The initial wait for a table as well as general confusion about where we were sitting (they advised us to wait outside and like a half hour later "seated us" at the table we'd been waiting at) could have made for a disastrous breakfasting experience. Many a "we had the worst service" stories kind of start out this way. Fortunately, this story had a happy ending. Brown Burro is obviously THE place in Fairplay to get breakfast so it was very busy. There were three of us heading back to Denver on a Sunday morning from three nights of camping, it was about 10am(ish), and we were starving...to elaborate on the above we were quoted a 15-20 minute wait and told to grab a table outside while we waited for our name to be called. It was a beautiful morning and I usually love dining al fresco, but after nearly 72 hours of being outside with sunburn on top of sunburn on my shoulders, I was kind of over the sun. About 25 minutes later, a server came out and started placing condiment caddies and menus on each table. "Are we going to be seated out here?" I asked? "No, the patio isn't open yet", she replied. Maybe ten minutes later, a guy came out and started calling out names in rapid fire succession and seating people at the empty tables outside. So we stayed put and dined outside (to be fair, it was pretty hot/stuffy inside, so maybe outside wasn't such a bad thing). We had a good idea of what we wanted and were thrilled to see that they had veggie options for their green and red chilis so I order an omelette with mushrooms, tomatoes, pepperjack cheese smothered in veggie green with pancakes on the side. And then we waited. For almost an hour maybe. I was getting worried because we were all super hungry (Rick was threatening to eat sugar packets) and usually when I have confused service/crazy waits something will inevitably be wrong with the dishes. I finally went to the restroom because the law of long food waits states that there's a 90% that your food will come out while you're in the restroom. I came out and sure enough, the boys appeared to be at least a third of the way through their just arrived meals. My breakfast was spot on. They were generous with the salty/delicious green chili, the hashbrowns were perfectly brown and didn't lose crispness until the very end and the pancakes were super fluffy. Man, it hit the spot and any of my previous annoyances quickly dissolved into a puddle of post-camping breakfast bliss. Stinking post-camping breakfast at its finest.

We came here last weekend..during "burro days" unfortunately. We had to wait, the hostesses seemed to struggle with having 4 parties on the waiting list and communicated to one another with a catty tone, super professional. Finally we were seated. We ordered coffee, which later became very obvious that it was decaf, not cool. Our brunette server was very friendly and did her best, but service was slow. This is likely a cultural thing, as I imagine mountain towns are more laid back than the fast paced environment of Denver that I've gotten used to. Everything is about $4 more than you'd see at a restaurant with a similar atmosphere and menu. I had the chili relleno plate (get it!) and my boyfriend had a chimichanga. We also each had a scoop of guac (seemed like premade for $3 for a tiny bit of it). For those items and the coffee, it was $41 before tip. The bathrooms are tiny and very gross, in desperate need of repair and cleaning. We needed to get back home so finally gave up waiting for our check and walked up to the register. Our brunette server sarcastically/nicely said, "oh you want your check?" Yup, our pace is much faster than that of brown burros. Maybe I'll come back if it's not 'burro days' and I'm craving rellenos (they're incredible here) after a hike near Fairplay.

A breakfast well worth the drive from Breckenridge. Delicious, hearty, mountain/country breakfast. Friendly, efficient staff led by George, the owner. The hash browns were delicious and crunchy. Biscuit and gravy were really good, this is according to my daughter. And I trust her review! :) Hot chocolate was exceptional. Fun map with pins showing customers' origins from around the world. The map they had on the wall this morning was from January this year and we noticed that they had many European, Asians and African guests too. That is amazing.

Slowest service ever! I understand and often enjoy the slow-rolling nature of small town folk, but come on! This place could not figure out how to sit 14 people, even after we said they could split us up between tables if necessary. It took at least 30 minutes to get a server to come to our table, another 30 to get drinks (half which were missing/wrong), and another hour to get food. Somehow, people who arrived to the table later than others received their food before those who placed their orders initially. The server brought the whole large coffee thermos to our table which was odd and hilarious. The food was pretty bland overall, and if you order anything other than regular coffee, someone has to trek to the coffee store next door. Interesting experience to say the least.

