My review of the House of Gerhard is mixed. I had an amazing server who did a great job pacing the meal. She was attentive, but also gave enough space. I'd give the place 6 stars just based on the server. The food, however, was mixed. The house appetizers (cucumber salad, little toasts and liver pâté...) are excellent. Soup (stuffed cabbage) was tasteless and lacking of cabbage. The biggest disappointment is that according to my server, their schnitzels are made from turkey cutlets! I'll be honest... I found my schnitzel dinner to be rather disappointing. Not a turkey cutlet schnitzel fan, nor did the burned spaetzle add to my meal. So, for the food, the good stars get wiped out by the (Nicht authentisch!!!) schnitzel. Doing some magic yelp math, forgetting to carry a 1,applying some fuzzy logic... the best I can give this place is 3 stars.

AUTHENTISCH! I finally was able to visit Gerhard and I was pleasantly surprised. I like it more than any German restaurant in the city of Chicago (Berghoff, Glunz, Brauhaus, etc.). Kenosha has always had a German and Italian influence...but its cultural authenticity makes it stand out among other towns. Originally I was turned away by the high prices but it turns out that this is only for dinner. Go for LUNCH! It seems that you get the same items and quality, just reasonable prices. The average price is $8-12 and entrees includes a soup/salad (try their homemade mustard dressing), chose of potato (gotta always go with the delectable spaetzles which are perfectly buttered and browned), and a side of perfectly sour redish-purple cabbage. While I couldn't turn down the daily special of Pot Roast, my friend got the Hungarian Ghoulash. Both were absolutely delicious and so tender that they shred when touched with the fork. Yum to both gravies too. My favorite part is the not only the decor but how the waiters are dressed in German fashion skirt and blouse. Simply cute! For those of you who go to Gerhard, reservations are recommended and it is said to be a great place for banquets/luncheons. I'll be back this weekend with the boyfriend :X.

Super yummy and come with an appetite!!! I am not a fan of beef and there was only one chicken dish on the menu but it was so good that it warrants a repeat. Make a reservation because the dining area is small and parking is a bit of a pain during the dinner rush. Staff was friendly and attentive prices reasonable. Worth the trip.

Went there for lunch after half day walking in museums in Kenosha. We're seated in their wing room (more like sun room) along with other customers. It's a lovely building. The service's nice as well. Since we came at lunch time, the price are still lunch price, so we can afford it ;P I ordered The Bavarian pot roast, which was the special of the day menu; while my husband chose schnitzel. All the entree comes with salad or soup. I got salad and husband got beef noodle soup, which is FANTASTIC! ok, next time that's what i'm gonna have. My pot roast was so tender and juicy, suit perfectly with German fries and sauerkraut. The schnitzel also pleased my husband picky taste bud. I can't blame him, he used to work in German for years and misses a good schnitzel. This one really made him happy. We'll keep this restaurant in our list and will come back, definitely!

Recommended by a good friend to stop by while visiting Kenosha. She always has great suggestions and this one didn't disappoint! The staff were friendly and had an air that they were thrilled to be there serving us. Always on hand with suggestions from the menu and willing to give honest opinions. We ordered two items from the specials list. The cedar plank salmon was delicious and melted in your mouth. The German platter was a sampler of a wurst (I don't remember which), a chop and a rouladen. All were excellent!

It's an OK German restaurant for the Kenosha area. I have eaten here twice, I don't think I would be going back. If you want truly great German food take the time to go to Maders in Milwaukee.

We went here for a work holiday dinner. We all ordered the prime rib and everyone seemed to enjoy their meal. I had the blue cheese crust and horseradish sauce with spaetzle. Excellent German food!

Went after years of driving by & always being intrigued by supper club type places. I got the schnitzel and spatzel w/ cabbage slaw. The highlight was the slaw. Schnitzel was thin and tough along with being flavorless unless dunked in the dijon sauce. The spatzel was as bland as bland could be. Service was decent, although we sat by the entrance to the dining room and could feel all the people walking by through the floor. I'll probably go back sometime for the prime rib since I hear that's their forte. Maybe then the review will climb up. We'll see...

