China Kitchen (or "Betty's" to frequent diners like us) is a Shepherdstown landmark. We have been customers for well over 20 years, so my love is deep for Betty & her husband!! They serve simple, satisfying, traditional home-cooked Chinese food. Our absolute favorites: Crispy Beef Pork (or chicken) Fried Rice Kung Pao Combination Pork in Black Bean Sauce Moo Shi Pork (or chicken) Hot & Sour Soup Beef Cho Cho Also their eggrolls & wonton soup are super delicious. Betty's is our local go-to-place for Chinese. We're always satisfied when we dine-in or order carry-out!!

I like this place, most of the time I get takeout though I like to dine in if I am looking for a more quiet, casual meal in Shepherdstown. My favorite things on the menu are the fish and black bean sauce, and the chicken and string beans (ask for it extra extra spicy). Overall, the food is pretty good though sometimes the quality is great and other times it seems seriously deficient. It's solid Chinese food for college kids, though there are safer options nearby if you're actually looking for a nice dinner out. 3.5 stars.

While attending Shepherd University, this became my place! China Kitchen is a great place with good food. The staff is very friendly and professional (family owned). I had a lot of night classes my last semester up there and I would always stop in town just to get China Kitchen before heading back to my dorm. It got so bad that when I walked into the restaurant the owner already knew my order! Also while waiting for my food she started talking to me, asking me my major and such, and taught me Chinese (counting 1-10). Ha, pretty cool. :) Can't wait to visit again! My favorites: Shrimp Lo Mein, Chicken and Broccoli and Steamed Dumplings! Also tried the Wonton Soup and Miso Soup!

Just a quaint local Chinese food restaurant. Not terribly busy on the night I dined which in some ways was a good thing after a long day. I was the only one seated in the restaurant. Other patrons (about 4) showed up for dining about 45 minutes into my meal. One person came in from outside for takeout pickup. Service was friendly. My meal was OK. Nothing terrible but nothing out of this planet. Just your standard Chinese fare. This restaurant was one of the very few open after 6 pm so I was grateful for that as I was in town only for a few hours waiting for a graduation ceremony to end at the university. I ordered Chicken with Cashew Nuts. It was just OK. The plate of chicken, I have to say, was **huge** compared to the very tiny little bowl of rice accompanying it. The rice proportion didn't seem right with just how much chicken they served me in one setting. Reasonable pricing.

Stopped here for lunch today. I ordered the General Tso's Chicken, which was very good. The chicken was prepared well and the sauce was more complex than I'm used to getting in this area; just the right amount of garlic with scallion and hot pepper with neither ingredient overpowering the other. I hope to come back here soon so I can try their Hunan beef.

Wow, how does this place stay in business? Maybe we caught it on a really bad night. We got takeout wonton soup, egg rolls and moo shu pork, and had to throw out the entire meal. Everything was overcooked and greasy. The soup was inedible. Absolutely disgusting. I rarely write a review on yelp but the food was so horrible I feel the need to warn everyone.

Listen, this is a really good Chinese restaurant, certainly as good or better than we have in Chinatown in DC. The restaurant itself is eclectic and the seating is close, something I normally don't like but for some reason, really don't mind when I eat here. They have a sushi bar, which, if you think about it, is kind of weird. It a territorial issue really. Anyway, we've never had the sushi there. We go to a Japanese place in Tyson's corner for that. The menu (We're back in Shepherdstown now, having left the Japanese sushi place behind us) is very large and the portion are very, very generous and the taste is wonderful. Don't ask the waiters anything because they don't know anything. They are usually kids from the local college and are clueless on the menu and I suspected several of them of not knowing where China is. I'd like to give them a pop quiz and find out if I'm right, but my wife won't let me do it. However the owner is usually behind the counter and she can help. The prices are very good, very reasonable especially in light of the amount of food they serve with each order. This is a happy, nice little place and I suggest you give it a try.

Fastest service I have EVER had. We were in and out in under 25 minutes! Two chicken dishes were superb with hot tea...very hot temp so fresh. Fast service! Would highly recommend the food!

I was not expecting great Chinese food in a small town in West Virginia, but this place was better than I expected. The menu was extensive and had quite a selection of dishes. There was also sushi on the menu (which I was really excited about even though I found it odd on a chinese menu) but we were told upon being seated that there was no sushi that night. Bummer. We ordered egg drop soup, lettuce wraps, shrimp & snow peas, and beef & broccoli. When the waitress brough our tea and water she also brought a bowl of friend wontons. Weird. Egg drop soup: bland, but okay Lettuce curls (wraps): filling - good! Lettuce - wilted Shrip & snowpeas: soso, the sauce was a little watery Beef & broccoli: This was the best dish we had! Food: Okay Service: Okay. Prompt, not very warm Value: Moderate Menu: GREAT selection

Let me start by saying that the hostess was very friendly and attentive. We were greeted and seated quickly and had water and menus in short order. The meal itself... Miso Soup= Watery, tasteless and served with stale fried noodles. We intended to order Sushi but were told that they were not serving it any longer-- apparently, it had been off the menu for a month though the menu still featured it. We ended up ordering Chinese-- my GF had "Shrimp and Scallops with Vegetables in special Sauce"....she said it wasn't bad but rather bland. I had General Tso's Chicken. The sauce was good but the chicken was way overcooked and dry. The broccoli was served separately and cold.

Good Chinese food for the area. Consistent too and reasonably priced. Can get crowded during lunch throughout the week, especially when the University is in session. Sushi not always available each day of the week. I've never been disappointed when eating here. Food is served quickly and take-out is never a wait either. Good place in She'town; better than A-Wok; the other Chinese restaurant in town.

We decided to grab Chinese before rafting on the Potomac, and were not dissapointed. The Hot and Sour soup was flavorful and was full of veggies, and my wife's egg drop soup was great, not bland the way many places make it. I had the Human beef lunch portion, it was spicy but not too much so. My son ordered Kung Pao, extra spicy, and was happy with it. We will definitely be back next time we're up there.

This was a nice find. We had gone to Shepherdstown to eat at the Thai restaurant across the street, but they were closed for a private party. I wasn't really into Chinese but we went here anyway. I was pleasantly surprised that their menu has a extensive choice of Chinese and sushi items. My kids shared sweet and sour shrimp which was very good and not done the typical fried in batter way. My wife and I had the sushi lunch specials that are served 11am until 4pm. They were an excellent value and very good sushi. The dining area is very pleasant. Shepherdstown is a college town and the clientele reflected this.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
