Food has gotten better since my last visit in 2012.

APparently, I'm in the minority, but this pizza was so not good. The crust tasted like paper, the sauce had a weird taste as well--like very thick tomato soup and the cheese looked like it had been placed on top and not melted much. The Italian fries were worse than the pizza. Yuck.

First time visit and we would stop in future! Had their Italian Fries for appetizer. Small order plenty for 3 adults with generous portion of tasty marinara for dipping. I had Philly steak sandwich-tasty, superb bread, sweet mellow onions but my side of sweet potato fries were overdone. Husband had a gyro and thought it was acceptable for being at a non-Greek restaurant. 19 year old son had the "Bet you Can't " Burger and it's true! He could not finish it! But will have it later in UWSP dorm! Soups sounded great and nearby table had French Onion and it looked fantastic. Service was good, decor of a mine was cool, kid friendly place. Lots of kids and families present. Must have game room upstairs but kids can play while adults enjoy cocktail and tasty food!

I wasn't born, but I did grow up in this little, north-central Wisconsin town. While I don't have a lot of fond memories living in Wausau, the Wausau Mine Company is one of the few. Most of the menu is just okay, nothing special; it's hit or miss, kind of like the service. When I pass through town or happen to be up there visiting family, there is only one thing I want and it's their Italian fries with cheese and marinara sauce. Fresh from the oven, it's simply delicious. It looks like cheese on pizza crust BUT it's not. The dough is just different--more compact, slightly crispy on the bottom and chewy on top, perfect saltiness. Dip it into the house marinara sauce and it makes returning to Wausau a bit more bearable. Fresh is best so eat it there; if you reheat it, the crust tends to get very hard quickly. I've eaten other things there but nothing memorable. Stick to the pizzas and the Italian fries and you'll be fine.

This place is normally pretty good but today was not a good day at Wausau mine we got a table but no waitress and the place was not that busy. We waited 20 minutes before we decided to take our group of seven and go somewhere else.

Wausau has active granite mining (open pit), but this place is a wonderfully recreated underground mine, complete with artifacts. Well done. CHEESE and some pizza crust make their Italian Fries appetizer stand out from others. Note: Fresh mushrooms are available, but you have to ask for them. Remember to order: "less cheese" on your pizza, but it will still be more cheese than expected. Great bar food sandwiches. Hamburgers, Philly steak sandwich, and hot beef sandwiches are all full of flavor (grease = flavor). Come in as your casual self and enjoy.

I'm surprised to read that someone thought the food has changed here. I wonder why they think that. This is a place that's been down the street from my parents house, and we've been going there for a solid 10 years or so. The food, especially the italian fries, always taste the same to me! Tonight I called to order italian fries to go. They were super friendly and had them ready in less than 20 minutes. The italian fries were amazing, as always, there's so much cheese! And the sauce is just right. Keep it up, Wausau Mine! I'll be sure to get take out when I'm back home for Thanksgiving break.

There is no excuse for pizza this bad. Sloppy, tasteless, and all served by rude servers. Avoid at all costs....try Sam's Pizza for a much better pizza and restaurant.

