Another restaurant run by one of Milwaukee's remarkable number of Sicilian families who have established and run restaurants here for generations, in this case for over 50 years! Now turned over to a long-term employee, Mark Dempsey, the tradition of the classic thin crust pizza continues in good hands. Not a crispy crust, but a solid thin one, with light tomato sauce and a generous amount of cheese, the popular spot often requires a wait, especially on weekends. The little dabs of sausage on ours were quite small. The overall flavor impact was rather mild, hardly intense. The side order of Antipasto supplemented the flavors nicely, as did the interesting, dense slab of garlic bread. Barbiere's (Bar-bee-air-ees) is a Milwaukee tradition and stands in the top ten of Milwaukee area pizza joints. Prices are on the more reasonable side for Milwaukee and there's another outlet in South Milwaukee if you live in that area.

With the opening of all the new restaurants in Milwaukee, sometimes you forget to go back to the good old standbys. The catalyst for us to do so is a good blizzard. For some reason, Barbiere's has become the respite from the snow and cold. Maybe because it just has a good comfortable feel, and it truly is comfort food. I love when you go to a restaurant and ask your server how long they've worked there and they go waaaay back. Last night our waitress said she's been working at Barbiere's since 1998. That tells me something. She's happy. The owners are happy. The customers are happy. And I'm happy. Especially when I order "The Snack". "The Snack" consists of a bowl of meat sauce with two meatballs, a big chunk of butter soaked garlic bread - and I mean a big and buttery - and a side salad, which I always upgrade to the antipasto which is nice and tangy. Considering it is called a snack, I still took one meatball home (and I am not talking about my husband). I always wash the snack down with the only wine that fits the atmosphere - Lambrusco. Don't come for here for the trendy scene, the small plates and the place to be seen...come here to put on a bib , have butter drip down your elbows, and enjoy the charm of a family owned pizzeria.

Not sure what took me so long, but BARBIERE'S I LOVE YOU. Been going here for years and is a family tradition. Whether getting some sweats on and grabbing a pie or getting dressed up with the extended family, this place is perfect. Garlic bread is to die for. Completely dressed in butter and garlic, it's a heart-clogging party in your mouth. The pizza is extra cheesy with a one of a kind texture/thickness. If there was a way for thin crust pizza to be deep dish, this is pretty much it with how much cheese there is. I always throw on some of the table-side Parmesan and red pepper flakes. Solid house wines and an atmosphere that is hard to match. Highly suggest this place for a date. Someday if you feel like delivering to my new home in Green Bay, I'll find a way to give you a sixth star. GO HERE PEOPLE

Went here on Tuesday around 6:00. We had been given a gift card, and hadn't checked this close-to-home place out yet. We were seated right away in the small and quaint dining room. We walked by the one server, who was wearing a collar? Surprised that was allowed in dress code... The manager served us, and we ordered a bottle of the Cab. It was good for around twenty bucks. I noticed one raging consistency between all the food at Barbiere's: SALT SALT SALT. I started with the Minnestrone, and it was a salt lick. Lots of beans and veggies and it was tasty...but my water was gone after a little cup. I wanted the ravioli, and there was a choice between 5 cheese or beef. I chose a meat sauce over it. My guest got the 5 cheese with mushroom sauce, and I got half and half. I thought that the beef was pretty smushy...and it was explained that the ravioli was the only thing that they didn't make in house. Made sense...it tasted frozen and thawed. To stay with tradition, the meat sauce was also a salt lick. The service was fine, and they had no trouble deducting the gift card. I may go back, but wouldn't rush this way as there are so many great places to check out in this area.

A LOT of people I know are really high on this place. I didn't think the food was anything better than average. It's a small place, very quaint. Classic casual Italian restaurant feel. The garlic bread is the best thing on the menu. It's very buttery and delicious. The pizza was nothing to write home about. With so many wonderful pizza options in the city, I wouldn't choose this place if I was in the mood for a good pie. The antipasto was okay. It's a fun little place if you want an old feeling small Italian experience. I wouldn't bring your kids. We did, but it's so small and quiet, it made us feel like every peep was disturbing everyone else. We won't be back unless our friends suggest it. They love it here

Barbiere's is my new neighborhood pizza joint. It has a cool little retro pick-up window at the front of the place, and it was very quick and efficient. Most importantly, the pizza was good. The crust is medium... not cracker-thin crust but certainly not pan or deep dish either. I can't complain, it was solid pizza and the price was really reasonable.

