Would give it a 100 stars if I could! Favorite local sushi place to eat at! The owners are so nice and care so much about the customers. It's a small place but they will make room for your party! Highly suggest ordering the Ched Roy (has salmon, mango, and orange on top with shrimp tempura inside)! I ALWAYS order it when I go there!

You can't go wrong here. The sushi is delicious and always fresh. My husband and I sometimes do the lunch specials carry out. Carry out orders are usually ready in 10-15 minutes and they've never messed up our order. You get the best bang for your buck at lunch time. We've also tried the pad Thai--okay, but not the best I've had-- and sesame chicken-- pretty solid. The service Is great, but the food is what will keep you coming back! Great sushi!!! For appetizers, try the crab wontons, calamari and fried eggplant. Yes, all fried, but delectable!!!

This place is relatively small and well kept. The servers are very nice and energetic. It seems that the customer base here is very closely knit as at least one or two groups said "bye" in chinese (the workers are chinese) when they left. Without saying, the food is good enough to keep those customers coming back as well. So my mistake while going to a sushi place with "sushi" in the name is to think that they made their other entrees as good as their sushi... Without saying the sushi itself was good. It wasn't fine dining sushi good, but good enough to satisfy a regular sushi crave. Now onto that mistake... I ordered a shrimp tempura udon... what came out was a chinese styled noodle soup bowl with the shrimp tempura on a separate plate (holy crap!! they actually didn't put it in the soup.. Yay)... but the most important thing is that it came with udon noodles =P... I don't quite know what else to say... the soup base wasn't the typical base of a udon bowl and the noodles tasted like they were just store bought. I give this 3 stars for the sushi, would be two for the udon.. but that was my fault for ordering a non sushi dish at a sushi place...

Yamato had not disappointed since my husband and I decided to give them another try. We typically try a variety of different rolls each time we visit, and this particular time we tried the yellow dragon roll and the Ayman roll. Both were very delicious but I have to say the Ayman definitely takes the cake! I want to say the addition of mango made it all worth it, but it was so delicious!! If your looking to try something different, I recommend those two rolls. One of the unique things about Yamato Sushi is their ginger. It is sweeter than most and very delicious! We typically eat it after we finish our sushi because we know the benefits and wonders ginger does for the body!

Amazing food and great service! Highly recommend!! GO HERE!!!! try the food!!!! Super clean bathrooms!! Fried oreos were so dope and yummy!!! THIS IS THE DANK!!!! Definitely make sure you stop by here if you are in the area. Our server was so amazing and really made our night. Michael Currie ate 20 sushi rolls. He loved every single one of them. Everything was mouth watering. I AM SO SO HAPPY!!! thank you!!!!

This is more of a 4.5 for the excellent sushi! I tried a specialty roll called the Stan roll and salmon nigiri which is one of my faves anywhere. The rolls blew me away with taste, freshness and presentation! I feel as if I inhaled my food. It was that good. At the end of the meal, I was given a beautifully cut half of a delectably juicyorange to cleanse the palette. For $20 I was definitely satisfied and can't wait to put more of that yumminess into my mouth. Oh and this is a BYOB spot so spot in at the liquor spot three doors down on the same side of the shopping center and you'll be happy. There's a free parking lot so that's always a plus and while the prices aren't the lowest I may bump the review up to 5 after a few more trials. Get thee to this sushi! You will not regret it.

The only thing better than the sushi here is the owner Danny. He is so friendly and greets his customers personally. Try the Danielle Salad and the specialty rolls. My favorites are Jason Roll, Tiger Tail and Double Tuna. If you like eel and spicy then try the Danielle Roll. This place is great!

Great food. Good service. It was packed on a Thursday, which is a good sign. Their soups are fantastic.

I always rate a sushi restaurant by the quality of their tuna roll... When it's good it's my favorite, but lots of places don't use good tuna and it tastes fishy... Yamato is the first place I've been to in awhile (especially in this area) where the tuna is good. Shrimp and vegetable tempura was also good and nicely presented. Waitstaff was very friendly. We will definitely be back!

Food: I ordered the S1 ($12.95) which came with: Miso soup: Excellent. It came with lots of tofu. I like tofu. 6 spicy tuna rolls: Not that spicy. 6 salmon rolls: Pretty basic rice and salmon. It's hard to screw up. 6 California rolls: Tasty. The dinner was filling and the price was good compared to Minato or Geisha. Then again, I did eat a bowl of cereal before dinner due to the fact that sushi never really fills me up. That's why I go to buffets. For $12.95, I consider it a pretty good value sushi that wasn't regrettable. Decor: This is a little place that clean decor. I like places that don't have distracting lights or loud music. Food tastes better when there isn't crappy music playing. Serious. Look it up. There website is pretty well made. It needs more pictures of their food though. Service: The Chinese staff was really nice. They seemed overstaffed for a Sunday night and had nothing to do. It was a little awkward when my waiter stood in front of our table for a really long time starring into space. My water was filled before it would even reach half way. Would I come here again? Yes. They need a lunch buffet.

