Love the new menu, great overhaul. Went from dive bar (GREAT dive bar, don't get me wrong) to a trendy, hip spot with really good tapas and still managed to maintain the soul of the original place. Still one of the best sound systems for live music, super fun if you have little kids to come in on Fridays from 5-8 (such a smart business move for them!) and you can still get a great drink. Oh yeah... DEFINITELY try the bacon wrapped dates!

Stopped in last night for some appetizers and drinks before a concert. So nice to happen upon the Top Hat during happy hour! Our server was amazing. Even as the place started really filling up and getting busy, she kept up with us as our table grew from four to about 10 or 12 people! Props to her for making our experience even better! Happy hour flatbreads were okay, not the flavors we were expecting (Thai chicken was very peanutty and not very Thai spiced, bacon date was SO overly greasy and too rich). The best food item was the calamari by FAR! So tender and perfectly cooked, and the sauce with it was spot on. I heard they recently remodeled and the look of it is great! Industrial with warm touches, raw wood and copper table tops. Great branding on menus and just a nice look overall. I will be back next time I am in Missoula!

The Top Hat is the premiere music club in Missoula. There's no disputing that. Ever since the change in ownership and new renovation, this place has been the place to go downtown to see live music.

Great venue since the remodel! Quick service, decent bookings, a breath of fresh air over the old top hat!

PROS: Good quality food and drink. Fun atmosphere CONS: Music was too loud, it was louder than a club which was unnecessary

Great place to start the weekend. Happy Hour was creative and GOOD. Great diversity of flavors and carefully prepared. Quite impressive actually. A nice way to start our Pride weekend in Missoula.

First off, the venue is great for music. The food taste pretty good......if you ever get it! I've dined there on several occasions. I've had ONE successful lunch. I've had SIX complete disasters while trying to order food for my wife and I in the evening. EVERY time in the evening my order has been lost or forgotten!!! The last incident occurred on Labor Day, 2015. While the place was busy, it wasn't slammed. I've worked in the food service industry for a good portion of my life and usually cut people a break in those situations. This however needs to be pointed out. All we ordered were two apps, calamari and flat bread. It took over half an hour for the calamari to come out.....cold. Another half an hour for the flat bread. The server informed us that our order got lost, but not to worry because they were working on it. When I told her that we couldn't pay for the flat bread, we were actually leaving and did not have time to eat it because we had to go, she took the flatbread and gave me the bill acting like it was us that were being unreasonable. No apology, nothing. If this were a one time incident I would just brush it off, but this has happened AT LEAST SIX TIMES! Why do I keep going back you may ask? Good friends, good music, good ambiance. But I won't be ordering any food again!

Loved the food, the service was extraordinarily poor. We had 12 people eating and drinking and trying to enjoy each other's company but we hardly could hear one another over the noise of the hockey game. We twice asked the waiter to turn down the sound without success. Like I said, the food was unbelievably good but our waiter couldn't have been more disinterested and unresponsive. It made for a frustrating evening.

Seriously the best place in Missoula for live music. They have a nice big dance floor and plenty of seating for table service. Food is pretty darn good. I've had hit or miss experiences with it. Just give it a try and see for yourself.

If you are at all skeptical to come here after the changing of the guard, come here during their happy hour 3-6. Order anything on this menu, anything that catches your eye. I promise you will not be disappointed. This place is my go to for happy hour. 4 dollar flatbread pizza.... I think I may have to cut this review short and head over there.

I've never had a bad experience at the Top Hat. Everyone who regularly hangs out there is incredibly friendly, there's a huge dance floor, great live music, wonderful dark lighting, quick service at the bar, it's always very clean and it has a great atmosphere. The back porch area is nice for stepping out for a cigarette and mingling with the crowd, and you can bring your drink out with you, which is great for smokers. It's always a good time at Top Hat

Best bar for shows in Missoula. I love the renovation--it's swanky in there now! Everyone who walks in has the same convo: "Oh wow, this place used to be a dive! Look at it now!" There's space for standing in the front or you can sit in the back. I have seen 3-4 shows in The Top Hat. If it's a weekend, chances are someone is playing. There are covers for bigger bands (Sir Mix-a-Lot just came, there was a cover to see him, duh!) but smaller shows are free. I already have so many great memories of seeing wonderful bands play here. I can not speak to the food, but the drinks are good. They are a little pricier than other bars downtown, but for some free music I will happily shell out $1-2 more a drink.

