Wow! Our 1st big shocker is when our Capistrano Nachos appetizer was brought out. That alone is enough to feed my wife and 2 small kids. I wish I had remembered to take a pic of it for you before this ravenous family had ripped apart its bold and magnificent beauty. Our server was awesome with checking on our needs and very friendly with a good personality. I'm so glad we gave Cactus Flower Cafe a try.

Good, fresh Mexican food. We went for lunch and were happy with the portion sizes and quality. Service was good too. I particularly liked the huevos rancheros and the salsa and guacamole were good also. Lots of vegetarian options. Atmosphere could use some improvement. They're trying but it felt a bit off, as many before have stated.

We've dined here three times in the last 2 weeks -- our home is on the market so we've needed a quick getaway while the agents do their stuff. We've been impressed with the staff, cleanliness, and especially the food. We finally shared an entree -- the mango shrimp salad, which is huge -- and an app of queso bites (it does? So that's what we felt!) and of course lots of decent chips and very fresh tasting salsa. Previous visits we've not shared the entree and ended up bringing home leftovers, which we are OK with. So what I'm saying is, the portions are large, Marge. Yes there is piped in music but funeral home? It was a bit too peppy for mortuary muzak. And there's a small patio for those who want to dine while listening to the rush of cars on Monkey Highway and admire the blazing afternoon sunshine ... We will continue to patronize this establishment!

Omg is all I can say. The food is to die for! The atmosphere is super nice. Jazz music playing in the background. Not packed on Friday nights and food comes super fast.

Absolutely the best chicken nachos ever except the queso sauce was too much this time. Jalepenos on the side because BFF doesn't like them, but omg, they are fresh chopped, not pickled or put up, totally fresh on every ingredient. I always get the guacamole with my basket of chips and salsa along with a side of sour cream and I dip and enjoy, then order the chicken verde enchiladas. Today just nachos Capistrano with chicken. Yummy.

Pleasantly surprised by the food. Everything we ordered was delicious and portions were fair. I have to agree with other reviewers that the atmosphere is a bit strange (who picked this music? Why is it so dim lit? Where's the sun?). The only thing that held me back from a 5 star review was that service was slow and not the friendliest. We did however receive our food surprisingly quick after we finally got to order.

Best salsa I have had in sooo long. Freshest in town. Had the Mahi Mahi Fish Tacos, hubs had empanadas. AMAZING!!! Lime sauce on fish tacos was such a refreshing tart surprise. Had the fried flour tortillas, like a chalupa shell, will be hard to eat it any other way. Hot tea is always a fav of mine, they have a blueberry herbal that is so comforting. Finished off with Mexican Wedding Cake, so moist and the raspberry sauce makes for a complex flavor. I am craving this cake again!!! This is my new fav place in Dothan!!

This is the same Cactus Flower that I love in Pensacola! Super creative menu. The fish tacos are amazing and items are creative Latin food as it would be insulting to just call it Mexican food. Don't let this one slip by you on 231!

Excellent food. Very fresh and proportioned well BUT getting food to table takes way too long why would the send queso and guacamole to the table with out chips? Thought it was just an oversight but the table opposite us had same experience. They bring chips with salsa. The food is worthy repeat as take out

Very nice cafe. Prompt service. When I'm here I don't always realize that I am still in south Alabama, which is nice.

BEST fish tacos I have ever had, anywhere. Although I love their fish tacos and get them almost every time, I have never had a bad thing there. The atmosphere is not a "fun" environment like many similar restaurants but the margs and food make your visit well worth it.

We live in Florida and have been to ALL of the Cactus Flower locations. We eat at the Navarre location weekly. I'm from this area and am in town for birthday so the family headed to cactus flower for dinner. I ordered the fish tacos as that is what I eat every time. Slack on the fish. I order one for my son and pick out the fish for him to eat and there was hardly any in there. very disappointed. Same with husbands chicken in his tacos. They needed more servers. We had dirty plates left on our table while eating dessert (which we were charged for even though every year I go to Cactus Flower for my bday and get free dessert), had to ask server who dropped dinner off to please take the stack of empty chips/ appetizer plates stacked up. Very disappointed in service and food.