Lunch specials are fantastic. (If looking on the menu -- back page). Comes with soup and sushi -- very good prices. Rolled well, everything is very fresh. Staff attentive and nice! For a healthy option, ask for brown rice. It's only $1 more!

A restaurant in a shopping center, typical... The food and their service, untypical... Came in when it was crazy packed. Extensive sushi menu with some names I never seen before. Jason roll? Katie roll? Josh roll? They were generous enough to give us a sample of the Jason roll. Great texture and flavor. Me and my sister ordered the Tokyo roll, Squash roll, Philly roll, and a roll that was not in the menu, dont remember the actual name, it was something like Flaming Dragon roll? Or Fire roll? It was a roll (Very delicious) that was on fire, literally! I assure you there were no traces of gasoline when I ate it, so no need to worry! They are generous when it came to the sushi. Huge pieces of fish with just enough rice to compliment it. Very fresh. Even though the place was full, including a few couples waiting outside, the service was exceptional. Every time my sister drank her water and put it down, seconds later it would be refilled. They would come by at the right times asking us if we needed anything else, refilling water, taking our orders, making sure we're ok, I felt like we were special! Then we were surprised to see a certain dessert in the menu of a Japanese Sushi Restaurant! Fried oreos? WHAT! I had fried oreos at the Renaissance Festival and they were ok. Too much batter, too chocolatey, needed milk. Fried twinkies were great though hehe.. I was skeptical when my sister ordered them with ice cream on the side. Japanese Sushi Restaurant serving a... American?? Food item?? Dont even know what to call that... But I wasnt sure... 3 minutes later it came. Put some cream and ice cream on it, took a bite, and my god were they spectacular! I was full before the oreos came but I had to eat it! Not too much batter, crispy on the outside, moist and tender in the inside. Cool with the ice cream, and hot with the oreo together, chocolate and the milky, crispy and the tenderness, makes it a perfect combination. Fantastic. Couldnt believe it... Overall this place was a Woo Hoo for me. As good as it gets!

I really like this place and keep coming back for more. Out of 20 visits, I think they've had one off night so far. I'm not a sushi snob or purist, so I like the fancy rolls with lots of stuff on them. Fish is always extremely fresh and my two favorites are the hula roll and sweetheart roll; can never seem to go wrong with them. Just about everything I have tried has been well prepared, fresh, and tasty. I know people say there is better in the area, but I've tried them and no-one even comes close. Staff is extremely friendly and always goes out of their way; they even prepare something special for my 4 year old who is not a sushi eater. I don't know about the person who said they were transported to ancient Japan, that may be a stretch, but it is clean, and lightly decorated. Who know you could get good sushi in Timonium, and at a strip mall, right? Go, and you'll keep coming back for more.

Yamato Sushi is one of our favorite places to frequent. The staff is friendly and helpful, and always willing to make suggestions. The chef's are always willing to make special orders, an they do not just craft delicious sushi, but art. They have a long list of creatives specialty rolls, not only created by staff but customers. This restaurant has a homey, welcoming feel and I would recommend it to anyone. The price are definitely fair. It costs about 12$ per roll but they are very large and filling.

  • Lauren S.

Pretty good, but not the best in the area. I usually play it safe in sushi places I don't know, so the California, Spicy Tuna, and Cucumber Rolls won't kill you. The other food is pretty decent, but nothing to write home about.

I was surprised this little sushi place could compete with any of the best sushi places I have ever been to and I have been to some top-level 5-star places over the years. Everything tasted fresh and the textures were as complex as the flavors. Well done!

I am always a little apprehensive about the strip mall joints, but walking in, my mind was immediately set at ease. Because I saw a big ole table of Japanese businessman (and one gaikokujin) eating dinner. ALWAYS a good sign. The restaurant is cozy, clean and decorated very well - does not give off that dingy vibe that some Asian restaurants seem to have. The wait staff are SO friendly and helpful...my Caucasian friend and I both decided to order the spicy seafood udon, and I think the owner/chef and the rest of the staff were very concerned about how we would handle the spiciness (not a problem for me, but she struggled). The broth was delicious and filling - came in the customary huge vat of a bowl. We actually just tried the spicy tuna roll, as none of us were in the mood for sushi, and that too was fresh with good seaweed and the right amount of rice. And love the fresh orange slices with the bill - not enough places do that any more. I doubt that I will ever eat here again, but it was an enjoyable experience and I recommend the restaurant highly.

WOW!! Went here for dinner and it was FANTASTIC!!! The food was served beautifully and quickly. AND it was delicious!!! At 7pm on a Sunday night, the place was full!! I noticed as people walked in, our waiter (an owner perhaps?) would greet regulars with a great smile and an occasional hug! I know I will be a regular now!!! Thanks Yamato for a great birthday dinner! See you again soon!! P.S.- I have been a bartender for 20 yrs and we all know how picky we can be about restaurants!!!

I have been coming here for years, by far the best sushi around. The waiters are very attentive & friendly, the prices are fair for the amount & quality of the food. There are many options for those who do not eat sushi as well !

We were served at 3:30 in the afternoon. Most places close after lunch. The sushi was good. My favorite is Saba and it was just ok. Try the crunchy spicy salmon roll. Expect to spend $30-$40 without booz.

