We drove into Carbondale this afternoon to see if there was anything to do in the area. We stopped here for lunch about 1pm. It's kind of an odd little place. Service was just a tad slow and the waiter couldn't tell us what came on the special sandwich, but we ordered anyway. It was grilled Mahi Mahi on a house made ciabatta bun with sliced mango. We ordered the quinoa salad as a side. We also got the Santa Fe chicken salad. The sandwich had good flavor. There was no condiment on it though, so despite there being mango slices, lettuce, onion, and tomato on it, it managed to be very dry. The quinoa salad was the same way - dry. It had good flavor but could have used a tad more olive oil and lemon juice. The salad was really good though! The greens were fresh and there was no shortage of toppings. The chicken was grilled very well and the dressing was a perfect compliment! The roll that came with it was piping hot! All in all, this is a solid 3 star. They just need to think through their specials a little better I think.

This place is amazing for brunch, and just amazing to be at in general! Best chorizo omelette ever. Front yard with people just hanging out and being happy. Just a great place in the heart of Carbondale!

Best Breakfast in the RF valley. Loaded bloody is a must here. Lavinia is fantastic server...great attitude, all smiles and quick service. Hubby loves breakfast burrito with pork chili. I love the farmers scramble.

This place is located in a really cool town...where EVERYONE is nice....so either it's the mountain air or that marijuana law has very positive side effects. Hip...cool...welcoming....sit outside.....AND with great food. GREAT. My chicken sausage was ok...i expected something not gray....but the rest was amazing!! Get a latte!! The raspberry jam IS a berry lover's dream....as is their bread. It's on my list when visiting again, and I highly recommend for a good breakfast experience.

In Carbondale a couple of times a year, this is our go to place for breakfast. In a word, YUM! Amber was excellent server, very knowledgable about menu and her suggestions were amazing both mornings. Johnny cakes were great, BYO omelets were super. Bacon was amazing and perfectly cooked.

This was some of the freshest, most well-prepared casual food I think I've ever eaten. Two people in my group went for the special, an absolutely phenomenal asparagus soup, but I opted for an omelette with spinach, mushrooms, tomatoes, and avocado. It was an almost religious experience. Each part of the omelette was so fresh and so perfect that you could taste each individual flavor note on its own as part of, like, a symphony of tastes all coming together at once. I know that sounds really absurd; I don't usually talk about food like that, fyi. The hash browns were similarly wonderful, and even the toast was memorable. Nice reasonable prices and a comfortable atmosphere topped off the experience. We had fun walking around the restaurant looking at the photographs after our meal. This was a really wonderful casual lunch for us and I'd recommend it to anyone in the area.

Amazing breakfast and wonderful service by April. Chorizo breakfast tacos are very good and the loaded Bloody Mary was the best I've ever had. Great place for families with kids and everyone else, for that matter.

  • Heather N.

Average-Not bad but not delicious. Patio is nice & comfy & the kids loved the grassy area to play in while we waited for our food. Bathrooms were disgusting...a mix of "old ground in filth" & new "just that day" uncleanliness. Waitress was very accommodating with our dietary restrictions & the jelly on the table was yummy. The chicken on the chopped mesquite salad was good & the Turkado sandwich was pretty good. Overall, next time we are in Carbondale I would try somewhere different but I would come back here if there weren't any other options.

One of my favorite breakfast places in Carbondale. Their menu is simple, but everything is good. I love that they offer organic eggs and real maple syrup. The Smithy is a real gem.

  • Diane F.

Revisited after many years and still as wonderful as I remember. Food was fantastic and the service was outstanding. Wish there was a place like this back home!

    (5)
  • Phoebe T.

I love some of the staff, but with the seating arrangement and the huge crowd it draws its easy to get a little lost. The service will obviously be slower on the weekends, but even on slower days if you're seated near the kitchen expect it to take even longer. The coffee is wonderful, some of the coffee art done by the staff is amazing, if you're a coffee lover it's worth ordering a latte. The food is good but it's a little pricey. If I had to sum it up in one sentence: smithy is a weekend and special occasion breakfast place, not a regular deal.

  • Jen R.

Excellent food, excellent service by Garrett. A must stop for breakfast on the way back from Aspen to Denver. The farmers omelette was delicious. The huevos was amazing with homemade salsa. Buttermilk pancakes were terrific. Coffee and fresh squeezed grapefruit made the meal complete. Thank you Garrett for a pleasant and fun meal!

