Exhausted from running an obscene amount of mileage earlier in the day, my friends and I decided to stop in here while in the area for Grandma's marathon weekend. As others noted this place is your classic dive bar with a narrow entrance and pleasantly grumpy servers to match. The menu is pretty simple, just burgers and fries and not much else. Because it was marathon weekend it was really busy but our server managed to take our orders and bring out the food in a timely manner. Fries are ordered separately from burgers but are relatively cheap and they give you decent serving of them. I ordered the mushroom and Swiss burger and thought that it was really excellent and perfectly seasoned. The price for my burger, an order of fries and a New Glarus beer when it was all said and done was under $10. My friends and I parked in the lot across the street from the bar and I noticed that there was also ample street parking as well. It's cash only but they have an ATM to use if you forget to bring some with you.

Best burger and fries. And you can't beat the price. Recommend this, but go in the off season, I heard it gets real crowded in the summer.

The Anchor Bar's burgers may be cheap but are no better than any other bar burger. The place is dirty and the waitresses are rude. There is no charm in being sworn at. If you don't mind dirty walls, floors, and waitresses swearing at you , then this is the place. In my opinion, all hype.

Every trip to Duluth deserves a detour to Superior, with a stop at this true dive bar. Expect hit or miss service, sprinkled with friendly and sometimes surly patrons. Enduring all of this makes it worth one of the best burgers EVER and fresh cut fries like my momma used to fry up in her old fryin' pan. The Jalapeno Cheddar Burger is hot, but sooooo juicy and delicious. Only to be topped by the mouthwatering T.W.A. Whaleback...a double with bacon and BBQ sauce. Not only is the food great, the price is easy on the pocketbook. Two beers, two burgers, an order of fries...$14 plus tip.

The only time I enjoy going to Wisconsin is to eat at the Anchor Bar! Great Hamburgers at great prices! Their Fries are are okay, the burger will make up for it! Make sure you have cash and your not in a rush!

The Anchor is over rated. Yes, it i cheap, yes, it is greasy, yes, it was on DDD. It is the epitome of a dive bar. Random flotsam and jetsam of the nautical set all over the place, and very little seating makes for long waits and cramped quarters for eating. The schtick of the rude wait staff gets old pretty quickly as well. They do have a great beer menu and was surprised at how many craft brews from around the country were available at decent prices, nothing over $4. The burgers are cooked fresh and the fries are chopped in the kitchen and fried right away. I like they are cooked in peanut oil instead of vegetable. This is your standard greasy gut-bomb burger that is alright once in a while. I don;t think it is Gods gift to the burger like a lot of people. There are much better burgers to be had in the area.

Where else can you get a 1/3lb bacon cheeseburger for $3.75 that's actually good? They will even toss on some fried or raw onions for free. Love this this dive bar!!! It is packed with nautical memorabilia on the walls and at 3:00 there were a nice group of older locals there getting their burger on but it slowly changes at the evening progresses and gets louder as the age medium gets younger.

Went back a few weeks after my last review, I don't know that I will rush back next time I come home. The service is really poor. We sat on the patio, knowing that service is slow out there I went to the bar to order I stood there for over 5 minutes watching the bartender walk to the back texting or doing something on his phone. I'm sorry if your bar is packed put your phone away! The waitress excused herself and before giving me a chance to move out of her way plowed past me with a big sigh. I put our order for four in got a few beers and went outside to join the group. We sat at a dirty table for 10 plus minutes with the waitstaff repeatedly walking past. We finally had to stop someone walking past to clear the table, then they only took part of the dirty stuff, I put the rest on a table next to us when the people at it left. When the food came it wasn't done correctly fried onions on a burger that wanted none of couse all melted into the cheese, and no onions on another. We didn't bother asking for corrections. My burger was incredibly dry and overcooked. One last thing that really irked me, there was an elderly couple sitting behind me. The waitress didn't take the time to give them any customer service. They were trying to ask questions about the menu and she cut them off multiple times in a very rude tone. I think I would have walked out if she talked to me in that manner. Anyhow it was a good burger joint I think I'll take my business down the road to the Who's Bar or just stay in Duluth next time. There are many other delicious burgers to try.

