The Gouda Special is absolutely amazing! It is by far the best thing on the menu but that's because I think it's so good (I've only tried it and the Tommy Gun, which is also very good but I like the toasted Gouda Special even better.) The roast beef was extremely tender and the sauce and fixings were great too. I also enjoy the large dill pickles - better than Disneyland! haha. Bonus: Peter and Sal who run the place are so nice and accommodating they helped me out majorly with a shoot we were doing for a mobile app called VIM in the shop. Also, they carry Peronis (and many other Italian goods)! Next time I'm in Milwaukee my crew and I will definitely be back!

such a great place and couldn't recommend it more. i go here at least once a week - if your downtown often it's a great option from the other things available in the area - it has a quaint and classic italian deli/grocery vibe, theres a few tables inside, or get it to go and head across the street to the river walk. the bread is amazing - the sandwiches are classic, simple and to the point - if you're like the others on here that want a overcompensating 'loaded' sandwich, stick with your subway :)

Forgive me, Yelp, for I am writing this review as I'm eating. It's been months since the last time I enjoyed takeout lunch out on a weekday, and I'm extremely satisfied. Thank you for my penance of 10 Hail Gouda's - served with a smile! I did not know that Gouda's is owned by Surg Restaurant Group. Perusing them on the web from my office nearby, I was surprised to see they also had market items listed on the website. I've walked by many times and wondered - it always looks tiny. Stepping inside, the space is indeed small but very thoughtfully laid out. A simple refrigerated deli counter separates you from your sandwich preparation. A few bistro tables line the open walls for customers. There's a shelf of pantry goods on the side. To the right is a very eye-appealing shelf lining the entire wall up to the ceiling, with a single refrigerated counter of Italian beverages and such in front of it. Now, I live within walking distance of Glorioso's, so I don't need to shop here. But it's a great addition to the Third Ward. I placed my order for a signature Il Grande Tacchino, a panini sandwich that is literally as big as 2 separate sandwiches. It's really flavorful, with Turkey, Gouda Cheese and Artichoke Spread. It set me back a whopping $7 and change. Not bad for a sandwich. I like the artichoke spread and am contemplating trying to make some. Yummy. I am sort of spoiled on paninis in that my first came from the incredible Cafe' LuLu (grilled cheese and avocado sandwich) and the second from AJ Bombers (grilled cheese and bacon sandwich). Those paninis were seriously crunchy. I am guessing the inside and outside of the bread were toasted before making the sandwich. This sandwich is panini-toasted after assembly, so the inside of the bread isn't toasted. There's a crunch factor here, but the mouth feel is more soft. Not as crunchy, not really chewy, just soft. I kind of miss it. On the plus side though, I'm sure all that toasting takes up valuable prep time. And in a deli, time is precious. It was just a few minutes later that my sandwich was wrapped up and delivered to my hands - literally hot off the panini press. Very very good. If you want a spot of authentic Italian in the Third Ward, its a great place to check out. You can enjoy cannoli, spumoni, Peroni beer, and take out daily home-cooked specials and take and bake pizzas with curbside delivery. Lots to love about that!

Gouda's is a charming Italian deli located in the Third Ward. I had a pleasant experience. The guy running the shop was inviting, and when he found out I was a newcomer, he gave me a nice rundown of the menu, and recommended on what I should order. I decided on the "Gouda's Special" signature sandwich. The wait wasn't long at all. I was in and out in less than five minutes. When I got home, I finally bit into my sandwich, and it was tasty. I'm not a meat lover but the roast beef was tender and packed with flavor. The cheese was still warm, and oozing as I bit into it, while the banana peppers added a nice kick to the sandwich. Unfortunately, my second visit did not go so well. I had to knock off a star because the "Campagniola" panini I ordered was unsettling. The bread was dry, the prosciutto was off-putting, and the provolone was hard. I didn't have the same person as last time so I might've gone on an off day? I do agree with the other reviewers, and say the ratio of bread to sandwich fixings are skewed. However, the whimsical environment gave me a nice break from the Third Ward, and the "Gouda's Special" did remind me a bit of the sandwiches I had in Italy. I'd recommend checking this place out if you're in the neighborhood.

Yelp! to the rescue again while in Milwaukee with the kids for a day off. Italian sandwiches like I remember as a kid in the North End of Boston. Even both of my daughters commented on the bread and how perfect it was for those subs. This is s "DOn't Miss" if you want a GREAT lunch for an amazing price. There are two meals in these sandwiches as they're as big as your head... You'll want to re-live this experience so take some home. The shop is a small Italian grocery store that you'd see in a movie. Again, took me way back. The building also houses a Speakeasy in the rear that you have to see. Well worth it and you MUST try the Tommy gun Sandwich. It's tough NOT to love a place that takes you back to your childhood. Terrific place and a cool experience.

Gouda's is small deli and specialty shop with dry pastas, sauces, and a few meats and cheeses. The menu features five signature sandwiches, three signature paninis, and a build-your-own sandwich section. Sandwiches start at $6.95, chips or other sides are extra. I ordered the Tommy Gun which is filled with Genoa Salami, Mortadella, Capocollo, Calabrese, Prosciutto, Provolone, Muffalatta mix, and something called "Da Juice" which I'll assume is an olive oil mix. The meats come from Hidden Creek Farm in New London, WI, which is owned by one of the primary owners of SURG Restaurant Group, which also owns Gouda's. I was expecting it to be served on Italian bread, but it seemed to be a regular hoagie roll. It wasn't particularly soft. The texture was similar to that of a bread roll that was a day or two old. I think Italian bread, crispy on the outside and soft inside, would have made this good sandwich into a great sandwich and worthy of 4 stars. They offer different specials daily. Today featured a 3 formagi panini with tomato soup for $6.99, which I think is a good deal but they were out when I got there. I might return to try the Siciliano panini with rocotta, marinated eggplant and arugula, which sounds pretty good.