  • First P.

I'm not sure what your suppose to order here, because we ordered across the board and it wasn't...that great. Cute and homey feeling which was nice. Breakfast, huevos ranchos was bland and pretty bad. Fish tacos were more like cabbage tacos, their avocado dressing is more like citric acid dressing. The veggie panini was ugly, but tasted alright. The tortilla soup was good. The pumpkin pancakes were pretty good too. Go back there? Neh. Unless I was just going there for coffee or tea.

  • Heather W.

A great choice in the Glenwood/Carbondale area. I absolutely love their rellenos and their salsa - some of the best I've ever had! The wait can be a bit much at time but the food is so worth it. I'm a sucker for good breakfast and Smithy's has it!

We Love the Smithy but such a not-nice experience today" The Smithy's breakfasts -- and Bloody Marys -- are legendary in Carbondale, and for good reason. We come here every weekend, and some weekdays, for the delicious huevos, eggs Benedict, omelettes, and lovely pancakes. The waitstaff is always attentive and kind, with one exception. Today at breakfast with my two very shy and sweet 11 year old daughters, we were given our food by a server (Lora) who wasn't our waitress, and my daughter's plate --which had chicken fingers and fries on it -- was handed to her, very warm and tilted slightly at an angle, so that the fries fell in her lap as she tried to take the warm plate and a chicken filet fell on the ground. Laughter ensued from the server that made it obvious she thought it was funny and was my daughter's fault. My daughter sat there with fries in her lap feeling mortified. All the server needed to say was, "Oh sweetie, that was so my fault, I should have put it down in front of you. Don't worry, i'll get you more fries and another piece of chicken." The server said nothing of the sort. More laughter. I saw the server behind the service station laughing further about it and obviously making it seem like it was all my daughter's fault. Why? My daughter was left to pick the fries up out of her lap and wonder if she'd even get more chicken. (She did, thank goodness). She said to me, "Am I supposed to eat the one that fell on the floor?" I assured her that none of it was her fault. Tears were in her eyes. Just a total total failure -- truly it was just unkindness on the server's part -- and so totally unnecessary. I get that mistakes get made, but to leave a little girl feeling like the whole thing was her fault is just mind-boggling. The Smithy is my daughter's favorite restaurant but she went home just feeling bad today. No thought was given to comp her a cookie or do anything to make up for it.

  • Melody F.

Except for the muffins (which were just OK) The food is absolutely fantastic and the portions are generous. The coffee is strong and plentiful, The water is fresh and set at your table Service was Perfect. And the atmosphere is perfectly hometown and relaxed. But get there early! Everyone in town and around goes there and there is a LOT of reasons why. If they were open for dinner, we would have eaten there for every meal!

    (5)
  • Mark S.

Could be so much better, having little or no competition close by allows this establishment to get by with tasteless mediocre food just like many, if not all the local eateries in the nearby vicinity......

    (2)
  • Jay B.

We got the breakfast burritos to go. Right combination of savory stuff inside plus nice and spicy salsa to go along with it. Service was quick and prices reasonable. There were a lot of people eating here and a shirt wait for tables, so I imagine the food is pretty decent.

I have heard this place was inconsistent, I guess we caught it on an off day. Coffee and Breakfast left both my wife and I underwhelmed. They messed up one of our orders as well, but that can happen anywhere. Staff was pleasant at least!

Great food.....all of it. I think the mushroom-swiss burger is my favorite, but it is so hard to pick a favorite. Wait staff is usually very good, but sometimes too busy. I'll be back

  • Ashley C.

Great breakfast place! We started out waiting for 25 mins but it was ok because they had great free coffee and a great sitting area outside. We enjoyed waiting in the sunny fall morning. We started with a Greyhound and Mimosa, fresh juice in both!! Next I had the Santa Fe Cakes, wow green chilies, cheese and bacon combined in a corn pancake! Awesome with the pure maple syrup upgrade! Sweet and savory! My boyfriend had the Breakfast Tacos and Yucatan Chicken lime soup. Really really good. Especially the soup. Don't forget to try the homemade raspberry preserves!!! All in all great brunch place in cute Carbondale. We will be back!

