Ted's has ruled North Avenue for decades. You won't find a better malt anywhere. Solid bacon and eggs breakfast place at a great price. They keep it real.

Hands down the best classic diner around with great service and prices. An excellent place for all walks of life to enjoy a quality American breakfast.

Great breakfast! I love the chocolate malts!

This place is a local gem. Simple menu done well, speedy and friendly service, lots of neighborhood diner charm. I have a thing for hash browns and for some reason they're hard to find around these parts. Ted's does 'em right - & that simple fact alone would be enough to keep me coming back. The breakfast special will run you a cool $5.75 - a great helping of 2 eggs, bacon/sausage, hashbrowns, and toast. I also love the eggs bennie - that'll only cost you $5.95 with hashbrowns. I love having Ted's in my neighborhood and it's always a great way to start my morning.

Cheap lunch With all the new offerings on North Ave, Ted's is worthy of more frequent visits but the hours aren't the most convenient - they tend to be closed when I'm driving thru. :( That said, their greasy spoon burgers, shakes and fries are top notch and are well under my $10 lunch cap.

Best malts burgers and breakfast, quirky hours but always a go to on weekends will always be on top of list

How have I not reviewed Ted's? To be fair, the Mister and I get here rarely because NAG is our go-to breakfast place and because Ted's is only open limited hours. If you can get here for breakfast or lunch, you're in for a solid meal at a very reasonable price. First, the majority of the seating is at the counter (maybe 30 seats?). Second, it's a fairly small place so if you hit them up at a peak time with a large party (more than 4) you may end up sitting separately. The interior is "vintage diner", is well kept and reminds me quite a bit of Solly's on the east side. They use butter here too but not to the extreme... The menu is simple - breakfast classics, sandwiches and burgers. You won't get short rib hash or Korean pork belly scrambles here but you will get well executed eggs, French toast and hash browns. I'm always amazed at how much food they can produce in a short time because the kitchen is teeny-tiny. Service for us has always been fast and friendly. If you live in the area, chances are you'll run into one (or more) of your neighbors here on any given weekend morning. Good eats, cheap prices, what's not to like?

A neighborhood staple since 1941! A recent visit reminded me where George Webb's went wrong. Stick with what made you successful!. I could see GW being a lot like Ted's back in the day: Great diner decor, greasy flat-top pounding out breakfast and burger favorites. Old-fashioned soda fountains and shakes served in stainless steel cups. Ah, the 40's. Diner food has come a long way since then. Take North Avenue Grill for instance. They remain humble and true to what a diner should be while at the same time the quality of the food there has risen to meet today's heightened expectations. Other local breakfast places, namely Blue's Egg and Story Hill BKC, are amongst the most popular establishment's in town. Ted's is exactly what it has always been, a counter-service greasy spoon with a menu limited to just the favorites and just things that they do well: Eggs, fried breakfast meats, fried potatoes, and coffee. Any changes since the day they opened have been organic, not deliberate. I love the collection of miscellaneous coffee mugs and silverware. You might get a mug that says "World's greatest Grandma" or mug shaped like a pirate's head. I love that. Last week my fork looks like it came from some long-lost great-aunt's fine silver set. Classy. I'll admit, although we only come here when our favorite breakfast place is too crowded, I've never regretted it. It's so cheap! Breakfast for two is always well under $20 including tip!

Unique place. This is an old school grill restaurant. Very much a diner. Almost all seating is at the counter on a stool. Food was good, but it is standard greasy spoon fare. Looking for breakfast, a burger, etc. It is very good. Service is fast. Would return.

I've been to Ted's twice. Had the Eggs Benedict both times. Solid but not the best I've had. Ted's is a popular small diner with a loyal customer base. Open for breakfast and lunch only, the menu is small and features a few breakfast items, burgers, sandwiches and ice cream. I think the prices are very fair, so the value seems to be there.

Loved the atmosphere, think 1950s diner. Small menu, but had all the staple items. Great prices, good food. Will go back.

Great fish fry at Ted's. Good service. Had the fish fry last night at this cool diner. The food was hot and the fish was delicious. Atmosphere is friendly and fun. Ted's is a great spot and I will be back for a breakfast or lunch soon. Also liked the free parking and soda fountain. The chocolate malt was the best.

