    It's no surprise that you can find some great Mexican food around 13th and Oklahoma. The size of the portions, on the other hand, can be quite the opposite. The sandwich combinations are numerous and the menu does a good job of explaining what you'll find on each of each torta configuration, though amid the brick cheese, pineapple, and bacon, there was one torta, the Cubana, that mysteriously described itself as having "everything". How could you not? Oh, and it has to be the grande size, of course, because I ain't no freaking chica. Forunately, the sandwich wasn't a giant gloopy mess of literally everything they have back in the kitchen. Unfortunately, it did seem to include every type of meat, including milanesa, ham, chorizo, turkey, hot dogs, and probably a few others, along with the standard accouterments of lettuce, tomato, jalapenos, avocado, and mayo. It was a big sandwich, but you knew that already. Also, it was dang tasty, but you already knew that, too. The sandwiches are a novelty suitable for whatever food-related travel show you might watch, but the food doesn't suffer in service of it - the giant sandwiches are filled with a variety of components that would have tasted equally delicious in a more reasonably-sized portion, which is what the rest of the customers in the restaurant were eating during my visit. A wise decision, because even after eating half of my torta, I was in for a rough afternoon, and understood all too late that the royal sandwich mascot of JC Kings was not offering an innocent smile to put you at ease, but rather a mocking guffaw as he points at the fool who dares to conquer one of his tasty football-sized challenges. You win again, Your Majesty.

    We went with a party of 6 adults and 4 kids to this little hole on the wall restaurant for lunch. When we got there there weren't enough tables available for us. On of the male customer that was eating, was kind enough to move and give us his table to make enough room for our party. We pretty much ordered everything on the menu. My honey and I, ordered a shrimp cocktail and large Milanesa torta; were we in for a surprise. It was huge....... The food was excellent. The service was excellent. The decor, not so much, but with good food. Who cares.

    Took take out back to work and all said the Milwaukee torta, 7 out of 7 pretty much agreed with me that they are amazing. This is a must try for any foodie. This is my favorite torta in Milwaukee and I can't imagine it getting knocked down.

    What a gem this place is! I was in this part of town for work one day and decided to try out JC King's for lunch. I couldn't be happier with my choice. I moved to Milwaukee from Austin last summer, and I have been craving some really good Mexican food since. Let's just say my cravings were satisfied. If I had sat at that table long enough, you probably could have convinced me I was actually in Austin. It was soooo good. I had their signature torta, the name of which I am blanking on, and it was amazing. I got the regular size, as many reviews mentioned how big the grande size is, and I think I made the right choice. I was definitely full with the regular. Before the sandwich came out I was served chips and a small cup of mexican bean soup. This was a first for me, but I loved it. I don't make it to this part of town very often, but when I do, you know where I'll be for lunch.

    Really impressed with this place! I live in Phoenix and spend a lot of time in Mexico so I had fairly low expectations. I was blown away! Great tortas, really good bread, good spicy chipotle sauce.

    Oh man are the tortas good. I stopped into JC's for the first time after the Packer game today and was completely impressed. I didn't know a full on torta restaraunt existed until now. Both my wife and I enjoyed our sandwiches. I got mine to eat there with friends while I got hers for take out. Both were delicious. I strongly recommend the chilanga. If you are going as a couple, do yourself a favor and split the grande. You'll end up saving a few bucks and it's the size of a football. You'll both be full, unless your some kinda competitive eating wierdo. Super excellent. I'll totally be back. Can't wait.

    I like this place. We tried a bunch of different tortas among a few people, along with a taco. Disclaimer: the taco was our favorite thing! That's not a hit on the tortas, but really just shows how promising this little restaurant is. It was a carnitas taco, and the pork was succulent. There was a good bit of fatty bits that weren't chewy or off-putting, but melted in your mouth and tasted amazing. There was a nice crisp on the shredded pork and it was rich and super meaty. A really tremendous little taco, especially for $1.60. Now, the tortas. They're fun! The bread is very soft, but because of that has trouble standing up to all the fillings sometimes. Just a bit of a crust on those lovely rolls would have been ideal. Our favorite torta was the Texana, a mix of steak, pineapple, bacon and mozzarella. (All tortas are also topped with lettuce, tomato, red onion, a smear of refried beans, avocado, mayo and a choice of jalapeno or chipotle sauce.) The steak was cut into large chunks and mixed with lightly caramelized pineapple and thick strips of bacon, all held together by a substantial layer of melted mozz. It kind of formed one meat/cheese/pineapple patty, and that was actually perfect given all the other messy toppings. The pineapple really made this one pop. I'd suggest trying any of their tortas with pineapple. The breaded and fried steak and chicken were both very tasty. They're in various combinations of other meats and cheese, so pick what you think you'd like. Don't do the hot dog unless you really like hot dogs. I though the hot dog was just kind of weird and a distraction from the chicken milanesa. Steak milanesa, chorizo and cheese is also a great combo worth trying. The breaded steak was much more tender than I expected it to be. The chorizo is mild and they use it sparingly, almost more like a seasoning, which was fine by me since it can be greasy. One thing to note is that if you're mayo-adverse, be sure to order them without mayo. I should have, since there were pockets of lots of mayo in places. Also, skip the turkey, for the love of god. It's processed deli style, which I expected, but it's perfectly round and sliced at least 1/4-inch thick. They popped it on the griddled to lose some of the slime which I'll give them credit for... but it's just not good stuff, especially when there's freshly made milanesa! So, while the tortas were pretty good, I'd probably rather go back to try more of their extensive menu. I will most definitely be back for carnitas tacos! Two small notes: Our servers spoke English very well, so no problems there as others have had. You don't get chips and salsa, you get chips and beans. Everyone gets a small cup of frijoles borrachos, a soup-like mixture of pintos and tons of bacon, with the tortilla chips.

