Fantastic old-fashioned bakery with good prices and great service. These doughnuts are made fresh and made from scratch. I also love their bread, decorated cakes, and frosted cookies. My personal favorite is the chocolate honey-mooner. Delish!

Grebe's is a great old time bakery. It's the stuff my grandma would bring us.... wonderful donuts! Good old white bread. They also have hot ham and rolls that my family enjoys. Decent prices, good bakery!

Come on in and shed a tear of joy, that a bakery like this still exists and then another one that a very few do. Grebe's Bakery is like stepping into the past. Nestled in a near south side Milwaukee neighborhood. The sign, the storefront, the interior all hearken back to a time when bakeries were still family owned enterprises and the offerings while not as varied as a large commercial venue, made up for it with quality and taste. I stopped in yesterday after work to pick up some Paczki's. The sweet odor wafting over the parking lot drew me into its arms and I swooned. The bakery counter was staffed by three people, two women and a younger man. Because it was Paczki Day efficiency was the name of the game. Between them they kept the line moving at an astonishing pace and never skipped a beat. I ordered four Paczki's and they were quickly bagged and tagged so I could be on my way. Confession Time: I had barely pulled out of the parking lot before ripping into the bag and biting into the soft fruit filled Paczki. They were, in a word, sublime. I now return you to my regularly scheduled review: Grebe's does doughnuts the way they are suppose been done. When you bite into them, they taste of real ingredients and don't smack of commercialized doughnuts. The cookies are awesome, sugary, sweet everything you want in a cookie. And their Hot Cross Buns? Fogeddaboutit, just give in to temptation. In addition to an array of delicious bakery items, Grebe's also has a small deli that carries Boar's Head meats. If you are looking to step back into a simpler time, even for a moment, go to Grebe's pick up a doughnut or two and revel in the taste of a good old fashioned bakery.

Two stars because they need to get their customer service right. I felt uncomfortable being there - that is how rude this woman was. I get it - dealing with people buying gut busting crap they don't need (but act like they do) all day sucks. And a lot of people are dicks but not all of us are :(

Besides all of the fantastic standard bakery goods, how about the lunch? A Friday Fish Fry that includes 3pcs of fish, fries, mac & cheese, rye bread, & a drink for $4.99! You can't get a filet-o-fish meal at McDonalds for that price. Similar specials 5 days a week, all great deals. By the way you will not be overwhelmed by great customer service, but at these prices I'll survive without the customary pleasantries.

This is definitely a thing for the true Wisconsin-ite, which I am definitely not. Donuts were very reasonably priced but the taste was a little bit too heavy for me. It was REAL dough. They were extremely heavy and I found them a bit hard to eat. Be prepared to stand in line on a Sunday morning if you want anything. Every time we pass this place during business hours it's packed, so that has to say something. If you're looking for a calorie-fest, this is a great place for you, but for the casual dessert eater that's happy with a piece of yellow cake with butter cream frosting from a grocery store, it's a little too much for me.

Nostalgia at its Finest. It's like a place from the movies. Large neon signs, old ladies that refuse to die dishing donuts, hot ham on Sundays, and a stellar bacon sandwich in the morning. Stay Classy Grebes! Also, continue making my neighborhood (Lincoln Manor) smell delicious during the summer.

We went because it was really close and we just wanted a light lunch. Light lunch. And we left with lunch, four donuts, an entire cake, and a gallon of milk. We had to stop ourselves from adding a few cookies decorated like Hank (the Brewers' dog). All of that came to $20, which we thought was really reasonable. (Especially considering milk was $3.50 since you are not buying it from a grocery store.) Everything was SO GOOD. All of it very fresh. The sandwiches were big, too. Some people have mentioned that the employees were rude. We didn't find them to be rude. They were busy, and it is true that they kind of assume you are an insider and you know everything about the place, but we were offered help several times. The following didn't make my experience bad (thus the five stars) but are good things to know going in: It's primarily a bakery, and since we were there for lunch it was a little unclear at first what was available to order. They have hot options during the week, but not on the weekend. They have deli options Monday-Saturday. It just took us a minute to find that menu and to know what we could order. There was no inside seating, and there is no drive thru. Your only option is to go inside and take it home. :)