The quaint downtown Carbondale has a few gems in it, Village Smithy is one of them. Went on a Sunday and Monday morning. Sunday morning is packed, so show up early - they won't seat you until your whole party is there which you will understand seeing how packed they are. I had two dishes - the Chorizo Migas Scramble and the seasonal pancakes which were granola/blueberry with apple chicken sausage. The pancakes were okay but the scramble was SO delicious, especially with their homemade TOTALLY awesome salsa. If you get toast, don't skip on their homemade jam, it's also very very good. The service on one trip was good, the second was kinda poor. I'm not overly picky on these things but it was enough to drop the place a star. If I lived in CO, I would be here all the time for brunch.

  • Dustin C.

Stopped in here for breakfast on my way back home from the mountains. I had the seasonal pancakes, which had peaches inside the pancakes and on top. They were fabulous, and the service was friendly and attentive and made you feel welcome. I definitely recommend this place.

Leaving Aspen and heading back home we found this restaurant via Yelp! Great find. Loved eating fresh peach pancakes on the patio. Fast and friendly service with a quaint down home atmosphere. My pancakes were fantastic

Inconsistent. We have eaten here around 6 times, sometimes we walk away saying how great it was and other times we swear never to return. One item on the menu we love/hate is the santa fe cornmeal pancakes, when they are good they are loaded up with bacon, green chiles, and cheddar cheese. On our last visit they were extremely light on all of these, we split open a pancake and couldn't even find any green chiles, couldn't taste them either. They also nickel and dime you, if you order an egg you are given the option to upgrade to a farm fresh organic egg, if you have an item that has syrup you can upgrade to pure maple syrup, then bring you 1 ounce of maple syrup for 3 pancakes. Go at your own risk, you might get lucky and the A-team might be in the kitchen turning out great food, or you might be unlucky and get the B-team. Service is Meh. Expect an empty coffee cup the majority of your meal. They also included a 20% tip for our party of 4 adults and 3 kids. All wood walls, low ceilings, small spaces, and no soft materials makes this restaurant a very noisy cave. Daily bread in glenwood is good. I have heard good things about Fold in carbondale. Try one of those instead.

Probably the best breakfast in Carbondale. PROS: They have excellent service, and an extensive menu. I particularly like their Smithy 7 and Eggs Benedict. The decor is authentic and interesting. Very cyclist friendly. CONS: Be prepared for a long wait to be seated on the weekends. Unless you like snotty eggs, you must specifically request that the whites be cooked all the way, because the house definition of "Over-Medium" is rather liberal. What kind of huevos rancheros doesn't have beans? Despite my culinary nit-picking, this is my first choice for breakfast in the Valley. Highly recommended.

Happened to find myself in Carbondale one day, cold and hungry. Decided to squat at Village Smithy for a couple of hours and am most glad that I did. Had the Tuscan chicken sandwich which was very good and very filling. A unique place. Earthy, rustic, genuine. Our waitress was tops and the food was out in short order. Would like to go back in warmer months to enjoy the benefit of their outdoor seating.

  • Roya D.

Great food and very sweet staff. The salsa was amazing and I love how they automatically give you cholula hot sauce. My friend loved the bloody Mary's and had two of them. I put only four stars because the plate I ordered was pretty simple: eggs, sausage and hash browns. But I will go back one day and get something more elaborate.

  • Jim M.

We came hungry for breakfast and departed full and satisfied. First of all, the service was friendly despite the hectic Sunday AM crowd. Food was very good, the pumpkin pancakes were delicious. My wife loved the egg/chorizo/chili/cheddar scramble. And the raspberry jam was good enough we bought 2 jars to take with.

I am surprised that this place doesn't have 500 5-star ratings. I had the best banana cream pie of my life and came back to try their blueberry pie the next day. Those were the two best slices of pie I've had since I moved to the United States in 1997. I learned that they are made fresh from scratch every day. The next things I'll try next are their apple pie and their coffee cake. I had a chai latte which was unsweetened. I think they made that one from scratch as well. I also happened to be there for breakfast the next day. Even though I was occupied with my pie the breakfast on the other tables looked amazing. I had a latte which was also excellent. It looks like you can't go wrong there. This place is 3 1/2 hours from Denver but it is quite worth the drive. Their outdoor terrace overlooks the main street in Carbondale. It definitely deserves a 5-star rating from Klaus.

