I don't think the food quality justified the cost.

My wife and I went here for our anniversary. We wanted to go some place a little nicer to celebrate and this fit exactly what we were looking for. The quality of the food was exactly what I was expecting given the price and the reviews I had read. However, I only gave it three stars because the flavor was really lacking. The food was prepared very well but the flavor was blasé. Flavor is the most important thing to me when I eat out and it was definitely lacking here.

Food is great at City Grill. I would say it was upscale bistro style. Love the atmosphere. Highly reccommend.

Cute place, nice ambience. Food was decent but overpriced. There are better meals to be had for less money in Wausau.

I went here with my fiancé and we were not disappointed at all. The BBQ chicken nachos for the appetizer! Oh my goodness! I can't believe how good they were! Believe me, I was mad when my fiancé ordered those instead of the spinach dip that we order literally EVERY place we go to, but I am so happy he did. They are amazing! He got the swordfish and it was pretty good, the risotto was perfect though! I got the shrimp pasta and I was very happy! The shrimp were huge and the portion sizes are awesome. We had a bottle of wine too and the total was under 100 which isn't bad for a nicer place with an app, two entrees, and a bottle of wine. MAKE SURE YOU EAT THE ROLLS AND SPREAD!! I don't know what spread they use but it's one of the best i have ever tried.

A friend and I visited this restaurant while skiing at Granite Peak as it seemed to be one of the best options available in the area. We enjoyed this spot. The service is good and the ambiance is lovely. Everything from the seating, granite bar tops, and ornate glass art on display is in good taste. The food is nicely displayed but is nothing special. The salmon my friend ordered was flavorful and not a bit fishy. Admittedly, the pasta with vegetables I ordered was a bit bland, but we still enjoyed our experience.

We had a very good experience, overall. The food was very good. I ordered the night's special, salmon with a savory peach sauce, along with Parmesan risotto. My girlfriend ordered the chicken saltimbocca. It was very tasty. Along with our main courses, our table had very well-prepared drinks including a Makers Mark old fashioned pressed and martinis. We had Jeff as our waiter. The service was great. Aside from almost being seated in the bar, even with reservations ( they did find us a table in the dining room) and some luke warm coffee, the experience was outstanding. I will also say prices are a little high, even for the level of food and ambiance.

Went here at lunch. Nice place. The menu was nothing special. I had the patty melt with chips. Both were really good. I just expected something out of the ordinary. The staff was great.

Good meal. Beautiful decor and great service. Went on a Saturday night. Good pace with drinks, apps and meal. Some live music. Server Jayson was attentive and knowledgeable.

The food was excellent and our server was very knowledgable about the items on the menu. I have heard bad reviews about this place in the past, but it proved to be the complete oppisite. It's an excellent place for a nice dinner!

I went here with a friend. Given the people walking into the place that day and the look of it on the outside, it seemed more upscale than I were used to. And it was. But, never a problem in my book. Because there wasn't seating available at any of the tables, the lady who greeted/seated us ended giving us an entire booth to our selves, blocking off the second booth next to us. It was really nice, with a decent view of outside (if you're tall enough). Light music in the background, not that noisy even though it were moderately full (and hosting a party/event in back room). There is a full bar with a few TVs. TVs weren't loud or distracting. Our appetizer was the spinach & artichoke dip. This was the BEST version if the spinach and artichoke dip I have EVER had. This is one of my favorite type of dips and I get it anywhere I can. I live in madison, but would definitely go back for the dip alone. That good. The server was the best I have ever had. He wasn't overly enthusiastic but very nice & sweet. It was as if our comfort and enjoyment of the entire City Grill experience was his sole purpose in life. Is this how the rich dine? haha I ordered the jambalaya and my friend/date ordered steak (with au jus and potatoes and one more side I think). Both were amazing! They didn't flake on the spices in the jambalaya-- It was perfectly spicy! But that could be a bit too spicy for some. You are warned. It was about as good as from a Creole cook! I tried a bite of the steak and I could understand why he felt like he were in heaven. Perfection. I had a pomegranate martini (not sure of the full name) but it were perfect. I don't know how I settled at just one... It was amazing. By the end of our night, I definitely had leftover jambalaya (the spinach & artichoke dip was pretty filling and barely left room for my entree). I accidentally broke my martini glass before leaving (plate slid and bumped into it, wasn't drunk!) but both server and the lady that greeted & seated us were very nice about it and took good & proper care of the situation. Did I mention how much I LOVED the server?? I wish I remembered his name. Now, I'm giving 5 stars because I enjoyed the entire experience (from greeting to eating). But, it were pricy and some might give less stars because of it. But given how good the place, food, and people were, I think it's worth the price. If you get a chance to visit Wausau, pay a visit to the City Grill. You won't regret it!