Our favorite restaurant in Dothan! Their food is always fresh and delicious. Their Mexican salad is one of the best salads I've ever eaten. Their chimichangas with black beans and their fresh guacamole is out of this world!! Give it a try- you will not be disappointed. We love Cactus Flower!!

Amazing food!! Great quality, friendly service but most importantly the food was fresh, delicious and we will be going back!

I cannot stress how wonderful this establishment is. Living here in the South, it is hard to find restaurants that will cater to people who have a vegetarian diet. No matter what I request, they are always eager to fill my order/make sure we leave satisfied. I cannot recommend a better Mexican Cuisine in this area. Don't let the location fool you, it doesn't look like much and would be easy to miss if you weren't looking for it. You won't regret going if you get around to it!

Love this place! I always order the guac and the chicken tostada. Can never finish all the food, but I always try bc it is sooo good! Great price, great food, friendly service!

Great service and some of the best mexican food we've ever had. We go at least once per week!

  • Mike L.

Pseudo fancy Mexican "cuisine", prices are a bit high, tastes are a bit dull and lack spice, they don't have or even comprehend requests for common items such as horchata, maybe better off going to taco del mar...

Don't let the strip mall location scare you. You wont find great Mexican good in Dothan but this will do just fine. Not overly Americanized but not the "real Mexican" food that tends to be bland and low quality. We live out west so we know good Mexican. The modern atmosphere isn't much but we care more about food and service. Prices are spot on with good portion entrée around 10-12 bucks. Service was fine but not outstanding. I got beef chimichanga wife got mahi tacos. She said tacos were top three ever. I agree. Chimichanga wasn't fried to a crisp but tender and lots of flavor. Smashed pinto beams and lime cilantro rice are premium grade and very good. The free chips and salsa were horrible. Horrible. Thick cardboard chips. Salsa was tomato paste with a weak hint of pepper and onion. Please fix this! I was starving when we sat down... We love chips and guac, but for six bucks the menu says only single avocado. I'm cheap I guess... I'm hoping the guac has more flavor and spice than the free salsa. If the salsa had been any good I may have ordered it. We will go to La Parilla next time we want Mexican here in Dothan (only bc we remember it was good but not sure how compares), but these are really the only two considerations for Mexican in Dothan. Skip the others. I'll go back to Cactus next time in town visiting the family...

I came here for lunch because of its rating on Yelp and thought I would try a new place. This is not for the younger crowd. The atmosphere is very strange. The music sounded like funeral home music. I got two tacos because you can't go wrong with tacos and they make their own shells. My taco was ok, the shell was great. I also had the Queso which was phenomenal. My server was not good. She kept saying she would bring more water and kept forgetting until I had to ask her across the restaurant. Same thing with the check, it took her forever. This restaurant is just not for me.

What a great find!!! We were driving south (Nashville, TN to Tampa, Fl and started looking for a somewhat healthy restaurant south of Montgomery, AL. Found this little gem on Yelp and it was exactly what we were looking for! We had our pup (Daisy) so we sat in the enclosed patio and had a very healthy Mexican dinner. "Laura" & "Lauren" we're sweethearts and super attentive. I wish they would open a restaurant in the Venice/Sarasota area. Will certainly keep this on our list when we travel this way again!

An unassuming little Mexican/California fusion cafe located on the edge of North Dothan. The food is always consistent in quality and the mixed drinks are well made. I'd recommend Cactus Flower for a date night...but the family will enjoy it too.

  • Eric B.

The food at the Cactus Flower Restaurant was very good. The sign out front said that this is California style Mexican food. Not being from California, I'm not sure what this actually means. However, the food was excellent and very fresh.

Love the fresh ingredients and quiet atmosphere. The black beans are soooo good! I haven't been back to La Parilla since trying Cactus Flower. Great for date night or eating out w/ the kids.