Great burgers and solid fries in a classic dive bar, what's not to like? Seriously, the Anchor Bar is cramped, dark, crowded with bric-a-brac, and in a nondescript part of town just a few blocks off the bridge over to Duluth and Minnesota...but when the burgers are this good who cares! First off, bring cash. Second, you are on your own to grab yourself a place to sit; it's survival of the fittest and quickest in a joint this small and crowded. Nobody is going to help you out, shove in when and where you can. And if you can, definitely sit at the bar. This ancient, warped, scratched up slab of wood (properly sharply angled back to the keep side so the odd spilled drink doesn't end up all over the patrons) looks about 100 years old and like it has some stories to tell. Same deal with the cavalcade of nautical and other paraphernalia hung, fastened and attached to any surface that isn't moving...and some that are. The menu is simple and to the point, a couple dozen burgers with a few other sandwiches (BLT, grilled cheese, etc.) thrown in and french fries as the lone side. That's it. My first (and so far only) visit I ordered the Baconburger and fries, and it was one of the best burgers I've ever had. Cooked just right, simply, cleanly. Fresh hot fries just the right thickness to get that mix of crispy crunch exterior and starchy interior. Heaven! Food came out of the tiny (and visible from the bar) kitchen surprisingly fast. These folks know what they're doing and they do it well. So if you want a solid burger and fries, a cold beverage to wash it down, dirt cheap, in an authentic neighborhood joint, look no further. Anchor's the way!

Traveling through for some hockey on a Fri afternoon. Thought it would be a good quick bite based on some TV coverage they got as a Dive. And I would highly agree it is 110% dive, hell 200% Just two of us but no place to sit, must have been the lunch rush or tourists. One that was quickly obvious was they were SERIOUSLY under staffed with a poor attitude waitress. Seat yourself, named a table. Dirty and wet, good thing there are paper towels on the table to clean it. but without some soap you won't get that grease level off. Waitress walked by twice, complaining and didn't say a word. Was about to go to the bartender to order myself when he came to the table. Ordered two burgers and fries, one a bacon and the other a blue cheese. along with a beer. Beer came quick, with it being so packed and understaffed, the ticket times were long. Finally got the burger and fries, looked and smelled good, good grease, ordered a choco milk and then had to remind the waitress twice to give it. Asked for the bill as well the 2nd time to get a move on. The objects ALL AROUND the bar are interesting, unique and probably picked up from every garage sale in Superior WI. Being a great dive bar does not mean you have to be a messy, dirty place. Service can still be quick and the help can be nice even if swamped and under staffed. Burgers were very good, as were the home fries, the blue cheese seemed a little different and the big beer was excellent. Would i return yes I would but would want to try a different time or day to see how it goes. Can really see it as a FUN place to hang out with a few friends. Cheap good food, beer and friends can't go wrong but really need to clean up.

This is one of the best hamburgers I have ever ate. I was visiting from Texas and can say I will defiantly be back the next time I am in town. The atmosphere inside was unique and the service was great. There was no doubt the food was freshly made.

As seen on Diners, Drive Inns, & Dives. First thought, this is what I get for watching the food channel. Guy definitely did not stress the DIVE part enough. Beers here are served in full one liter steins (HUGE beers). At first I thought the huge beers were cool. Then I realize it's because the waitress only comes around every fort-night. One could die of thirst while waiting for the waitress if not for the huge beers! The food was good (except for the greasy fries), but I can't say it was worth the hour plus wait after ordering...

GREAT little spot in Superior WI. Since you were heading to Duluth anyway you may as well make a tiny detour for these awesome burgers, cheap beer and, well, cheap beer and awesome burgers. Try the Olive Burger - it will not disappoint!

Friday night in December, busy bar, great people and atmosphere. No kidding! Five of us guys got a table and ordered beers and burgers. Beers arrived quickly and food soon after, so far so good. Got the olive burger and it was really great, French fries are some of the best I have ever had and I have been to a lot of great French fry places. I hate to offer this info to the general public as I don't want to overwhelm the place, but if you want great burgers and fries in a laid back place come here.

  • Annie S.

This place was a bit hard to get to with the road construction, but it is worth it!! The most expensive item on the menu is their 1 pound burger at 6 bucks. I got a Mexican burger and my hubby got the cashew burger and bleu cheese burger. Very juicy and tasty. Service is slow because it is so busy but you can't find food like this for a better value anywhere!

Out of the over 100+ restaurants we've eaten at this has to be #1 for worst service. Blond waitress was rude, non-responsive, had an attitude, never came to our table to check on food quality or need for anything else. We had to ask for our bill and then when asked if we paid her, she acted like it was an imposition to take our money. The food, in my opinion, does not warranty the 'Triple D' endorsement and was nothing special. We asked the waitress if the Bacon Burger was good and she said, 'I don't eat hamburger'. Then why do you work at a hamburger place, if you can't recommend the food? After seeing this place on TV, we were excited to go there as it is close to us, but after eating the food and the waitress with the attitude will not be back. Too bad cause really neat bar with interesting atmosphere and good food, but not unique or outstanding food.

