Finally got to the newly reopened Iron Horse Grill for dinner with two friends this weekend! When you enter, you'll immediately notice the great, laid back, Mississippi-meets-Texas atmosphere that I loved. With rustic accents, a window to see the guys cooking burgers and steaks with bags of mesquite chips sitting around and really great live music- you'll feel at home. The place was packed, but we were seated within a matter of minutes. The place is loud, so be prepared to speak up so your waitress can hear you. My friends and I decided to each order a different dish and share. We got: pork tenderloin fajitas, the iron horse burger and the fried shrimp poboy. The fajitas were my favorite with perfectly cooked tenderloin with peppers and onions mixed with a bacon jam and a side of toppings. The iron horse burger was perfectly cooked: charred outside and slightly pink on the inside and had great flavor. The shrimp poboy was just alright. The shrimp were large and lovely, but the batter needed more flavor. And they had great poboy bread, but didn't toast it. We had good service, reasonable prices and we all said we'd be back!

I enjoyed this location from when I lived in MS. This iteration not only looks great but the food - wow! I tried Chef Pierre's Habanero Pasta - Chef's signature Penne pasta, choice of Chicken or Shrimp, Habanero Cream Sauce, shredded Parmesan - and highly recommend with shrimp and an appetizer of queso with beef added. The chips were amazing due to crispness and seasoning. Support this local business often. They also seem to be a great night spot with a decent stage for musicians.

Great service and great good to go with it. I ordered the Etta James drink and it was perfect & refreshing! Or maybe because it was 90 degrees outside but either way it was good! The shrimp poboy was good as well even though I needed a little more comeback sauce. My friend ordered the chicken chimichanga and it looked super cheesy and delish! She said it was pretty darn tasty! No room for dessert although I really wanted the brownie Sunday with the candied bacon! Maybe next time!

My first time here was just recently, and I came with the whole family. We arrived a little early for supper, around 4:45pm. They sat us in the back, in a nice quiet area. Our server was Big Al, who was just fantastic the entire time. My family can be a little rough around the edges, and he handled them very well, and even threw in a little humor with them. We used our EatJXN cards for free queso, which was the bomb dot com. I had the Iron Horse Burger, which comes with guac and salsa atop a juicy beef patty. 'Twas as delish as it sounds. Big Al was very personable, and even told us the story of his recent weight loss, connected with us about our mutual love for dogs, and met our every need while we were there. The manager stopped by just to say hello and check and make sure we enjoyed out meal, which we really appreciated. I was just blown away by how great this place was, and it's truly due to the great customer service and our excellent server, Big Al. Will return again, and again, and again..

Great drinks, 16 draft beers great bartender decent prices. Great Service. I would recommend to anyone that likes craft beer. Craft beer is expensive everywhere but still a great place.

Looking for a unique place to eat during a day trip to Jackson and this place did not disappoint. Tasha, our server was very nice to us as we gave her our order. My surprise was that our food came quickly and was delicious. It looks like the place could be great for nightly music and a stage is prominently located at the far end. Don't forget to look for the chandelier made of guitars above the staircase to the second floor.

Excellent place for Sunday brunch! This is my first time back to this historic place since it reopened, and I'm not disappointed. Upscale, but casual dining, with a "fresh" feel. $12.95 for bottomless mimosa or bloody Mary is a great cure for a late Saturday night in downtown Jackson. The food is delicious, and the service has been impeccable! I'm a pleasantly surprised, and glad we picked this for lunch. While we ordered off the traditional menu, instead of the brunch station, I believe that either choice would have been the correct one. I will be back for sure. I'm not even a big fan of bloody Marys, but this is one of the best I've had!

Great place...I have never had it or even seen fried broccoli but I am a big fan! Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Fried chicken strips, cheese dip, tamales, quesadillas....it was great. My only problem is the location. Just really don't care for where the restaurant is located. Great restaurant, but....