This is a third generation family restaurant started in 1964 by a young German immigrant. His grandchildren now run the business. My wife and I agree that this is the best prime rib we've ever had. I also had sausage, sauerkraut, and broasted pork that were amazing. The sides are solid, but not quite amazing. Still though, you have to go here. The decor is very campy, the service is excellent, and the crowd...well, be nice to your fellow patrons, cause most will probably die of natural causes soon, as the tables around us were full of octogenarians. My wife is half Jewish, and my great uncle served at the Battle of the Bulge. The only thing that could have ruined this meal was asking about the founder's life before leaving Germany in 1964. So we didn't.

House of Gerhard is one of the best German Restuarants in all of Chicagoland. That's right, in the name of Rahm Emanuel, I'm officially declaring Kenosha as part of Chicagoland (much to the dismay of my Cheesehead friends). Unfortunately, many of the great German restaurants are gone (Golden Ox, Schulien's, Zum Deutschen Eck, and Dieterle's to name a few). But House of Gerhard carries on the strong German tradition, and doesn't appear to be slowing down a bit. To that point, I strongly recommend reservations on Friday and Saturday nights. Let me start by saying House of Gerhard has the best Prime Rib my wife and I have EVER had. Anywhere. Hands down. Nobody comes close. Four of us stopped in today for lunch, and everyone left happy. I had the Sauerbraten, which was very good (3rd only to my mom's and Mader's in Milwaukee). I also had the Goulash soup, which was excellent (my wife, son, and daughter all echoed this sentiment). My wife had beef stroganoff which was top notch. My daughter had Gerhard Schnitzel, it is made from turkey - very good. My son had these amazing schnitzel cordon bleu sandwiches on pretzel buns. For dinner you receive complementary bread, liver pate, and a relish tray. At lunch you receive the bread basket, but can request the liver pate and relish tray for a small charge. Service is always excellent and very friendly. If you are looking for quality German food in the northern suburbs (see what I did there), go to House of Gerhard. If your dining party doesn't want German, no problem, they have many non-German entrées. Prost!

Great, authentic real cooking here. Service was excellent. Menu has nice variety and great specials made daily to choose from. The soup and bread, entire meal was like family style cooking (homemade). Something that is desired and I hope this place continues to stay and not be pushed out by the disgusting chain restaurants with box and can food that Americans seem to enjoy or just don't know any better.

House of Gerhard was recommended to us by a local couple who raved about the great German faire...they couldn't have been more right. Our first trip was a treat. The entire staff was friendly and polite. The food was terrific...I had the Kassler Ripchen (smoked pork chop) and it was wonderful. My wife tried their liver and onions and said it was just like grandma made...which is very good. We left very satisfied believing that these people know how to run a restaurant.

Great place. The kraut and brats are great. The beer is good as well.the seafood dish was great as well. Just slightly overcooked.

The service was decent, for our waitress was very sweet. Not the fastest, in which being a server myself, I am very critical in accuracy and speed. The ambience is very fun and different and totally a Kenosha restaurant. The servers wore German dresses and looked very cute. The only tip I would like to give is do NOT get their steaks! I first started with the New York Strip and it was circled in pure lard. Normally NY steaks are highly marbleized, but this cut was just chunks of fat. I had return it and order the Filet Mignon. I expected it to be much better taste wise, but still had funky taste, but at least it was not surrounded by fat. I recommend giving this place a shot and getting their fish, just DO NOT get any steaks!

