Authentic, delicious food I've been searching high and low for good Mexican food since moving from the Bay Area of California to Wisconsin and they deliver. Try the fish tacos with black beans instead of rice. They're dipping sauce is so flavorful!

We've been here four or five times in our eight years in Wisconsin and it's one of two places we keep on the list for Mexican food in our area (we live about 40 minutes away). I've yet to give a five-star review for a restaurant, as I think those should be done sparingly, but this restaurant comes close for me, as it's consistently very good food, a very pleasant atmosphere, and great service every time. A staple for me is classic Tex-Mex enchiladas with red sauce, cheese and lots of onions, and even though those weren't on the menu the first time we came, the waiter that day (who, as it happened, was the owner) was happy to oblige me. He said they got lots of requests for those, and I think they may have been added to the menu since. Our most recent visit was just two of us (my son and I) this May, and he was very enthusiastic about the place. Even at 12, he's pretty aware of food and its qualities, and he's pretty good at articulating good information about food. He's a huge fan of this place. The family doesn't eat out a lot, but because we're originally Texans, we value Mexican and Tex-Mex highly, so we'll drive up to Wausau before choosing any of the three or four places around here, and El Tequila Salsa is our top choice.

We live in Chicago, but come to the area a few times a year to ski at Granite Peak (about 2 miles away). Quite honestly, this is some of the best Mexican food we get to eat all year long. Every time we come to Wausau for the skiing, El tequila Salsa is a mandatory for my family. The cheese dip, the bean dip, the salsa, the shredded beef tacos, the fajitas, the margaritas, the spotted cow on tap, the service, the kids menu. It's all what the doctor ordered when it comes to enjoying a really delicious Mexican meal with your whole family. We show up in our ski clothes, fresh of the mountain. Nobody gives us a weird look. In fact, they even have a sign outside saying "Skiers Welcome." It would actually be smart of them to offer a free cheese dip to people who show them a valid lift ticket for that day. Maybe they should try putting that on their sign to see how much extra business it brings (not that they need it). The place is always full when we've been there.

The service is super slow every time we have been here. Slow to get our drinks, slow to take our orders and slow to bring the check. They have gotten our order wrong 2 out of the 4 times we've been here. We probably won't be going back.

Good service. Fresh ingredients. Not the greatest ever but pretty top notch for a quick meal.

Awesome place! Have eaten here many, many times, and we have tried just about everything on the menu. I think the salsa is a little watery, but everything else is great! Service is outstanding. Never any waiting, always very friendly. There are other Mexican restaurants in the area, but this is the best!

Food was typical for a Mexican restaurant of this type....service was extremely slow. It's a weeknight so I just want to eat and go! Took a long time to get the bill.....

If you're at rib mountain state park definitely come here for lunch, only several minutes away. 12-3 lunch specials. Excellent fresh mango margarita! I haven't found a place that makes better mango margaritas and trust me, I have been looking. On the thursday I went they had a BOGO house margarita special, not sure if it was a weekly special or not. I ordered the beef tacos lunch special and a steak fajita plate with four tortillas, refried beans, rice and lettuce for $15 - this was enough to feed two people. Both meals tasted fresh and good. Not disappointed. The only real disappointment were the desserts. Fried ice cream did not taste fresh, the fried part of the ice cream tasted very stale and the serving size was huge. The flan was just okay, nothing special. Just an update... In Houston now and I'm still missing their mango margaritas. I haven't found a place that compares!

Food, drinks, and service were awesome! We will definitely be coming back and highly recommend it to our friends!

If you like authentic Mexican food don't come here. The fish tacos and chicken taco salad was bland and tasted like cafeteria food. The margaritas and salsa prior the the meal were great, service was fast and friendly although we were there during their slow time.

last minute eating in Wasau, WI! We got to town and everything was shutting down. This place is in a strip mall, nicely decorated and very clean. We arrived and asked if the kitchen was still open, they said yes and we sat down to have some great food. My coworker had the chicken adobado and I had the steak torta. My food was great, although the bread they used was really authentic for tortas. However the meat and all the ingredients were awesome! Our server was top notch friendly guy. He was playing a mexican MTV show with some old school mexican rock, which I love!! If i am in town again I will stop by here!