The strip mall location does not do much for the ambiance, but you forget it once you are inside. This is some of the best sushi in Baltimore. Try a Danielle Salad for a great appetizer and then hit up the fish. The specialty rolls are definitely the stars here. They are imaginative and fun - very tasty and well displayed. But you also can't go wrong with the sushi - the hamachi nigiri is always fresh with a little sweetness. Yum! Sit at the sushi bar and the owner will come over for a chat - what a nice guy! Also, it is BYOB and if you bring white wine they immediately come over with a thermal sleeve. The convenient location, great sushi, nice interior and friendly staff will make you forget, at least temporarily, that you aren't at some downtown joint!!

One of the best Sushi places in the area ! Yamoto is a more traditional Sushi house that has great food and great service. Love the shrimp tempura roll ! Speaking to the service, the owner is a super nice guy who goes out of his way to please his customers. All around nice experience every time I have eaten here.

I dunno what all the hype is about, I just had a very mediocre lunch with terrible service and rude staff with staring problems. The sushi chef keeps leering at me in a disgusting lecherous way

Ok, Sushi is the one thing I actually travel for. I've gone as far as Atlanta just to eat at Ru San's, which was a little disappointing after all the reviews. So what do I have within walking distance? You guessed it....Yamato Sushi. After all the Sushi I've eaten, Yamato is by far the very best. I've never had fish as fresh as Yamato's and the wait staff can't do enough for you. They are VERY accomodating. And I don't know why it says it's not good for children. I have three and they absolutely love Yamato sushi. And the wait staff is great with them. They'll actually stop to entertain the children. It is a bit pricey but if you're a Sushi fan, you know you're going to get what you pay for. And I don't think they charge enough. The atmosphere when you enter the restaurant makes you forget the location. It's like stepping through a portal into another time zone.....the time zone Japan is in. Everything from miso soup to fried calamari to any sushi you can think of...everything prepared/cooked flawlessly and presented as an art. Bravo Yamato...not only my favorite sushi, but my favorite restaurant of all.

Yamato is a great sushi place. Went there with friends, but didn't expect much since it's in a strip mall. Loved it! Nice space, great looks and friendly staff. Good rolls, quick service and a lot of fun to people watch. Second to Edo downtown only, my very favorite in Baltimore.

Had lunch there last week, can honestly say I have had better. Their dynamite roll was baked with way too much mayo. We ordered a variety of rolls, 6 in total. Each was lacking in taste, this place can have so much potential.

I can not speak highly enough about Yamato. They are the only place we go for sushi. We have been eating there since they opened. When we walk in the door we get hugs from the owners. They will treat us like royality. Spoiling us with authentic Japanese food that is not even on the menu. Just telling us "Oh try this I know you ill like it, my wife just made some in the back." Bringing us special wasabi . Never charging us a cent just loving the fact that we are there loving their food. My daughters like stuff not on the menu and they always accomodate anything and everyhting we ask!! My kids can leave food on the floor and spill a drink and they are right there to make our family night out relaxing and delicious!! We love love Yamato!!

(10/29/2010) Decent "Asian" place in the County. They serve a weird mix of Chinese, Japanese, Thai dishes, kind of like a mix-tape or highlights reel of Asian food (I think the owners are Chinese). The Pork Tonkatsu was several (3-4) panko-breaded, deep-fried, thin-cut, pork tenderloin slices with your standard Bulldog tonkatsu sauce and a side of white rice and steamed broccoli; not exactly exciting, but just what my non-adventurous SIL was looking for. The MIL had a shrimp and vegetable tempura; light, puffy, but kind of chewy (maybe presence of cornstarch in the batter) coating on tender vegetables. Sometimes they have some very special specials, would recommend trying the takoyaki (fried octopus balls, as in diced octopus in a batter like an ocotpus hush puppy); crispy, chewy, seafood-y (flavored with a little laver, dried bonito flakes, scallions); was even served in that special takoyaki pan. Special maki are creative, entree portions are reasonably sized, friendly (family-like) service, beautiful plates. Stop in after you buy your dog food and crampons at the strip mall stores next door.

This is a great sushi restaurant. The staff is awesome and friendly and always give provide a chorus of Hello's and Goodbye's as you walk in and out of the restaurant. The prices are good and the sushi is fresh and fun.

After years of ordering delicious rolls from the sushi/maki menu, my husband and I recently discovered the lunch specials menu. I believe it was around $8 for two rolls and a miso soup....can't beat that! I will say that this is a good lunch place and also good for a casual dinner. It's in a strip mall so it's really not a first date type of restaurant. Regarding what someone else said about the servers, there is one particular server that can be a bit intimidating but all of the others are just fine. Other observations....the owner is super friendly and it's BYOB with a liquor store about 3 stores down. Love it!!

I have been going to Yamato for at least 5 years and have loved it every time. The sushi is always fresh and tasty. Always prime cuts of fish. They can have a carry out order ready in 15 minutes, kids are not only welcome but treated like kings, it's byob and they'll heat up your saki for you. Comfortable ambiance, attentive service, don't waste your time anywhere else.