My wife's favorite restaurant and it rates high by me as well. My wife likes it so much that's where we had Mother's Day dinner from. Pizza: good cracker thin crust pizza - crunchy/flaky and tasy with excellent sauce, cheese and meat. Excellent pizza, one of the best in this area. Garlic Bread - OMG the absolute best soaked in butter then baked garlic bread that will harden your arteries. My kids fight over the middle pieces while I am more than content to eat the crusts. Antipasto Salad - good but not great. Restaurant is a cramped type of Italian eatery with quaint charm. Generally good consistent service both in restaurant and take-out.

I have been going to Barbiere's for pizza and garlic bread for 40+ years. Now I live in Arizona but anytime I return to Wauwatosa, I always find time for Barbiere's. They're a little pricey but worth it!

About six months ago, we ate dinner (for the second to last time) at Barbiere's. During this and previous visits, we were very unhappy with the dirty carpet in the entire dining area... food scraps, napkins, general table debris, all totally being ignored by both servers and the teenaged hostess. We had been, during earlier visits over the last two years, generally not so happy with the cavalier attitude of the young, teenaged and obviously inexperienced help in the dining area; hostess and servers alike. The next day, after that second to last visit, I actually called and spoke to a manager at the restaurant and told him about the condition of the dining room and the our perception of the help. He was apologetic, said he would take action and offered to comp us a meal. We declined the offer and haven't been back until last night, 8/25/2012 at about 8:00PM. What brought us back was a strong yen for pizza and the convenience of Barbiere's being close by, so we decided to give them another shot. The carpeting: A lot cleaner! We ordered a pizza, garlic toast and a glass of pinot noir. The garlic bread came quickly. It was (is) very good and unique, albeit very, very oily. Upon getting the glass of wine, I immediately saw that I would be in competition with several fruit flies that were now dive bombing the wine glass. Unfortunately, one took a successful Kamakazi dunk in the wine while I was swatting away. Hmmm. With my better half shaking her head in disgust, I started to fish the poor fly out of my wine with a spoon, intending to drink the wine (which is why I was getting the "you're disgusting" look). But then.... what's that? Ah heck. Inside the wineglass, I am now looking at a round wad of what looks like a splotch of thick, greasy dried fat, stuck to the inside of the glass. That did it for both of us. We showed the server, who was genuinely contrite. We asked to have the pizza packaged to go and asked for our check. The wine, obviously was taken off the bill, but she also took the garlic toast off, even though we had taken a slice out of it. Strike three. We're done at Barbiere's.

It's your typical 'Italian Pizzeria. The layout is a little weird at first, as you walk in to their 'pick up' area before making your way to the tables. The rooms is not very large, but may hold about fifty people or so. The walls are constructed to look like old world plaster with faux wood accents across the room. The wait staff was great. Our waitress charming and attentive. We ordered their long island ice teas; and holy shit they are strong... nearly straight up alcohol. Have one and you wont need another. We ordered their 'famous' butter garlic bread. and a pizza (obviously). The bread was good, dripping with melted butter, but it was a little salty which had us returning to our long islands frequently. The pizza was hand made, and you could clearly tell. Hand tossed, thin crust cooked to perfection. Open up, long strings of cheese will have you working that tongue a bit while you navigate the slice into your gullet. All in all, it was a decent restaurant.

