Stopped in for dinner with my parents at Later Alligator...I hadn't been in for a couple years. We were immediately welcomed by an old middle school friend, the restaurant owners son, Mitch aka Brett. The decorations inside celebrate the beautiful history of Wheeling...keeping all of it alive on their walls. We started with the fried green tomatoes. Get them while you can! Brilliant. I had the BBQ/Mac & Cheese sandwich. So good I took a picture that may end up on Instagram. This place does it right. When I come back home to Wheeling I always hit Coleman's & DiCarlo's...I'm adding Later Alligator to the list. Definitely stop by!

We came in on a Friday night around 7pm. We were worried it might be busy, but luckily it was mostly empty. We were seated fairly quickly in the back section where just one other table was occupied. The waitress was at the table, so she had to see that we sat down in her section. We looked at our menus and decided on our food & drink orders. This usually takes me a long time, so it seemed weird no one had come to our table by the time I made up my mind. Then we realized that no one was coming. We waited approximately fifteen minutes for someone to come and take our drink orders. Or to explain a reason for the delay. But nothing happened. We finally gave up and left without eating or drinking anything. I looked for someone to talk to on our way out, but I couldn't spot anyone who seemed to work there. Not sure where they all disappeared to. Only giving two stars instead of one because the menu sounded good and I liked the interior. No idea how the food is and I am certain the service is lacking. Will not be back.

New in town and I stopped to ask someone walking by if they'd point me to a good burger place in town. They didn't, instead they sent me for crepes at later gator. I've had them before and let's just say they definitely have some other places a run for their money. The service 5 stars The crepes 4 stars Drinks 3 stars Dessert 4 stars Decor 3 stars I will go back for more

Oh so good. The food is simple and fresh and sublime. I had pulled pork and mac and cheese...on a sandwich! Genius. The BF had the Deja Vu, Willy Style. He loved it! The place is just adorable and the help is just that...so helpful and nice. Oh, did I mention my coconut iced tea? It was out of this world! I can't wait to visit Wheeling again and check out the crepes. I bet they're great too. I highly reccomend.

Their slogan is simple - Eat or We Both Starve Who would have thought that in this tired, rust-belt town there would be a restaurant comparable to a place you might find in Greenwich Village or the center of LA's arts district? There it is... right downtown on the edge of Ohio in Wheeling, West Virginia. Later Alligator is eclectic, inspired and undeniably tasty. Yelp's phone app. comes through again. I recommend the Strawberry Brie-Zze which is what drove us here from the highway during our road trip (excellent without the meat), or the Mac West. Even the Caprese salad is jazzed up with their special oven roasted tomato recipe. Usually when a restaurant labels their menu items with cutesy names, I start knocking stars off of my reviews, but it actually fits here. It's a bit like walking into a mix between a carnival and an antique store. If it's nice outside, ask for outdoor seating which is not obvious when you enter. Ironically, they're serious with their multiple signs all around about no outside food or drink being permitted other than in the gated patio area. Is this a problem in WV? - maybe so. Be sure to have a look at the bizarre (but cool) bathroom decor - in both of them,

We stopped here while traveling from Ainsworth NE to Gilbertsville PA. We like to stop at unique local eating establishments. We shared a bowl of their fresh tomato basil soup and the Wolly crêpe. The food was excellent and the service was very friendly. They use local fresh vegetables which was evident in the taste of our meal.

Great local color. Great decor and history displayed in the restaurant. Outdoor seating too. Now, about the food. Great!! Sandwiches, crepes...the gammet. The servers were very down to earth and welcoming. Felt like we knew them and very personable without sitting at our table...(you know what I mean). Clean and funky restroom decor...check it out and you may get a kick out of the antiques on the wall. Hubby and sis in law had a barbecue macaroni and cheese burger. Mac is in the burger. Pita and hummus chips were tasty too.

We stopped here on a trip from NJ to KY with our 2 kids. We were looking for a family-friendly place with good food and this one fit the bill. Our table was in a little nook which allowed our toddler to explore without being too disruptive to the rest of the patrons (not too many, we arrived at 8:30). We had 2 drinks each, 2 adult meals and one kid meal and a dessert for about $60 before tax and tip. Place is great. It's obvious that the owners have put a lot of thought into running a restaurant; the menu is simple with mostly choices of sandwiches and crepes. Prices are reasonable... All in all a really great experience.

Love this place. Love the atmosphere, the decorations, and the food. Menu has some great selections you won't even find in bigger cities. Service is always great, food is always spot on. Booths are a little cramped but every building in Centre Market is lacking space.