I tend not to be a sweet breakfast kind of gal. In fact, I'll pass on doughnuts most days. But, I ended up here on a rainy Saturday morning. The ladies inside were friendly and happy, although they looked like they could get a little gruff with you if you ordered something ridiculous. There wasn't much of a wait. They have a great selection of sugary breakfast...doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, something called a Persian (but without nuts, and I'm now told they're supposed to have nuts...but I liked mine better without nuts). There are also lots of cookies and cupcakes and plenty all decorated cute for the under-12 demographic. Prices were really good. I got 4 doughnuts and a loaf of French bread for about 5 bucks. They look to have hot ham and rolls on Sunday as well - will have to check that out. Remember how I said I didn't like doughnuts most days? I inhaled at least two of the doughnuts within 5 minutes of getting home. Yum.

Haven't heard of this bakery before stopping at a local speedway gas station seeing the little Easter cookies they had for sale on a fuel stop run. Figure I'd get a cute turtle cookie (probably loaded sweet with sugar), I took a bite out of it and it was amazingly light not too sweet and DELICIOUS! I had to find this little bakery on its front cover! They offered same cookies there plus breads, deli meats and of course delicious pastries! I think I found a new love for another bakery I've found in the milwaukee area. Service was okay, our cashier was a young sweet girl who was cordial in asking if we needed assistance or questions. I could see why other reviews rated less stars but this bakery is amazing. The food is delicious the people who runs it they're on a mission so don't get in their way just know what you want, they're not mean they just know how to make things run their way which in my opinion, the right way. Thanks for providing us with such an amazing place to get delicious foods Grebes! I'll be back again! Check it out guys!

Old school at its finest! Since I had the worst time getting a cake from the giant blue discount retailing monster, I stopped into Woodman's in Menomonee Falls to see what my options were. The theme for my son's second birthday was Thomas the Tank Engine Train. Luckily, the cake binder contained a Thomas cake, and it would be made by Grebe's Bakery. Let me tell you, the cake was really good. I was not sure if I would like it because of all the colors and detail required to make the cake, but it came together nicely and it did not have the dyed to death taste to the frosting either. We went with chocolate cake, and it was moist and tasted fresh. A nod to the Grebe's-Woodman's business relationship: I am glad I stopped into Woodman's who also accommodated me after the bakery was closed for the day! My order was taken, and I received a call the next day and was told my cake would be ready by Saturday. Now that is customer service!

The deli potato salad must use a recipe from a 1950s cook book. Lots of egg yolks and mustard. You need a background check to purchase because, IT WILL MAKE YOU FART BULLETS. The ONLY REDEEMING thing about Grebe's Bakery is the kick ass vintage sign out front (see my photo). After photographing the Flickr out of the sign I went in to see what Grebe's is all about. Walking through the door is like traveling in time back forty years. Flickering fluorescent tube lighting, gawdy Valentines decorations, empty shelves. Ordered a frosted sugar cookie, potato salad and cheese danish. The workers lived up to their stations in life (think fake tans, fake nails, fake blonde, serious rude attitudes). My wife asked for a small container of potato salad, the ONLY FUCKING potato salad in the deli case. The sassy worker was like "well which one!?", clearly being difficult on purpose. TASTED: The sugar cookie was inedible, with frosting tasting like pure shortening. The cheese danish tasted like lemon, dry, gross - like a convenience store pastry. POST: Take photos of the cool sign (which like the employees isn't the brightest because it's missing a lot of light bulbs) and skip whatever 1970s bull shit is going on inside. Think OPPOSITE of a place like Rocket Baby Bakery.

Best place to get Sunday hot ham and rolls! Go early to avoid waiting too long. I'm not a doughnut person, but my kid loves them :)

South side legend! Growing up on the South Side of Milwaukee brings me back to Sunday ham and rolls from Grebes along with some if the best donuts in town. Nothing has changed. Great bread, cookies, cakes, donuts, and hot ham/rolls on Sundays. If you want a taste old the old days with great prices and great baked goods, Grebes is your jam!