My husband had been hearing a lot about the place having great food and a neat ambiance lately, so we decided to check it out. They couldn't seat us right away because they didn't have any menus. That was odd. My husband took our son to the restroom and I asked if I could sit and they could bring a menu when one became available. Decor was unusual. I felt like I was in a basement. No windows. Dark. I did like the privacy of the booth seat that we had though. I put in an order for a small Italian fries right away as it said allow extra time on the menu. They came out pretty quick. Could be very good with a few adjustments. Too much cheese. Not browned, just melted. Not enough seasoning. The sauce was good. Husband ordered a burger. It was huge. He enjoyed it. They forgot the fried onions but our server noticed it when handing him his plate and brought some out promptly. I had ordered a glass of Malbec. It took the server about 10 minutes to tell me that they were out and did I have a 2nd choice? I asked for the house Cabernet Sauvignon, waited another 5 or so minutes for that - it was bad. Quite bitter, dry and tasteless. I left half the glass. I had the fettuccine Alfredo with chicken and veggies. Pasta and sauce made in house. It was okay. She said broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. The carrots were missing. That was fine as I prefer broccoli. There was a lot of chicken, just not that great. I don't know if it was cooked prior and then reheated? Had an off flavor/texture. That came with a salad. Nice mixed greens, fresh mushrooms, red onion, croutons and a cherry tomato. Decent side salad. Also came with 2 pieces of garlic toast. I am pretty sure that it was the Texas Toast from the grocery store. My son had chicken strips off the kids menu. Came with chips and a pickle. Beverage was not included. No fruit. I asked. We had a bunch of food left over. I told my husband that this is a "fat person" restaurant. I was feeling very fat after eating there. We took nothing home. The bill was 43.23 53.00 with tip Service was good. Food was decent. Prices were fair. I think we'd go again, try something else; maybe ask to sit upstairs and order a beer or soda instead of wine.

If I were sentenced to be executed, and was putting together the menu for my last meal, the first thing on the menu would be Italian Fries with Cheese from Wausau Mine Company! They are so go they should almost be illegal. The atmosphere of the place is so cool, too. True "Badger State" dining with the mining theme.

  • Paige S.

The atmosphere here is very fun and nice. It used to be one of my favorite places to go and take my family when they visited but the last few times we have gone...the food and the service has been mediocre with a very long waiting period for our food. I would check it out if you haven't gone, maybe they changed back to the way they were!

I've been coming to the Mine for years with my family, it's always been a favorite of ours. Every time I order the Italian cheese fries! They're the best!! Make sure to get extra sauce, you'll need it. They also have really good potato chips that come with almost every order. The spices they use are fantastic!

Siouxanne from the South here... ....NOW jus' let me apologize rite up front fo my Suthern' vernacular. It's like a tattoo, hard tuh get rid of. I tawk funny n type funny. But I jus' gotta tell yew 'bout this place. Gooood enough tuh make ya SLAP YER HAT IN THE CREEK! I can see why the No' thuns won the war! This here place got 5 star ambience and drive thru road food prices!!! America's has GOT TO SEE THE PLACE! I sent Food Network an email to tell Guy Fieri' 'bout it! On March 22, 2013 I wuz drivin' around Wausau lookin' for supply. It was so cold and windy I think I saw a Democrat with his hands in his own pockets. All the sudden ah saw this crooked ole, rusty beat down leanin' buildin' with a restaurant sign on it. There weren't no places in the huge parkin' lot so I drove 'round a couple three times and hooked one, quick like. It wuz terrible busy. It smelled reeeeal good while I was waitin' in line. I sed to myself, Self, ya outta sit at the bar where the cool folks hang out! "I walked in sober ez a Baptist Preacher on uh Sunday mornin'. Seth wuz tendin' bar n' said I could eat there too. He free poured dranks like a pharmacist, to the point where all the men folk started lookin' bettern' when I walked in. I tell ya! Last thang I 'member I was orderin' a conveyer belt and a catheter. Heck, I was swayin' so bad I coulda tripped over a cordless phone. Happier than a dawg with two peters. Damn good bartender, that Seth is! I was lucky nuff to meet the owner Stephanie, what a young pretty lil' filly she wuz and niiiiice, real niiiice! She didn't look old enough to sit at the bar. My meal was Poor Man's Lobster. Wooooo wheeee, drippin' in drawn butter n' lemon, lawdy mercy it was fine eatin'. The tater fluffy n steamy was big as a football. I tell ya those plentiful vittles got gone real fast. I met great folks like Wilbur, who whistle's reeeal good like a Canary. Since the theme of the restaurant is an underground mine and I mean Disney World quality convincin'. I thought it wuz part of the "Canary in the Coal Mine" theme and I wuz glad the bird was alive...if ya know what I mean Vern. Turned out the whistlin' wuz just one of the regular patrons, Wilber. What great company he wuz too! We shared my IPod together and yapped 'bout his boy! Anyway...on my other side a sweet gal name Korine Whiting kept me engaged in girl talk she's a massage therapist in town. Whut a doll she wuz. I cain't wait to come back in the Summah' when the purty snow is all melted and try some more of Meth Seth's top shelf dranks! Heck ever'thangs top shelf when I'm lying on the floor! Best dang drankin' & dinin' experiences I evah had in my whole life. But be careful if you sit with Seth, you'll wake up with yo' hair hurtin'. But don't hole it aginst Seth now ya'll.

