When they said they had a Wednesday night steak special for $7, I laughed and said it must be made out of shoe leather. To my surprise, my wife ordered it, and to my larger surprise it was delicious! So was the mushroom burger I ordered and the cheese curds the kids got. The atmosphere was fun, with several games and a nice beer selection, and our waitress/bartender was fantastic. A great find in the north woods!

The Big Dipper

11435 Cty Hwy X
Crivitz, 54114
Reviews:
A roadside stand with really nice outdoor seating and six big tables indoor, Big Dipper is the only ice cream shop around - so thank goodness it's a good one! A notch above standard roadside fare, they make a pretty fair double cheeseburger alongside other expected kid-friendly menu items. Ice cream is Cedar Crest, served in big portions in about 20 flavors. Frequented by locals and tourists alike, it's definitely worth a stop if you're in the area. The five stars, though, is for the people. Beyond friendly, though they were that and plenty, we had a car break down in the parking lot. The grillman first took advantage of a break in the crowd to come take a look at it with us. When the wrecker took its time, they kept our open for us an extra half hour so we weren't carried off by mosquitoes. Then the guy took the trouble of driving us back into Crivitz, out of his way. AND THEN he found my wife, lost and waiting for us at the wrong garage, to point her to where we were. Good people are out there; they're working at Big Dipper.

The owner is very pleasant and caring about the quality of the restaurant, I was impressed when he was very intent on making sure the coffee was just right for everyone since they were testing something out. Some owners would wait for someone to complain instead of offer free cups to test out and give your opinion. The food and selection has been wonderful each time that I have given it a shot. I highly recommend the Italian sandwich, it's normally served as a cold sandwich but if you ask them to make it hot they will toast the bread and heat the meat! I hope yall enjoy it as much as I did, it's a great place for me to take a break from a busy work day, I hope it becomes your place of solace too :)

I love Rene's and have been dinning here for years. The tenderloin will never let you down and the salad bar is more than enough. They have a full bar so wine, beer, and liquor are all options. Frog legs are good as well. Always fun at the family friendly establishment.
Great fine dining supper club!! I have been coming here for years and would love to give the 5 stars, but my recent visit was not the usual Rene's perfection. I love this place and it is a must go to anytime you're near high falls! Like up north supper clubs, you order at the bar. Enjoy a cocktail or two while you wait. When you're called to your table, enjoy the luscious salad bar with home made soup! Salad bar has usual toppings and cheeses, several salad and awesome crouton bread. You get a loaf of bread brought to you as well. I always have the steak combo with battered walleye. Their steaks are buttery and delicious. (Mine was way under cooked, and I did have to send it back- never have had to do that before, so I'll chalk it up to a mix up, hence the 4 star) I will be back next time I'm here, so next month, and the following and the next month too!
Loved the beef barley soup and the broiled chicken. The real vegetables on the salad bar were refreshing, too. The kids loved the food and so did my wife and I.

Absolutely the best pizza North of Green Bay- home made crust and fresh toppings! We go out of our way to eat at Hot Stone Pub.
Driving home from the UP and we were very pleased with the experience. The service was fast and the pizza was fantastic. The mozzarella sticks were home made and a wonderful starter. My fifteen year son ordered the meatball sandwich and could not finish it. It was a very large portion and he said it was awesome. High compliment from a teenager. Highly recommend this establishment.
We started our meal with the mozzarella sticks. They were homemade and delicious--even the marinara sauce was fabulous! I got the cheeseburger, which was cooked and seasoned very well; it was one of the best burgers I've ever had-- a little greasy but not overly greasy. The buttered bun was light and had a little crispness to the outside. My boyfriend ordered the meat lovers pizza and we found out why they boast about their homemade pizzas. From the crust, to the sauce, to the toppings, everything was superb. Prices were very reasonable, the staff was friendly, and the atmosphere was comfortable and clean. We will definitely stop here again and will recommend to friends.

Yet another great place that I've been coming to for years. And that's nothing...I was with my great aunt and great uncle, and they said they had been coming for 60 years or so. 60 years...if that's not a testament to their chicken, I don't know what is. Most recently, we came about 2:30pm on a Sunday during a Packers game, and the place was dead (but was packed by the time we left, so clearly people came post-game). The ordering is different, but in a good way - grab a seat near the bar (not in the dining room), order some drinks, and order some food. When it's ready, they'll tell you a table to go to. We sat for about 20 minutes with drinks before ordering food, at which time the kids played outside and the adults played inside, enjoying the fall colors and beautiful river view. It never gets old... I'm not a huge chicken fan, but you don't dare get anything else here (not that there is much else on the menu). I got the "regular' dinner, a mix of white and dark meat, with cole slaw, french fries, and I also did a side of gizzards. The gizzards themselves were not fried, which was a bit of a surprise to me, but appeared to be sauteed instead. Maybe you can get them fried if you ask? They were delicious nonetheless. As were the "real" pieces of chicken - 3 giant pieces to be exact, of which I somehow managed to force two of them down before I was so full that I thought I would explode. Combine that with their fantastic cole slaw, tasty crinkle fries, and the always solid relish tray. And finish with cookies...because why not. AND all with that view. So let's summarize: Basically an entire chicken, with fries/baked, cole slaw, relish tray, and cookies...for like $14. With a view. Shaffer's is great. One thing - my aunt said that they re-use the oil, so coming earlier is better. Not sure if that's true or not, but after 60 years, I'd believe her. That's why we came so early.
Just an update to let everyone know that the Shaffer Park Supper Club burned down several weeks ago, probably from a lightening strike. We stayed at the hotel and I saw the building surrounded by yellow do not cross tape and stopped by and asked about any rebuilding plans - unknown. I have heard that the chicken here was good. Since the building burned I didn't know what to rate it?
I was introduced to Shaffer's by one of my friends whose family has been going to Crivitz for generations. Sadly, I missed our annual trip up there this weekend and my stomach is lonely because of it. I've got to agree with the first poster as they pretty much nailed the description. The jukebox is very 1980 radio. The drinks are fairly potent and the wait for a table forces you to consume a few of them. But most importantly: the chicken and gizzards rule. Up until having Shaffer's fried chicken, a Harold's on the far south side of Chicago was my favorite. Now I'm forced to drive 4.5 hours for my preferred fried chicken. Friends suck.

We go to Tommy's for lunch on our annual weekend Up North. The food is delicious and not deep fried. The menu is limited, but the food is all cooked to order. The chicken sandwich and fries is my favorite! The spicy fries are so good! I look forward to our next visit up north!

This place has a working Jukebox which is very cool. The music is loud enough where you definitely feel responsible for the music you play - especially when you've had a few of their $2.75 beers and accidentally play a really depressing Tim McGraw song by pushing the wrong button. The atmosphere is typical of an up north bar. They have vending machines for tattoos and such for the kids, a pool table smack in the middle of the dining area, and a pretty large/cool wooden patio. My friend convinced me to get the Thunder Burger (which was $8.75) vs a Cheeseburger which was $4.50. The burger was so-so, not terrible, not amazing. I found it very odd that they charged .25 for lettuce and .25 for tomato. I guess up north you're punsihed for trying to be healthy. Either way, this is a cool joint to kick back and throw a few back while watching the game, or crankin the jukebox - but I wouldn't advise this is the spot you should have a meal at, unless you hate veggies.
