Cozy, comfortable, clean. Charming and caring staff. Copious breakfast. Love this place because it's off the beaten track, a kind of hotel experience that barely exists anymore. It's the opposite of a Holiday Inn.

When weather stranded us in Fairplay during a short vacation I was pretty bummed at the prospect of having to find a hotel in the small outdated town. The Hand Hotel turned out to be the highlight of the trip! The adorable themed rooms and the excellently friendly staff made our stay great. If you are adventurous at all and want an experience outside of the typical chain-hotel stay, give this a try!

First having lived in Park County for nearly 30 years visiting was wonderful relaxing time. The room was very comfortable, the breakfast had many options of breads and fruit. The staff was very pleasant. There are no TV but they have Wi Fi that is good. Rates are set by number of adults in a room. Parking is on street. We plan to return again, most of guests when we were there for 4 nights were returnees. The hotel as adequate hot and cold water. The staff was attentive yet also very knowledgeable on local history and events.

Nice hotel, themed rooms; even one with a queen and bunk beds for a family (Outlaw Room). Breakfast good, staff good; no ghosts for us though.

Pickings are slim in South Park. For this, The Hand Hotel is okay with me. Pluses: close enough to Breckenridge, it's a way to save money if you're willing to drive over Hoosier Pass. The staff is super friendly. The price is fair, though probably higher-end as far as Fairplay goes. Accommodations are clean and comfortable. The continental breakfast is extensive enough to suite most tastes. There's a great sun room in the back of the dining hall over looking a small lake and distant mountain view. There's also a few handsome and charming resident doggies. I do like historic and old places. However, the Hand Hotel is in need of a little TLC as it's borderline dingy. The main room in the entrance smells a touch musty and the rooms could use a little updating. That's my main gripe. I'd probably go back and use this location as my fallback lodging.

Its a helluva climb up to the Hand Hotel in Fairplay, CO, at 9,896 feet but once you reach the wood plank sidewalks near the entrance you'll know it was definitely worth the effort. I stayed there one night during a bike trip from Albuquerque to Denver and hands down it was the most hospitable place to stay along the route. Authentic, all the essentials - but not over the top. You can really appreciate the Western feel and history of the place. Understanding the appetites of cyclists, there are always munchies in the parlor and there are gorgeous views from every angle. If you find commerce(ie the town that is Breckenridge ~ 20 miles away) unappealing and want to take in the beauty, simplicity, and history of the Rockies, this is the place to hang.

5 stars. Luxury? Not really. Mints on the pillows? Nope. But the experience is 5 stars all the way. Each room is uniquely decorated, and charming as can be. Sure, you can hear the floor squeaking when somebody walks down the hallway nearby, but you're here for the environment, not a plush Hilton. We visited here around Halloween. The staff REALLY deck this place out to the max for the season. And there are plenty of taxidermy goodies to gore up, so it's extra awesome. There was also a writer's group here during our visit, so the group around the community fire at night was quiet, and scribbling away, but the owner of the hotel treated us to beer and some snacks from the writer's special dinner they had going for them. We felt like we were a part of the crew, or at least not a bother. The staff were incredibly friendly, from booking the room, to helping us during our stay. We love it here, and we'll be back.

We reserved two rooms during the winter time. We wanted to save money by staying in FairPlay as opposed to Breck. I would give this hotel 1 star, except we were reimbursed for both of our rooms the full amount. When my family and myself talk about this room, we laugh, because we stayed at such nice place the night before, and then we had this disaster of a night. It wasn't terrible though, we think everything that happened was pretty funny - granted we bought alcohol. So here's the review : We were the only ones that had rooms that night, the rooms he had picked for us were okay, except one of them which had dog shit on the bed (yes i'm serious, a pile right on the bed). We politely declined that room and chose different rooms. The rooms are good, the bed was comfortable, my only complaint about the room itself is that it was really dusty / musty and my allergies were absolutely terrible. When we woke up in the morning we we're cold, the showers had no hot water - the heat went out in the middle of the night. The "homemade" breakfast items were obviously left overs that were cooked who knows how long ago. Because I have a child now, I wouldn't stay at this hotel just for health reasons. And unless you're out of options, I probably won't recommend it to anybody else. Sorry!