Great fries, good burger, good pizza, it's a mine. Worth the trip and you can bring the kids.

Nice decor for a mine shaft themed restaurant. Service was good but food was average. Italian fries with cheese could have used some garlic flavoring. Pizza had a lot of mozzarella cheese and didn't taste much different from the Italian fries (except for the green peppers). Burger was probably the best menu selection.

    (3)
  • Steve A.

First off, do not get cheese curds here. They tasted like pieces of mozzarella stick. After an intro like that, I wasn't expecting much, but luckily the lunches turned out to be somewhat better quality. Drinks and food are both reasonably priced. Overall not bad, but I'd look elsewhere next time if I'm up this way again.

My friend, Brenda and I went to Wausau Mining Co. when we were staying at a relatives house for a long weekend. We both had the "alladatime" soup, which is french onion soup. The only reason why I could think it would give it a different name is cause the cheese they melt on top is like white Velveeta instead of swiss or mozzarella cheese. And the soup was not very flavorful but it was good overall. I got the Reuben sandwich and it was tasty. I can't remember if we ordered cheese curds or not. Hopefully she will review and remember her sandwich and if we got curds or not. The service good and fast. The chips that came with my sandwich were very yummy as well. There is a picture of a miner on the sandwich page of the menu and it is very creepy and the menu would still be nice with out that image being there.

Stopped in yesterday for lunch with friends. We all had something different none of us were disappointed with our choices. Would we stop there again "YES". The outside of the building is different and so is the inside but was intended to be that way. After all it is called the Wausau Mine Company and they accomplished what they set out to do. Check out the website:http: //www.wausaumine.com/

Don't bother. They offer fried foods (seems like pre-made bulk food type of items), white bread style pizza topped with lots of low grade cheese and some pastas. It is gimmicky though, so kids might like it, for a bit. Do yourself a favor and stay home.

Cheese fries are to die for! Soooo amazing and it is just covered with Cheese sooo good!! Friday night fish fries - $2 Old Fashions and their fish is pretty decent. Not the best fish I had but it is delicious and the fried fish is good because it isn't overly gressy. Very good fish! I love their thick fries (which I normally am not a fan of but I like these!) If you can make a reservation - I would - Plus they have rebuilt the building which looks amazing! :)

  • J W.

The italian fries are always good, although I think the golden nuggets are much tastier. I prefer lots of garlic and these hit the spot! I also love the hot beef sandwich, it is delicious! The burgers are always yummy and the onion rings are fantastic! The pizza is good, super cheesy and not too heavy on the sauce! The only thing here that I don't care for is the salads, they always seem so sad with wilted bag lettuce and generic toppings.

  • Tiffany L.

Meh! The Italian Fries were delightful - everything else was just really average. The spaghetti and meatballs is nothing to write home about - the meatballs were downright nasty. The French onion soup wasn't nearly as flavorful as a French onion soup should be. The taco salad looked pretty, not sure how it tasted. The husband liked his fish sandwich and chips. Service was quick and friendly. My 85-year-old Nana was very impressed with the place, LOVED the spaghetti sauce - not sure that's a good or bad thing... The overall look of the place is a lot of fun and will entertain out-of-towners for sure and earns a star just for the overall fun factor of the place. Can't say we'll be rushing back...

