I went back to Shepherdstown WV because last time I was there, I tried the Stone Soup Bistro and I loved it, but this time I went it was closed )-: So we decided to go to the Press Room. The place is nice, it has brick walls, with nice pictures, the tables are a bit close to each other but still cozy! When we first got there we were ask if we had a reservation which we had not, but still were seated in a nice table close to the window. The server was a nice young man with a nice attitude, we proceed to order appetizer, I had the beet salad and that's exactly what it was a nice fresh beet salad, my husband ordered the sweet corn and chowder , which was also good, my sister order a salad that was fresh. As we were waiting for the entrees we noticed that many people came in ordering a table and they were told that there was a long wait for tables, it really didn't seem like that to me, perhaps b/c the place is very calm, the servers are not rushing you to order and eat b/c you want your table! We order the salmon with peas and potatoes and it was ok, look pretty but the flavor was just ok, my man ordered the steak and guess what?? You got it! it was plain and ok! And I order the chicken with pasta and it was very greasy. I guess what we like best were the desserts but still not worth the drive. I now have learn my lesson next time I'll go to Shepherdstown, I'll call ahead of time and go to my favorite place STONE SOUP BISTRO

Wonderful ambiance, but appetizer, pasta and chicken meal were terrible. Chicken was tasteless and seemingly boiled, delivered on a dish swimming in water. It was moist, tender, and tasteless. The pasta was the same... Tasteless. Perhaps it is because I am Italian and expect the taste of Parmesan Cheese to mingle with pasta. My son described it as tasteless and gross, he felt it was as though it was warmed in the microwave as leftovers. Perhaps that is what happened since it was a Sunday afternoon. However, I wish I had the nerve to send it back... now that I look back upon the meal; it was almost insulting. I should of asked for Parmesan Cheese, at least. The only thing that was delicious was the bread slices they delivered 1 slice at a time. The bread was delicious. However, it was odd to have plain EVOO without any spices mixed with it, to dip. However, I won't take points off of the bread w/ EVOO alone, it was delicious....

Very good food, reasonable prices, good menu choices for vegetarians

This place is alright. The staff gives a little too much attitude for a place in West Virginia. The baked brie and drinks are fantastic though. If you're younger, your service will probably suffer a great deal as the mood of this place caters more to the older generations (although they should realize that younger people probably tip more) Great for awkward first dates!

Very nice atmosphere, delicious food, but perhaps not the quality of service one expects at this price point. Still a very nice evening.

We have been going to the Press Room four or five times a year for a few years and we think the kitchen is wonderful. I have never had a meal that was less than great. Sometimes the service is a bit slow, especially getting you started with drinks, but I think this is the management under staffing. My biggest complaint, and it isn't a deal breaker, is that we have requested that they invest in a bottle of Hendrick's gin about twelve times, assuring them that we alone would order to pay for the bottle, and each time we are told they will, only to find they never have on the next visit. In a world of wine drinkers, I can understand why they are perhaps a little laxidasical about the fine points of cocktails, but since we started making our requests, Hendrick's has become pretty mainstream. We've been to places that were pretty humble and yet still stocked it at their bar. That is our only issue - otherwise, the food, the bread, the environment as a whole are all very nice.

We wanted to find a great place to take my in-laws (one of whom is a pastry chef) for my mother-in-law's birthday. After reading reviews we decided to try this place. The decor is very cozy and down to earth. We were seated at a comfortable big booth, although the non-booths had very comfy looking black chairs. I might ask for one of those tables next time. The wine list was very detailed. They had a gruner veltliner and a chenin blanc on their list. The reds were more standard, but not your typical wineries which was nice. We ordered the calamari which was done to perfection in a garlic butter sauce. The calamari was not fried, so they can be rubbery if done right, but the chef hit it on the nose. The red peppers were a nice pairing for the dish as well. I had the pork milanese which I was very impressed with. The greens were more unique than at most restaurants. The sides, sauces, and garnishes were beautifully presented and tasted fantastic. My husband has the scallops which he said were also cooked to perfection. My in laws had the steak which was done exactly how my father in law wanted and was served with a very interesting yet tasty sauce. My mother in law was happy with her balsamic glazed salmon. Again everything was presented beautifully and delicious. We then just had to try their lavendar creme brulee. This met my mother in law's high expectations of desserts. The lavendar permeated the dessert very subltely and the creme brulee was incredibly light and creamy. It was probably one of the best creme brulees I had ever had in my life. My husband and I felt we had a quality meal for an excellent price. Our whole meal was very reasonable considering we had 4 glasses of wine, an appetizer, 4 entrees, and 2 desserts. The chef at the Press Room obviously takes pride in his work and is doing an incredible job. This place is such a gem in a small West Virginian town. We will definitely come back when we come down to visit.