"Pardon my French, but f**k yeah!". These are the words I said to the bartender when she told me my tab. What I had? A 1/3 pound cheeseburger, a basket of fries, and a 24 ounce Fat Tire. I certainly have never found a deal like that anywhere else. By the way, that's not a special nor a happy hour price. That's the prices you'll find listed on the menu. For the quality, hey, out of this world. A darn fine cheeseburger and fries fresh out of the fryer. Don't let the looks deceive you. It looks like the type of place you would expect a dozen Harleys parked out front and Patrick Swayze playing the role as the cooler. The evening I went there I happily observed no fights, no bands playing behind chicken wire, and a staff happy to have you. It is seriously a nice place with a good atmosphere and if you sit outside you may even meet their cats. Bottom line, a great place a a great pace.

Anchor bar makes an incredible burger, with an unbelievably low price tag. In fact, they make dozens of incredible burgers with low price tags, so bring some cash and get a couple. I note cash, because last time I was there, that was the only method of payment that they accepted. But don't worry, you won't need much. In true Wisconsin fashion (says they guy from MN) there beers are big and cheap. Pitchers are under 10 bucks, and you can easily have a good meal and work up a (un)healthy buzz for less than $20. Bring a couple buddies, but be there early, They fill up fast. The enclosed patio is a nice addition, as the interior used to be cramped and smokey. The place still ain't too pretty, but neither am I (or most of the patrons that matter) when sitting next to a pretty plates of burgers and fries.

A complete dive but the burger was fantastic and so was the service. The best $10 I may have ever spent for a burger, fries and a beer!!! I will go back each and every time I am in Superior, WI.

Heard about this place from some buddies who went to college up here. I was told it was a dive with great burgers, and that is exactly what it is. Compared to the twin cities the prices are astoundingly low. A third pound burger is around 3 bucks and a gigantic one pounder is under 6 bucks! Divey, cheap and tasty, these are a few of my favorite things.

  • Ryan F.

Great burgers and fries! The server asked if we would like our daughters burger cut in half because of the portion. Server was great very friendly. I had the Cream Cheese Olive Burger. It was amazing. Place is busy for a reason great food. This place has a outdoor patio but was full because of how nice it was outside. Make the trip worth the drive. Very close to Duluth.

  • Sandi E.

My Favorite Burgers! Service is very slow so be prepared, and bring cash (no plastic or non local checks). Burgers are nice and juicy and fries are cut fresh and tasty. They have a range of burger from plain to cashews and jalapenos. The only thing they don't have is avocado (yep I'm from California). Good selection of beer and the giant mug is the best deal for less than $5. They have Anchor Steam bottles for $2.75 you can't find it that cheap unless you're buying it from the store. Seating is a little wacky, but remember it's a bar! Under 21 is allowed, but they must be with parent....IT IS A BAR!!

  • Yan S.

I've been coming here since 1986! Though it's changed owners since then it is still the best place in the Twin Ports to grab a burger, and $20 will get you and a friend fed each with a couple beers, and that's good beer, not cheap national taps! Word's been out for a while that this place is a winner so expect weekends and even weekday evenings to be pretty busy so plan to get there early, and have a couple beers while you wait for a seat! I've never had any issues with bringing kids here and they really get a kick out of the decor ~ they see something new every time! My favorite is a Cashew Burger with Jalapenos, fried onions, and fries. GDI! Now I want to eat there tonight! :)

Went to this place after seeing it on "diners, drive-in's and dives" with my parents while visiting the northwoods. Disappointed doesn't quite get across how bad we all felt upon leaving. Sure it was cheap, but it should be, as it was the worst burger we ever had, all 3 of us agreed. I had the mushroom and swiss, parents each had the anchor burger. They were over cooked to say the least...no flavor. Meat tasted like dishwater :( Not to mention the waitress asked us each if we wanted fries or chips as though they were included in the price, which they weren't. Maybe Chicago eating has spoiled me, but do yourself a favor and stop at Hardees on tower ave instead!!

I have been eating double cashew and swiss burgers here for the past 12 years. Burgers, fresh cut fries, and a beer for about $6. Cannot beat it. It is a tavern, not a restaurant. Don't expect great service, but count on one of the best burgers you can find. They do not accept credit cards and will I.D.