Unfortunately I have to give this place 1 star. The first time I was here the food was good. My second visit was horrible. I sat with face forward towards the grill and cook and noticed that she didn't wear gloves and was touching EVERYTHING and still handled food. As I watched I saw her touch the fridge her cell phone and her dirty shirt without washing her hands once. When the waitress came to take our order we asked that she use some gloves and were told she did have any but then she washed her hands. I work in health care and this is not a good look for food handling. I will not be returning I'll pass on the h pylori. Thanks

Solid okay. Clearly local favorite restaurant - long chats between customers and staff. Staff know what customers usually order. Service is still friendly, pretty attentive and efficient even for total strangers. You know all those fake, yuppie old-time diners supposedly reminiscent of a time gone by? This ain't that. It's the real thing. The prices are good to great. My omelet, coffee and toast were basic, no frills. The multi grain toast was good, unexpectedly good. The coffee was good. The omelet was okay. Maybe I shoulda ordered something more different - like waffles with fruit and whipped cream. Maybe next time, if there is a next time. Oh, and the seating is limited to mostly diner stools, the real diner kind. Uncomfortable and cheek to cheek with other customers.

(Five stars - based on diner style restaurants). Ted's is an "ole fashioned" diner with counter seating, only. Kevin, the owner, is there and cooks on most days. His staff of servers are friendly and efficient. This place is as busy as it is because they serve great food at great prices. There's a chalk board special every day for breakfast... $4.95 for eggs, hash browns and a choice of meat, 'til 11:30 AM. The board also says, "after 11:30, $24.95." LOL! Lunch also has chalk board specials that change from day to day. Fish fry is the Friday special - with traditional fish fry sides of marbled rye bread, cole slaw and potato pancakes. Soups are made in-house and are terrific. My favorite: Italian vegetable.; fresh veggies, a bit of ground meat and mozzarella cheese on top. Outstanding. Ted's is famous for their ice cream, malts, sundaes, etc. During Christmas, they make their own chocolate truffles that are the best I ever had.

My only experience at Ted's is the strawberry sundae. It was HUGE! and pretty tasty. Everything about it was great, but the ice cream didn't taste homemade to me. That doesn't mean it wasn't good or that I'm calling them out for saying their ice cream is homemade (I'm sure it is), it just doesn't have that super creamy rich flavor most homemade ice creams have. The service was wonderful and the place is pretty cute. I'm sure we'll be back. Oh, and it's cheap - 1 giant sundae split between 2 people that was barely finished - $4.

This place is way old and probably has not changed much since the 40's, which is very cool. The U shaped seating and the spinning diner chairs are quaint. All the elbow marks on the formica atest to the many years of hungry diners. The menu is a bit uninspired and I was unimpressed by the bag o potato chips that came with my tuna melt, which was fine. They use above average bread which I liked. The star of the menu and the real reason to go is for their delicious malt shakes. I really wanted to hear some great 50's music here, but alas there was no music just a bunch of old men regulars sitting around, one uncomfortably staring at us. Our waitress was nice and attentive and made sure everything was to our liking. Note: they do not serve breakfast all day here.

This place is exactly what you would expect from a diner that has been here forever. If you are expecting fancy fare, hip or super nice atmosphere, this is not the place for you. Went here on a Sunday morning, it was busy, but we found seats right away. If you do sit at the bar/countertop, expect to be elbow to elbow with others who are eating, a good place to people watch for sure. Stepping into this place is kinda like going back in time. It immediately creates a sense of nostalgia. Prices are very reasonable. The food, classic diner food - exactly what we expected. Coffee was decent, never saw the bottom of the cup. Had a root beer float which was by far the best thing I had, amazing, made me feel like a kid again.

OLD SCHOOL TO THE T! This place is amazing! I had never been there before (or even heard of it for that matter), when I moved to Wauwatosa with my main-man about 5 years ago. Then one morning he suggested we go to this Milwaukee staple, and boy am I glad he did. Pull up a seat at the counter (if you can find one, because this place is so good that it's busy as all get-out!) The food is delicious, priced well, and comes out fast. And do yourself a favor, get a shake or a malt. Just do it. They make a mean malt people! Love the atmosphere at Ted's, love the people, and love the food! High 5!