This place was pretty great for dine in, and I am very curious as to how take out will be, as that's what I normally do. I've surprisingly never been here before, and I live right down the street. The roll menu was very creative, and full of different options. I had the tiger tale roll(awesome) and one of the sushi special rolls. Both were awesome. The only complaint would be that they were out of ONE of their entree specials, which is always disappointing when you go to order, and they dont have it. Staff was very friendly, and the rolls came out super fast. I would totally come back again, and I will.

I was very happy with the quality of the sushi and the staff were knowledgable about gluten free options and had gluten free soy sauce available. I didn't give 5 stars because one roll fell apart when trying to eat it. It was very tasty though and I would go back when in the area.

This is my goto sushi joint, for dine-in or take-out. I have tried just about every sushi restaurant within 20 miles. Yamato wins every time. Nigiri and Maki are phenomenal, and they have the best Miso soup around. You can't go wrong with any roll. Fantastic service and always fresh. Note: Yamato is BYOB, however there is a liquor store two doors down in the strip but the liquor store is closed if you decide to try Yamato on Sunday.

I'm from Boston, where there are half a dozen sushi options in every neighborhood. Since I moved to Baltimore, I have tried most of the sushi places in the county area. Yamato simply has the best, tastiest options out there. Order a combination platter for a great value. The service is really excellent too. The staff is friendly and ultra-attentive. Your water glass will never be empty! I always have a nice time when I go to Yamato.

Best sushi experience of my life, I shit you not. Clean & well lit, lightning fast service, delicious rolls, fat sashimi, and bring your own wine? Get the fuck out of here! Couldn't understand my server but who gives a shit, point and smile and it'll comes right out. Fortune cookie and orange slices with the check... my ninjas!

Wow, and that is coming from something of a sushi connoisseur. I stopped by here on the recommendation of Yelp and have to say this is definitely a worthwhile stop. It looks like your typical hole-in-the-wall sushi joint, but the food and service make it stand out. Let's start with the service, which was top notch the moment we came in. One of the staff (a manager, perhaps?) saw us with a toddler and a baby and went above and beyond helping us settle in. Our toddler was a bit cranky and wandered off; the staff distracted him with a cookie while leading him back to the table. He made sure we had everything we needed, including a non-glass cup of water for the little one. Even our server, a young woman, was attentive to our needs and brought out a training device for our toddler's chopsticks. This experience started us out on a very high note. Next was the food, which was very tasty and well done. The gyoza was nicely cooked and the wasabi shumai was something new that we all loved. The sushi itself was excellent, rolled and/or cut to perfection and not a single complaint. Even some of the specialty rolls we tried were amazing. I've eaten sushi from DC to Hawai`i, and this ranked up there. Price was average for sushi joints, so expect to spend some money but none of it was overpriced and the bill was worth it. We're a bit of a drive from Timonium, but I can see our next trip up there involving a stop for some great sushi. Arigatou gozaimasu!

This is one of the best sushi places in the Baltimore area. I haven't had a bad roll from here. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The owner will come out to your table and ask how things are and give recommendations. He gave us deep fried oreos once, on the house. They were delicious! My favorite rolls are: Myer, Tiger Tail, Evolution, Manna, Pretty in Red, and the Spicy Tuna Maki. I highly recommend this place for a date night, take out, or a chill evening with friends. It's pretty quiet inside which is really nice and hard to find. It's located in a strip mall next to the REI. And it is BYOB.

    (5)

Awesome service! Fried oreos are amazing!!! Best sushi place I've ever been to! Listen to the reviews and check this place out!!!!!

  • Blane V.

Let me start by saying that I could eat sushi every meal. Yamato Sushi is spectacular. The food is outstanding and the service is second to none. The only thing missing from this location is alcohol. With that said, I have never had a sushi roll that was improved by a beer, wine, or a mixed drink. Therefore, this is of little concern. I highly recommend Yamato Sushi for carry-out or dining in. The dinning room is a bit small, so we prefer carry-out. We will continue to use Yamato Sushi as our go to sushi spot in northern Baltimore.

My bf and I came for dinner last night and we enjoyed it! We ordered a family size sushi/nigiri combo and a bowl of spicy seafood udon. All the fish slices tasted fresh and the family size combo was a good deal of 48 pieces of sushi/nigiri. The spicy seafood udon also came in large quantity so all together, it was def enough food for the two of us. Overall it was a great experience!

  • Michelle V.

Went here with my boyfriend for lunch after some REI shopping and WOW we were surprised how absolutely amazing the food was. It's in a nondescript shopping strip and doesn't look like anything special but the quality of the fish was superb, the rice was fresh and sticky, and the staff couldn't have been nicer. I only wish the place were closer to the city so we could go all the time!

  • Heather M.

Came here for my birthday party for a party of 12 or so and they were very accommodating on a Saturday night. Tried all kinds of rolls and dishes and most were pretty good. However, we felt the portions could be larger for the price. The presentation and service was excellent. They also gave us free fried cheesecake for dessert.