We were driving cross country and found this place on the Yelp app and thought it would be worth a shot. Wow, what a great find that was. This was probably one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. We found our way off the interstate and found some street parking. The inside of the restaurant was eclectic and really kind of cheeky. The decor was kind of random, but it created a nice atmosphere and sort of appealed to my no nonsense roots. I enjoyed their background music as well. We were promptly seated and offered the menu, where I was able to find about 10 things that would suit my sometimes picky palate. I ended up with the Strawberry Brie-Zze, a sammy with grilled (!) strawberries, brie, basil, turkey, and some strawberry/jalapeno jam. This sandwich was DELICIOUS. The bread was grilled perfectly, the ratio of meat to toppings was perfect, and the sandwich was constructed perfectly. I was sort of in awe of how good it was. I couldn't believe this sandwich was less than $10. My hubby got the Cheesy Mac & Rib, and he cleaned his plate too. Both sandwiches were served with a dill pickle and blue tortilla chips, which I could've done without, but to each his own. We split the Snapper crepe (nutella, carmel, pecans, whipped cream) for dessert, and I actually asked my husband out loud if I could lick the plate. For about $30, this was an incredible lunch. When we take this route to visit family, we will absolutely stop here again. The town of Wheeling is pretty cute too!

On our drive from Washington DC to Indianapolis we decided to take a pit stop here for lunch. After spending three days in DC/Silver Springs and eating out for lunch and dinner every day this was by far the best meal we had on our trip. Based on what we saw of Wheeling it was really surprising that a restaurant like this would be here (it seemed much more suited to an urban center than an old mill town). I'm not really sure how to describe the restaurant itself. Its theme was alligators, the Wheeling Steel mill and roadside memorabilia/advertisements. The staff was all very friendly and attentive. They have an extensive sandwich and crepe menu ( lateralligator.net/menu.… ). I ordered the Cheesy Mac and Rib (BBQ pulled pork, sauteed onion, cheddar and mac & cheese on grilled bread) and my wife ordered the Strawberry Brie-Zze (grilled strawberries, basil, turkey, jalapeno strawberry jelly on grilled bread). Both were fantastic. The pulled pork had great BBQ sauce and wasn't overly shredded (it wasn't a pile of mush). For dessert we had the Snappers crepe (caramel, nutella, pecans and whipped cream) which was delicious as well. Next time I drive east to see my family I will definitely be stopping off here again. I'd highly recommend this restaurant.

This is a great place to eat in a uniquely Wheeling atmosphere. Escape the chain food options off the highways and enter a real neighborhood vibrant with locally owned businesses. Step into the future of wholesome food while enjoying a nostalgic trip down Wheeling's memory lane. Young (family friendly) and old, hipster, circle, or square- everyone will find something to love. The food details: fresh and plentiful food. Friendly service with many menu options including lots of cafe style drinks to get your coffee, chai, Italian soda, or beer fantasies on. Stop by for a bite to eat and it's worth waiting if a small crowd of like minded people have gathered for food just like you. Local businesses dream of lots of customers. Come be a part of that and create a little food heaven of your own.

There are not a lot of fantastic local restaurants in Wheeling, a victim of two shopping centers to the west and east that suck the life out of the city. But this little sandwich and panini joint, which happens to serve some great brews, is tucked into a historic commercial building next to Center Market. The interior is great as well. I like a place with some ambiance, and looking up and finding a wall full of Wheeling Steel trash cans is just great. Come here for the local charm and food.

Came through about six months ago and I'm heading back in! The staff was great! The vibe of the building is perfect! My dad and I loved the food. My uncle never had a crepe before she was a bit confused but we're for Orange County California and we loved it! Thanks wheeling for doing it right and ask about the names on the ceiling beams!

Went to Wheeling for a graduation and had 10 for dinner. Had reservations and went right in. AC broken so it was hot. Really hot for Wheeling in May. But what ya gonna do?? Food was great, service was right on. Got My first ever savory crepe and it was very good and recommend the chicken one with Cajun sauce. Very good.

This is a unique and fun place to dine. The wait staff were very nice and the environment was warm and enjoyable. My dining partner and I both had crepes for our main dish, and they were excellent. We also had the artichoke dip appetizer, very delicious. Everything was served timely and tasted excellent. For a pair we shared an appetizer, each got a crepe with sides and two beverages for under $40.

Wonderful place for a light meal. Quaint and eclectic. Unfortunately they close fairly early for dinner - 8 PM so we don't get there often. (early closing is the reason for only four stars). Tomato basil soup is wonderful! The Belt Buster sandwich was just delicious and the French dip sandwich was also very good, a little salty though. And don't overlook their fresh brewed coffee... It really is good.

Coolest place ever! Traveling thru Wheeling @found this on yelp. Best artichoke appetizer! Flavor was like nothing we have ever had@ cracker like triangles for dipping yummy! Had the Strawberry Brie-Zzee sandwich Awesome! What a wonderful flavor @ unique. My husband Clara Pillar @ raved about the beef. We topped it off with Smore Crepe. The marshmallows we're actually warm @ melting. Couple beside us had soup served with this BIG puff on top. It's like a cracker biscuit combo. They said it was wonderful. The decor is so quirky@ charming. There's a city market with shops etc at the end of there block you can explore. Sure wish this was closer to home. Can't wait to travel thru again so we can stop. So many things to try.

I'll admit that I wasn't very excited to end up in Wheeling last weekend - but fortunately we found this spot and I was so relieved! If you're a vegetarian - go here. I really appreciated all the veg-friendly menu options and they had some good beer options. It looks like it was getting crowded when we left which was still early (7:30) so probably make a reservation.

