I go with the beef enchiladas and they are delish. I switch it up between corn and flour tortillas but they both do the trick for me. The margaritas are the best and when I say best I mean the strongest put you on your *#& margaritas you can find. My friends and I go here often and it pays off. The owners are great and they reward our patronism with shots of tequilla which I still cant tell if that's a way to keep us around or get us to leave:) Overall, love the atmosphere and love the food!!!

Great chimichanga's, # 31. The folks are very friendly there.

I'm in Delavan many times throughout the year and Hernandez is almost always a must for me. I love their food, prices, and drinks. The owner is a really nice guy and they remember you at this place. My favorite is the #9 carne asada with cheese melted on top! So good!

Used to frequent this restaurant, hadn't been there in several years, so we decided to check it out. Sadly the prices have really gone up and the quality as well as quantity of food has gone down. I had a *large* shrimp chimichanga (not so large)...filled with rice (?), cheese, and minimal shrimp the size of those that come from a can for $10?! The basket of tortilla chips was about 1/3 the size it used to be and comes with three small dishes of salsa, the warm chips were delicious as was the salsa. The guacamole that came with my entree (approx. 2 Tbsp) was delicious as were the beans. The decor hasn't changed at all in their many years of business, divey...wonder what it looks like in the daylight? Disappointed!

Made some changes recently, added some specials to the menu, and they are spectacular. Loved the Chimicurri, and you can't really go wrong with any of the regular food on the menu. Senor and Raph do great work.

For authentic mexican there is nothing better in the area. The food is exceptional, the price is very low for the food quality, and the wait staff are courteous and friendly. It's family owned and they have a small offering of take home items such as sauces, fresh tortilla chips, and alcohol.

The food was horrible!! This could be because our waitress disappeared for an hour after taking our order. She never checked on us to see if we needed anything and their was no reason to have to wait an hour for our food. When our food finally came it was so cold!! I think she forgot to check on us and our order and it was sitting in the kitchen for a long time!! When we told her our food was cold she acted like she didn't care and never offered to bring us new, warm food. The mango margaritas were wonderful but it would have been nice if the waitress checked on us before we got pissed off so that we could have ordered another pitcher!! Your staff reflects on your business and that woman needs to be fired!!

This is the best Mexican restaurant in the Lake Geneva area and one of my favorite Mexican restaurants. One of the best items on the menu is the nachos. One of the best parts of the nachos is the chips because they are home made. The atmosphere is a little divey, but I will always come back for the food.

Garbage. This place is dirty. Walls covered in blankets. Ceiling too I might add. The food is just gross tasting. Brought my husband, son and nephew and we all have never been so disappointed. The wait staff take forever. One customer dumped water on her table and was trying to get someone to help her. She had to get up from her table and walk back into the kitchen to flag someone down. Just bad service and I will never give money to them again. One star is even too much.

For the middle of Wisconsin, we thought the food here was good. Service is slow, and menu is long n confusing, but the vegetarian options, especially enchiladas were solid.

    (4)
  • Dan W.

The enchiladas are delicious and so are the burritos, tacos, chimichangas and tostadas. I've been to Hernandez recently for lunch, dinner and carry-out, and it was excellent every time. I'll keep going often.

  • Deborah F.

The guacamole did not taste fresh. The tex mex enchiladas were way too salty. The service was friendly though.

Solid American version of Mexican at a reasonable price. What we found to be stellar was the capable, friendly and well-coordinated wait staff. Loved the experience. Will be back when we visit the area in the future.

Awful! I'm born and raised in California where Mexican food is absolutely authentic. I'm sorry Wisconsin... But this Mexican food is garbage!

  • Amy O.

We love this place! The homemade chips are awesome! The menu is a little confusing because they list several different cheese enchiladas that sound the same, but I just throw a dart and I am never disappointed. The service is friendly. The margaritas are really strong and a better choice than the wine (which is likely box wine). They don't mind if you get a little rowdy and they surprise you with a fresh delicious cookie on the way out. What is not to love!?!

  • Bill B.

Excellent local Mexican restaurant. Though there are no substitutions (que lastima), there are ample vegetarian options. I enjoyed my Tostadas de Guacamole, tostadas smothered in guac and beans with lettuce, tomato and a goodly sprinkling of cheese on top. It was more like a salad than a traditional tostada but that was very pleasing. My wife got some tasty pork tamales (with enough for the next day) and fine lime daiquiri. Service here is very friendly (it seems to be a family-run place). The room is comfortable and nicely decorated with a neighborhood vibe.

Every time I come here I have a really good experience. The service is always pleasant and the owners are always present and involved. They offer drinks and the prices are good. They also have an outdoor deck and TV's!

