I wish I would have dined at Balch's earlier than I did! What great food! They have an awesome chip and dip appetizer (for free) that the waiter brings to your table. I have had multiple dishes here and have never had a disappointing meal. I usually come for the clams (steamers) by the dozen. They do a great job at cleaning the clams perfectly each time. There is no sand inside the clam nor on the bottom of your dish. Great job! It comes with melted butter or cocktail sauce (at your request). Prices are reasonable and you are presented with plenty of food on your plate. They do have special nights (like Fish & Chips Night)...and there may be others as well. Definitely recommend if you are in the area! I will definitely return!

Don't be scared, it is really good. The décor and outside are a bit deceiving. We had great fried seafood with very friendly and attentive service. Good place for the whole family, while still being able to get a decent drink or two. We sampled the free chips and cheese dip- surprisingly good. The fried clams were great and the fried haddock reminded me so much of Lenten Fridays as a child that I had a nostalgic moment while eating... Portions are generous. Our waitress was very sweet and gave us just enough attention. We will definitely return to Balch's.

A pleasant place for lunch if you are in the mood for fried fish, steamed clams or burgers and fries. For dinner the selections are somewhat limited ; haddock, shrimp, scallops, and calamari although they have some limited steaks and pork chops. At lunch they have a fried grouper sandwhich which is excellent and simple. They also offer broiled versions for all the fish except the calamari. Personally I enjoy the steamed clams although they are a bit pricey compared to other restaurants in the area. One thing that kind of brings it down is they seem to have a fly problem. It would be ok if it were outdoors but having to constantly shoo them away from your meal while inside is not pleasant. The service is usually pretty good and the kitchen is pretty prompt. Bottom line, nice place for a tasty lunch. Not sur I would bother with dinner.

Yesterday, I ordered take-out from this place. I ordered their bangin shrimp to start. It was delicious hot crispy shrimps covered with a perfect amount of some spicy sauce over string beans. For my entrée, I ordered their sautéed soft shell crab, plus their horseradish crusted salmon which were both pretty tasty. I normally eat salmon cooked medium because I hate dry fish. So when ordering salmon to take-out can be a little tricky. I learned a while ago that if I order salmon more on the rare side, it should be perfect by the time I actually eat it. I have to say it was perfectly cooked. They offer a hearty fresh salad, plus two sides. I had pasta with red sauce nothing exciting and their vegetables, cauliflower, carrots and snap peas which I would say...YUCK!! Mushy microwaved over boiled vegetables either way they were terrible. I will try their potato's next time. If you are looking for a seafood fix either fried, broiled or sautéed this is the place to go. Since someone else picked up the food so I can't tell you what the place is like inside but I would order from here again.

Enjoyed our meal at this casual family type spot in Milford. Friendly service. Good deals on the specials. We tried the fried oyster appetizer special - very good! Main entree was the horseradish crusted salmon entree. Very good also!

Good seafood, dining on the back deck is relaxing. It can become a bit pricey if you have 4 people. My husband likes the Fra Diavolo and my daughter likes the calamari. The fried fish and chips are also good. They put out a cheese dip while you wait which is very good.

We stumbled upon Balch's this past w/e while hiking in Milford... and what a good find it was. I read the reviews on yelp before I felt comfortable enough to have seafood in the middle of the poconos... but my fellow "yelpers" were on point! :) The inside decor was a bit dated and had a "diner" feel, but we were not looking for a 5 star dining experience either. There is also a huge deck out back that is perfect to hang out on a cool summer evening sipping a cold beer. The old cliche... "you get what you pay for" did not apply here... you got WAY more for your $$. The quantity of food was MASSIVE at a very reasonable price! In fact, almost all of the patrons walked out with a doggy bag. I would say it was very family friendly. The service was also amazing... quick, courteous, and no hassle! I would definitely go back and tell others about it as well. Check it out !

It looks like a local hangout place. They have very good crab cakes. The waitress was very nice and helpful. Good food at a good price if you're ever in Milford.

Comfortable atmosphere, clean, no frills. They specialize in seafood but have a variety of other "american food" type items on the menu. It's pretty on par with most diner food (good diner food that is) as far as quality goes, but they have some fancier dishes than most diners would, like the softshell crab sandwich and other seafood options. Their french onion soup is pretty good, my favorite is still from a diner in Cape May, NJ, but I was not disappointed with this - it had a different flavor to it than I was used to, but it was good. Their buffalo wings also were very very different from any others I've ever had. I personally didn't like the seasoning - they weren't bad, just very different. Any other place I've ever ordered regular "buffalo wings" I've gotten them in a sauce that is basically butter, Frank's Red Hot (or similar tasting hot sauce) and maybe some garlic salt and pepper...pretty straight forward and consistent from every other place I've ever eaten them. Here, they're kind of a sweet and spicy flavor (not red hot though) with lots and lots of earthy herbs like rosemary and thyme. Aside from the alien wings, everything was good. Our server was very nice and polite and meals are very affordable.