This is the second time I went to El Tequila Salsa and it was equally impressed. Everything was clean, and the employees were organized. Once we sat down they brought our chips and salsa. Then within a minute, a man with a very nice dress attire came and we ordered our drinks. (All of the waiters were clean shaven with a nice dress attire, much nicer than a place like Cancun) There's a large menu, and they were helpful when we had questions. My husband and I both ordered the trio fajitas, and they were delicious! They were well seasoned and there was so much that there was a good amount that we got to take home. So I would take it was worth the $16 a person. Plus you got rice, refried beans, and lettuce on a separate plate. With the option of flour or corn tortillas. (Although I would say the rice was bland.) We didn't have any alcoholic beverages, but they definitely had a lot of choices. Overall this is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Wausau, and it's the one I'll tell my friends and family to go to.

Wow. What an awesomely pleasant surprise! We had a wonderful Mother's Day lunch here. It started off a little iffy - we weren't at all crazy about their guacamole or salsa. The guacamole was just really pasty and lacking in cilantro-y goodness. It didn't taste horrible, but I certainty would steer clear of it in the future. Our entrees came out very quick. I had the carnitas and it was extraordinary. Seriously, it was incredibly delicious and pretty much cleared my entire plate. My husband had the taco salad and I had a small taste and it was very good. For dessert we had the flan which was pretty good. I didn't care for the strawberry or chocolate sauce at all and in my opinion greatly ruined such a lovely, traditional Mexican dessert. It was also a bit firmer than I prefer, but the flavors were delicious. Service was extremely nice and efficient! All in all, we had an fabulous experience at El Tequila Salsa and will absolutely be back in the future. The menu seems to offer a wide variety of delicious dishes!

Salsa was not spicy enough for me, but my steak soft shell tacos (with a generous helping of hot sauce) were very good. I'll definitely be back.

This place is amazing! It's hard to believe how good this Mexican food is for such a small town "up north". They have delicious salsa; more cilantro than most other places in town which gives it a little sometime extra. They have a very large variety of margarita flavors and other drinks to choose from. I absolutely love their fish tacos and the tostadas de ceviche (only served on Fridays). They have really authentic Mexican dishes as well as the standard American favorites. I come here every time I come into town. The cheesecake chimichanga is great too!

I am here from out of town for work and decided to eat here. The food was pretty good. I had the chimichanga, it was ok. A little greasy for my taste. The chips were good and the salsa wasn't to bad, a little watery. The drinks were very well priced. Overall for the price it wasn't to bad, but probably won't make a point of revisiting.

This was our second visit to El Tequila Salsa and probably my last. Service was not attentive and slow. We ate on Cinco de Mayo at 3 to 4 PM. The dining room was less than half full. While the food was good it wasn't outstanding. The entrees were slow to arrive and were delivered by another staff member not our server. The Molcajete came without nopales as listed on the menu, instead large green onions were substituted which were both hard to cut (the outside layers being soft and slippery) and to eat. Having eaten this dish in Puerto Penasco, Mexico this version was dissappointing. My wife's flauta was burnt and she pushed her plate to the edge of the table. Since no one stopped by our table until well after we finished eating, we could only return it and ask that it be removed from our bill. My wife gestured to our server when visiting an adjoining table to take their order and thought she had gotten his attention, but our server walked away without acknowledging her. When the server came to ask if we were ready for our bill my wife asked to have the flauta removed from our bill and I asked for a take out container. My wife wanted to try their platano flameado described as sliced bananas with rum and orange juice, with ice cream and whipped cream and ordered it at this time. If this dessert was flamed it was done in the kitchen and the rum flavor was not evident nor was the whipped cream. Our server left the flauta on the table until he came back after a prolonged wait with another server who also looked at the flauta. Neither of them talked with us but our server removed the plate. Before our dessert was served another staff member came to clear the molcjete dish from the table. We asked again for a take out container. While waiting a person I presumed to be the manager stopped to clear the table. We again asked for a take out container. Three times the charm, the take out container was delivered by the third staff member after a considerable wait. This person then cleared our table. Shortly after clearing the table and the long interval since placing our dessert order I commented that we had waited long enough for our dessert and should just cancel it and get our check, shortly after our dessert arrived. But since our table had been now been cleared we had no utensils to eat it. After getting the attention of yet another staff member we got spoons to eat our now half melted icream and platanos. For the most part our server was nonexistant except to take our order and deliver our check (reflected in tip) The last time we ate here the service was spot on. So maybe it deserves another try, but it will be a long time before I might be willing to try again.