Just ok food. Horrible service. Long wait to get served, though they we're not busy. No drink refill, took forever to get the check. Overpriced. I know I won't be back.

  • Douglas W.

I am sure I have no idea why people are lined up at the door to get in. It's charming, friendly and i like the menu but that's where it ended for me. I had the hocus pocus sandwich. It was anemic and under seasoned. Brown avocado, flavorless cheese, grey button mushrooms and a bit of roasted red pepper. Bland and sad. It came with a quarter pickle that someone had stepped on and a few corn chips. I said something to the hostess and she said it was a house favorite. There must not be any other places to eat in Wheeling. I did like the tomato basil soup and the nice crouton that came with it. I tried Miriam's Greek salad. It was pretty good. The oil vinegar was heavy on the oil and the salad needed salt and pepper just like my "sandwich". I need a do over. I wasted an hour and am hungry.

From the moment you walk in, you realize attention to detail is not overlooked. The menu had a bit of price shock value at first, but then you settle in to the choices, and realize you get what you pay for sometimes. We had the BVD and the 7 stars. The BVD is bob villamagna's delight hummus, spinach, roasted red peppers, onions, mushrooms, black beans, fontina, tomatoes, and ranch or chipotle mayo dressing in a grilled spinach wrap. Delish! I had the & 7 Stars. It was a french dip, not so thinly sliced roast beef, swiss cheese on a baguette, au jus. Both were served with blue corn chips and a Garlic dill pickle spear. We went on a Saturday and there was only 1 person out front and it was busy. Don't go if you are in a hurry. Enjoy the atmosphere!

Great food if you eat wheat. If you're gluten free dont bother. My simple salad was not satisfying (though the curry dressing was fantastic) as i watched my friends eat decadence. Also, $8 for a kids meal? My kid had tuna on white bread with a scoop of vanilla ice cream...

A large city style cafe in small city like wheeling that offers fresh organics and excellent recipes! It's hard to find this type of quality and uniqueness in Wheeling. It makes you feel better about eating rather than eating at other local restaurants were the only item that isn't fried is the salad! Thank you Lator Gator for offering the city of Wheeling a great place to wine and dine.

This place was everything the reviews said it to be and more. The menu has something for everyone. I had the Pulp Fishing the sauce on. it was amazing. My husband had the club car on a croissant and he loved his too

I have been to this restaurant several times and have never had a bad experience. The waitress Amanda that I had today did a fantastic job! Very attentive to drink refills and recieved are order in a timely fashion! See Sam Run is a favorite of mine and my sisters it consists of Salmon, spinach, feta, and cream chese on a crepe. We've also sampled the different chicken crepes available along with several of the sweet crepes. All are very appetizing! I recommend the Black Forest for cherry fans or the Monkey Business for banana lovers!

We were passing on the highway near Wheeling on our way from Columbus to Washington DC. Getting to dinner time we decided to check Yelp for help. Yelp showed this place on the app. It was the only place with a good number of review and positive votes. So we rerouted and got into Wheeling, I have to say it is a very interesting looking town, with a very cool layout and old steel bridges. As soon as you get into Later Alligator you notice the Wheeling tin steel industry that the town was built on. We had some good sandwiches and savory crepes very fresh and healthy ingredients. The service was great and lovely. They also had a small outside patio. The place was busy and energetic which made it a nice experience to see the Wheeling community.

2 stars for the food. If it was just based on the food, I would've given 5 stars. However...the night we went, Friday, was a disaster inside the restaurant. My friend and I entered the place after several people had left. We saw two tables opened (one was for two people). The host asked if we had a reservation. When we said "No," we received a queer look and were then forced to sit at the "reject" table. This table is literally a piece of glass, no wider than a hardcover book. Oh and fast forward to the end, those two open tables were never sat at. Anyways, it took about 20 minutes to get our drinks but thankfully our soup came out immediately. Now, I've been to Later Gator several times. It is one of my favorite restaurants around here, HOWEVER, I only enjoy getting take-out there. This visit and previous visits before prove that either they need more staff or they aren't the greatest in customer service. I often feel like the servers avoid you like the plague. Our food actually didn't take as long as previous visits but that doesn't bother me too much. The food is good so they can take however long it takes to get to me. So I got the Sam N Ella with potato salad as a side and my friend got the Hawaiian Crepe (unsure of what it is called). I ALWAYS get the Sam N Ella with the potato salad and it is ALWAYS 100%. My friends crepe was ok but not the best. She didn't like how she couldn't taste or even see the brown sugar. Here comes the bad part. As we were attempting to eat, about 5 gnats were swarming us. They were definitely attracted to the food as they weren't around earlier. We were literally looking like crazy cats swatting a play feather. It was getting so bad, we couldn't enjoy the food anymore. Now you're probably wondering "Why didn't you tell the server?" Well, she disappeared. We finally had to ask another server for some boxes. After packing up our food, we still did not see our server so my very impatient friend got up and stood at the register. In conclusion, will I ever eat Later Gator's food? Absolutely. But, I will not be eating inside anytime soon.