A noisy little dive in Milford with lots of babies crying on a Sunday before a holiday. The signature cheese spread with nachos was awesome and our martini was made just right. Salads were fresh and well prepared. Fresh balsamic and oil in a clean cruet. I had Chicken Parmesan as an entree. It was huge. Everyone gets a doggy bag here because the servings are so large. My husband had fried oysters which he reported to be surprisingly good. The decor was tacky and country, the place was kind of grimy looking, and I'd say the noise of families isn't for everyone, but all and all, this was a good place and we recommend it.

Have passed on the way to other eateries but one day decided to give it a try. When you walk in it is definitely a family run operation I fact all the "nautical" decor looks like every one who works here brought from home. The menu is varied with many salads ,wraps , sandwiches ,burgers and of course seafood items. We choose a shrimp cocktail which comes if 1/4 lb and 1/2 lb option it was served over a bed of mixed greens enough for a salad in fact I asked for some dressing and had a great salad the shrimp were small but fresh and ice cold served with a very good cocktail sauce these were not the pre boiled water logged variety but fresh and plump. For the entree we had a fried grouper sandwich and fried fresh clam strips. The grouper sandwich was a quality filet in a light breading fried perfectly served lettuce, tomato and tarter sauce the bun was a standard hamburger bun and could of been better but the fish was so fresh and done so well it mad e the sandwich a grand slam home run. The clams were also fresh lightly battered and fried to perfection a generous portion was served with a very good cole slaw. They had the right amount of chew and that briny fresh clam taste they were another winner. The total tab with 2 beers an ice tea and all of the above 32.00 a bargain This place is a winner and we won't pass it up again if your looking for fancy and pretentious this is not your place but if high quality food prepared by people who care run don't walk to Balchs.

Drove past this place for years and gave it a try on a recommendation of a friend. NEPA is not exactly a culinary hot spot, so we went with no expectations and were pleasantly surprised. The clam chowder was great and the fried scallops were huge and tender. Great find.

A Rough Gem - Balch's is in brief an incredible bargain. The food is very good the prices very reasonable. The seafood is fresh. The fried items are just right. But they are so much more than fried seafood. Great pasta dishes. Soups kick butt. Friendly service. Good beer selection. I wouldn't mind if they wiped down the ketchup and hot sauce bottles on the table a little more often. The menus are held together with a staple... that's just a little too divey for me. But you're not going here for the atmosphere... you're here for the food. The portions are huge, the food is excellent and the service is spot on.

We went here with a party of 9, which usually throws the local eateries into a frenzy, but not here. All the drinks, appetizers and dinners came at the correct intervals - and everyone was served at the same time so no one was short-plated while others were eating. This was important as three of the diners were children who otherwise could've become fidgety. I was skeptical about going to a restaurant that served fish so far from the shore but this place was right on the mark! The wait-staff was efficient, polite and attentive. Oh, and the food was quite excellent and reasonably priced. The décor was - well, actually the décor wasn't... it was typical Pennsylvania wood paneling with plastic fish and nautical stuff strewn about the ceiling and walls but the place was clean and airy. We'll be back!

Our family 'Go To'! Love!! Even our 6 year old orders off the main menu! Laid back, quiet, homemade food. Crab cakes are amazing! French onion soup is my favorite starter. Don't get all gussied up, chill out! Be comfortable and go eat some good food!

I was skeptical of eating seafood this far away from the coast but my-oh-my, this place was terrific. Very hometown, very friendly, very fresh. Try the lobster bisque and you'll never order chowder again!

Great fried fish. Haddock, shrimp, scallops - all universally good. Light, tasty breading, fried to perfection. Go for the Captain's combo platter. One is plenty for two people. Comes with salad and 2 sides. Delicious sauteed soft-shell crab - $10.95 for the appetizer (no sides). Really good clams - Cajun are in a spicy broth. The shrimp boil is bland so skip it. Very garlicky mashed potatoes. Ordinary dinner salad with bagged carrots and croutons. Inedible bread, unfortunately. Very haphazard service from our obviously new & inexperienced waitperson. NOTHING is vegetarian or vegan friendly. Huge portions. Entrees in the $20s. Also burgers and sandwiches for less. Decor from the early 70's though there's a nice deck out back (not yet open on Memorial Day Weekend). Not a bad choice for a rural area with limited options if you're in the mood for fish fry.