SPATZEL ME! Today was the day we finally conquered The House of Gerhard! About 9 years ago we peaked in here to check it out, fell in love with it and promised to come back but it never happen. There was always some excuse like "I don't want a heavy German dinner in July" or "I really don't want to have a second dinner." Well today we had no excuses. The restaurant is really cute when you walk in. You immediately see the bar and it's a place you want to drink at. It's dark and mysterious and is the perfect place to relax. The restaurant has been around since 1966 and is a favorite with the locals. There was a very decent lunch crowd in here considering it was only 10 degrees outside. The hostess asked where we wanted to sit and we grabbed a table near the Christmas tree. She also brought over a giant board with all of the specials and placed it in front of our table. It was kind of funny at first like an SNL skit but we got use to it staring at us. I posted a picture of it. I also got to see the backside of it, when another table sat next to us. It looked like an old microphone stand and the sign dangled back and forth a little when it was moved. Our waitress was very nice but I don't think we really connected with her. I think she was nervous because we weren't regulars and we had no idea what we were doing. So that kind of threw her off. I had a bunch of questions like why was the Schnitzel made from turkey breast. I was hoping to actually get an answer but it never happen. She assured me that it was really good. I was really on the fence but decided to go for it. I must admit it was really good. I was surprised at how good it was. They might be on to something here. The Gerhard Schnitzel also came with a choice of potato. I was deciding between potato pancake and Spatzel. I finally chose the Spatzel and our waitress suggested I put gravy on top. Hey it's Wisconsin that's advice you take. I will say the gravy made it complete. I was really happy. There was also a side of carrots too which were over cooked but delicious and sweet. Typically a side of carrots are tasteless. The Schnitzel also came with a cup of soup. I decided to go with the Bier Soup. When it arrived at the table it was cold in temperature. I flagged down the waitress and told her. She said, "I asked him if it was warm and he said yes!" So I'm not sure what that meant. Maybe my cup went into the microwave on its return back to the kitchen. When it did come back it was hot and had what looked like the microwave cooked ring on the top of the bowl. I will say that the soup was unique and good. There was chunks of the sweet carrot and onion in the soup. I was house made but sent out cold. After it was warmed up it was very tasty. There were two other soups offered. A chicken Spatzel which was delicious. In fact, this was the star of the show here. I snuck a spoon from my little one. My wife had the split pea which was good but it had rich hints of smoke in it, most likely from a smoked ham. She loved it. I thought it was good but I probably couldn't eat more then two spoons of it because of the overpowering smoke taste. My wife got the BLT and it was a huge disappointment. I felt bad for her. I would have expected the bacon to be better in quality and cooked properly. In fact, most of the bacon was inedible because it was really fatty. In retrospect we should have alerted the waitress but we didn't. We really don't like sending things back and we already had the cold soup sent back. There is also a basket of buns which includes rolls and fruit cup muffins. I only had the rolls and they were really good. My little liked both. This place has a lot of flair for a German restaurant. There are not many of these types of places around anymore, so when you see one you have to enjoy it. Hey it took us 9 years before we finally ate here. This place is a solid 4 in Kenosha but it would probably rate lower if it was located in downtown Chicago. I have to appreciate it for what it is and being in business for 48 years says you're doing something right. So I raise my glass and say, "Prost!" And I'm coming back for a giant bowl of that Chicken Spatzel soup...hopefully it doesn't take another 9 years before we return.

I had my second experience at gerhards today and will definitely be returning. It's quirky, German/Wisconsin charm really makes this place a gem. They have excellent German beers as well as local brews and spirits. The waitress asked what brought us in, and we were celebrating the purchase of a home in pleasant prairie as well as my birthday this weekend. I ordered the prime rib and it was fantastic! At the end of our meal they brought out a huge slice of cake with a candle in it for me and everyone in the restaurant ( all 3 tables at 5:30pm) sang. I can't wait for my next visit to gerhards- just remember to come hungry!!!

Great German food, but the best is probably the prime rib. They also have an excellent fish fry on Fridays. Only negative that I would give is that they are very pricey. Expect to pay between $100 to $150 per couple depending if you have drinks. That is the cost/benefit argument. Is it good enough to command Chicago prices? FYI..they also have excellent bartenders that make all the drinks from the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's.

The best prime rib in town!! Family owned, Excellent service, great cocktails and wonderful nightly specials. Been there several times and have never had a bad experience.

This place is amazing! We were in town visiting my dad and he took us there! From the minute we walked in greeted right away! Our waitress Janice awesome! My husband ordered the diamond Cut prime rib. Huge and tasted great. Said it was best he ever had. I had the schnitzel. It was amazing! This will be my first stop when I go to Kenosha again.

This review is based on multiple visits and menu items. Service is pretty good considering the crowded environment. If you stick to the schnitzels and traditional German items it is great to excellent (4 stars), however, their so called famous bouillabaisse is absolutely horrible. We even ordered it the day before we arrived, plenty of time to ensure that the dish for two would have that rich developed flavor that is critical in this dish, the broth was bland, no depth in flavor and what little flavor there was was not very good. The seafood inside it was frozen burned items not even taken care of properly. And we still had to wait an hour to get it! though it was ordered the previous day! The prime rib and steak on other occasions are soso... I can do better at home at a far less price. So stick with the schnitzel and its great, but thats it! Oh great German beer selection is always a plus. But the two star rating is an average, thats how bad the bouillabaisse (that they are famous for) is!

