Not terrible, but not anything to brag about either. I had the Blackened Prime Rib sandwich. The prime rib was tender and good, but could have really used some blackened crust and flavor. I was expecting it to be sliced thin on bread, but instead it was a thick slice of prime rib between 2 pieces of bread. It was a very tender cut of meat and surprisingly easy to bite into. I wasn't fond of the lettuce, tomato, onion, and sprouts that came as a side garnish for the sandwich. I would have preferred some cheese instead. The Caesar salad was not great and a little soggy, rather than fresh and crisp.

Great prime ribs and especially love their desserts!

The food is very good. I am particularly fond of the blackened prime rib. It seems that if you get asparagus you'll be ok, but I wouldn't get lettuce here as it seems to be wilted. The best thing to be done here is to have the shrimp won tons and a beer out on the deck. The meals are WAY over priced for what you get.

Blackened prime rib was probably the best I've ever had. Cocktails were well made. Fried calamari was nothing special, too heavily breaded for my liking, but the steak, man, the steak was memorable! Super attentive waitresses, and some nice private rooms for dinner parties.

I've only sat at the bar side of The Depot, they have a pretty good bar menu. Try the the bbq chicken pizza! In the summer time they have a small patio seating area. They're usually pretty busy though but it's a fun place to enjoy good food & a brew.

Best Prime Rib in Montana! All of the food here is great! Friendly staff and great service! It's not a cheap place to eat but worth the cost! They do have meals at lower price points. I come here 3 to 4 times a year from Seattle! Yum!

Try the deck for more of a casual meal. Steak sandwich is my fav. Restaurant is great too. A little spendy for a weekly thing but DELICOUS!

Amazing experience! Great service and wonderful prime rib. Two friends and I drove to The Depot from Portland, OR. We are fans of crime novelist James Crumley, who frequented the bar here often. The owners were kind and genuinely delighted that we liked Crumley's books. The prime rib was out of this world. We left wonderfully satisfied with just the right touch of nostalgia.

I don't know about their entire menu, but we tried the blackened prime rib at a friend's recommendation (not what I would usually have ordered), and it's the best prime rib I've had in Missoula by far. Order the garlic mashed as a side, and you won't be sorry. I should caution that it is well seasoned and may not be appreciated by people who don't prefer spicy food. I think it's the best in town and in the top five I've had nation-wide.

This place is fantastic. The atmosphere is casual yet elegant. The service is fantastic and the food is amazing. I ordered the blackened prime rib with asparagus as a side and the house Cabernet. First of all...don't bother ordering the 22oz, I ordered the 14oz and I don't know who is measuring these, but that was the biggest 14oz's I have ever seen...I guess that's Montana for ya. Anyway, it was very heavily seasoned, so if that's a turn off for you then maybe you shouldn't order it "blackened", but it was absolutely fantastic. I love this place. I live in Seattle and I would make the trip to Missoula just to eat this prime rib. Cooked to perfection, one of the best I have had anywhere. Definitely recommend the Depot, you will not be disappointed.

Usually I rate this place five stars for some of the best blackened shrimp on the planet, the sunny evening Deck, and they are one of the few places open on Sunday evening in Missoula. But last night, 9/19/15 the chef wasnt doing so good. The shrimp were overcooked and gritty because the blackening seasoning was so charred. Called Shrimp Santa Fe, they are served with a Chimmichuri of Capers, New Mexican Chili, and I'm guessing parsley and cilantro. Usually they are spicy and Oh So Good! Last night, even the Chimmichuri had grit in it. (Did they not wash the herbs?) The mushrooms, usually served in a beautiful wine broth, were doused in butter. I tried the ceviche for the first time and it was so bland, just one note of lime and only made with fish. No shrimp, calamari, or scallops. Had a mango Margarita which had great flavor, but I forgot to ask for it on the rocks, and my waitress didn't ask either and they automatically served it blended. I hate blended margaritas. Wings were ok. So now, I don't know when we'll be back. But unfortunately there aren't a lot of options around for Sunday evening.

