Flashback to 20 years ago when my parents (loyal patrons for decades of Dick's) brought their baby daughter out in public for the first time. Where to? Dick's Bar, of course...and I've loved it ever since! Now before you go on thinking this is strange...give it a chance! While Dick's is a typical, grungy, riverside bar (on the St. Croix in Hudson)...the food and the traditional bar-esque atmosphere make it sooo worth it. So throw on a pair of jeans, or hop off your boat and head on in for some greasy-but-great skin-on fries and fried chicken-in-a-hubcap (their specialty). They have great specials every night and it's just the place to hang out in your comfies with your drinking buddies and food friends! For those not as comfortable with the dirty bar scene. They also have a low-key dining room and an adorable enclosed garden patio in the summertime!

Walking in I thought this was going to be a local dive bar (the 'regular' sitting in the front window didn't help), but its actually a big sprawling bar with a little something for everyone. Seems like standard bar fare - I had a fish sandwich which I don't think I've EVER ordered in my life. It was good, just a strange choice for myself. I loved that the "appetizer of the week" was Deviled Eggs. DEVILED EGGS!! The patio was super nice - very "lush" feeling. I just wish it were bigger because I bet on a nice night it is PACKED.

Good cheap Bloody Mary breakfast. Typical greasy spoon. Service was great.

Well we went to Dicks Bar because our first two had waiting times of 35 minutes to an hour. Not going to happen. So i looked down the hill and saw Dicks. A co-worker had eaten there recently and said it was pretty good so we thought we would give it a try. The decor(?) is unique but that is ok with us. I don't want a coporate clone restaurant feel. The staff was very friendly and helpful and got us seated at a nice table by the window. Our drinks came promptly and correct. (Note: non-Wisconsin natives, like most bars in Cheeseland, Dicks puts an ample pour in their drinks.) The menu is not just bar food as some other reviews have stated. They have walleye, prime rib, steaks etc. along with burgers, wraps and salads. We were in a hurry and just ordered burgers and fries. I had the Jack Daniels burger and my wife had the western burger. The western burger was pretty standard. Basically a bacon cheese with onion rings and bbq sauce. .The Jack burger was ham, mushrooms, asiago cheese and Dick's Jack Daniels sauce. My wife and I agreed it was not the best burger we ever had but it was definitely in the top ten. So, why only three stars? It was the fries. They hand cut their fries but they obviously do not double fry them. So instead of crispy they are a little soggy but still tasty. Will we go back/ You betcha!

Dirty place that has dirty glasses, cockroaches and the service is horrible. I found a live bug in my omelet. The silverware was dirty and the server kept picking their nose. It's a gross place. I almost threw up. Go anywhere but here.

I had the good fortune to eat at Dick's bar of Hudson. This is the kind of places I love to eat. The atmosphere is laid back and the food is great. Greasy spoons and bars tend to have really good food. Dick's is located in down town Hudson, nestled right along the St. Croix river. This bar is just off the main drag though town. The entrance and host station is in the bar. It has that smell that many bars have of stale popcorn and spilled beer. Some may not like that smell, but it brings back memories of great times for me. I took a deep breath as soon as I walked in just to relive some of my wonderful drinking past. I used to have out in bars and clubs a lot. They have a dining room and garden off to the right. Once you enter the dinning room that wonderful bar smell is gone. For me and most people that is a good thing. Although I love the smell of bars, I do not want to eat within the smell. we sat in the dining room with its nice view of the street and garden. The garden looked really cute but it was kind of a warm day and we decided to stay indoor. I ordered a 'Spicy Banana Burger' and Potato Salad. Both were from the specials list and both were fantastic. The 'Spicy Banana Burger was made with grilled banana peppers and cream cheese. I was a little unsure about the cream cheese at first but it was really terrific. They some how cut into a slice. It added a nice freshness to an already good burger. The banana peppers were lightly grilled and served still warm. They were good although I would have caramelized them a little bit more. The Potato Salad was really good. It was obviously made fresh and tasted quite good. It was made with potatoes, eggs and celery for a little crunch. The dressing was a Mayonnaise/mustard base with some spices. It tasted fresh and good. Price: 4 Quality: 4 Taste: 5 Environment: 5 Attitude: 4 Average: 4.4

A real pub that can meet other needs. I like going there for breakfast with friends. The waffles are perfect! And I'll have the Bloody Mary if I am having a more savory breakfast. Beware the Parking Meter Hag who actually waits for someone to pull into a spot in front of the place. A testament to the great Dick's staff, they keep a dish of quarters they hand out to their customers to fend off the Hag. A big downside the the stench of cigarette smoke. There's a third, no-smoking room, but the smoke is there, too. Not for the asthmatic person. I'd give it five stars if Dick's was smoke-free.

Best people watching EVER! We wandered over the border to Dick's after a dinner for a friends birthday recently. It was like taking a step back in time. The music was a good mix of late 90's / early 00's and fun to dance to in a group. Beware: there was nothing short of 5 bachlorette parties there on a random Saturday night. This is what led to the hilarious people watching. The drinks were super cheap and they had Spotted Cow on tap. Works for me!

