Love this place and have never been disappointed! This place is best after 5pm when all their specialty rolls are 50% off!!!

Sushi was decent. We had spicy California roll (can't really screw that up) and rock in roll. The latter was deep fried. Both were good. We also had vegetable tempura and hibachi chicken teriyaki. Tempura had a sweet breading. It seemed like I was eating veggies inside a funnel cake. This was served with salad. Didn't like the ginger dressing. The hibachi chicken was great. It was served with white rice. I expected the rice would be fried but it was good when mixed with the chicken and vegetables. This was also served with house soup, can't screw that one up either. By far not the best Japanese I've had. Had a lot of Chinese element to it. Decent food, I'm just more of a Japanese eater than Chinese.

Disappointed. Didn't have half of the sashimi that I ordered. No UDON soup either..... WTF???

I've eaten here many times, & this place is hit or miss. It depends on how busy they are. Normally, the place is empty (like 2-3 tables occupied). The service is quick, the food is put together well enough, & the prices are relatively low for the rolls. If it were always like this, I'd give a solid 3 stars. They're not equipped to handle busy nights though. The service is slow & forgetful, the chefs skimp on the fish & rice portions (the reason I gave 2 stars instead of 3), & you'd be better off getting kroger/7-eleven sushi. That being said, their sushi isn't bad on a good night. No one roll is exceptionally good, so pick what ever looks good to you. I usually go with the playboy roll. The chirashi (assorted sashimi on rice) is better at other places (Su Tei), but their unagi don (eel on rice) isn't bad.

Great food. Best Sushi in the near radius. My problem with this place is that I used to order them for lunch at work very frequently. They stopped accepting credit card payments over the phone and switched to cash only. I almost never have cash and my job prevents me from getting out to lunch very often. I will not be patronizing them until they allow credit card payments over the phone.

Favorite lunch spot on the East End. You can't beat their prices for quality sushi (lunch offers 3 rolls of your choice on lunch menu for $10). They offer 50% off special rolls during dinner. Great little place with fast service!

Just okay. Sushi was just okay. Service was just okay. I had the ten piece sushi special, which also includes a california roll and a salad. Nicely presented, but nothing unusual. Tuna, shrimp, salmon, crab stick. Meh. How does a sushi place not have Asahi or Sapporo. Just Tsingtao.

This is quite a find! I was wanting sushi a few days ago and the first two places I went to try were closed so I came to Umami. The sushi is great, the servers are extremely inviting and hospitable! Their special rolls are half of after 5pm! This is my second trip this week and I will be back again soon! Maybe even tonight!

The best way to describe the food here is that it is Chinese food with Japanese ingredients. The steak teriyaki that came with salad and steamed white rice (but no miso soup, unlike what the menu said) costs $17, but tastes like a lot of stir-fried beef dishes common to Chinese restaurants; similarly, the sauce that came with the iceberg lettuce and shredded carrot salad was also more reminiscent of Chinese food in flavor. Finally, the price for the teriyaki is way too high for the quality or quantity of food, even in higher-priced markets on the coasts. I also had two maki rolls (Boston and Futomaki) and they too were unremarkable in taste, although at ~$5.50 each, they were not as overpriced as the steak teriyaki. Overall, I would not recommend Umami for Japanese food, unless there are no other options available in Charleston, WV to satisfy a craving for Japanese food and you are willing to settle for fusiony, Chinese flavored dishes that get you partly there.

I really enjoyed my visit to Umamai Sushi in Charleston, WV. There was a promotion going on where all special rolls were 50% off so I enjoyed two of them. That was more than enough since they were HUGE! They tasted great and were well prepared and presented. The restaurant was slow when I visited but I was given just the right amount of friendly attention by the waitress on duty. If you happen to be in Charleston and have a hankering for sushi definitely check out Umami.

My husband and I love this little spot on Charleston's east end. The service has always been wonderful and the food is excellent. We come here at least once a month, and never leave disappointed.

I was about 5.5 hrs away from home. I was really craving sushi. Getting sushi from an unknown place is always scary. If you get bad sushi, you feel like you can't eat it for months. I was very happy with my purchase. It was not the best sushi I have ever had, but there is not an ocean in Charleston WV. I was pleased with the amount of food I got for the money. For a little more than 23.00 I received an order of dumplings, a Philadelphia roll, a spicy tuna roll and a special roll. My suggestion is stick with the basics. California roll, Philadelphia roll etc.

I've had plenty of japanese food and it tasted nothing like this at all. Spicey tuna roll was incredibly disapointing. I was also made a "special" salad by the chef and to my suprise it tasted quite good. However, the texture of the tuna is less than desirable. I believe they use what we in the industry call "fish scrape". This is the leftover product on the bones and then scraped to make your spicy tuna roll. It's not a horrible product if the fish is freshly done at the establishment but I highly doubt that is fresh. The miso was also inadequate. Service went to a point of annoyance and I couldn't even carry my conversation without being interrupted every 5 minutes. The place next door is a fav when it comes to Americanized Chinese food. I will not be frequenting this "Japanese" place. On a good note they do offer the little Japanese soda pops and I love these.

Went for dinner and got more delicious food than I could eat in one sitting. Lovely restaurant, prompt service. Went back today and ordered the Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box. $8, adorable and delicious. Nice change from the usual fried-fiasco that is available for lunch on Washington St. Will return over & over!

Stopped by Umami today around 3pm to try out the newest (and closest to my work) sushi place in Charleston. We ordered a salmon roll, tuna roll, cucumber roll and rainbow roll. Everything was wonderful. Our miso soup was actually better than I've had anywhere in Charleston. And the sushi? The absolute best piece of salmon I have tasted in my entire life! Super fresh, melt in your mouth sushi! I wish we'd ordered about 10 of those (not that the others weren't great, but that salmon roll was like dessert sushi!)! They informed us they had just received the salmon shipment the day before so it was super fresh. I hope they get a lot of shipments in! The service was excellent - attentive without hovering too much even though we were the only ones in the place. The sushi chef even came over to make sure we enjoyed everything. Note: I'm not sure if it's an every day thing (though it does make sense) but it seems the grill chef takes a break between lunch and dinner. When we arrived around 3pm we were told that we were only able to order sushi until 4pm. (Didn't matter to us - that was what we came for!) Seriously the best sushi I've had and I've sampled bad, good, and great sushi in several different states. I'm thining lunch tomorrow.... ;)

One of my favorite places in town to eat. Love the food and the serves is always good. Love the California Rolls and the veggie fried rice. The Cheese wontons are to die for!

Walked in and was super impressed with the interior and the friendliness of the staff. But the food? I don't know if it's just because they've geared themselves towards a lunch crowd and we came for dinner but...the sushi had a distinct "old fish" smell and taste, my husband's steak was cold, and my shrimp was tough. Was very disappointed in the sizes for the price we paid as well.

Excellent sushi and killer cocktails. I highly recommend the Zombie! Great Casino roll and Sexy Lady roll!! Really nice - staff asked how everything was and even the owner thanked us. My favorite sushi place in CRW

Friendly service, clean restaurant. The food still needs work. The calamari was overcooked and on the rubbery side. The shrimp was a bit bland. The salad, rice, and veggies were quite good. Worth a second try.

Nice atmosphere. Maybe a little too brightly lit but otherwise nice. Food was average on this first visit, but it was their first week open. Hopefully it will improve. Service was very attentive. Sushi was tasty but not rolled well. several pieces fell apart sitting on the plate. Here's to hoping that this mediocre visit was due to first week jitters and that Umami improves. If the success and quality of Main Kwong is any indication, they will work hard at improving and soon become a destination.
