I have been meaning to try this place for a long time after following the vagabondchef on Instagram and seeing his creations. This place is located in the ground floor of the McClure House in what used to be "Club 304" (thank God that place is extinct). I stopped here once on a Friday night around 8:00 and it was dead so I was scared off and didn't enter. Fast forward a month or so and I went with a group of 4 on a Saturday evening around 7:00 PM. It still was dead inside with only 8 or so people but I was dead set on trying this place out. We were seated right away (as expected) and given menus and offered drinks. The menu is pretty extensive. This restaurant is free from typical chain restaurant offerings (you know, throw some frozen stuff in a deep fryer with a few ounces of salt). Everything is created by the Vagabond Chef himself and everything had clear descriptions on the menu. Also, everything is sourced locally from the area. Check their menu out on their website. It is an impressive menu for the Wheeling area. I started off with a Hummus platter for the table. Kalamata olives, cucumbers, grape tomatoes, red peppers, pepperoncinis, feta cheese, crostini bread and homemade hummus. This hummus was excellent. Topped any hummus I have ever had. Only thing I would add to this platter is olive oil for bread dipping. I had my eyes set on the Beefalo lamb burger but unfortunately, it was unavailable which is to be expected when things are sourced locally and not always available. I opted for the Apple Bacon Chicken Tenderloin. See pictures below. Only thing I wish here is that the apples had more tang to them. It came with house made tortilla chips. A lot of people think the Ye Olde Alpha has the best chips in the area and after trying these, I disagree. These have their own special seasoning and are hot and crispy. They are served with some sort of beef chili for dipping. It was good, but I would prefer salsa myself. Also, the serving of the beef chili could be larger. I exhausted it with a few chips. My brother went with the Ruby Tuna sandwich. He thought it was excellent. his wife went with the Korean Pork Tacos. She commented they were excellent, especially the tortillas. This is a great place for downtown Wheeling. I will be back. This type of menu is not something that the area is used to but if you try it, you will be back. The service was excellent. Drinks were refilled. Fresh sliced lemons were brought to us on a plate for anyone at the table. Plenty of napkins also refilled. Food presentation is great which is unheard of in this area. I'm not sure if there is a bar there, but it would be a nice addition. Great job to the Vagabond Chef and his staff. I need to make it there for Sunday brunch. They also have live music on some nights.

I traveled to Wheeling for a quick trip to see a friend for lunch. When I checked yelp, Vagabond Kitchen was rated highly and it was in the Mcclure hotel, which I where my friend was staying. So, it seemed like a perfect option. Plus, I read that the ingredients were more local, which I prefer I had the vegan chili and the white bean burger (also meatless). The burger came with about 4-5 (largish) fries and a pickle. I enjoyed the chili; it had a slight kick, was thick, and the (half) corn bread piece served with the chili had slivers of jalapeños, which was nice. The burger was quite bland. I asked for BBQ sauce (one of the only condiments I usually eat) and they didn't have any. I ended up adding ketchup, which I don't care for in the first place, but the meal needed something else. The French fries were okay. Again, they were a little bland and difficult ultimatly to eat. My friend had the turkey and bacon sandwich, without mayo, and he said it was decent. Although I don't plan on returning to Wheeling, even if I did, I would not go back to vagabond kitchen. The service was subpar, even when we were the only ones in the restaurant. The entire staff left! One of the cooks came out and saw us. He asked if we were okay or needed anything, which I thought was nice -- but it wasn't his job. In the middle of our meal we had a different server. Not a problem. The new server kept forgetting about us and we were the only customers! It took a good 10 minutes to get our checks and even more time for her to return to cash us out and bring our change back. I'm not sure about the other reviews, but our experience was no where near what has been portrayed in the reviews.

This place is attached to the hotel. It is very good. Classy food in a diner type place. The chef is a genius for sure. Pan seared ahi tuna is hard to pull off bug he did an excellent job. Clean and hostess and wait staff was great (someone called in sick). The only downside is the strange choice of artwork of "Saints and Sinners."

I've eaten at Vegabond for dinner and Sunday brunch close to the time they opened for business. I like their salads and for brunch you can't go wrong with their French toast although everything I tried I was hot and wholesome good. I know of the chef and he has a good reputation for using good ingredients and preparing every dish like its his first. I recommend this restaurant.