Yes I know it's in the hotel. It's how we ended up here in the first place. After three visits I have yet to be disappointed in any aspect of my experience. The food is outstanding. Well made, fresh, and just plain delicious. We've had the crab cakes- crispy outside and tender inside without being bready- the fish is alway great. I particularly enjoyed the sea bass both salt crusted and with the romesco sauce. The tenderloin was outstanding. And probably the hardest thing to get right, the risotto, was perfect. Lastly, the service. Whether we eat late at the bar or at an actual table, the servers have always been top notch. Candid, friendly, and attentive. Chris, in particular, is fantastic! As is Rachel. It's not inexpensive, nor should it be. Great place to go Wausau!

Came here for a client lunch the other day and wow...so darn good. I had the chopped salad and for the app I tasted the nachos. I could have eaten the whole order of nachos then had another one. It was that good. I would highly recommend this place and will be back on the next business trip.

Been there 2 times with same results. Pros: looks classy Cons: When my wife and I first entered the door way, there was no host. We waited for about 8 minutes for a host to arrive. There was nobody in line and the place wasnt that busy. Over price for the quality of food. My steak was dry and the fish was dry. It seemed after the food was cooked they let it sit on the counter for a to long before serving it to us. The waitress asked how's everything, I said the food is kinda dry. She said she was sorry to hear that and if we were interested in desert. I laugh to myself and will never go there again.

I ate here twice during my business trip to Wausau. Staying at the Jefferson Street Inn, this restaurant located next to lobby is convenient and a nice place to share food and drink with friends and clients. I had two different experiences, first night food was excellent. Dinner -salmon melted in my mouth - delicious and prepared to perfection. Service was so-so. I ate at the bar and understanding it was a Sunday might, staff was more concerned about their tasks than noticing I was there. On my second visit the service was exceptional! The appetizers - platter with toasted bread, olive pate and stacked chopped tomato with cheese along with an order of the signature blue potato chips did nothing for me personally, but our server Rachel was top notch! Attentive, friendly, accommodating and responsive.

I dined at the bar with a client, and ended up being embarrassed by my choice. Given the dynamic with my guest, it was hard to offer feedback during dinner. Other than the decor, it's hard to find a positive here. The night got off to a rocky start - my drink came in a glass that had a chipped edge, which happens, but the bartender was clearly put out when I asked for a replacement. No apology, lots of attitude. The ahi tuna appetizer was good, but looking back, was an indication of things to come. The edamame was swimming in a balsamic reduction, which was also running under the tuna. We then ordered the wedge, which was again drowning in dressing. I ordered the scallop entree, my companion ordered the rib eye. Both were swimming in sauces - "lobster creme", and "port reduction". They had basically poured about a half a bottle of pre made sauce on each plate. In addition to the copious amounts of sauce, the scallops were over salted and completely tough, and the ribeye was extremely fatty. To top off the evening, the bartender couldn't be bothered to speak to us. She cleared our plates without offering desert or another beverage. We had to ask for the check, which she plopped on the bar without a word to us. I will never be back. I'm in Wausau frequently for business, this establishment will not be on my list in the future.