Yikes... aye caramba... "Hernandez" has now become a household verb... and not a pretty one. "I just hernandezed my pants..." Service: Slow and the waitress didn't come back for refills, a box... oh and she pronounced menu items incorrectly. Okay, I get that I'm not a native Spanish speakers, but I know my Mexican food pronunciation... Food: BLAND... 3 people used an entire bottle of Cholula hot sauce trying to remedy this... The worst part: Dad went to the bathroom to wash his hands after dinner and found the cook leaning against the wall almost passed out really sick... yea we had finished our food already... Maybe the sick cook was the reason we all had severe gastrointestinal issues (the shits... correction the hernendezs) for days. One almost didn't make it home before a major hernandez needed to be done...

  • Carole R.

Crispy home-made chips (good, but hot salsa - green & red) for complimentary starters. We each had a shrimp dish, mine was a bit too sweet for my tastes (tequila shrimp) my SOs dish was good (Mexican shrimp). I was craving deep fried ice cream, but I was disappointed by the (what appeared to be corn flake) crust. Complimentary cookies were given with the bill. Beware the margaritas are STRONG. Friendly & fast service.

I don't usually eat Mexican food in Wisconsin, but when I do, it's at Hernandez. The food, the decor, and the owners are charmers. Hernandez has been a community staple in this small Wisconsin town for 34 years. I grew up with special trips to Hernandez just for the chimichangas if I promised to sit still and quiet during my dentist's appointments. It didn't disappoint then, and it still delivers the goods now! My usual menu: - They do traditional and specialty margaritas. A regular size will do you fine, but if you want to go all out fiesta, they have GRANDE sizes that are ridiculous sized. - Crazy decadent nachos. Get them with everything. - Like I said, I always go for the chimichangas. Go for trio, which features three small chimis filled with chicken, beef, and cheese. Okay, so they are more Arizona than Mexico, but who cares? They are delicious! - Fried ice cream is a nice treat for the end of the night. With that, you have eaten enough fat, sugar, carbs, and tequila to last you for a week. But it was worth it, wasn't it?

  • Bea M.

Always good food! Sauteed garlic shrimp is always the best!

  • Marianna S.

If you've had real Mexican food, you'll know that this place is mediocre at best. We had tacos and they were extremely bland with no real flavor or spice. But we didn't get sick after eating, the chips were warm and tasty, and the service was fine. Keep in mind, you're probably not going to find great Mexican food in small town Wisconsin... but this place is okay. Just nothing delicious or special or authentic.

  • Kyle H.

Been here once and I would not EVER plan to come back . Terrible food . I'll take my Taco Bell Any day they can keep their "authentic" Mexican food .

I heart Hernandez's! Any local will tell you it's one of the best Mexican food restaurants in the area, with a very large selection. The margaritas are strong and tasty. And, the best part, you can order them by the pitcher! The owners are always there, in a good mood, and looking to make sure you have a good time. Ask for the mild salsa to go with your chips. The flavor is delish. Again, this is another case where I wish Yelp had a half star system--they deserve a 4.5 rating!

  • Jon P.

Yeah, it has a Mexican name, but this is not very authentic. I live in Mexico except for about 7-8 weeks when we come back to visit family and friends and I know good Mexican food. This is gringo "Mexican" food. More like Tex-Mex or Taco Bell. Too greasy. Too much cheese. No flavor. Ground beef tacos with generic seasoning are not Mexican...neither are chimichangas. And the prices are way too high. There are much better authentic Mexican restaurants in the area for me to go here.

Love the homemade chips, fresh salsas, and flavorful food. My family has been dining at Hernandez over 20 years and we highly recommend it to all our friends when they are in town. Stopped in today and was amazed by the remodeling that has taken place. Hernandez was voted best Mexican Restaurant of Walworth County 2014.

Muy bien! Free chips and salsa were good. Be sure and ask about spice ness before you dig in. Chimichanga combo was tasty but a little dry. Chicken with cilantro and parsley marinade were awesome. Portions were generous and service was good. Liked the kitschy atmosphere. Reasonably priced and lots of tequila to pick from.

Heard that this was a great place so we went there for lunch. Chips were good and fresh even though they only give you a handful in the basket. Salsa was just ok. Then lunch came, we ordered tacos, enchiladas, chimichungas, nachos, quesdilla. The food was god awful.....we have no idea who posted these nice comments as this was the worst mexican food I have ever had in my life. Not one of the 5 of us like the food.

