Great restaurant close to the interstate. Food is 3 stars Service is 4.5 stars Wine 4 stars As a cloth tablecloth establishment my expectations were high. Service is wonderful, almost perfect. Pleasant, attentive and flexible! Ribeye seasoned too salty and I am a heavy salt user. But done perfectly. Fettuccine Alfredo - bland. Sautéed mushrooms too salty House salad...nice surprise...very good Baked Brie very good. Garlic bread...very good Gott Cabernet wine by the glass...a+

Before we moved to WV, we had a very nice dinner at Char. The location is easy on the eyes, as it is a well landscaped and overlooks a small pond. The atmosphere inside is just as comforting, as the service team is attentive and friendly. As the name implies, steaks are grilled here (as opposed to being seared and finished in an oven) and have a great smoky taste. Other items my party had were double cut pork chops, and escargot that were great as well. Definitely worth a visit of you are looking for a fine dining experience in Beckley.

Enjoyable evening! Chose this restaurant because it received good Yelp reviews- which were accurate. We came in jeans and tee-shirts; most people were a little more dressed up, but not required. Our meals were delicious; fried shrimp with a stuffed potato, and "land and sea". The staff was busy but service was timely- seemed to be a local spot. We finished our meal with raspberry cheesecake and coffees, we felt it was worth the $87 tab.

Great food. Came here with our entire family and was quickly seated and served. The food came out in a timely manner and tasted great. Some of the steaks had to be sent back due to them not being cooked correctly, but were brought back fully cooked the second time. Crab Cakes were fresh, and tasted fantastic. Drinks stayed full and the servers continued to check on us consistently.

I travel for work and passing through Beckley, I Yelped this quaint little GEM!! My server, Christine, was an absolute joy and her recommendations were spot on! The food: The house salad (a 40+ year old fixture) was amazing. The veal parmesan was perfectly cooked and bathed in a flavorful red sauce. I finished with the bread pudding, served with half brandy sauce and half cream. It was just like grandma used to make!! Savory; the bread is soft and not soggy. And there were plenty of raisins to satisfy the kid in me. The menu is affordable upscale. I will definitely be back here next time I'm in Beckley.

2d visit in 3 years. Food, service, atmosphere as good as I'd remembered. Price point a bit high, but one does get a large entre' salad plus one side. All in all, probably the best restaurant in Beckley, maybe even in the Southern Wv. area. Well, maybe there are comparable eateries in Lewisburg, Wv. I.e., General Lewis Inn, The Livery. Worth a trip to experience Char.

Delicious!! Visiting from the DC area and were looking for a nice restaurant to end our stay with. So glad we found char! The service was WONDERFUL. Our waitress was Debbie and she was just lovely, I don't think our water glasses fell below half full once the whole night. The escargot was perfect and so flavorful . The house salad is absolutely delicious . For sides we had the stuffed baked potato and fettuccine Alfredo and both were heavenly. The ribeye was perfectly cooked and full of flavor. We finished the night off with a homemade pistachio ice cream pie with a chocolate graham crust . This was the best food we have had all week . Too bad they aren't closer to home.

Just had early dinner with husband. Char has both positives and negatives. Started off by ordering 2 beers, only bottles, no drafts. We waited about 10 minutes before the waitress came out of the kitchen still chewing her food before we got our beers. We both had salads which their house dressing - excellent. We had choice of plain or garlic bread and ordered the garlic. It too was excellent. Then we get to the main courses. I ordered meatballs with rigatoni. Husband ordered beef shish kabob. Mine was mediocre. His was very good. Meatballs were a bit dry, pasta was overcooked and I've had better sauce from a jar..Waitress said it was made in house. Husband's meat was cooked as he requested and both beef and vegetables were seasoned well. Service could have been much better - waited for drinks, waitress was not able to describe the dishes very well. When I asked her to tell me about their scallops, she looked at me with a "why would you ask that?" kind of face. We waited so long for her to take our credit card for the bill that we decided to pay cash. She showed up, of course, just as we reached for our billfold and said that since the check had been moved from where she placed it on the table, she wondered if she had already taken it up. Duh. So, take your chances, but we won't be going back.

