Good food, run by a good family. If you're not familiar with Indian, start out with Chicken Tikka Masala or Malai Kofta for vegetarians. Get some naan and pakoras or somosas. Buffet is always well stocked and tasty, and finsh off with some nutty ice cream.

The buffet is of few options and high price considering what they offer. $16 is for mostly chicken and potatoes. The flavour and food texture tastes strange to me. Will not go back.

One of our favorite places in town -- the buffet is well-priced and consistent! I love that signage on the buffet gives both Indian name and an English hint to the ingredients! Off-menu dishes are delicious and able to be seasoned to individual preference. Best off-buffet appetizers: aloo tikki and aloo naan.

I've eaten from the buffet and the menu at Mother India numerous times. Each time the food is consistent, the restaurant is clean, and the service is acceptable. The main issues facing Mother India are the indifference of the servers/staff, the blandness of the buffet, and the high prices of the menu. If you are looking for the most generic, uncreative Indian food menu on the planet you've come to the right place. India is a place with food on every corner and many unique cuisines all over the country. On top of that Indian-Chinese fusion is huge and allows for even more variety. Does Mother India care? Absolutely not. They can't be bothered by things like creating unique specials, menu additions, or outside-the-box thinking. If you want Indian food in Morgantown it's going to cost you more than it should but you don't have to settle for cookie cutter Indian food. Saffron on the mile ground in a solid option when looking for something different. They have South Indian food and Indo-Chinese options.

I would come again. But people should know this before they visit: The buffet hours end at 2.15pm. You can't take any more buffet food after 2.15pm. If they let you do so, it's because they are just taking pity on you, and the food is there anyway, so they are just letting you take it. At about 2.30-2.45pm, they ask you to leave. It's not their fault-- the sign on the door clearly says the buffet hours end at 2.15pm. However, this means that if you want a reasonable amount of time to sit down, take your time eating/chatting and have enough time to pay for your meal, you need to arrive no later than 1pm. DO NOT GO TO THIS RESTAURANT WITH CHRONIC LATECOMER FRIENDS WHO DON'T UNDERSTAND MORGANTOWN'S PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM ON A SNOWY DAY WHEN EVERYONE ARRIVES AT THEIR DESTINATIONS LATE. All the above explain why the service was impatient and indifferent. Now for the food. The food was good to me. I have had much better Indian food in Asia, but beggars can't be choosers. It was tasty. The restaurant and its plates were clean. Buffets are fuss-free. They are 9.90 per person before tax for lunch. What more can you ask for?

Lunch buffet was good food. Not a large selection and not spicy, but well prepared. Service wasn't great, had to ask for 2nd iced tea. Passable if you like Indian

A little pricey, but the food was good. Nothing outstanding about this restaurant, it looks a little classier than your everyday Indian spots, but not by much. The food is by no means superior. 3.5/5

I was disappointed when our waiter didn't seem to know what gluten was, or what dishes contained gluten and what contained dairy. Or maybe he did but he just didn't feel like being helpful. The food tasted pretty good, but not great. They didn't give me a whole lot of meat either. On the other hand, I seem not to have had a gluten reaction, so maybe what I got was gluten-free after all? Still, perhaps not the best place to come if you have a big day the next day and are severely gluten-intolerant.

Now granted, I have very limited Indian food experience, but I was very pleased with the lunch buffet here. It was excellent "Indian food for beginners", as the buffet gave me a chance to try a little bit of everything. I was especially pleased with the pakoras, and I enjoyed the several vegetarian options immensely even though I'm usually a meat eater. The spice level was just right for me as a novice, but I can see where a true aficionado might want to turn up the heat a little more. At around $10 a plate for the lunch buffet, the price was right, and the service was very friendly.

Went to buffet on a weekday around 1.45 pm (had called earlier and they said it will close at 2:15 pm). Was greeted with indifference and then was offered the worst place to sit, even when 80% of the restaurant was empty. I ignored their prescribed seat and chose a better one. Out of the 8 buffet trays, four of them were almost empty (all chicken items). The other four were untouched. It was pretty clear the non-empty items were not in demand. I asked if they are going to refill the empty ones, they simply replied "no". They did refill naans and pakoras. Needless to say, I was bummed. Won't come back again.

My husband and I stopped in here for dinner this Friday night, as we were passing through Morgantown, WV for an art show. Service was quick and friendly, food was very good, and people seemed to be having a great time. It's a much larger space than the average Indian restaurant, though the menu was somewhat smaller than I am used to. Delightfully kitschy decor. Overall, I'd recommend it for a casual night out.

I've had some good meals here, but mainly when ordering a la carte for dinner. The buffet is quite limited and bland - the menu, on the other hand, is pretty big and diverse. So maybe some more adventurous ordering is a good idea.