I wish I had better things to say because I've always enjoyed my time at the top hat. But when you get carded at the door and at the bar AND then the security guys drag you out of the crowd by your arm it's never a good experience. It's really disappointing because it's a lawsuit waiting to happen...when they leave bruises on some girl....

Drinks & tapas - Missoula's best happy hour spot. It's fancy bar food, but overall rather tasty. We come here a lot. Go for the bacon date flatbread, lamb empanadas & pork belly dishes. Stay away from the calamari (we've tried it a few times, but it's always over done). The dessert menu tends to be rather disappointing so don't get your hopes up.

Hubby and I had tapas: braised pork belly, lox, calamari, mini meatball flatbread, pepperoni flatbread. At first we thought we'd ordered too much food. But once we started tasting, we quickly devoured all of the above. I thought surely one would be a dud, but it was happily not to be! I had a Captain and Diet Coke as well as their Jimi Hendrix. Both were excellent. We arrived at 8:30 on a Friday, which was just perfect for hitting dinner while the family-friendly segment headed out but before the music started and the dance floor filled. If we wanted to stay for music, we were in a prime spot for watching/dancing. But alas, not this night. Next time! The remodel is great with plenty of room for dancing. There was a bachelorette party enjoying the raised seating area. Looks like they were having fun! I will be back for sure!

This is one of my favorite places to eat in town. Great food, great beer selection and above average service. As to the person complaining about food being brought out at different times, it's a Tapas place. That's how tapas are served. You each pick out a few things and then you share them with the table. You don't each get your own individual plate. They bring out a few things, you all eat those and then they bring out more. The food is fanatic. They have one of the best vegetarian menus in town, and their meat and seafood are fantastic, as well. They switch up the menu every season so nothing gets old, but many of the favorites stay throughout the year (like the brussel sprouts and calamari). It's a great place to go with a group of friends, order a bunch of food and share everything around the table. I get the brussel sprouts almost every time I go in. The pepperoni flat-bread was also a favorite before I stopped eating meat. Really, you can't go wrong here. They also have the best happy hour in town! They have a selection from their main menu available for $4 a piece, and draft beer for just $2.75. And that's not even mentioning the music venue. Best music venue in the state, hands down! The amount of great music they get coming through is incredible. I must attend 4 or 5 concerts there a month, both local and nationally touring artists. They have something going on every night of the week.

This place made me wish I lived closer to Missoula! Food was incredible, staff friendly, drinks are well made and the wooden back bar is beautifully stocked and quite impressive. Bathrooms were clean and the layout great for diners and music goers alike. Caught a great show there that I had bought tickets to before our trip to Montana and already can't wait to come back!

Amazing tapas, try the flatbread! I always look forward to their seasonal menu. There's always so many different foods to try. Every Friday they have a family friendly night with music. If you get there any later than 5:30 you will not get a table or even a seat at the bar, it's very crowded & loud. If you go there on a Friday (unless it's later than 9pm) I suggest you get there by 5pm so you can get a spot. I believe they have a happy hour starting at 3 or 4pm. Half price flat breads & discounted local brews. Can't go wrong with that! In the fall during the NFL football season, every Sunday The Top Hat will play the Packers games on a huge projection screen. They have a Wisconsin themed menu for Packers games- including cheese curds! Being a Wisconsinite myself, I thoroughly enjoy this! GO PACK GO! I've never gone to a show at The Top Hat but plan to eventually go see one. The atmosphere is very nice since it has been remodeled. It's a warm & friendly environment & would recommend any & everyone to check it out!

I'm reviewing the lunch service here, not the club. The room is great; dark wood, huge old fashioned bar, large windows - feels ilke a big city place. There's a nice selection of apps, sandwiches, and salads. The food was good, though the spiced walnuts in my salad were candied and too sweet. The sandwiches are not the two-fisted type found at Tamarack and Iron Horse, but I welcome not having to face something the size of a car battery at lunch. Draft beer selection was big and tasted very fresh. I'll be back.