    Tortas are absolutely amazing. I come here for lunch with co-workers about four times a year. You haven't experienced true joy until you've had a JR King's Torta. I love the Cubana. The breaded steak is out of this world.

    How does one even begin with a place like JC's? I was introduced to this place many a year ago and it has remained a go-to ridiculously hungry moment staple of mine. As the name suggests get the crazy big comedically monstrous torta...sure there's the 'chica' size but in all seriousness go for the gusto and share with as many lucky folk you can encounter....I've known one to finish a 'grande' torta but he had just spent the last 4 days in a gas-station pizza laden suburban Sahara. Basically, this thing is huge but in company it won't last long. While this place is awesome know that it is a part of the neighborhood, go with respect and a tip for those that work so hard to keep prices like this alive.

    Ok this is a tough review. The Torta I had was Delicious. The prices are low. The people who worked there the day I went spoke enough english to help us get through ordering with a few dietary needs we had to clear up at our table. It was a really good torta. It was a juice and sauce running down my arms and getting on me Elbows Torta. But, and here it the catch, I felt terrible for the next 24 hours. It sat in my stomach so heavy. I felt actually a ltitle sick and certainly sluggish. Was it just a bad day for my body? maybe so... but if you are a torta lover, i promise you will really like this place just be careful and take part home for lunch the next day.

    We stopped in here for the first time last night to try a torta. I ordered a grande for my wife and I to split, though I cannot recall the name of it. I was surprised to see how many choices there were. I thought a torta was a torta, but this place has some really creative ones. The sandwich was good, and definitely big enough to split. It was served on a very soft roll and it had breaded steak, a big chunk of soft white cheese, American cheese, beans, mayo, and avocado. It came with jalapenos and a chipotle sauce that were both tasty. We also ordered what we thought was a side of refried beans and chips, but what appeared to be more of a soup. After reading a previous review, I think they may have just forgotten the means. I plan to call. The chips and the bean and bacon soup were both good, though I think I ate more than a days worth of salt with those. All-in-all, I really enjoyed the meal. I will got back to try some of the other sandwiches.

    Ok my dear white friends. I'm from Mexico City, and because of that, I often get the question of "hey man, I'm sick of La Fuente, where is there an authentic Mexican place?" So, there you have it, JC King's. It is located of course, in the south side. It is a small place with maybe 8 tables, and they have two loud flat screen tvs always playing the cheesiest Latin soap operas, but guys always like the sexy actresses haha. I would say the menu is very authentic from Mexico City. Their specialty is Tortas. They are basically a sandwich, on a French type bread, my favorite one is the Hawayana, that one has, lettuce, tomato, mayo, ham, pineapple, avocado, beans, cheese and a choice of jalapeños, or a chipotle sauce, the size is very reasonable, specially if you are a big Mexican like me, and it only costs $5!! you will also receive chips and a dip made with beans and bacon cooked in beer. They also offer Agua Fresca, made with various sweet fruits, their menu includes, tacos, tostadas, burritos, flautas, gorditas etc. For dessert, it is soooo good, pastel de tres leches, (three milk cake) flan, strawberries and yogurt, etc. If you want true Mexican, go there, oh, you don't need your passport but you do need a little Spanish, don't be afraid, just tell them you know Juan.

    To be clear, I have not actually eaten in the restaurant, but the J.C. Kings Torta truck parks just blocks from my house during eating hours. I'm not sure which member of my house discovered these delicious tortas, but they have caught on like wildfire, winning the affection of many Mexicans and even this gringa (I used to say things like: "Torta? What's so special? It's just a sandwich!") But really, these tortas are special, as are many I have tasted in Mexico, especially in Puebla.... but that's another story. So like Juan said, if you want authentic Mexican food, and want something other than tacos, definitely check this place out. I hear they have a number of trucks (there is always one at Burnham between 34th and 35th near the baseball diamond, kitty corner from the El Rey Plaza). Their menu is bilingual and the ingredients are standard things - ham, milanesa (breaded chicken or beef), chorizo or sausage, turkey, different cheeses, etc. But all tortas come with a thin layer of beans, avocado, mayo (overkill, IMO), veggies, and jalapeños or chipotle sauce. It doesn't sound that good, but the combo is great. Good teleras (rolls) too. There are also some unusual items for the adventurous eater, like a head cheese torta, and one that apparently makes a torta out of tamales. (Who knew??!) One hilarious (I guess not for vegetarians, but it's so Mexican, and I mean that in the most affectionate way....) menu item is a Torta Vegetariana (Vegetarian) which includes TURKEY, peppers, and cheese. Most Mexicans truly cannot fathom the idea of vegetarianism. If you really want a vegetarian option, just order any of their options without the meat. A sandwich made of beans, cheese, avocado, peppers, lettuce, tomato and onions is nothing to scoff at.