Amazing meal. Blackened prime rib was great as was the garlic steak. Mushroom appetizer and the oysters were good. Huge wine list. If you cannot fine anything here that you do not love you are too picky.

review is for the dining room section. This place is amazing. My husband and I have been in search for a good steakhouse in Missoula. This place definitely takes the cake! (And we are steak snobs) I ordered the blackened prime rib and it was cooked perfectly! It's always a hit or miss when I ask for something to be cooked medium. And oh my God the mashed potatoes were to die for! I could eat a bucket of those! Service was great too. Ambiance felt very fancy in comparison to the deck bar part of the restaurant. Perfect place for a date night!!

  • Dawn M.

We stopped here for the final dinner of our vacation. What an an amazing meal. The wine list was extensive, mushroom appetizer was outstanding and the steak I ordered was cooked to perfection. Our table of four all agreed this was one of our top 5 meals. Well done!

I had halibut, my wife had the flat iron steak. Both excellent. Very good service. A good experience

  • Matt F.

My dad and I have been coming to visit Missoula every summer for over a decade, and the majority of our dinners have been spent at The Depot. The food, the wine list, and the staff have all made each meal great. The blackened prime rib is their speciality, but you really can't go wrong with any of their meats/steaks. Also, their specials are on point, never disappointing - the Chilean sea bass was incredible. The salad bar always has the freshest ingredients too. Definitely recommend, and will be seeing them again next year!

I guess it is asking a lot to have a great meal in such a small town in the middle of nowhere. We were recommended to try this place from our caddie. First issue is that none of the meat is prime, which is unquestionably the best meat. Only choice served here. Had the prime rib which was decent. Baked potato was cold, wedge salad was fine, nothing bad but nothing great other than the cool artwork of a local artist adorning the walls. Server was really good, just nothing exceptional food wise. 3.5 stars probably right on the mark.

  • Nelson M.

My wife and I came here for dinner July 31, 2015. We always come here when we come to Missoula. I always get the blackened prime rib. This evening it was excellent. It was tender and marbled. The "half-size portion" was more than I could eat. My wife had the flat iron steak which was also great. There is a self-service salad bar with lots of fresh vegetables to choose from. The only thing that keeps it from being five star is the ambience. It seemed over commercialized. It is however a classic Missoula steakhouse and well worth going to if you like prime rib.

  • Meg G.

Overpriced to the nines. For what you pay for even a half dish you'd think they'd have their employees dress nicer. A cheap Polo with a tacky logo on it doesn't scream thirty dollar dishes. The food is decent, their garlic mashed potatoes are great.

  • Tyler M.

By far, my favorite restaurant in town. We have dinner here usually every couple weeks and the last time we were eating, I said to myself, "I can honestly say I've never had a bad experience here." The employees are very friendly and professional. Also, the owners tend to spend quite a bit of time here making sure everyone is completely satisfied and nothing went unchecked. They definitely don't micromanage, but instead roll up their sleeves and help out wherever is needed - something you rarely see. I highly recommend virtually anything on their dinner menu, although it's a little pricey. If you're looking for a more relaxing environment, I recommend heading to their back bar/patio area and ask for the bar menu. Personally, I am a big believer in getting what you pay for. You can't go wrong with either menu because their food is always top notch. On the bar menu, the sandwiches are all great as are their burgers, but I highly recommend the pizza - chicken pesto pizza to be exact. It is perfect... You definitely won't regret coming here and if you ever have a problem - just point it out to the awesome staff because I guarantee they would be willing to accommodate you, although I've never had this problem.

great staff, decent meals for the price... and best of all its clean. I go there a lot and never have any problems... foods always hot n tasty no matter what I order

    (5)
  • Jamie K.

Low quality steak for a high price. No seasoning. Uses choice is the lowest quality and they don't season their meat. 8oz choice steak for 35 dollars with one side. Not impressed.

Just a classy joint. The best salad bar in town! I am always looking for a good salad bar and it just doesn't get any better.

  • Deborah O.

I'm from Oregon and travel for work... I can not come to Missoula and not stop here for the blackened prime rib. It is the best I have ever eaten.... My mouth will water if I even begin to plan a trip to Missoula. It is excellent! 1/2 order is plenty

    (5)
  • Ryan C.

I used to give them 5 stars without hesitation. The staff is awesome, the atmosphere is great, but the prices compared to the food quality is way out of whack. $18 for fried fish and chips? $14 for shrimp won tons that taste like frozen? Nope. I'll come back when they get real with their prices or up the quality to equal the price.

