Want to feel like you're on vacation without crossing any state lines? This place is a hidden gem & like nothing else in the city. On a sunny day you can almost trick your brain into believing you're in Key West instead of Wisconsin. Sipping on a Pirate Punch on the deck at Barnacle Bud's will transport you to another place - a beachy, vacation style atmosphere with great drinks & seafood. The grouper Reuben surprised me on my last visit - tasty noms, but even tastier summery beverages. They've got beer and other options, too, but trust me...you want that punch.

Rustic place with vacation-ish atmosphere, outdoor seating only - so the opportunities are limited, this being Milwaukee. The river doesn't smell too bad most days and the forklift traffic across the property isn't necessarily dangerous if you pay close attention. Parking is very limited and evidently if the management doesn't like your technique, they call the cops to write you a $200 parking ticket for a "handicapped" violation, never mind the fact that you park on an adjacent, unmarked spot. So. for this kind of money there are plenty of much, much better choices available. And full-sized beers. I certainly won't be back, ever. Or even mention that it exists.

You don't visit Barnacle Bud's for the food. Trust me. You visit Barnacle Bud's solely for the atmosphere. In what other town, city, metro area, country or universe can you find a PLACE LIKE THIS? If you can direct me, I'd be greatly appreciative. Five stars for ambiance + uniqueness alone. Plus, buckets of tiny beers!

There is so much to look at!! This was a fun place to hang out. Great drink deals (we went at 5 ish on a Friday), the food was good enough, the staff was fun and friendly. Added bonus of watching a massive forklift put boats in the river. Overall, fun little spot!

Descriptive phrase: hidden river patio. Barnacle Bud's is darn hard to locate, though that makes its spot on the KK River all the more secluded and wonderful (if a bit industrial). It's like the opposite of Horny Goat; BB's is no-frills, no marketing, and no complaints. Our Dark and Stormy's were good, as was my Cajun Grouper Sandwich. It's chill and relatively cheap and a wonderful spot to spend a sunny afternoon. My only complaint is they have no bike parking.

The food was okay, nothing special, but I have never had such friendly service! Everyone I met here was unbelievably friendly and seemed to really enjoy their job. The atmosphere is also a nice change for Milwaukee, it is a beachy, tiki feel along the river with boats to watch. I had a wonderful time and will be back. The only bad thing was sitting outside with no breeze there were some pesky gnats, no butting bugs, but that is eating outdoors in Wisconsin. A candle or two on the table might have helped.

Barnacle Bud's is a little bit like a Jimmy Buffet song that's come alive along the shores of the Kinnickinnic River. This is a very casual, fun atmosphere that's undoubtedly one of the best spots to enjoy drinking outdoors in the warm summer months. Order a jelly jar glass cocktail-like the Bloody Mary or vodka-infused fruit punch-or a bucket of cold beers to sip with friends while at one of the rustic wooden picnic tables on the deck while listening to live music. In addition to a full bar, there's a full menu of appetizers, sandwiches and entrees. Seafood is the main staple of the menu at Barnacle Bud's. The crab cake sandwich and coconut battered shrimp basket are among my favorites. You also can't go wrong with the Friday fish fry. All of the above are served with generous portions and a side of fries. If you've never been to Barnacle Bud's it can feel like you're in the wrong place while looking for the entrance, as the building is tucked away in a particularly industrial section of Bay View, behind a boat service and storage facility. Once you actually locate the place, though, it's as though you've traveled to the Florida Keys without leaving Milwaukee. Expect to stick around for a few rounds in this comfortable spot.

This place has location going for it and the themed beachy dive bar idea is cool, but that's it. I have been here plenty of times and each time it gets a little longer between each visit. Today was just a beautiful day and made the "Sunday Funday" an easy idea. Barnacle buds was the first stop and it was a short stop. The service staff just aren't that friendly and it really makes me feel as though they just dread people here. Sat in the back today. When we arrived a friend and I were just going to sit at the bar and began to order a drink as we did so a few friends walked up and invited us to their table. We were then told that we cannot order at the bar and sit at the table, that we have to be served by a server- okay, I get it. But we were joining a group, that was going to get larger with people we didn't know. So I asked if we could have a separate tab then. I got the "umm.... Not sure if we can do that, let me think, it's really hard" blah, blah, blah... Really? What option do I have. Then I try to request 3 different drinks: we don't have grapefruit juice, we don't have bitters, we don't have pacifico. Okay.... I will just take a miller lite. And on top of that, it was just really apparent that she just didn't want to come back to the table. The drinks are a little pricy here, but I am totally willing to pay for the atmosphere- but after one drink and an overall crummy experience, I closed out my tab and headed to another with a patio. In a city with options, you may need to step up your game.

What a great hidden treasure. It's fun to watch the boats come in and out, both in the water and out of the storage area. It's not a place with top notch food... but it is a place you can come to suck down a few beers for an afternoon while listening to some lives music. It's a gem, and worth a shot to relax at if you have a few hours you want to kill.

The atmosphere bumps this place up to four stars. I don't know where else in Milwaukee you can feel like you are in Key West or another tropical destination. If you go and the front deck is full note that there is an entire back bar behind the restaurant. If you can find this place without using navigation you can definitely find the back bar! Service can be hit or miss here but the servers do try their best. The miss days are when they are understaffed for the weather (don't know why they don't read forecasts). The food is nothing spectacular so don't expect to be overwhelmed. I personally stick with the grouper or peel and eat shrimp which are hard to screw up. Sometimes they run out of items like PBR or other beer choices. I understand that you want to run your place tight but don't run out of staple items. If they upped the food quality, availability of items and service this place could be rated much better. However, I don't seem to mind on a nice summer day basking here and throwing back a couple of cold ones. Come for the booze and sun and go into Bay View for dinner!

You almost forget you are in Milwaukee when sitting on the patio, which overlooks the Kinnickinnic River, at Barnacle Bud's. It seriously feels like a place you would find in Florida. We got lucky and actually found this place (it is a challenge if you aren't on a boat cruising up the river), and there were many open tables on a Saturday afternoon. It was an overcast day but it was still very nice to be sitting outside, watching the boats go by, and enjoying a delicious cocktail and yummy food. Our waiter was great and answered all our questions regarding the drink and food options. Definitely ask what the specialty cocktails are because they are superb! I had the Pirate Punch, which was a spin on the classic rum punch, and my fiancée had some sort of fruity concoction with pear vodka, and we also split a dark &stormy (a A+ worthy drink!). All the beverages are served in mason jars, which is always fun. For food, I had the shrimp po boy and my fiancée had the grouper po boy. I never had a po boy before and wasn't sure what to expect but I LOVED it!!!! The shrimp were large, perfectly grilled, and the sandwich was all around outstanding. The "spicy" mayo, which is served on the side, had incredible flavor and wasn't very spicy - I much prefer flavor spice to hot spice. You also get a side of jalapenos (I'll pass, thanks) and a side of your choice. I had fries because French fries are one of my guilty pleasures. The grouper po boy was equally as awesome. The fish was grilled and a very large piece, much larger than the bun. And it was **so good**, I know what I am ordering the next time I come here! They also offer a grouper fish fry - I need to try that as well. I highly recommend Barnacle Bud's if you are looking for summertime fun. The people that were pulling up their boats and getting lunch looked like they were having a blast. Great patio, excellent service, incredible food and drinks. I will for sure be coming back!

Great for drinks and the atmosphere. The food I tried was only okay. The wings, which are supposed to be good here, were pretty much ruined because they were coated in rosemary. Whyyy? So yeah, I'd focus more on the drinks and hanging out. I'm finishing this review a few months after my visit to Barnacle Bud's as the dead of winter is about to descend on Milwaukee. Needless to say, I'd love to be at Barnacle Bud's sitting outside and sipping a drink right about now.