Our family choses Gerhards for birthdays and special events. We love the ambience, the staff is friendly and decor is fun. If you are looking for a place to have a fast meal, this is not it. Great german beer selection and Wiener schnitzel. My go to dish is the cordon blue schnitzel with speatzle. They also have a delicious prime rib. This is a must try for a nice dinner, different from the norm.

We have been here several times. One of my favorites is sauerbraten, purple cabbage and the liver pate. The slaw and the bar cheese spread are great. I will say I think the sauerbraten has slipped from a 5 to a 4. The taste is still good, but I don't think it's as good as it used to be. We will be back net time we are in Kenosha.

This place was disappointing from start to finish. It took 20 minutes for the waitress to take our order, she forgot one of our appetizers and the other came out cold. They had run out, so there was only enough for one person in our party. Even to get water, we consistently had to flag someone down. From start to finish, dinner took over two hours, way more than we'd bargained for! As for the food...The dinner rolls tasted like they'd been purchased at a day old bakery sale. The sausage and kraut appetizer we ordered turned out not to be much more than hotdog slices in kraut. The spaetzle was bland and gummy. The schnitzel and steamed carrots were the highlight of the meal, but even those were pretty bland. Also, good luck finding anything low fat, low cholesterol or vegetarian on the menu. Overall nothing to write home about, and definitely not worth enduring the phenomenally bad service.

My meal at House of Gerhard was perfectly average. The restaurant is nice and cozy, if really dated, and the people for the most part were very nice. The bartenders did not seem too happy that by eating at the bar I was taking a spot that could have been filled by a harder drinker. On to the food. Lots of it, since you get a relish, cheese and crackers, liver pate and garlic toasts (very good), hard rolls and muffins, and a cup of hearty soup or salad with your entree. But my entree -- holsteiner schnitzel -- was just mediocre, and the spaetzel and carrots on the plate had little flavor. So if you just want to have some German food, this is certainly a decent choice, but keep your expectations fairly modest.

First off - DEFINITELY make reservations. Even if it's same day, call and book! When we showed up around 4:30PM, the place was empty, but the place filled up fast within the next hour. I'm happy to have finally tried this place. It's a bit pricey, but I would definitely go again. They start you off with bread, corn muffins, bean salad, liver pate and garlic toast. The liver pate is freaking awesome. I wish they gave more - only gave like an ice cream scoop worth to share between three people, and believe me, we downed that quickly. Even my friend who isn't an adventurous eater said it was good. I ordered the German Platter (special of the day, ~$21), which starts you off with a soup. I chose the stuffed pepper soup, which was pretty good. The platter comes with a smoked pork chop, a rouladen (stuffed, rolled beef), a knockwurst (I think - it's the one that tastes like kielbasa), spaetzle and sauerkraut. My favorite were definitely the pork chop and spaetzle. They browned the spaetzle in butter. Yum. Service was excellent. The waitresses were friendly and attentive. The owner dropped by every single table to wish the guests a happy new year. Two complaints: 1. The restaurant space was too tight. My friend had to get up to allow an older lady with a walker pass by (not that big of a deal), but the waitress, in her fluffy outfit, kept knocking stuff off our table with her butt, mid dinner. 2. We waited about 20-30 minutes for our food. Even the waitress must have noticed, because she told us twice that she would check in the kitchen for us.

The pork shank is the best hands down. Great sides, great decor and don't forget the beer. Huge list of German brews! Wait staff was super friendly and just a cool place to go!

Great German food, amazing drinks and the best prime rib around. My only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is price--- honestly never has stopped me from going though! Always great service too. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a more home cooked, unique dinner! A must see in Kenosha!

