I'm really torn on how to rate this restaurant. The food is a terrible imitation of Mexican food, but it's so weird that it deserves some credit for being weird, sort of like Peewee Herman. My wife and I visited today for lunch. She had the taco plate and I had the enchorito plate (no, that isn't spelled wrong). The enchorito was the most bizarre thing I've had in a while. Think of a burrito with beef, lettuce, and shredded American cheese on the inside. Now, smother that in red enchilada sauce, and top it with olives, diced tomatoes, and sour cream. The lettuce being on the inside of a smothered burrito is what threw me for a loop. The meat flavor was nice, though; it tastes very homemade. And I liked the enchilada sauce, too. The plate came with rice and beans. The beans had more flavor than most refried beans I've had, and the rice was spicy from something other than normal ground chile (maybe it was black or white pepper, or paprika). The taco was bigger than a normal hard shell corn taco, and the shell was recently fried. It wasn't very crispy, just fried enough for the shell to hold its shape. Inside the taco was ground beef, a LOT of shredded iceberg lettuce, and the shredded American cheese. If you've never had Mexican (ish) food made with shredded American cheese, it's a strange experience. The texture of the stuff when it melts is just weird and gooey. My wife couldn't stand it, and only ate one and a half tacos from the three that came on her taco plate. But I liked it OK. The cuisine overall is like a photo copy of a photo copy. It's not really Mexican food, and it's not really Tex-Mex. What Taco Bell is to real Mexican food, Taco Treat is to Taco Bell. I imagine some years ago someone in Montana went to a Taco Bell, decided they liked the food, and decided to imitate it. Over decades, the concept morphed a few times, and got a few random injections of true Mexican food, such as the Tapatio hot sauce on every table. And now what we have is Taco Treat. If you are looking for Mexican food, you'll think this only deserves 3 stars out of 5, or worse. If you're looking for some new mutation with some homemade tastes, you may think it deserves 5 stars. I'll compromise and give it 4.

First I have to agree with the other posts: this is not authentic. That being said it is very good for fast food. Could not believe that we could get good fish tacos in Missoula but they have them here. Service has always been fast and friendly. Taco specials on Tuesday and Thursday are a great value. Enchiladas have a different sauce, not to my taste but other than that, good eats, cheap and fast.

My husband sometimes craves the enchiladas from here. He really likes their sauce, for some reason. The salsa does not taste homemade, but it may be. They do use chopped green onions so I gotta give them an extra star. This is his comfort food so it is fine about every six months or so. Judy H. Wright

For me, eating at this restaurant was the shining highlight of my summer. I turn nostalgic about the great food, and Montana. Taco Treat has been around Montana for many years. The locations are always changing. Currently, there are Taco Treats in Great Falls, Billings, Helena, Missoula, and perhaps some other towns in Montana. On a recent road trip through the vast beauty of the big sky state, I made a special effort to stop in at Missoula's Taco Treat. It was a good idea. I only ordered three things at Taco Treat. The beef enchiladas, beef tacos, and beef cheese crisp. All of them are amazing. First, the enchiladas are legendary. They consist of beef, cheese, tortillas, and sauce. This is Montana, and they don't garnish. You will not find any lettuce, olives, or sour cream on your plate of enchiladas. Anyway, these enchiladas are perfect. Don't ruin them. The cheese is American cheese. The sauce is Paprika and beef. This trio is melting inside and around two soft corn tortillas. It's divine. The tacos are great too. The shells are crispy and treated to a quick dip in hot oil. The cheese is shredded American cheese. Inside you will also find shredded lettuce and beef. I suggest topping the tacos with Taco Treat brand hot sauce. The last item I always order is the beef cheese crisp. It consists of beef, and American cheese melted on top of hard corn tortilla. This may sound like an item anyone can make in their oven, however Taco Treat's are better. Some people from Texas may knock Taco Treat for not being authentic Mexican food. Well, it's not trying to be. It is however, authentic Montanan food.

This is NOT authentic Mexican food. But I can get that anywhere. This is Taco Treat food, and for those of us who grew up eating it, it rocks! Try it with an open mind, you'll like it.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