A relatively recent entry to the Third Ward lunch options. I would frequent this place more often, but they close at 6pm on weekdays, so its hard to make it there after work for their great take-and-bake italian dishes and specials. Their sandwiches are relatively straight forward in style, but their meat selection is stellar. They source their deli meats from a local Wisconsin establishment and you can definitely taste the difference. If you have trouble making it there before it closes... you could always walk around to the alley way entrance... and get a drink at the hidden speakeasy bar... Bugsy's.

Had their cheese/sausage pizza and it was delicious. Quaint sitting area and delicious deli case. Bought some olives, Italian olive salad and some lunch meats. I will definitely be back!

100% backed. Not quite as homie as Scardina's and not the same history as Glorioso's but on par or better with food. Very friendly guys. Excellent food.

Just went there for the first time and I have to tell you that this may be the best kept secret in Milwaukee!!! I had a deli sandwich and the freshness and combination of Italian flavors were unprecedented! The service was great and the staff knowledgeable! Do yourself a favor and stop in! You won't be disappointed! Mike Y.

How cute is Gouda's? Finally, a deli on Water St, to take over the old Centanni. Gouda's has a couple of tiny tables to sit at (inside or out), but seems mostly like a grab and go kinda place. They offer all sorts of European treats (coffee, chocolate, wine/beer, olive oil, sparkling water) in addition to their sandwiches/meats. I've been here twice now and both times ordered sandwiches. Now, I'm not an expert, but seems like I should be able to get a sandwich to go in less than 20 minutes. No such luck. I'll chalk that up to them being brand new. Both times, the sandwiches are not super fantastic though. The flavors really spark, but the enormous piece of bread that the toppings are served on takes over the entire sandwich. Hello? Can I please get some meat, cheese, veggies, spread, etc with my HUGE piece of bread? It felt as though I paid $8 for massive carb overload.

This place was great! We shared a sandwich that cost about$8.00 and it was more than enough for the two of us. It was so delicious and made to order specially for us. Great little hidden gem on Water street.

I ordered the Tommy Gun and was very pleased with it. I got mine hot and would give it a 9.5/10, the bread was a little hard for my tastes.Taste and portion is a great value. I'm definitely going back this week, they also have a rewards card that does not require paperwork or 'signing up' which I like. The only negatives would be the size makes it hard to eat inside and there isn't an incredible sandwich variety you see in a place like Glorioso's.

Gouda's is great if you want a quality sandwich very quick. I would suggest getting the Tommy Gun which is filled with Genoa Salami, Mortadella, Capocollo, Calabrese, Prosciutto, Provolone, Muffalatta mix, and the "Da Juice." However, the sandwiches are also HUGE.

Really like this place! I've had 2 sandwiches there now, the bugsy Moran and the the il grande tacchino. While I didn't completely love the tacchino, I would order the bugsy again and again. I think the proportions of meat, cheese and olive spread are perfect. And that olive spread, come on! Yummy! I have seen some reviews complaining about the bread, but on both sandwiches, it seemed quite fresh and perfectly crusty. I thought the ratio to fillings was good as well. I think for the price, these sandwiches are filling and worth the money! I will definitely return and try more!

I ordered the Bugsy Moran sandwich which consisted of: ham, swiss and olive spread on Italian bread. I felt the proportions of meat and cheese to bread were a bit off. The sandwich looks enormous when you first bite into it, because it's served on a huge piece of Italian bread. Both the ham and swiss on the sandwich were outstanding, and very fresh tasting. I just needed maybe a slice or two more on there. The olive spread was good, but again the sandwich needed more of it. I was surprised to see a lack of veggies on many of the sandwiches, which would have been nice to offset the carbs. The lentil soup very good (and salty) but not overly salty. But I generally like my soup pretty salty....Gouda's is small, so you won't find a large selection of Italian grocery items or a huge deli (you'll have to stop at Glorioso's for that). The only other negative was this place was hotter than hell, even on a cold day.

What an absolutely dreadful experience. A few weeks back I stopped in here with a couple friends from school to grab a quick lunch and was severely disappointed with what I got. We each ordered a sandwich, pasta salad and a drink. I ordered a tuna sandwich with mozzarella, tomato and basil and asked that it be warmed up on the panini press even though it was listed under the cold sandwiches. The guy at the cash register acted like it was the weirdest request he ever heard and I said it would be like a tune melt. He said okay. When I got my sandwich it was ice cold and the tuna was like a paste, despite not being mixed with any mayonnaise. The texture was really off putting and it tasted fishy, which is weird for tuna to taste fishy. I couldn't eat but a couple bites of it before throwing it away. My one friend ordered a roast beef special and I can't remember what my other friend ordered, but neither were very pleased with their sandwich either for reasons I can't remember off the top of my head. I was hoping I could at least eat the pasta salad but after a few bites of dried out, oily pasta salad with zero seasoning I threw that in the garbage too, but not before I noticed the date on the container said it was SIX DAYS OLD! Even my peach tea was disgusting, and it was supposedly imported from Italy. My friend called and complained, but whoever he spoke to didn't seem too concerned with our complaints nor did he see a big deal in selling people week old pasta salad. Save your money and go someplace else. There's a Jake's Deli in the Grand Avenue Mall now, there's Waterfront Deli, there's Potbelly, there's Capriotti's, and even Cousin's and Jimmy John's would be preferable to wasting your money at this place.