  • Mark M.

Best burger in the twin ports! Hands down! Might be my favorite greasy burger joint of all time. this place is a tradition in the northland. They are always swamped, especially on Friday's, so get there early or be prepared to stand and wait. They have very limited seating and standing room is quite cramped too. this place is cheap.. I mean for less than $5 you can get a burger with fries...and they have great priced beer too. not just cheap crap beer, but tasty suds from all around the world. My favorite brews come from the New Glarus Brewery and the Anchor usually has a few from that brewer. I go for their jalepeno cheese burger. It is topped with some perfectly spicy peppers and goes down well with a nice beer. Bring cash...no CC accepted.

First off I don't give many 5 star reviews. However Anchor Bar earned it. I've eaten here 3 times and every time has been great. They have the best burgers I've ever had, anywhere. The fries are homemade and you get a heaping portion. The buns look and taste homemade but I assume they get them from a baker. A California burger and fries is $4.25. Perfect burgers, perfect price. Anchor Bar I love you!

No service + no beverages + no food should = no stars. After several suggestions from family members to check out the burgers here we decided to give it a try. Hearing that it could be busy I called ahead and asked how long the waits might be for our party of five. "Your guess is as good as mine" was the terse reply. Should have made a note of that. Drove over from Duluth and found parking right across the street. As we entered the front door I was greeted with exactly what I had been told to expect. Lots of folks enjoying lots of burgers and lots of beer. (It was really hot out.) We waited patiently in the entrance trying to determine who might be the next table to leave. Several groups of patrons at the bar took the next two tables and as we were beginning to get a little discouraged we noticed a group coming in from the patio. We went out and took the only empty table remaining. Settling in and pleased to have a seat we pushed the empty beer steins to an open spot on the table and began to plan our orders. No one came out to serve us. So we waited...... and waited...... and waited..... nothing. Several times baskets of food were delivered to other tables on the patio and each time eye contact was made with the server. She returned inside the restaurant and never came back out to our table.. After 20 minutes (30 including time spent inside) I went in and asked the bartender if anyone was serving on the patio. "Someone should be." Exactly. "I'll send someone out." After another 10 to 15 minutes of waiting we realized, after other patrons told us of 30 minute waits for food after ordering, that we would try our luck down the street at the Thirsty Pagen Brewery with some highly rated local pizza. On the way out the bartender and a server saw us leaving. "Don't worry about it" I said. "Don't worry about WHAT?!?" the server snapped back. So off we went to the Pagen where we were greeted, seated and beveraged in less than 5 minutes after walking through the door. Exactly what we needed after the miserable time at the Anchor.

This is the go-to place for cheap food, cheap beer, and an interesting experience in Superior/Duluth. Their burgers are freshly pattied, the fries are cut minutes before going into the fryer, and the beer comes cold. The jalapeno burger is my choice, and if you ask they can add hot sauce on it if you like it extra spicy. The service can be hit or miss depending on how busy it is, but you don't love the Anchor for the service. If you are looking for an exceptional burger with fries and a pitcher of beer for under $10 (yes $10!!), the Anchor is the place to be. Come with an open mind and enjoy!

  • Joey J.

This place works on so many levels its kind of like the Sears Tower of dive bars. From just a bar perspective, this place would be great. I ordered a "small beer" and the waitress brought me 34 ounces of Summit EPA. She noticed that this was in fact a "large" beer. She charged me the small beer price of $2.00(for about 16 ounces) instead of the large beer price of $2.75. Throw in the fact that this place makes a pretty good burger, complete with hand-cut french fries, and you really can't go wrong here. The fries are a little bit greasy and soft, as opposed to crunchy so some people might knock the Anchor because of that and the wait staff kind of leaves you alone to your conversation instead of being in-your-face. I tend to like these two traits, but others might not I realize. The best part is however that a burger, fries and a beer costs about as much as a burger, fries and soda would at your average fast food chain. Get here soon, before their episode of DIners, Drive-Ins and Dives airs and seating gets even harder to come by.

  • Adam S.