What an elegant experience for us! The atmosphere demure and sophisticated, the service attentive and gentile, the food delicious and impressive. Bon Appétit

Went for Sunday brunch, and it was the best meal we had in Shepherdstown, hands down. The seasonal fruit was exquisite - it was cantaloupe, peaches, and blueberries that day. We also tried the gazpacho, the omelet special, and the French toast. Everything was great. And our waitress was knowledgeable in helping my gluten-free date navigate the menu. Will definitely go back. Also, good air conditioning!

The smoked salmon appetizer is to die for. Sweet corn and clam chowder is very hearty and the scallops with mushroom risotto is awesome. This is a don't miss dining experience if you're in the area. Fantastic food, superb service, and awesome ambience.

This is our new go-to place in Shepherdstown. The menu offers a variety that ranges from the sophisticated to the ordinary and all of it cooked correctly and served in a gentile atmosphere by a wait staff that knows their stuff. Highly recommended.

Saturday 23 May 2015 - a delicious meal. Drinks from the bar were among the best anywhere. The Manhattan was generous and made with perfect proportions. Service was excellent. Our waiter made great recommendations about wine and food both. The Gorgonzola custard appetizer was light, unique and delicious. The gazpacho was perfectly seasoned. Pasta dishes were made with house made pasta noodles and cooked to perfection. The pappardelle pasta with fresh mushrooms was wonderful. We can highly recommend the Press Room.

This might be the finest cuisine in town. So many irresistible menu choices, and the recitation of daily specials is a marvel of theatrical skill. I have narrowed down my favorites some by resisting imported fish and meat, for political, not flavor, reasons. One of these days I'll go and just get dessert so I can enjoy the deliciousness all the more.

Really great food. If you are looking for a quaint upscale restaurant in an adorable little town this in it! Duck confit was so good and the soup of the day was made with fresh local produce. This was a great find!

Stopped in yesterday for a drink around 8:00pm. Sat at bar. We were the only people at the bar. The bartender was the coldest bartender a bar could have. He didn't ask us if we wanted menus, something to eat and when we were finished our drinks, he didn't ask if we wanted another. He didn't greet us when we sat down and after we ordered he never said another word to us. I even tried to start a conversation by asking if he recently worked at another local rest that recently closed. He responded 'yes'. This rest has great food but they better get another bartender. We won't be back until they do.

Oh yeah. Incredible find off the beaten-metro-path in Shepherdstown. We didn't have any trouble getting a table on a Wed night; but rumor is it's hard to get in on a Friday or Saturday night. We had 5 of us for a business dinner. Among the dishes ordered: soup of day (sweet onion); roasted beet salad with arugula, blue cheese, balsamic vinaigrette; london broil; cassoulet with a side of balsamic radicchio; rockfish with spinach, white beans, tomatoes, sausage; and salmon. Maybe the kitchen was just running flat out on passion tonight - just like their underdog Mountaineers are right now against Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl's first half. But everything was extraordinarily, surprisingly good. The wine list was short, but sufficient. Only one bottle over $50; most were $15-30. There were some boring, hi distro (but good-value) supermarket wines; but there were also some more interesting choices as well. Our favorite was a Grenache-based Priorat. This place was great. I'll be back.

This place is a 5 star for me. Of course I am bias because I eat here 3, 4 and sometime 5 days a week when I'm in town. Both food and service is always a notch above.

Very tiny place with nice decor and exposed brick walls. Reminded us of a small restaurant in Italy, especially the way the menu was divided up and the bread is served with olive oil only (unless you ask for butter). The sweet corn and clam chowder was excellent, the pasta with shrimp was good but lacked seasoning, and my friends paella looked awesome but I didn't taste it. Packed on a Saturday night but we were able to get a late reservation that day, and although we couldn't get seated when we arrived 15 minutes early, they were ready for us right on time. Worth at least trying if you're in town. Service is a little relaxed (slow) so you have to not be in a hurry to enjoy.

