While driving along Hwy 11 between Beloit and Dubuque, IA, I stopped for lunch at Sherell Jean's Diner in the very small town of South Wayne. This very cozy diner has very hometown and local atmosphere inside with 10 permanent stools at the lunch counter and a few tables. The food prep area is behind the lunch counter which has a grill, deep fryer, and food cooler. The staff was chatting with the regulars. As for the food, it's basic American fare. For breakfast (anytime), they serve eggs, 3 egg omelets, pancakes, French toast, biscuits & gravy, and breakfast sides. The lunch offerings include sandwiches, soups, burgers, hot dogs, chicken, fried seafood, fried appetizers, sides, and desserts (soft serve ice cream treats & pies, delivered from Pilgrim Pantry on Thursdays). On Fridays, it's fish frys (fried cod or boiled cod) offered. Pepsi fountain drinks and beer & wine served here. Prices seem reasonable, most items under $10. I took a seat at the lunch counter and ordered the Philly Steak ($6.25) with chips & dill pickle spear. I watched my food being made on the grill. The Philly Steak was not fancy and consisted of grilled "steak-um" with grilled onions, green peppers, and lots of melted cheese on a soft hoagie roll. The potato chips were the standard out "stick hand" in big bag (Block & Barrel). The food tasted pretty good and it was similar to what I used to eat at college, grilled "steak-ums" everyday! The food was served promptly after ordering. This what I needed for lunch before continuing on my road trip through Southern Wisconsin.