A few months ago, I went on a search for a new sushi place in the Cockeysville area. After searching around Yelp a bit and nixing some of the places my husband and I had already been, we came across Yamato Sushi- SO glad we did! Now, I will say, we've only ever ordered carryout from this location because of sheer laziness (there's something better about eating food on your couch in front of a tv)- but my oh my, what delicious food! I've ordered a variety of different kind of sushi there, my husband usually gets some kind of chicken (he hates fish), but every time it comes home absolutely delicious! Both of us have stopped in to pick up our orders too- and every time, the staff is amazingly friendly and sweet. We're going to have to make it a point to dine in one day soon, especially since it's also BYOB (added bonus)!

    (5)
  • Ximena C.

We absolutely love Yamato! Hands down, the BEST sushi around!! Wide selection of rolls and it's always so fresh. You can BYOB which is pretty awesome and the owner is fantastic. We are proud Regulars!

If you have not been, please go! Excellent prices, excellent service, and beautifully presented sushi. It's also BYOB! What more could you ask for? Complimentary orange slices and fortune cookies as dessert! Try the Nyann roll;) great quality sushi in the area!

Decent sushi, a good quality of fresh fish. Not something I'd drive specifically for, but somewhere I'd pop in if I were in the area. We had the golden rooster roll (tasty) and a Christina roll which was good despite seeming to miss the pickled radish they claimed it had. (I was kind of looking forward to that) and decent green tea ice cream. Add good company and you have a nice time. Be advised, it's a hole in the wall with probably 10-12 tables tops. If I could do 3.5 I would.

Yesterday was my first time at Yamato, and honestly I'm going to have a hard time not going back tonight. The restaurant is quaint - small but clean. Probably enough seating for 50? The staff is very friendly and happy to answer questions (I pointed to other patron's rolls to ask what they were eating). And the food was PERFECT. Exactly what I wanted. The Tiger Tail - tuna/scallion/jalepeno roll topped with salmon and shrimp and drizzled with dynamite sauce was BY FAR the best roll I've ever had. I've never had jalepeno in a sushi roll before and the heat was a beautiful addition. Also had the miso - A+, gyoza - A+, and the Timonium Roll (of course) A+. Highly recommend this restaurant. But, disclosure, it is BYOB so swing by the liquor in the shopping center first.

The food came very quickly and was delicious. I ordered the Morgan roll which is a new personal favorite. The wanton soup I ordered was very good as well; my only complaint about the soup is that is was very salty. The restaurant itself was clean and I would like to go back soon.

  • Janet B.

Sushi was fantastic. Our server was very sweet and made a suggestion of an off the menu roll that the chef had just created.... we took her advice & it was awesome, unfortunately there was a language barrier & I'm not sure what she called it. Reasonably priced regular rolls. The pricier fancy rolls are huge & worth the price. Jacket roll and spicy tuna roll were yummy as well. We just had water with our meal, but did see other patrons bringing in their own beer. Would definitely go back.

This is one of my favorite sushi places and the food is top notch. The decor is a bit dated, but they survive very well on their take-out business. With sushi it's all about the quality and the presentation, and they are tops. You can pay extra and eat at a fancier place downtown, but the food will not be as good. And they have the best green tea in the area.

Pound for pound my new favorite sushi joint in the area. There are a lot of decent options in the Baltimore area, but this one always has such great quality, quick efficient service and it's BYOB! I'd give 4.5 stars if I could, the tight quarters made me a little claustrophobic, but that was my only dislike. I think I'll go tonight.

New favorite sushi joint. Sushi should be delicious and beautiful; most places can only get one right, Yamoto does both very well. Excellent attentive service, gorgeous presentation, delicious sushi. I didn't give 5 stars only because the portions seemed a bit small ... but the prices are, too. I'm walking out completely satisfied and stuffed to bursting on nigiri, but having only spent less than $35. Definitely a place to return to often!

Wife came home from a lunch date and said they had a faboulus meal. She was catching up with a friend and both were undecided on what to order. The chef seeing their indecision took upon himself to ask what they like in general and said, "let me choose and you won't be disappointed!" In end they raved about the service and sushi. I decided to check this place out for dinner and I was pressed on the service and sushi. It was almost at full capacity and my sushi came out quickly. The rice was seasoned well, the shrimp, tuna, and vegetables were clean and fresh. I did not need to dip the sushi into the soy to enhance the flavor. To me that says alot for small shops like this that they don't skimp out on essential seasonings. The only knock i have is the amount of rice used on single component rolls (Under $5). It seems they do skimp on the rice to up sale you to buy the expensive roll or buy more single component sushi rolls. Other than that, I would recommend this place over others nearby.

I came here due to my trusty yelp app since I was in the area. The restaurant is in a large shopping center and it was a bit difficult to locate, but with our gps it was not hard to find. The restaurant was pretty full but we were seated quickly. We ordered a few special rolls ( multiple double tuna, Linda special) and we didn't have to wait too long for the food to arrive. Although the sushi is pretty pricey, the quality is very high. The fish just melts in your mouth and the flavor was awesome. Also our server was really nice. He stopped over for conversation and we got some free food (something fried). A++ and will be coming again.