We stopped at Char while traveling based on reviews. Wanted something besides a chain restaurant. We were really pleased with our meal. We had the shrimp cocktail to start. It had a nice cocktail sauce with it. The house salads were amazing with their signature dressing! I had a filet that was very tender and cooked exactly as ordered. My husband had the scallops and they were great too. We both had mixed vegetables as our side and they were done nicely as well. Our little guy had a side of spaghetti that he liked, and I thought was ok. Great service and really nice place. We should have been out of place with our travel attire on, but they didn't make us feel that way at all. Very happy with our choice for dinner! That can be a sore spot for us on a trip.

This has been a favorite stop of mine since coming to the Greenbrier Classic each of the past 5 years. It is a delightfully comfortable establishment with a great menu offering. The 8 oz filet is excellent, there is a special seasoning that tells you no steak sauce is required and the twice baked potato along with their house special salad makes for a great meal after being on the golf course all day.

Nice atmosphere, and most of the staff is extremely friendly and outgoing. There was one girl behind the bar that glared at me for almost my entire meal last time we ate here, but I just decided to ignore her. Luckily, every time I have been here, we have had a WONDERFUL server. The staff anticipates your needs, you never feel like you are looking around in need of anything. You may find yourself close to the diners around you, but as everyone is usually content and in a jovial mood, I find that this just enhances the dining experience at the Char. Everyone ends up chatting with other tables, and friends are made. They have a special appetizer, like chicken fingers made with filet mignon, and our table loved them last visit. I always recommend the baked brie, and a filet for the entrée. The escargot is also delicious, perfectly seasoned. Nice alternative to the chain restaurants on Harper Road.

I have been going here since I was a kid and have had many great meals here! I love the house salad and order extra blue cheese. The shrimp chowder is also very god! The Double Brascioli is my favorite and keeps me coming back with a stuffed baked potato side!

We passed through Beckley two years ago and had a wonderful meal. Since we were back in the area we returned. The wait staff was excellent. My wife chose one of the specials, a Hawaiian fish dish which the waitress said could be ordered to taste. My wife ordered it to be cooked medium. I ordered the brachioli. The fish was overcooked to the point of being thoroughly dry. My brachioli was served over a thin layer of breadcrumbs with no tomato sauce! To emphasize the entire fiasco, her Hawaiian dish was bare while my brachioli was garnished with a pineapple ring! To be fair, the waitress did not charge us for the fish.

Steaks were great. Service was excellent. Lobster was over cooked. Salad was tasty. Beautiful setting. Best dining experience I've had in West Virginia so far. I recommend.

I was very disappointed after all the great reviews. The steaks were perfect, but the BBQ pork chops were very tough and overcooked. The BBQ sauce was thin and tasteless, yet far too hot. Both the BBQ sauce and apple sauce tasted like they came out of a bottle. The staff was polite and readily took away the lousy pork chops and replaced them with a nice steak. However the presentation was surprising, a plain chunk of meat on a plate with absolutely nothing else, not even garnish! Oh come on. The sugar snap peas were overcooked and inedible. The shrimp chowder was very good. The house wines were nice and reasonably priced at $4.95 each. The tables, wine glasses and decor were very nice.

Good food, and nice scenic little setting. The service is usually good too. Char has been around for decades. Seating near the scenic windows is nice. They have a pond with ducks and a hill where deer come to eat. Spendy although a person may get away with a meal under $30 depending upon what all is ordered. Business associates eat here or those wanting a 'fine' dining experience. Make reservations if possible.

Here in town conducting adventure tourism research when hunger pains took over. The Char serves American cuisine with pork and lamb chops, some fish, lobster and Italian faire. Choices of 5, 8, 12, and 16 oz. steaks. I had a 5 oz filet mignon with baked potato and small salad with house dressing. The house dressing is well worth a try. Soft rock music piped in just above my head so that our conversations included references to the songs, artists and lyrics. Two of us with no wine.

Excellent cuisine and service. I recommend trying new items You have never has before as all items were delicious. the fried olives were so heavenly that I ate 5 and only left two for him. The Brasiloi Filet Mignon was delicious. Filet pounded out and sprinkled with cheese. Music was soft rock, and very pleasant for the evening.

Probably Beckley's premier dining spot, The Char features standard faire American cuisine. The building is dated 60's architecture but the interior has been refinished. The food was acceptable and the service worked hard to cater well to the guest's needs.