I want to go back. I was prepared to be dazzled, and I wasn't. It was good enough to warrant a second chance, though. The decor is very cool. The service was pretty darn good. There were bright spots in the evening. I got the veal chop, which was on special. It was good -- didn't knock my socks off, but it was tasty. I also had a split pea soup that tasted like old fashioned beans and ham. Again, it was good -- it just didn't wow me. My wife had a seafood pasta that looked really good. I tasted a shrimp and it was great! She also had the clam and corn chowder, and was very pleased with both dishes. I also ordered the pate. Again, it was okay, but I've had better. Three stars because my wife enjoyed her meal more than I did. I really want to go back and try a pasta dish (and see if I can get this place up to four).

My husband and I just ate here for the first time. I had heard good reviews from friends and gave it a shot. wine list was short, we shared an appetizer , my husband ordered the lamb and I had a special of the night that was a mushroom tortellini. Then we finished the meal with a lavender creme brulee. we are looking forward to our next visit

On our way to DC, we spent the night with a friend who lives in Martinsburg WV, but loves Shepherdstown, 20 minutes away. She likens it to Columbus' Short North. She made reservations for us here, and we had an amazing meal, including wonderful service. The atmosphere is lovely. We shared a bottle of wine, and we all had fish dishes with asparagus and mashed potatoes. We even had dessert (the server didn't ask if we saved room for dessert, but instead just put the dessert menus down in front of our faces. That's the way to do it.). I shared the Lavender Creme Brulee with our friend. Truly one of the best desserts I've ever had. My husband had something gooey with chocolate and caramel. He said it was incredible. Hoping to come back next visit.

Best sea bass ever! The four of us had the best sea bass we've ever eaten, right here at the Press Room. A two-inch thick cut of fish cooked to perfection--tender and juicy meat with crispy skin over a bed of spinach surrounded by an orange reduction. Inexpensive but decent wine list. Service was extremely attentive, albeit delivered by a clearly inexperienced and nervous student. Only criticism was a mussel appetizer consisting of minuscule specimens that provided only a modicum of mussel taste. Otherwise a nice evening in a lovely setting with great food.

The dinner experience last night was simply awesome! We were a party of five and everyone at the table loved their food, including the chef in our group. Sometimes it's the details that win you over. For example, my husband I shared a beet salad. We each got a small plate that was very nicely presented. AND the salad tasted wonderful. And their homemade bread is a dream. The staff was attentive, yet not overbearing. We've included this restaurant on our list of favorites and would even consider making an extra trip to Sheperdstown for a dinner night out.

The Press Room is by far the best restaurant in Shepherdstown. Whatever the special is, it's usually incredible. Last time I was here I had the rack of lamb with mint pesto, cooked to the chef's preference, a perfect medium. That being said, I know that the head chef/owner's idea of medium may be rarer than some people's so adjust accordingly. Fresh and amazing seafood, solid bartenders, really good steaks, attentive service, but their new-ish "once slice of bread at a time" policy is a little odd. And actually, considering how much you will pay for pad thai or pizza down the block, this place is a pretty damn good value. Most of the portion sizes are good but if you entree just doesn't do the trick, you're in luck because the desserts are fantastic. Every time I come here I want to order about nine different things off the menu, but luckily a soup, two salads, two apps, two entrees, and two desserts (an excessive amount of food for two people) can be had for around $100 plus drinks and tip Oh yeah, and the Sunday brunch is awesome too!!

First time here. We were look for some good Italian food in this small town and actually found some. Ordered the baked brie and calimari appitizers, both were very good. Im picky about calimari, it was breadrd very nice and not overcooked. The service was fast and friendly. The prices were fair, nothing extreme. The inside of the establishment appeared very clean and nicely decorated. Quite atmosphere around 3pm on a Saturday was nice. Their complimentary bread is amazing. Our main dish was the pasta and sausage, it was huge. After the appitizers, we split the pasta three ways, that was perfect. I've heard from a few people that I talked to, that The Press Room is the best restaurant in this town. We had a great visit this time and we'll be back. Highly recommended. Hope this helps.

Very disappointing. Wife and I ordered the same entree, scallops, took one bite and sent them back. Then tried a corned beef panini got fatty meat with lots of gristle, again sent back. Wife got eggs florentine that was okay. I've had very good food here before, but maybe the chef was having an off day.

A pleasant spot that gives attention to the details. The portions are ample, and the tasty food is well presented. The service is attentive. As a vegetarian, I was disappointed that the butternut squash ravioli, one of only two menu options, is no longer available. I got by with just an appetizer and a salad, but the rest of my table was well pleased with their entrees. As someone else noted, the "one piece of bread" policy, delivered without butter or olive oil, is a bit odd. If you are an omnivore with money to spend on fine dining, The Press Room should make you happy.

