Ah, relativity! Being a well seasoned traveler, i enjoy experiencing mexican cuisine's various expression through different regions. And was very pleased with Jalapeño. Clean and cozy restaurant in a fabulous location. Quick friendly service. Huevos Rancheros were very good- I asked for jalapeños and habanero sauce to add some hot. Perfect. Latin music playing in the background. For Mexi in northern WI - the ambiance, service and quality met my expectations.

Great service! They check back a few times throughout the meal and the food always tastes fresh. They recently expanded to upstairs as well and I heard that it's excellent.

I ate here on a Thursday night and decided to sit at the bar and eat while I waited for friends. I ordered a premium margarita. It was outstanding. The bartender was also very friendly and helpful explaining the menu since I hadn't been here before. The lime chicken was very tasty and their homemade salsa was definitely a winner. Only complaint I had was a dad brought his (looked like) ten year old daughter and sat at the bar. That's just inappropriate. No kid should be sitting at a bar with their dad. He should have been asked to leave the bar area (where a lot of grown up conversations were happening ) to sit at a table with her.

good drinks, there are people having fun and dancing, appropriate fun club lighting, and, most importantly, AWESOME dance music. I've found my happy place!

Convenient location, great atmosphere and good food. Like someone else said, the salsa was very bland. My main concern is about its business ethics. Last week,I had lunch here with a colleague of mine. I put around 11% as tip based on my experience with food and service. But when I looked at my credit card statement today, they have charged more for the tip without my consent or signature. That basically goes up to 27% tip! This is cheating and not right. So, please be careful of that when you visit this place.

Very friendly staff and great food. They also have very good drink specials on many nights of the week, including Friday evening and all day Sunday!

I've been to Mexico several times and love Mexican food. In between vacations, it's hard to find a restaurant that serves authentic Mexican food with good prices. This is a restaurant I can always count on to fill that need. I love this restaurant's chips and salsa and their Ranchero Cheesesteak. The servers are attentive and the food does not take long to get to the table. And it's so good! The desserts are very satisfying as well. If you are downtown and want Mexican, I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Born and raised 50 miles from the Mexican border. I was surprised to find out these guys have El Yucateca hot sauce. Anyone who uses El Yucateca hot sauce knows what they are doing. Awesome Mayan style decor atmosphere in a very cool building. Upstairs bar and 2-1 margaritas Mon-Sat... . Very cool personnel that are hardworking, friendly, and quick, the service was exceptional. I had a great time and I know you will too! Great for families or dates. I sat at the bar and still had a blast! And FYI the bar tenders are easy on the eyes and I just had water...

I am staying at The Jefferson Street Inn and this was close . I stumbled upon it and checked the reviews and it seems ok . Such a BAD idea ! Chips were crisp but that is where the goodness ended , salsa very bland . The person who said best Mexican food this side Cabo has never been to Cabo and eaten is the only thing I can figure . Rice is the best thing on my plate and that's sad because it's not that good . I got the Swiss chicken enchiladas on the recommendation of my waiter . Says everybody loves then ? Who is everyone ? Point them out to me because I need to punch them in the throat and then check their taste buds ! I picked at the enchiladas and he asked he if I wanted a To go box ..... Ummm no i think if there is only one bite out of something at the end of a meal you ask if everything was on not if they want a box . Just sayin'

The food was okay. If you're looking for TRUE authentic Mexican food, this is not the place to go. It's more Americanized Mexican food. The three stars is for the margaritas though. Those are really yummy. The service is always very friendly, I'm just not a fan of the food. However I am biased because I did grow up with a best friend from Mexico and lived in California, Arizona, and Las Vegas where authentic Mexican food is very easy to get and that's just what I got used to.

We have tried most of the Mexican places in the area and this one is definitely the best one. Good Mexican is hard to come by around here and this was good. I wouldn't say that it's great but it is the best that we have been able to find in the area.

This is a cute restaurant in the basement of some sort of shopping center. I only came here for margaritas, and I can't say I was impressed with them. Also had some guacamole which was only so so, but the chips were good- crispy and salty. I'm not sure how it happened but the bill for two apps and four drinks came out to $16, so I left happy.

If you want to become a Wausau insider, then visit this restaurant hidden in the basement level of the Washington Square building just outside the mall in downtown Wausau. Formerly "El Jalapenos," good flavors for good prices is what sets this place apart. Check out the pictures. Traditional chips and salsa arrived at the table. A mild amount of kick is part of the salsa here, and a couple of the chips had a mixed spice seasoning that would be nice on most of the chips.

This place is amazing. For Mexican food in central Wisconsin two thumbs up. This written by somebody from Southern California who eats Mexican food all the time. The shrimp tacos, chicken enchiladas, and chili verde with pork is amazing. Good drink specials when they have 2 for 1 margaritas. Our group came here numerous times throughout the year and it was good he every time.

This opened up in the space of the previous Mexican Restaurant in Washington Square and has the same furniture layout but a different menu. I've been there several times and have been satisfied with the food. Arroz con pollo is good. So is the Panchos Lemon Lime Chicken. (They do not have a website only a Facebook page facebook.com/pages/El-Ja… )

I went here for chips, salsa, guac and a Patron margarita the other night and was not disappointed. Our two female bartenders were delightful and entertaining. They made us some fantastic margs, and the guacamole, though a slightly small portion, was amazing. We will definitely be coming back for entree's some night! Be careful of the hidden location, though. It's right by the mall, but in the basement of a small, internal strip mall!

Got the chicken nachos, queso dip and a cheese enchilada. Everything was delicious! The shredded chicken on the nachos was super savory, queso was a slightly spicy white cheese dip, and enchilada sauce was obviously homemade and spiced perfectly! I have some food allergies, and forgot to get the nachos without beans. They were great about making a new one from scratch and waitstaff was super friendly! I'll be back soon! Parking is scarce, but there's room in Wausau Center's lot just a short walk away.

Best Mexican food I've had this side of Cabo San Lucas. My wife and I were in town visiting our families from Portland, OR and couldn't be happier with this place. The food was EXCELLENT! Service was a little slow at first but the grub more than made up for it. It's affordable and super authentic. I've honestly had lesser food in Mexico. We'll definitely be back.

Love this place! Food is authentic and staff attentive! The new upstairs bar and restaurant are a wonderful addition! Outside seating is GREAT. Take advantage of this treasure in Wausau, WI!

Horrible service after the hostess sat us. Our waiter was extremely unpleasant and rude. Very slow with both drink and food orders. Forgetting waters until prompted a third time. As far as the actual food orders. The fish tacos were a fried tilapia; absolutely disgusting. Cabbage slaw smelled like an outhouse. Burger was completely overcooked and dry. Chicken sandwich was also horribly overcooked. Found a hair on my grandmother's plate as well. Guess we will stick with El Mez when visiting town from now on.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