This restaurant absolutely does not belong in the "gluten-free" category. Their primary offering is crepes and sandwiches--not staples of a GF diet, particularly when GF breads are not offered.

Such a cute eatery, the type of place you would expect to find in a much more metropolitan neighborhood! Soups of the day were delicious as were the sandwiches and wraps we ordered. All of the food was great but I'm holding out on the fifth star due to the service. Our waitress was attentive but the hostess wasn't at all personable or interested in checking us out.

I wrote this review on Google 4 years back... If you are ever visiting Wheeling, give this place a try. The ambiance is great, outdoor settings are nice and the owners are super friendly. I was *surprised* to visit a place like this in Wheeling. As for food, first try the tomato basil soup ( a must ). Just awesome. Try one of their wraps, they are unique and very tasty. Their desserts are good too.

This place is great! My fiancé and I stopped in while passing through Wheeling and I'm so glad we did! Great atmosphere and also caters to both vegetarians and carnivores, which is important to us since I'm a vegetarian and he is not. We started with a couple seasonal beers; not a huge beer selection, but they do have more than just bud light. We also ordered the artichoke dip as a starter. We were a little nervous because it is served cold and not your normal warm dip, but it was super good! Took a little longer to get than you would expect for a cold dip, but worth the wait. Came with both pita wedges and blue tortilla chips. I had the Bvd wrap, which was delicious! Maybe a little too heavy on the hummus, but it definitely hit the spot. My fiancé had the 7 stars (French dip). He really enjoyed his as well. The sandwich was a bit smaller than expected, but he enjoyed every bit of it. Both sandwiches came with blue tortilla chips, which we used to finish our artichoke dip. We also split the monkey business crepe for dessert, which we both enjoyed. Hit the spot, not overly sweet, but a nice ending to an enjoyable meal. Overall, I would definitely recommend a stop into Later Alligator and anticipate a return visit from us, would love to explore the menu more. They have a large menu and a variety of vegetarian options which is rare for SW PA/WV where most restaurants only have 1 or 2 meatless options, if any. Service was a little slow, but not offensively slow. I would caution that it may be best to stop in for lunch than dinner; as it is more of a cute café with unique sandwiches and crepes and coffee. Also, I got a HUGE kick out of their "Alley-gator curb side service"! We didn't use this but I loved the pun for their alley pick up option.

Good food!! I had the French dip. My husband had the apple butter, brie, and turkey. Awesome selection of sandwiches, good vibe, nice staff. We would come again if we were local. No draft beer, nuts good selection of bottled beer and wine. Crepe yum city!

Yelp led us here on our way from Niagara Falls back to GA. Great ambience. Decorated with lots of local antique Wheeling memorabilia. I had the chicken tortilla soup and husband had the tomato basil. Both very delicious. For dessert I had the last tango crepe. I'm embarrassed to say I didn't stop for a moment to even get a sip of water between bites. Wish I'd savored it more and slowed down but it was SO good I inhaled it. Husband travels this way often and said he will be back for sure!

Have been meaning to try this place since my family still lives in Wheeling and everyone talks about it... What a let down. The food was HORRENDOUS. Like someone previously already stated, my avocado/guacamole was BROWN...and so was my sister's...so it wasn't just a fluke. Why in the world would you serve an obviously bad/old thing of guacamole to a customer? The crepe was also overdone and there appeared (and tasted) to be Velveeta cheese or Kraft singles in it. It was really not good and I'm not a picky eater. I mentioned how disappointed I was to some friends and they said things have gone down hill which is a shame because Wheeling is really lacking in the "buy local" department. The service was very nice and friendly though - which is why I'm giving two stars instead of just one.

We ordered the Pulp Fishin' (shrimp, avocado, etc on a roll), the Alligator Rock (crepe with avocado, pesto, roasted red peppers, etc) and another veggie crepe. All really good quality with fresh ingredients. Nice flavor combinations. Service was quick with fast refills, etc. (Did not get the children's menu and had to ask after hearing the table next to us ordering off of it.) Also got the espresso chocolate mousse crepe for dessert. Looked a little off (see photo) but don't let that scare you. It was fantastically rich and delicious. Shared between 3 of us.

Good selection of sandwiches, and some really tasty crepes. Decor is fun mix of alligators and memorabilia from Wheeling's industrial days. Service is good, but seemed slow when we were there.

I LOVE Later Alligator. I've been there several times, and have never had a bad meal. The food is unique and tasty. Last night was no exception. The service was friendly, and the food was amazing. I had a savory chicken crepe that was delightful, but the true heart of the meal was dessert. The table enjoyed a delicious crepe stuffed with a sweet cream and covered in fresh berries and Nutella. I've never seen a dish disappear so quickly in my life! Add in the unique beer selection and an eclectic decor featuring vintage Wheeling memorabilia and you have a true gem on your hands!