Not for salads. I ordered the jumbo shrimp salad. The options was either iceberg or "Caesar" lettuce (they mean romaine). I received the salad soggy and wet and a small portion of overcooked shrimp. The waitress was disinterested, short and not helpful. She put in the wrong order for the others in my party despite them specifying specifically what item they ordered. The atmosphere was cool and the patio was awesome right next to the Kk river.

A 5 star location with mostly single-star eats. Tucked away and located on the river, this place has some seriously great vibes. A nice spot to grab a drink on a sunny day and just chill out. If the charming sea-shanty aesthetic was paired with something more than mostly drive-thru quality food, this place could be quite the gem.

I have been to Barnacle Bud's many times so I know you don't actually go for the food. But for the love of Bay View, is it so hard to serve something edible? I would rather have had a TV dinner. Everything was pre-made frozen and heated up. Just bad. And the service was the worst I have ever experienced. There is absolutely no excuse for horrible service and tasteless food. I admit, I did not have an alcoholic beverage so perhaps that MAY have helped - but I truly doubt it. If I go again, I will stop at any one of the excellent, decent, good, or just okay restaurants in Bay View for dinner first (ANYTHING is better than Bud's food) and have a drink at Bud's and enjoy the ambiance. Obviously that was my mistake - people, please learn from my mistake!!

This "dock" is a hidden gem in Milwaukee! Takes a bit of time and perseverance to find it, but once you do, you will NOT be disappointed! Feels like you're enjoying cocktails and seafood at an old school conch shack in the FL Keys! Delish peel and eat shrimp and fun fruity rum drinks served in mason jars. Add a bit of sunshine and you've got yourself a fun afternoon! Service is friendly and efficient. Go. Enjoy.

I have to thank Barnacle Bud's: you guys were instrumental in starting a tradition that has been foundational among by group of friends. Once every two weeks, we all get together and try a new restaurant in Metro Milwaukee. Barnacle Bud's was the first ever location, and since then, this group has ballooned from the original four of us to a group of--at its largest--16 people. It's been awhile since I've been to Barnacle Bud's, so bare with me. Mostly, I'm just waxing romantic. The restaurant itself is like an industrial oasis. It's surrounded by factories and warehouses; getting back here (unless you're on a boat) requires a series of twists and turns along crumbling, neglected streets. I was in the back seat of a friend's car; for a split second the thought that I was being taken to a deserted area to be sold to Russian mobsters running a human trafficking ring popped into my mind. Despite that, when you get back here it almost doesn't feel like you're in Milwaukee. The whole area feels so much smaller; the banter with the staff and occasionally other customers brought me back to experiences I'd had years ago living in the middle of nowhere. Barnacle Bud's is, in a sense, a lot like going to a tourist bar/restaurant in a small town up north. Everyone is just having a good time; people aren't getting stressed out or acting a fool. Maybe the river calms people. And all this from a place where you can see the tops of the buildings downtown. We ate on the patio on a muggy, summer day. It was overcast and humid. You would think that there would be more mosquitos here? Whatever they're doing, big props to Barnacle Bud's on the insect control. The food itself is alright. It's seafood in the Midwest. It's great by local comparison, but if you've had seafood on either of the coasts it might be a disappointing comparison. In the context of Milwaukee, though, it's a cut above what is usually available. I had a shrimp po' boy, and while it didn't transport me to New Orleans in a single bite, it was food that could hold its own. I really recommend this to anybody who wants to lounge for a bit, have some fun, and enjoy some good food with great friends. It's that sort of place.

Where do I start? I guess let's start with when my husband, my parents and I arrived. We were not greeted by anyone for about 5 minutes. The hostess was rude. It had been raining earlier in the day and she seemed annoyed that we wanted to wait for a table under the awning or inside the restaurant instead of sitting on the outside tables that were soaking wet. Our waitress was not much better. While we were giving our order she was popping gum and shifted her weight from one side to another as if she was irritated with us. The food was not good and the price is not worth the amount of food you get either.

  • James M.

Go for the view skip the food. Drink prices are a bit high for Bay View but nice atmosphere sitting on the dock of the KK river. Food bad and overpriced. Deep fried fish sticks would be better. Very busy on nice sunny days,

Awesome place with a Key West Feel. Beautiful boats surround the sea food shack of a place. Good waitresses, food and drinks not so bad either.

Full disclosure: Despite having read Yelp reviews for Barnacle Bud's, I still thought Siri was just messing with me when she told me in her cold, robotic voice to turn into the warehouse area that protects BB's from plain sight. After driving around the block once or twice, shouting, "But are you SURE, Siri?!" I finally turned into the drive and cautiously navigated my way to the gated area of Barnacle Bud's. And I'm glad I did. Yelpers don't lie -- on a warm summer day, this place really is borderline paradise-ish. I wasn't expecting much from the food (again, I read Yelp reviews), but my grouper reuben was actually pretty darn delicious. I just had a beer, but the cocktail menu seemed temping. It was so nice to sit outside in the sunshine along the water and boats and eat greasy seafood. Nom. Also, it's a great spot for groups - lots of picnic tables and big tables. Not sure how much parking there is - there's a row of spots definitely for Barnacle Bud's -- but it's across from a warehouse with some parking and a sign saying guard dogs are on patrol. Eek.

Great spot. Nice to bring guests or nice if you just wanna sit outside. It's fun to interact with all the boaters going down the river (we sat in the back patio) I got the crab cake Benedict and it was super Delish.

This is by far my favorite spot in Milwaukee. Being from northern FL, this reminds me of those years and it's in an unlikely spot so it's never overly crowded. It has the best outdoor deck on the water which reminds me of the Keys. I didn't eat here, but the drinks are fairly priced. This place is a gem!

Come and enjoy the deck. Feels like you are down by the ocean. Great food, amazing owner. Good time guaranteed!

Aye Captain! This place makes me feel like I'm on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean. Johnny Depp is hiding somewhere in this place. I arrived at this place by boat and immediately dug the tropical vibe. Housed between enormous boat storage units, this tropical gem is one I will be going back to visit. Great oysters and crab cakes coupled with an ice cold beer are what it's all about. Since I went for apps only, I can't speak for the entrees. Either way this river destination is all about good times.

WINTER REVIEW - Came here early April and will not come back until nice weather is here. I love this place in the summer but this experience was horrible. To start the limited menu was horrible. The service (6 people on the whole place) was horrible. I got the fish sandwich and the fish was falling apart and had no flavor. My friend ordered the burger medium rare and it came out well done; seriously horrible over cooked. Tried eating it but then sent it back and got a new one. Same result: overlooked like crazy! Waitress didn't apologize or offer to take it off the bill. Just told us that she likes her burgers essentially burnt. Again, love this place as a summer hangout but it is night and day with the winter menu. Will wait until 80 degree weather is here.

This place is hidden behind some warehouses and a boat storage facility. If you can find this place, you're already ahead of the game Their lunch menu is pretty simple, and centers around grouper, catfish, shrimp, smelt (I think) and some sandwiches (none of which include cod, or tilapia, or any other kind of fish one might normally have on a sandwich). I had a margarita on the rocks, and a catfish sandwich. Both were decent, and reasonably priced. P.S. Grouper is overrated.