Slow Slow Slow! Don't know about the food. Been here 45 minute and no food yet. After a 20 minute wait for the table.

This is the place to stop if you're driving back from a weekend at Princeton. The food was good, the service was good. It was hard to find a place that was open in this town on a holiday weekend, so we were pleasantly surprised to find something this good. Will be back!

Sometimes things are so good that you don't have to say much to justify the experience. Great food, service and atmosphere! Literally lacking nothing!

I'll give them a bit as they are not able to keep cooking staff. This is a red flag to any place that cannot keep a cook hired in a overly busy restaurant. We were warned that the wait was long and the kitchen was understaffed, but we hung on. They didnt lie, the sitting wait was 30 mins or so but the food wait was close to 90 minutes. They did offer some bagged chips and awful salsa while we were about ready to pass out. The "food" came; craving Texican, ordered enchiladas as did the wife, mine green chile, hers veg red. Hers had more pork in than min and we were assured it was veg, um yeah, no lunch for you. Mine was just atrocious, maybe those who enjoy the new laws in Colorado or have been dead for several years like that greasy pile of slop, it should not be served to humans. The kids burgers were uneaten and to have tasted weird, we left with still a $40 tab. So save your stomach and eat in Breck when you get there, avoid this dump at all costs.

Our food took an hour, our server never asked if we wanted coffee or water refills, and she messed up our order on both plates.

Stopped on our way from Crestone. Ordered the Mountain Scramble. Others got buffalo burgers, biscuits & gravy, and standard eggs and toast. Lost a star because they will only sub sliced tomatoes for the pancake or toast. My omelette already had tomatoes, thank you very much. Waitresses were mostly polite, food took well over 40 min to arrive. Food is typical diner fare. Green chili is ok.

  • Tiffany K.

I am going to be sad when we return home and lose our new awesome breakfast spot. I feel that on the people with lower star reviews didn't realize where they were. It's a relaxing environment with unbelievably friendly service. The food is above par and you have to try the homemade salsa!!

Reviews seemed good and we were really close so it was an easy choice. Getting there we could already tell it was packed with locals and tourists inside and outside. Looked fairly promising with the amount of business. We went inside to get seated and they said the wait would be about 20 minutes. Fair enough. Well it ended up being only 10 minutes to wait and we were seated at a wooden table with the word Burro across a lacquered table with pennies. Across was a map on the wall with hundreds of push pins where people called home. Very neat. The place itself is extremely small with low ceilings. So if you're over six feet tall you may have to slouch to move around. The menu was relatively large with the specials in a small plastic insert. Our waitress basically abandoned us and we were left sitting there for 15-20 minutes ready to order. They finally got our drinks but we still had to wait longer before they took out orders. People around us were getting helped while we were ignored. Food came out and I had their daily special which was eggs, hash browns, pancakes, bacon and a coffee for 7.75. Pretty good deal but the food was nothing special that you could get anywhere. Not that impressed with this place with the amount of 4-5 stars this place received.

I saw the awards on the wall for "best burger", thought this has to be good... WRONG!!! Had the "Mexican Burger", I'm from texas btw so I know mexican. 1. Flavorless meat, no char, no seasonings. 2. Guacamole from a bag yuk! 3. What is with this flavorless green chili slop everyone uses in Colorado? It is sloppy and flavorless, Mexicans don't eat that crap. 4. Both my burger and my gf's burger came with chips....I'm mean come on, ever heard of a burger and fries? 5. Nasty, soggy canned jalapeños. All for a whopping $9.50... Plus tax and tip. It was obvious they used the cheapest ingredients available, and charged way too much. What a rip off. Whoever awarded them best burger was clearly paid off to do so or it was the only, of two burger joints open at the time. There was nothing that made me want to come back. Don't waist your money. Go further down the road, or go to McDonalds and save a few bucks.

