I've been coming here since I was a kid, my family loves it. Great ambiance, outdoor seating for enjoying cocktails and appetizers, amazing walnut balls, walleye sandwiches and especially.... They make a mean whiskey old fashioned!

Situated on the Mississippi River, so beautiful scenery out the big windows. Food is incredibly good. Walleye sandwich I had was tasty. Walnut balls as appetizer was an unusual surprise--yummy with the mustard sauce. The sautéed egg plant was yummy and definitely had garlic Burgers look thick. Great for big groups too. Decent bar and the outdoor area has a shelter for bands in the summer. Judging from photos on the walls, plenty of great old rock bands have passed through there. I'll be back.

Trempealeau was the place I went when I wanted a fancy dinner out while working at the Great River Shakespeare Festival this past summer. The food is pretty good for small town Wisconsin...especially the Walnut Balls and their respective salsa and mustard dips. I felt that prices were, again, fairly reasonable. I didn't have any problems with anyone being pushy, though service is not rapid. I didn't mind that much because the view of the Mississippi and the bluffs are enough to make you lose track of time. Plus they have New Glarus beer on tap. Moon Man, Fat Squirrel. What's to complain about?

We were in the area visiting two of our kids last weekend who live in the La Crosse area and took a small trip over to Perrot State in order to let our son's dog get some exercise as well as take in the beautiful scenery. We had heard good things about the restaurant and we called ahead to see if they had outdoor seating and whether we could bring a dog on the property. They indicated that they could accommodate us. We arrived around 7pm on a Friday and were fortunate to find a spot at a picnic table. The atmosphere of the quaint hotel and the garden area which overlooked the Mississippi River provided the perfect backdrop to enjoy some good food as well as take in the live entertainment which was just setting up as we arrived. Not to sound trite, but the food matched the beauty of the area. I ordered the shrimp skewers which were decent sized shrimp mixed with peppers, onion, zucchini and bacon on rice that contained herbs from their own garden. The thick square pieces of bacon were not the store variety, but are sourced from local farmers. Everything tastes better with bacon. My wife and daughter shared their fresh Tuna dinner. There were a generous serving of sliced Tuna, which was rolled in sesame seeds, seared, and served with black quinoa, tomato, avocado and feta salad. They both enjoyed this along with a Pecan Berry salad mixed greens, pecan, feta, red onion and berries with white balsamic vinaigrette. Our son enjoyed the corn meal crusted Catfish served with wild rice. He must have enjoyed it because there was nothing to share! Everything we had was very fresh. As far as service, because they don't actually provide waitstaff service outside, we had to take the meals to go. However, the staff was extremely accommodating. The server (Jen) was very helpful and made sure that we were notified as soon as our meals were ready. The atmosphere inside the restaurant was well appointed with huge picture windows that allowed diners to view the garden area. All in all, a wonderful summer night in Wisconsin.

The food was great and the atmosphere, while very quiet on the night we went (Sunday night during off-season), was really something special. What a cool old building! I can see the appeal to it during the summer for sure, as it has a beautiful river view. The food was all-around fantastic. It's a little expensive for my blood, but since it was a special occasion we went for the full course and didn't regret any of it. Definitely worth the stop.

My husband and I spent a week traveling the Mississippi to see the autumn colors. We stopped by the Trempealeau Restaurant for dinner and were so glad we did. I love historic atmosphere and when we stepped inside we were immediately welcomed by both its original charm and the friendly staff. I'm also a stickler for local, wholesome food and true to their website statement, Trempealeau Restaurant's food was made from scratch and delicious. My husband had the walleye with a divine kale salad. I had a shrimp skewer. Both meals were excellent, priced accordingly, and served in the timeliness of a supper club. The town of Trempealeau runs right beside the Mississippi River, with the restaurant overlooking the river. There was a gorgeous sunset while we were there and our window seats offered a beautiful view. The river, the town, the Hotel and Restaurant ...they all permeate this sense of time standing still and gracious simplicity. I'm hoping to get back to this area real soon.

While the steak did taste pretty good, I was pretty bummed that I asked for Rare and received Medium Well. Normally I would make a stink, but I just sucked it up and ate slab of meat this time. Great selection of IPA.