Pretty much the only thing in town. There would literally be nothing in Jackson if this place wasn't here. Blackened catfish is effin amazing. Great beer selection too and love the local support.

One of the coolest restaurants in Jackson. Situated in the historical downtown this is a must see for any visitor. Great place for live blues music as well!

We have been coming to Iron Horse for the past year and a half while in town on business from Boston. The atmosphere, food and drinks here are the best you could ask for. Fried broccoli, queso, seasoned chips & salsa and the Etta James cocktail (especially when made by Michael the bartender) are some of the highlights. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for fabulous experience in Jackson.

As I live and breath.... the one thing people in Mississippi are good at is frying food... (because trust me I can fry like the best of them) And fried food is what stole the show during our dinner at The Iron Horse Grill... Now I'm not talking about my sister's fried chicken, or my mother's fried catfish fillet that they both enjoyed... or the fried okra we all ordered and my sister sent back twice because it wasn't fried hard enough for her... But I'm talking about battered and fried broccoli as an appetizer. Now if you thought broccoli was filling enough all by itself raw, steamed, blanched, roasted...you name it... bzzzrt you're wrong.... Broccoli is super filling when you fry it and after 2 pieces you want to wave the white flag!! Those big crispy nuggets of greenness were quite tasty and they're served with a side of queso for dipping, but I passed on the cheese and dipped mine in the salsa, which tasted even better. Now I must move pass the app and say that the food is pretty good. But as they were lacking in vegetarian options (the blackbeans are not vegetarian friendly), I chose a a few sides to dine on for an entree: fried okra, macaroni and cheese, and the vegetable of the day- sauteed squash and zucchini. So yes the okra was lightly fried but it was good okra, and when fried harder and crispier (the 3rd try for my sister) it's very good!!! The mac n cheese is pretty good as well... It's a light cheese sauce but still quite cheesy!! Now I did find the vegetable of the day lacking... Inconsistent cuts on the vegetables (slicers or mandolines come in very handy for that) meaning some pieces were cooked well whereas others were not. Also the seasoning was nonexistent as well. The onions the dish were sauteed in gave it a bit of seasoning but there wasn't any salt in the dish to save my life... So why didn't I ask our server for salt.... Well our server was quite interesting. He would disappear for very long periods of time and when he was talking to you he would look off (Squirrel... for those that have seen the movie UP... you know what Squirrel means) and turn back and say huh.... so yeah something was really off with him. We weren't sure if he was new or just disinterested but whatever it was atleast the food was good enough for him not to ruin our night. I mean it was just service I can't explain... But it wasn't good by no means... So overall, decent experience. Would've liked a different server to bump them up to a 4 but he was just off on so many levels... But I can say a good 3.5 is in order from me... 5 for that broccoli alone... Nice space, awesome wood burning smell when you walk in... would I mind going back... no, but we're not going to want that server ever again....

Great food at a reasonable price. The atmosphere is superb. Only problem was that the draft beer taps were mixed up and they kept bringing me the wrong beer. But the manager made it complimentary. Great staff!

    (4)
  • Verne C.

Delicious, prompt service, great price. Only reaso for 4 stars rather than 5 is because I didn't care for the green beans that accompanied the Chechen fried chicken.

It's times like this when yelp shows me the way! Came to Jackson for a wedding and had no idea where to go. Yelp pointed us here and I can't express strongly enough how genuinely sweet, efficient and welcoming the entire staff was. From the second you walk in you can notice the cleanliness-and the super cool decor. Industrial meets Mississippi modern but with a Manhattan twist. Our server suggested the Mahalia cocktail and it was spectacular!! Definitely perfectly mixed-It was like a spiked iced tea-But better. The chips they serve (complimentary) are seasoned with a secret 'iron horse' blend which we wished they sold because it was amazing. Our server was also quick to suggest more chips or salsa throughout our meal which was great. I ordered the iron horse salad with shrimp-it came in this light-crispy tortilla bowl with the top seasoned with what I can only describe as pure magic! (Maybe it was the spice blend again) everything about the salad was delicious. Everyone at the table loved their meals. My husband ordered a beer flight with all beers from Mississippi and what an incredible surprise! The manager checked on us about halfway through the meal and thanked us for joining them and when we left (had to buy a tee shirt) he said we hope you come back ! we knew he meant it. There's also some great history here and although we came for lunch we saw the stage where performers play. No doubt-you MUST come and check out the iron horse grill.