When I first started coming here, they had budweiser on Tap for 85 cents, pop was a dollar. That should say it all, but it really doesn't. They have an extensive bottle selection of beer, cheap mixed drinks that are strong, and dont ask for a frozen drink. To enjoy the anchor, one must be willing to put up with different type of service, and even possibly insulted. I once asked about the super rope behind the bar and if people actually bought it, I was told to shut the F*&* up. Normally, I'd leave, but instead, everyone just laughed. Sadly they replaced their jukebox with a digital monstrosity, I wish they kept the original juke box. One night we took over juke box and played a lot of polka for some reason, this did not sit well with the wait staff, hey, you put it in there...now I go in and hear the black eye peas or katie perry, and I weep inside. Their menu consists of Burgers and "other grub". I've only had burgers. I get Anchor Supreme, which is delicious, but they have burger with cashews on it and it's very good. Their fries are fresh cut. As to seating, it's usually packed and that ass hat guy fieri may have ruined it by showing up, but I either went for the bar, barber chairs, or the "library". Just a warning, there are no windows. So if you go for lunch, expect to be blinded by the sun when you come out.

The best place to get a great burger and fries for dirt cheap. Some of the best burgers in town and arguably the best. The atmosphere sucks and it's small and crowded but all that doesnt matter because the food is so good. The Anchor was even featured on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dive's!

Incredible. I got a 1 lb gallybuster burger and my wife had a bacon cheeseburger. Both with fries. Fantasticly juicy. And a picture of beer all for $16.50. I will be coming back.

Where can you get a burger and a beer for less than $5-6? The Anchor, sir. The Anchor has a nautical theme, complete with a life ring from the Edmund Fitzgerald. Don't expect overly perky waitstaff. This is the kind of place where, if you ask "What's on tap?" the answer will be "Beer." This place has some of the best food in Superior. Don't neglect the fries- they are amazing.

    (5)
  • Nick C.

This place rules. I spent the previous weekend in Duluth and upon arrival we headed here for a burger and a beer to start the night. The decor of the place plays a nautical theme, which makes sense considering the namesake. When ordering a "big" beer, I assumed it meant the usual 22 oz fare, but when they say big.....they mean it. 34 ounces of goodness for $2.75. The chairs we sat in were old barber chairs, complete with levers and a swivel. The food is pretty good. Far, far better than your average bar burger. They do some interesting variations as well. My friend had a burger with cream cheese and olives atop it. Cheap, too. I think for the three of us it was around $21. Other perks of this bar include $2.50 pitchers on Monday night, and every night after 10 PM. Its basically an alcoholics paradise. Also, mystery shots for $1.50!!! Is it Cutty Sark? Is it paint thinner? Who knows! Where else can you spend $1.50 for such mysterious excitement? I didnt participate in this mysterious sexy experiment, but I will next time I promise. Im actually a little envious that this place isnt in the Minneapolis area, to be honest.

This place has attitude and you do not want to be on the wrong side of it. If you are willing to take the chance you will love the food and drinks. I know I do. Great cheeseburgers and homemade style fries. Sometimes tough to get a spot to sit. Sometimes a long wait for food. It is worth all of it. Fantastic prices as well! Burger and fries for $6 or so.

    (5)
  • Kelley M.

Don't go here for the service or the social interactions. You'll see very sad situations of drunken parents with children in tow playing psuedo-slot machines (ahhhh, the spirit of the great town of Superior!). The waitresses are rode hard and put up wet - rude as the day is long. That said, THEY HAVE KILLER BURGERS AND STRONG DRINKS!! You must try the cream cheese & green olive burger - TO DIE FOR! Bring cash or prepare to use their ATM. And be patient when you arrive, its always packed.

A tiny little bar and burger joint, located right in Superior. This place is delicious. They make all there burgers fresh for you, and they taste immaculate! There isn't very much seating, so when this place gets busy, it gets packed! I was here once, and the power went out on us, it was funny, there was no power, but luckily for us, we had just gotten our food right before it had happened! We got to eat by candle light, and if you've been in here, you know that there is no window light, it is all man-made lights on the ceiling! Anyways we stayed and ate, why would we leave? It is a sorta dingy place to go eat and drink, but it is totally one of those fun little whole in the wall burger and bar places that you cannot pass up.. good food, tiny place.. really, super good!

Delicious burgers at fantastic low prices. The measuring stick for all burger places in the Twin Ports. Expect long waits and mediocre customer service. But the wait is worth it. Recommended for fans of dive bars and all things nautical.

After seeing Anchor Bar on Triple D, we thought we'd check it since we were in the area. From the outside (and the inside too, in a way), the Anchor appears to be a very rundown dive, but...well...it is. Despite this, the interior is awesome, filled with nautical artifacts/junk included a life ring from the Edmund Fitzgerald. The burgers (pretty much the only thing on the menu) can be topped with combinations such as the cream cheese and green olive burger (which I ordered with jalapenos) or the cashew and Swiss cheese burger, but are, unfortunately, not cooked to order. They, although delicious, lack juiciness (I could make a juicier burger at home), which is understandable for a burger cooked well done. Every burger comes with dill pickle chips and fresh-cut fries, which are full of potato flavor but are limp, oily, and lack salt, despite tasting pretty good. Regardless of the food, Anchor Bar is an unusual spot that was well worth the visit.

