Tacos El Rey has to be my favorite restaurant in Kenosha for one simple reason: condiment bar. So the food here may not be authentic or incredible (it certainly isn't true Mexican food), but the single best part about dining in at Tacos El Rey is the salsa bar that greats each customer. There are three different kinds of salsa (I prefer the thin, mild red sauce) that each have a different flavor and heat level along with a bin of fresh pickled jalapenos. It is simply incredible. I have even been known to eat several (okay around 6) jalapenos before my food even comes. There aren't waitresses here, which inevitably helps to keep the prices so low, and you even have to pick up your own silverware on the way to the booth of your choice, but it is worth it. This place feels homey and comfortable and the food is great Mexican-American food. The chimichangas are spectacular and the refried beans with chips are great too. I wouldn't go to Tacos El Rey expecting a fine dining experience, but if you are in the mood for cheap, tasty food in a comfortable atmosphere, look no further.

Tacos El Ray delivers. It's cheap food. It tastes good. It's pretty fast. I've been here a lot for lunch and it doesn't disappoint... then again, my expectations were low. The food tastes good... thus it becomes a great gathering place for a group of people for lunch. The menu items are essentially a la carte, but it still totals under a few dollars. I wouldn't make it a destination if you are traveling from a far, but if you're nearby... do stop.

What a fantastic find hidden away in Kenosha. Great prices, food and the guacamole is some of the best I have had. Service is quick and friendly. I recommend calling ahead if you are picking up because this place gets busy!

  • Jesse C.

This place is not bad at all. There is plenty of seating inside although they do have a lot of customers call ahead for take out. It gets busy around dinner time for the take out part. Their service is nice and the food doesn't take too long when you 'order in.' The lighting inside is kinda strange, little dark in the entrance and first seating area. The farther back seating has lights windows and a sky light window providing a better ambiance. Overall, this is a nice place to try out if you are in the area.

THE best Mexican restaurant in Kenosha! The guac, tacos, burritos, fajitas, and enchiladas are all amazing. A must for anyone staying in Kenosha for a while.

Went this past sunday night and ordered carry out. Ordered a chimichanga and some guacamole. Waited a reasonable amount of time and was rewarded for the wait. The chimichanga was large and delicious. The guacamole was not quite as thick as i prefered but that could have been cause I waite just a little bit of time to eat it. Girlfirend's side of beans were delcious with chips as was the shell to her taco salad. We will definitely be making trips back to this establishment. Food went very well with homemade margaritas. If were not planning on those again, I would definitely like to eat in the restaurant as it is decorated very nicely with a good amount of seating.

I frequent this restaurant because they have the best Mexican food in town. Speedy service and great food. Their burritos are huge! My son likes the steak asada burrito, I like the al pastor (pork) burrito myself. The tacos are excellent also. They have a homemade hot sauce that rocks!

  • Megan T.

I got the combination #2 and can't say I enjoyed any of it. You have to ask for Chips if you are dinning in and the place could really use a facelift. The two guys working the counter were just standing there when there was dirty u Bales that they could Have been clearing. They were not busy they menu is rather confusing split in four seperated boards and the overall atmosphere is unwelcoming. When your order is ready they yell your name. There just has to be a better place for Mexican food. The kids menu is a rip off... The quesadilla wasn't even served with rice and beans and one small tortilla cut in half the sign says a kids toy and that we never saw. They don't have MJ for the kids meals...who give their kids pop? I can go on.... Other than my husband saying his chimichanga was good, I'm not sure why I am even giving this place 2 stars.

    (2)
  • Katie M.

I don't know how anyone could not give this place 5 stars! Great food, friendly owners. It's more of a fast food type of place... Which is perfect for families who want a quick meal.

Great inexpensive food. A frequent favorite.

  • Sarah B.

Really underwhelming - exactly what the 2 stars says "Meh. I've experienced better."

  • Dave B.

Third time's a charm. I waited until I ate here 3 times to write a review. Every time coworkers and I came here for dine-in, all of our meals come out at various times, which wouldn't be a problem except that there's a 15 minute interval. One guy gets a hot meal, the next guy gets a warm meal, and then I get a warm meal 15 minutes later! They serve food and take dirty trays at the same spot, there's nowhere to leave your dirties except the table. From the tortillas to the rice and yes even the meat, it's all industrially made, not a single authentic meal or side item from what I've tasted. Simply not worth it, La Fey Cafe further south is authentic and MUCH MUCH better!

  • Frank K.

Great food have eaten their food at both locations since the early 1990's. However there customer service in Kenosha is terrible. The way I was treated today will probably keep me from going back. Sad, very sad. When you make a mistake, multiple on the same order, correct the problem, don't start out by arguing with the customer. I WILL NOT be treated as I was by anyone and return.

  • Catherine R.

The best authentic Mexican good in town! I would recommend for carry out, nothing too special about dining in. You order at the counter and sit, not full service, but so worth it for carry out. Recommend the chicken burrito, nachos, enchiladas. But everything is consistently awesome though!!

    (5)
  • Antonio M.

Are you thinking Mexican tonight? Your decision has been made and you will be getting Tacos El Rey, Why, because the food is awesome. For only two bucks try the wrapped tacos; a soft shell taco covered in refried beans, wrapped around a hard shell taco, then filled with your choice of meat(chicken, steak, beef, or pork), cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream. They offer combo meals that include a side of rice and beans. The prices are reasonable and you'll get a sizable amount of food. Now that you're over the border, try some authentic Mexican food.

  • Jeff S.

Food was very good at the beginning, not so great towards the end. Not saying the place has bad food, I think I just might have eaten too much. I like the idea of being served at the counter and then going to seat yourself in a booth... I mention this because when you walk in for the first time it seems like you might have to wait to be seated, although this is not so. They also had a salsa bar with jalapeños peppers, which other reviews have raved about, but did not really impress me. I guess it's cool that it's self-service so you can get as much as you want, but three types of salsa and some peppers don't make me giddy like a school girl. Service was good but not anything special. I probably will not go there again just because the food didn't blow me away, and there are so many other Mexican style restaurants in the area to try.

  • David B.

I'm not sure how their food was in 2008-2009, but the last THREE times we went there, it was below MEH, it was kind of gross. All 4 of us at the table were looking at each other wondering if we were imagining it. We weren't! The tacos el pastor were GARBAGE! Speaking of garbage, when you walk through the door, the bathrooms are right there. Whatever cleansers they use, the lobby smells like salsa and urinal cookies- GROSS! We will not be returning. Whatever recipe they may have had for success, they need to find it again because they straight up SUCK!

Nine times out of ten, if I am going out for Mexican in Kenosha, it is to Tacos El Rey. I have a weakness for hardshell tacos that aren't utter crap, and Tacos el Rey is where I get my fix.

Fast food mexian, and whats with paying for your food before you eat it. What if you don't like it, you already paid for it.

My family's favorite Mexican restaurant! Love their food. I've been eating here for well over 20+ years. Service is always friendly, food is great. Prices are reasonable. Bathroom could use an update and a check that it is stocked with toilet paper more often. The last time I was there the one toilet wasn't working and there was no tp anywhere.

  • Jim J.

Fantastic food for great prices. Been going here for years. I have been ordering the taco pizza for about a decade, even before it was on the menu. So big I can no longer finish it in-house. Nice ambiance, clean dining for the whole family.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
