The fried chicken was really good. Also had the Mac and cheese on the side as well as coleslaw. Okay, fine I had the pecan cake too. I couldn't help it, it looked sooo good and it tasted even better. The fried chicken meal comes with 3 pieces, breast, leg, and thigh. The chicken is made to order to either call ahead or be prepared to wait some time. It's totally worth it though.

The food here is fantastic and quite authentic. I'm from Louisiana, and I was not disappointed. I got the three piece fried chicken lunch with mac and cheese and mashed potatoes with gravy as my sides. My friend got the collard greens, which were also delightful. Definitely large portions so plan accordingly. They do takeout so call ahead, and they'll cook everything fresh. You can also fine in. The dining area is small but very clean and modern. My only complaints were the sweet tea and the cell phone reception. The sweet tea was disgusting and did not take like southern sweet tea, plus you don't get free refills. Also, I had no cell phone service (AT&T carrier) when inside so that bugged me.

I had never heard of Nino's until I read the review in Milwaukee Journal...so of course any opportunity that I have to eat some Soul Food and not have to cook...I am on it! When I arrived I wasn't expecting a place to sit because the restaurant specializes in takeout...fortunately they do have a couple of tables and counter seating..,unfortunately I chose to visit on the day after the review came out so the place was jam packed but I was in a holding pattern and was able to snag a table soon after I placed my order. I don't eat pork and they have a lot of vegetable items cooked with pork (hammocks) maybe as they expand they will either substitute using smoked turkey or just serve vegetables without pork(maybe even cook the pork separately and add to those order that want it..,) ,however they do have a few sides without pork..,cornbread dressing, fried corn, Mac n Cheese and candid yams..,but I would have loved to try some collard greens, black eye peas, speckled butter beans or pinto beans with a piece of cornbread... Well I ordered the fried chicken dinner(other options were smothered chicken, catfish and fried/smothered pork chops, bbq'd pig feet and chitterlings(dinner comes with two sides of your choice) My fried chicken dinner ($11.99)came with three pieces of meat(a breast, leg and wing) for my sides I ordered cornbread dressing and Mac and cheese. I also purchased an extra side ($2.99) of candid yams... My order took about thirty minutes but I don't waiting for cooked to order chicken which was well seasoned, hot and crispy. The Mac and cheese was as good as mine which means it was delicious!!! The candid yams were just okay and the cornbread dressing was flavorful and had a nice consistency...it didn't taste like stove top stuffing pretending it was dressing, it wasn't too loose or too gummy...just good! I was by myself so I killed time while waiting for order watching streaming video on my phone although the restaurant does have a huge flatscreen tv but eating soul food and drinking grape soda (Sprechers) made me think a little of my childhood in Texas without spending hours cooking and cleaning after... I had enough food leftover for either a round two tonight or maybe lunch tomorrow. Even though I was full a grabbed one of the last remaining pieces of peach cobbler but they do have a nice variety of desserts(chocolate and vanilla cake and sweet potato pie) Despite being very busy all the customers waited patiently and the staff have great service. I will be back!!

I tried Nino's Southern Sides this afternoon and I have to say that it is AMAZ-ING. I was very impressed with the quality of the food and the turn around for the food. I tried the smothered Pork Chops dinner with Mac and Cheese and Collard Green sides. ' The food was more than enough and I left with some to take home as well. The only I was not a fan of was the Corn bread, other than that it tasted very similar to food my parents would make. The staff was nice and the place was very clean, I would recommend it for a few people, but not for an entire group. If you are looking for a great southern place to try, I would recommend here!

How nice to have a piece of the south in Wisconsin! Never in my life, have I met a nicer staff. Seriously. I got meatloaf, cabbage, and Mac n cheese. The husband got chitlins, collard greens, and mac n cheese. Everything came out super fresh and scalding hot. I suggest you try this place. Now!!!

