This place has new owners and my review stars will stand but my previous review doesn't apply to the current restaurant. I want to make it clear that the date of my original review is where my opinion stops. I can't say this with out leaving stars which is bad because I have not been to the new place so I can't alter the stars I previously left one way or another. They cater my job so I was given this info and I thought I wanted to share it with the yelpers in case there experience was not as good. I don't have a yelp forum to state this to the public with out posting this on a review as far as I know. I just realized that my integrity as a yelp reviewer is compromised when a business changes ownership and I don't know this. My previously posted reviews may not reflect reel time experiences of a business for another person.

After I read an article I read regarding Milwaukee's best barbecue, I thought I would try Paulee's. I drive by the place that is tucked in a tiny plaza off of 92nd, every day on my way to work. As much as I love barbecue, and have tried pretty much all of it in Milwaukee, I was excited to say the least to try this place's bbq. They opened at 11am, and I got there about 11:05, just as they were walking in and unlocking the place. I thought to myself, maybe I should come back in a little bit, but then I thought I would see if they had game. I thought the service off the bat was a bit strange. They seemed to be hustling around, and I was just left in the background. That's when I thought I would take charge and just order right away. I asked if they had brisket, and the guy didn't even know, then said 'I think we do'. I thought to myself, great, the guy doesn't even know what they had in stock. Not a good first impression. Regardless, they had brisket. I ordered the sandwich, and he said it came with 2 sides. I asked him what are the go to sides. He stated he likes french fries. I asked if they were frozen or hand cut. I think that confused him a bit, but he said they get them from a restaurant supply store. So I was skepticlal, but got the fires, and then tried their cowboy beans. I asked if they had anything to drink, and they said they did not. Who doesn't have something to drink at a restaurant?! He told me 15 minutes. They had about 4 bbq sauces on the counter, along with plastic forks and spoons, and little dishes to squirt the sauce in. The sauce bottles were kind of sticky on the exterior, which I thought was pretty gross, but I sampled all of them. They had a Kansas City style, Carolina Mustard style, a Texas red, and I think a standard sweet one. Regardless, I think it was their Kansas style one that packed some great heat. As I waited for the food, I just kept dipping my fork in the sauces, and because the one that packed the heat was really good, I thought I was in for some good barbecue. I wasn't. Got the food, and looked at it and thought this is chopped brisket! No big deal. They also said the sandwiches come on a Sciortino's roll. I don't know, maybe it was, but to me it looked like a generic hamburger bun, plus the bottom of the bun was cold. My first bite in, I was disappointed. Very little smoke flavor, and it was just slightly warmed, if that, plus a few of the bites were just fatty chunks that kind of freaked me out. The fries were few, if that, and just regular frozen fries. Nothing to write home about. The cowboy beans, to me, reminded me of just canned baked beans with some chunks of brisket thrown in. I did not even eat the brisket pieces, as the one I made an attempt to eat was dry, and the other one was kind of hard. Isn't brisket supposed to be tender and smokey? So unfortunately I left disappointed, when I really wanted this place to be the hidden gem. Maybe I caught these guys off guard when they arrived, who knows, but the somewhat cold food and bad brisket probably will not lure me back, and that's a shame to say the least. Others give this place good reviews, and I'm unclear why. I guess I'll stick with Speed Queen, or heck even Famous Dave's for that matter.

The place has changed hands and isn't quite the same. I had a pound of the rib tips and a pound of wings. The wings were just as tasty as always and the quantity was as always. The rib tips were also good but I got between half and two thirds as much in this order as in the past. The sauces were unchanged and excellent as always. I'll try it again and tune up my review if need be. Maybe they can bring it back up to five stars.

I was born right up the street from Paulee's, but I was never there until this spring. Not too much to say. I thought the rib tips were something special. Be sure to get some of their signature sauces they keep on a table. It is not a dine- in place. Take out only. Call ahead. I did, and still waited a bit. The guy working was nice though, and I could tell he was working his face off back there. Taste wise, I like it better than Dickeys. I have never been to Famous Dave's. Prices were about what you would expect. I got some deal from Living Social and there was a bit of a rigmarole about that. Living Social was not clear about the deal, so I can't get too creased. Regardless, the employees were not aware of the deal, but they did honor it. I will come back and hopefully get it up to 4 stars. Today I feel that the 3 star (A-OK) is a fair rating for my experience. As I write this review is almost lunch time and I am getting hungry. I gotta go.

Food is ok. The ribs were dry. Sandwiches aren't very full for $8. 30 minute wait after ordering. Go elsewhere.

*************************************************UPDATE******************************************************** It's with a sad and heavy heart I need to update this. Since Sam sold it, it's gone down hill. The kids working there are either stoned, or just don't care. Last time was the last time. They seem to not know what a pound weighs. A pound of rib tips doesn't equate five or six small pieces. Also, they are not made the same. The taste is still there, for the good ones. But, some tasted like they had dried out, or were from the week prior. Oh, unless you get one that is just all bone and rub. So, in a nut shell, I'm never going back. It's sad, too. I loved that place! Such awesome food. But, alas, someone wanted to cheapen out. ***************************************************************************************************************** Great BBQ! Now, keep in mind that they smoke their meats and not broil and sauce them. Rib tips are pure meat, and the full rack of ribs is HUGE! I get about 1/3 in and I'm stuffed. Fries are awesome, also. Now, I'm not a huge sauce fan, as it can hide the meat flavors. But, the couple I've tried are pretty damn good. My only complaint, is they serve Pepsi products. Not a reason to stop my visits, though. If you're in the neighborhood, I urge you to give them a try!

Awesome barbecue! Definitely try the rib tips. Sides are great too. Had the coleslaw, cowboy beans and mac and cheese so far, all have been stellar. I would give 5 starts, but the place is a bit run down. Give the place a bit of an update and maybe add a table or two and I'll go 5 starts all the way!