A group of us decided to ride to Buds yesterday. We arrived and parked with the other motorcycles, right in front. The place is pretty cool tucked away in the industrial area of the river. The hostess was very nice, bartender was awesome, and so was our waitress. My friends ordered the Grouper Reuben, and I the Grouper PoBoy. Food arrived and the Reuben was nice and thick and fried, where the PoBoy was less than 1/4 thick and grilled. Never seen a grilled PoBoy, and why wasn't it the same cut? I'm thinking it wasnt grouper, maybe a tilapia or some other whitefish. Lesson learned, don't get the PoBoy. We go to leave and find each of us has a parking ticket. Not for parking in a no parking area like I would've accepted, but a ticket for parking on private property. We were in Barnacle Buds parking lot. Milwaukee it's made of a few things, Miller and Harley Davidson. For this place to not be bike friendly is a slap in the face. NOT BIKER FRIENDLY! First and last time. Thanks.

Fun place to go for beers in the summer. Sort of a hidden divey gem along the river. The food is average and service can be inconsistent. But can't beat the patio environment along the river. Fun!

A little piece of the tropics here in good old MKE. At first this place was just a myth the bartenders at my local watering hole told me about yet a few years ago I finally got the invite. Driving up to the place (it's more like driving between some warehouses, past some dry docks, past some fork lifts and then finally you still don't see a parking lot) I felt like I was in the Sopranos about to be whacked. Since then I have lead a few of my near and dear friends (shhhh you don't want to let too many people know) to this amazing establishment. I love the island vibe the inside has but who really sits in there? It is great to sit outside along the water and see the boating traffic and enjoy the MKE skyline from the south. I have boated up here once and driven here a handful of times and it is always a great "hidden gem." The cocktails are served in mason jars and the staff is well...upfront. If they are out of an ingredient there is no apology rather it is up to you to get something different. Great cocktails and lighter food options - I haven't had any dinner or lunch specials there so can't special to the food.

Going to Barnacle Bud's = Going on "vacation." You can pretend you are in Florida and almost believe it. I have the sunburn to prove it. Alas, what I thought would be a short stay at Bud's turned into a much longer one. The sun was shining, the drinks were cold, and Jimmi T was playing his fantastic tunes in the background. What more could you ask for in a Sunday? As one of my friends says, "A life without Jimmi T is no life at all." So if you haven't spent an afternoon here in the summer, you are missing out. I have never had the food, but honestly it could taste like chalk and I'd still give this place 5 stars. It is kind of like the buffet at a strip club- it just doesn't matter. Life is good at Barnacle Bud's.

Interesting place - definitely has a southern coast dock-side ambiance. Dinners were good but not great. Crab cake app was very good though. I don't think we'll go back...

A fellow diner at the Lakefront Brewery fish fry recommended Barnacle Bud's to us. When we read Ruthie M's comment "You need to take your friends here. They will think you're taking them into a back alley so you can kill them," we knew we had to stop in. Yes, we're weirdos like that. I probably would've bailed on this place had I been walking there myself; at night it's a desolate industrial-type area. Persevere! After a time you'll start seeing cars and just past them the discreet entrance to Barnacle Bud's. The bar abuts Skipper Bud's and leaves you feeling like you're somewhere more tropical than the Kinnickinnic River, like Key West. I'm not sure if this place is open year-round, but to me it's a summer destination. You can sit inside, but I don't think it has the same appeal. We had already eaten, so I can't comment on the grub. We did, however, grab a drink. Having indulged on beer all day, we opted for mixed drinks. I have no recollection of what we ordered, but they each came in a mason jar; his was blue and mine was pink-ish. BB's isn't a late night place, last call is around 10:30 on Friday; perfect for us since we just wanted a drink before calling it a night. Too early for the party pontoon boat that hightailed it out of there when they heard. I'm glad we found this hidden gem; if you find yourself in Milwaukee and near Bayview, it's something you should try at least once.

The best thing about this place is their atmosphere. It is right next to Milwaukee river, so you can enjoy nature while sipping on beers. They also have boat dock, which is a popular option during summer. The atmosphere is just amazing. But unfortunately the food is just OK, nothing special. Their fish basket is around $9 with one fish (you can choose between grouper or catfish on weekdays and cod during Friday). You also get French fries, a bit soggy, a cup of coleslaw, and one rye bread. The burger is good with big juicy patty. You have to pay extra for lettuce, cheese and tomato. It also comes with the slightly soggy fries. They always have $5/2 tall PBR. The food are slightly underwhelming food but you come here to buy and enjoy the atmosphere. The atmosphere is a good perk for sure.

Really cool atmosphere and patio along with docks and extremely clean. Tasty peeled shrimp, wasters, really good coleslaw and fries. Fun place to hang out and have a beer. Right along the water

Although I Hate to use a cliche, This IS..basically "a hidden G--" on the other side of Skipper bud's boat storage. Just look for the second building where all the other cars are parked in the lot. I will refrain from corny pirate talk, hidden booty, nauti talk about knots and treasures. The back bar deck is covered with only one choice of tequila, Jose curve. Now they have plenty of rum, whiskey and vodka. To chase the chills away. Bar staff was attentive I had a jar of spotted cow to start $4.00, then a bottle of lite $ 3.00. The temp out side was 60 with winds from the north 10-20 mph. I thought I'd enjoy some of the last few warmer days outside. Bartenders were friendly. Customers were nice as well. Good mix of students and old/retired. It was nice to walk along the water. It really looks like a slice of Florida, without the palm trees, dolphins, heat, pelicans and cranes. If anyone is interested there is a nice 39 foot Silverton available for $129K. They have a good reputation for Fish Friday and Oysters. I hope to return before winter. Aye aye.

The epitome of a hidden gem. I never would have known about this place if it werent for word of mouth. And the place is literally hidden... a little hard to find. But once you're there, it's a great little spot to relax along the river on a nice summer day. You almost feel like you're down south in Louisiana or something for how different the environment is and how secluded it is from the rest of Milwaukee. Food is good, drinks are good, service is good.

Sit outside. The wait is never as long as they say. Get a cold beer and enjoy summertime.

Fish Fry Review: 4 different choices - smelt, grouper, catfish, and cod from $8.95 to $9.95. Dinner includes, cup of clam chowder, fries (or potato pancakes), coleslaw, and fish. Our group went with the grouper and cod. Next to the Comet Cafe the best fries for a fish fry. The coleslaw wasn't too creamy and seasoned well. The fish was just as good as last time. But if I got the cod it wouldn't have been enough to fill me up. Good thing I had the grouper.

I love afternoons at Barnacle Bud's. I have fun every time. I have yet to enjoy eating at Barnacle Bud's. For me, Barnacle Bud's is for drinking and social time. Read: Buds & Suds. My parents keep their boat at the adjoined Skipper Bud's, so I've had more than a few chances to experience the sunshine, smiles, and silliness simmering on the docks. The fun usually seduces me into having an extra margarita, or Coronita, or whatever my picnic table is ordering. I'm getting relaxed just thinking about lounging in the shade, laughing too loudly, Instagraming, and people watching in the back. The back is the bomb. Sure, there isn't a bad seat in the house (if you are outside). But when I have a few drinks in the back, I feel like I'm hanging in the cool kid clubhouse. Make sure to watch your toes when you're finished, however. The stumbley walk on the dock is peppered with metal boat tie things, don't get your flip-flop caught under one and tumble into the water. Never seen it. Want to. But I don't want to see it happen to you. The jovial white bearded proprietor is quick-witted, even when it seems his faculties should be encumbered. He's tan on the first day of the season and he's never shy. The clientele is typically diverse in age range and happy to be there. Enjoy flip-flops, hawaiian shirts, sunglasses, pink shoulders, gentle breezes, and some chances to meet new friends who own boats. Moreover, Bob Uecker's boat is often docked in the back. I told you it was the cool kid area.

