I have been to several Mexican restaurants over the years, and Jose's Blue Sombrero is one of the best that I've been to. The service is top notch, and the food & margaritas are fantastic. They have a lovely outdoor patio to enjoy during the summer months. If you are a guacamole lover (like I am), then I highly recommend getting the tableside guacamole. They will literally make it right at your table, and they will make it to your liking. The menu contains mostly Mexican fare. However, they also have a "Spanglish" menu, which contains a burger, chicken, a pasta dish, and a New York strip steak. I saw several things on the menu on my most recent visit that I need to try in the future. At the top if that list is the Blue Lobster. It is a flour tortilla that contains lobster, cream sauce, black beans, cilantro, spinach, and chihuahua & monterey jack cheese. I am getting hungry just typing about it!

Average at best. Nothing exciting. Table side guacamole looked interesting but we were worried about the temperature of the ingredients after sitting out. Free taco bar during happy hour is another cool idea but we had the same concerns about food temp. Our salsa tasted like salt and was watered down. Decided to finish our 1st drink and head out.

I won't say it is authentic Mexican food because it is not; but my favorite thing here is the table side Guacamole I order this every time I'm there and that is every week. The drinks are good only one of my favorite bartenders are left :( It is funny how I see the reviews people write and they talk about how disgusting the food is when its not that bad and it is reasonably priced. Next time you are there order the Table side Guacamole it is fresh and delicious :)

Jose's has a good selection of Latin cuisine and Spanglish items. With both indoor and outdoor seating. They are closed on Sundays. If you like margaritas this is a place for you. They offer a wide selection of flavored margaritas to include the traditional lime. Also offered for the brave or to share is a half gallon margarita. You ask how much? Well for $15, you will be served a half gallon of margarita with your choice of flavor. Whoops, I almost forgot about the food. I have yet to have anything I didn't like. The food is always served hot, and with a smile.

I was there this past weekend and I had high hopes when I got to the restaurant. The outside of the restaurant had nice appeal and they have a nice patio area for outdoor eating. The inside is decorated nicely and the hostess was friendly and seated us right away. The menu looked very promising. I can't say that it is authentic Mexican food since a Korean taco was on the menu, The drink menu sounded fantastic. We brought waters and chips and salsa. Our server took our drink menu, my bf ordered a spicy margarita and I ordered the Tornado, swirl sangria/Rita. Our drinks very good and my boyfriend enjoyed the salsa. We ordered out of the special of the day menu and I got the carnita tacos. I have to say I'm not sure if I liked them or not. The flavor of the sauce was good but the meat was kind of dry and hard. The beans were alright and the rice was just meh. My boyfriend got some sort of tacos, I don't remember which ones but I think it was seafood, and he said they were just ok, nothing special, he did find them dry so he asked for sauce and the only type of sauce they had was the salsa for the chips and green sauce. The server said she mixed both of them together and called it her special concoction. It made the dryness of the taco go away but still just ok tacos. I was in from out of town, if I was ever in that area I would give them another shot. The restaurant is nice, nice staff, drinks were good, good ambiance, the food didn't wow me but I'd give them another try. The guac looked delicious!

Hey! Want over priced food? Awesome, you're in the right place. I got these Korean street tacos that said it came with a bunch of crispy toppings and it didn't. What came out were 2 mini tacos with cabbage. For 12 bucks. I couldn't believe that was all you got. To be fair, they were good. The short rib was nice and tender. But not for $6 a piece. Don't come here. Just don't.

Really, really good food. They have totally changed the menu since we were last here about a year ago. Great crowd at 9PM which is a bit unusual for Brookfield. Great guacamole made table side. The free salsa was outstanding. Not the generic Mexican Restaurant stuff. The shrimp and steak burrito surprised me by how small it was. Small burrito but awesome flavor and I am perfectly full. I would definitely come back and come back soon.

Traveling for work. Thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality of this family restaurant last night. The menu listed all the authentic Mexican food with a guac table side to die for!

Popular, fun, clean environment with friendly staff. Food is good, but a bit pricey for what you get... especially when you are so close to so many great Waukesha Mexican places. Most entrees are $9.50 and up. I have been there three times and ordered: fajitas (twice), table-side guacamole (twice), and most recently, flautas for uno (good, small appetizer).

We had a very pleasant experience here. It's not the most amazing Mexican food I've had, but still delicious! Table side guac - good, but I wouldn't necessarily get it again. Bulgogi street tacos - DELICIOUS! Flavors were really great! Austin TX street Gaucho tacos - also very good! I'd order these again! The service and ambience were both great! I'll happily return if I have a taco craving!