Two stars only because this place USED to be great for pickup BBQ. Now it's under new management and the food is charred and dry instead of moist and delicious. Bummer.

The place looks like a shithole. Is in a shithole location, is steaming hot inside, and looks as though they haven't done anything with the storefront in 30 years. After showing up and placing our order and waiting approximately 30+ minutes for our food (2 sandwiches and 2 sides...WTF!?) we finally got our order and headed back to work. Totally worth the wait and the shitty experience. Food was absolutely delicious and going forward I'm going to call my order in ahead of time. It really was that good that the long wait and mediocre service is a small price to pay. And for 2 sandwiches and actually a total of 3 sides it was only $18.50+/-. Pretty much what you'd pay anywhere else for lunch and nowhere this good of taste/quality. If this place could get their shit together regarding organization, customer service, slap a coat of paint on the place, etc, they could take over BBQ in Milwaukee. It really was that good.

I used to have this delivered at work and it was the best. I stopped there today and it has changed owners and it was not worth stopping. They took my order and told me it would be ready in 40 minutes. I get a call 20 minutes later to say they are out of brisket. I get there to pickup and they are out of macaroni and cheese. They tell me they had a rush. I ordered it . Don't sell what I ordered. They shorted me food also. Never will I waste my money again.

This place was such a huge disappointment, it's ridiculous. I had read about it being listed as some of Milwaukee's best barbecue and was excited to give it a try with my husband. I read the menu ahead of time and knew there was limited availability for their awesome-sounding Scrapper sandwich, so I would've been alright if they didn't have that one. Unfortunately, not only were they out of ingredients for that sandwich but they had run out of brisket entirely (by 3pm??)so that essentially eliminated half their menu and pretty much only left you with either pulled pork or chicken. Ok, fine. The menu states you can add two sides for $2 so I told the guy working the counter (who was actually really nice and about the only thing this place has going for it) that I would like to add some to go along with the sandwiches. Sigh... evidently their fryer isn't working so we were told we couldn't order fries or anything else that needed to be fried. Whatever; we'll do macaroni and cheese then, "we're out of that too". Holy shit. I really wanted to leave at this point but I had put so much mental energy into figuring out what we could actually eat that I just wanted to see it through and be done. We placed our order and waited the obscene 40 minutes it took to make those 2 sandwiches (my husband was about to lose his shit by now) even though we were the only 2 people in the place and I'm pretty confident in saying the only order as well. I really, really wanted to like this place. I was a server for 15 years and am pretty patient and understanding with restaurant issues; but this place totally needs to get their act together. If it's featured as being among the best barbecue in the city and new customers end up being completely disappointed, it's just going to result in costing them more business in the end and damaging their reputation.

Wow. Had Delivery to work and it was amazing. Took about a half hour and boom it came. I highly recommend for the workings crowd out there. It was very good. The fries were excellent. Bringing Texas to Milwaukee.

If you are looking for quality, affordable BBQ in the Milwaukee area, this is THE go-to spot. I honestly can't say enough about how wonderful Paulee's is. First of all, Sam and Lucas are two of the most down-to-earth and genuine people you will meet in the restaurant business. I am a very picky eater and they are both so accommodating and go out of their way to make sure I enjoy the food. My "usual" includes the chicken sandwich, grilled corn, and deep fried Mac and cheese bites. Everything is made fresh and the flavors are just unbelievable (if you like spicy, be sure to try the peach habanero-- it is to die for!) It's clear how much heart and soul has been put into this place and I would recommend Paulee's to anyone without reservation.

Pleasant service, good sauces, but just not very good overall, followed by getting very ill a few hours after the meal. We went there for the other positive yelp reviews, but we won't be going back.

Great food, great sauces, great prices, friendly staff! Can't complain at all. I order take-out from here occasionally and have tried most of the sandwiches, sides and the ribs. All of them were freshly made and tasted awesome.

BBQ as it good as it gets. I saw a link from a friend on facebook who recently tried this so I figured I would try it out. AMAZING!! My family got ribs, rib tips, white chili, and brisket baked beans. Everything was top notch. This is carry out, not a fancy place but the price is right and the quality is unsurpassed. After a recent trip to a 3rd ward BBQ restaurant, I suggest those guys come here and taste how it should be done, or get some tips. These guys are going places, give their carry out a try, phone ahead or you will have to wait a little bit. You can't rush perfection, and this BBQ is perfection. Paulee's also has home made sauces that are to die for, that even my picky kids were asking for seconds! *Update* I checked this place out again, and I would advise people who really want some good BBQ to call ahead. - Oder for the next day. The volume just isn't there yet, so you will get re-heated. For any place to do fresh off the smoker you have to have serious volume.

Awesome food. I travel and try bbq all over the state. The peach habenero wings are amazing. Very polite staff and accommodated a meal for my liking without any problems. Wish hours were a little better but take out with this kind of quality is the best. Bbq is very challenging and this place does it right

These people served amazing food at Locust Street Days, and I was so impressed by the succulent pulled pork that I decided to visit their shop some time. We didn't realize that it's basically a carryout counter, but there's a picnic table out front, so we ate there. We ordered BBQ chicken sandwiches, cowboy beans, and fried corn. The chicken was smoky and delicious, a generous serving on a Scortino's roll, with 4 or 5 home made sauces you can glop on top. The Carolina mustard sauce is especially good. The cowboy beans are flavorful and studded with big chunks of brisket. The corn was nothing special -- the menu says it has lime in it, but apparently not enough to taste. The prices were reasonable for the high quality of the product. They also sell meat by the pound, so you could take it home and add your own side dishes. It's worth a visit. Service is friendly.
