Went here on a Tuesday night, and we had the entire dining room to ourselves. The food was decent for the price. Service was friendly but a little slow considering the place was empty.

So I just moved to the sleepy town of Poynette, and all the old duffers at the local golf course said I needed to try this place. I'm left with just a "ho-hum" feeling of satisfaction. We visited this fine establishment on a Sunday morning at 9 am. As we walked in, we were greeted by a clean bar area. It hadn't been updated since Nixon was in office, but it was clean. As you walk through the bar, you'll find the eating area. This area is large, and not overly inviting. It reminds me of a church sanctuary full of tables, not pews and the senior crowd, the parishioners. As one looks around, you can't help but wonder if Metamucil is on draught here. We sat down, and waited, and then waited some more. Finally the menus showed up. it was breakfast and the choices are vast and cheap. The omlettes are named after various owls in the wild. Snow, Horned, and other random owls are what you order. Too bad the Service Owl hadn't flown to work today as there was only one poor girl to work the room full of staving folks. The food, when it finally showed up, was really good. I had the Horned Owl, which was an omlette of ham, cheese, veggies and other stuff I can't recall. I also had American fries and toast. I can't recall what my date had, but she couldn't finish her meal the portions were so large. I guess when it comes down to it, you go to a restaurant to eat. And eat we did. The food was great. Our bill for two meals and one drink was under $14.00. McDonalds would have been about the same price and then I would have needed the plunger Owl later in the AM. What sucked is the two hours it took to have a meal from enter to exit. Too long to wait, even if the food is great.

I came here without knowing where I was heading. On an empty stomach. It took about 30 minutes to drive from Madison, and another 30 minutes to wait for a table (when we reached at 8pm). Sounds really long, but hey, the wait was well worth it. I wanted fish fry. Did I get what I want? Yes, and two more fillets for leftovers. Service: 3/5 Owl's nest seem like a diner, run by a family. Nice cosy feeling, but definitely a very low key place you probably won't come with a date. Friendly for kids, family and elderly. Orders were served by just one kind lady, so it takes awhile before she comes around. But after getting seated, you order and get food pretty quickly. Do remember, you pay up at the front! Don't sit around and wait. Food: 5/5 My friends, man and I tried all 3 kinds of fish fry. I love fried things, so I went for beer battered. My friends got breaded and broiled. Surprisingly, my favorite was the broiled! Spices were so gooooood. OMG. btw, the fish is cod. very very good. Oh, and I didn't mention, the sides and fish are served family style, if you and someone else ordered the same thing. French fries are alright, not very crispy, nor very spongy. Beer battered was good too, but there isn't much of a crust, so it isn't very crispy. But at least for all kinds of the fish you see how fresh the fish is cos it's not overwhelmed with batter. We also had cheese curds. Decent, and good to satisfy my hunger pangs. Ambience: 3/5 Diner, family style. Spacious. The mirrors make it look bigger than it is. Not romantic. Kinda hipster? Alot of the crowd is above 50, so everyone is nice and kind. Miscellaneous: 4/5 Very very cheap. A grilled cheese is only $2.45??? And an additional baked potato is only $0.50. Worth the buck! I like the fish, but I'm not sure if I wanna drive 30 minutes just to get fish fry and still have to wait for seats. Oh right, you can make reservations.

I'll preface this that I came here for a family function on a Sunday afternoon. We had a limited menu, which was completely understandable since we had a group of about 40. I got the "chicken melt." It was a chicken finger, equivalent to what I could buy in the frozen food department, on a bun with American cheese on it. And then they charge $9 for it. I hadn't eaten in hours so I ate the sandwich and left the fries, which had no salt or flavor. I've heard about the fish fry, and I want to try it, but not sure I'd waste the drive up from Madison.

Re-visited the Owl's Nest on 7/6/12 for the fish fry, and was underwhelmed. For the full review please check my profile and visit my blog. You can read the complete details there, as I don't like having to draft two separate reviews for Yelp and my blog.

Food was ok, for the price it wasn't worth it. Staff was friendly but not very fast. Waitstaff did not seem interested in our needs. Wouldn't go back.

I recently visited the area for some time "at home" with my parents. The one super Wisconsin thing I wanted to do was to take my Scottish beau to a Friday night fish fry. And the only place I wanted to go was to the Owl's Nest. I've been coming here since I was a kid. And though there was probably a near 10 year absence between high school and my later 20s, it has never disappointed. AMAZING fish (and I don't even like fish in general) served family style. The BEST. (I always go for the beer-battered). The onion rings are famous for a reason, as well. They are bringers of heartburn, but also bringers of joy. I've long since learned to only get a half order. And before you leave, be sure to get a grasshopper for dessert! They're big enough to share between 2 (or 3 or 4) people. And they're old-fashionedly fabulous. The Owl's Nest hasn't changed much in my life. The decor is tacky and the menu simple. But the food is amazing, the service is always great, and the people are just plain nice. GO! :)

Last night my family - 3 little girls, my husband and I, went to the Owl's nest for a delicious fish fry! I had the beer batter cod - yum and my husband had the breaded - I liked the seasoning on his fish even better. We'll definitely be heading back. My two older girls were very happy with their mini corn dog kid meals. My oldest is a BIG eater and she definitely had enough to eat - as did we all. My hubby wasn't super impressed with a waitress but I think for a busy Friday night she did just fine. Great experience!

I went for the fish fry. It was great. For $10.95 served family-style, you get fish (battered, breaded or broiled - we had battered), coleslaw (you can also get the modest salad bar), good old fashion baked beans and no-frills but very good french fries. It was the two of us but the portions could easily serve three. A very Wisconsin style place and yes have an old fashion to drink. I wouldn't call it a supper club (no relish tray) but supper club like. A definite keeper.

If you go on Friday night, you will wait.....but it will be worth it. AMAZING fish fry. Served family-style - coleslaw, baked beans, bread basket, French fries. This is classic Wisconsin.