On a recent Monday when the first choice for a place to have lunch at was closed (because it was Monday), we went to the old standard bar. We sat in the far back area, the only customers in that area and tried having a conversation over the very loud (modern "country") music being played. A little while later, the loud music was then accompanied by some more loud music (Queen, this time - my favorite) coming from another part of the establishment. It quickly became very confusing to my poor brain. I tried not paying attention the the loud overhead country music to just listen to the loud Queen coming from another room, but all in all, it all became jumbled up in my head. It was like trying to listen and pay attention to two different conversations going on: I get nothing out of either one. We decided to share a large plate of nachos and to also have a cup of chili. The chili came with two packets of saltine crackers - standard. The plate of nachos was heaped full. We ate most of them and opted to leave the leftovers there since they were nothing remarkable.

Good pub food at reasonable prices. Daily specials, burger night, chicken in a hubcap and a pretty good Friday night fish fry. This is a typical Wisconsin tavern, noisy, busy & a lot of fun. I'd recommend it.

Flew into Hudson for the funeral of my best friends dad a few years ago, after the loss of my brother only a week before... had some time to kill and found Dicks.. walked in in the morning after a exhausting few days, had a great breakfast and more than one bloody mary, with a beer chaser, something we don't see in Colorado... over the course of the week Dicks kinda became our spot... went in on a Saturday night after another long day and meet the locals... the staff, the locals, the drinks, the whole vibe was just what we needed.... Thank you Dicks and the great people of Hudson.. miss you. Tony from Littleton Colorado

Two recent meals here were so pleasant that I'm bumping my rating to 4 stars. Breakfast--always a strong suit--was improved by the $1.75 bloody marys and a very capable, polite server. When we stopped by for dinner last night, we were impressed by the friendly host and a different, but equally capable and polite server. Food was tasty on both visits--nothing fancy, but properly prepared and portioned. I'm also pleased that Dick's has joined the ranks of the saloons offering Spotted Cow. Moo!

I want to start off by saying that this place gets 5 stars because if is as good as it gets in Hudson, Wisconsin. Hudson, Wisconsin was great! In most of the surrounding towns and residential areas around the St. Croix river, the streets do not even have any lights in them, at all. No street lights, no traffic lights, just darkness (at night). The best thing about Wisconsin is that alcohol there is so cheap! It is cheaper to get completely wasted than to drink good, clean water. "With $20 you can see a movie and go to the hospital for alcohol poisoning" was a common slogan from the locals. We actually met some locals turned friends at Dick's Bar one night who lived in a cornfield. Dicks bar has drink and food specials every day of the week. The bars close at two but serve very large drinks at very cheap prices. Beers were 2 pints for $3 of some really nice and tasty beer. They don't even use 1 ounce shot glasses for liquer and all "shots" are either 3 or 5 dollars for the top shelf stuff like Glenlevit 12. All in all it was a lot of fun, a ton of drinking, and everyone we met was very nice. One afternoon Dicks had $1.75 blood Mary and mojito drinks in large pint glasses. The first night we arrived there it was the "$3.00 for two pints of any of their drought beer" day. The beer and drink selection was great! 4 out of 5 beers were local and/or craft brew. They didn't even serve the popular Miami Florida beers on tap. The shot glass was not a shot glass but instead a whiskys cup. In fact, they didn't even serve any shots in 1 ounce shot glasses at all as I mentioned. The bartenders never measure their liqueur, they simply fill the cup. Terry the bartender once said to me from behind the bar, "These guys don't even care if the food is burnt but they demand their drinks to be strong!" and I believe it! Another great thing about Dick's Bar is the live bands who play several times a week. On one night it was this duo. Lead singer on Djembe and backup singer on guitar. Talented as heck they were. It was some of the best "local" two-man cover group I have ever heard. Another night there was this guy who says he played with Dio in 1985. He was the band before Twisted Sister which came on before Dio. As unbelievable as that sounds, he was tearing it up on the guitar. Face melting jams, and I knew everyone one! He even played a Satriani piece! Pretty impressive musician, he had a headset microphone, and a PA system set up as a karaoke. The guitar and vocals was all him, background came from recorded songs. Everyone in Wisconsin that I met has a completely different accent from down here in Miami, Fl. Locals express themselves with all kinds of "You betchas!" and "Oh yah!" and "Oh for pete!" and "Oofta!". They elongate their vowels, most noticeably their "O's". So to me it was funny but grew on me quickly. For food, Cheddar cheese curds are a really big thing there. Cheese is a big part of the Wisconsin lifestyle. If you utter the words "Fried Cheese Curds" people around you will become hysterical. My brother Rony M. even brought back three bags of cheese curds to Miami, if you can believe that. I am the "Duke" of Dick's Bar

I used to frequent this bar as you can see by my check-in's on a weekly basis. Ownership has changed along with the prices AND the bartenders. I used to feel valued, welcomed and have a great time when sitting here eating, listening to the juke, and bs'ing with the bartenders. The ones you have behind the bar currently are more interested in their own gossip and snarky behavior. I have no interest in drinking or eating here any longer. I have an entire wallet of drink chips collected too. What a shame....