It's a Shame the Eastside still lacks a great soul food establishment When have you waited 50 minutes for your supper? When have you waited 50 minutes for carry out? Only at Nino's. Get this store has a southern vibe but damn, does it have to move like molasses? Staff most kind but cashier takes food calls, rings up, stocks cakes, and tries to move the tickets. What is going on in the kitchen? Can view kitchen staff just wandering around. Noticed lots of food sides being pre-dished out (in see thru plastic containers) concerning as to proper food temperatures being maintained. Food delays are attributed to cooking each order as we order. What ever happened to cooking up say 5 lbs. of chicken and when you've gotten down to small amount, putting on more? Prices are North Shore high but food taste was so-so. As customers are not family members who will cut you slack, I won't eat at Nino's again unless things radically improve.

Go here. Go here right now. You will feel happy about the decision. Split a three piece meal and four sides (meal came with two, extra sides are $2.99 for a very generous portion) with a friend. It was fantastic. The fried chicken was really good - crispy, juicy, very flavorful, not at all greasy. The meal usually comes with a breast, a wing and a drumstick, but they were very accommodating when I asked for a breast and two thighs. I was really pleased with the breast meat - super juicy and flavorful. The sides were AWESOME. We got stewed okra, black eyed peas, yams and coleslaw. The okra was totally slammin' - perfectly cooked whole okra pods, delightfully seasoned with just a bit of heat. The peas were perfect. The coleslaw was waaaaayyyy better than your standard fried chicken joint coleslaw - nice pieces of cabbage, including red cabbage, and the veggie to sauce ratio was spot on, not at all drenched. The yams were very, very sweet, which I normally don't like. These were chunks of yam, though, which gave it a good texture and sweetness distribution, so it turned into a nice dessert. Not what I was expecting, and not sure I'd order the yams again, but they were a lot better than any other sweetened yam dish I've eaten. In sum - this place is awesome. Service was very friendly, prompt and attentive, and the place just felt nice inside. These folks got it goin' on. Plus they're local small business owners, so you can feel doubly good about eating their delicious food. I waited about 6 minutes for my order, and enjoyed talking with Angie and Calandra while I waited.

Not sure if it is good southern food or a bunch of food out of a box or can. Ordered the fried chicken lunch/dinner and it was a thigh, drumstick, and a whole wing with 2 sides plus a corn bread. The whole thing was 11.99+tax and a little pricier than I expected. The pork chop lunch/dinner was 2 pork chops, 2 sides, and a slice of white bread. Also 11.99+tax and a bit on the pricier side. Fried chicken was tasty but small and there should be more pieces. Pork chop was tender but overly salty. Fried corn turned out to be canned corn. Yams were decent but could have been from a can with cinnamon, sugar and butter added to it. Collard greens were too soft and could have used some spice. Bit into a piece of smoked pork hock bone too. Mashed potatoes were completely smooth and was close to box mashed potatoes. The gravy tasted like beef gravy straight from the can. Corn bread was more savory than sweet and very dry. Had to eat it with the canned corn to be palatable. Overall it took 20 minutes to get my food after ordering with no other orders there. It's also a bit pricey for what you get and I heard the microwave more times than I should have.

I'm from Oklahoma and my wife is from here in Milwaukee. It's been quite some time since I've had any sort of real down home cooking and with our visit to Nino's today, I think I can safely say that I no longer have to worry about going too long without food from home again. We ordered the meatloaf, red beans & rice, mashed potatoes, and stewed okra and let me tell you how absolutely spot on the chef was with our order. It was a surprising taste of home for me and I love it. The wait staff is absolutely wonderful and made my family feel at home and welcome. My son even gave one of the nice women there a hug when we left. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area or nearby looking for a taste of southern living. I honestly can't wait to go back.

Great Fried Chicken and Macaroni & Cheese. New place, so it was very clean. Friendly service. All the Sprecher sodas on tap. Took my food to go and was still hot from Shorewood to Tosa. 3 piece box included breast, leg and medium size piece including the wing...will have to study my chicken anatomy for the name of that piece. Crispy skin, juicy meat with good flavor. Loved the mac and cheese, especially with the hot sauce they included. Coleslaw was good, too. Freshly made. Food took a little bit of waiting, but it was worth it. Would suggest calling ahead at busy times. Looking forward to trying the Smothered Chicken on the next visit and some of the other sides. First time around gets a...Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner!