    (2)
  • Jenny S.

To much money for mediocre food. I paid $12 for literally one of the worst salads I've ever tried to eat (Mediterranean, supposedly, but was iceberg lettuce topped with tasteless artichokes, gritty tomatoes and flavorless olives. ) I barely touched it.

Like others, we were directed to this restaurant by some locals who raved about the steak. Being in Montana, we felt it was appropriate to much some beef, so we headed here. I'll get right to it and let everyone know the food is NOT worth the price. This restaurant has three atmospheres. Entering through the back doors you'll first encounter the super casual bar, then you'll go through a second bar that's not quite as casual as the first. In fact, they look like two different establishments. Then there's the dining room, where we ate. It's outdated, dim, and quiet. Not a bad thing, but if I had known the tired atmosphere was going to transfer to the food I never would have sat down. The menu was, like others stated, tired, boring, and overpriced. For some reason I expected the menu to boast organic, local meats and seasonal vegetables. I mean, it's Montana and this is a steak house. Unfortunately the menu might as well have read like this: Meat. Potato. $32. You eat. I ordered the fillet mignon ($31.95) and it allowed for one side. I chose mashed potatoes. My friend ordered the New York ($22) and a baked potato. The meat was flavorless, to say the least. No salt, no pepper--nothing. I was surprised, and disappointed, that this otherwise beautiful hunk of meat was treated so poorly. The mashed potatoes and baked potato were swimming in butter and sour cream, respectively. If I complain about the amount of butter and sour cream, you know it's bad. I also toured the salad bar and it was nothing to write home about. The best part of the restaurant was watching the behavior of the teens traveling through the restaurant. I never would have known they were employees had they not been entering and leaving the kitchen in such droves. One of the "chefs" that was working the broiler in the dining room was wearing shorts and a chef jacket. Interesting combo. He was also a snot when we tried to be friendly with him. Although the food isn't bad, it IS a rip off. The prices far exceed the quality and I just can't recommend it.

We used to go regularly to the D for prime rib and steaks. It is a classy place in a casual way, a bit pricey for Missoula and Montana and the menu has remained unchanged for years. Ingredients are not necessarily local, but that can be good or bad. We stopped going there, on principle, when the owner publically criticized veterans as dirty vagrants that he did not want around. Pretty foolish to be so negatively expressive in a state with one of the highest veteran populations in the nation, and that has hurt patronage. Montana, especially outside of the university areas, is a very patriotic state. Too bad as the D was one of the rare decent eateries in Missoula.

I have eaten at the Depot several times. The food and service have always been good. I took some guests there tonight and had a very mediocre meal and poor service. They were not busy and the waitress was not prompt taking our order and then got one of the orders wrong. We got shrimp instead of scallops. The shrimp was not good and the scallops were not much better. Overall, the bread and the potatoes were the best part of the meal. I won't be going back...

The prime rib, scallops, and salad bar are worth every penny!

I can't claim credit for picking this place - the customer did - but THAT should tell you something if locals want to go here with The Vendor for dinner... The place was hopping for a cold Wednesday night. We ate in the restaurant proper, but the two bar areas are as big and there were just as many people eating/drinking in there as there were in the dining room. Service was great. They definitely have the "team" thing down because we had no fewer than five different waitresses attend to us throughout dinner. I didn't look too much at the menu - I went with the recommendation of one of my dining companions to get the prime rib (I got the smaller size and it was HUGE). The one thing he forget to tell me was to get it blackened, so when both of our meals came out, he groaned and let me try his. +1 for the server because she saw this and offered to get mine blackened. The kitchen did it lickedy-split and I was a very happy carnivore! They have a good selection of beers on tap. I tend to be a "Coors Light" type guy, so the server suggested a local brew called "Eddy Out" and it was good and light. One guy ordered the mud-pie and it was enough for five of us to share. I did not get the salad bar and only ate a bid of the bread and I was stuffed. Good grub!

Always consistent and the best prime rib in town. The signature Sea Bass with soy ginger always good too. Great salad bar. Their wine list is awesome and good prices! You won't be disappointed. EVER

  • Lacey C.