I came here today to check out how their buffet is. Since I was alone, I was offered two tables, one very close to the rest room, and the other right next to the exit/entry. The food felt suboptimal at best. The naans felt like the frozen ones found in any store. They felt like they were reheated and served.... a real let down. For vegetarians (I am one), there was chole (chickpea curry), daal makhni (whole grain lentil soup with cream), and kadi-pakoda (now this was marked as Punjabi curry). Kadi-pakoda (fried lentil dumplings in buttermilk soup) was a real disappointment. There was no discernable dumplings in the curry and there was way too much vinegar in it (The buttermilk is supposed to be sour. It shouldn't taste like vinegar. That makes it too rancid). I was hoping the dessert would raise the spirits. This time, it turned out even bad. They had gulab jamuns (basically Indian doughnuts). They were served cold. Gulab jamuns that are served with sugar concoction are supposed to be served hot and fresh. These seemed to have been stored in a refrigerator for a couple of days. They didn't go bad, but they taste the best only when served hot. Service was ok, and the place was clean. So was their restrooms. If you are looking for good Indian food, you would be better off elsewhere. I am not sure how their specially ordered food tastes like. But I am too disappointed to check it out.

I love Indian food and whenever I travel it's what I look for. So we're quite lucky here in Morgantown with two Indian restaurants to choose from. I've eaten dinner here and ordered off the menu, and I've done the Sunday buffet meal with a small party of friends. The restaurant is usually quite full which means that the food's on par with what people can find close by. All in all, I think that the restaurant is A-OK without it being overly nice or overly not-nice. My one little peeve is that the buffet was a little sparse. I was dying for some condiments (like onion chutney) during the lunch. I only discovered that they were hidden with the desserts on the second food section. You won't be disappointed with eating here, but you won't be impressed either. They do have convenient free on-site parking which is a plus for Morgantown with our 24-hour parking meters.

Decided to try this place out as it had pretty good reviews. The food was mediocre. I've definitely had better elsewhere. At $10 for a buffet, take your money somewhere else!

Tried lunch Buffett and it was ok, nothing stood out as great and very little heat in any of the selections

On our way back to Pittsburgh from DC, we chose this place and we have no regrets. Staff was so friendly . It was togo order and we ended up eating there with additional rotis. They did not charge for that. Service was good. People on other tables were also appreciating the food. Food was delicious. Rotis were soft. Will love to go there again.

Mother India is a great addition to Morgantown's downtown. The lunch buffet is very good. A lot of vegetarian options which is awesome. I like a buffet that I know what to expect each time but also has some new things. Mother India would put out special items in the front that were always fun to try. People are complaining about the hours, but if you go at the right time this is an awesome place to eat.

This place was awesome. Made up two dishes that were vegan to accommodate our lifestyle. The veggie plate had amazing flavor. Highly recommend!

Mother India does not have a buffet everyday. We ordered off the menu and I had the lamb Saag (lamb in creamed curried spinach) and it was fan-tastic. I also had the garlic naan which was to die for. The samosas were OK, the garnishes/sauces they came with were the best part. Mother India is by far the best Indian restaurant in Morgantown. (OK, there are only two but still...) I will be back.

Love this place one of my go to's! Love the nan and the chicken curry! Atmosphere and service are always top notch! They have a buffet that is always full I usually stick to the menu. Definitely would recommend trying this place.

  • A K.

I have been here three times and by now I feel quite confident that this is merely average Indian fare. Now I have never been to the buffet and have only ordered from the menu. The Nan is so so and we have tried several varieties. The biryani is very mediocre. Samosas are so so. Curry dishes are just so so as well. There is a better Indian restaurant in Morgantown.

This a pleasant little restaurant in a newer shopping center The dining room is warm and inviting as was the one hostess/server on my midweek noontime visit. And let me say that whereas I expect world class ethnic food where I live (Washington DC area) I'm willing to cut some slack for those that are far from sources of ethnic staple foods. Sadly the food at the buffet was not up to the level of the environs. The Naan was a bit gummy, the Aloo Tikki was oily and chewy, the Paneer (cheese cubes) were also very chewy and sat in a spinach sauce that was watery and flavorless. Each table has onion chutney and thin mango chutney in little jars which is nice and there was a choice of 2 traditional Indian desserts but nonetheless this is a restaurant charging a pretty steep lunchtime price ($8.98) but serving foot that doesn't justify the cost. Maybe their made to order food is better but I don't have high hopes.

My sister suggested we try this place while I was in the area. Heard it had a good lunch buffet. Nice selection, including two desserts. Everything I tried was good, if not delicious. Really liked the korma dish and the chicken tikki masala. As an earlier reviewer mentioned, thought it was odd that the gulab jamun dessert was served cold. The Naan was top notch. As was the mango lassi drink (the drink was not included in the buffet). Thought the price wasn't that bad for a buffet choices/quality of food. My one complaint, only one woman's bathroom for the entire place.