Been coming here for two years. Best sushi I've ever had hands down. Used to be eating their dragon tail roll for lunch every day.

Good sushi. Hamachi nigiri was excellent. Also really liked the Double Eel roll, seared salmon, and the Nyann roll (not on the menu). Don't come with high expectations about the atmosphere, but the food itself is delicious.

My boyfriend and I are huge fans of sushi. We tried Yamato and ate there a few times. We tried other local places and we vowed to never go anywhere else but Yamato. We have gone during low-key and peak hours. We have received amazing service each time. Not only does the food come out quickly, it looks beautiful and is served by friendly employees. We have tried MANY rolls, but our favorites include the Jason Roll, the Crazy Roll, and the Chesapeake Roll. I have never been disappointed. If you want great sushi, check out Yamato.

Very impressed with the variety of rolls. The sushi was fresh and had lots flavor. The decor isn't much but that doesn't bother me. Service was very fast and that was great because I was really hungry! Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants great sushi and friendly staff.

It is so amazing, I'm so surprised the food is so good. Boss is nice, service is good. Size is huge at reasonable price. Will come over and over and over again. The best , or at least top 3 Japanese restaurant in town.

Was in the area so decided to check out this small, likely family-run, sushi place next to REI in this Timonium shopping plaza. Came in around 11:45 a.m. on a weekday and the place was empty. Sushi/sashimi lunch combo ($14.95) - a bit pricey for lunch. It came with 3 pieces of nigiri (tuna, salmon, shrimp), 2 big pieces each of tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and 6 california roll. It was fresh and great quality fish. The salmon was the best. Melt-in-your-mouth amazing. Also came with a bowl of miso soup. Overall, the food is solid and it's priced like any other japanese restaurant albeit the portions may be a bit bigger. I like the place. I would come back if I'm in the area again.

I cant believe this place almost got 5 stars. I went there for lunch today and got the sesame chicken. The miso soup was too salty, the chicken sauce was too sweet, the ginger dressing salad was unflavorful and dull. Their sushi might be a different story but their regular entree was not impressive at all. Service was just okay- neutral.

A fine local sushi joint. Simple decor, friendly, easygoing staff, tasty sushi. I usually get some kind of fairly pedestrian roll, with salmon and/or tuna and/or shrimp, covered with mayo. The rolls are well-executed and large for the price ($11-13). I had the udon noodle soup with tempura shrimp the last time I went; the broth was tasty but the shrimp was a bit limp. We've ordered the fried calamari a number of times, and the last two have been badly over-salted. I think you're better off sticking to the rolls. Service is usually good, but the place does hop on a Friday night. Overall a fine place for casual sushi in Timonium. P.S. Why the hell do all sushi joints play CNN on multiple TVs at all hours? Turn em off and let me eat in peace, willya?

This is my favorite sushi place of all times. The staff is super friendly and rolls are delicious. My favorite is the ayman roll. Magic fire is also good but spicy. Byob and easy parking are a plus. You need to try this place!

This family-owned and operated sushi bar is the best. Don't expect fancy, fru-fru decorations or elaborate platings. If you want the freshest biggest pieces of fish for the best value around go to Yamato. Introduce yourself to Danny, the owner, get a lifetime friend. This place is my only choice got sushi the Baltimore area.

Liked this place before. Love it now. Attentive staff...more than attentive; the management is downright friendly... and the food is unreasonably delicious. Even the things that they shouldn't make well (Shu Mai, chinese-inspired noonle dishes) are great. And the sushi is great. And they re-did the bathrooms. Win win winning.

Sushi was average but this place shines due to their BYOB policy! A liquor store is right next door and Yamato will even serve your wine in a wine chiller if desired. For roll lovers, this place has a huge selection of rolls. However, fish quality was only average. I would dine here again due to the BYOB policy.

The food was OK - If I were rating it on just food alone I would give it 2, maybe 3 stars. The reason I'm giving it 1 star is because the service was awful. We got to the restaurant on a Friday evening around 6pm. It wasn't very busy at all and we got our choice of tables. The particular waiter we had was down right ridiculous. My gf asked what was good on the specials menu. He understood this as a way for him to decide what to order for her. He told her that "I got it - I'll take care of you" and basically ordered for her. We were OK with that as we thought maybe we'll get something special. It ended up being some sort of crab/cream cheese roll. Hardly anything spectacular. Now heres the kicker, after about 40 mins, the place got really packed. People were waiting to be seated. I could tell the waiter wanted us gone. I was just starting to finish up my sashimi dish (again-mediocre). We wanted some tea as well and ordered some. Our waiter then literally told us that we "need to leave in 5 minutes - we have big party." At that point, he brought us our check and literally told us again we needed to leave. I looked at him with disbelief and almost laughter to which he replied that we should come back next time, that we would be treated to a free dessert. Now I don't know if he thought that because we were Asian, that this sort of service was acceptable. Needless to say, I will not be going back there for dessert, or any other meal for that matter.