I've always been a huge fan of pastries and I've been subjected to Grebe's donuts for years as a life long south sider. I've always thought they were a bit overrated. The chocolate long john tastes like they spread store bought frosting on a really big dinner roll. Definitely not my thing. These are the same donuts you find at local Speedway gas stations and while I pass up these donuts on most days, my young daughter loves their frosted smiley face cookies. So when the Speedway close by had no cookies to offer, I decided to be "SuperDad" and grab some cookies at the source. I walk in early Sunday afternoon and I'm hit straight in the face by the smell of hot ham. Instantly I decide that this trip will be for more than just mere cookies. I walk in and I don't grab a number right away so I can decide what I want and maybe have some pastries that are not offered at the gas station. I pick out a few things, grab a number and get all my questions in order so I can be quick about things and not hold up the line. The bakery is laid out pretty well and has a lot to offer. It has that old time nostalgic feel that I absolutely love. It's too bad the service doesn't hold up. A woman in her late 40's/early 50's yells "11!" and I run up quick. I start her off by having her grab me the cookies, and while she grabs the cookies I ask her what flavor the turnovers are. You would have thought I had asked to borrow her car as she rolled her eyes and said "Apple!". While most turnovers are apple, I would hate to grab what I thought was an apple turnover only to bite into it and find out it is cherry. I figured I was being too much of a burden, so I told her I think I'll only have the cookies today and walked out with a lot less than I was planning to. I understand that some people think that this type of rude behavior is "cute", but sometimes it's ridiculous. I'd rather spend my bucks at the fifty other hardworking bakeries in the area that are happy to answer very simple questions about the products they offer.

THEE best doughnuts in the city. Speedway gas stations carry them and they are a guilty pleasure of mine. This recent trip , however, involved a made to order liver sausage sandwich ( another guilty pleasure! ) and a darn tasty bunny sugar cookie. The staff is an all ages/ walks of life medley of people who always make a trip there fun and friendly. You can't beat it. This naughty little lunch of mine was just over 4 bucks.

I only recently started going to Grebes, my fiancé told me about it and we stopped to get some hot ham and rolls for a party we were hosting. It was absolutely delicious and super affordable. We've been making it a weekly stop since.

Best donuts ever! Amazing hot ham and rolls on Sunday too. When I cone home to visit this is a must stop place on Sunday!! Go early in the morning though because the place is packed with people. Grab a number and wait but the ladies are fast at getting people in and out.

I love this little place. I have only bought bakery here so I can't comment on the rest. I recently started a job on the south side of Milwaukee and needed to get donuts for the staff. I figured there couldn't be a better place on the south side than the Grebe's bakery. It's so typical south side (in all charming and positive ways) that I keep coming back. I love to people watch while I'm waiting for my bakery too. It's this tiny little bakery that clearly has a steady stream of consistent customers that come in often. If you can sit back and enjoy all of the nuances that the south side has to offer, you'll enjoy it! The donuts are great, prices are right, and they have a wide selection of bakery. While I was only there for donuts, they have the old fashion Yellow Smiley Face cookies that all kids love. I had to pick some up for my kids b/c it's so old school great. One of my favorite things about them is that when I call for about 100 donuts, I am usually doing this about an hour or so before I come in. I don't mean to be that rude and call so last minute, but I tend to forget until the morning of. They pull together an order so fast and don't pause at my tardiness in requesting such a big order. Great for last minute thinkers like me. I will continue to go here and maybe I'll try some non-bakery stuff as well!

Gosh, who doesn't love a fresh doughnut?! Grebe's will not disappoint. The honeymooners and cheese pockets are amazing. The hot ham is worth waiting in the long line for (make sure to take a number on Sunday!). I recently went here to get their Hank cookies. To. Die. For. The buttercream frosting was at least and inch thick and complimented the sugar cookie so well. Just so good. I pass Grebe's on the way home from work and you can almost always get a whiff of the fresh doughnuts being cooked right around 5:30pm. Love it! My only complaint about Grebe's is the customer service is spotty. It all depends on which lady helps you and what kind of mood they are in. Stopped here twice this week and got both bad and good service.

I've got friends that have been telling me to go to Grebe's for donuts for months. When a friend came into town, I saw the opportunity to get a box without my husband and I eating it all alone. Unfortunately, by the time I arrived, they'd sold out of several varieties of donuts. The ones we were able to get were delicious.