An unabashed 5-star review... Call me a hopeless nostalgic. I don't know, but Barbiere's Italian Inn has been a favorite of mine for years. Decades even. And it seems to me that the older it gets--unchanged--the more I love it. Pete's Pizza that resided at 7434 W Capitol Drive for most of my entire life used to hold this place in my heart. Goodbye Pete's, Milwaukee's King of Pizza. I will remember you in my heart fondly forever. Barbiere's is not only a favorite of mine, but Marquette basketball coaching legend Al McGuire was a big fan of the place too. So much so that when a white-out blizzard rendered Milwaukee's streets untraversable, only four people were foolish and hungry enough to venture out for a bite at Barbiere's Italian Inn: me, my wife, Al McGuire's wife and Al McGuire. I'll never forget that night. Snow drifting up by the yard and us dining in nearly complete silence inside Barbiere's. I sensed another couple in the back corner of the restaurant, but paid no attention to who they were. After a shared pitcher of beer, I headed for the restroom and just before I reached the door, an unmistakable voice asked me "Hey, buddy. You got the time?" I turned, stood and looked. Gobsmacked. "Umm. Umm. Yeah sure, Coach McGuire. It's, umm, 8 o'clock, I think." Al must've thought to himself, "I ask the only guy in the place the time and he can't read a clock!" Of course, I could have equally questioned, "What the heck? Al McGuire doesn't own a watch?!" Nonetheless, my point is -- if Barbiere's food was desirable enough for me and the coach to venture out in inclement conditions to enjoy, it's good enough for you. Have the pizza, pasta or my wife's fave: "The Snack." You will leave Barbiere's full and satisfied. And maybe your waistline doesn't need it, but try their legendary garlic bread too. It's hearty, garlic-y, and soaked in butter. In other words: perfect. Lastly, Barbiere's won't break the bank. If two people can't stuff themselves silly on 20 bucks here, they may need a gastric band adjustment or something. Enjoy pizza. Enjoy simple. Enjoy permanence. Enjoy Barbiere's.

Ordered pizza and "the snack" for pick up. They do not accept payments over the phone due to safety issues, but when I handed them my card without a signature, they didn't even question me. It was not the cleanest place I have seen, crap all over the floor. There was a terrible odor, kinda like rotting urinal cakes and air freshener that made me feel ill. As far as the food, eh. The meatballs in the snack were super tiny. They could have passed for ground beef chunks floating in sauce. The garlic bread is the same as Mama Mia (same owners or something like that). The pizza had a thin crust. The toppings were standard. The sauce was bland. I do not see myself going back there ever again. Will stick with Balistreri's.

Met with the in-laws here for lunch, on the fly, and it was pleasant! The service was prompt and attentive (and very patient!). Our drinks were never empty for long (just sodas). We ordered pizzas, which were pretty good. I'm more of a pan/hand-tossed crust person, and these were a bit thin and crackery for my personal taste, but it was still a nice pizza. Lots of cheese! The atmosphere was a lot like Angelo's on Marquette's campus, which I used to love (alas, now gone). No clue on the pricing, since I didn't pay, but overall a nice experience.

Carryout: First time trying the Pizza here...when you first walk in the carryout is front and center a bit dark, & dated. It would be nice if the sign saying to ring bell were more noticeable...I stood there for a couple of minutes until I looked and saw the sign...Maybe you should invest in a bell that sounds when the door opens. We liked the sauce, crust, & toppings the only problem was it was a bit salty. The garlic bread was absolutely great. We also had a side Italian salad which was good but a little heavy on the vinaigrette. Although I am puzzled that the pizza was not sliced...so make sure you have a pizza cutter at home. Still on our search for great pizza in Milwaukee. Its not the worst and its not best.

NO RELATION TO JILLIAN BARBERIE. ORDERED: Garlic Bread (one piece) - $1.50, 12" Mushroom/Tomato Pizza - $15.00, Two Cheesecake "Bites" - $1.25 each TASTE: Our server delivered the garlic bread and said they gave my dining partner and I an extra slice. (Thanks!) The garlic bread has a shiny gloss appearance like an epoxy floor. It smells like a garlic factory exploded. It will go straight to your ass and thighs. These are all GOOD things, except maybe the last one. The pizza was the perfect size to split between two people. Barbiere's pizza has white flour cracker crust with rich tomato sauce. The sauce is hard to discern - it's not spicy or bold but at the same time it doesn't taste from a can. Fairly generous with the toppings with stringy melted mozzarella cheese top it off. Quality pizza for the price. The cheesecake bites were advertised on a table tent. This is usually a sign that the desserts are from a foodservice company and arrive at the restaurant frozen. I was correct as the small cupcake-like cheesecake was a few minutes plus degrees of frozen and had little flavor. I would pass on these and possibly try their tiramisu instead. SHAKY PARM: On the table. I shook it like a Polaroid picture all over my pizza. No Parmigiano-Reggiano here. CARRY-OUT: I've ordered a pizza via carry-out at Barbiere's and I can't get past how strange the "L" shaped blinder is on the right side of the carry-out window. I'm not sure if I should confess my sins or get out my debit card.