Agree very much so with Jimmy J's post, we must have had the same waitress. Went there on a Saturday evening, place was not crowded at all. One of the staff had to alert our waitress that we were there after we were seated for a long time. We ordered our drinks, then after a long time our appetizer and food. We got two different crepes which were okay, the only good thing about mine was really the marinated chicken which was very tasty. We asked for our check and the waitress said she'd bring it over. Well you can guess it took another long while, we got fed up and decided to just pay at the register, which we had to wait again until they got the check from the waitress, but guess what? our waitress finally came to the register and asked us if we were sure if she didn't give it to us because she couldn't find it ?? I just shook my head in disbelief and didn't say a word. As the other lady at the register tried to recreate our check, our waitress turns up again with our check in hand miraculously - voila! I don't recommend trying here unless you can be assured you get a better wait staff, good luck.

This was a great choice for local fare for a lunch date. The food was really tasty. The wife had a wrap that she loved and I had the guac all day crepe. It was all really tasty and good. Recommend this place for anyone stopping in wheeling.

Food was surprisingly good considering this place was in Wheeling, West Virginia. My wife and I stopped while heading to Pittsburgh to do a show. They had crepes out the ass. Crepes stuffed with crepes and then some pretty funky cold medina ass sandwich offerings. We enjoyed what we ate, mine was a crepe with cheese and pesto. Review would have been 5 stars but the food took a long time and the server did not come back to check on us once. She seemed like someone that had waited tables there because the place is run by her family but she really would rather be a roadie for Melissa Etheridge or some shit.

I gave this place one star because the waitress was not completely terrible. As for the "food".......where to begin? I ordered a crepe that was supposed to have a savory filling, something called "See Sam Run". I received a thin pancake having no discernable flavor of its own (indeed, it resembled more a pancake than a crepe) that was partially filled with a meager mixture of spinach and a white cheese of indeterminate origin with a few scraps of what appeared to be either farm raised or canned salmon. This mess had been suggested by my dinner companion. I don't hold it against them and immediately forgave them in my heart for leading me here. This pancake roll (I can't call it a crepe) was accompanied by a handful of spring mix (commercially available as such from any vendor) that was dressed with an adequate but forgettable viniagrette. I felt I should try another "crepe" fr two reasons. First, I wanted to give the kitchen a second chance. Second, I needed a second because the See Sam Run was barely the size of a modest appetizer. So, throwing caution to the winds I ordered a Lemon "crepe". Again, I received a pancake only this time it was flat (unrolled), had been drizzled with lemon juice and sprinkled with sugar. It would have been acceptable at half the price. As for atmosphere, the chairs were uncomfortable, the tables tiny and many of the surfaces (ledges, counters, etc.) were grimy. My companion assured me that this place is really popular. I can't see how unless people that come here have never had a real crepe made by someone who cares about quality. Avoid.

Went in because of the reviews in Yelp. It was a Thursday night around 7:30 pm and felt like they were pushing us out as they started getting ready to close at around 8:30. While the server was attentive the food was ok. I ordered a cup of French onion soup that came out so cold that the cheese wasn't even melted. Probably could be a 4 star any other time of the day. Cold soup on a 50 degree day it's just unacceptable.

I love this place! Notable: - I'm pretty sure it's the only place in town you're finding a crepe. - Dog Friendly (!!) so important to me when the weather is nice and this is the only establishment in Wheeling I've found that lets you bring your pooch to sit with you outside (insert side-eye to Uncle Pete's here.) - Mondays and Tuesdays they have wine specials - Super cute decor. I will update more as needed. I've probably been to this place 4 times and I really liked their spinach salad (although I'm surprised to see it on the menu in the middle of winter?) and their Wilbur Goes to Venice crepe, also good!

Driving to Lewisburg, WV in July 2012. Had my son give me the run-down of the lunch options on Yelp. We settled on Later Alligator. Healthy, good food. Busy place, but they managed to seat us right away. Warm, comforting food and decor. Had sandwiches that were fabulous.

Note: I did this review on 12/29/12 and accidently posted on my husband's Yelp page. We discussed the restaurant as we sat there and agreed it had lovely service, very good food and really good booze and we found it warm and cozy. What puzzled us was the name of the restaurant (saw no ties to alligators), the choice of menu options (why crepes?) and the massive quantities of "Wheeling Steel" stuff - it makes zero sense thrown all together. On the other hand, we had a lively conversation about it while we ate - maybe that is the idea? So, here is my original review: We just walked in on a snowy night, hoping it didn't suck. WELL. It surpassed all expectations. It was a terrific little gem of a place, as a matter of fact. We were greeted promptly and smilingly and given a great booth by the faux fire. Drinks were delivered quickly and they had two of my husband's favorite beers, Chimay and Flying Dog Raging Bitch, for those who want to know. I had a lovely Pinot noir. Dinner was crepes, delicate and delicious. Mandalyn (our waitperson) said they'd bring anything we wanted for the kids, even if it wasn't on the menu. Amazing!! Son ordered from the kid's menu and was perfectly happy. Daughter ordered an open face salmon with avocado and was happy too. Both had the "Pretty Please" dessert with 2 cherries and were delighted. It was a beautiful place with great service (thank you, Mandalyn, you are AWESOME!!) terrific food and drinks at a fair price. If you are a local, support them. If you are visiting, go for a terrific local experience.

We stopped on our drive from PA to CO for lunch. We enjoyed great sandwiches and wraps, with a friendly and attentive waitress. Our only disappointment was that we didn't have room for sweet crepes after eating our fill.