Not only was the food great, the service was excellent. I am gluten free by medical necessity and they were willing and able to accommodate me. They were extremely helpful in letting me know what was safe and they made some changes to a dessert item so that I could eat it. We had the sautéed calamari, beer salad, tomato mozzarella salad (mozzarella made in house), the seafood paella and the duck. Gelato for dessert. I would give the food a 4 star and the service a 6, so that's why I'm giving them a 5. If you have dietary restrictions, you can count on them!

  • michael r.

My friend and I ate there last night expecting great things. At the end of the meal, we were sorely disappointed. The service was excruciatingly slow. It took 20 minutes to bring out the calamari, which was bland They served bread that was cold. We waited another 35 minutes to bring our main course from the time we finished our appetizers. And the bill? We waited almost 15 minutes when the server collected our credit cards. Expect a lot of waiting. Such a disappointing experience.

My girlfriend and I stumbled upon this little gem. They were kind enough to squeeze us in without reservations. Great service, cozy atmosphere/ambience. Penne with Salmon was excellent. Only to be bested by the Hanger Steak with mashed potatoes. Definitely will be back and I highly recommend this place.

You really need to get rid of the smart aelic who answers the phone. Rather than taking my request to have our friend be our waitress, he turned us away. We have been going there for many years. All he had to do was say I will try. How would it look if we went there and she saw us paired up with someone else? I am sure she would be hurt. This restaurant has gotten to be very good over the years, but not worth my time tomorrow, and probably not for a while.

What a great place to spend a evening! The bar tender is excellent. Food is fabulous! The Lamb shank was the best as well as the service. Great place to go in Shepherdstown. Can't wait to visit in the spring. I would like to know when I can get the fried soft crab with the egg benedict in the summer. Thanks for a great time!!! Oh yea, the best raw oysters!!

Sit at the bar if there are no tables! Plenty of space, and Tarah is friendly and knowledgeable about pairings. Not a ton of vegetarian options, but what they have are well prepared and food-centric, not health-centric. Don't miss lavender creme brulee!

The reservation was for 1915, we were seated at 1930. An hour and ten minutes later, 2040, the wrong order came up. Twenty minutes after being promised the missing entre was en route we left the restaurant. NOT the place you can count on for a birthday or special occasion. Customers beware, you have a choice, this one is not worth your wait. The service is unreasonably horrid.

My friend has the owner as a client so we decided to head over and check it out. WONDERFUL experience. Ever gone to a restaurant, listened to all of the specials and completely want each and every one of them? Great service. Loved the ambiance and the food was superior. We had pecan trout, the veal, the french casserole.... best meal in over a year!

My wife and I decided to celebrate our 1-year anniversary here. We now regret that decision. Many things went wrong, right from arrival (our "reserved" table wasn't ready so we were sent to the bar where we were totally ignored), but reflecting on the entire evening, overall we didn't feel "taken care of." --and isn't that why any of us go out to eat ... especially to a seemingly "nice" spot? My wife's NY strip had to be sent back twice and never did reach "medium." As blood pooled on the plate, the owner (without apology, alternative suggestion or so much as a "Happy Anniversary") tried to convince us that the steak was indeed medium. While my Chilean sea bass was really good, my wife's entire meal was awful -- an undercooked underwhelming steak, a not-so-generous 2 spoonfuls of boring mashed potatoes and some incredibly sour greens. When we brought these things to the attention of our server (when she finally came over), she had absolutely nothing to say or offer. She ran off and we didn't see her (or the owner) again until it was time to drop the check ... an unpleasant 20 minutes later. I wrote a note to the server that said, "A little communication goes a long way. You can't go silent and ignore your guests when things go wrong." Simply terrible.

A fabulous restaurant! I loved the relaxed and cozy atmosphere of this thoroughly gourmet dining experience. Nestled on Main Street in Shepherdstown, WV, it's the perfect spot for dinner with your favorite person or group of friends. I have enjoyed dinner for two and a night on the town with my gal pals, each occasion was memorable and delicious. It's a must stop for me whenever I am in the area. Best White Russian I have ever had, best Tiramisu, best Pear and Cheese Salad...just to name a few...

I like unique places, and this isn't extremely unique (so it's rated a little lower), but it's a nice restaurant with great service, good food and a wonderful location. I had a half dozen PE Island oysters, smoked salmon and a yummy linguine dish (that tasted just as good the next morning for breakfast!). If you're looking for something a little more formal & upscale (OK, and "older"), this is the place to go.

