It's a little bit sad coming here. I'm told it was formerly a busy 24 hour roadside diner (now 6am-10pm), but it seems to have fallen victim to highway construction a la Disney's "Cars." We stopped by to get a bite on a weekend afternoon, and it was humid and warm in the dining room. I wasn't in the mood for anything heavy, and ordered a salad with chicken (see photo). Prices were cheap, and if I were hungry for diner food, I probably would have had a better experience. It sounds like breakfast may be the better time to check them out.

Having stayed overnight at a nearby hotel, I decided to walk over to this restaurant and have breakfast at the Mountaineer. This restaurant is no longer open 24 hours, but open from 6am-10pm on the early April morning that I ate here. Service was prompt, but that may have been because I was one of only a handful of people dining at the time (this was just before 7am on a Sunday). Prices were reasonable, as I ordered biscuits and gravy along with a side of hash browns. I really liked their hash browns, but I wasn't totally impressed by their biscuits and gravy (not enough kick to the gravy to my liking). It's an OK place along the highway, but seemingly just an average place.

This place used to be a 5-star restaurant. Not anymore. (Notice how old those 5-star ratings are on Yelp) It's really a shame, it used to be such a great place! The last couple of times I've been there, the food was hardly fit to eat. Soup beans were watery and bland. Seafood platter was greasy and mostly breading. Chicken on biscuits was mostly gravy. The service is ok but the food is just not worth coming for. Try Mary B's instead.

My family & I have ate here many times. The food is good. The staff is friendly. The only complaints I have are minor- it's not particularly convenient to get to & the seating is made for unusually short-legged people it seems.

I ordered the "famous" pancakes topped with strawberries and received an unevenly cooked pile of three pancakes with a gross red corn syrup smothering all the cakes and the few freezer burned strawberries. At least it is cheap. The place has a fair amount of local hype which now I'm guessing has more to do with the 24 hour diner status than actual menu.

From my experiences, I really wouldn't call this a "family" restaurant but whatevz. Picture a Denny's but not as classy. Nestled in the the rolling hills of West Virginia. Open 24 hours. With waitresses who would ash a cigarette on you if they could. Welcome to the Mountaineer, or "Neer" if you will. The food is nothing impressive but rather satisfies your hunger as much as a gas station sandwich would. But when it's late and you want the "dive bar" of restaurants, drive on over to the Neer--they'll be open for ya.

Family Restaurant? I wouldn't bet on it. A dive for sure, but the food is everything classically diner and delicious. Open 24 hours, this local attraction was a popular spot for late night patrons and truckers alike. I have to admit I've frequented to 'Neer a few times in the wee hours of morning. The food is diner and the breakfast is filling and inexpensive.