I have dined in at Hernandez Mexican Restaurant before. It is a great place for families to dine at. The food is as expected & the workers are friendly. The decor is very typical for a Mexican restaurant- the pinatas hanging are also available to purchase. There is a large selection of tequila displayed as soon as you walk in. They also have cookies, chips & other authentic items to be purchased. Recently I ordered the taco dinner to go -it didn't take long, it's affordable, and fills you up.

I have been going to Hernandez for 20 years. No one leaves hungry. The critics say it isn't "authentic" Mexican- thank goodness. They take advantage of being in the Dairy State- lots of cheeses and sour cream in some entrees. I have brought people in from Texas, California, and Mexico, and they raved about the food. On 2 occasions the Texans actually guessed within 7 miles of where the Hernandez family was located in Mexico because of the recipes they use- can't get more authentic than that! If you want authentic, and you love chocolate- order the Mole' entrees. Also remember, over 90% of their customers are not Hispanic, and they are not out to see how spicy-hot they can make something. However, if you want hot, add their salsa that looks like a variety of veggies- it has been known to cause people to cry- seriously. This restaurant is a pleasant surprise in a part of the country that you wouldn't expect to find a good Mexican restaurant.

This is easily the best Mexican food you'll find within 30 miles of Lake Geneva. My family comes down here all the way from Whitewater. My mom loves the tostadas, but my personal favorite are the chimichangos, which I consider the finest in the world. Damn...I'm craving them right now big time. Best part is the ridiculously low prices, which is dirt cheap even by WI standards. My three chimis here ran $7.25. I can't even get a burrito in SF for that little.

  • David M.

Best mexican food around the lakes area....and great / friendly service as well....as usual, at a mexican restaurant, they have long, great menu....hard to pick a bad meal.....great, limited-less chips and salsa as well....do come prepared to wait, some, on weekend evenings in the summer...you can pass the time asking the owner about the time Tony Romo and his girl friend dujour came by......a big deal for Delevan!! We are semi-regulars....you will be too if you live in the lakes area... April 2014 update.....place entirely redone in past month or so....opened up...some draft beers now...very well done!

We have been going to Hernandez for years and love the food, the fun and the Hernandez family. Raph the owner and the waitress are great and they are always able to accommodate a large group. You can also pick up food and take it home which we do on occasion. Usually we drive up at least once over the winter to rent a hotel room since our lake house in not year round play in town and eat Hernandez. Their pitchers of magaritas are only like $20, and they have the best chips to take home.

Today I ate lunch at Hernandez Mexican Restaurant after seeing the Yelp reviews. The staff was friendly and attentive and brought us water and warm tortilla chips and salsa shortly after we sat down. The decor is a little dusty-divey, but not bad. I ordered the quesadillas, not something I typically order when I eat out, but for some reason they just sounded good. The tortillas seemed homemade and the guacamole was really good. I was not a fan of the beans or rice but that is probably just my taste pallet. Overall, I thought it was adequate, but nothing to write home to mom about.

We haven't had authenic Mexican food since moving to the area (other than from our generous neighbors :). We stopped here trusting a few reviews and loved it. The sarapes create a relaxing atmosphere and the staff was very friendly. After a cold day hiking, I ordered a hot chocolate. Wow. They put all others to shame. This was the best cocoa I've ever tasted. Our appetizer arrived with our meal, which was a lot of food for our two person table. Either way, we had a great feast with more to spare. Great food. We'll definitely be back!

  • Brian G.

The armada of Yu-Gi-Oh! pinatas is only outnumbered by the sarapes per square foot in Hernandez El Sarape. Sarapes on the ceiling. Sarapes on the walls. It feels like a homemade fort you used to make as a kid from couch cushions only the cushions are replaced with brightly colored sarapes and there's awesome little Mexican kids running all over. (Clearly--and unfortunately--I'm from the suburbs.) Besides the fun, familial atmosphere and the almost-assuredly-peyote-inspired decor, the food at Hernandez is top notch. Four different types of salsa accompanied our chips, and the chiles rellenos I had were perfect. Call me parochial if you will but I'm still not sure what to do with the tortillas that accompany my Mexican meals. Of course this doesn't stop me from pretending to think for a minute before deciding I want to waste corn instead of flour tortillas when I order. As if the above weren't enough, we were given two cookies gratis, and our bill was hardly north of sixteen dollars. All in all, a pleasant, unexpected, fiscally responsible, Mexican gustatory blitz in Delavan, Wisconsin.

All of their food is really great and so is their service but times the food takes a long time to get out.

For authentic mexican there is nothing better in the area. The food is exceptional, the price is very low for the food quality, and the wait staff are courteous and friendly. It's family owned and they have a small offering of take home items such as sauces, fresh tortilla chips, and alcohol.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