The food was so authentic and delicious. I went with my grandma (who makes German food) and have never taken her to a place where she was more impressed! And the atmosphere also makes it feel like home - but a classier version!! Before the meal we had the soups of the day: Beef Barely, was the thickest I've ever had, no skimping at this place! & Red Bean w/ Swiss Chard, simply wonderful! Perfectly seasoned) Also, to our delight, before dinner you get a couple of sides: liver spread (just like I used to eat as a kid) with garlic toast and cole slaw (not the mayo kind, it was a bit tangy w/ a hint of sweet - light and easy to eat). For dinner I decided to go balls-to-the-wall German and try the Sauerbraten. It is definitely true to the name with a sour flavor Germans love! The meat fell apart with my fork, just the way it should :) The red cabbage is super sour, even more so than sauerkraut. If you are sensitive to this authentic flavor, be choosy what you order or get as a side. My grandma ordered Hungarian Goulash. Holy heaven, was this great! Meat, tender - sauce, balanced & seasoned well, mushrooms were WHOLE! I fell in love! The spaetzel was plush, puffy, little mini dumplings. You can tell everything was homemade. Can't wait to go back!!! (Fridays only can you get potato pancakes)

My wife and I decided on a weeknight dinner out last night in Kenosha and since we hadn't been before thought we would give House of Gerhard a try. First of all, the atmosphere is what you would expect from a German restaurant in Wisconsin and the servers even wear German-ish garb. The menu includes a variety of german dishes, steaks and prime rib, and fish entrees. The wife had a trio of german sausages with kraut and I had prime rib with a baked potato. My prime rib was excellent, you could actually cut it with a fork like out waitress claimed. I ordered medium rare and my cut was perfectly done. My wife spoke highly of her meal as well. All of the entrees come with a choice of soup or salad as well as bread, liver pate, and their german relish of the day (which was a kidney bean salad on our visit). I washed it all down with a Hoffbrah Dunkel on tap. Overall it is a nice restaurant and I'm sure we will return.

I've been eating at House of Gerhard for years. I enjoy the beef rouladen quite a bit. We had a poor experience on Friday night. Had to wait for 20 minutes even though we had a reservation. Then the service was very poor. I had to ask to see the specials board. My wife order the oskar schnitzel but instead was served the oskar chicken. When I asked about this, I was specifically told that's how it was prepared. My wife didn't like it and ate less than half of it. When the check came I saw that the waitress had indeed written down the wrong item. The waitress would disappear for lengthy periods of time. Never asked about getting more drinks, never asked if we wanted dessert. Only got about half the normal house appetizers. She didn't know what soups they had. It was clear that other tables were getting better service so I guess we were just unlucky. After spending north of $100 on dinner, it left a really bad taste in my mouth. If I want German food again, I'll just go up to Milwaukee.

Wow, a meal here includes a lot of food. Before the meal, we were served a basket of crackers, liver pate with garlic toasts, a white roll, a cranberry muffin, fresh sauerkraut salad, and a cup of thick soup. All delicious! For the entrees, we ordered the Beef Stroganoff and the Beef Rouladen. OMG the beef in both was so tender and delicious. Everything excellent, so happy!

Second time I've been here and the prime rib is even better then I remember. Its a little disorganized when you get here so you need to be on top of the hostess so they don't forget about you. Once seated everything is great. The waitress was really nice. My girl says that her Oscar schnitzel was a little bland.

I had just arrived in Wisconsin from California to visit family and I knew I didn't want fast food for dinner so I asked my iPhone where I could get authentic German Fare and was directed to House of Gerhard. Wow what an amazing experience. From the kind and courteous service to the great food this is a one of a kind restaurant and totally worth the detour off the highway. Had the bratwurst and boyfriend had sauerbraten. Very yummy, and perfect potato pancakes! Called on the way in for a reservation and they were able to get us in easily and were super friendly. Great experience all around.

I went here with such high hopes. Maybe we should have stuck to German food? But we thought we'd try the "English Fish Fry". (In a German restaurant??) Fried cod (excellent) potato pancake (OK) some cooked carrots, and as some mentioned, pâté , beets and garlic toast. Not all of that is on my list of favorite foods. The waitress forgot our drinks, and had to be reminded. When the bill came, it was a $20 overcharge. She fixed it promptly, I don't think it was intentional. It was a long drive, and a not so great experience, so I do not foresee a return trip.