Had the Fajita taco salad and it was meh. Liked the margaritas and table side guacamole!

The chips are always fresh and warm. The salsa is flavorful but couldn't used a pinch of salt and spice. I had the tableside guacamole in medium and it is definitely in my top 3 favorite guacamoles! For my entree, I had a bowl of the shrimp soup. They are very, very generous with the shrimp and the onions, tomatoes, peppers, and cilantro were fresh and fulfilling. The only reason I didn't give my experience 5 stars was because service was extremely slow. To the point where we had to flag down other waiters to get ours to come.

Chips and salsa were good. Had one of worse meals ever. Taco S were terrible. Will be last time dinning here.

Little pricy bit good unique Mexican food. I got the bulgolgi tacos. We will have to splurge on the table guac next time..... Made me sick later :/

The chicken in my burrito was tough. Others at my table don't like their food. I Won't recommend this place.

Great food and margaritas! Service has always been good. If you're going for diner on a Friday or Saturday plan ahead as you'll likely need to wait. Which is only a tribute to the restaurants popularity. Table side guacamole is fantastic!

Chancery does Mexican Jose's shines on this corner of Brookfield strip mall blight. Always busy, your best bet is to get here early to get good service. Upon being seated we were immediately presented with a heaping bowl of crispy warm chips with a side of brown looking salsa. Drinks options are aplenty (Coke products) and they even offer a half-gallon margarita for sharing! Being Chacer-ish, the menu's got funny names like "Andy the Gringo Rides Again" for your common burrito. I opted for three pork tostadas - each had a nice heaping of lettuce, onion, tomato and cheese with a mound of sour cream on the side. The included rice and beans had good favor as well. After devouring the bowl of chips I couldn't down the third tostada. It's definitely a great spot to come with a small group and have a good time. Again, get here early, it will be less noisy and you don't have to wait!

Here for a birthday celebration. Cool decor /vibe. Started out at the bar very basic margarita. Not strong enough for my taste . Hubby had jalepeno marg, much better choice. Very accommodating waitstaff as our party was over a hour late. I had bulgogi tacos decidedly better than bel air ! People yes it is a little over priced and no it's not authentic. For that get to the southside or a taco truck. But if you need some mexi that is family friendly check it out.

  • Linstal F.

The food was absolutely disgusting. It was bland and had no flavor. We should have known when we had to add hot sauce to the salsa, just to have some flavor. I had enchiladas. It was basically tomato paste, chicken, and cheese. By far, the worst Mexican restaurant in the Waukesha area. I would have given it zero stars if I could have. The service was slow, but the food was done suspiciously fast. I'm betting it was just warmed up and not cooked to order. On top of all this, I am pretty sure I got food poisoning because I ended up puking all night after eating there. I will never eat there again. I recommend anyone who is reading this to do the same. Take your money elsewhere.

Food is delicious. They have an extensive gluten free menu. Oh yeah.....they have a drink called the "Latin Love", which is delicious! Nuf said!

The salsa here at first glance does not look too appetizing, but I finished half the bowl by the time the mister finally arrived. Was disappointed that they only had happy hour in the bar :( but I had a margarita and it was pretty good, wish it was stronger :) Had the Andy gringo something with shredded beef, and the mister had a pork chimichanga. Did enjoy the food but it didn't make an impression like I'm going to be coming back here all the time, but would definitely give it another go. And the wait staff was nice, except we were sitting next to one of the cash registers and they kept slamming the cabinets. OH, and the prices are a little bit expensive for my taste, and don't let them trick you into their fresh guacamole $9, even if they do make it for you on the rolling carts, and the sour cream $1. Yup. Just so you know.

I kept flipping between three and four stars. As with everyone else, I loved the guacamole. Super fresh, made tableside to order. I also loved the various options available for tacos. Not your standard options. I opted for the vietnamese bahn mai tacos. Good flavor, but I expected a little more intensity. The service was okay. They seemed a little flustered by our group of eight initially although we did have a reservation. The margarita was awesome!

I tried the seafood burrito due to the recommendations of my coworkers. I've been going here for almost 4 years and I've never ordered anything else. Why fix something that isn't broken? I also like that the manager makes it a point to check on our meal each time we go. Not because we know him, but because he cares enough to ask.

A rather mediocre place. When you go to the restroom. The Spanish translation audio can be rather distracting.