I have been living close to Ted's for three years now and I finally stopped in for breakfast. I don't know why it took me this long. They know how to do the staples of breakfast right. Service was good too. Friendly but not instrusive like sometimes you get at places. I can't wait to go back soon and get a sundae or shake.

Cheap good hearty breakfast. If you are a regular, the staff knows what you like and helps you out.

This is your small town diner with the best diner food around! Breakfast and lunch are excellent, I have not been here for dinner but have only heard and smelt great things!

I've been road-tripping up to Milwaukee area for YEARS to spend time with my favorite cousin. Why we haven't dined here until today is beyond me! Living in Chicago, I LOVE the diner experience. Walking into Ted's is like going through a time warp. It's a cozy little establishment circa 1950's complete with a winding counter and a few small tables on the perimeter of the restaurant. Our server was friendly and attentive ensuring that I was not deprived of my morning caffeine. I had the breakfast special which was 2 eggs, 2 pieces of bacon, hash browns, and toast. An easy order - but done just the way I like it. My eggs were perfect, bacon - crisp and tasty, hashbrowns - crisp and buttery, and toast was slathered in butter. Heart attack on a plate. A girl has to indulge sometime, right? While the grown-ups in our group did the usual egg and meat breakfast, my 8 year-old nephew ordered pancakes. Since it wasn't on the menu, he asked if they could add chocolate chips. Of course they could! They did one better by piling chocolate chips AND whipped cream all over the pancakes. Somehow I resisted the temptation to overpower the kid and hijack his breakfast. :) Overall, this diner is worth visiting again. Maybe next time I'll go for an old-fashioned malt (with my Lactaid, of course). Ha!

Ted's is a fun little diner on North Avenue with a dedicated core of "regulars". I've only been there about 3 times, but this is my default breakfast spot when meeting up with friends (when I'm not in the mood for Cranky Al's donuts). The waitresses that I've had have been extremely sweet and very accommodating for those bringing babies. Expect the typical cheap and tasty diner fare, bottomless coffee, daily specials and the classic diner experience. Also in the summer, as the name suggests, Ted's is an ice cream shop, which I have yet to try. Make sure you have at least some cash on you, because though you can use a credit card to pay for the bulk of your food, you can't pay for a tip that way.

I have a very bizarre case of review paranoia here. So many 4's and 5's and here I am, the jerk with a 3. Maybe I am not factoring value in enough? Maybe I missed something the few times I've been? I'm not sure what it is, but I just can't go any higher. Please don't take that 3 to be a bad thing. When I rate a restaurant, I have to compare it to every other restaurant I have ate at. I don't really think about price or how cool the counters are, I'm just thinking "Is this food worth the star rating". So if I look at my 5 stars (The 5 O'Clock Steakhouse for example) and then think of Ted's, well... Ted's ain't a 5 star restaurant. The place has exactly what you would expect from a diner. Cheap breakfasts in the morning and after 11:30, cheap burgers. For breakfast you have the classics like pancakes, eggs, bacon and my personal favorite, Eggs Benedict. EB is my go to meal in every single diner I go to, and Ted's certainly has a good one. Breakfast is heard to mess up and at Ted's, they don't mess it up. Lunches are good, better then what you'd get at George Webb's and they have some awesome shakes and malts to top it off! It's hard to go on too long about Ted's, because it is what it is. A classic diner with friendly service, customers who are clearly regulars and good, cheap food. If you like diners, Ted's is the perfect spot for you.

I've been coming here since I was five (18 years ago) and I love it just the same everytime! The amazingly affordable breakfast special has been the same since I was little and it's either that or their great burgers and fries. Above ALL, no matter what time of day it is, GET THE MALTS!!! Voted #1 in Milwaukee, actually :) I've moved to CA now, but I try to come here every time I visit my parents. Yum.