A must-stop for stollen fans. This place is so amazingly quaint and feels a bit like a blast from the past. In the past month they've provided me with a sheet cake with a picture on it and multiple stollens for my grandmother - which made her very, very happy. You used to be able to find Grebe's in places like Super America gas stations and Sentry stores, but as those have disappeared, I've run out of places to look for Grebe products and have instead gone straight to the source. The ladies in the store are so nice and there's always a case full of cookies, cupcakes and doughnuts so you end up leaving having purchased more goodies than you planned on. The cake I had the image put on was a slight bit of a head scratcher, as I provided a rather large image that was oriented to have the cake be more vertical than horizontal, but they shrunk the picture and it ended up being kind of small in the middle of the large, horizontal cake. But it still looked good and tasted great, so it really wasn't a big deal. They are one of the few "discount" style places that will do a filled sheet cake, too, which its great and their prices were competitive with Sam's Club and Pick N' Save.

What's there to say, Milwaukee standard. Been coming here since I was 5. If you want fresh bakery-you go to Grebe's especially on Sunday after Church.

Received an awesome surprise bday cake from this company. It was so light and refreshing that we had it for dessert the next morning too!!! This is my go to bakery from now on. I can't believe it took an out of town boyfriend to hook me on this place. Can't wait to celebrate his birthday in a few months with one of these cakes. So good!

Whenever I am back home in Milwaukee....if it's Sunday, it's hot ham/rolls and cheese pockets at Grebe's. I was so road weary getting in late Saturday night, but as soon as the sun was up all I could think about was getting to Grebe's before they ran out of cheese pockets! Now I read that they do a fish fry? Can't wait to try it! My first job was at Meurer's Bakery (da competition). Going into Grebe's brings back all kinds of memories, smells and old ladies behind the counter. A great Milwaukee tradition that I hope never goes away.

One of the highlights of living in our neighborhood is Grebe's bakery. When we moved into our neighborhood this was one of the first places we were told to go. We are in luck that it is in walking distance. I try to make it my rule that I can only eat grebe's IF I walk there, therefore counteracting some of the damage caused by baked goods. It has been mentioned that the behind the counter staff can be a little less then friendly, but I believe it adds to the charm. You get a "what'ya want hun" true Milwaukee style. If you are not prepared or ask too many questions you will get grimaced and sighed at but hey, no one complains at Cranky Al's. Two things I like about Grebes...the donuts and the price. For cheaper then the local grocery chain you get higher quality. Probably higher fat too, but its a donut! I LOVE their honeymooner donut, it is my all time favorite. Second are their crullers. They also offer deli sandwiches and hot ham. And, my daughter would have you know...they give you (if you are a small child) a free cookie upon entering!

I spend some time near the coffee pot at work. Once in a while, someone drops a box of Grebe's doughnuts. Having never tried one, I could never possibly write a review about the Grebe's experience. But now that I have established myself as a regular, it is time, but I still have not had a doughnut. When it comes to satisfying my need for food, I like meats. Good meats. Lot of meats. The deli at Grebe's is quick and sharp. Fill out a sandwich form with your selection of bread, Boar's Head meats, and fixings. You will be out of there just as fast as the Culver's drive thru. And, you better watch out. Some of the sassiest and nicest ladies in town run the show at Grebe's and they only get sassier with age.

  • Chad W.

Who doesn't like a good pastry? And I am not talking the air filled doughnuts you find at some of these chain places. I mean REAL pastries. Sublime. In a utopian world, Grebe's would be the only bakery allowed to serve their sweet treats. I grew up in a small town with a small town bakery in it. They had great doughnuts there, but these - these blow the home down place out of the water! You don't often find a place like this anymore, especially with all the chains now. What you will find here are some of the most filling and tasty doughnuts around. And when it comes to substance, these are what you want. For the same price as the skimpy air filled doughnuts of some other places, you get some great, dense, filling doughnuts. Plus, order 12 and get a baker's dozen! Oh, and when it comes to getting all the doughnuts - the staff here are real pros at keeping track of how many doughnuts are in your order already! They are very patient when you work through your selection... if you are anything like me - it can be a little stressful making the right selections! To make things go more smoothly on busy days, they have a ticket system in place. Even when it is packed here, they seem to keep things moving along at a pretty quick pace! Stop in and enjoy some good ol' pastries from here!