I'd like to begin this review with "Woohoo! As good as it gets!". My wife and I along with my sister traveled to Anitgo (from California) with our mother for her family reunion. She was born just outside of town some 85 years ago. We've spent several days, tried most of the popular resturants in town. Honestly, we kinda avoided this place, figuring "how good could mexican food be in northern Wisonsin?" So, tonight was to be our last meal here before heading back to Milwaukee for our flight home. Man, am I glad we tried it. This is not your bland "americanized" mexican food. It's what I would call taqueria food in a pretty nice setting. Nothing fancy, but clean, light and "friendly". The drink special was $1.99 lime margeritas, so we promply ordered up four. Great drinks, not the best, but certainly no complaints. My wife and I shared the El Tequila fajitas (for two), Sis ordered a chili relleno chicken enchalada combo, and mom had a chalupa. Of-course these plates all came with your standard rice, beans, sour cream, guac, etc. Our fajitas were some of best we've ever had. Two seperate plates of rice and beans, as well as two sizziling plates of shrimp, chicken, steak and chorizo, peppers and onions. So much food we had trouble finishing it all. Sis's meal was good and so was Moms. Service was excellent. Food came fast and hot. Again, no complaints and highly recommended. Great Mexican food in Antigo? How woulda thunk eh?

My wife and I ate there tonight. The food was very good to excellent. First of all the decorating scheme is crisp, fresh and airy: sort of nouveaux Mexican to coin a term. I had the deep fried tilapia which was tasty. It had a very light breading. Their rice is subtly spiced and very good. The salad was OK. I had a side order of re fried beans. They were creamy with some sort of cheese sprinkled on top: quite tasty and satisfying. I tried some of my wife's fish tacos: very good. I confirmed Todd's statement: the chips are made on site.

Our friends took us here a few years ago when we were in town visiting. We were really surprised how good the food was, the atmosphere was very nice and the drinks were amazing! Had a lot of fun!!

O.K., so El Tequila remains near the top of my list, but, my most recent visit was disappointing. I tend to order the same items, and what I ordered was not the same quality as previous visits. Also, chips were not refreshed and were not offered after the first basket was eaten. I know they would have been brought had I asked, but should I have to? Don't get me wrong, it's still the best mexican food in town, but they're slipping a tad. Finally, the tres leches cake, which I have had before was not nearly as good. I lived in Miami for many years and this tres leches was below average.

Wow! In Wausau overnight and ended up at El Tequila based on the Yelp reviews. Were they spot on. Some of the best Mexican food. We had the guacamole, original margaritas (2 for 1) Tacos Carnitas, and Beef Chimi. Each was great! We even had a second round on the 'ritas!

Wow, at first I thought this place may be a nice taste of home. The guacamole was a little weak, strike one. I can't believe that this shack has the audacity to call its product Mexican food. I've had better "Mexican" food at a place called Mexican Cafe in Beijing, China. Also service was terribly slow and annoying. If I was to consider coming back they would need to vastly improve the quality of food as well as their service time. If quality is improved then I may come back, but not till then. Quality food and good service are necessary for success. Otherwise, forget it.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