My husband and I decided to check this place out after hearing about it from some locals. It's safe to say we will NOT be returning. The only bright spot of our entire meal was the Italaian Cheese Fries..But not worth another hour drive to just have those. We ordered french onion soup and chili..both were seriously lacking in flavor. We than had to ask the waitress to clear the table and refill drinks. We than recieved our prime rib plates..husband said his was not bad...i was not a fan. The alfredo side dish was also lacking in flavor. The waitress was slow and rarely seen, most of the time had to ask another server for things. The atmosphere was interesting, however the tables and chairs are sooo close together that it made it feel very crowded.

If you're vacationing in the Wausau area, or maybe skiing at Granite Peak as I was, the Wausau Mine Company is a very safe bet. The Italian fries (with cheese) are a tasty start- but as others have pointed out, realize that these are bread sticks and not fries. The pizza sauce provided for dipping is nicely seasoned and makes me curious to try one of their pizzas on a return visit. This trip I had the mushroom burger. Very flavorful beef, but a soggy soggy bun detracted somewhat. Decent selection of reasonably priced wines by the glass ($4.50+) Very good service from Kim. Far enough from the highway to have more of a 'local' feel. Come here instead of Texas Roadhouse and you won't be disappointed.

Good food, not great, but large menu that has something for everyone. Good looking place too. Price just right for a lot of food.

Not impressed. First they were trying to take our order before we were even seated & situated. Hadn't even opened the menu yet. They forgot my daughters salad, never offered to refill our drinks, and I had to search for our waitress to correct these things. Their 'special red sauce' is an insult to Ravioli and probably anything else it would be served with. Not worth the price in product or service.

Good food and service. Very unique "mining shaft" interior design. If you go, you've got to get the Italian Fries app. Good for families w/kids.

The Wausau Mine Company was sold to the owners son and he updated the place. It is a very fun place to go for a fine meal. They do offer Pizza, but a nice selection of other dinner choices too. Everything from pasta to steaks. Not an abundant selection in each category, but enough choices to please everyone. I was with a group that had everything from pizza to steaks. I had a steak that not only was done just the way I like it, but also very tasty down to the last bite. The twice baked potato I had was served in a cup, but it was very good. The salad that came with the meal was good. Appetizers include the famous Italian Fries and they were great, nice and Cheesy. Not French Fries, but more like cheesy Italian bread bits. The service was great and very friendly for a large group. The place is done up to resemble a mine and mine work buildings. It is done well and is entertaining. I think the son is great energy for the place and it shows in the food and the service. The next time I am in Wausau, I will be stopping in again.

My husband is from Wausau and on our first trip to visit his family, we ended up here. I wouldn't call this PIZZA, but it was a good chunk of cheese, none the less. 3 stars for being retro and the cheese "pizza" was pretty good! Who doesn't like cheese, anyway!?

Loved the mine shaft feel of the place, very well done to create a unique dining experience.

Authentically Wausau. The Italian Fries keep 'em coming back. Pizza is good as well. Now i need them to freeze and ship the Fries out of state.

OK- the Italian fries are - along with cheese curds-- what I miss and wax nostalgic about now that I live so far away from my hometown. This was the hangout after swim meets and for YMCA lifeguard staff get-togethers- and those cheesy breaded sticks dipped in marinara were the reason. My dad said they've gone downhill in recent years- but for me, hope still springs eternal. It is a cheesy place decor-wise- and apparently when my parents arrived, pre- me in the 60's, it was a disco before it became a restaurant. But we need a little cheese- it's Wisconsin and you have to know that cheese permeates the culture- we batter and fry it, put it on everything-- even wear fake styrofoam versions of it on our heads at sporting events (don't knock it entirely- they're surprisingly warm on a December afternoon at Lambeau!). Wausau Mine's Italian Fries serve it up with abundance.

Wausau Mine Co. is a great place for cocktails and food, simple and no frills. Our favorite go-to place while living in Wausau late last fall. One warning though - the "Italian Fries" are not really fries at all, but more like pizza bread sticks. I guess this is commonly known in the area, but being from Chicago, I expected gooey mozzerella cheese over french fries with marinara sauce (or some such thing). They are good, but are not "fries" so, misleading. The burgers are really good, as are the chicken sandwiches.