We arrived about 1pm expecting lunch, A women in our party, having never been Here before headed to a empty table and was told, rudely that she will be told when she can sit down. Then we waited and waited and waited after being sat at the same table. We decided on our order and After more waiting were told that they weren't serving lunch today. So we attempted to order a breakfast and we where told that with the first order we tried to place that item was unavailable. Paid for the 2 cokes and left, never to return! We used to like this place, but off our list and we will never again recommend this place to anyone!!

The Village Smithy is my favorite place to eat in Carbondale. Everything they make is quality & they make a lot! All their jams, salsas & dressings are homemade. McHuevos or the French toast are my breakfast staples, for lunch I almost always get the Asian chicken salad. And no matter what meal I'm eating I ALWAYS get a mimosa!! And then another. Fresh squeezed, homemade OJ? Yes, please!

For the small town of Carbondale, it's not a bad place to eat. I really wasn't impressed, but I did go in with very high hopes after reading all the reviews here on Yelp. I was impressed with their service. I was seated very quickly and immediately given a menu and a cup of coffee. I got the McHuevos, and again they took my order very quickly, and it was ready in about 5 minutes. It was pretty good, but not great. I would however go there again.

By a wide margin, one of the best breakfast experiences that I've ever had. An unassuming restaurant with outstanding food, epic coffee and friendly and attentive wait-staff. Not overly crowded or pretentious... but they just make great food. The way it was described to me, the coffee is some sort of unholy Organic "grown in the jungle primeval by the inmates of a Guatemalan insane asylum." (Tx Wiggum) Absolutely incredible, even after jittering through my 5th cup. I had the huevos rancheros, served with corn tortillas, for $8 bucks, and it was the best I've ever had. My buddy had something that he equally loved, but since my face was alternately buried in eggs, coffee and the homemade salsa and jam I couldn't tell you what it was. Something Mexican-y as well; he didn't look up much either.

I came to Colorado do some snowboarding and as a side mission i wanted to get some good food. For some reason i had it set in my head that in Colorado they would have great hearty breakfast. Other places i went to did not live up to this expectation but this place did. I went here 2 days in a row. The first day i got the Biscuits and gravy which was really good and not heavy like it often is. I also got a side of sausage which was great. My aunt got the corn pancakes. I think that's what they were called. They were basically cornbread made into pancakes with blueberry's. Even after i had finished all my food which was a size able amount i still managed to eat half of those pancakes. They were that good. The next day i i ordered the omelet and got it with silver dollar pancakes. Once again it was great. This is the only place i would like to go for breakfast next time i make my way to Colorado. Also coffee was awesome and parking was easy even when it was crowded. Only open until 2 so get there early!

Grown up in this valley my whole life and I can tell you without a doubt that this is the best breakfast throughout the valley. I drive all the way from new castle for breakfast here and it is totally worth it. You have to get something with salsa though like huevos because they make their own salsa.

One of my all time FAVORITE restaurants. Have been eating here for 20 plus years. It is always a great experience! Always packed, service is usually great. Smithy breakfast needs to be brought back! Large portions and great coffee! Expect a wait for a table, but go into Misers across the street while you wait.

The food was amazing and affordable, and the service was awesome. They seemed really uptight about kids and had a rule sheet for kids. They also make you silence your cell phones. But the food is definitely worth it.

Terrible service. Trying to stop in for a quick breakfast to beat traffic down the mountain. Got here at 9am and didn't get our food until 10:25. The biscuits and gravy was pretty lousy and the chili relleno was the size of a small sausage. Also, overheard a couple other tables around us complaining about the service.

interesting place. very friendly staff, food was okay. maybe we went late, the sandwich bread was burned.. I loved the wild mushroom soup tho. I had to add more salt, but I love the texture of the soup and tons of mushrooms inside. it might be just an off day, might be just better for breakfast.

SOOO glad a friend recommended this place when we were in town. Their coffee is fuerte, omelet was great, and the blueberry cornmeal pancakes?? Winning! Not a long wait and just home style enough on the inside. Took all I had not to go back again the next morning.....