It may not be the best Italian food I've ever had, but it's definitely an experience. I love that my dad has been coming here since he was in high school. I HAVE to stop here if I'm anywhere in the area. Heck, I will even fly into Milwaukee instead of Green Bay so I can pick up a to go order on my way to GB. I am THAT dedicated to this place. I love the ambiance on the inside. Small, but not crowded. Looks like a place that has been around for a long time (in a good way). To start off, I'll usually split a giant salad with my dad - delicious! I've tried several different entrees on their menu, but my favorite is the cheese ravioli in the meat & mushroom sauce. Mmm. And then the garlic bread... OH, the garlic bread! My stomach is growling right now, just thinking about it. Too bad I'm 1,008 miles away at the moment...

I love coming here. It's a nice little hole in the wall. You will not leave hungry. First, start off with the garlic bread. Yes, it's dripping in butter, but the deliciousness of it will make you forget you are eating an entire day's worth of calories. The pizza is worth the wait. Thin crust, cheesy, delicious. The cheese ravioli is also wonderful - but you will wait for it. The wait is normally a long one - no reservations, just put your name on a sheet and they'll call you when a table is ready. If you plan on going, you might want to go on a night when you are prepared to wait a little bit. We have yet to try out the outdoor seating - honestly I'm not sure how I would like sitting right on Bluemound (as it could be very noisy). Still - as soon as the weather warms up, it would be great to give it a shot.

Friday night, I was in the mood for something different. I haven't had Barbiere's pizza in at least 5 years, so I checked in, sat down and looked at the menu. Then I thought, I have no idea how the rest of the food is here. So I decided to postpone my pizza craving and try an entree. I decided on the meat lasagna. The meat really just comes from the meat sauce that they use, but as long as there is meat, I'm good. There were also mushrooms and LOTS of cheese. You can order the entrees a la carte or as a dinner. A la carte comes with one large chunk of garlic bread. The dinner comes with a cup of minestrone soup, a small antipasto salad (with meats and cheeses), two large chunks of garlic bread and the entree. Everything tasted great and all for just $14.95! After the soup, salad, and one chunk of garlice bread, I was full! I took a few bites of the lasagna and took the rest home along with the other garlic bread. Talk about great value...two big meals, one fair price. The menu options are limited compared to larger Italian restaurants, but a lot of care seems to go into the food. There is also a limited selection for beer and spirits, but this is a restaurant, not a tavern. I will have to return for pizza another day soon to take care of that craving I had.

Lasagna is outstanding! If you remember how Mama Mia's use to make it, that's how they make it here. I recommend doing the takeout route since you get more food for the same price. Minestrone soup, garlic bread and antipasto salad are excellent as well. The rest of the food such as the pizza and spaghetti are so-so.

Best garlic bread EVER. Love love love the garlic bread and the spaghetti with meat sauce. My bf thinks the pizza is the best in Milwaukee. We live in Charlotte and every time we go home we eat at Barbiere's at least once. You won't go wrong with lunch or dinner at Barbiere's.

Let me just say that if you leave the Midwest you will not find pizza as good as Barbiere's! I lived around the corner from this place almost my entire life and when I moved away I knew I'd be leaving my favorite pizza behind. I've never eaten their pasta, probably because I've always been so enamored with their pizza. I always get sausage pizza with mushrooms and olives. The crust is typical Midwest style-- thin, crusty like a cracker and flaky. Delicious. The sauce is another big component of their pizza, it's flavorful and has a touch of sweetness to it without going too far. Two words: GARLIC BREAD. Your taste buds will thank you but your heart probably will not! It's soaked in butter then baked. So, so good. If I'm not mistaken I'm almost sure their garlic bread is a Milwaukee legend. Every time I visit Milwaukee I make Barbiere's a priority! Service is consistently good even with takeout. They also have a small patio for dining outside. If you go during Brewer games expect a crowd.