OK. The patio is absolutely awesome and makes me feel like I am in Key West (although I have never been). The food we had was absolutely awful, however. Best crabcakes in Milwaukee? Worst crab cakes I have ever had anywhere. At one point I thought I may need to throw up they were so bad. 75% filler and the filler was somehow greasy. Oh my God. It makes me gag just to think about them! The ranch fries were the cheapest frozen french fries you could buy and I dared not try the ranch dressing that came with them because I already had my fill of grease from the crab cakes. The salad was iceberg with some cucumbers, tomatoes, and white onions. It did have some sliced avocado as well which I thought was nice, but it just didn't really go well with the iceberg lettuce. The service was good. No complaints, but we couldn't find the maitre de to reserve a table because she was wandering all over the deck. I just don't understand why she just didn't stay put near the entrance. That being said the manager say us wandering around looking lost and took our name and said she would put us on the list. The wait was shorter than she indicated and gave us time to have a drink and enjoy watching the boats and people. One reviewer who felt the same way about the crab cakes said the lobster rolls were good, so maybe we'll try those next time. Or maybe we'll just drink. I will be much more particular about what I eat here, that is for sure!

I just love this place - it makes me feel like I'm at a little fisherman's shack off the gulf of Florida rather than on a canal in milwaukee. That is the kind of atmosphere you can find here. You can enjoy your cigar in the "Bud's Behind" area while sipping a cool drink out of your mason jar. The crab cake was huge and better than average (I would order again) and the prices are very reasonable. Come here to get away and relax - don't expect downtown speed. A must experience for your milwaukee bucket list.

A friend recently clued me in on Bud's existence and I couldn't believe that in all my trips to this cool little corner of Milwaukee I had never come across this little slice of South Florida paradise! The first time you head down the little access road over the railroad tracks and between the industrial waterfront buildings you start to wonder if it's all some cruel joke, but once you make that final turn you're greeted by the most disorganized parking situation in town...and that just adds to the fun. Even though it was threatening rain on our first Saturday afternoon visit, the place was a rockin' with two large decks offering lots of outdoor and covered seating. Inside a rustic little nautical hideaway awaits and took me back to the side streets off Duval in Key West. With the coming rain we opted for the covered (but open on three sides) deck and were promptly served a couple ice-cold beers in Mason jars. Nice touch. The tattered and grease-stained food menus were also fitting and full of simple, but tempting seafood selections. There were some standard 'landlubber' options too, but why would I even bother when I'm on the water and dreaming of the possibility of an impromptu calypso performance at any moment??? We opted for the tuna steak sandwich and the fried shrimp po boy which both arrived quickly. My wife's shrimp po boy basket was adorned with onions, lettuce, hot gardiniera, pickles and a spicy mayo sauce with fries on the side. She's not a fan of gardiniera, but I thought that was an awesome addition to an otherwise simple sandwich. My tuna steak was the real deal with perfect cross-hatch grill marks and cooked to a perfect rare. Served on a wonderfully fresh egg-washed brioche-type bun. No toppings other than my pickle garnish, but all I wanted to taste was the tuna and it certainly satisfied. Fresh with a great meaty flavor and not fishy at all despite having a deep-red center. Delish! I opted for cole slaw on the side and it was a nice simple (not overdone with mayo, thank goodness!) homemade-tasting variety. Prices were extremely reasonable in that my tuna steak sandwich was like $7.95 and the po boy was about the same price. A steal that would have cost nearly double at home in Chicago! We stuck around for another beer and watched happy boaters come and go after a quick libation. Pontoons filled with partiers floated by and waved to us as we waved back. Just a great vibe and DEFINITELY a place we'll return when the sun is out and maybe when they have some live music. That might move this happy little shanty up to perfection!

Amending my review. Went to the bar in back for a friends birthday party. Ordered a fish basket. Holy cow was it good. And I'm not a huge fan of the fried variety of food... I think a lot of the "vibe" here depends on when you are there, and who you are with. Shame our food experiences were so inconsistent. I hear they still serve the oysters on the half-shell with no ice. We'll come back. Who's birthday is next?

Le Sigh.... was greeted by a super drunk chick smoking a cigarette drinking a PBR tall boy. Walked in and everyone stared at us. Asked if they were still serving food, no response. Went outside and asked the outside bartender. He said NO. It's 6:30!!??? Seriously. I used to love you barnacle buds. .. What happened to your service? ??

You need to take your friends here. They will think you're taking them into a back alley so you can kill them. This restaurant/bar is tucked into a strange industrial corridor on the nasty portion of the Milwaukee River. Here are some directions: Leave Bay View's bustling KK, cross the un-gated railroad tracks, turn after the giant concrete cylinders, park next to a big metal warehouse, blow out your flip-flop stepping on a poptop/who-knows-what, creep through a chain-link fence, and BOOM! You're in beach bum paradise! The place is decorated like a castaway's shack. The 2 outdoor patios are vacation-esque, with an outdoor bar, wooden picnic tables, decor that looks like it was found with a beach metal detector and sunshine/glorious sunshine. (I only go here when the sun is shining). The food is mostly seafood, but there are burgers, brats and a few other non-fish items to order. Honestly, the food is not amazing. It's good, don't get me wrong, but you don't come here for the food. You come here to drink and feel like you're in Key West. They have a Bloody Mary bar on weekends, fresh oysters on occasion, and some sort of summery beer on tap most of the time. So put on your Tommy Bahamas and saunter through Creepsville to Milwaukee's hidden beach party.

When we first came to Milwaukee, I was exploring on my bicycle, and came across this odd location in what would seem to be the very last place in the area one would encounter a restaurant. Approaching from land, you might think there is just no way there's an eatery hidden in among warehouses in this otherwise industrial area. However, many of their customers come by boat from the lake, which is really the most interesting thing about this place, it's right on the water, with a set of docks on their pier so you can literally sail right in. It's right off a bike trail so it's convenient to bicycle in as well. It's a regular stop for us once it gets warm enough, I don't think I would ever eat in the small inside part, but then again, I'm not sure why not. It is really fun to come here on a warm spring, summer or early autumn day, I like their lobster or grouper sandwiches, and they usually have a tasty soup of the day. They have a choice of four fishes for Fish Fry Fridays. The menu is limited but amusing. The food isn't spectacular, it's just fine to go along with the fun location. Wear sun-block.

Where else can you sail down a river, pull up to a dock, park your sailboat, and enjoy a two for $5 deal on Schlitz tallboys. Burgers are great and the spicy schrimp pasta were very good. My friend ordered a rather endowed hotdog called the " the home wrecker." I love it. Everything was tasty and the deal was sealed after I saw the message written in the mens bathroom. "Remember, there's no ugly women after 2:00 AM"

I remember coming here when I was little. The food is still great. I love the burgers and the wife loves the salmon. The Milwaukee river isn't much to look at but the fact that the place is so tucked away is cool. Great staff as well.

NOT KID FRIENDLY! If you just read that and thought okay good, there are no kids, then keep reading, the service is all around bad. Although I've lived in Bay View for almost 6 years, this was my first time at Barnacle Bud's. I soon as we found the place and starting walking in I knew I was hooked - I am all about the ambiance of a place and it was perfect - I wouldn't have even cared what the food was like really. Well unfortunately after my lunch today I won't be going back. I'd like to think I am a friendly person, I am always very nice to wait staff. Anyway, the first thing we asked for was a high chair for my 1 year old daughter. The waitress responded no & pretty rudely at that. We went with it and got her stroller from the car for her to sit in. As we were ordering from a different waitress, I looked for something for my daughter. I saw a note on the menu saying "Kids menu on next page" - though I couldn't find it. I asked the waitress about it and she said "Oh yeah, that's a joke" HAHA, wow what a good joke! It is hilarious to be rude to people with kids and basically discriminate against a group of people! Meanwhile, while we ate our food, two people sat down in the table next to us, they'd been sitting there for about 15 minutes when they tried waving down the waitress, was ignored and then had to shout to get her to come over. She never apologized for the wait. I overheard her say things like "if I have time" etc. very rudely to them. Not doing it justice here. While we waited for our food, my daughter and I walked to the piers, and on the way was smiling and pointing at the other customers. Lots of cute comments, she charmed them all like she usually does. Really seemed like the customers hated kids there! My mom was in town for a week to spend time with me, thanks Barnacle Bud's for creating such a fantastically crappy time for us right before she flew home today. I'm very sad, I would have told everyone I know about this place, brought lots of neighbors and friends here etc. Their service ruined it and considering two waitresses were this way I think it's coming from the top. Don't give them your business.