I was passing the cermak deli case while shopping and thought some nice premium deli lunch meat sandwiches on fresh baked bread would make a great lunch for a few days. I grabbed my meats and cheese and went to the fresh baked bread isle but I couldn't find onion rolls which I thought would be perfect. So I knew this bakery was around the coroner and went there and there they were with just a few left. I grabbed a bag and I don't usually eat donuts but staring at me was a tray of what looked like glazed cake donuts so I got two as well. My bill was a little over $3.00 for a just made great quality product. I'm not a big dough nut fan but dam they were good. Dun kin dough nuts is what I was use to at jobs so I didn't care much for them but after having a quality dough nut I just might grab a couple from time to time. I want to try more of there products. Good deli meats need great bread so if you are going to shell out for premium deli meats wonder bread just won't do. This will be a regular place for me. It's busier on Sunday mornings so take a number but it's worth the wait. The staff was great to me and as previous posts had problems that I didn't experience at all. I think if they threw the bags at me I would still go back. I don't usually shop at bakery's as you can see by my reviews but I just might put it on my list of quests for the best in Milwaukee.

I'm not a big fan of donuts, but once you've had Grebe's, you can easily get hooked. Their cake donuts are absolutely fantastic, and makes the pastries you get at Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme taste like store-bought air puffs.

    (5)
  • H C.

If you are grabbing a quick donut from any of the local gas stations around the area, chances are it is a Grebe's. Although they are good, nothing is better than a fresh donut right from the bakery on Lincoln. Grebe's donuts are what donuts should be. Big, Heavy, Sweet and Fresh! They have a large selection of not only donuts, but also have a deli that serves of up hot ham and rolls. Grebe's isn't a secret, so you can expect a long wait on Sunday mornings. But, they open early during the week, so it you want to impress your co-workers stop in for a Baker's Dozen on the way in to the office. Grebe's is as real as it gets when it comes to old school bakery and deli.

    (4)
  • Rachel K.

Sure Grebe's has really great, old-fashioned pastries and doughnuts, but the reason we go there is their excellent selection of Boar's Head meats and cheeses at the cheapest price in town. You can also build-your-own sandwich with Boar's Head meat and cheese on your choice of freshly baked breads, croissant, or hard rolls. There's a great selection of sauces and veggies to finish it off. Get a side order of Gramma's Potato Salad and a smiley face cookie for dessert! The service might not be the fastest and the ladies might occasionally be a little grumpy, but that's all part of the charm for me. I found the more regular you are, the better the service.

I arrived at the shop a little after 9 and I crowd of people awaited me. After a few minutes I was informed that I had to take a number. I waited about 15 minutes until I was called. The donuts, bread, and ham were well worth the wait, hot and fresh!! I will definitely be going back :)

This place does high quality sugar rush like no other. Enter the front door only if you've already decided the diet will start tomorrow, because you won't be leaving here with anything that even vaguely resembles weight loss friendly fare. You name your favorite donut, and Grebe's will have it, freshly baked and ready to eat for a RIDICULOUSLY low price. Creme or jelly filled, long johns, coffee dunkers - buy it and love it. An important note: their decorated cookies are amazing. I know, most people don't get too excited over cookies, but these cookies are worth making a special exception for. Trust me - you can find deliciously frosted cows, turtles (with hats), flowers (with a ladybug) on top of succulently soft sugar cookies. Eating these cookies is an afternoon long event. Savor it. Grebe's also does "make your own" sandwiches - choose from soft breads, quality meats and cheeses, and any condiment you want - for (again) a ridiculously cheap price. A gentleman we encountered in the parking lot pretty much summed up the greatness of Grebe's - as he sat in his car, devouring his sandwich, he leaned out the window and said, "it's so good, I couldn't wait to get home to eat it." Word.

I am from Milwaukee, and I bought a Groupon for Grebe's. The woman behind the counter was downright mean and cheap. This was after Easter and she tried to point me to Easter goods still marked full price (they were dry and stale). When I bought a dozen rolls, she gave me only 12 even though they have a big sign saying they do baker's dozens. Overall their bakery is OK, nothing special, their bear claws were a bit dry and not very flavorful. But their attitude is unfriendly and unwelcoming. Also, they put no dates on their breads and packaged items and no prices. I thought this was illegal. I would say go to another traditional Milwaukee bakery instead, like National Baking on 16th Street just south of Oklahoma. They have higher quality items and are friendly. Grebe's is a definite SKIP!