Midwesterners love to maximize outdoor time in the summer. If we must be indoors, we want porches, big windows, and fresh breezes. This restaurant's historic farm house ambiance provides this summer time vibe. Request to sit in the beautiful porch that overlooks the Mississippi. You may even catch a barge locking through the lock & dam....things that really excite river rats like me : ) This place is most famous for their walnut balls and walnut burgers. You can even find them at Sea Salt in Minneapolis. I had their panko-crusted walleye last time, and it was nice. They heavily support Wisconsin craft brews on their menu, and have a craft cocktails menu as well. As for cons, the wine by the glass selection could be more exciting, and the prices are very steep for this neck of the woods. I have a feeling this is why it's not as packed as it used to be. The portion sizes are gigantic, so save a few bucks by sharing apps and plates with your peeps!

This place is a gem! From the area but had never been here before. My family, friends, and I have always overlooked this place and chose Sullivan's just a mile or two down the road. I am SO glad we decided to try this place for dinner last night. I was immediately attracted to the fact that their ingredients are from local sources and the mint leaves in my mojito were picked from their garden upon my order. The service was slow but the food was absolutely worth the wait. I feel as though this is part of the atmosphere- no rush, just sit back, enjoy your company and eat mindfully. The staff was friendly and accommodating. They have live music most Thursday and Saturday nights, which was a treat as we enjoyed our meal. I highly recommend this restaurant.

This place is so awesome! Historic, charming and unique. It almost feels like you stepped back in time when you walk in this place. The bartender/clerk was also very helpul and accomodating. The setting, right on the river, is very beautiful and quaint. Nothing about this place feels overly "touristy" or "tainted" by the outside world. A truly one-of-a-kind experience! The one thing I should point out is that you hear the trains passing by VERY loudly at night. For me, this is no big deal, but you may want to consider this if you are a light sleeper.

This place is all about the setting and the ambiance. The historic hotel is... well... historic, which means at lunch in the middle of summer (when we visited) the dining area was quite hot. It would have been far more comfortable after the heat of the day had passed. The menu for lunch was a bit limited. I had a build a burger (I just can't bring myself to eat a Walnut burger, even though this is the place for them). My wife had the BLT. The burger was a bit meat-loafy. However that may be my particular taste as a well caramelized 100% beef patty with a touch of salt and pepper is the perfect burger. No need for fillers in my book. The BLT (which I had a few bites of) was fantastic. I would probably order that next time. We also split the blue chips and salsa. The salsa was a pretty bland pico, and not to my taste either. Prices are slightly high, but not unexpected for the setting and the history. Service was friendly but on the slow side (and it was not particularly crowded either). One final note, we came with our infant son, and were disappointed to not have any changing table in the bathroom.

Food is ok but the location is tops. A local must and worthy stopping spot on a road trip.

This is a gorgeous area, and a lovely getaway spot. I stayed in one of their luxury suites overlooking the river, which includes a jacuzzi and a small gas fireplace. The two suites are definitely within a refurbished building, but it was cozy and warm in November. The hotel has a restaurant and bar with live music to enjoy, and delicious food and drinks. This is a little bit of a young trendy spot in this rural area. One note: there is a commercial train line running along the Mississippi River in this area, and it does run past the hotel at night. It didn't bother me, but if you're sensitive to night noises it may disturb you. Mrs. Sippy's Rivertown Bistro (also in Trempealeau) is a great place to hit up for breakfast the next morning, too!

What I really like about The Trempealeau Hotel is the ambience. It's an old hotel building with the salloon and dining area. It offers nice outdoor seatings facing MIssissippi River. It has a nice grassy area where kids can run around while you enjoy your drinks. The food is ok for the area standard.

A great casual restaurant and entertainment venue. It just so happens that my favorite is the walnut ball appetizer with salsa and spicy mustard. (special recipe of the Trempealeau Hotel is its version of a vegetarian burger called the walnut burger, the precursor to walnut balls). In great Wisconsin tradition, they serve the best Wisconsin beers on tap as well as 1919 rootbeer. I would recommend the peanuts in the shell, a Spotted Cow draft beer, and sitting in the chairs on the deck while watching the Mississippi and the bluffs. If you come the weekend after the Fourth of July, the local festival Catfish Days is on. The hotel's rooms will be booked well in advance and the restaurant does a limited menu, but the bar crowd and volleyball tournament are great.

