Food was fantastic...a must visit if you like good Korean food.

If you can overlook the sloppy presentation, the food is tasty, though a little greasy. The side dishes are good, except for the mac salad. Order the small dinner of kalbi, as the large portion is ridiculously priced, The bean sprouts might be the best side dish!!!

While visiting Kauai we were craving some local barbecue style plate lunches, so after doing a quick search on Yelp, we decided to head back to the Kukui Grove Shopping Center centrally located in Lihue for some Korean food at Kimchee. We had previously dined at other branches of the restaurant on Oahu, which were pretty good, so we figured it would be a decent option for lunch. My husband ordered the Chef's special consisting of Kalbi and Meat Jun, I ordered the Kimchee fried rice for myself and the cold tofu appetizer for my daughter. We were also served bowls of seaweed soup and some kimchee while we waited for our food. As you can see from my pictures, we were given pretty generous portions of food. The cold tofu appetizer was delicious adorned with some vegetables and topped in a tasty sweet sauce. My fried rice was a little disappointing, but I think I was expecting the fried rice to be a little more local-style like the dish from Big City Diner or the fried rice from Side Street Inn (Both on Oahu.) with some char siu, Portuguese sausage, and scrambled egg, topped off with a sunny-side up egg Our family left the restaurant pretty stuffed, but sadly we were unable to take any of our leftovers with us since there were no microwaves available at our hotel. Overall the food was decent and came out pretty quick, so we will probably be back the next time we're visiting Kauai.

I love their Kalbi, it is expensive, so I treat myself every so often and savor every bite. The other favorite is the cold tofu, love the sauce and the added veggies on top of the tofu. It's light and tasty.

Okay so I'm not a fan of the restaurant but to me, they have really good meat jun, don't hate on me :p The restaurant itself has booth seats with a gyu-kaku style table in the middle, but I haven't seen it being used ever. They have the typical Korean BBQ menu and they're reasonably priced. Their portions are pretty awesome. I can finish a mini, but I always share or take home left-overs if I get the regular plate. Each plate comes with rice, bean sprouts, cabbage and macaroni salad. They bring out seaweed soup and kimchee as an appetizer while you wait for your food. I just really love their meat jun, Meat is tender and marinated, perfect amount of egg, and the sauce is bomb! It's my fave meat jun sauce. Haven't found a place on Oahu with the same kind of sauce. I'd give this place more stars but I just don't dig the overall restaurant. The tables are a little sticky and just doesn't feel clean. From what I remember they were always low on staff so it takes awhile to get your water refilled or if you need anything else. That aside, I'd still come back for the meat jun.

Shrimp tempura and kalbi=yum! :) Butterfish is good too but prices have really gone up.

We thought we finally found a place on the island that had real ramen as it was listed on the menu. One of many places we have tried the past two weeks. We are disappointed. The ramen was doctored up packaged instant (boil for 3 minutes type). My spouse tried to enjoy it saying it was like seeing an old friend. I had the dinner special of one cold fried mandoo, Mac with too much mayo, fatty Kalbi beef, almost bookmark thin cold beef katsu and cabbage garnish. Not worth the over 30 bucks including the 5 dollar tip.

Kimchee No. 9 is our "go to" restaurant when we're having dining decision issues. The food is consistent and the service is fast. Not the best meat jun that I've tasted but it comes in a close third. Prices are pretty reasonable for the portions. They have a lunch special for under $10 which consists of BBQ Chicken, beef mandoo, meat jun, vegetables and rice. For under $15 there is a dinner special with BBQ short ribs, meat jun, shrimp tempura (more tempura than shrimp), fried mandoo, veggies and rice. They also have a special for two at $30.95 that boasts Kalbi, BBQ Chicken, Chicken Katsu, Shrimp Tempura and Meat Jun. The portions are really generous on the regular plates but for under $10 you can order small portions which is still pretty filling. Definitely worth a try when you're walking through Kukui Grove Shopping Center in Lihue.