Chose this spot for a Saturday night after visiting Bristol Faire. The August weather was perfect when we arrived around 5:30 in casual attire. We were immediately greeted and we called out that we were "new" to the place, we were instantly welcomed and treated like family. Our server, Kennedy, was thoughtful, helpful, attentive and polite. The wait staff was fantastic, attending to water glasses and bussing the table when appropriate. I'm all about good service and this place nails it! Homemade peach sangria was a fantastic opener while we enjoyed the outdoor patio dining area. Liver pate, garlic points, home made rolls, coleslaw were a welcome starter. We both ordered prime rib, one with baked potato, one with potato pancakes. For dessert, a single plate of Black Forest Cake and a cup of fine coffee from Vienna was a perfect end to a delightful experience. The cost for dinner was right around $100 for two, including drinks and dessert. The house staff was friendly and welcoming, the food was fantastic. Worth the trip and a fair price for such a wonderful evening meal.

Have gone to Gerhards on and off for 40 years .Started with parents, thru dating into married with children. Did have the best prime rib, stroganoff, duck, baked french onion etc. Always had pate and kidney bean salad and cot. cheese when you sat down. nice. That is still similar and nice. Now, not sure if It's still family run , but it's not the same quality it used to be. My children liked Gerhard's and would give us gift cert. which we shared with them. After the last 3 times of going none of us are sure we'll go back. Our table had five different things so we had a variety to judge from. My son had the largest prime rib which was good but, the bone side was about 3 inches high and it angled down to an inch so the cooking was not even and it was then more bone than meat. We had a german platter which the chop was bone dry everything else seemed boiled, no sauce and my worst pet peeve is everyone's food was barely warm. yuck! Used to love stopping in for a great old fashion and manhattan. Now an old fashion is in a manhattan glass. Our bill for five of us was 290.00.three of us had one drink the other two had three drinks. We're not sure if in fact they even have a chef or if it's just someone with recipes to follow. Sorry, thought you might like to know. We don't like to complain at the rest. and embarrass people. Maybe we'll try one more time for the good old times.

We hit this place by chance while taking the scenic route from Chicago to Milwaukee a few months ago... I recall very reasonable prices, a lot of food and a friendly waitress from Germany. Hearty entrees with generous portions. It's hard to beat a place that greets you with a big spread of German pate and toast.

Great German restaurant! Decor in the back dining room - think Wisconsin supper club meets Mad Men meets the Sound of Music. You won't leave hungry that's for sure.

I can here by accident one day after buying something from a guy in craigslist. The prices looked decent, and when they had Rouladen made the proper way I knew I had to stay. They say Greek and Italian restaurants stuff you silly. This place will too, and they are very friendly. THere's a German word tossed around alot: Gemütlichkeit. Roughly it means coziness, familiarity, and belonging. I was a friend in their midst who took care of me and I come here periodically with my wife, as the German restaurants in MIlwaukee are sparse, or not German enough for us.

Looking forward to some "GOOD" German food and what do I get fried turkey not PORK! The owners grand kid runs this place now and I bet his grandpa is rolling over in his grave now, feeding the pOOR people Turkey and not Pork! I will never go back and spend my good money at a place that is no longer a place to get GOOD German food!

Meinen Damen und Herren! That's "Ladies and gentlemen" for all you folks who didn't take Deutsch in high school! Make your reservation, or go early (4:30 would be good). Come prepared to dine and dine well. You will be seated by the owner, and then assisted by the fabulous serving staff. You will NOT leave hungry! We had appetizers of cucumber salad, orange muffins, toasts, rolls and pate. SEHR GUT. My late mother-in-law, an Austrian from Linz, would have stuffed it all in her purse, but we ate ours. I ordered the Barvarian pot roast with mashed, while mein Herr had the German platter. We traded plates at midpoint, but I couldn't eat any more than a nibble of the wurst, smoke pork chop, rouladen and spaetzel. I needed room for just a little dessert. We split a piece of black forest torte. It brought memories of being a little girl at my friend's house. His mother, being German, always had German cake in the house, always fresh, always chocolate. My husband was served Julius Meinl coffee, on a silver tray, with a little kuchen. An Old World dining experience, with sehr gemutlicheit!

Was in Kenosha to get some New Glarus beer and stumbled upon House of Gerhard late afternoon on a Saturday. The place was empty when we arrived, but filled up quickly. Good German bier selection, pretty big selection of German food, steaks and seafood, and a cozy dinning room. Food and service was excellent. I had the duck. My husband had beef stroganoff. Prices were good for the amount and quality of food. The complementary appetizers were delicious!!! I would definitely go back. Wish it wasn't so far away, but would make the trip again to enjoy their delicious comfort food. I think I need to try the prime rib next time!