Great breakfast.....good green chili......fantastic owner and staff....slow service, but who cares.......pure Western joint that feels so very homey and inviting. Love it! Sit back, relax and enjoy a total high altitude Colorado laid back meal.

Driving down 285 famished after a day and night of back packing or camping? Then this place is for you. Good food and reasonable priced and good portions. Building is historic and gives you that mountain man feel. The food was fresh and good. My breakfast came with free coffee and I could not get enough of it. The only downside to my meal was seeing the woman next to me get the huevos rancheros it looked awesome and I wished I had ordered it too... I have been here for lunch once and had a bison burger it was real tasty. Just turn off 285 in Fairplay and it is right there.

We have a tradition of stopping at the Brown Burro on our annual ski trip. Everything we've ever had is great. Especially if you get it with the green chili sauce!

    (5)
  • Melissa S.

Good little diner off 285. The burger was very good & cooked perfectly. The green chile should be skipped - it was bland & not spicy. The pancakes are nice & fluffy. Service is excellent & super friendly.

One of the main cute little places that make Fairplay what it is. It's rustic charm, amazingly welcoming and friendly service (I was almost confused why our waitress was so nice), and down-home cookin' make it a comfortable stop for a meal. The menu has a Mexican-twist on classics - one of my favorites being the breakfast quesadilla. It's casual enough for a stop from doing any of the local activities (hiking, skiing, biking, whatever), i.e., you don't have to change out of your outdoor gear.

  • Christina N.

Really friendly locally owned place. Food wasn't as good as I expected. It seemed to be from can/bag, and a bit boring. Best bet would be burrito, I think.

  • Crys A.

I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting an awesome dining experience when passing through Fairplay, Colorado. The Brown Burro was recommended to us by the guy behind the counter at the local gas station. We though heck, what else are we going to do? Surprisingly, the food was very good. My friends, vegetarians, had the chile relleno and said it was super yummy. I had the burger and thought it was delicious. The place itself was interesting and there's a lot of patio seating outside if you're so inclined. The bathrooms are ... funny. I will definitely pop on in here the next time I'm going through Fairplay, and you should, too!

Can you say packed to the gills? Figured it must b the shiznass. Had a chicken sammich and a burrito. Cant go wrong with either. Go feast and dont be scared

Food was great and reasonable $. Patty melt was awesome. Service was excellent. Try to sit outside.

Whoever wrote these stellar reviews didn't have a Mexican lunch there at 2:00 on a Saturday - effing slop which obviously sat out since lunchtime started. They should be ashamed of their hot sauce, salsa, old rice & beans, and salty chips. Why didn't they just say that crap wasn't available; to pick an American menu item instead?

Stopped here on our way home to Colorado Springs and had the buffalo burger, it was excellent. Paid extra for onion rings they were not very good room temperature not much flavor.

Our favorite place in Fairplay for breakfast. The breakfast sandwiches and the breakfast burritos are our favorites. Great, friendly staff always takes care of our needs. Even with a line sometimes, you can get in and out pretty quick if you want. Check out the wall map and make sure you drop a pin in the map for your home town. Can't miss spot for breakfast........I can't comment on lunch or dinner as we have not eaten there during those times. You may want to call ahead and make sure they are open as they close in the off season sometimes.

Fast service and friendly with helpful waitstaff. I came in with a party of six, four of whom ordered the Huevos Rancheros. Everyone spoke positively about the Huevos, though personally I thought they looked rather unappetizing - sort of li...ke a runny, oversized cow patty. Perhaps the cow had been grazing on grass fed by a contaminated Artesian well? At any rate, it just goes to show that you can't judge a book by its cover since everyone agreed that they tasted yummy. Extra points for the homemade salsa, which also garnered spontaneous praise. The battered cod was a different story. "Beaten" or "neglected" would have been better descriptors than "battered." The poor fish pieces were hidden under a catcher's mitt of deep fried breading but the cod (not known for being the most flavorful seafood on Earth to begin with) was pretty bland. And wet. It seemed to be...I don't know...weeping? Leaking? At any rate, it couldn't be salvaged by the cocktail sauce because there wasn't any. And despite what well-meaning friends and family members might tell you, ketchup and jalapeño sauce mixed together is NOT the same thing as cocktail sauce. The tartar sauce came in individual packets, which was good since I hate tartar sauce and I didn't have to feel guilty about not eating it (or at least making it look like I had tried it, which I would have had to do if it had been served naked on the side). The fries were ghostly white, very thin, and disturbingly limp. I felt dirty and ashamed just looking at them, but I believe they have potential. Thicker, more robust cuts and a little longer swim in the deep end of the fryer and those fries wouldn't look so wimpy and get picked on so much. Overall, though, The Brown Burrow was a decent place to eat. Quick, friendly service with good portions and reasonable prices.