Nothing phony, plastic or contrived about this place. It's the most authentic saloon in the midwest, and you will never get a better burger (with REAL french fries) for the price. A must stop on the way to the nort woods...

Always a treat. Definitely a dive bar, and maybe not a good place to go to impress a date (depending on the date of course), but I've yet to leave this place unsatisfied. Low cost helps!

Staff- rude but expected. Food - cheap but could have been executed much better. Most bacon for the price my husband had ever seen. Had the experience don't know that well go back

A double cheeseburger, hand-cut fries, and a large Sierra Nevada tap for $7. What else do you need to know? Most everything the other reviewers have said is true (even the bad), but you must make the scene at the Anchor by 12:15 or you'll be sorry.

    (4)
  • Juana H.

Ditto to all that's been said before me. I always go when I'm in the area and always order the cream cheese and olive burger. I keep saying I'm going to try something else but there is nowhere I know that makes that burger and it is so damn tasty!!! Thank you all the staff and owners at the Anchor

I was brought here by a tour guide while in town for a few days. WHile the interior was quite fascinating (a nautical theme), the real surprise was the cheap prices. Most of the burgers cost around $3.50, and that is not a slider with a handful of frozen french fries on the side. The $3.50 buys you a yummy medium-sized burger with a large portion of freshly-made fries. The two of us bought two burger plates and a pop for seven bucks and change, a meal that would probably cost at least 13 dollars in the Seattle area (my home) I hope to go back again soon.

Got here on what we considered my wife's food tour birthday. It has been a very long 20 years ago that I ate myself. It is still the same unbelievable burgers at extremely low cost. To galley busters, a California burger and one very spicy jalapeño cream cheese burger And let's not forget BEER! It was getting late and this was our last stop before heading back to the twin cities. Not my best decision but I took on the enormous galley buster. I barely made it thru it but I did. This hands down is the best burger I have ever eaten. Moist tender and gear flavor. Oh the fries, they are fresh cut, something that seems to be hard to find. This is a must stop if you just want a burger. No regrets 20 years ago and no regrets again. Won't be 20 years before we stop back. Trying to find an excuse to head back up north already. Well worth the pit stop. Make sure you stop.

Love the atmosphere here. Burgers are great and they have cheap beer! Be warned, this place only accepts cash and checks, no cards. It wasn't the first time I've been here but this time we came in later and the place was pretty quiet, but the bartender was a nice lady who definitely takes customer service seriously. Stayed late and was open till two. Highly recommend people to stop here if they are in the area!

Best bar. Best burgers. Best prices. Best look of disdain on the bartenders grizzled visage, for she was a salty one. This bar is the first to visit on the twin ports, hands down. You tourists better line up.

There were no tables to sit at so we sat at the bar. Waited 20 minutes just to get a drink and to order burgers. As we sat there for an hour waiting for the burgers the staff were so rude, talked about how much they hated there jobs there. As we sat at the bar you can see where the cook is making the fries and burgers we noticed as she came out of the kitchen she had a Cigerette hanging out of her mouth (yes the Cigerette was lite), sweat pouring down her face dripping on the food long stringy greasy hair not plulled back we got really grossed out, we canceled our order paid for the drinks and left. Will never go back. Yep, the burgers maybe good but not with someone's sweat dripping in the food.

Small little nautical bar in Superior, WI. Cream cheese and olive burger is my fav. Fries aren't THE Best, but ok. One of my favorite places to stop with some friends to grab a burger and have a beer

Yes it is a Dive Bar on purpose and the burgers and fries were cheaper than most but it was a decent burger not a great knock your socks off burger. The menus and table were sticky like they haven't been cleaned since who knows when. We went but won't be back. Not worth it.

Burgers were very good but the atmosphere is what will keep me from returning. Was so much memorabilia on the walls! It was also very crowded.