Dinner for 4. Slight wait. Ambience is great! Started with hummus platter with toasted pita points. That was good but you always need to request more pita for the hummus provided (which isn't a complaint). Ordered a sweet and a savory crepe which they are known for. Both were tasty and not overfilling. Apple peanut salad with curry dressing was also a hit. The fruit and peanut combined wonderfully with the spice of the curry! Raisins too. Last item ordered, French Dip, a more classic item but was gobbled up just as quickly! Had a local seasonal ale which was delicious. Coffee came in a single serve French press which was adorable! Server very friendly. Definitively recommend and will certainly be back! ~Patricia

First try. Had been put off by the reviews denouncing their service. Busy place for lunch on a November Wednesday. Service was solid. Waitress even brought some shredded Monty-jack cheese to sprinkle over my stuffed pepper soup. She said that she liked cheese on hers so she brought some out for mine. That's good service. The soup was all I had. It was not fantastic, but good. Could have used more blended seasoning. Will try again for a dinner.

This is quite the nifty spot! I went there to eat one day, I am very new to the area, and I decided I wanted to try an entree crepe and a dessert crepe. I really shouldn't have! Goodness!! I left there stuffed to the gills! Anyway, I went there for coffee a couple weeks later. They have the BEST coffee around town! You can order traditional brew or French press. I love French press coffee, so it was a score!!! I was so happy! Also, the ambiance is fantastic. If you go there, just take a walk around the joint, you will be entertained! It is fun, it is hip and the staff is fantastic! They are genuine and friendly there, from the wait staff to the kitchen. The peeps in the kitchen love food, so the food is going to be good! Thanks, and later alligator!

Bit of a let down the second time around. We went out of our way to re-visit Later Alligator more than 2 years after our maiden voyage.... Perhaps it was me building this place into a shrine in my mind, or perhaps their service levels have slid, but either way I was dissapointed. While the food was still decent (they even made the kids sandwiches in little fish shapes), the service was ABISMAL, I mean really bad. I will give credit to our server, who was pregnant and working, but as a patron, please don't make me wait 20 minutes for a drink refill. We ordered our lunch, it was not busy, there is no reason our food should have taken more than 30 minutes to prepare and yet it did. Please Alligator, if you're reading, improve your service levels - your food quality and imagination is there, but your wait staff clearly isn't.

We were passing on the highway near Wheeling on our way from Pennsylvania to Dayton. As it was lunch time, we decided to check Yelp for help. Later Alligator sounded cute and was the one place that has a good number of reviews - all positive. I was immediately taken by the cute alligator wearing red tennis shoes on the outside window. The inside was nice, decorated with an old tin ceiling and mementos from the local steel industry. Our server, Rachel, was extremely friendly and very efficient. We enjoyed the savory crepes for lunch and a fruit crepe (full of fresh berries) for dessert. I honestly enjoyed my crepe for than one I'd had a few days earlier at a famous french cafe in the NY area. Highly recommended!

Love this place, the food is always fresh. Our first time here the owner served us and kept apologizing because she claimed to be profoundly hard of hearing and her hearing aid batteries had died. I couldn't write a better story. She's a lovely woman and hugely entertaining. The crepes are perfect, I've tried six or seven at this point. I love that their vegetables are fresh. I ordered the guac around the clock and was pleasantly surprised to find natural avocado instead of that neon green preserved garbage most restaurants use.

Everything here is delicious and the atmosphere is great. The staff is friendly and efficient, and I have yet to order something I haven't liked. If you pass through Wheeling you have to try this place out. You won't regret it.

I went to Later Gator recently around 9 AM (when they're just serving as a coffee shop) and brought my laptop, in order to get some work done. I ordered a croissant and coffee. Eventually, the owner came over and said that she needs me to leave when it got busy around lunchtime. I told her that I planned to stay and order lunch, and she STILL said she'd need me to leave. I was pretty annoyed, so I planned on leaving, but the waitresses (who were attentive and very nice) said they were embarrassed at how rude she was and that I was welcome to stay for lunch. It's not like I'd ordered ONLY coffee all day or that there was ever anyone standing around waiting for a table. Nobody else was on a laptop or using the WiFi either. On top of that, I've never been all that impressed with the food. I'll admit it's one of the few interesting menus in the Wheeling area, but I've had a lot of items there over the years that are pretty mediocre. Ironically, the day I was asked to leave was the first time I'd eaten something there that was actually pretty good (I think it might have been called The BVD) So mostly mediocre food + rude owner = not worth it. I won't be going back.

Please support EXCELLENT small business like this. Great food, very friendly service. All of the produce is fresh from local farms- this restaurants likes to promote and support other local small businesses. I am a big tea drinker, they had a great selection of Republic of Tea options. Get crowded so might have a wait at lunch / dinner times. They have a small bar with a few stools. I ordered the See Sam Run crepe with alaskan salmon, spinach, feta, cream cheese. It was so delicious. Food came out quick, the check was not bad. My crepe was about $10. This is a great little gem in Wheeling, WV. I would frequent this place if it was in my home town.