Very surprised to find very good bison burgers and tasty Mexican food at the same place in this small town in the middle of nowhere. The service was fast and friendly with a bit of a local history lesson thrown in by our waitress. Certainly not fancy but clean with average prices. If I'm passing through again, I'll definitely be back.

Amazing attention to detail for gluten free choices in a wonderful mountain town! So cozy and a great family that owns it.

    (5)
  • Tony M.

I have been there tons of times and it is better every time! The reason for four starts is they are closed one or two days a week (which we get-they are a mountain business)...

    (4)
  • Daniel B.

Probably the best place to eat in Fairplay. I had the Mexican and it was very good. We had 9 people, and the place was packed. More pricey than it used to be.

We were not sure what we were getting into as we picked this place to eat (my phone was dead and couldn't Yelp.) Looked cool on the outside. As we walked inside we questioned ourselves since it looks a little like a dive and we were starving. We pressed on for our adventure and took a table in the back. The menu is huge which surprised me with this little hole-in-the-wall offering so many diverse things, including Mexican food. I ended up getting the Friday special of fish, while others got "the one" big chicken soft taco and a burger. My fish wasn't anything special. It was typical frozen and then fried, but I wasn't unhappy. I just expected more from a special. The salad was small and served with the fish, not before. There were lots of other things on the menu I should have tried, but hoped that the special was indeed that. The others were happy with their choices and everyone around us seemed to be satisfied. That was the point and grateful to not have had a bad experience. Our waitress was very friendly and kind and sweet.

Always try to stop at the Burro and have a meal when in town. Great service and food is always good.. Can get busy during breakfast or when something is going on in town.

A great place to stop for lunch in Fairplay. They do a damn tasty Patty Melt.

  • Lydia Z.

After visiting the South Park Museum we asked a lady there where the best place to eat was and without hesitation she said this place. It was awesome. The first good sign was it was crowded. We had to wait a few minutes for a table but turned out to be worth it. I tried the Quasedilla and it was very good. My husband tried the Mexican breakfast and he thoroughly enjoyed it. Definitely worth the stop. The service was very good. This is the kind of place that should be on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. BTW, save room for ice cream served next door.

  • Mark M.

Hit the Burro on one of our big breakfast mornings, and were not disappointed. My huevos rancheros met the standard, and omelettes and breakfast burritos also got good reviews at our table. Pancake sides disappeared quickly. Coffee was meh, but good enough. Fun atmosphere, and very friendly and helpful waitstaff. If you want more pretension, head north to Breck -- otherwise, this place works just fine, thank you...

I really like this place. A great scene. Unpretentious and down-to-earth. Waitresses were charming and efficient. Food was really good.

  • Eric S.

What's not to love? The best rellenos in Colorado and great little scene. If you're just blowing through by motorcycle or car, there's the coffee/ice cream shop next door. One of my favorite roadside eateries.

  • Anna M.