Wow! Come in for the food and stay for the company. Owners and staff make you feel right at home. Prime rib is as good as I have ever had. Looking forward to the duck next time. Thank you Molly and Sabina for making our first time (and my birthday) so special! Love this place!

First time to visit this restaurant. After reading last review, was hoping things had changed. Went for middle of the week early dinner, and was not busy. Waitress was very attentive and dressed in German fashion. Pieces of garlic toast and liver pate were brought to the table. Started with French onion soup, and the cheese on top was really good. Next up was the Trout Almondine which was good, but would have been better without some bones. Plan on going back in the future to try out some different dishes.

Excellent food. Service a little slow but well worth the wait. Drinks were also excellent, and the German beer, well not much more to say. Highly recommended. Started with Navy Bean soup and it was delicious. The house salad dressing was also very good. Loved the little toasts and the liver spread. Very German. My dinner choice was the special of the day. It was a pork shoulder that was marinated in bear and then braised over spaetzel. Great seasoning. loved it. I have been to Gerhard's many times and it has always been a delight. Would have loved to tray the "inside out apple pie with ice cream" but just could not eat another bite.

How two experiences can be SO completely different is beyond me. My husband and I stopped in Friday night and had a fabulous time and dinner at the bar. Met the chef. The bartender was lovely, attentive and fun to chat with. Our server was great. the food was fabulous. we stopped in last night to celebrate a success and we could not believe it was the same place. We initially were the only two patrons at the bar. it was a different bartender and he acted as if he didn't care if we were there. we had to ask for menus. about 5 minutes later another couple sat at the bar and said they wanted to order at the bar and be seated in the dining room for dinner. all 4 of us were told a server would be with us shortly. a server finally came and took the other couples order (they arrived after us) and did not take ours. about 5 minutes later the hostess came and told us a server would be right with us. the bartender was not behind the bar and we could not order another round. finally we had enough of being ignored and when the bartender came back we asked for our drink bill and told him we were leaving and was going to dine else where. he didn't care at all -- didn't ask why. didn't offer to fix things. had the attitude of "See Ya, Bye!". when we got in the parking lot my husband decided to go back and tell the hostess why we left so that she would know. he walked back in and she was busing tables and did even come over to the hostess stand to talk to him. how one establishment can be SOOO different depending on the night and the staff is amazing. Not too interested in trying this for a third time. You might want to address your service issues so other patrons are not treated as badly or as rudely as we were!

I was here yesterday. The service I had was wonderful and the pacing was great, however it was not authentic German. The schnitzel I had was turkey, hello? Not in Germany. I guess I am a little bit of a German food snob since I have been there several times, but you can't call yourself a German restaurant and serve a turkey schnitzel. The spatzle was awful as well. I should have eaten it first but it tasted burnt and very off. Sadly, I will not be back there.

Decided to take a drive today up Sheridan Rd. to Kenosha. We decided to have forgo our usual lunch at Mars Cheese Castle and have some German fare at Gerhard. We were greeted by an incredibly friendly bartender and waitress. Although the service was slow (you won't be in and out) the food is so homemade and fresh tasting. We both started with chicken spatzel soup. It was an ambrosia of fresh vegetables and chunks of white meat chicken with pillowy spaetzel. Husband had the schnitzel and it is a true test of fresh food. It was FRESH - Piping hot and light. I know, breaded meat light? If made right, it should be light. I had the wurst plate (1 brat, 1 knockwurst with kraut). DELICIOUS! The spaetzel was so light and pillowy...sometimes it can be old and pebbly (like Brau Haus in Lincoln Square in Chicago). It was SOOOO good. It's a fun stop in Kenosha while tooling around. Really homemade, fresh food, made with love.

House of Gerhard is a really delicious German restaurant. This isn't the type of food that I'd want on a weekly basis but whenever I've been there the food has been fantastic. The quarters are a little tight but well worth it. I highly recommend the beef stroganoff. I know it's Russian but trust me, you won't be disappointed.

In my entire life there has only been ONE time where I was treated so rudely by the staff, that I walked out immediately....and this was that place. So, what else would you expect me to say? They never got a chance to wow me with their food, since their incredibly ignorant waitress robbed them of that opportunity. Never again will I step foot inside their doors.