A tale of summer drinking does ensue. Of beers and booze and whacky river suds; The sun, the heat, the merry pranksters, true, I give thee hence my view o' Barnacle Bud's! The day began upon the jaunty boat, Where Yelpers near and far amassed in dress. We docked, but I had yet to quench my throat. The river front I chose to make recess. But rest found not my mind or briny blood, For beers and sun doth take their mighty toll. I drank my weight of ale as from a flood, And therein lost all sense of self control. So heed my tale of tasty summer treats, But careful, now, to stay upon one's feets!

Awesome atmosphere for a beer in the summer in Brewtown. Awesome location. Prices are average. Service is pretty good, at times attitude-ish, but adequate. I wish I had a boat but it's fun to enjoy the atmosphere. I have yet to get food here. Will review that later this year

Well, well, well, Barnacle Buds, you are reviewed at last. I am a really big fan of Barnacle Buds, why? Is it the atmsophere? Yes. Is it the Food? Yes. Is it the beer? Eh, pretty average selection for Milwaukee, so Yes. This place has got. it. all. And, it is friendly, and doesn't feel like you are in the city, definitely reminds me of home. Congrats to you Barnacle Buds, you were selected as review #100 for the Bronze Fonz, feel special. Because you are :)

Having lived in Brooklyn for almost a decade, I am not whatsoever impressed with hidden word-of-mouth venues that only the cool-kids twerp about, or whatever. I'm all about judging a place on its merits. And this place is an overpriced, overblown craphole. I'm not sure what was the worst thing about this place. The ounce of blue overpriced vodka punch in a plastic cup full of ice? Maybe the impolite hostesses? Or how they told my daughter to go lock her bike to a distant fence well out of our sight? Perhaps the ubiquitous styrofoam and plastic servingware? The repulsive grouper fish fry? Wait, I know what the worst part of this place was! It was the waitress who shouted at the couple at the neighboring table. In front of the entire patio of customers. That young couple dared to go order a beer at the bar after being ignored for 20 minutes. How dare they go tip the attentive bartender instead of their sociopath waitress! Don't let the cachet of the hidden riverside location blind you to the fact this place is a hellhole of entitlement and poor value. Lucky for us all, it's hidden away so no one runs the risk going there out of convenience.

It was more fun getting there than it was actually eating there. Lemme tell ya... First of all, mind the railroad crossing at the last intersection before the gangway that leads to Barnacle Bud's. There are no warning lights or guardrails to warn you so just be careful! After that, you're on your own. Parking is a mess, I ended up parking on the grass to avoid inadvertently blocking anyone in. At the behest of my better judgement, I parked right in front of a sign that warned of possible towing. I crossed my fingers and held my breath. After reading reviews, I thought, "What a fun way to end a day trip with some out-out-towners." I wasn't so on point with my assumption. I was actually looking forward to going to St. Paul Fish and having their Shrimp Po' Boy, but came here instead, And I know, you don't go here for the food, supposedly, but the food I had wasn't so bad! I got the Smelt Dinner. Light batter, fresh fish, the smelt were pretty good. But the fries, meh. Even throwing some ranch powder on, they were good, but still meh. My sister-in-law and her friend split the Po' Boy, and my wife and mother-in-law split the shrimp basket. Imagine the fried shrimp from Sizzler or Ponderosa and throw 3 of them in a bun, and you have the Shrimp Po' Boy, and these were the same shrimp in the basket. So yeah, satisfied-ish with the food, what was my problem with dining here? The feeling that my companions felt upon walking through the dining areas, to the restrooms, and to our table, they got the vibe that we had come across something maybe we weren't supposed to. You know, the "unwelcomes". Usually happens when people stare at you with unbreaking gaze. I didn't feel it as much, but my wife's gut is usually right. One issue, we were seated at a table in the rear outdoor area. A couple were standing and drinking at our table, but didn't budge when they saw us. I could have asked them to move. I didn't, because, I just think if it was me, I would have moved away from the table as soon as someone sat somebody there. I dunno. Don't get me wrong, It wasn't the whole room, but it was enough to be palpable. Part of it may have had to do with the fact that we were possibly the only sober ones there, but we were not about to play a game of catch up. I'm not sure that was the only reason for the awkward staring from some of the other customers. At least he staff was friendly. I don't know that I'll return. The food wasn't enough to overcome the atmosphere. Maybe I wasn't drunk enough to eat here. Or maybe it was something else.

If you are looking for a hidden gem, a getaway from the city, then you need to visit Barnacle Bud's. How did I never know about this unique and interesting place?!?! We visited on Friday night and after driving to get there, sure we were going to be lost when driving through warehouses and such, there it was, right there on the river. You walk up and it just seems like a sea of people and the hostess greets you and takes your name. She tells you to go get a drink and wait for your name to be called. What amazed me about this is you can go inside, outside, around the corner, down the dock, etc and she will find you. We made our way to the back bar and grabbed a drink and sat on a wooden bench on the dock. Ahhhh, the worries of the day did not exist anymore. So relaxing, so wonderful and you can pretend you are in another place or on vacation. We watched people pull up in their boast and park them, that was quite a sight too. In what seemed to be no time at all, the hostess found us and got us a table. Everyone there was so friendly and funny, what a great group of people. I think it's because it's an environment that feels like you are on vacation so how can you be anything but happy there. We ordered some food, I had a grilled chicken sandwich and my husband had a grilled Mahi sandwich, both were very good. You have to give it a try. I really like this place and now that I know where to find it, plan on returning again and again. A little piece of paradise in our own backyard.

Barnacle Bud's rocks my world. If you can find it, you win, and you can truly call yourself a hip Milwaukeean. Is the food amazing? No, but it's fried, and isn't that pretty close? Can you get a bucket of cute little Coronitas for a reasonable price? Of course you can! Can you drink it whilst gazing at a river, watching boats go by featuring passengers in various stages of drunken debauchery? Yes. Can you do it all while surrounded by true characters of the magnificent city known as Milwaukee? Indeed you can. Whatcha waiting for? Barnacle Bud's is an excellent place to relax. Especially if you've had a crummy day at work and now the sun is shining and you just need to spend a bit of time outside soaking up some Vitamin D (and alcohol and greasy food).

I'm thinking about summer as the snow falls outside and wanted to add some details for all of you boaters. If you are planning to boat in, I can report that the river is well dredged to 10 feet all of the way to Bud's, along the river. We sailed in from Chicago to get some beers and oysters. The food was as great as ever, after finding a "parking spot." I hope to be back when the ice melts.

This place is enchanting. The atmosphere is incredibly fun and very unique for Milwaukee. This place has a rep for being great atmosphere/okay food... but I have to disagree with that opinion. Maybe we just ordered the right thing, but the crab cake sandwich was excellent. I would go so far as to say this is my new favorite crab cake in Milwaukee. It was big, full of flavor, and had a really great remoulade/sauce with a little kick to it served on the side. A friend recommended the wings so we had that as an appetizer. They were BBQ flavored, not buffalo, but perfectly cooked and very tasty. Service was good considering how packed it was. I wish I would've discovered this place sooner this summer.