We stopped by for take out this afternoon. The whole way home, we were (half) wishing that the food would not be good as having yummy fried chicken and pork chops 10 minutes from home would be dangerous. Given the 5 stars above, you can see it was fantastic. There are many sides to choose from. We especially liked the greens, cabbage and slaw (creamy style, which is not my usual favorite, but it's good with the other sides). The okra was another great choice (but, like with all okras, you have to like that slimy texture). The only miss was the mashed potatoes that were a bit too salty for me. The cornbread is southern style, which means not sweet. So it cuts the richness of the meal well. Finally, the fried chicken and pork chop were excellent. Both very moist, not greasy at all. And they held up very well in the car ride home. They do have a few tables inside, and we are looking forward to trying some of their cakes and pies next time. Great service that we very friendly. We will be back!

The food is good, but this place takes a very long time. The staff move really slowly and are a bit ornery as well (I observed them snap at a customer). Don't come here for lunch if you only have a half hour.

I live right next door to this place. They just opened a couple of days ago, I paid a visit on the 2nd day of the opening of this restaurant. I ordered Smothered Chicken with 2 sides. It was awesome. Again, it was awesome. From the sides, best MAC & CHEESE I have ever had, coleslaw was also very good. I am for sure going back to this place again, waiting for Friday when they will be serving Seafood Gumbo.

Nino's Southern Sides is in the former location of Shorewood's Al Calderone Club. The restaurant centers around southern-style side dishes of three sizes: family serving, double serving, or a single serving, but also has a selection of main dishes for folks who are looking for an entire meal to go. Owner Valerie Daniels-Carter is opening a second location, Nino's Southern Sides Express at 3070 MLK Dr., soon!

I forgot the name of the woman who helped me out, but she was so friendly and attentive. I got the mac and cheese & Cole Slaw. Both amazing! They are all made in the store which is great because everything is fresh and hasn't been sitting. It might have been the best cole slaw I have ever had.

A new addition to Shorewood's ever growing N. Oakland Ave. neighborhood NSS is an interesting fit for the neighborhood which could work to their advantage. Among the coffee shops, bistros and wine bars there is now a "soul food" restaurant. As of this writing they have no website or published menu on Yelp, other than a couple photos that were taken of their takeout menu flyer. I had called ahead as the place is listed as a takeout restaurant so figured there would be a minimal amount of space to stand around. As with many new restaurants unfortunately there was some confusion with my order and I ended up standing around waiting for 15 minutes or so. The place has seating for up to 15 people but I would not recommend it as there is zero atmosphere for enjoyable dining. Everything appears to be brand spanking new from the floors to the countertops and furniture, but I never visited the previous restaurant that resided here so maybe it is left over from their short stay. The grandmother who appeared to be the boss was kind enough to offer me a free dessert for my unexpected extended wait. I chose the coconut pineapple cake which my daughter and I speculated was a box mix upon sampling it at home. On to the main courses! We ordered three pieces of fried chicken with a side of yams and coleslaw. Everything here was quite good. The chicken had a very light flavorful breading and would be considered very good by anyone who is a fan of straight up fried chicken. The yams were very good with a lot of flavor and spice. The coleslaw which was a rather small portion was sweet but quite good. I ordered the meatloaf with Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. The meatloaf was not completely heated through and quite crumbly. That being said it actually had potential of being quite good with a lot of nice flavors. The Mac and cheese was a real disappointment as it was somewhat dry and lacked any real cheesy flavor. The mashed potatoes were very smooth and my daughter speculated as to whether they were real or powdered. Both entrées were served with a single piece of white bread. I think this place has the potential to be really good. They just seem to be figuring out their workflow right now. I think this could offer a welcome diversion to the current food scene in the north shore. I will give them a few weeks to smooth out their operations and give them another try. If you are in the mood for some quick no-frills stick to your ribs Southern cooking give them a try.