We stopped here on the way home from Up North because of the selection. Warning: it looks like a dive and it's very dark inside...like a cave....because it's supposed to look like a mine. We had their special garlic bread pizza crust which my kids LOVED. We had pizza which was GREAT. I had an awesome burger. The kids meals are very inexpensive ($3 maybe?). Our entire family of 5 ate and had WAY TOO MUCH FOOD for about $50. Great place, in my opinion. Also, they have a very small game room upstairs which was a good distraction for the kids while waiting.

Great place! I had fettucine alfredo and others had pizza. I can honestly say the alfredo sauce was some of the best I've ever had!

This was the place to get great cheese sticks back in the day, it's been in business for as long as I can remember. . As a teen I couldn't get enough of them. The pizza is also great and priced right. I would recommend it and I hope they're still in business when my kids are old enough to enjoy pizza fries! The service can be hit or miss, but the take out is always fast and good.

I wanted to write an update about Wausau Mine Company. Recently, I tried their burgers, a few different types and they are really good! They taste char-grilled which is often hard to come-by in the Wausau area... If you want to be really naughty try their italian fries... cheese, dough, cheese, garlic and more cheese... oh, ya... and marinara sauce for dipping... you'll feel GUILTY afterwards, but it is delicious!!!!!! I have not visited Wausau Mine Co. since 2006 and after our meal today we will be visiting more often. The food is great and the service is excellent. The family went today for a late lunch and each of us had something different - and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. My Philly sandwich reminded me of cheese-steaks I enjoyed in Philly. Our hostess was friendly and whenever we needed something she was right there. The cost for a family of (4) is inexpensive and the menu has something for everyone.

I had found this place on Granite Peak's website and since we were coming for the weekend, I wanted to try it. Ehh maybe I shouldn't have. I was pretty disappointed. The building and decor are pretty awesome, so it's got that going for it. Everything else was very blah. We were just coming for some appetizers and drinks and weren't very satisfied. Our waitress might have been new, or just didn't know anything at all about the restaurant. Half the place is a bar and I asked if they had a drink menu to which I received a blank stare and a '..noo" so then I asked if they have anything on tap and she handed me a hand written note of what they have, just the names and no styles of the beer. We ordered a couple appetizers. We got nachos, cheese curds and a side salad. I will admit the salad was great and since we were in Wisconsin i should have expected that much cheese. It was basically a cheese salad with a few pieces of lettuce thrown in there. The cheese curds were good but the nachos were not great at all. It was just corn chips with shredded melted cheese (so you're against the clock with eating them) and topped with diced onions, tomatoes and green peppers. I should have made better nachos in my hotel room. I understand that it is a family friendly environment but did they really need to surround us with kids? There was plenty of other tables available and we left quickly because I couldn't stand hearing kids screaming "MOM DO YOU HAVE ANY MORE QUARTERS?! I WANT TO PLAY A GAME! MOM DO YOU HAVE QUARTERS?!" Overall, such disappointment with the service and food here. If I ever come back to this down, I wouldn't come here.

  • David P.

Food was great, service was noooottttt..... I'm not sure if the waitress that we had was having a bad day or was just suffering from an all night drinking hangover but she messed up multiple times with out drink orders and couldn't even write down the salad order properly. Between not being attentive at the table and forgetting even waters for the table, this waitress knocked down the the rating to a 3 That being said if you do avoid the bad waitress the food was great and the place is a very unique place to have lunch or dinner.

Cheese fries are the only decent thing here. Watch out for racist old men at the bar.

  • Grant V.

I've been here numerous times and the pizza is hands down amazing! This is your place in Wausau to get a one of kind pizza! It has me coming back again and again for the awesome taste! They pile the cheese high and are never short on toppings! Not to mention the unique building and fun atmosphere! This is a Wausau stop you need to make if you're in the area! The service for me has been hit or miss, with having a great waitress and everything you need, to a terrible time where they can't even get you drinks right. But nonetheless I'll keep coming back for that darn good pizza!

In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations.