Barnacle Buds is one if those places you leave and say "why don't we go here more often?" Since it's tucked away behind some warehouses it can be an easy place to forget and that would be a shame. BB's was fully packed last night with a mix of boaters, hipsters, bikers and a lot of older people who really like Jimmy Buffet. We didn't come for food, so I can't comment on that but there were a lot of people chowing down. Atmosphere is going to depend entirely on when you come. If it's crappy or cold out, you'll be in the tiny shanty like building and that's not a bad thing. If it's nice, you'll probably be on the killer wrap around patio enjoying some sun and drinks. If you don't have the money or time for a trip to Florida, you can spend about $3 on gas to come here, have a Red Stripe and feel like you're out on Key West. A Milwaukee treasure! EDIT: I've had the chance to eat here and....yeah....just don't do it. Not good. At all. But for drinks, it's the greatest. (Seriously, how can a Milwaukee place make a brat that is inedible? Barnacle Bud's apparently has that skill set)

Oh man, Barnacle Buds. Probably my favorite summer hangout when I'm in need of a bloody mary, good food, or just some great tropical vibes. Good luck finding it if you've never been there before, but once you get there you'll instantly feel like you've been picked up and dropped off at a different latitude. (Well, besides the industrial buildings all around - but you can just pretend they aren't there) Sundays include a bloody mary bar and music by Jimmy T. He busts out the tambourines, maracas, and washboards for everyone to play...and if you're lucky you'll be there on a day when people get up and start dancing on the big round table in the middle. :P Food is good, crabcakes are fantastic, tropical drinks (dumpster punch) are delicious. I definitely recommend you try it.. like, now! :)

We love an afternoon at Barnacle Buds...great destination for a Harley ride in the summer. Was 5 stars until the price of the Corona buckets went up $2 last year. Great place to hang out and get some sun.

I've been to Barnacle Bud's before, but I went again for Mother's Day this year with my mom and little brother. It was their first time. They absolutely loved it and I did as well, as usual. We went for lunch and had no problem getting a table straight away. I love going to restaurants where I can sit outdoors and I knew my mom would love it, hence choosing this place for Mother's Day. We also have a love of bloody mary's and thoroughly enjoyed the bloody mary bar. There are tons of garnishments and seasonings to choose from, so you can make your perfect bloody mary. I started with half a dozen oysters and dang were they good!! It was my first time having oysters here and I will definitely be back for more. My mom started with a crab cake. I forgot how big those things are!! We all nibbled on that while we waited for our meals. Overall, we had a great time. They got to enjoy a great little slice of Milwaukee sitting by the water (they don't live here, but drove down to spend the day with me). The laid back atmosphere and music were great. It was just a great relaxing way to kick off the day.

Very quirky place with a beautiful view. I thought the best item on there menu were the crab cakes. Not a fan of there margaritas. Be cafefull if you go there on a windy day you might have to smell from Jones island.

Yarrrr!!!!! Go get your Pirate on. If you own a boat, you probably know about this place. If you don't, you should probably get one, or get a friend with a boat so you don't have to deal with all the crap that goes along with owning one. Barnacle Bud's is all atmosphere and little else. Still, it deserves every bit of it's four stars, it's that awesome. They could serve me raw alewives and warm Bud Lite Lime, and I wouldn't care. Just get me a table on the patio on a gorgeous evening (like last night) with a view of the setting sun, and little else matters. Your first time here will be an eyeopener. Be prepared to listen to a lot of Jimmy Buffet. First, you might need a tour guide to find the place. It's well hidden from KK Ave, but easily accessible by water. Once you get there, you will lose all bearing of where you are. Yes, you can see the Hoan, Allen Bradley, and the downtown skyline, but you still might not believe you are in Milwaukee. Lastly, you will discover where all the boaters hang out. I've never seen more tanned, flip-flop wearing middle aged drunk Milwaukeeans parting it up than here at Bud's. A subtle note about the crowd. The people at McKinley or South Shore marinas are " yachty a-hole" types. Here, they are "boaters." Don't get me wrong, all are welcomed, not just the maritime Milwaukeeans. Notice that I haven't mentioned the food? I didn't want to distract from the awesomeness of the setting. Barnacle Bud's has a full bar food menu with an emphasis on seafood items (far more Grouper than I would expect). I had the Italian sausage patty burger and it was pretty good. My wife had a brat and it was pretty awful. The SIL had a burger and it was just OK. We also tried the wings. They were baked, not fried, but unremarkable non the less. BB's is well known for their Bloody Mary's, but the real attraction is the deck. I would never come here on a crappy day, but when the weather is perfect, you will know where to find me.

Is the food amazing? No, not really. But that's NOT why you come here. Go here to sit outside, listen to and dance with Little Jimmy, watch people get drunk and silly, get drunk and silly yourself, and forget you are in the middle of the city and totally stressed out. It's kind of like a vacation... kind of. :)

Barnacle Bud's was quite pleasant. I had heard about the place and was really excited to try it out! It's a little out of the way and was a little adventure to find it. What a gem it was! Sitting by the river is always a plus but the service was friendly and the drinks were tropical and fun. I ate the crab cakes which were quite good. I had the grouper basket which was a run of the mill fish basket but good enough to match most others. The prices were reasonable and the atmosphere perfect. I'll be back and bringing new customers.

OMG this patio rocks!!! You feel like you're in FLA on vacation. Way hidden (some say its secret!) place but once you find it, you'll be back. Great burgers and pub food. Silly owner Gene. Good place to drink. Worth it to dock at if you're a boat person. Watch the boats come in/out of Skipper Buds as you hang. One of my favorite chillaxing places in the summertime.

Getting here is interesting. It I did not have GPS, I don't think I would have found it. It is probably the most isolated restaurant I have been to in Milwaukee. They are doing something right, as they are celebrating their 20th year in business. There are great views of the downtown here, from the outside tables. A great place to hang out in the middle of industrial south side. It is sandwiched between Skipper Bud's marina and the river, with a huge outdoor deck, lots of outside seating and a somewhat cramped, low-ceiling inside room. Coming here, you can be transposed to somewhere far south. Margaritaville. Don't come here looking for healthy food. We ordered a crab cake sandwich, which according to our server is the most popular menu item. It had much, much more filler than I am used to, with finely ground crab. The taste was actually pretty good, but the bun had been toasted in butter, and the crab cake tasted deep fat fried. The French fries were standard thawed, not fresh cut, not bad, but not memorable either. The coleslaw was fresh, mayo-based. The really winner was the "Lobster Po' Boy" sandwich. This was reasonable, what most places refer to as a lobster roll, with generous amounts of lightly breaded and fried lobster. There was minimal sauce, a few garnishes, delicious, a bargain. A very highly rated seafood restaurant here in town cannot compete with this lobster roll. I did ask if the seafood (catfish, grouper) could be ordered grilled, to try to limit the fat. I was told the grouper could be ordered grilled. We definitely will return, with me trying the grilled grouper next visit. Great service, interesting setting.

I've only been to Buds one time, meeting some people sailing and I was excited to experience the nice ambiance. One would think you're in the Keys. A small band was playing that Sunday early afternoon and everyone was having a great time. Not having ordered anything from this place before I opted for the Lobster Roll. At $9.95 I thought, "What a deal." When it came, at first glance it looked heaped with lobster meat, but at a closer look and after tasting, I knew it was either all Pollock(fake crab/lobster) or a blend of the fake and very very little real lobster. Unless there was a tiny bit of real lobster meat in this sandwich, I knew by the taste and texture it was the fake processed crab pr Pollock fish. Most grocers and restaurants are now calling this stuff either seafood or imitation crab. It has the color of crab (red and white) and is actually processed crab from everything in the crab or fish one would not really want to eat. It is then extruded into whatever shape is needed for the market. Come on Bud; if it's fake, label it correctly. Don't sell a wonderfully looking lobster roll and use NO lobster.