I'd really like ot give them 2.5 stars becuase this place is really somewhere between the 2 star rating of "Meh. I've experienced better" and the 3 star rating of "A-OK." I've gotten take out a couple of times from here now and Nino's needs a new name. Yes, they do serve southern sides, but not all of them all of the time and not all of them are good. The fried chicken is good; I can't say it was crispy like other reviewers, but the drive back down to the 3rd Ward may have something to do with that. The pork chops, I think they dredge the smothered porkchop in the same flour/seasoning they use for the chicken, which isn't a bad thing. The pork chops aren't really smothered, more like dabbed in gravy. The sides are what take my review down to 3 stars. C'mon if part of the name of your establishment is Southern Sides-you should excel in that area-right? I was surprised at the hit or miss of the sides. They were out of the hashbrown casserole which sound great on paper. Another visit they were out of butter beans. I think my mac and cheese was microwaved in the plastic to go container it was served in. The cheese was only on the sides of the container. My red beans were bland and had about 20 grains of rice. The greens are good with some nice chunks of ham. The mashed potatoes are either the most whipped potatoes in town or they're out of a box. The gravy on said mashed potatoes was bland and its consistency was thin. The cornbread was hard and dry. The women at the counter are incredibly friendly. Beware, their sweet tea can out you into a diabetic coma.

The food is generally pretty good. Good marks for most everything but the red beans and rice was significantly different than what I came to know and love while living in Louisiana. Not bad, just really different. The few times I have been in there it was never busy and service was prompt. Tonight was a different story. There were only a half dozen people or so in the place but the kitchen was in chaos in spite of being fully staffed and the help at the counter seemed pretty confused. Not sure what happened but I left after being ignored for far too long. Not sour grapes, just an observation. Rest assured the food will bring me back but I think I'll avoid the dinner "rush" in the future. Four stars for food, three stars for service.

Patience is a virtue. 50 minutes to get food on Sunday at 2 pm. Food is great, but they need to speed things up if they want people to be repeat customers. Call at least an hour ahead. Very nice staff!!!

The meatloaf that I ordered was sour and spoiled. I threw it in the garbage it was so bad. The mac n cheese, cabbage and fried corn were not up to par either. I was very disappointed and when I told them about the meatloaf, they took it from me after I pulled it from garbage to show them and they said nothing. They acted like they really didn't care. They offered me no apology or refund..very unprofessional. I will never return.

Decided to stop by on our way home tonight. Lucky for us, it was Saturday night which means the specialty cuisines are served today! We went with the fried catfish dinner and the fried chicken dinner. I wanted to try one piece smothered style and they were more than happy to do that! For our sides we picked collared greens, coleslaw, hash brown casserole, and red beans and rice. The hash brown casserole was one of the specialty items, so I was excited to try that. We were told about 25 minutes for our order but it was less than that, about 20, so not too bad! The chicken was flavorful and moist, the catfish was great (according to my hubby), all of the sides were nice too. I have to say the coleslaw may be the best I've had! My hash brown casserole was flavorful but it was cold, easily reheated in the microwave so nothing I'd really complain about since everything else was at the proper temp. Friendly service, very clean restaurant. Definitely a nice addition to shorewood! We will be returning!

Fried chicken is good, a decent amount of sides. If you are looking for something healthy don't go here but for the most part the food is good. I personally would skip the deserts they did not taste fresh wen we visited. Small inside but you can definitely eat there. It's a great alternative to some of the chain fried chicken places for about the same cost.

Finally a Southern Restaurant in the Milwaukee Area that we can be proud of. Great food wonderfully presented and a very clean prestine restaurant. Others should take note that this is how it should be done.

I enjoyed my meal, the collard greens were great. The chicken was tasty. The macaroni and cheese was so so. Over all I would recommend this restaurant.
