you'd spend on average at Subway now and days, even for a large portion breakfast. I asked the lady at the counter if I could transfer what was left of my coffee into a to-go cup and she graciously offered me a free refill. This is not a place I would go out of my way to visit but If I am in the area I might stop by and try it again.

Four of us stopped here on the way home from the beach. Got to talking with other customers while drooling over selections. They were two of the kindest people around and we enjoyed much yummy stuff at the shop. Thank you Homewood, Birmingham!

Stopped in for coffee and listen to some live Bluegrass. Good stuff. Gelato machine broken so kids were bummed. Good hang out place.