Summer time Must DO!!! Let me be clear, this is a place everyone must check out, but then again, I hate that everyone comes here! It's such a special little hidden gem that we all secretly want to keep to ourselves, am I right?!?! If it's summer in Milwaukee, and you haven't been to Bud's, you aren't doing it right! Oh, and I should probably mention, I most always only drink here. That's all I need;)

My friends took me here on a beautiful Saturday in the summer for lunch when I came up to visit from Chicago. There is one word that can describe this place -- CHARMING. It reminded me very much of my hometown (Panama City, FL). The location is off the beaten path behind a boat storage facility. There was plenty of outdoor seating. Therefore, we were able to watch boats being lowered into the river and people pulling their boats into the dock for a bite to eat. I ordered the Reuben which was excellent. I loved that they served the Thousand Island dressing on the side instead of slopping it all over the place. My fiance had the Big Bud Burger which he said was well-cooked (medium) and delicious with the cheese and fried onions. The fries were heavily seasoned which was okay. The lemonade was extremely tasty, too. Charming hidden hideaway in Milwaukee!

This place was awesome. We went there for lunch today. The atmosphere and band combined with the hot August weather had me feeling like I was down in Ft. Walton beach which was pretty great. They have their wings down pat. Fried, tossed and then grilled. The only downside was they only have one wing sauce, spicy bbq, but it was fantastic so I really can't complain. The perch fish fry was great, too. I'll be telling everybody about this place. Also, It's open year round according to the signs.

Great people and boat watching here, no doubt. Great place to grab a drink or 10. Food? Ehhh...not so great. Everything was coated with rosemary that our table received--- even the chicken wings? WTH? Just odd. I got the baked grouper but it was covered with Rosemary so I couldn't eat it. However, service was great and the location is a gem.

I will start by saying that the atmosphere created by this little place is great. I visited for the first time by car (I had been here by boat) this last Friday and was surprised by how hidden it was. It was not too busy, and we all sat down right away outside on a bench. The good: Our server was prompt and friendly. The drinks we ordered were all very good as well. Make sure to try the dumpster punch and the Brown Ale made by Sprecher. The punch has an awful color, but tastes really good. The crab cake appetizer was large enough to share, and it had a good fresh flavor. It also came with a really good dipping sauce and some great coleslaw. The bad: The rest of our experience was disappointing. We went here in hopes of trying a good new fish fry, and I don't think we will be going back. First off, we ordered the ranch fries, expecting something different than the standard fries on the menu. Not the case. Ranch fries are actually regular fries with a side of ranch. LAME! Now on to the fish fry. I was glad to see grouper on the menu, as it is quickly becoming my new favorite fish. My wife and I each ordered the grouper fry, and in rare form, barely touched our meals once they came out. The fish seemed rushed out of the fryer, and was very soggy. It seemed like the coating would be good crispy, but what we received was far from it. Mine looked like it was thrown together, and the fish was folded onto itself, which added to the sogginess. When our server came to the table to see how our meals were, we both regrettably did not complain at all, as we did embarrass the others at our table. She asked if we wanted a box, and she seemed almost surprised that we didn't want to take any home. I wish she would have pried a bit more when we didn't want to bring any home, but she did not. I will instead use Yelp to at least let it be known. All in all, I think this place would be decent to go to with people for appetizers, especially if you are on the river. Definitely a good place for drinks. Maybe it was just an off day, but the fish fry was not very good. Before leaving to go to this restaurant, my friends were in a heated debate over which fish fry to have. I won the argument, and really took some grief after the meal. With so many good fish frys in this town, I would suggest looking to places other than Barnacle Buds.

Barnacle Bud's is a place you go to for the atmosphere and to enjoy the great outdoor dining (although I'm sure it's not too bad to weather the winter either). I hit there on one of the first really nice days of the "summer". There was a wait to sit outside so we took seats at the oyster bar to kill time. Cold Beer and fresh 1.50 oysters what more could you ask for. The oysters are shucked in front of you and were very tasty. The beer is your standard Milwaukee selection with Shlitz tall boys and a good selection of local drafts. When we got a table i got the grouper fish fry. The fish was good not outstanding but solid nonetheless. The chowder was buttery and creamy and different from the typical New England you are use to at most restaurants. I enjoyed the soup and it's large chunks of clam in it. Overall I would give the food a 3 stars not crazy good, but quality, and I would give the atmosphere of Barnacle Buds a 5 thus the 4 stars overall. This is definitely a great place to hit and drink the day away and watch the boats sail down the river. I will be returning to Buds to enjoy the delicious oysters and good brews on a hot sconi summer day!

The food was above average. We had the cod and grouper basket on Friday 4-26-2013. Food amount was plenty for the price. The only reason for the lack of 5 stars is the ex-employee and management. How can they look down upon you for not tipping at least 20% tip???? The ex-employee demanded more tip and said "20% was better". I told the management and they pretty much did not care. She brushed it off and said he was ex-employee. Like that make me feel better. I tried to express my concern, but neither the waitress or the manager would care to listen as soon as I mentioned the tip I left. Their service should not depend on the tip nor it tipping a law. If you are not prepared to be expected to pay a 20% tip, be ready for a grumpy, negative response. PS: food was good. I will go again and still leave a tip appropriate to my experience.

Bloody Mary :: Soooo, I like to think that I'm a well seasoned Bloody Mary connoisseur and I had even had the delectable drink at BB's before, but I ordered one from their build-your-own Bloody on Monday (Memorial Day) and I was blown away. What I received when I ordered the bloody: a mason jar full of ice, mini-bottle of vodka and a Chicken Wing garnish. Yes. Chicken wing. I was responsible for making the drink as tasty as I wanted (I succeeded), but the Chicken Wing garnish made my day. It was tasty and delicious and the perfect, unexpected sustenance I needed. I'm not sure if that was a special Memorial Day surprise, but either way, it made my always fun time at Barnacle Buds just that much better.

WOW....it feels wrong to leave, its that good!!!! Went here on a whim and it was spectacular!!! Having used to live in Florida for awhile, this is just how all the laid back restaurants were on the ocean/waterways. Eating inexpensive, tasty food in bare feet and listening to chilled out live music is perfect. Your own Bloody Mary bar is a must and the food....again, cheap and great. We will defiantly be headed back. Service was excellent and prompt...thanks Laura!!! LOVED IT!!!!

Food? It's just okay. That's all I'm going to say about it. How can a place with just okay food get 4 stars? Barnacle Bud's is the single greatest place in Milwaukee to drink beer on a summer evening. I've heard their patio described as North Carolina Outer Banks meets Key West and they are definitely not lying, but the fact that beyond the shadows stand the remnants of the old harbor factories gives Bud's a character distinctly Milwaukee.

So, how exactly do I admit that I grew up in Bay View, knew about Barnacle Bud's the entire time, but was a Barnacle Bud's virgin until this weekend. Went in with a friend that lives walking distance away and spends most summer days there. She admitted that she will often go at 2-3pm with the thought that she will be home by 5-6pm, and ends up closing the place down. After Saturday I can see why. It was a beautiful sunny day and the place was packed! We were able to secure a table. Since they don't serve any kind of cider (super sad face) I went with the Dumpster Punch. A mixture of Rum and many different juices. Pretty tasty...but, after 2 I realized I was probably getting much more juice than I was getting Rum. I got the wings and the ranch fries. Both were pretty good. I for see my self spending many more sunny summer days on the Barnacle Bud's patio.