Over the past year, the quality of food has gone down a little, but Blue Sombrero is still pretty good. The table-side guac is really what we come here for and is never a let-down. The lunch menu isn't the best, so order off of the main menu. Most of the food is great and typical of a good Mexican restaurant. The atmosphere is fun and the staff is friendly.

  • Tim D.

Over the past year and a half been to the Blue Sombreo a handful of times. Last time the quality of the food and service had dropped. How hard is it to cook decent Mexican cuisine? Average service, average food, not worth the price..

  • Josh S.

It seemed from a lot of the previous reviews like Jose's has some troubles with service and middling entrees, but that the guacamole and other appetizers are good. That's not too far off from our experience there tonight. We thought the service was okay, except that the wait was a good deal longer than we were told it would be. The food, however, was about what we heard. The steak tacos I ordered were bland. My wife's tacos al pastor were a bit better, but not much. But the guacamole was great. Especially the smoked trout and bacon guacamole.

The wonder bread of "Mexican" food. If you thought Chi-Chi's was good Mexican food then this place is for you. The one saving grace is the guacamole. It is made at your table and is quite good. The other food, however, was uniformly bland and unexciting. This is white, suburban dumbed-down Mexican food. The menu descriptions, complete with various spelling and grammatical errors, proved to be misleading. They sounded exciting but the dishes were anything but. The chipotle chicken and shrimp for example, was a chicken breast pounded flat that was broiled then covered with a white cream sauce and three tiny shrimp. The sauce was flavorless despite the promise of chipotle. It was served with out-of-the can refried beans and some rice (no tortillas). About the only thing Mexican at this place was the wait staff. Perhaps they should put one of them in charge of the menu. Oh, and I'm not sure if anyone else sees the irony in a Romney/Ryan sign as big as my car out in front of a Mexican restaurant but I myself find it very inappropriate for business, particularly of this type.

Not sure where folks are getting the rave reviews at? Food was good but nothing to rave about. (Consider I've visited no less than 100+ similar Mexican restruaunts) I to felt there was lack of management or something as the food could be incredible and the wait staff would be more motivated. Check arrives at table and 18 mins later we had to find our waiter in order to pay our bill..? Interesting angle on customer service as 4 employees were sitting and talking while other customers waited. Food - good / interesting dishes Service - not so good Return - prob not - there are much better places for the $$

I went here with my family for dinner one night and I was pretty excited to try this place to be honest. I was pretty much starving at the time we were seated so I was excited to eat ! I ordered shredded beef enchiladas a side of guacamole and a strawberry Margarita. The waitress was nice and brought chips and salsa....well what I thought was salsa it more looked like a green slop which didn't taste very good at all, which made me nervous to get the food if the salsa wasn't even decent. First off the guacamole was fantastic I'll give them that, it's made fresh right in front of you which I thought was cool . On the other hand my enchiladas were horrible. I'm not a great cook and I could have made better. It tasted very generic nothing exciting and honestly reminded me of taco bell. The tortillas that the enchiladas were in were half hard and stale on the edges which I was shocked by because I've never had that experience before. And lastly, I thought that at least I have a drink but oh was I wrong. The first sip I took of the magarita I almost choked on how sugary it was and I didn't taste even a hint of tequila. The consistency of the magarita was all wrong it was all watery and tasted weird. Overall if you want over priced generic Mexican food then this is the place to go. Will not ever be returning.

Our party was 3 adults and a baby. We came in early 5:00 were seated very quickly given a table with water and chips and salsa. We were waiting for another person but the host did not communicate to the waitstaff that we were in the back room next to the restroom Grrr. The wait was not too long but the people that came after us had a 30 minute wait till someone came and asked if they have taken their orders. just like they did to us. The chips were warm and crispy. The salsa was a little lame for my taste one person felt that it was good enough. They had a green salsa with more heat that was better in our opinion. The decorations were real nice the music was lively and up beat. Our server was very attentive and patient. The food that came out very quickly ofter she put the order into the computer. I had the Jorge, which was 3 chicken tacos hot and tasty with good flavor with 3 types of tacos flour hard and soft corn as she recommended. The rice was not very warm at all. None of us came down with food poisoning later and no gigantic centipedes crawled in our view. My sister had a burrito and guacamole with a margarita. Overall we were all satisfied with our meals and service. Since it was 4th of May our server gave us 3 bags of Chips and 3 containers of salsa to celebrate Cinco De Mayo! Ole! The Bar seems to have a good crowd at around 5:45.