This is my go to place for breakfast. It's consistently good with friendly service and a homey environment. I usually get breakfast, but I've ordered off their lunch menu a couple of times and haven't been disappointed. This is one of the few places that hasn't caved in and gotten a TV to entertain the socially retarded.

I had breakfast at Smithy's this morning and it was delish! I enjoyed an omelet with avocado, tomato, mushroom, onion and cheese that had a side of hash browns (perfectly crispy, not too greasy) and whole wheat toast which was great. The homemade raspberry jam on the table was so good I wanted to eat it straight! My husband had an egg dish with green chili that was SO good. Our friends who are locals told us the green chili was to die for and we concur! The coffee at Smithy's wasn't my favorite, but everyone else liked it so maybe my taste buds were just off. Smithy's feels very local and you'll find a lot of dogs tied outside, cruiser bikes parked in front, and strollers parked along the walkway. It's definitely worth the time to stop by Smithy's!

Fabulous neighborhood place, the kind you fantasize about when you want a really, really good breakfast. Obviously, the hundreds of bicyclists who flock here for a carb load would agree. Wonderful coffee (and I am a coffee snob, people!) not to mention some yummy bakery take-alongs. We actually had lunch here on a Sunday, and while I was a good girl and had tortilla soup (yummy) and a salad, my sweetie gave in to the dark side and had one of those potato/egg/meat/cheese concoctions that are so popular with males. The home-made salsa was quite amazing. Next time I'm in the area, the Village Smithy will be a must.

Yes, this is a very popular local's spot with good reason! They do have a large selection of homey "comfort foods". My personal fave here is the kashi...I LOVE their kashi! I am not crazy about their coffee, however, unless ordered in cappuccino form. Their waffles and blintzes are also very yummy. Great in the summer while waiting for a table is their large yard, if, like me, you have kids. Lots of room to run!

While on vacation in Carbondale I went into Village Smithy for brunch and fell in love with it! I had the whole wheat pancakes and they were great. A few days later I went back for an early breakfast with my hubby and had the biscuits & gravy. They were good but not as amazing as the pancakes.

A tradition in Carbondale. Locals, yuppies from Aspen, tourists and sightseers all seem to find this place. The breakfasts servings are huge. Lunch is just the same. It is constantly busy, so be prepared to wait but once you sit down the service is bang on! We've eaten there probably a dozen times and have never had a bad meal. Make an effort to enjoy the "Smitty". It will be worth it.

Worth a drive (or a bike ride) from Aspen/Snowmass to get here for breakfast! Its been around since 1975; I went for the first time this week for breakfast. There was a wait to get an outdoor table - but, the self serve free coffee while sitting in chairs in the front lawn made up for it. I pedaled there the 15 miles from Snowmass and had to make the return trip - so, i kept it light with a "Farmers" omelette with avocada, mushroom & tomato - 10 points! I wanted the Granola or Blueberry corncake pancakes that the table next us was having - but, the extra weight for the ride back 'up valley' might have blown the tires. Next time.

Delicious food, reasonable prices, lovely ambiance, and a great range of breakfast items. The food tasted healthy and fresh. I appreciate their vegan option as well (tofu scramble). They also have yummy baked goods! The rye bread I had with my plate was amazing. We also bought a giant peanut butter cookie for later. Great place for breakfast! Maybe next time we will get to try their lunch menu.

We got the breakfast burritos to go. Right combination of savory stuff inside plus nice and spicy salsa to go along with it. Service was quick and prices reasonable. There were a lot of people eating here and a shirt wait for tables, so I imagine the food is pretty decent.

A great choice in the Glenwood/Carbondale area. I absolutely love their rellenos and their salsa - some of the best I've ever had! The wait can be a bit much at time but the food is so worth it. I'm a sucker for good breakfast and Smithy's has it!

We had been camping for several days ...so maybe that influenced it, but the food was great. Had the chorizo omlet ...I would definitely recommend!

Delicious breakfast. I had my usual bacon and eggs. The applewood smoked bacon was thick and crisp. The homemade raspberry preserves were perfect with my rye toast.

Cold food again. Indifferent management. Not nearly what it used to be. Been a customer for decades but not again.

Grown up in this valley my whole life and I can tell you without a doubt that this is the best breakfast throughout the valley. I drive all the way from new castle for breakfast here and it is totally worth it. You have to get something with salsa though like huevos because they make their own salsa.

Next time.
