Excellent biscuits and gravy. My husband's breakfast skillet was also good. The food was dirt cheap and tasty. 4 stars because they serve the weakest coffee around. Blech! There seemed to be more servers than customers for Sunday breakfast. I watched a kitchen staffer actually pet one of the server's hair (repeatedly, like she was a dog) while they were standing in the doorway behind the register. It was super weird. I hope he washed his hands before returning to work. Ewww.

There aren't many places like this left. Cash only, good food. The good for you French toast is delicious and I hadn't seen it anywhere else.

Good breakfast place. Would be nice if they fixed it up, though.

This location is interesting. The inside looks something of a medieval fortune chamber with various pieces of old and rustic farm equipment that natives were commenting on as "chastity" contraptions for animals. Interesting to say the least. After the shock of the interior which did not match the seemingly plain exterior, I was pleasantly greeted and asked to sit where I please. I was promptly greeted by a busser who provided me coffee and water, with my waitress soon to arrive. I discovered the corned beef hash - one of my favorites - was canned, thus I opted for two eggs over easy with sausage patties and American fries, and substituted a pancake for toast. The food was very quick to greet me, barely giving me time to plan my not-leisurely-enough Sunday, but it was welcome to my grumbling tummy. The sausage was good, eggs were done well, and the potatoes slightly underdone. The hero of the meal was the lone pancake, large and fluffy, with a delicious interior cakeness and a light golden outside. It looked akin to a sunrise on my plate. I finished my meal with small bits left, asking for a to go container for my poor hungover husband at home. I was also given plastic utensils and a to-go cup of coffee at no extra charge. I tipped 50%, bringing my meal total to just slightly above $12, which seems like peanuts compared to big city meals. The server was grateful for her $4 tip, but she deserved it. Overall, if the potatoes were cooked slightly more with a touch of additional seasoning, it would have been a foray into five stars for this breakfast experience.

Two of us were full for $10.16!!!! The food is classic diner style, the waitress was very friendly. From just outside the door of this place you can walk just three blocks along historic downtown Kewanee WI to lake Michigan!

I hit this place up for breakfast on my resent visit to Kewaunee. Eggs, bacon, hash browns, toast, and coffee. Can't really screw this order up too badly. The coffee was watery and tasted like it had been made with old grounds. There was so much butter on my toast it was literally dripping off onto my plate. My friend had to scrape his off with a knife. Between the 2 of us we probably had at least a 1/4 stick of butter. This is no exaggeration. Other than those mishaps, this place was cute. It was like a small town diner with a hint of truck stop diner thrown in to keep it interesting. Seems like a place I would like to read the paper or a book while sipping coffee (hopefully better than what I was served). While sitting at a table by the windows to watch the downtown bustle and be warmed by the sun rays.

We always have breakfast at Kunkel's while staying in Kewaunee. If anything, it is incredibly consistent. We've never had anything but a solid breakfast there. Service is a bit slow, but hey, it's small-town life, not fast food. I always have the meat lovers skillet, and DH has one of the eggs/bacon/toast combos. The pancakes? I dream of them. :)

Down home diner, go here if you want to hear some local fish stories. Food reasonably priced and edible.