We've been going here for 3 years in a row when we visit the Antietam Battlefield in September. The seafood dishes are delicious. The wine list is great and the prices are very good. The staff is very friendly. We always end up closing out the place - and no one ever rushes us out.

I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner at The Press Room, from appetizers to dessert. The service was also wonderful, just the right pace. We didn't feel rushed or like we were waiting around at any point during the meal. For an appetizer, I shared the mussels. They were fantastic, served with spinach, tomatoes, and a delicious broth that you should use the toasted bread that comes with it (as well as their delicious table side served bread) to sop up every last drop! For my entree, I had the pasta primavera. The pasta was a perfect texture. The vegetables were fresh and perfectly cooked. The sauce was delicious and drenched over the pasta in the perfect amount, not overly dressed but certainly not lacking in flavor. For dessert, I had the tiramisu, which was delicious, but my favorite dessert at the table was the short cake my dad ordered. The lemon poppy seed biscuit is served with fresh berries and whipped cream. I can't wait to return for another delicious meal!

My boyfriend and I ended up here by accident and loved it. We didn't have reservations on a crowded Friday night but were told we could sit at the bar, which we did. It was small, quiet and we joined about half a dozen locals. Tarah the bartender was Friendly and very knowledgable about both the food and wine. All the food entrees we saw were beautifully prepared and the ones we tried tasted great too. The gazpacho was delicious with a spoonful of fresh basil on top. We also had mussels before the main dish. Our Saturday night was supposed to have been spent in Charles Town at the casino but after arriving there, neither my boyfriend nor I found the environment to our liking so we headed back to Sheperdstown and went to The Press Club two nights in a row. It was a good choice.

Genuinely disappointed. Took my girlfriend for a special occasion and after being ignored at our table for almost 10 minutes and discussing leaving, the waitress finally sauntered over to take our drink order, We should have left. They screwed up my vodka tonic by putting in soda water and after waiting another 5 minutes for the waitress to come back, I walked back to the bar to get it changed myself. I find our waitress sitting at the bar BSing with the bartender. When I ask him to give me a new drink he says "what's wrong with it?" I tell him there's soda water instead of tonic he says "no there's not". Wow, not the way to handle that. Amazingly, after he changes out my drink and start walking back to my table, I hear the waitress say "he said soda, not tonic". Having drank vodka tonics for 20 years and never once ordering soda, I found that odd, on top of the fact the bartender had just told me he had put tonic in. Had it not been a special occasion and our orders already in, I would have left at that point. Our food was mediocre at best and the service never got better. The waitress had an unreal attitude, very arrogant. That's unacceptable anywhere but in that town? Really? Maybe it was a bad night, but it was expensive for what it was and it sucked.

This was our first dinner in Shepherdstown and we will definitely be going back. We arrived to a full restaurant and chose to sit at the quaint bar away from the dining area. The bartender was a bit off-putting and we felt kind of invisible throughout the meal but we got over it. Not anyone's fault but there was also a crazy big party waiting for a table at the other end of the bar and they were so loud! The salads were great even though my Caesar was way over-dressed. The mussels appetizer was one thing I could go back for over and over. They. were. perfect. The pizza appetizer was average but I just took it for a swim in the mussel broth and that bumped it up a few notches :) Desserts were some of the best I have ever had. The Tiramisu was Top 5 material and the Panna Cotta (a first for me) with berries was crazy good! Next time I will make sure we sit in the dining room and probably not get the pizza. No matter, there were like 10 other dishes on the menu I can't wait to try. Great place. Go (with reservations on Friday and Saturday) and you won't be disappointed!

We came for the sunday brunch. The omelette was cooked perfectly. It is so easy to over cook eggs. I loved the fresh squeezed orange juice. The service was attentive without being overbearing.

Can't wait to come back here for another dinner! A local recommended this place and we were not disappointed. I had the mushroom paparadelle and my husband had the hangar steak...large portions and delicious flavors! Also a reasonable wine list that complements the food. Nice ambiance. We'll be back!

Went to dinner when traveling on business here- I must say, the meal was quite delish- we were here on a Monday night, I believe so it wasn't very crowded, but everything consumed was good to polite standards. The only thing is that the bar is a bit awkward and narrow, so not much room to move around when you are dining with a group. I ended up having the special of the evening which was quite tasty- it was a veal dish with lots of great veggies. Would def. stop back here if in the area...