This place would make the rotation if I lived in Jackson. What a great place! Good service, great atmosphere and even better food. Stuffed catfish=amazing! Definitely recommended!

Had dinner here with a large group and loved it. Service was great, live music by Jason Turner, not too loud. My wife and I both had the Chicken Enchiladas. I had the Rebirth vodka drink and she had the margarita, both were great. Can't wait to go back.

Okay, this may not be fair but I gave it 3 stars to try to be. May have gotten here right after Happy Hour rush, but three people at the bar and the other 20' of it is empty except for being filthy and full of left over plates and food. Sit down and several minutes later bartender cleans up, by which I mean just takes away the plates in front of me. Went ahead and ordered a drink and he offers chips and salsa. The salsa is served in a small decanter which may look cool, but it is to thick to come out! It is worse than getting catsup out of a new bottle. Aftet shaking for a while I resort to my knife and can signed out a little at a time, but you have to fight for every bit. It is not like you break the seal and it comes out, it is more like a Chinese torture puzzle. It was all great when you could manage to get it out, but not worth fighting for my food. Headed to find somewhere else for dinner.

They appear to be on their way back up. Service was excellent. Our burger meal was very good. I didn't care much for the jazz music; I'd give it a 2. UpstaIrs decor was about a three. My dining view out the window was of the back side (mostly the dumpster) of what I think is Jackson's new Amtrak rail passenger depot. We could see at least the top half of the double-decker container freight trains that went by. Overall, I now give them a four, as their trend seems to be improving again.

This is a must-visit place in Jackson if you are looking for a great happy hour, good food and good music. I'm a regular at the Iron Horse, and can say that I have only once been disappointed with service or food quality (but to be fair I walked in an hour before closing). If beer is your thing, check out their Mississippi craft beer drafts for $3 M-F from 3-6 (could be longer, but I can remember). They also have great appetizer specials and $4 margaritas during this time. Their complimentary chips and salsa is on point and so are their fabulous cocktails (the Etta James!). The food is great, especially the Tex-Mex options and the cheesecake is a must-eat. One downside, if loud music is not for you, avoid weekend nights because it can get pretty loud in there!

This was my first time ever going to the Iron Horse - they were open previously - but the building kept having major fires. But went with the co-workers after work and had appetizers, buffalo wings, deep fried broccoli, queso dip. I liked everything - they are worthy of 3.5 for being a solid location. The only knock - the menu is small for a business that big - because its a nice size facility. The ambiance is nice and I like the live music on Friday nights. I recommend you come early, because at 6:30pm - it packs in quick. Glad to see downtown Jackson building back up.

We went to Iron Horse for Mother's Day. They had omelettes and waffles on a bar. Also, mimosas and Bloody Mary's all you can drink. The drinks were the highlight... But the food was good, too!

Pleasantly surprised! Upon entering this historic building the first thing you'll notice is that someone dumped a lot of capital into this project. Creative use of reclaimed wood, brick, concrete, metal, glass, lighting and art. Very tastefully done! I opted for a place at the bar for my mid-week lunch. The service was spot-on. Relaxed, but professional. The menu is printed in old-school newspaper format, and offered an interesting assortment of southwest, mesquite offerings. After inquiring about the enchiladas and Mexican lasagna, I decided on the chipotle shrimp fajitas, which seemed like a nice fit with the complimentary chips (baked & seasoned) & fresh salsa. The shrimp were blackened and served with manga salsa. Very tasty! The Iron Horse Grill is a great addition to the downtown Jackson restaurant scene. I'm anxious to go back for dinner and the chance to choose a beer from their refreshing lineup and maybe catch some live music on the corner stage. For visitors thinking of walking over from a downtown hotel, I wouldn't recommend it. It's a short walk, but one that requires crossing under the railroad tracks, which felt unsafe, even in the middle of the day. I sure wouldn't do it alone after dark!