Nice place to eat- Coloradan feel and environment. Typical food choices, nothing out of the ordinary (sandwiches, salads, etc) great tasting though. Friendly and fast service. Neat little restaurant

After the ten minute tour of the Park County Jail, I asked my colleague, a deputy Sheriff where to eat. Nothing fancy mind you, and it would be silly to expect something fancy in Fairplay. Just good burgers and the like. Without hesitation, the Brown Burro. It was a nice and relaxing afternoon. In the background one could hear the Petyon Manning Broncos trouncing the Raiders, always an aid to good digestion. Out the windows were autumn views of South Park spectacular. Owner was there, kindly assisting my enfeebled mother-in-law to her seat. Simple fresh items on the menu. Wait staff was attentive. Got the brief review of the history of the restaurant. Nice rustic atmosphere. My wife had the fish and chips. More than she could eat. Rated good. She loved the onion rings. Mother-in-law had BLT. It, along with the fries, disappeared. I had the Mexican hamburger. I prefer green chili on the hot side and this did not quite hit the nail on the head there. But the chili was delicious and the salsa added another dimension to a very good burger. The patty was thick and cooked to perfection. I will make it a point to stop here for lunch when we visit Breckenridge, which is literally just over Hoosier pass. Next time business takes me through South Park, can't wait to try the breakfast menu.

Typical roadside cafe with good food and friendly service ... my top pick in Fairplay for a good lunch...

  • Shon M.

It's rundown and dirty. The food was sub-par, cold, crusty, overpriced and the manager was rude. This was supposed to be one of the best restaurants in Fairplay CO. Save yourself a bad experience and eat in Bailey or Conifer! Terrible I hope the owner sees he's not the only game in town and customers do have a voice! TERRIBLE! Out bill was over $82. we could have gotten comparable food in type and quantity at Taco Bell and have a better experience for maybe $30. Absolutely ridiculous! Whoever wrote the good reviews on Yelp to get us to try this place either have no standards or they are employees....

    (1)
  • Doug O.

This is a great little place with friendly wait staff and solid home cooking. The patty melt was home made and delicious. If you are driving through and hungry definitely stop in. You won't regret it.

  • Dave B.

I stopped in with my friends to catch a little lunch on our way camping. Great little place! My buddy and I both ordered chicken burritos smothered in green chili. Excellent! Nice portion, and tasted great! My friend Cindi had breakfast and she thought it was awesome. Pancakes were great. These are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Couple that with great food, and it's a must when cruising down 285.

  • Bill C.

What an excellent surprise! I was very wary of this restaurant because I prefer "authentic" Mexican food. I was still wary after ordering, but after the food arrived, it was great. The green chili is outstanding. The service as friendly. We stopped back on a Saturday around lunch time, and there was a line out the door.

  • Danette W.

We've eaten at the Burro a number of times and have always left very full! The food is on par for a consistently satisfying meal and the menu has a pretty good variety of choices - a little something for everyone. Particularly enjoy the Mexican pizza and Mexican burger, but beware of the Spanish spuds - it's literally a ton of cheese... tasty, but whoa!! The staff is super friendly and pretty attentive. Interesting to look at the maps of the US and the globe with pins stuck in by vistors - they're cleared at least once a year and they're always pretty full, so you know you're in good company.

  • Perry E.

We all need a hideaway breafast indulgence now and then, eh? This place is a gem - situated on main street in fairplay, it's a great little (very) rustic cabin with the best breakfasts in Summit County. Think large breakfast burritos with outstanding green chili, and the kind of unending cup of joe that just sits right on a cold mountain morning. The decor is dive rustic with tons of charm and down home kind of cozy feel. The staff are friendly and easy going, and the kitchen just has the breakfast and lunch thing down pat. The calorie count should cover you for a day; but if you've used your mountain time wisely (hike, bike...) then you deserve not to be chowing on a friggin salad when you could be gorging on the best damn chicken fried steak in the West... enjoy.

  • Margaret H.

My husband and I were staying at a relative's house just outside of Fairplay on our honeymoon, and so we ate at the Brown Burro several times. The food was excellent, with some variety for vegetarians. The service was strange-- the first time we went there someone else who'd arrived after we did had finished his food before ours even arrived-- but extremely friendly. The owners seemed like sweet people who were very honest with all the customers, and it was a nice mix of regulars and out of towners. Compared to the few other choices, this is the best option for lunch out in Fairplay.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