A Yelp victory! We were driving back from Ohio to Pittsburgh and knew we would be hungry somewhere around Wheeling. A quick search later, we drove a minute or two off 70 and walked in from the cold rain to this adorably decorated, welcoming spot! The space is bright and kitschy, adorned with Wheeling Steel and other down-home, nostalgic goods. Divided into rooms, the restaurant manages to feel rather homey in spite of its size. We had a big variety of food - I had a sandwich (turkey with brie and apple butter - mmm), and my friends had a crepe (with a starter of the tomato basil soup topped with puff pastry) and steak salad respectively. We all enjoyed what we got quite a bit, and delcious craft brews for $3.25 only sweetened the deal. There was a bit of a wait that Saturday night. There was a film premiere at the theater across the street that night and the staff was, by their own admission, overwhelmed by all the customers. As we were not in a hurry, we were glad to see such a great little spot humming with activity -- and I'm sure that, on any normal night, service is likely fine. They were all in good spirits and checked on us several times, once we were seated. I can't wait to stop here again, to rest and fortify myself on another long drive.

Busy on a Saturday at 2 pm. Service could be better. Inattentive. However, food was fresh and tasty, with lots of creative options. We'll definitely be back to try other menu items.

Decor is awesome. Cozy and warm this place feels comfortable from the time you walk in. Soups are amazing and sandwiches were some of the best I've ever had. Great beer selection not your run of the mill selection but very nice. Prices are crazy cheap. Two soups, two sandwiches, a tea and a beer only 30 bucks. The owner is friendly and talked to us for a while giving us the rundown on what was going on in town. Definitely coming back.

Very good food straight from their own garden! Yes, that is right.. the vegetables and tomatoes were so rich and tasty, I knew they weren't store bought. I asked them if they had a garden.. and they do. To me that is an extra, big bonus star. My wife and I accidently stumbled in here on our road trip to Boston and both of us were happily surprised with a really tasty lunch. We had fresh garden vegetables, hummus, and chicken sandwich on a buttery croissant. To be honest, this food was better than most of what we found in Boston. So helpful hint: Eat here during the summer harvest and get those garden veggies.

Thanks to YELP, we found this little spot just off of the highway for an early lunch before heading into NYC. Don't miss out--hand made foods--crepes that are whimsical and delicious. The tomato basil soup comes with an tall and tasty puff pasty cap on it, sort of looks like a little chef's toque, but truly delish. The neighborhood is fun, recently gentrified. Easy to park and easy to get back on the road--enjoy!

Great food and service when I met a friend here for lunch recently. I was in town visiting family and had never been here before. I was very impressed by not only the quality of food but by the munu, which is very unique for the area. I had the Mae West which was a panini style sanwich with mozzarella, tomato & pesto on garlic bread. It came with blue tortilla chips and I ordered an iced tea to drink. The ingredients were fresh and the sandwich came out piping hot and delicious. I will be stopping here again the next time I am in town.

Stopped here on a long roadtrip to escape standard interstate fare. This place has a nice indie coffee shop vibe--part artsy college hangout, part rust belt nostalgia. Staff was super friendly, and our food was delicious (I recommend their salmon+avocado+lime 'Upstream' sandwich).

I found this place using Yelp while on a road trip with my family (husband and 2 year-old son). We tend to eat local organic foods and prefer non-chain restaurants when we go out. I found this place during a search because they have one organic beer available. The crepe I had was ok--it was just a bit bland. I think I'd try something else next time (and yes, I'd give this place another try). My husband seemed to like his crepe--it was one of the many chicken crepes offered. I don't eat chicken so I had a lot less to choose from even though the crepe list was long. A vegetarian might have a hard time, but we didn't try asking for a custom crepe. The service was awesome! They were so nice and super kid friendly. They brought out little orange slices for my son (I think they might have been canned which I'm not crazy about, but it was great none the less). They also had a little cup with a lid and curly straw for him and fun little plastic animal-shaped utensils that we got to keep. They were so attentive to my son's needs and had a fairly good children's menu to choose from.

Like so many other reviewers here, we stopped in on Friday night on our way to Pittsburgh. When we arrived the place was totally empty, and the staff was sitting around shooting the breeze. Unfortunately, they kept up that same attitude the whole time we were there as the place got busier, and the service we received was lackadaisical at best. This would have been ok if the food was stellar, but it was only so-so. I ordered the Sophia and Carlo crepe, and what I got was missing the marinara sauce component, so it was a little bit dry and uninteresting. My husband had the Club Car sandwich, which was really huge, but the bread was so dry he cut his mouth on it! We had a dessert crepe, the Pucker Up, and that was pretty good. I'd say we won't be back, but you know we won't anyway, so I guess it doesn't really matter!

Fabulous crepes! Both savory and sweet! Really good soups! A decent iced tea (Which is harder to find than you would think.) and a cute little cupcake of a waiter who was helpful and went out of his way for us! I wish we lived near this place- No - I don't want to live in Wheeling - I wish this place was near where we live.