This place will always be known in my circle of friends as "Joe's Blue Hat Restaurant." It used to be a favorite but now it's kind of hit or miss. The Racine location was the first one I visited way back in the day, and it was all divey looking and my girlfriends and I would drink slurpy margaritas by the pitcher and eat guac until we couldn't see straight. (The Racine location is still the best, in my opinion). The Brookfield location feels like...Brookfield. It's too sterile, too Appleebeezy, and too much everything. The service is usually pretty good, but depending on when you come, the food may or not be great. Earlier is usually better, as it seems by the end of the night, they have all kind of given up and are ready for people to get the heck out of their restaurant. It's a place we will continue to go to, when the mood strikes, but I feel like it has lost so much of it's original charm and gritty authenticity, which is what made it so awesome in the first place. And now with a third location? Time will tell...

Your experience will depend upon what you order. Their table side guacamole is outstanding, probably the best I've had. Their Dakota's Seafood burrito (it's actually an enchilada) is also super tasty. On the other hand, their shrimp soup is not good. Unlike shrimp cocktail entrees at other restaurants, this is served warm and is made with a watery base instead of a tomato base. There was no cilantro or lime, and the avocados were smashed up. The salsa that comes with the complimentary chips is very salty, and is not very flavorful.

  • L H.

The food is actually pretty good here. They have more than just typical Mexican dishes. The table side guacamole is very tasty as well. They are not open on Sundays which is a bit of a bummer. The little cookies they bring with the check are really tasty.

I've been here twice this year and both times were disappointing. The first time, the server threw the pitcher on the table and ran away without giving us cups. He was absent for most of the meal, which was okay but not great. Parts of it were good, parts of it were mushy. But he was never there until he dropped off the check. Time #2. Different server. Same routine. Disappeared for so long we thought we would never order. Same thing with the water except we got glasses. Food was delivered by someone else and we saw the waiter again right before we were done eating, then again much later to drop off the check. Both times it was moderately busy. Not packed, no wait. We won't come again.

I have to admit I'm surprised that Jose's only has 3 stars. I've been to Jose's about a dozen or so times in the last five years, and I can't remember ever being disappointed. Maybe I've just gotten lucky, but I've always had at least decent service here, and in fact usually I get great service! The atmosphere is great, though on very busy nights it can get a little bit loud. I'm the type of person who orders the same thing every time I go to a restaurant - I used to always get the steak and portabella quesadillas, but now my usual is the blue lobster burritos. I'd recommend both of these items, especially if you're not a big fan of spicy food. And of course, I always get table side guacamole, which is so fresh and delicious. Overall I love Jose's and never pass up an opportunity to go!

We stopped here on the way to Madison From Milwaukee. Being from Arizona where I can authentic Mexican food anytime of day I should not have expected much but this was worse than expected. To start with after we were seated we sat for 10 -15 minutes before we were even offered a drink the service was not good by any stretch of the imagination and while waiting for out check we had the honor of listening to out waitress talk about her children to the people at the table next to us who were apparently a quaint ancestors of hers. As far as the food is concerned I cannot describe the taco meat as anything more than inedible I also ordered a "pork" chimichanga there was very little pork and it was mostly beans... speaking of beans the only preparation that went into them was opening the can and a box of Spanish rice-a - roni would have been better I do not recommend this place at all. Your much better off to go to Taco Bell.

  • Hion L.

The best thing to get here is probably the guacamole which is made fresh at your table. Other than that, it is pretty much what you would expect of big Mexican food chains such as Chevys or El Torito - not great, but not horrible either. It is one of those places that if you find yourself gorging on the free chips, you don't necessarily have regrets when the entree comes out. I give the place 3 stars based upon a Wisconsin curve, considering the lack of much competition.

Went here with visiting relatives and had a great dinner! When arriving at 6 pm, I was told it would be an hour wait for 4 to be seated. The bar and entryway was so crowded we were jostled a lot as people came in and out and tried to squeeze by to the bathrooms. But the wait only ended up being 40 minutes. Chips and salsa were waiting on the table when we sat down. I would say the salsa was mild with a little kick. Nothing to make you tear up (unfortunately). The chip bowl was never empty the entire meal, because they were so prompt with the refills. The make-at-the-table guacamole was excellent! We ordered a pitcher of the classic margarita. It came with a pitcher of margarita and a pitcher of ice so that it wouldn't be watered down by the time we were on glass 2 - great idea! The actual margarita was ok - I've certainly had better, but it wasn't horrible and it certainly had fair amount of alcohol in it. The price for a pitcher was more than I expected for what we got, but not insane. I ordered a shrimp/bean dish - forget the exact name of it - and it was excellent. Jerk tacos were good too.