Their restaurant is simply put: Not impressive. You'll pay more than $20 (every time) for a ho-hum entree that is usually just a piece of meat and a starch. However! Let me tell you about the bar... Depending on what group you're catering to, this is a go-to bar in Missoula. Have your in-laws or well-to-do family in town? The soft music, cozy fireplace, and sterling ambiance go a long way in this restored historic train depot that will impress anyone. Order a good (although, often overpriced) glass of wine and talk for a few hours over their mythic appetizers while the servers try to ignore you. Special favorites include their $2 well-drink specials, french fries, and homemade dressings and sauces. But whatever you do--don't pass up the seared tuna! And try 'the Deck' bar for the best patio in Missoula and more casual get-togethers.

OK, review is based upon a late Sunday visit, and the first day of spring break. Flat iron steak was mildly over cooked and garlic mashed potatoes were good. Scallops were very good, but veggies with them were OK. Son's burger was OK, at best. But all was way over priced. Friendly people, and decent beer selection, but food quality not equal price paid.

    (3)
  • Peter L.

Gets two stars only because of the great bar. I like sitting in a comfy couch next to a fireplace hanging out with friends. Don't bother eating here though. After the bland seared ahi and grilled shrimp that tasted burnt, I'm not sure why I kept up with the seafood theme and ordered a grilled yellowtail sandwich. it was so bad I sent it back and made myself a sandwich later at home.

Working in town and asked a few independent sources where I should go for a good dinner. The name "Depot Bar & Restaurant" came up each time. Needless to say I made my way there and it was good. I got the salad bar which is right next to the kitchen grill and I saw all the dishes coming out. They all looked great, the fish plates were huge servings. I got the end cut prime rib and it was one of the best I've had. There is a nice dining area and a big bar area so you have options.

The last few years we've spent Christmas Eve at the Depot. This review can be short and sweet... Service = fantastic. Always friendly, always attentive and on the occasion a mistake is made it's fixed quickly. Food = fantastic. Sure, it's not ground breaking stuff but it's damn good. It's not inexpensive but you get what you pay for, and I've got no complaints. Atmosphere = fantastic. There are a few places in Missoula that think to be a good restaurant you need to be pretentious. The Depot doesn't feel the need. They have good food, they have good service, they are not cheap. If you're cool wearing jeans and a tshirt and paying almost $40 bucks for a cut of meat, come on by. If you decide to try the Depot Deck (bar area in back) rather than the restaurant proper, may I suggest the prime rib sandwich. It's pretty damn great.

Great place, arrived here with a party of 6 after the Grizzly game the place was packed and loud. The waitress and host was most accommodating making us feel like "real customers" kudus to the management. Most of us had either steaks or prime rib and all were prepared and cooked to satisfaction. It is spendy but I don't mind paying for excellent food and service. If you want a good steak and atmosphere in Missoula I would recommend The Depot.

  • Jin P.

Good overall pricing and service. We sat on the deck which is nice (hot today tho!) and had 2 apps, pizza and an iced tea for under $40.

I ate here a few months ago but I was at the Lounge/Bar area and not the proper restaurant. Nevertheless, the menu at the bar was quite good. We ordered a pizza, chicken strips and ahi and they were all very tasty. I liked the comfortable seating near the fireplace. I should come again and eat in the restaurant proper.

I lived in Missoula before and was back on a visit. I was never too big on this place prior mostly due to the prices and what was served for those prices, however never had a horrible meal prior to last Friday. I ordered a chicken caesar salad. It came out wilted and lacking flavor. I look at this way: you F'd up a caesar salad there is not much more to say on the subject. I have cooked professionally in the past and I have to say it probably takes a fair amount of neglect to put together a really bad caesar salad. A $16 salad should at least have crispy romaine.