Balch's is a very casual spot to get a great meal, although it has gotten more and more like a real restaurant since its first opening. When it first opened, you would order off a chalkboard at the front counter (there were about 10 items, mostly lobster) and you'd find your own seat. Now, they sit you down, serve you homemade ranch tortilla chips with cheese sauce, and take your order. The menu is almost entirely seafood but there are some chicken, veggie, and potato dishes to satisfy non-seafood lovers. Those chips, by the way, are sooo delicious and they will gladly refill your basket as needed. Most of the food I've had here has been really really good. My family has been coming here since it opened and they're still huge fans. I once got some cold shrimp scampi, but it's forgivable. The waitresses are very nice and friendly, the food is very fresh, and the prices are excellent. They also serve such big portions you'd be hard pressed to eat it all.

Never have had a bad experience here. They have any seafood staple and have some unique dishes too, all at affordable prices. The service has always been excellent. One of my favorite places around Milford.

Decent place for being up in the boondocks. The service was pleasant and efficient. The owner/chef came through the dinning room and checked on everyone's meals - and talked it up with the regulars. We had the horseradish salmon and haddock. Both dishes and appetizers were very good, especially for the reasonable prices.

Balch's! What a find! Awesome little casual eatery here - friendly service, great food and inexpensive beers! That's a winning combo in my book. After a nice fall day of driving down Scenic Route 97 along the Delaware we knew we would end up in the Port Jervis/Miford area. Looking for a place that would make the parents and us happy we went here. We are glad we did! I was surprised about the size of the place and it was much larger than I thought with two dining sections and even an outdoor (a little too cool and looked closed when we went) Everyone ordered something different - My mom ordered the Sauerbrauten off the limited time Oktoberfest menu, Stepdad ordered the Prime Rib (limited days apparently, but we hit the right time!), I got the seafood combo and my wife with her knack of ordering the most expensive things on menus ordered the crab legs. Great selection of sides. Everyone raved about the food, the friendly service and the beer was flowing. We had a great late lunch/early dinner and left completely full and happy! The chef Joe came out and chatted a bit at the end of the meal. My stepdad and he had the same birthday so of course my stepdad had to hug him (Those beers must be kicking in!). All in all a great place to go.

Much better than The Grotto. I ordered linguini with red clam sauce. Dish had over a dozen clams with shell. Real clams. Not from the can. Great service as well.

Purely from an economical standpoint, this seafood joint is a gem. Truly one of the biggest portions I've seen (okay, in comparison to NYC). Dinner for two with a drink and tip is around $60. 4 page menu gives a list of options, Nothing too fancy- generally broiled or fried. They offer gratis, tortilla chips and a cream cheese based dip to start, and a nice fresh salad. Platters came with 2 sides. I split a platter of fried oysters - there were 10-11 and a mixed combination of broiled haddock, scallops and shrimp. Some of the items may have been a tad overcooked but tasted very fresh. Best part was that the beer was $3.50. woo hoo! Service was personable even if casual.

The food here is great! I love the seafood pot pie, one of the best seafood dishes I've had. Their french fries are also great (fried in peanut oil). Also their cheddar horseradish dip they give you with the meal is good as well.

Ok this is really 4 plus stars; however the whole experience was incredible. Service was fast and attentive. The items we ordered were not only delicious the presentation was gorgeous. We ordered the sashimi wonton tacos and bangin shrimp and were very impressed. The decor here isn't much to see but the food was phenomenal! I would come back in a heartbeat! We stopped in at 2:55 and lunch ended at 3 and we were offered the lunch specials. Most places won't do that.

"Rachael, do you like prime rib?" Oddly, that question lead me to Balch's Fish Fry in Milford, PA. Had I known the name, I might have refused and possibly kicked and screamed until I got my way and went to the diner instead, but as luck would have it for me, my Grandma didn't know the name of the place either. My only inkling was a vague, "It's just outside of Milford, and they have great Prime Rib. I bring the leftovers home for the poodle and he loves them too!" When I saw it was a fish place, I was admittedly put off because I hate seafood, but I'm glad I gave it a chance and went inside. The owner used to be a chef at the Best Western, I found out. I loved that outdoor seating is available, but we chose dine inside instead. The dining rooms are decorated with standard nautical fare like nets and crab cages, and I wouldn't have it any other way. The chips and cheese sauce (It seems like cheese and Worcestershire sauce) are amazing, and we were happy to get a refill of that. Since I hate seafood with the burning intensity of a thousand suns, I ordered a half-rack of ribs and my Grandma got the prime rib. Both were fantastic and better than anything you might find in a chain restaurant any day. The sides weren't anything special, but I plan on going back for those ribs. They fell right off the bone and I couldn't even finish the half-rack. All in all, very worth the money, and very worth your support of a local business. Places like these make me glad I'm willing to try privately owned restaurants instead of just sticking with the standard Chili's or Friday's.