I'm writing a review about the new and improved Top Hat which reopened recently. I've been going to this place before the remodel and didn't think much of it but it's a whole different story since they reopened. First off, they have food? SAY WHAT? Yes, that's right. The Top Hat is now a Tapas restaurant as well. I tried about 5 of the dishes and was very impressed with what they had to offer. I don't know if they have a rotating menu like the Silk Road nearby but everything on the menu looked appetizing. In terms of the decor inside, it definitely feels way more open in there. They took down the dividing wall that really opened up the seating area more. They have tables for a sit down meal as well as booths to lounge in. It's still a little loud in there but it's not too crazy. I really like the new Top Hat with my only concern being the service. Since it just opened, they'll need a little bit of time of fine tune everything. I expect them to tighten that up soon and be one hell of a place of to be in Missoula!

Waitress was rude. Waitress let a 7 y.o. Order pizza without his parents permission and then kept it on the tab.

goodness food (we had the salmon and black bean soup); both were tasty and well cooked. the environment is lively and youthful, but good for all walks of life. The service was attentive and friendly.

Tuesday tried ordering the clam and shrimp plates but they were out. Chicken drumettes were just ok. The calamari were sliced thin lengthwise so tasted nothing but batter. Though the pepperoni flatbread was really good, we ended up ordering a second one for lunch. We came back later in the evening for the Polyphonic Spree concert and they were awesome.

The tapas menu is excellent and fills a nice void in the Missoula dining scene. The service is always prompt and friendly with out being over bearing or intrusive. The decor is warm and they have Black foot IPA on tap as well as many other local beers. Great place to enjoy a beer and watch a show or grab a bite to eat.

Love the new Top Hat. Great Tapas style food and comfortable atmosphere. Many local Montana beers to choose from.

We went to the Top Hat for an early dinner. We started with 3 or 4 tapas, but everything was so excellent that we kept ordering more. The ahi tuna and beef brisket were my favorite, but then for an encore we had the bacon-wrapped dates, and I have to say it's the best dish I've had at any restaurant. My husband and I brought our 9 year-old son with us, and at a lot of places when there is great food for adults, there isn't much for kids. But my son had the cheese flatbread pizza from the kids' menu, and said it was great. He really had fun eating it off the wood plank branded with the Top Hat logo, too. Definitely going back!

This place was great! I was in town visiting my brother and sister in law and they suggested this place to our group as they heard good things since Top Hat's remodel. We were a group of 15 mixed with adults and kids wandering around downtown on a Saturday enjoying the farmers/craft market. Top Hat happily accommodated our group and rearranged tables to suit us. The food was delicious, it's tapas style so we all ordered a little off the menu and shared everything, there was something for everyone in our group of meat eaters and vegetarians, the kids happily got by with the chicken drummetts and flatbread selections. The prices were adequate to the quality of food and portions. I will definitely come back next time I'm in Missoula and I know my brother and sister in law will frequent The new and improved Top Hat. Did I mention they have live music most nights there? I look forward to enjoying a performance there as it is such an intimate setting.

the price is fair, the service is always good, i love the atmosphere. the happy hour is a+ and their new menu is awwwwweeeesoooommmeee... but something about their flatbreads? they smell really really bad???? maybe it's just me??? but every time we go, someone at my table orders one (or two, or three) and i spend the entire time trying not to vom everywhere.

I used to frequent this place when I lived in Missoula because of the shows and the relaxed crowds that came along with them. Visiting town again, I was eager to see the new renovations while catching up with some friends. My first impression was that it felt a bit classier: like the James Bar, but not as uppity. As I sipped on my beer, I noticed the crowd had changed a lot. More Iron Horse-esque than I cared for, really, but I wasn't there to judge the people. My friends and I spent quite a while standing around before finding a seat, which felt a lot more awkward with the new setup...almost like wherever you stood, you were in the way of someone's view of the stage. We had attempted to sit to the right of the stage on a bench that seemed empty, but a group way down the line informed us that the whole stretch of the bench was reserved for their party of 13. I thought this was a little rude of them to do considering there was no notification of this (a reserved sign) and I wasn't sure they could even do that, but we got up and stood around some more. Once seated, we were given menus for the restaurant, but the waitress never came back to take our order with 2 hours left to serve. It almost felt like she was avoiding our table. Even if this was not the case, I did not feel like the new setup would be very conducive to food service with all of its crevices and nooks. Like my friends and I were forgotten, I feel this could happen A LOT if not managed well. Maybe my experience was not representational of the quality of service now, but I don't think I will be back any time soon. All things considered, I miss the old Top Hat!