The first thing you'll note about this place is that it draws a crowd. Both times I've gone there was a band and a significant wait time (greater than 20 minutes). While the parking lot is large, the crowd is slightly larger and the feel of the place makes it obvious why. The warehouse feel of this place is charming and inviting and a glass window into the kitchen displaying hanging meats and a butchering station made me hungry and excited about the meal to come. Both times I was seated in a different part of the restaurant and experienced different but equally enjoyable atmospheres. The bands both nights were enjoyable, but amounted to more background music and conversation pieces more so than an actual attraction. The food was good but not memorable. I enjoyed everything, but nothing was the 'I gotta have that again' spectacular that would make me come back just to have it again. Still it's a fun place and we'll worth the wait to get in. If you are visiting and staying downtown, this is the place I would go. Especially on a night where there is a band (Friday and Saturday).

This place is fantastic. Great food. Cold beer. And live music! The tamales are authentic. I had the shrimp and grits. Made me miss the southern hospitality from college. Best part was the live music. The night I was there it was Mississippi blues. Really great way to end the night.

  • Paul N.

This place has barely been open a week. They do seem to have a few details to work out. The chips were stale, and my key lime pie was more like pudding than pie. The atmosphere and service was great. My main course (crab cakes) were good, not great. This restored old smokehouse is a great back drop for a restaurant. Over all I think this place should be a great place to eat once they get all of the details worked out.

  • Chrissie L.

We loved this place! Both my husband and I felt it was under-rated on Yelp. There's a great live music; a vibrant and polished ambiance; and very good, intuitive service. When we sat down and were mulling over what to order, our waiter asked us where we were from. Learning we were from the northeast, he pointed to something on the menu (Shrimp and Grits) and said,' You'll want to try that. It's Mississippi on a plate.' Without another word, my husband closed the menu and said, 'Great! I will get that.' Excellent recommendation - It was very, very good (I snuck a bite). Same thing with dessert - Our waiter recommended a brownie with ice cream and bacon. My husband ordered it and was very pleased. I stuck with vegetarian pasta as I was in town for a run (carbo loading), but it was delicious -same with the biscuits!

Love it. The stuffed catfish is the best. Great draft selection. Still have the best chips and salsa in Mississippi. So glad they rebuilt.

I love having dinner at the IHG. It's a really unique place In Jackson and they have an excellent selection of food and beverages. The stuffed catfish is wonderful! The service is great too. If you do not enjoy live music, go on a night when the there isn't a band playing.

  • Matthew H.

U must have the stuffed catfish it is a true Mississippi delta delight of a dish!!!!!! I wish the he'd would zest the fish but get this dish taste it then drown it with lemon juice and prepare to go slap ua for not feeding you this your whole life!!!!! Entertainment, views and the blend of contemporary design in the space with a backwoods hipster vibe this is a delight for tourist!!!!! The band was awesome!!!!! The sever had great personality, honest opinions and was on time with every aspect of Great great restaurant wish I could give you 10s on everything

The decor, remodel, and atmosphere is a great representation of the historic importance of the venue. If only the food matched the ambiance. There is a mixture of southern and also some Mexican dishes. The fried broccoli is very good, with great crunch and a well flavored queso that goes with the chips. The guacamole has 3 different kinds; regular, hot sauce and with pineapple. The combination go really sell together. The chips were a little stale and although has red seasoning on them, needed more salt. The shrimp and grits left more to be desired. The grits had a risotto texture and had an interesting hue I haven't seen from grits before and presentation looked like someone just lumped the grits with shrimp.

  • Rich R.