Everyone here works very hard and the sushi is AMAZING! definitely some of the best I've ever had. I've introduced many other people to Yamato and they continue to go back, too! I used to think it was some standard crappy sushi place in a strip mall, but let me tell you, I was blown away the first time I tried their sushi. High quality, decent prices, and amazing service every time I come in. They definitely make an effort to get to know you too.

Overstuffed sushi rolled perfectly. And there's a lot of options to choose from. Eel is so good ! The matcha green tea is amazing and definitely worth the money. I will update once I get a chance to try their non-sushi food

Yamato is our absolute favorite place for sushi and one of our all time favorite restaurants. The staff is so accommodating and friendly, and the owner, Danny, treats us like family. You can't beat the prices anywhere. BYOB and they are generous with their portions.

I finally have a go to sushi spot...and it's worthy enough to win my 100th review slot! "Hello, sister!" is usually the greeting I get when I walk in. As I walk in and grab a table, the waiter calls over to the chef, "salmon tartare"...because, he knows what I like. I live east of 95, so this is obviously not my neighborhood sushi restaurant, but when I'm in the area, I usually have a private mental battle over stopping here or @ Michaels...because....raw food! I really never get anything else other than the salmon tartare, but I come out of my way for it...it's that good. In fact, I'd consider it my favorite sushi dish in the area, beating out my love of yellowtail/jalapeno/cilantro/panzo...and maybe of all time. It's that good. And really, I don't know how it's considered a tartare as the fish is cut into chunks and the cucumber isn't mixed into the fish. It's more of a sonomono. Either way, it's friggin amazing and I highly recommend it. The staff is always very responsive, and the owner paid me the best compliment - acknowledging my knowledge of sushi. Well *buffs nails on shirt*, I have eaten sushi all around the world. I know crap, and I know excellence. This place is one of the better restaurants I've visited in the Baltimore area.

My wife and I had dinner here on Saturday night. It was crowded, but we lucked out and got a table right away. There is not that much seating, but people can sit at the sushi bar. You can call and make reservations, but we saw a few people come in with reservations and it did not seem to help them any. The service was fast. The waitress was very attentive. This place is also BYOB with no corking fee. They opened and poured our wine which was a nice touch. The owner was a real nice guy and thanked us for coming at the end of the meal. We ordered edamame to start, which was great. There was plenty to share. I ordered the S1 roll combo (tuna, salmon, and California roll). The quality of the sushi is the reason for the 3 stars. The tuna sushi was orange, not red. The salmon was more of a salmon mixture than raw salmon. And the California roll was good, but didn't taste as expected. The price of all 3 rolls was inexpensive though for the quantity, but I am a big tuna roll fan and it was disappointing. My wife ordered a few special rolls. I forget which ones exactly, but these rolls were expensive and should have been better. Get the Japanese fried rice. It is a very good addition to a sushi meal. Excellent to split between a couple of people. It had a good amount of shrimp in it and tasted awesome. Overall we had a great time. The service was excellent. You could run into trouble with seating wait time. The sushi was average. The place in Towson we go to has far better sushi, but it is a little more expensive. The highlight is the BYOB, which gives this place a slight edge.

Stopped into Yamato today to get takeout for lunch on account of the many great reviews it has on Yelp. I ordered a spicy tuna roll and a salmon avocado roll. They were both pretty average as far as sushi goes. Spicy tuna could have been spicier (a lot spicier!) but the fish was fresh, the rice was perfect, and they were both topped with some salmon roe to boot. And, at $10 for both rolls, you can't beat the price. The staff was also super friendly and my rolls were ready in a pinch. That said, the restaurant was near empty so I cannot comment on the service during a busier time. I will definitely come back to try some of their special rolls, which looked interesting and creative, and revise this review afterwards.

We were driving back to PA from BWI and stopped in. Right off the highway, so it was easy off, easy on. Was a gem! Very quick and attentive waitstaff. Waters were constantly refilled. Sushi (we just ordered rolls) was very fresh and filling. Cozy atmosphere and seemed to be filled with regulars that keep coming back. Hope to visit again!

I never really liked any kind of sushi before but somehow developed a California roll addiction in December. Probably because I'll eat anything with crab/krab and avocado. My work BFF was leaving so we had lunch here on her last day. I stuck with my very American options (lunch special with sesame chicken and a California roll) while she got something that was probably far too spicy for me to even consider trying. She also got some fried tofu, which was interesting and a nice introduction to tofu if you haven't had it before... because it basically just tastes like fried... I've been here twice and the first time the service was very good and the second was kinda meh... the waitress kind of judged me for my use of a fork and knife (the pieces of sesame chicken were giant and my fingers are just really opposed to using chop sticks) and then grabbed the receipt as it was still being signed. It had started to get a little busy and it's a small restaurant so I understood that we shouldn't really linger, but still. Regardless, still a good choice. Good, cheap lunch specials. And like 1 minute from my office so it's a winner.