Great food and service. My husband and i were told to try this place by a customer, and we weren't disappointed. The atmosphere was upbeat. The service was excellent and we loved the burgers!! We will be back next year!!

Great service and fun atmosphere! They always have some fun games and activities going on. Good people work here and good people eat/drink here. If a mistake is made (which is rare) they are quick to fix it and turn it around.

According to the CDC, Wisconsin leads the nation in binge drinking, 10 years in a row. Now that's something to be proud of. I was in 'The Hud' for my cousin's wedding and we had just finished breakfast when someone asked -- "Is that a bar sandwiched between two bars, across the street from a couple bars?" "Niet, the one in the middle is a liquor store." Later after visiting the sandbox-sized St. Croix beach and admiring the statue that commemorates the birthplace of the Boy Scouts, I was looking to keep that level of excitement. I ask my cousin-in-law for advice on the local nightlife as I'm researching them on Yelp for iPad. Q: Dibbo's? A. Bikers. Q: Sports Club? A: You'll go days without seeing a woman. Q: Pudge's? A: Bring theme music and a cornerman cuz there's gonna be a fight. Q: Dick's? A: You'll love dicks. I don't know if he was making a recommendation or a prophecy but I decided to give it the old college try. I half expected to be greeted by a sign above the door announcing 'Drinkin' Beer, Shootin' Deer since 1955' but it wasn't country at all. I recognize a dive when I see one. SPIRITS Death's Door Gin: the more something sounds like it's going to bury me in the ground, the more I want to try it. Liquor labeled with poisonous/ radioactive/biohazard warnings seem to have seriously inebriating effects on me. Maybe it's psychosomatic, but this locally distilled liquid was no different. Mad Bird Rum: it has a pink flamingo action figure attached to the bottle and I'm from Florida, I didn't need an excuse. Local Beer: brewed by New Glarus, Grain Belt, and Leinenkugel are better than many craft beers I've had and cheaper than bottled water. Lucky Dog: surprised to see this Brooklyn native on draft so far away from home. They also brew non-alcoholic beer for man's best friend -- pawsitive.com.mt/images/… Beanblossom Hard Cider: comes in apple/blueberry/peach/strawberry and packs a serious 8% ABV punch. My crowning achievement in Hudson was to get a recovering alcoholic to drink one of these because she thought it was pop. In her defense, it does come in a pink bottle with cartoon farm animals all over it. SUPPER Veggie Burger: deep fried with cheddar, onions and marinara sauce? Sounds like something they'd make on My Drunk Kitchen - hartoandco.com/my-drunk-… Big Richard: burger topped with deli-thin ham and Swiss. Served in a hubcap that was probably from a vehicle that had a 'Killin' Bucks, Drivin' Trucks' bumper sticker on it. MUSIC I was making conversation with a truly stunning woman, even by Miami standards, and was wondering why she had decided to wear a Vikings sweatshirt that made her look like purple amoeba, when my cousin who acts about as black as Carlton Banks yelled out -- "Real n****s say word, you ain't never tell no lie." Followed by HYFR by Drake "Don't you love this bar? Are you drunk right now? Will my iPhone ever get service? Do you have any singles? I heard you have hot girls in Miami, is it true? You getting handsy?! You think the family you with, is with you? And I said hell yeah!" Obviously DJ Lancero yelp.com/user_details?us… had taken over the jukebox. Not only that, he was dancing with a girl that until then had been using crutches... Stanky-Legg Lindsay: Cirque du Soleil needs to hire her. She has the extraordinary ability to dance on one leg, seemingly forever, while the other is in an orthopedic cylinder cast. I helped her scratch an itch...by attaching 2 straws to a plastic fork with painter's tape; we were best buddies after that. I don't know what I was going to if my contraption fell apart while it was under her cast though. NO SMOKING My sibling, being accustomed to smoking in bars unknowingly walked inside with a lit cigarette. He immediately turned around and in those two steps was bombarded with warnings and threats. We'll call her 'Heidi' because in Wisco there's a 50% chance that's actually her name, followed him outside and gave him a relentless lecture. He responded to by lighting two more cigarettes and blowing tire sized smoke rings in her face. Don't worry; Heidi got payback by tripping him as he was running back in for last-call. I think they were secretly infatuated with each other. With the exception of Officer/NCO clubs on military bases, it's the cheapest bar I've ever been to and that's without subsidies. 3-4 drinks for $10...in Miami you're lucky if you get one at that price. I heard there's going to be some changes/renovations coming to DBG and I just have one suggestion...a new name...Dick's Club, Members Only.

We come here for the Bavarian Pretzel Sticks. Similar to bread sticks, and when dipped in their melted butter and melted cheese, is one of the best appetizers around.

Went for the fish fry last night. There was a short wait but sat in the restaurant side, a little more quiet. Excellent fish, tasted like never frozen and just a light batter. The fries are cut at the restaurant and you could tell with the first bite they were homemade. Excellent meal would recommend And go back.