Its Super Bowl Sunday & I've got my pizza from Barbiere's. Unfortunately, the pizza wasn't that good. Very salty & a little skimpy on the toppings (for $18 bucks I expected more). Their sauce was still good but overall disappointed. I have been here before and had a good za so I will give it another try.

first visit - was nearby with the wife, Yelped for Italian, ended up at Barbiere's. 5.0+++ stars for the server - she was very friendly and attentive.. 4.5 stars for ambiance - it is what it is, a neighborhood joint, maybe a little rundown, but clean The Food: 3.25 stars - 8" pepperoni pizza - I prefer a thinner crust, but plenty of cheese, and decent flavor to the pepperoni - I had to add dried pepper flakes to add a bit of kick. 5.0-stars - the garlic bread is soaked in butter, nice garlic flavor, thick and hearty, and unhealthy 3.5-stars - Spaghetti w/meatballs - she liked the spaghetti and sauce, but was not fond of the meatballs. I tried one, maybe veal/pork based, with romano cheese - they were okay...I had no issue with the flavor. 4.0 stars - lasagna - plenty of gooey cheese, pasta was cooked perfectly - not a fan of mushrooms, but thankfully very few were present. Sauce could use just a little something... 4.5 stars - wife's meal came with soup, a house salad, which includes several slices of cheese, and salami. The dressing was a bit bland. The portion is enough for two. with her dinner, she also received a scoop of spumoni ice cream - perfect way to end the meal. the whole meal cost about $40 with tax...and enough leftovers for two lunches the next day. We live about 40 miles away from this location, so, may have to try their newer, south Milwaukee restaurant..

Talk about overhyped. I just don't get the rave reviews, but maybe I came on an off day. The Garlic bread should be called Butter bread. It's soaked in butter, and hardly garlic-y. I want my garlic bread to have actual pieces of garlic and make my breath stink for hours. In other words, I wanna be able to whisper "hello" and kill a vampire, capiche? The Pizza was just ok too. If you like thin, crunchy crusts, then you'll probably like it here. But it was super greasy and the sauce was over-seasoned with salt. We went on a slow afternoon, and the service was pretty inattentive. No excuse really, as there were only 2 other tables to serve. Maybe I should give it another try, but seriously...why waste my time?

I've been a fan of Barbiere's for over 20 years, beginning with their Bluemound locaton. The food has been wonderfully consistent in all these years. I cannot remember one bad meal here. My go to dinner is their chicken tetrazzini, which I typically add mozzarella baked on top. OMG! Heaven! The dinner always includes garlic bread (order a side of meat sauce with it), antipasta salad (always fresh & crisp) and spamoni (not overly sweet, great stuff). I also love their pizza and always order half sausage, mushroom onion on one half and the other half pepperoni, tomato and onion. Always done right, fresh ingredients, served nice and hot! I think I've just convinced myself to order take out for the Packer game!

We've been here a of couple times recently. Typical Milwaukee pizza parlor decor and helpful staff, once you get over the decor... or lack thereof. Though our taste buds really enjoyed the garlic bread which is off the charts, I'm sure our cardiovascular system did not! It is completely buttered (perhaps even dipped in melted butter before it comes out)--in fact my mom asked if the slices were wrapped in plastic! The salad is very tasty and includes delicious cheese and meat slices. As for the pizza, it was very delicious and not too greasy. I wish they had an option for grilled chicken and more veggies, but it is what it is. One other note is that the pizza is cut in triangular slices (standard pizza cutting) rather than the square slices more typically seen around town. This was a welcome change.

Best Spumoni I have ever had. Garlic bread is great, but your heart will pay for it! The salad was ok. I would have liked more meat in the spaghetti sauce and wished it was less runny, though. The service was fast and kind. There was a line out the door when we arrived and when we left.