After hearing about one of West Virginia "101 most unique places to eat" from a friend who's been there a handful of times, we decided to make a day trip to Wheeling - 1 hour and 15 minutes away from where we live - and included Later Alligator as part of it. Great experience - very cozy, somewhat kitschy atmosphere; friendly customer service; and above all, delicious food! The three of us stuck with the entree crepes and an organic beer, with tomato bisque soup to start. Every dish we had was wonderful. Definitely will return.

Thanks to Yelp reviews, I stopped here with my mom and sisters on our way from Columbus to Pittsburgh. We weren't disappointed! The food was great (crepes, crepes CREPES!), and the service was solid and friendly. We'll be back if and when we travel I-70 east.

Found this place via Yelp. Loved it!!! So, so, so yummy! Great option for a "non-fast food, non-greasy, not just a sandwich" meal that is just off the highway during our drive from Columbus to DC. Go with a partner so you can share a couple crapes. Loved the Crape Escape and Last Tango. Wish they were open on Sunday so we could go back! :-)

This is definitely one of those hidden gems that you would never find just wandering through town, a big shout out to my fellow yelpers for getting this publicity! The wife and I were driving from PA to IL and this was the true oasis in the desert of the rust belt. We walked into this cozy little place about 6 on a Saturday and they didnt have a big crowd, so I was a little concerned. Plus, its in the 'downtown' area that looks pretty shut down on a saturday. We sat down and were quickly greeted by our waitress who gave us good suggestions and flirted with my 20 month old son, or he her....but I digress. After she brought our drinks we ended up getting my son a 1/2 sandwich which had plenty of meat, though maybe a bit light on the avocado. The wife and I went for 2 crepes, one savory, one sweet. The savory was a turkey, brie, deliciousness and the sweet a blueberry explosion! They were sufficiently full of ingredients, and we agreed that it was the right amount of food to feel full, but not like you just gorged yourself. We ended the meal splitting a brown cow which hit the spot! We agreed that if we lived in town, this would be a regular place for sunday after church or a night out since they do have beer and wine. The 5 star may be a bit over the top, but come on, this is a crepe place in West Virginia, they gotta get extra credit for that!

We were in town from Cleveland and I looked over the menu and was in love with the place, but was skeptical because of all the negative service remarks here on Yelp. I had the tuna sandwich and my gf had the salmon wrap and we shared the potato salad, tomatoe bisque and a desert crepe. The entire meal was amazing even our service. You would be hard pressed to find a place equivalent to this in any metro area. Great job guys...I will stop in anytime I am within 50 miles!

Wheeling desperately needs Later Alligator. This little cafe has the most extensive list of crepes I have ever seen, from the sweetest to the most savory. They're one of the few places in Wheeling you can find a decent cup of coffee, and you can get it in a french press! Oh, the glory. Don't forget to try the tomato soup with puff pastry!

Cool atmosphere, original menu selections and quality beer (bottles). Not your typical Wheeling eatery (fried food and stool) Has a Brooklyn or San Francisco feel to it. Pulled pork was probably the best ive ever had. Only complaint is the food took too long (understandable in some cases but how bout a small portion of those blue corn chips and maybe mango salsa, just a suggestion) and didn't get the feeling the sever gave a shit. Recommend something... but I'm definately glad I found this place

Enjoyed a great lunch plus very yummy dessert on a road trip. Savory crepe, good portion for one hungry person and nutella-berry-crepe for dessert. Fresh ingredients, made to order. Why would stop any where else? Need to be more places like this. Homestyle. Great service, also good espresso.

Traveling through, I used Yelp to look for restaurants and this one was a great lunch spot. Extremely cute, good food, good service. The menu is not your usual stuff, mostly crepes, lots of other choices including beers that most don't carry , such as Chimay. Also easy on easy off of I-70, I strongly recommend.

My salad was good, but service was lacking. We had to scout out our own napkins and silverware (after the server dropped the food at our table & left without even looking or asking if we needed anything else). We were also only given one glass of water between the two of us (& I had to ask for a refill). Oh, one of the staff walked by our area & belched. If it hadn't been for the decent food I would give this place only 1 star.

This is the best restaurant in wheeling! It's the kind of thing that you don't usually see in such a small area. The atmosphere is unique. The walls are decorated with antique magazines and pieces if wheeling's past. The staff there is so friendly! The food is also amazing! I always order the Crepe Escape which is a crepe with rosemary chicken and some cheese. There are also caramelized onions which I choose to leave it out. My family also loves the pesto chango crepe, the who puts baby in a corner crepe, and the humus. Also, if you have children, they have a children's menu that includes things like grilled cheese. The best part about going there are the desert crepes! I order The Last Tango. It includes fresh seasonal berries, Nutella, and homemade whipped cream! Don't worry, if you don't like crepes, there are also lots of salads and sandwiches to order. I highly recommend this place! Here's a quick tip: with parties of four or more, they ask that you make a reservation. They do fill up quickly, so I recommend reservations even with less than four, but especially if you have a large party.

Probably one of the most original and interesting restaurants in Wheeling. Go for Sat or Sun brunch or during the day for some great sandwiches. I love the Mae West. The crepes are delicious too!