Wow! I have eaten all over the world and worked for five years at Austin Texas's most locally sourced restaurant, so the snob in me was pleasantly surprised to find this awesome danged tasty place in Wheeling WV. The ingredients are high quality, the menu has familiar comfort items as well as creative items the chef has come up with, and they even have totally rad live music. Great service and prices, especially considering the quality of the MEAT! yum! Got to meet the owner and his wife, and they're an inspiring young couple working on the American dream. Eat here! Yummmm!

Hi guys - this fantastic restaurant is still working out a few of the kinks of being a new place, but all minor things I'm sure will get figured out in time - BYO Establishment. I think the first/only one in Wheeling, at least as far as I know - Hummus wrap. If the ingredients sound like your cup of tea (quinoa, feta, white bean, veggies) it's great, I think about this sandwich a lot when I forget my lunch at work :) - Chicken and turkey sandwiches - SO GOOD. The one with derby sage cheese is probably my favorite thing on the menu - Lamburger gets raves reviews from everyone who has it (although I haven't gotten to it just yet) - BROWNIES. do it. :) very cakey, not fudgy. Service can sometimes be spotty, but calm down - they're new and they have some really good food options :) They have brunch of Sundays - it's SO nice to have a place to go on a Sunday around here. They mix things up a lot (wings on Thursdays, taco specials, etc.) which is great, and I love that they're trying something new for the area (like tasting menus on the fourth Friday of each month)

I have only had the opportunity for breakfast here, but it may just be the best breakfast you can find in Wheeling! And, a good breakfast has been very hard to come by since moving here 5 years ago. I have easily eaten here 10-12 times since it opened and I've yet to have a poor experience. The waiters/waitresses are always friendly and respectful. They care about the service they provide (not always found in this area). The food has been absolutely delightful. I have eaten general scrabbled eggs, breakfast potatoes, and toast; each of which were cooked to perfection. The breakfast sandwich is simply amazing and I highly recommend ordering it on a fresh in-house baked biscuit. The biscuits are just delectable and seem like they are made just for the egg sandwich! On my most recent trip, I had the steel cut oats and potatoes (I can't eat enough of their potatoes!). This was just as delicious as the everything else. The oats were served with fresh cut strawberries and side of brown sugar to sprinkle to your liking. There is also a veggie omelet, which I have only tried from a breakfast partner's plate but it was also delicious. I am a vegetarian and, if you eat eggs, there are plenty of options. Vegans have the option of the steel cut oats which will leave you more than satisfied. Can't say enough good things about this restaurant! From the food to the employees and owners, it is a top notch establishment. I look forward to eating here often.

Stopped in with a group of 8. They had an open 8 top but the hostess said it would be at least a half hour because the "kitchen couldn't handle the numbers". I had eaten there once before and food was average but not terrible so I could not imagine them being unable to handle a not quite full dining room. Half of being in the restaurant business is adequate customer service. This was a huge fail. I'll not go back and will not recommend.

Fresh, local ingredients. A creative menu. An eye towards local character. All great things in a restaurant. What's unusual about it though? It's in Wheeling. West Virginia. Yes, that Wheeling-the one with fried food on every plate. Self-proclaimed Vagabond Chef Matt Walsh (I recommend checking out his website- interesting read) has returned to Wheeling, in his very own Vagabond Kitchen. At a recent chili cook off, I loved his take on a classic chili, so I was very excited to give the Kitchen a try. Definitely not a disappointment! We enjoyed a good, but unexciting artichoke dip as a starter, but it was all up from there. I had a wonderfully seasoned lemon pepper chicken sandwich, flavored with grilled peppers and onions and sriracha mayo. The lemon flavor was delicate, yet somehow not overpowered by the sriracha. A very good sandwich! The highlight was the side of chips and salsa. The salsa was spicy and flavorful-very clearly homemade by someone who cares about good salsa! My husband enjoyed a pulled pork sandwich, which he declared one of the best he's ever had-not overpowered by BBQ sauce, as so many are. As of now, they are still working from an opening menu, so there are not many options at the moment. I do hope to come back soon to try a locally sourced beefalo or lamb burger. It's BYOB, which is a definite plus. Service was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I hope it catches on soon! At 6 PM on a Saturday, we and one other table were the only people in the restaurant (located on the first floor of the historic McClure Hotel.) The space itself was a little dated and depressing, other than local photographer Bennett McKinley's wonderful prints of everyday Wheeling people, titled Meet me in the Alley. Given the overall fun and creative vibe of the place, I wouldn't be surprised to see a new take on the decor in the near future. Overall, a solid four stars, and I have a feeling a fifth is inevitable in the coming weeks!