The star of the show here is the garlic bread but I love their pizza, too. I once took a friend here and that friend said there was too much cheese on the pizza. Is there such a thing?!! The perfect thin and crispy crust. Every time I'm in Milwaukee I must go!

This is a great Italian restaurant. I highly recommend trying the garlic bread when you go there, a real treat! When I go, I get the spaghetti with meatless sauce and am satisfied every time to the point where I have to take home leftovers. One more tip I would have is to get there early on Friday and Saturday nights, the space in the restaurant is limited and so is the wait area.

I've only had take out here but have tried several things. First the good... the pizza is pretty good. Above average, I like the thin-ish crust, decent sauce, it's a bit greasy but isn't that what it's all about? Salad was also very good with a nice Italian dressing. Now the not so good... the ravoli was big but dry. Portion was big and I had the smaller lunch one. Bread was big and greasy. I'd recommend this but stick with the pizza and maybe a salad if you're pretending to be healthy! I haven't dared to eat inside... looks interesting to put it nice!

This is by far my favorite pizza in the Milwaukee area. The bread is incredible too. I like doing the spaghetti dinner now & then too, but it's not especially noteworthy. The thin crust pizza, garlic bread dripping in butter, and great salads are the target items that make this our local favorite.

My favorite place for garlic bread in the world. Yes I said the world. I get the "snack" every time I go. Love the sauce and meatballs. Family owned and just perfect for a quick bite.

Last time we ordered we received the wrong pizza & had to make a trip back and wait for a new one. This time our pizza was runny on top & the crust was hard & burnt. I don't know whats changed, but we won't be back.

My friend and I have ordered take out from here about 3 times. She orderes the cheese ravioli with alfredo sauce and I order the lasagna and we both get tiramisu. The the entrees are quite large servings which makes the price very reasonable. The entrees also come with a large piece of garlic bread which is quite delicious. The lasagna is really WAY to salty, however my friend loves the ravioli with alredo, which comes with plenty of extra alfredo for dipping. The first time I ordered the lasagna it was great, however the last two times is been close to unedible with so much salt. The tiramisu is amazing. I would give a 4 star rating, however the lasagna (which is my favorite go-to italian dish) is like a salt lick. Thus, I think 3 stars is fair. I plan on ordering some different items in the future however I hope the owner sees this review as I think their lasagna could be phenominal if they don't use so much salt/garlic salt. Hopefully their other menu items with marana sauce aren't so salty.

This is not the first pizza I've tried in the Milwaukee area, but it is the first lasagna. I will say that I'm not normally a lasagna connoisseur...I've eaten bites of lasagna from a half dozen restaurants in Illinois (where I came from) and can say they were all OK. THIS, however, is my new favorite lasagna, and I am already plotting the next time I can make it over here to have some! In this cozy restaurant with an atmosphere reminiscent of great family pizza/pasta places in central Illinois, my husband was quizzing the waitress on whether he should try the pizza or lasagna. Brilliant on her part, she said why not try a 10-inch pizza and an order of lasagna and we could share both? We had the sausage pizza and were told that the cheese is hand grated. It was delicious, as was the lasagna -- meaty, cheesy (with what seemed to be ricotta and mozzarella and savory mushrooms). We reigned ourselves in and took half the pizza and half the lasagna home with us. We did have the garlic bread and I will have to agree with another Yelper, when I order something with garlic in the name, I love to see big chunks of garlic or at least big garlic flavor. I couldn't taste the garlic, but my husband did discover a shaker on the table that appeared to have garlic powder in it. I could skip the garlic bread next time. The kicker for me was that we reheated the pizza one night on the old Pizzaz oven at home and it was delicious! I have never been a fan of reheated pizza, so this was a real standout. and the cheese was especially ooey gooey. And, on top of that, I later microwaved the lasagna and it too still had incredible flavor! Could it be that these wonderful ingredients marinated to perfect harmony in our fridge for a day or two? Who knows, but I'm looking forward to a great meal and great leftovers the next time I go! Once I sample some more Milwaukee-area lasagna I may have to upgrade this review to five stars because it may be "As good as it gets!" for me!