The food is excellent and well priced. If you're looking for a light bite to keep you going while out for drinks or have a group and don't want to sit down for a formal meal THIS IS THE PLACE! The menu has a great variety for meat eaters and vegetarians. Portions are proper and all around I think they are nailing it. A few favorites so far; BRUSSELL SPROUTS FOR SURE!, shrimp, TUNA IS GREAT, order a flat bread to top it off and fill up if need be. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Very disappointing. Loved the lunch we had a couple of weeks ago and were looking forward to the new menu and a nice dinner last night - never happened. We arrived to find a fundraiser (Indian Runner film) in progress and asked the host if the event would impact the service/wait time/etc..., he assured us that the fundraiser's food was mostly pre-prepared and that it wouldn't impact us at all. Unfortunately, he was mistaken. Our server came quickly for a drink order, and upon returning with our waters asked if we'd decided on anything, at which point I advised her we were both really hungry and asked her to start two dishes right away and come back in a bit to get more of our order. The server returned empty-handed five minutes later and asked if we'd "decided on anything else," at which point we ordered two more dishes and off she went. Ten minutes later (honestly) our server, still empty-handed, asked if "we'd decided on anything else!" I looked forlornly at my clean, white plate and responded that we hadn't had "anything" yet, so how could we want "anything else?" She walked off without comprehending. At 25 minutes (I swear) we got up to leave, half-empty waters and gleaming clean plates the only evidence of our having been there. I went to tell the host we were done waiting and were leaving, while the STILL EMPTY-HANDED server arrived and asked why we were going, assuring us that our food was coming right out - she didn't even have the sense to just apologize and let us leave - she had to make my girlfriend as uncomfortable as possible in an attempt to salvage the situation. Totally un-cool. So, the food there might be good (we haven't sampled the new menu yet,) but the service is beyond deplorable. The venue seems too concerned with its events at night to adequately manage it's restaurant. I suggest lunch if you're set on going - it seems to be a more food-centric.

So I live on the road", different city every week. The joys of consulting. Got to Missoula ( first time visit) and was on east coast time. Needed a bit to eat about 3;30pm because the business dinner wasn't until 7pm--ouch..10 pm my time. Found the Top Hat on Yelp. Got there during their HH..which is $4 tapas and flatbreads. Had the curried chicken skewer. Ordered it with low expectations....remember it's $4. The attention to detail, the blend of flavors was on par with a fine dining boutique restuarant. ( Loved the saffron honey!) Had a nice glass of wine with it....bill $8! Really....that's crazy. No the dish wasn't a meal but I returned the next night and had two tapas. ( Love the blue cheese, bacon date flatbread and another chicken skewer. Okay so now it was enough for my dinner....two nice glasses of wine...bill $16. Dinner and wine...crazy. I wish I was in Missoula longer because if they do this during HH I can't imagine what the chef has in store for me off the regular menu. I will be back!! Oh, and BTW, I live in Wisconsin and apparently on GB Packer game days this morphs into a Packer Bar. Now heck with Happy Hour, I want to be here on a Sunday!

I am a local and had to try out the new and improved Top Hat. The wait staff was extremely friendly and were trying very hard, but they were very slow because they were so busy. My personal feeling is that if you are that busy, you should hire more staff to ensure that all patrons are happy. We took our toddler to the Family Friendly Friday and had a blast. My little girl was out on the dance floor and it was a free for all with kids and so no one cared that they were running around like crazy people. The next week, I went to see Eric Tolifson at an adult show and had a blast. There were a ton of people in there and the band was awesome. They have a nice cocktail menu. The flat bread pizzas and calamari are delicious. Overall, very promising and I hope they keep up the good work!

Went to one of my favorite spots, the Top Hat last night for a great Wallin' Jennys show. Really appreciate the chance to see good music in a place with good sound and acoustics, not the average bar sound. Service is always great, and drinks are well priced. Love the new paella croquettes on the summer menu.

I have always enjoyed the top hat. It was one of the first bars I went to when I first moved to Missoula. I love the small venue feel and the old style bar. Now that it has been renovated, it is even better. I love that it is now a restaurant with a tapas style menu. The menu was to die for. It was really hard to decide what to order since everything looked good. We went with the shrimp, the butternut squash ravioli (that was my favorite), the calamari, and a couple of flat breads. OMG! Everything was so tasty. The only bad thing I have to say about the top hat is that they need to hire more servers. It was super busy in there and our server was slammed so the service wasn't the greatest. Other than that, I plan on coming back here for dinner.