I knew there was a Kimchee I Restaurant. I knew there was a Kimchee II Restaurant. I knew there was a Kimchee III Restaurant. Then I came here to Kimchee 9 Restaurant in Kauai at the Kukui Grove Shopping Center... And I thought...what the hell? There are 8 other Kimchee Restaurants somewhere? I've actually never been to any other Kimchee Restaurant, so I was hoping this would be good since they have so many of them. My fellow Kauai friends had told me that this was a pretty good place, and that they had pretty good Korean food. I decided to try their meat jun plate, since meat jun is probably my favorite plate to have at any simple Korean restaurant. When I received the food, I thought it was average. The texture was average and the flavor was rather just average. The meat wasn't super tender and the egg batter was on the dry-er side. I think if I hadn't been so spoiled because of the awesome meat jun they serve at certain restaurants on Oahu, I would actually kinda really enjoy the meat jun here. The service was decent, and the only thing I thought was a bit weird was that the people working here...aren't Korean! I always thought that Kimchee Restaurant(s) were family-owned restaurants, so...it was a bit shocking that the servers and cashier weren't Korean. Maybe all the chefs are, though! The food here is decently priced for the amount you get, however, the people on Kauai may be missing out on bomb Korean food. Perhaps a Kyung's Seafood II or Million Restaurant II needs to be built there?

You would think that someone working at a restaurant called Kimchee No. 9 would know what Kimchee is, right? Right???? Wrong. The thing is, the cabbage kimchee was very tasty, and I wanted more of it, so when I asked for more kimchee, the waitress looked at me like, what? What's kimchee? I then had to point at my empty dish, and say, this stuff? Cabbage? Waitress finally understands and says ohhhhh, cabbage? Ok lady, the restaurant is called KIMCHEE No. 9. Please learn what kimchee is. We both had the lunch special, which is half hawaiian bbq chicken (2 giant pieces) and a large piece of meat jun, two scoops rice, a fried dumpling, and mac salad. It's enough meat for two meals, so make sure you grab a box along the wall to take your meat home. They take cards, and the tables deceivingly look like they used to be korean bbq. If only they had korean bbq!! But then again, they don't even know what kimchee is, so I doubt any ban chan would exist.

Bad experience, we should have walked out when we saw the dirty tables littering the restaurant. The worst katsu I've ever had, poor service, and...get this...no kimchee.

  • Klarisse N.

Really bad service. They don't even know how to cook there food well done they give you it with blood still coming out. They don't even wash there hands after touching money.

I grew up on Kim Chee 2 in Kaimuki and also enjoy Kim Chee 7 in Aiea. So on our first family trip to Kauai, we just had to stop by at Kim Chee 9 to compare with its Oahu counterparts. I ordered the dinner special which consisted of two pieces of shrimp tempura, meat jun, big bone kalbi, and a mandoo. The mandoo here is not handmade, it's from a package, just so you know. The shrimp tempura was okay. The consistency of the batter was not light enough, but the taste was good. The kalbi was tender and was the best tasting part of the dish. My daughter had the magi katsu. The breading was a little hard, but she enjoyed it. My husband had the meat jun and he said it tasted fine. Gave it three stars because it tasted like we expected, but it was expensive as other reviewers mentioned. The seaweed soup they served in the beginning was super salty and they didn't refill the kimchee and daikon that they put in only one dish instead of separate dishes. The Oahu Kim Chee's always ask if we would like more kim chee. They also include a macaroni salad with the meal, but I didn't enjoy the taste of the macaroni salad. If you enjoy local style Korean food it's a good place to try.

i don't know about the dine in part as we ordered take out - but the valet guys at the marriott told us about this joint in the mall - they weren't kidding, as my fiance would say - the Korean BBQ (short ribs) were the bomb! i thought the fried mandoo was ok and so was the chicken, but just ok. the kalbi ribs were tasty, but they always are. they get 3 stars because when i ordered take out, i always order NO mac (macaroni salad with mayo) and ALL rice - and every respectable lunch plate place did so, no stress... but as my waitress was filling my to go containers - the grumpy cook yelled at her (i understand tagalog and japanese) and basically told her that she had to charge me an extra $4 for all rice. dude, it's just rice. she waved him off and told him she would ring me up, but never did. i tipped her well as i told her i knew what happened, she smiled, and i flipped off the grumpy old a$$ cook.

This place was not very good. The shrimp tempura was just ok, but the meat jun was horrible! It was full of fat........you have to pull the egg batter off and then cut the fat off the meat before eating it. Plainly put, I've had better.

Gotta agree with Alex L....by far one of THE WORST Korean restaurants I've been to. Apparently their bbq chicken is not too bad but if I could grade them on their Fish Jun alone, it would be negative one star. Their meat jhun sauce actually is vinegar-based! HUH?!??! More like lumpia sauce than meat jhun sauce. Their vegetables were bad (and if you can't do basic Korean vegetables like namul, you're doomed!). Service is reprehensible. We were ignored our whole meal and when I waved to a waitress to get her attention, she looked and me and NEVER came over. Then, when I finally called her over, she didn't want to walk to our table to find out what we wanted. She stood at the table she was already at and asked us what we needed. Lazy, unfriendly waitresses alone make this place not worth its weight. Want good Korean food? Go anywhere but here.