Food was pretty good. First restaurant in wv that I have gone to that had other offerings besides BBQ or fried food. Waitress tried to sell the food to is as we ate, which was distracting.

We were on a road trip and looking for an interesting place to stop for some quality food. Found the Vagabond Kitchen online and liked its locally sourced ethos and creative menu. We were not disappointed - had a delicious lunch: chips and salsa - as a Californian who grew up on real Mexican food, I appreciated the freshly fried tortilla chips and the fresh made salsa, Korean bbq tacos - couldn't believe how good they were with homemade kimchi - and a lamb burger which my friend said was one of the best he'd ever had - he appreciated the home made bread in particular). Excellent, prompt and attentive (but not intrusive) service. Highly recommend this place. Also love the location - next time we hope to check out some of old town Wheeling. On a personal level I really appreciate that the owners of this restaurant chose to invest in the old downtown.

What a gem we have here in the Ohio Valley with the Vagabond Kitchen. The space is decorated in local artists' work that grabs your interest and adds to the experience of dining here. The lighting is subdued but perfect for the space. I didn't catch the name of the lady who greeted us, but she was really pleasant and welcoming. Our server was Sara, and she was flat out awesome. Super enthusiastic about the menu and took great care of us during the meal. For starters we ordered the Hummus Platter. It is outstanding, handcrafted homemade hummus with a perfect amount of feta, olives, peppers to go along. Its served with perfectly toasted rounds of Italian bread. We ran out of the rounds before the hummus was gone and Sara brought us a few more to finish it up. My girlfriend ordered the Lamb Burger and I ordered the Korean BBQ Tacos. Her burger was perfectly cooked and seasoned, and at Sara's suggestion she topped it with a bit of hummus and their own handcrafted tzatziki sauce and it really worked with the entire flavor of the burger. The roll it was served on was fresh and rounded out the whole burger perfectly. Served with fresh cut steak fries which were also cooked and seasoned well. My tacos were outstanding. The flavors of the Korean BBQ were spot on to the flavors I fell in love with eating in Korean spots around the country. Meat was perfectly cooked, the fresh greens were spot on, and then there was the kimchi. This place makes its OWN kimchi! Who does that?? The Vagabond Chef does that's who! And its spicy sour perfection! The tortillas for my tacos were fine, not a whole lot you can do with a corn tortilla. My side was fresh tortilla chips and salsa. No surprise they make the salsa fresh as well and it's outstanding. Overall, I can say this is one of the best dining experiences I've had in a long time and the fact its local just assures we will be regulars in no time. If you live in the area and haven't been here, change that as soon as you can. If you are passing through, you owe it to yourself to get off the interstate and stop by.

While trekking through the Ohio River Valley, I happened upon a skull placed on a stake, seeming to tell me to stay away. I ignored this warning and found myself in the town of Wheeling. Within its towering buildings, ripe with age there was a basement. There I found a kitchen... immediately I was greeted by a flash of lightning and a snarling, roaring, beastly, monster-bear riding a high performance motorcycle. I shook with fear... The ground was rumbling as I was lifted onto my seat. A pitcher of ice water was presented before me to quench the fire inside my throat. I drank my fill. Out from the steaming, blaze of a kitchen came a chicken sandwich the likes of which I've never seen. Onions expertly caemelized in the fires of hell, apples picked from what must have been an enchanted orchard lay grilled inside it's "grains of the gods" bread. On the side I find chips sprinkled with a dusting of the sacred herbs. My pupils dilated, my heart swelled, the chorus grew louder and all the colors of my soul were painted on the black and white portraits that surrounded me. The salsa flowed like blood. The brownies, the tea, the french toast, the decadence, the aroma, the value!! It was all too much! I found light in the shadows, I found hope in the pits of darkness. As I left I turned and looked back. It was clear that I had changed that day. Something was inside of me, and it was delicious...