Went here with the extended family and had a great time. Drinks, salsa and fresh guac were excellent. Fish tacos were also very good (Walleye). I appreciate the nod to your Wisconsin roots doing Walleye, rather than trying to pretend that Tilapia was the fresh catch. Excellent choice

Today, I went to Jose's for the first and last time. The server was slow. We had to ask for refills of drinks twice and more Salsa with chips twice. When he brought the food. He put the plates on the table and walked away. Had to call him back for service. It was not b usy at all. The server seemed put out to wait in us. The food and restaurant was great. The Salsa was very good too. We ate at the Bluemound location. We entertain 4 days a week at Bluemound restarants. Too bad this guy works there.

Went for dinner tonight. Front of house was completely disorganized and very very rude. I get that exact table times are hard to predict but you can't tell people it'll be 20 minutes then 30 minutes late say you don't know when the table will be available because "people leave when they leave." Also it's rude to speak in Spanish to the other front of house people after you've been asked a question in English.

  • Jane S.

Mediocre. I order the mushroom tacos from their highlighted specialty menu and the sauce on top was cold, obviously poured out from a can and not cooked with the rest of the tacos. Our server Chris, was excellent but that was only after we had 2 horrible servers, one was ending her shift and another who just seemed in her job. Chris made the night, top notch waiter. The margaritas were horrible-way way too sweet and artificial tasting. I do not understand why this place was so packed though, nothing about it was more then slightly above acceptable. For better mexican and margaritas, we'll head elsewhere-and hopefully see Chris in a better restaurant!

Food is consistently good. Awesome happy-hour specials. The El Tornado margarita is amazing! Table-side guac is excellent. If you're looking to grab a drink after work near Brookfield/Waukesha, Jose's is the place to go.

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! Do NOT recommend based on front of house being rude, disorganized, and incompetent. I have been to this restaurant many times with good experiences but tonight was a disaster! It spoiled every good experience. Horrible front staff ruined the entire place. I called to make a reservation which was taken by whomever worked the front of the house. I get there at 6pm at reservation time and was told it'll be 20 minutes. I said I have a reservation for 6pm. "We don't take reservations." Well that should have been a sign for me to leave but 20 minutes isn't that bad a wait so I stayed. We waited and couldn't get a drink at the bar because it was packed. 25 minutes pass no call for our table. I go over to check how long it's going to be I'm told we are the next table. I ask how long it will be and the response "we don't know whenever they leave." I was floored. I asked to speak to manager. That took 6 minutes. I was able to see how utterly disorganized the front of the house was with 4 different sheets of names all half full with 3 different people trying to read them crossing out names without any clear order. Btws, they called 2 other tables while I was waiting so clearly I wasn't the next table to be called. When the manager finally showed up the woman at the front of the house spoke to him in Spanish and gestures at me and the list repeatedly. Not ok. At all. Then I finally got to speak to the manger and rather than looking at me he took out his phone and then looked at the list. I had to ask him to at least pretend to pay attention. I left immediately after speaking with the manager and telling him how disorganized his front of the house was. No apology. Instead, he said "I can get you the next table when they leave." I left. Not a chance I would be eating there.

I wasn't expecting greatness after reading some of the Yelp reviews, and me being a little biased and picky about Mexican restaurants, but overall the food and experience at Jose's Blue Sombrero was A-OK and deserves a full 3 stars. Early Friday night dinner, about 5:30 we were seated immediately, can't say the same for those that arrived while we were leaving, it looked like there was a wait starting. Service was very good, the Chip boy had our chips and salsa on our table in less than 30 seconds after we sat down. Chips were traditional, salsa for me was just ok, not spicy and had a little too much roasted/smokey flavor to it. We typically do order the table-side Guacamole but tonight we were sort of in a hurry and decided to just order dinners. I had the Huracan Surf and Turf Burrito which was a marinated/grilled shrimp, skirt steak, and cheese. It was very good but I was more surprised by the Mexi Papas that came with it. Roasted potatoes with a small amount of finely sliced jalapenos, onions and tomato. Overall very happy with the meal. My wife had the Blue Seafood Burrito which we both enjoyed. This burrito was full of shrimp and crap meat with a slightly spicy chipotle cream sauce on top. It had more of a kick than I would expect which is why I probably liked it more than I thought I would. Don't let the reviews scare you away, the food is better than most of them I feel; again, while not great, for being in this area of town it is about the best that you can do.