Bi Bim Bop was really yummy a pan of rice with a bunch of fixings and egg. I thought I was ordering the one with noodles, now I know that one is Bi Bim Kook Soo.

Don't bother making reservations. Made a reserv. For 630 pm showed up at 630 pm and they fucking give the table away. We tell them and they say "it's really busy because it's friday".....the fuck do you think we made the reservations for....

Huge port0ions, many selctions, shitty wait staff. They are known for their kalbi, bbq chciken, and meat jhun. hte meat jhun sauce is a winner! i never leave without a to go container and extra sauce! and yes, like other yelpers, the seating isn't the best. I'm 4'10 so i can barely reach the table when i sit. But it is kimchee #9, order, eat, and leave full. nothing more then that- forget the experience.

Salty Soup! Ordeedr Mandoo Soup, which was tasty enough if you like the savory flavor of msg. But I was only able to eat the mandoo because the soup was heavily salted. My husband ordered the Beef and Tofu soup, which was also tasty. But again, only the beef and tofu was eaten. Very salty. Ask them to hold the salt! If needed, you can shake some in on your own at the table. After about 10mins after the meal, I totally passed out...classic msg-coma. Had the most intense 20min nap in the car while my husband struggled to drive. It was a great nap tho...

Inexpensive Korean food at the Kukui Grove Shopping Center. Complimentary soup and kimchee arrives prior to ordering. Hair in my meat jun :/ but the server was kind enough to replace my meal...

This place was good. Sort of cheap ambiance, service was on the slow side, not overly friendly but not rude. But the food was good. I had a grilled chicken dish and my step dad had the thinly sliced steak, breaded and fried. I tried it and it was delicious. The chicken was moist and tender, really good. Both came with rice. I would eat here a lot if I lived here.

when i say that i eat here about 3-4 days a week, i'm not lying. i literally eat here that often. the fried mandoo plate is amazing. it's light, it's crispy, its filled with pork and veggies and leaves you feeling nicely satisfied. portion sizes are good, the kimchee pickeled veggies and soup (if you eat inside) are a great addition to an already awesome meal. not a fan of mandoo, try the meat jun, bi bim bop and/or the lunch/dinner special and you'll be glad you did.

Solid Korean food at the mall. Massive portions...even the "small" plates are huge. The kimchee is way too tame, but very tasty. Great value, especially for Kauai where most restaurants overcharge!

  • Joe H.

My friends chose this place primarily for the location (at the mall and easy to access the airport as we were flying out late that night) and it served it's purpose... we weren't hungry after we left. I kept it simple and ordered the meat jun and it was pretty good. I was happy with it. I thought it was a bit on the pricey side... especially since it came with very little on the side. My boss ordered the mixed plate and it looked pretty good too. One of the other guys ordered some soup and it looked a bit crazy and he wasn't too happy with it. Bottom line: the food was decent but didn't quite match what they were charging. Luckily, I wasn't paying.

  • Bryan K.

BBQ pork was good but not great. Overpriced for what you get, and overcooked. Also, it took about 10 minutes longer than I would expect for take-out. Tip: There are actually many better food court options (like an L&L) deeper inside the mall.

    (2)
  • E T.

A little tough to find at the mall, the entrance is around the corner from the food court area, facing the parking lot. Very old interior, looks like it was there before the mall itself. The Bi Bim Bap with chicken hit the spot after a morning of diving with Seasport Divers, but as others have noted, it's a little pricey for Korean BBQ. I guess the rents at the mall are a bit on the high side.

Who would have thought a restaurant called Kimchee #9 in a mall would offer delicious Korean-Hawaiian food?! Was shopping at the Kukui Grove mall and got hungry. Instead of succumbing to the L&L BBQ chain, we thought we'd try this modest sit-down place call Kimchee #9 for lunch. Surprisingly it was pretty busy with a lot of local-looking Hawaiian people. Mixed BBQ Plate (~$10) - 4.25 stars. Came with an ample portion of BBQ beef, chicken, and fried mandoo (fancy word for dumpling). Bit oily but everything tasted great. And came with the standard rice and mac salad. Only minor gripe is that the booths are really old so all the cushions underneath you are well worn. I felt like I was sitting in a big crater left by the buttcheeks of a a 500-lb Hawaiian guy.. Bottom line: Don't dismiss Kimchee #9 for it's name. It did me good.