Try the empanadas!! You can order them for lunch also even though they aren't on the lunch menu. They are absolutely delicious! Perfectly crisp on the outside, deliciously cheesy and well seasoned chicken inside! Yum...now I'm hungry again...

I thought I had reviewed this before, but apparently that happened on Urban Spoon (blasphemy, I know!) On my first visit I was VERY impressed with the service and the queso. However, my fish tacos were NOT my favorite. I am kind of a fish taco connoisseur, if I may say so myself. I found it to have nowhere near the right amount of cabbage or dressing. I said so on the other review. Lo and behold, I went in here for a second visit and all this was changed. Excellent amount of yummy dressing and plenty of cabbage and cheese. I loved them. I'm not sure if they watch Yelp etc but it sure seems like it. Negatives from other reviews have been fixed as well. You just can't go wrong with a small restaurant that is willing to make customer-driven changes. The salsa, I could drink it. The queso is fresh and delicious. It is made with real cheese so you need to eat it fast or it becomes grainy as it goes back to being a solid. The Huevos Rancheros is good as well. I like it. It's a small, quiet place with good service and yummy, fresh food. My only complaint?? PLEASE PLEASE get rid of the ELEVATOR MUZAK!!! It doesn't have to be the stereotypical Mexican mariachi stuff, but I feel like I'm in a waiting room - the exact opposite of how I want to feel when I want to enjoy this delicious food.

I ordered from this restaurant using GoWaiter and the service was great. Everything arrived hot and appeared well prepared. I ordered the mango shrimp which was good. My complaint is with the rice & beans. The rice was hard and the beans were so thick. Although it appeared well presented, there was a lack in taste. I actually threw out most of the meal. The portions are very good and I had plenty of left over but some foods don't re-warm well. All in all I wouldn't say I would never go back but I'd have to sample other restaurants in the area first. This place is ranked on of the best in the area but it depends on whether or not you know cultural foods. I cook my own ethnic foods so for me this fall short of my expectations.

The food was fresh and Delicious! We had the hard shell tacos and the chimichanga and I recommend it. The waitress was great about steering me away from the spicy choices, so overall I am happy and can't wait to go back.

when the wait services is not flirting with the teenies in the restaurant, the atmosphere is quite appealing. the food is good, but not great and is a bit more price wise than i expected. would i go back, probably not.

The best Mexican food in Dothan by far. Empanadas, mango shrimp tacos, and pork enchiladas are personal favorites.

I can't say enough about the freshness of the food here. The place is clean and staff knows the food well. Dined here three times and each time it was excellent.

  • Jay S.

Quality mexican food right here. My chimichanga was fried to perfection and the salsa was wonderful. All the ingredients tasted fresh and had just the right texture. My server was really friendly too. Oh and the queso dip is one of the best I've ever had. It's creamy and you can actually taste the cheese in it (unlike other places) - gasp!. The refried beans were a bit salty but not bad either.

Oh, wow! I hate that I can't find a better word than that, but I was speechless. I was just so blown away by the freshness of the food. How wonderful to have a restaurant in Dothan...nay, the whole Wiregrass area, where fresh is the main ingredient. Not a huge menu and when I first looked at the offerings, I was less than impressed. It is the typical Mexican restaurant menu, so I wasn't really expecting much difference in the flavors. I am so happy to report that I was so wrong. The flavors were so distinct, not muddled like typical Mexican restaurant food. I had the Chili Rellanos and the poblano pepper was fresh, not canned. The flesh of the pepper had a tender crunch. The chicken and cheese filling was expertly seasoned. Oh, and I have never had a dessert better than the Mexican Wedding Cake. Everything; the food, ambiance, service, was spot on. Went by there today, hoping to have lunch only to discover that they were not open on Sundays. Oh, well, I guess everyone is entitled to a day of rest.