This is legit Indian food. The spiciness level at the buffett is just right for me, which is probably weak compared to other Indians/Indian-Americans. I've been there 2x, once for dinner on a Wed night: ordered 1 vegetarian Thali and 1 meat Thali, both at medium spice level. If you can't get there for buffet, this deal is the closest thing to getting to try a bunch of different dishes, includes a drink and a dessert. Also, be adventurous and try a "poori" instead of naan. Another time, we tried the Thursday night dinner buffett: about 3-4 vegetarian dishes, 3 chicken dishes, 2 desserts. This is a great deal if you can fill up and finish multiple plates, which I cannot do, unfortunately. If you're comparing thali to buffett, thali wins for me because I can take leftovers home, BUT if you return to the buffett line multiple times and want multiple desserts, then the buffett wins hands down for value and variety, but then you have to finish it in 1 sitting.

Our plates were literally dropped before us, seriously. Drinks thrusted onto the table without a second glance. The service wasn't the greatest when we arrived, but our waitress seemed to 'warm' to us toward the end of the meal (quel surprise). The owner (I'm assuming) of the restaurant came over and chatted with us, she seemed very friendly and caring. The food is good, I've been to many fantastic Indian restaurants and curry houses, but this wasn't the greatest. It was also a bit disappointing that the service was lacking, otherwise I would put this as four stars. It definitely would be a place that I would frequent (if I lived in the area) if I had a hankering for some of my favorite dishes. Mother India, while not my favorite, certainly whets the appetite for the flavors of a good Masala, Paneer and Dal Makhni. Naan bread was very good and fluffy, samosas were yummy as well. Head up, if you order a soda, your refill will cost you .75 cents, rather lame. Overall, not a bad place for Indian type food in Mo-Town.

We stop in here for the lunch buffet about twice a month and we always love it. Nice people, tasty hot food. We have never ordered off the menu, but the buffet always has three vegetarian options, and usually two chicken options. I don't care for the chicken dishes, they taste like chicken fat to me, but the veggie dishes are always good. Bathrooms and dining room is always clean, which is so important.

My husband and I stumbled upon this place with a recommendation from a friend. We love spicy food, so we thought we would give it a go, and fell in love! We then heard that another Indian restaurant was better, so tried it and it was no where near as good as this one! We have been back once since then, and it was just as good! Price can get up there if you start ordering alcohol (but I am sucker for beer with spicy food!), however it is for sure a place I ask for when it comes to an anniversary dinner/birthday now! Love this place! And please, if you like spicy food, try the vindaloo! We (me and my husband) both love it!!!!!!!

  • Jinglu S.

The owners here are some of the nicest people in town, and I've come here often enough to where they know me pretty well. The buffet selection is a bit on the smaller side, but the food is delicious. The naan is very fresh and fluffy goes very well with the chicken tikka masala. I'm also a pretty big fan of the gulab jamun dessert balls both for the rich, sweet flavor and for its ability to elicit every form of juvenile humor from my friends. I've only eaten from the buffet, but they also offer a very large selection from their menu. I only wish that they offer dinnertime buffet more than twice a week.

I normally avoid buffet style but gave this a try because I was in the mood for some good Indian food, and I found it here. It was all pretty fantastic Awesome buffet, great service and nice atmosphere.

Sometimes you go to an Indian buffet and they only have a few dishes that are good, not here, everything is good, and there's a wide variety of desserts. Coming from cities which have Little India sections within the city, I would say this is a very solid place with friendly service.

LOVE mother india!! The food is so good and the buffet is really awesome. I take people here who don't even like Indian food and they love it! I would highly suggest going!

Yummy buffet for lunch, extremely nice servers/owners. It's impressive to see big lunch crowds in this sort of out of the way restaurant (and in a town not known for its food adventurousness). Honestly, the food is probably worth 4 stars, but I think it's sort of overpriced, unless you're hungry enough to eat a couple BIG plates of food.

Not the best Indian food! Yes it certainly isn't. The items in the buffet are very limited and they don't taste good except for the naan(flat bread). The desserts are terrible specially gulab jamoon. Being an Indian i definitely will not recommend this for a friend.

Super nice service, cute restaurant, good food. We had the lunch buffet and it was delicious. The cabbage/peas dish had a fantastic kick of hot and the cabbage still had some crunch (not mushy, yay!), and the saag (with garbanzos) was one of the best I've ever had. Selfishly l'd like more vegetarian options, but they had equal veg/non-veg dishes so I can't complain too much. :)

Lovely owners, and our kids (little kids) love the food--always something delicious to eat! We usually end up getting the sampler platter and there's plenty for us. Highly recommended. On the south end of High Street with easy parking.