Not sure why this isn't a consistent 4 star. The Beef Tenderloin Fajita was excellent and not your typical chewy beef found in most restaurants- very tender and tasty. The place has a warehouse feel which is a cool vibe. Nice draft list as we'll.

    (4)
  • Dazy B.

First of all, I'm only giving it one star because I have to. Second, the food was absolutely horrible and I would never ever eat there again. It was completely awful and for nasty food, it was expensive. I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

  • Kevin A.

Eclectic menu of hearty southern food mixed with Tex Mex. Stuffed catfish, shrimp and grits, baby back ribs or enchiladas, burgers, etc. Great service, not a quiet place. Great live music, check the schedule.

This place, food, beer selection, and service has been phenomenal all 4 of my visits. It's now my favorite in Jackson.

    (5)
  • Glenn M.

First off it is VERY VERY LOUD!!! The chips they brought to the table were stale. I had chicken enchiladas and it tasted frozen. It was not good at all. My friends had fries with their meal and they were more cold than warm. Also one at the table had cheese grits..they were more cold than warm. Their was a table close to ours that another waiter was slipping through. I asked him not to come through there and he have me big time attitude. I WILL NOT BE BACK! I suggest you skip this place.

  • Michael S.

The food was great, waiter was exceptionally nice and helpful even the band was playing music at an appropriate volume for the croud. Security was provided by the sherrifs office in parking lot and the wait was only 15 minutes on a Saturday night which I felt was good. Overall experience was very satisfying and I am willing to return

  • Christopher S.

It's good, but remember it just opened in Nov 2013. Give them a shot, they are working on the food! I had the roast beef PO-boy. It was amazing. Juicy and great - it was delicious. The manager came by to see what we liked and didn't, and the service was great (Tanyer aka Tonya) I saw the fajitas and the pork carnitas come out - both looked awesome. Don't be shy, give them a try!

    (3)
  • Aaron Ray A.

Very disappointing. The menu needs a complete overhaul.....chips were too salty to eat. The ambiance was loud and cold. Even though the prices are reasonable and service was good, there are too many good choices to eat here.

What a unique and inviting restaurant! I was taken away by the hospitality of the staff and overall layout and design of the place. I love the fact that they have utilized a historic building in Jackson and revamped it to such a stunning and wonderfully run restaurant. Do yourself a favor and have a look around and if one of the managers is available, Andy and Justin are top notch, maybe they can give you a quick tour or some background info on this historic site. They have a great local and craft beer selection, good cocktail menu along with some awesome food selections that are creative and unique as well as traditional to the area. This place is a must visit when in the area. My friends and I will be back to visit again, soon.

I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. The service was outstanding. Make sure you ask to be seated in Amber's area.

    (4)
  • Alonzo J.

I will not be returning ever again. The service was horrible and the food was so-so. I ordered the crab cake that had little to no crab. The chips were over seasoned and stale. My wife ordered the pork chop that had a funny odor. I can say the building looked nice. That's the only good thing I can say about the iron horse.

  • Dawn O.

I loved the atmosphere. Anywhere with live music usually is my go to anyway. Met up with some friends here last night & sampled several different things. They enjoyed their dishes. The server/bartender was superb! Great service. I'll have to return to try some of the other menu items. I had a shot (which was large, but watered down) & the fried broccoli... no flavor. They need some tips from the Country Kitchen owner in Tougaloo. Even if it was beer battered there's no excuse. The music made us quite sleepy bc it was repetitive & boring. Every song was so similar. I never settle for one visit though. It could've been a sketchy night. Will be back again hoping to dispell my previous impression...

  • Julie K.