Ok, this place is not what I expected. I thought it was Korean food- but I got something that was basically grease and noodles. The tables are like a foot away from the non-movable benches, and the cups had that "just-wiped with a dirty-rag" smell. Seems like everyone else ordered something with meat, so its possible that the kalbi isn't so bad, but this was my one bad memory from my Kauai trip.

  • Arkadiy S.

If you are super hungry, its an OK place to eat but if you want / expect to have a nice Korean food, i would probably avoid this place. Here is why: Not so great rice Fried meat (forgot the name) - too much breaded and not much meat. Meat (beef) itself was hard to chew. Soup - more of water than soup Kimchee - one small plate was given, barely anything to eat. Only good thing there was chicken.

  • Norm G.

The food was pretty decent. The young waitress we had was very friendly. I had a combination barbecue chicken and barbecue beef plate. My wife had kook soo, which she said was pretty good. They are not as generous with the little vegetable dishes as they are at Kim Chee II in Honolulu, however. They had them all together in a dish, rather than giving separate dishes for each vegetable. Also, we had to move to another booth because the first one we sat in must have been the one reviewer Jim C mentioned. I fell right into the crater in the seat and almost had to use rock climbing ropes and crampons to get myself out!

I think I liked the rice more than the fish. Others in my party really liked their BBQ options.

    (3)
  • Mary M.

The food here is pretty tasty. They start you off with a little bowl of broth w/ seaweed and some kimchee. I shared the bi bim noodles w/ chicken with my friend. It was plenty to fill us up. I was in the mood for spicy so I asked for hot sauce. They had 2 different kinds of hot sauce but they were both NOT spicy at all. Service was great but the tables had the hot pot thing in the middle so there was barely any leg room.

  • Jasmine D.

I've only eaten here twice since I moved to kauai, & so far I haven't had a bad experience eating here. Last time I had the Chicken Kim Chee fried rice b/c I was really craving for some. Luckily they have it here.

  • Razel M.

Nothing special... we ate here because my parents decided to find the nearest mall area and get some necessities for the weekend. The service was okay. Food was pretty expensive for what we got, and didn't really taste memorable or particularly good. The jun was pretty much all breading and needed a lot of sauce to taste like anything. I'd skip if you have somewhere better to go.

Chicken Katsu, Kalbi ribs (so yummy), BBQ chicken, cold tofu, meat jun, & butter fish. All yummy. Owners are not customer service oriented. Bad service, but the food is really good.

Id give this place a zero star if Yelp allows it. Don't go here, if you had a choice- please go elsewhere! We saw this place when we were shopping at the mall & since it was our first day on Kauai, My Hubby loves the Kim Chee restaurant chain on Oahu. So for dinner, as it was our first night, I let him choose & since he chose this place, he said he will take care of the bill. ( I was so glad he did as I will not be happy if Id pay for food that taste like crap!) The only person that enjoyed the food was my hubby! mayb the kids? I guess they were hungry! My dad who is a vegetarian, couldn't eat anything! I ordered the tofu veggie stir fry- he only ate a bite of it & he could not eat the rice as he said it was too watery! The hubby ended up with the leftovers- he ate it the nexts day at the hotel. Food taste nothing like the Kim Chee here on Oahu. I don't really know if there are any relations. Service was sooo bad! The owner wasn't friendly! She only cared about collecting money! Small portions, prices are very high for this type of food! 4 plates ran us over 65.00! I don't mind the hubby paying for this, if it was for good food! Sorry for the bad reviews but this is my true feeling for this place! Nexts time I vacation on Kauai, I will skip the Korean part til I get home.

We were walking around Kukui Grove mall looking for a bite to eat, when we came across Kimchee No. 9. After looking at the menu we figured what the heck. The inside of this restaurant is dated. You can tell the booths have been here forever, the tables have built in grills for yakiniku style cooking but they do not offer this. The Kimchee they brought us was pretty good, but there was no other banchan which is something we have grown to know and love. That was a -1 star right there. I ordered the meat jun and my wife ordered the regular kalbi. The portions were decent for the price. The one and only person who was working disappeared for like 15mins when it was time for us to pay our bill, maybe it was break time? I'm going to have to look for other Korean food options in Kauai if there are any.