Anchor Burgers = AWESOME!!! These burgers are sooooooooo delicious!!! Pros: Juicy, tender, flavorful, good size, fresh, great staff, and did I mention they serve BEER ON TAP!! how great is that?! The fries are pretty amazing as well... If you're ever nearby, and would like a juicy burger? Well, don't pass this up, something you'll regret later on. =)

There's a reason this place is famous. Can't say anything anyone else hasn't. Great burgers. Great fries. Excellent beer selection. Staff might be a tad over worked. Not the quickest and most personable staff ever but they get the job done. Once you get a massive amount of meat in your hands you won't care anyways. Really reasonably priced. Deliciously divey. Will come back the next time I'm in the area.

Burgers were great.... Burgers were cooked to perfection, not over done , not undercooked.....Bun was great...I had the blue cheese burger , was wonderful, my wife had the cashew and Swiss burger which was unique and great, We sat at the bar, the service was poor. I think the "poor service" dive bar was a put on though the staff seemed very capable but almost playing up the poor service to dive bar standard.......my suggestion, order a tall cold glass of Grainbelt and any burger will be great!!!

I have no idea why this place has such a great reputation, or any good reviews ! I would give it 3 stars for character, with all the great lakes, maritime decor, and it is cheap, but that is it. The burgers were overcooked, dry, unseasoned, and tasteless, on an untoasted , cold bun. The fries may be fresh cut, but they were soggy, undercooked and greasy ! Maybe the regular cook had the day off ? I am guessing that is not the case, judging by the dirt, on his shirt. I have got to think that any other, 100+ dive bars in Superior, has a better burger !

Quick service, huge tasty burgers for ridiculously inexpensive prices. Fresh cut fries are amazing too! Very glad the brother in law brought me in...also good beer;)

Great burgers! Had the mushroom Swiss with fresh cut fries. Burger $4.25, fries $1.25 and a bottle of beer - $2.75. Can't beat that!

Great food, terrible service. We asked for water 3 times and never got it. I ended up going to the bar to get it myself. The burgers and fries were delicious and they were served very quickly. And it's super cheap.

No where else can I think of a place where you can sit down, order 2 cheese burgers with fries, and a massive tap beer and spend less than $15 with tip! Burgers were great, atmosphere was fun, and the beer was cold. It's a must stop when in the Superior area.

The food isn't as great as The Food Network made it out to be. The service is HORRIBLE. the women who work there are rude and act like their job is the worst place ever to be. They should be lucky they have one. You have to pay attention to how many people don't have have food. Count the tables without and add about 10 minutes to each. That's how long it will take to get your food. Make sure you bring cash because they will make you use their ATM machine to pull out cash to pay while you are also paying them to use use it. I will not return anytime soon.

Great burgers, awesome fries and the best prices! Everything you would expect from a dive bar. I'll be back!

We stopped in on Memorial Day and they were kind of busy. We walked in the door and got the impression we were in the way and they didn't want us there. A table finally cleared up and we were seated. The female waitress came over and took our drink order and I was still ordering and she walked away. When our food did arrive my burger was completely over cooked and black the fries were cold and soggy. We really don't travel to Superior that often however we for sure will never be back here! Aweful service and over cooked food.

The epitome of a dive bar. Burgers, beer and staff that doesn't care about you or your money and that means no fake smiles or corny attitudes. Love it.

Great burgers almost too awesome. If I lived anywhere near this place I would be drunk and fat all the time because I can't get enough of there food. I would probably also be divorced and I would be ok with it. Can't wait to head back here again. Cheap delicious and friendly. Oh and not to mention the decor in here is genius and pretty awesome

Hands down best burgers in the Northland and the price cannot be beat. On your first visit you may feel a touch claustrophobic and maybe this isn't the place for you (a bit dark and a bit worn on the inside) but don't let this scare you away. Gather your courage and stay awhile you will not regret it. The menu it's small and consists prey much wholly of burgers and fries. Order burgers and fries, everyone of the burgers is a winner.

I usually go with friends late on Monday nights for cheap pitchers of beer. The burgers are cheap and fantastic. Best I've had in a while. You get the right amount of fries with it too. Service is practically non-existent we normally order at the bar. Also they only accept cash or check. That's sort of weird. The decor is kind of neat though.