Went with a group. Music was loud, hard to talk at table. With that being said. Really enjoyed the band. Food was awesome. Had the stuffed catfish. Sampled the chicken and black bean quesadilla. Also very good. Friends at table had the tamales, burgers, shrimp salad and chicken fajitas. All was good. One of the burgers a little too pink in the middle. The drinks were awesome!!!! Service was real good. The bread pudding was awful. Tasted like a sponge cake with marshmallow creme on top. Our waitress took it off the bill without any problems. Everyone one enjoyed themselves and were talking about when to come back. Positive experience

Had an early dinner on Saturday night. What a very nice surprise. After seeing the mixed reviews and talking to friends I was slightly nervous. The actual results however were very good. The environment is both casual as well as a little fancy. The food was good. At our table we had drinks, burgers, fajitas, and quesadillas and all were good. It looks like some of the early flaws might have been worked out and the Iron Horse is once again a Jackson destination.

Last night at office dinner party, Service was terrible: 1. did not provide adequate silverware or serving spoons 2. did not remove dirty plates 3. we had to shout for spoons to eat desert, which was set down along side of smelly, greasy entre dishes. 4. No coffee was offered. Food was a mix: 1. Excellent chicken, salsa, guacamole; 2. Catfish horrid and greasy, literally floating in grease, mushy and overdone; 3. Grits gummy and bland; 4. Better than average Key Lime Pie and Cheesecake Atmosphere: band was too loud for brick walled acoustics, we had to shout to be heard even by person seated adjacent to us. Conclusion? Up front when ordering, ask for plenty of silverware, demand that dirty dishes be taken away promptly and ask that coffee be offered afterwards, with desert. Order grilled chicken based entree, get salsa and guacamole to enjoy with it.

I'm a single guy so I sat at an empty bar during what should have been their lunchtime rush. Was given a newspaper thingy that serves as their menu. I had to do a double-take at first and make sure. I asked about local craft beer and the bartender seemed a little clueless. Talked to a manger who seemed eager to remind me that he was tired and overworked--he sorta looked that way too. Poor guy : ( Anyways they brought out cold chips that had some sort of Cajun spices dumped all over the top layer. The salsa was tasteless. My bartender disappeared....remember it's not busy at all and I'm the only person at the bar. Bartender returned. I order a bacon cheeseburger. It came out very fast. Cold french fries with more Cajun spices dumped on them. Burger was actually pretty good. Bartender asked if I wanted another beer. I said sure. Cold beer, cold chips, cold fries, good burger and mediocre service. I think all of the effort went into the design and aesthetics of the building. I hope they spend a little more time working out the kinks. This place looks like and awesome venue for music. There happens to be a local brewery opening up next to them and they would be crazy not to link up at some point for a joint venture. I want this place to work and will try again to get them a 5 star review.

Went for lunch on Wednesday. I had the chicken enchaladas and my friend had the steak fajitas. The food was just O.K. but too expensive for what you got. The atmosphere is nice and service was good.

Great atmosphere. Extremely slow service. Mediocre food. Too pricey. TERRIBLE drinks (and way overpriced) took 2 hours on a slow night and we didn't eat slowly.

  • Wanda L.

It's a shame to have such a wonderful building filled with smoke from the kitchen and mediocre food. I can't figure out how there could be that much smoke in the building and the burger could be that flavorless. (It could be that it was grossly overcook - charred even.) Add a cold stale bun, pedestrian fries, marginal service and its adds up to a waste. I really hope they get better.

I remember the old Iron Horse Grill so I was extremely excited to go again for lunch last week. The menu has completely changed, but for the worse. I had the fried chicken fajitas, and had it not been for the jalapenos and picked onions, my meal would have had absolutely no taste. My husband had tamales, and that was all he got - pencil thin tamales with three sauces that the waitress brought spilled all over the plate. I had water, and he had tea, and our bill with tip was almost $35. Jackson will not pay these prices for mediocre food, so I'm afraid they will not make it.

  • Elizabeth B.

Really liked the atmosphere. Came for live music, and it was crowded. But we got two good seats in the bar area. The music was great. The cocktails were very very strong, one perhaps a little too strong, but the gin/champagne cocktail was good. The queso was good--could use a bit more spice, but still enjoyed it. The chicken and black bean enchilada has potential, but the tortilla wasn't cooked at all so it was very "doughy." I would go back again.