Son of a barnacle! This is my kind of place. A literal hidden gem of a dive in Milwaukee ... the kind of dive where all beverages are served in mason jars. The deck is perched over the river where you have the chance to watch boaters float by. Definitely not the prettiest river to look at while eating, but it's a body of water, right? Every Sunday Barnacles has a Bloody Mary bar (of course served in mason jars). And their food is awesome. The breading on the fish is perfect and the portion sizes are pretty hefty considering the low price tag. They also serve lobster, crab and oysters. While the weather is still good make your way over to the "Double B". You will not be disappointed.

Four stars for atmosphere! This place is a hidden Milwaukee treasure where you can dock you boat and step onto their patio for some great seafood and stellar wings! Also the staff here is super friendly! It's one of the best summer hangouts you can go to!

My favorite 'summer getaway'. When you're sick of the usual dinner places, this is the perfect place to escape for the evening. Great drinks!!! My fav is the bucket of mini Coronitas. The food is decent. Not mind blowing, but I keep coming back for the drinks and amazing atmosphere. Service is hit or miss, but when you have a bucket of beers and you're right on the water, does it really matter?

Our friends took us here as a surprise Sunday Funday event. Being semi-new to Milwaukee we have never heard of it before. While we were on the drive there it looked like something straight out of the movie Hostel. I was actually considering GPSing where we were! Once we arrived we instantly knew that we were at a super cool place. It was super cheap and delicious food. My boyfriend and I SHARED a burger and fries. (He is a big guy with a big appetite and we were sufficiently full) They had two for five PBR tall boys and the waitress was very friendly. They also have a bloody mary bar which my boyfriend said was fantastic. Anything and everything that you would want to put in it, they had. It was right on the river and since boats could pull right up there wasn't any railings, so if you bring children you will need to keep a close eye on them. They also have a live singer, Jimmie, who was completely fantastic. He didn't just sit there and sing, he walked around. All in all, I will be definitely taking family and friends from home to this place. Worth it if you want some cheap lunch and a few beers, maybe a few laughs too. The decor was definitely perfect! Almost like you were in a southern state. Oh, one more thing, you will most likely be sitting outside. So dress appropriately for the wonderful and ever changing Wisco weather!

After being out on the water all day we make this a must stop. Excellent oysters and service. Love the atomsphere. Remains me of the Florida raw bars and enjoy the open outdoor setting. I can't wait for it to warm up and have my oysters soon. Great food.

OK did a fish fry, it was so-so- the batter was just basic,For the price they could do better, will go back for oysters but no more fish fry's.

Barnacle Bud's was the highlight of my Milwaukee trip and the perfect last supper! Based on rave reviews, I found my way to the Barnacle, and I must say that was probably the best decision I have ever made!! Barnacle Bud's is hidden at the end of Hilbert street amongst of sea of storage garages, but once you get there, a guided rope path paved with wooden planks leads you to outdoor seating area which is conveniently located next to the lake where a half a dozen boats were recharging. At sunset, you can catch a picturesque view of downtown. My fiance and I took a seat outside, we glanced over the menu and enjoyed the summer breeze. The only thing that could make this experience more memorable would be the food and I must say, it did not disappoint!!! We started off with the crab cakes, which definitely lived up to its name as being the the finest in town. For entres, I had the steamed mussels and my fiance had the grouper, lightly baked. I absolutely loved my mussels, they were to die for!!! If you are in Milwaukee, this is a MUST TRY!!!

It's that little oasis in the desert. A place you can go to get out of the city, in the city. Barnacle Bud's is located north of Becher street just before the entrance to Jones Island. Just keep going, I'm not sure you can get lost but if you do, you've found it. Plenty of outdoor seating next to the river, outdoor bar space with a view of the city surrounded by the tall grass of nature. The decor is kitchy and there are no real frills. The food is solid but fits with the atmosphere well. I'll go just often enough so I can enjoy how special it is.

Great atmosphere. I't not so much on the lake, but more on a channel. It's an INDUSTRIAL waterway so don't look for palm trees and grassy beaches. Still, I love to get near the water anytime and "Bud" has cleaned up the area with outdoor tables and a rustic collection of rope and stuff. Its' not the perfect Fish Fry in town but on my top 5 list. CALL IN WINTER. They are closed for the season now on March 10. I'm not sure when they open. I can't speak to the rest of their food as we only go for Fish Fry. Kind of small inside, but with the landscaped exterior seating, very nice.

Absolutely a fantastic and authentic location. Great vibe. The Reuben grouper sandwich was great. The wings average. The server was somewhat abrupt and rude. She spoiled the experience and lowered the score!

I wish I could of given it 5 stars... but me and the boyfriend were hurting after eating a Smelt dinner. His crab cake was delish though. If you have a boat, or you're looking for some Sunday Funday drinking I would totally check out this place. It is awesome how random and hidden it is. Glad we got the rec to check it out.

The food is so so, but what a great atmosphere! I couldnt believe this little hidden gem was in Milwaukee. I felt like I was somewhere on vacation! If you havent been here yet you should visit in the summer.

This past weekend some friends and I made our first trip of the summer to Barnacle Bud's . I had only been to Barnacle Bud's one other time in the past and I feel like it is a hidden treasure in Milwaukee. It is located south of the city, on the river, hidden amongst warehouses and boat storage facilities. Barnacle Buds reminds me of a tiki bar along the river. There is a front and back patio filled with picnic tables to sit out and enjoy the water and weather. Boaters are able to pull right up to the bar and dock their boats while they have fun. We drank buckets full of cute little Coronitas. I really enjoyed Barnacle Buds and hope to spend a few more evenings there this summer.

Gotta say, I love Barnacle Bud's on a weekend when the weather is warm. It's really so nice to sit outside with a glass of wine or beer on the river and watch the sun go down. I would absolutely recommend this place for Fish Fry and for seafood lovers in general. Like most Bay View joints, they have decent drink specials all the time (especially for Schlitz and PBR) and they also draw a wide crowd of clientele from all walks of life. The service is almost always excellent and down to earth. The only real downside of Barnacle Buds is that in the summertime it can get really busy so you might have to wait longer than you'd like. Really, I haven't had a bad time here ever and look forward to heading back soon.

First off, I was a little surprised when I got there and all they had were picnic tables outside. I am not an outside kind of eating person, but my husband is. So, I thought what the heck. We had a crab cake appetizer - great flavor not lots of crab though still tasty. My husband had the steak special - he said it was good for the price. I had the coconut shrimp basket. Mine was very good. I could've had a couple more shrimp in the basket but it really was a good deal for the money. I liked the fries and coleslaw too. The service was average.

This is one of those spots that you keep going back to, but aren't really sure why. While the food (other than the pig roast when they have it, which is excellent) is just ok, and the service is spotty, there aren't many other places like this in Milwaukee, where you can sit out by the river and watch boats, birds, and people and just enjoy the moment over a sandwich and a beer. Definitely one of a kind in the area (although this sort of joint is more common in the south.) PS: Not the best choice in cold weather, as the building seems quite drafty. Bring a parka.

Even as a lifelong Milwaukeean, I'm still discovering the apparent institutions of my town, which is always a treat. A friend knew of this place but had never been. Near KK and Becher, Barnacle's Buds has an unusual location past several blocks of industrial buildings down what seems like a driveway (don't mind the "Beware of Dog" signs). Once you walk down the short pier to the actual shack/patio, this place feels feels more Florida than Milwaukee. If it's Tuesday, Jimmi might be playing Dylan and Tom Petty tunes while locals sit chill on the sturdy picnic benches sipping Margaritas and rum-based drinks from what look like canning jars. There's a full menu, and the appetizers we tried were quite tasty. On a warm evening , overlooking a finger of the Milwaukee harbor, this is a great place to meet friends and enjoy an unusual but wonderful atmosphere.