This is what happens when you let unexperienced, sloppy handed teenagers run your kitchen at a place that charges over $30 for a barely decent steak. You get a crappy review. Lets start with the good news. The service was ok, and the manager did the right thing at the end of the meal. The atmospere is upscale Montana americana, and the menu reads well. Our request at the salad bar for "just field greens without iceberg mixed in" was fulfilled, and they seem eager to please. Since we shared a meal, the waitress insisted that they split the main course for us, and even offered us our own choice of side. Nice. Bad news; The Garlic Filet with a "Cognac Dijon Demi" was destroyed. It was cooked properly, but the sauce tasted and looked like mashed potato gravy, and absolutely killed any chance of that steak tasting anywhere near good. We had to flag the cocktail waitress down to get ahold of Lauren, our server, who gave us a slight eye rolling at my request to have it cooked again, without the putrid sauce. But I couldn't leave it at that. I couldn't let them serve that train wreck of a sauce again. I found the manager and told him the deal. He disappeared for a few minutes, and came back to confirm my tastebud's suspicions. They had mixed chicken gravy in with the steak sauce. (I'm guessing they were trying to stretch what little they had.) The manager apologized, and comp'd our meal. The sauceless steak was more chewy than tender, and more flavorless than tasty. Not quite the prime beef they were advertising. The sides were ok, nothing special. If I had paid for that meal, I'd have been very sad. Just sayin, steer clear of The Depot until they hire some real chefs.

I used to take my dad here when he would come to visit. We lived in Missoula in the 80's when this was the place to go. The Depot deck is good but the restaurant part has really gone downhill. No more salad bar w/ your meal (now 5.99 extra) and a 8oz sirloin and potato was $24+. Too expensive for Missoula.

  • Darcy N.

Cool atmosphere in an old depot (hey, you never know). Nice staff, good beer selection. Didn't try the food but it smells & looks great. Menu is unique & very enticing, but does look a little pricey.

Very very good, fresh food. Great atmosphere.

  • San G.

Overpriced. Disappointing menu. The wild rice was over cooked mush. Our waiter was friendly and attentive but couldn't answer my questions about the lobster. Granted, it is Montana, but the lobster was a chewy disaster. For these prices I expected so much more.

  • L C.

Two sections of this place: 1) Bar: loud and noisy. 2) Restaurant: warm, cozy, quieter atmosphere. I had their soup of the day which was really like a beef stew. It was hearty, but a bit on the salty side. My friends ordered sandwiches and burgers which proved to be enormous portions. I'd come back if I was hungry and not craving anything in particular and wanted a warm setting. Waitresses appear to be under-dressed the actual environment which makes it unpretentious and a bit bizarre. It's not really an upscale restaurant, but it looks like it should be.

This place has ok food. It's overrated because it has been in Missoula forever and has become a staple.

The bar is cool but the food is gross.

My family and i have had a few homes in Missoula Montana for over 20 years. We take several family trips up here a year and make sure we hit up the Depot each time. The owner is very kind to us, and the service has always been pleasant. It features a pretty good atmosphere, with I believe 2 different bar sections. My brothers and dad love the prime rib, My mom is a big fan of the fish, and i stick with the filet and add grilled shrimp. It seems to be popular with the locals, and its nice to have this kind of restaurant that i can enjoy when on vacation

  • April B.

A friend told us this was "the best restaurant in Missoula." My eggplant sandwich was fine, even good. But the fries were no better than McDonald's fries, the service was spotty (it was a busy Friday evening). My husband order fresh tuna on a Caesar salad and said the salad was nothing special, but the tuna was good. Seemed a little expensive for the quality of food, but it was a weekend visit as out-of-towners, so we chalked it up to vacation. I would have been more upset if I lived there and ever planned on going back.

  • Erin M.

If you like fish, try the sea bass.... Yummy!! This place is pretty darn good:) one of my favorites:) Good service, good atmosphere and decent prices. If you're in Missoula, this should be on your list for dining out!

  • Bill E.

I'm giving 5 stars for the blackened prime rib sandwich because that is really all that matters! It's tasted THIS GOOD for YEARS! the service? Well, I think maybe someone (our server) did a few too many bong hits before work... I didn't really care though, I just wanted the sandwich.

I lived in Montana for a long time and I've been to the Depot a good handful of times. I have always had a good a experience there. They have a pretty good selection of food and their bar's have a good variety of beers & mixed drinks. The Depot has a deck that is open in the summer and is covered in the winter. It's a fun area to hang out and enjoy the night. The service and environment is friendly and I would recommend it for those interested in dinner and/or drinks.

    (5)
  • Padre C.

Went on the recommendation of the lady I sat next to at the Griz game. Wanted a place to watch a game, have a beer, and get a decent plate of food. The Depot filled all the requirements. Good atmosphere, chicken was good, had plenty of choices on the beer list, and several TVs each showing a different sporting event. To top it off our waitress was friendly, attentive, and informative to questions about the area.