This restaurant is AWESOME and AMAZING!!! The food is delicious! My husband and I, along with my sisters, stopped by here after reading some reviews and seeing some of the photos on yelp. The photos looked better than La Parrilla (the restaurant we would have gone to if we hadn't looked at reviews...but glad we didn't go there) so we decided to go here. We are definitely glad we did!!! The quality and service went BEYOND our expectations!! We had chips and salsa to start, they serve this to you free) and then we decided to add the queso. The queso was amazing! It was what queso should be!! It definitely tasted better than chain restaurants' queso!! For our lunch/dinner, I had the enchiladas verdes and they were incredible! The sauce had a little kick and there was a good ratio of chicken to cheese. They also serve black beans, which I love, and they were seasoned very well!! My husband had the same thing I did and he finished his whole plate and he's usually picky with Mexican food. One of my sisters had a HUGE quesadilla which she said was really good and cheesy. My other sister chose the EMPANADAS (which were incredible!). She let me have a bite of them and I was jealous of her the whole time we were there. I'm definitely going back for those empanadas!!! We decided to indulge in some dessert: ooey gooey chocolate cake and the Italian wedding cake (which is made fresh at the cafe). The Mexican wedding cake is the best dessert I've ever had at a restaurant. It was fresh and flavorful!! I wish I had known about this cake before my wedding!! Yes, it was that great!!! I am definitely coming back to this restaurant! I want them to stay in business because Dothan doesn't have a lot of great restaurants to choose from and if they close their doors, it will definitely be a great loss to Dothan.

I love this place! I have been to eat here 4 or 5 times and I haven't come up with a single bad thing to say. The staff is friendly and quick. I had the Chimichanga several times and it was great. The wrap was nice and fluffy not too soft or hard and the stuffing tastes great. My wife has had something different every time and hasn't been let down yet.

We had dinner at Cactus Flower Cafe last night. The food was very good. We got queso dip and guacamole as starters. The queso dip was grainy in texture, which may just prove their claim that much of their menu is made fresh to order. The guacamole was a refreshing pile of avacado chunks with tomato and onion. They left no doubt it had been made fresh. The salsa that came with our chips mostly tasted like onion. For dinner I got a chimichanga. It was good but could have used less cheese. My son's quesadilla was huge, overlapping the edges of the plate. My husband and older son also enjoyed their meals. One suggestion - please call the "smashed beans" what they are, namely refried beans. No one knows what "smashed beans" are. For dessert we got a piece of Mexican wedding cake and 4 spoons. The Mexican wedding cake comes with real whipped cream on top and the bottom lightly soaked in some sort of sweet sauce. We all liked it. Overall we were pleased with our experience at this restaurant. Our main complaint is the draft. It was very cold last night with an expected low of 27. Every time someone opened the door, the dining area was flooded with cold air. This means the space will also be difficult to cool in summer. I suggest to management that they flip flop the dining rooms and use the larger second room as their main space. When we go again we will request to be seated in the second room. If Cactus Flower will make this change, they will be perfect. The music was low. The furniture was comfortable with perfectly proportioned tables and chairs. The room was well lit. Welcome to Dothan, Cactus Flower! Here's wishing you many years of success.

Will never go again. I feel robbed going just once. The food is very expensive, and forget "Southwestern" flavor; try "an American who can't cook at all's flavor." Seriously, a child can make better queso dip at home with Velveeta, jarred jalapenos, and milk for less than half the price. The salsa was just sad. My husband got the chimichanga (can't go wrong with that, right? Wrong.), and it tasted like it had cheddar cheese in it, mild cheddar cheese to boot, and that was about it. Fried mild cheddar cheese. I wasn't super hungry after the queso I ate just because it was expensive, and so I ordered just the chicken tortilla soup. It was the only thing with flavor--the fool proof lime, cilantro, and black pepper in chicken broth, but they served it in a small bowl which would've counted as less than a cup's worth at other restaurants, and the chicken included was less than you'd get in a grilled chicken wrap at McDonald's.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
