I sometimes chuckle at local non-Hispanics (of which I am one) who declare Mexican restaurants to be "authentic". How would we know, really? But if you find one that is frequented by mostly Hispanics, and find items on the menu that you don't find at any of your favorite burrito houses, then it's probably a good guess. So it is with El Hidalguense, where you can find things on the menu like the pumpkin flower quesadilla. Bottom line is, the food is fantastic. We had the pumpkin flower quesadilla, a very tasty giant tortilla loaded with the pumpkin flower/vegetable mixture. The gordita was both the largest and most delicious I have ever had - chicharron prensado, one of the very few local places you can get it, and it was awesome. And the alambres were the best I've tried yet.The menu has a lot of the usual favorites also, so anybody can enjoy it. But if you are looking for another adventurous and delicious Mexican food option, this is the place. I'm definitely going back to try more of the unique menu. Good margaritas too - bonus.

This restaurant serves a lot of authentic dishes but the flavor is not there, I'm going to have to come back and try something else before I give them more stars.

Beautiful, wonderful and a straight treat that reminded me of my favorite Mexican place in the Western Suburbs of Chicago!!! Their Chicharron was absolutely perfect and I like the heat of their salsa. I am going back for the homemade Quesadilla like my buddy Ramiro used to make in Elgin...can't wait!

We decided to go here today because of the good reviews on Yelp. Unfortunately, I dont want to give even 1 star but Yelp is making me. We went for lunch. I went to the restroom first, husband ordered us drinks and they had just brought the drinks chips/salsa when I got back. Then husband went to the restroom, came back and said *we need to leave, there is a very outgoing cockroach on the wall in the mens restroom. And if they are in the restroom, they are in the kitchen!*. So we promptly left. Does Hidalguense mean bug in Spanish?

I enjoyed the shrimp chimichangas with refried beans on the side and was very pleased with their salsa and service. My waitress and I had to fumble a little through our language barrier as I kept asking for non or no meat menu items and she kept explaining and pointing to beef and chicken items.... then fish.... Sadly, like most places they lack a straight up black bean burrito or black beans at all, thank goodness I like shrimp!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