Yamato is my go to in Lutherville. The owner and the staff are always very welcoming and friendly. The sushi is always delicious. I cant speak for any of the cookie-cutter California-type sushi rolls, but all of the special rolls I have ordered, and anything I ask for specially, has been delicious. Sashimi is always fresh and tastey too. I usually try something different every time I come as they have a constantly changing special maki roll menu. I'd recommend experimenting, and asking for recommendations from the staff as per your tastes (shrimp tempura, tuna, salmon, eel, etc). I always get an order of seaweed salad (perfectly seasoned with sesame oil and seeds and tossed with cucumber) and edamame to start my meal. Its BYOB and there is an equally friendly liquor store a few doors down. TVs show the news, Jeopardy, Ravens games etc, and the chefs behind the bar give you the typical salutations when coming and going. It can get pretty crowded past 6pm on the weekends and they bunch tables together, but service doesn't usually suffer.

Yamato is my first stop for sushi. Danny runs a great shop. The people there are very nice and take care of their customers. It's not just a place to eat, it's Danny's place. I found the place because it's in the same shopping center as the food store I buy my groceries. I know, you're thinking, "shopping center sushi???" I'm very picky about my sushi. I'm apt to stick with sashimi because I like the taste of the different kinds of fish, even uni. I don't need the rice. It's about the taste, the texture, how tender the fish is and the serving temperature. That means the person who's buying the fish has to know what they're doing. Maybe I'll see you there. I'm usually at the sushi bar. They don't have a liquor license so byob. There's a liquor store 4-5 doors away. Parking is a breeze. And if it's daytime, you're not that far from the new Glarus Chocolate shop on York RD, just north of Smythe Jewelers. Try the dark chocolate almond bark...........yum.

friendly, attentive waitstaff. everything here is fresh and well executed. I especially like the udon soup. In light of the fact there aren't any excellent japanese/sushi restaraunts in the Baltimore area, this place does a very good job, and is a better alternative to the towson options.

Best sushi in Baltimore. I've been all across Maryland and to a few different states and countries to get my sushi...this is my favorite. It wins on freshness, service, and price. It's byob and has great lunch specials for those in the area. I recently moved to the city, but I still venture out to Timonium just for this place. Reliable choices are the tiger tail and black dragon rolls. My favorite at the moment is the Evolution roll. If simple is your game the eel avocado can't be beat.

The sushi rolls are pretty good here. I tried many of their speciality rolls and have not been disappointed yet but I was not a fan of their sashimi. I personally love spicy tuna hand rolls, and although it had a nice flavor, I wish it would have a lot more kick to it. Overall, the sushi rolls are pretty good and will continue to go back. My favorite part of dinner is getting their deep fried oreo cookie with a side of whipped cream. It is absolutely delicious!

I'm always impressed by generous portions which make the cost relatively lower when it provides you with 2 meals. Their Tom Yum Soup is a delectable combination of sweet and spicy, chock full of substantive vegetables, which I just love. The flavor of the sauce on the Eel Roll is enhanced by the roll being served with warm rice. This is a place to visit over and over.

I tried Yamato years ago when they first opened and I wasn't impressed. A friend told me how good they are now, so I have it a try. Glad I did. On a weekday around noon, it was busy but not crowded. My nephew and I sat at the sushi bar, ordered 4 rolls and it was in front of us within 5 minutes. The rolls were fat, too, with generous pieces of very fresh fish. So awesome! I used to call Edo Sushi my go-to sushi place, but Yamato has now taken that title! Can't wait to go back!

My husband is a sushi lover, so when he dragged me, and our two young children to a sushi joint, I wasn't surprised. I'm not a sushi fan, nor are my 5 and 7 year old, but we were trying to be accommodating to our sushi junkie. My children ate the Miso soup, and shared an order of the tempura chicken. I ordered the chicken Pad thai, and my husband ordered a few rolls. We were all in heaven! Every last bite was delicious. And we all went home with plenty of leftovers. The portion size was huge. Finally, what really stole my heart was the friendly, accommodating staff. They sat us at the sushi bar where my children could be entertained by the fish tank and the sushi chefs. They gave the kids oranges to enjoy, and then surprised them with dessert...they asked me ahead of time w/o the kids hearing. Great experience all around, and I'm very excited to have this as a local, neighborhood restaurant!

I recently got a take out order from here and dabbled around the sushi menu to try a variety of specialty rolls. All of them were very good, some were a little small for the price however they made up for it in taste. The tuna pizza is crazy good (fried rice cake, seaweed salad, tuna, with a spicy sauce on top) If you're in the Timonium area and feel the need for some sushi come here you won't be disappointed.

  • Keejoo L.

This place is probably the best sushi place in the Timonium area. I have been here numerous times including a new years eve. Its just that good. The sushi is always fresh and they are always introducing new rolls to the menu that are just different to make you think, 'would that really be good?' Even though the location is quite small its worth the wait to get sushi from here.. The owner is really nice too. He makes sure to do his rounds and gets out to greet all the guests and make sure the food is up to par with what the people want.

I stopped in for a quick lunch after reading the Yelp reviews because I was in the area. I was immediately greeted and seated. I ordered the shrimp tempura & California roll lunch special. Even though the restaurant was a little busy, everything came out so fast. The miso soup, yummy! The California roll was stuffed and delicious. The shrimp tempura roll was a little more rice-y than shrimpy...but it was still tasty. I'll be back again!