Slow service. It seemed to take forever to get waitress back after we asked for one more minute. We gave waitress our credit card to pay. Instead of ringing us up, she proceeded to clear off the dishes from our table. The bleu cheese chips had little cheeses and little bleu taste. The pesto chicken was flat tasting with little pesto. When we asked for potatoes to go with the $12 egg dish we were charged an extra $2.50. This was a disappointing experience. Thanks for reading. The Bike Chaplain

I am staying in the hotel and ordered room service from here . The very BEST crab cakes I have ever eaten ! Full of crab and not a ton of breading , the sauce is so good and a little spicy . Steak was delicious but not melt in your mouth . I ordered the ribeye ( hey I am a Texas Girl) and maybe I am just used to super tender beef . It was very tasty however . The green beans were tender crisp like I like them , the mash was good and creamy . I will agree with the review about the spread and bread ..... It's so yummy but I can't place all the flavors , don't miss it .

Had a very good meal of short ribs and a Caesar salad. Fast service at the bar even after they got busy, this place makes me want to stay at the Jefferson Inn again as opposed to the chain hotels. Thank you!

City Grill gives Wausau a progressive upscale bistro that would normally be found in larger cities. I've eaten here three times with great results each time. Food options are plentiful with fancy plate presentations. Especially notable is the freindly, engaging wait staff. Visited after Exhibitour one night and our group only ordered a drink and dessert. We were still treated to an enjoyable waiter who paid alot of attention to our group and made us feel welcome. You have to ask the waiter for the kids menu as they didn't have printed kids menus. Prices are a bit high($100 for a family of 5) but a unique dining experience in Wausau.

The City Grill calls itself "An American Bistro". It is located in the Jefferson Street Inn, a very nice hotel located downtown Wausau. The place is elegant. Very nicely done. I had lunch there that was over the top. Everything from the service to the plate presentation was done with style. Top that off with excellent food and you will know why I gave The City Grill five stars. I was in a small group and the food choices went from the basic to all out. I had a turkey sandwich that was so tasty I had a hard time setting it down to try the soup. The soup was very good. Others in the group had sandwiches and salads. They were all very good. There was not one bad thing I could say about the lunch. The prices are a little above average, but not out of line when you taste the food.

The City Grill is a great place to be after work. Every time I go, I get the Top Sirloin, medium-well with mashed potatos. I must say, every time the steak comes out pefect! I would recommend making reservations if you have a large group and expect to wait if the place is full. I would avoid going here on a Friday and Saturday night since the place is very busy. They have live music through out the week and the drinks at the bar aren't too overly priced. The atmosphere has a very "modern" feel but yet rustic with large wooden beams. Our bill for two last time was $70, but we had two glasses of Merlot, Top Sirloin, & Pork Porterhouse. This is my wife's favorite location to grab a bite to eat.

Nice selection, but not my first choice... It's a nice second though for sure.

Good food, it's in a middle-of-the-road hotel so that sucks, prices suggest they're trying to be super classy, soIi guess if you're with a lady or fella who's into spending money to show that you can, you're good...until they build a Morton's...but then you're just a douche...

The best item we tried was the bruschetta. Great flavor and generous portion. The soup and salad combo was a little disappointing, French onion soup had good flavor but the presentation was very messy. The salad was ok, but not very big and the topping were sparse. Everyone with me enjoyed their meal. I would go back just for the bruschetta.

I had always heard good things about this place so when we had tickets to a show at the Grand Theater we thought we would try it out. Since there was a show that night we made reservations a few days before, when we arrived they had no sign of our reservation, but they could seat us immediately. I noticed that the decor was old and tired; the tables, chairs, and carpet looked to be 20 years old. The menus were in tatters with torn corners and pages falling out, not a good first impression. I ordered the Gorgonzola New York strip with a cup of the clam chowder, the featured soup. The soup arrived and in addition to being very watery and lacking flavor, was barely above room temperature, really. The steak was cooked correctly, medium rare. There was no hint of Gorgonzola to the flavor of the white stuff on top, not really sure what it was. The side of cheddar risotto was really good though. And my wife's salmon was excellent. The prices were pretty high too for what was delivered. An interesting experience.

Pricey, food is ok. I would not go there to eat unless it was some else's choice to go there. Otherwise, it's nice atmosphere. Bar opens until 11pm. They make great mixed drinks!!