Please consider taking a break and watching Gordon Ransey work to repair poorly run restaurants. We try so hard to like this place. The property is fantastic. As a youngster we visited "Mexican Joe" the old school owner and had great times. Several attempts have been made to upscale the facility and the decor shows that it was a success. Wonderfully preserved, but not the food. $12 Fish taco begets two 2-3 oz pieces of nicely grilled fish with tired out cabbage slaw on a corn tortilla. A few tiny slices of red onion, jarred avocado sauce in worm like coils and devoid of any tomatoes, cilantro or other goodies found on a fish taco. It's high tomato season in WI and not a speck to be found. A request for hot sauce gets Sriracha, a favorite with us but not a very good pairing with tacos. But since there was no resemblance to a taco it sufficed. I was hungry, so I ate the whole thing anyway. The whiskey and black and tan on an empty stomach needed company. The manager/bartender had no time to discuss. I ate it, so without a complaint, I paid, But perhaps a simple apology? An explanation? All the tomatoes coming into Trempealeau were arrested? Batter out for this well traveled couple. This was our third attempt, 3 strikes, each visit was progressively worse. It's no wonder you won't see locals in this spot. Arrogant management, overpriced slop, in a charming atmosphere.

Love this place! We camp at Perrot State Park down the road every year and we visit the hotel several times while we stay. The food and service are both good. If you like it deep fried, this isn't the place for you. They have no fryer. Pasta, fish, steak, whatever you like, it is delicious. The bartenders are friendly and we have gotten to know them by name. You'll find the owners working there every day taking pride in what they do. Want relaxation? Sit on the deck with a drink overlooking the Mississippi with live music (trains will go by occasionally). Almost all of the bands we've heard there have been really good.

One of the best veggie burgers I have ever had! Made of a mix of walnuts and vegetables this burger has texture and flavor that astound. The restaurant may actually be one of the only great eating establishments in a 50mile radius. Don't miss it, I don't every time we visit.

What a hidden gem! At the corner of the street that overlooks the water, this place had great food! We started with beers and there some unique Midwestern selections. We then tried the coconut shrimp, which was actually grilled on a skewer with toasted coconut on the side. You dipped it the shrimp in the sauce, rolled it in the coconut, and it was great. The pork ribs were the BEST I've had with a sauce that had a little kick. The mashed potatoes had a white cheddar (I think) mix and were the favorite of everyone (we knew a group of motorcyclists who agreed). My cousin had the Cajun chicken, which was pan seared and kept him quiet he ate it so fast! My dad had the steak but it was a little dry but again, he said his dinner could have just been the potatoes. We all had salads as well and a zucchini side so our little tummies were full at the end! All four of us were able to sit outside after dinner and enjoy the peacefulness of the mississippi and watch the trains on the far side of the river as they mingled through the trees. Overall, great experience!

This is a wonderful spot hidden on the gorgeous drive between the Twin Cities and LaCrosse. The food is wonderful - especially the walnut burgers. I am ardently NOT a vegetarian but the richness of the cheese in this veggie burger makes it a special treat on its own and not a substitute for anything. The staff is super friendly, the views of the river on the porches are calming and lovely, and if you pick the right night the music will sweep you away to Jamaica for reggae, rural Mississippi for the blues, or even back in time to Bob Dylan. Make a day trip for lunch or dinner or make a weekend and stay at the hotel or the bungalow cabins as well - you can depart for tremendous hiking and biking directly from the hotel.

Wow, I'm the first to review the Trempealeau Hotel?? Amazing. The Trempealeau Hotel is one of the really wonderful gems in the Midwest. It's hosted the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and has a reggae fest, as well as a summer long concert series all year. They have some great lunch specials, and a fancy walnut burger. They have some great Root Beer, and they're one of the centerpieces of Catfish Days every year. Can't beat it.