I had heard rumblings of this place from friends and co-workers that I MUST hit this place up when i'm in Duluth. Well, I finally stopped by this joint and boy was it an experience. Now, before I go on, be warned that you will NOT get 5 star service; you won't even get 1 star service. This place does NOT take credit cards, cash/check only. You only go to Anchor Bar for great burgers and cheap pitchers of beer. It's not a place you go for Sunday Brunch with your family. You've. Been. Warned. We parked out back and made our way through the make-shift temp back door, cigarette/spit bucket included. Once you walk in, it's dark, slightly damp and you're afraid you'll catch something just sitting on any surface. It's seat yourself and chances are you'll have to share a table with a few people (we did!). The menu is simple, order a burger, get some fries and order your choice of cheap beer (bottle, tap, pitcher). We ordered the Bacon Burger, Pineapple Burger, a bunch of fries and a pitcher of Grainbelt. Served with no smile, major attitude and the feeling that you were NOT important. Beer arrived quickly with glasses slammed on the table (like SLAMMED). The food arrived shortly after that. The first thing I noticed was half the bacon was burnt and for fear of getting a bandaid in my burger, I didn't say anything; this isn't the place to complain about ANYTHING. Regardless of burnt bacon (black and brittle) I dug into the glorious burger. Simple, greasy, filled with flavor; something that will hit the spot every time. The fries, what can I say about the fries except they're AMAZING. For all the food and beer we got, the total bill was $14.75. That's right. $14.75. We laughed when the bill arrived and thought it was a joke or that our amazing waitress missed something. The food is great, the service is awful and the atmosphere is nothing you can find anywhere else.

Not a bad spot for Superior. Their weird decor is fantastic. The on tap selection is lacking good beer but they have an adequate selection of bottles on hand. Doh! They only take cash, but they have their own ATM...albeit a dishonest ATM that claims a $2.50 fee while really they gouge you for $3.50. Boxes of cooking oil were stacked in the back last time we visited so I knew not to order anything!

As good as it gets for burgers, folks. Fries are tossed in the fryer within 2 seconds of being cut.

This place embodies the spirit of the Edmond Fitzgerald and all salties and lakers. You haven't been to Superior of you haven't had a burger and a tall beer at the Anchor. Cheers.

I love dive bars and I love the food at this place. Burgers and fries are about the only items on the menu but oooohhhhhh those burgers and fries are good. I've been here twice. The first time on a Saturday so I can't say how good or bad the service was. I think it was good. They were REALLY busy. But today? 4 tables and 3 bar stools open, none of them clean and toweled off and the waitress standing at the end of the bar chatting. As I sit here 4 tables have come in and had to sit at tables that haven't been cleaned. What's more, once the dirty dishes were removed the tables were never washed. Ketchup, mustard, crumbs, water. I hope it's just this VERY incompetent waitress. If not, the health department should get involved!

Was expecting a lot more from all the reviews. Burger was ok, fries were fresh cut but very greasy, service was terrible---asked the waitress a simple question and all we got was a rude attitude. World famous....very doubtful. I can get a much better burger from my local bars!

Humm, heard so much about this place we had to check it out. A Saturday at noon may not have been the best time however. It was very busy to say the least and we had to wait for a table plus had to wait a long time for our food. The burger was very good, worth the wait. But the fries were not good. Soggy and all stuck together. Interesting decor, the server was ok and took our orders quickly. Then we waited..... Ok, been there, no need to go back. Good burgers are not that hard to find.

The Anchor is one of the more fun bars in Superior, and a great place to eat in a dive/greasy spoon sort of way.... With a Great Lakes nautical theme going on. Burgers, fries and sandwiches only - but they're darn fine if that's your style. Beer is cheap and plentiful, but be warned they don't accept credit cards - also the ATM claims a 2.50 fee and charges 3.50. All the crazy antique decorations will distract you sufficiently, though and the sassy bartenderesses may help.

Dark, dirty, dive bar with AMAZING burgers! I have been visiting Anchor Bar for almost 20 years and it gets better every time!

I ate a burger that wasn't bad, and had some fries for lunch. Pricing is pretty decent. Everyone in the area says this is the best burger, but I disagree.

Yuck! Food isn't good at all as claimed. Greasy mess. Service was even worse. I worked at a maximum security prison, the inmates were more courteous than the staff here.

This places scores huge points in my book for a couple of reasons: 1) The ambiance is great! It is pretty run down, but the old character of the space is quite quaint. The Anchor Bar was recently featured on Food Network's Diners, Drive ins, and Dives as well! We scored the corner table by the front door, where there are tons of old board games to play! Slapjack was calling our names while we waited for food to arrive. 2) The food is very good and cheap! The boo and I each got a burger and fries, along with a pitcher of beer for a whopping total of $11. Cheap date if you ask me. The blue cheese burger does come drenched in sauce (refer to la photo) so if you just have a like vs love for blue cheese make sure to ask for it on the side. The service was not great, yet I did not mind as the overall experience was so fun. Caution: one must be 21 to enter, so definitely not a place to come with the kids!