Was there for the first time, smiled at the two waitresses to be seated or be offered a menu, but even after making eye contact, they completely ignored me. I stood there for a good 5 minutes waiting and observed they were ignoring me and not at all too busy to at least greet me. This disappointed me especially after reading such good reviews. Finally, I asked a guy for a menu and ordered to go. Tried the burger w soup. Tasted better than sobelman's on Marquette campus. I hope the ladies cheer up or at least draw happy arched brows to appear happy. Customer service was 1 star today. The food was 4 stars.

Great bang for your buck! went here for breakfast as i was leaving for the airport, and wish i would have found this place sooner, as i would have come here for breakfast everyday. It is by far nothing fancy, but just good classic breakfast food for a very very good price. the corned beef hash is that "institutional" canned corned beef, but as far as i am concerned, its a lot better than when most restaurants attempt to make their own. And if you believe the saying that Butter makes everything better, than you will love this place. Toast coated with so much butter, you can wring it out! One thing that you cannot miss while going here is their milk shakes. the best in town!!! even after breakfast, you need to have one. i did!

We stumbled upon Ted's on the way to Cranky Al's down the street so we came back the next day for breakfast. The special of 2 eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast was great. Ted's is a great old school diner with a nice curved counter and the biggest table for two I've ever seen by the window. The staff was friendly and service was quick. I wish we'd have had time to come back for a malt, but alas, our time in Milwaukee was up. Maybe next time.

The place looks like a scene out of an old movie: the town that someone forgot. Other than that it was good food. The French toast could use a little more sprucing up. The waitress was kind! Melissa was great. The eggs were okay, nice and fluffy. They just needed to lay off the butter on my toast. I should never have to scrape off enough butter to be able to butter another persons toast.

  • Amber S.

Solid old school diner. Leah is usually our server and get's the job done with a certain charm. The food has always been good and the price is great. It's a little crowded if you have, let's say, three very young children, but otherwise I have no complaints. I think you can't tip on your credit card so just bring some cash.

My boyfriend and I came here because I wanted breakfast and he wanted lunch and it had the highest reviews on yelp in the area. When you walk in, don't let the decor fool you, this place is great! We ended up getting there too late for breakfast (they only serve unitl 11:30 am), so I took a look at the rest of the menu. I could not believe how cheap everything was. We both ended up getting a 1/3 pound burger with fries and soup or salad for $4.99 each. The soup was homemade and was very good. The burger is one of the best that I have ever had! The service was awesome. They have limited hours during the week, I think Monday through Thursday they are open until 2 or 3 pm. Their hours are extended on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (They also have freshly made pies on those days.). They have a fish fry on Fridays, which we will definitely try out. Give this place a try, you will not regret it! Being a former waitress...please remember to tip on service, not just on the bill alone. I don't know how these poor waitresses can make it if everyone tips them 15%.

Walking into Ted's, I felt like I had warped into a diner frequented by the likes of Wally, Eddie, Lumpy, and of course, The Beaver. It's a small place, with the majority of the seating being a diner counter that serpentines throughout the restaurant. There were maybe three tables that would seat two each, and maybe 2-3 booths that might seat four. The waitstaff was attentive and friendly. They must get a lot of repeat customers, though, because they were eager to take my order without having even given me a menu! From what I hear, they have great shakes and malts... even served up old style where they give you the additional that's in the tin blending cup. I however went with a strawberry ice cream soda which was proportioned just right. Their pizza burger was also really good. I expected that it would have cheese and sauce on top, but it was a seasoned patty with cheese in the center without any sauce. It was served, like all their other burgers, on a toasted hard roll. It adds a great dimension to the sandwich. If any of you are fans of the now closed "Charcoal Pit" in Milwaukee, you'll like the burgers here! Fries were thin, crispy, and not greasy. Kudos! Overall, a delicious meal at a decent price. I'll be back!

Great diner with a neighborhood crowd. Went there for breakfast with 2 friends from Napa and we all loved it. Service was solid and incredibly friendly, plus good food at great prices. I don't spend much time in Milwaukee anymore but when I get back I'll be heading to Ted's.

A great little corner spot. Wonderful burgers and malts. Love sitting at the counter. Friendly staff. Wish hours were longer but understand why they aren't. A place to go for a friendly lunch. Non smoking