Having been to Jose's probably over a dozen times I think it's fair to say we are going to write a review and it will accurately cover the service and food up to this date 4/19/12. Is this starting to sound like a surgeon generals warning? Warning dining at Jose's may result in disappointment and lack of appetite. Could this be a case for that Dirty Dining segment on the news that I come across every once in a while? Maybe. Let's get the first big negative out of the way. We are going to put it out there on the table and if you still consider going there then I'll review the rest. Two diners I was with ordered Coconut Margaritas. The Coconut that is around the rim of the glass had small black ants on them. The odd response was the waiter's reaction. Imagine telling Ben Stein from Ferris Buellers Day off that you have ants on your drink and getting a monotone answer of indifference. That's pretty much what happened. He was expressionless and removed the drinks and replaced them. I don't know how tolerant you are but insects is the deal breaker. He came back and noted they threw out the can of coconut and that was it. There was no offer of discounted anything as one would expect. This folks is the cherry on top of a declining experience at this restaurant. Other than that let's talk about the typical experience. On weekend evenings as you would expect in Brookfield there is going to be a wait. The smart move is coming on a weekday or at an in between hour. 1 1/2 hour waits are not uncommon. The decor is nice and the restaurant is rather large. Though you will notice the seating and aisles for walking get a little cramped as the guacamole girls and their carts cause mini pedestrian traffic jams. Ordering table side gauc is evidently as addictive and popular as the cocaine boom in the 80's The Guac is fine. If you don't like fussing about at home to make it and don't have it then get it for the nutritional value of the avocado's and accompanying veggies. It tastes fine but then again it's Guac. People are really paying for the presentation of having it made in front of you. As for the entrees. Tacos come standard here. Don't bother with the fish as you can tell it's of a McDonald's variety fried fish. That or some off brand in the frozen section. For the amount of meat you get it fluctuates. I've had a fairly full shell of that gross fish and I've been skimped on the pork in the Al Pastor. I guess it depends. Some tacos listed as spicy sometimes often are devoid of any spice. Needs some consistency in the kitchen there but I shouldn't be too harsh... they are probably up to their ears in problems fighting off gigantic ants. Keep your eye on the Syfy channel in the upcoming months I'm sure they'll recreate this. The food at times is moderate. I like some ideas and concepts. Again as I have said before these things probably look good on paper and are probably good to the average customer. When I go in I am a bit more strict. I focus on the food and the things attacking the drinks. I always raise an eyebrow to reviews of Mexican joints that talk more about the margarita's then anything else. Yeah we know you like drinking. We can take that same group of people and put them in a pond with those drinks and they are going to have a good time regardless. The food and service comes up short. The prices are on the higher end for what you are getting. This is another case of you paying because it's brookfield and there are lots of employees littered around. If you are going to overlook the possible sanitation issues you'll just find Mexican food tailored to the American palate. Take your money else where.

My first and last visit here. Food: Terrible. They managed to be both over sauced and bland. The steak on the taco was so dry it was sort of like jerky. The salsa was like tomato soup. Drink: Par. 7.50 for a weak margarita is steep. Service: Sub par. Waited about 30min for the food. That's FOREVER at a Mexican restaurant. And after all that waiting, my order came out wrong. The server politely tried to make it right but seemed curiously unapologetic. I have no idea why there was a wait on a weeknight for this place. Overpriced, unimpressive whitewashed Mexican-ish food.

Should've known better than to try a Mexican restaurant in Wisconsin. Kind of Wis-Mex food. Chicken fajita tacos had rather tough chicken. Salsa served with the chips - many of which were inedibly hard - had ZERO flavor. I'm not talking about heat - there was no fuego either - but NO flavor at all. It looked complex and promising, but I literally tasted NO flavor whatsoever. I asked if there were other salsa options and they brought a green salsa that had some heat but little flavor. The bar area was unbearably loud though only at about 50% capacity. Fortunately, we were seated a distance away. Even in Wisconsin there must be better choices for Mexican.

I came here with some friends to celebrate a birthday. It was margarita night (Wednesday) so they were only $3. They weren't terribly strong but tasted good enough for me. Unlimited chips and salsa is always a plus. I tried some of the tillapia and was pleasantly surprised at how tasty it was. Despite it being terribly dark in the restaurant, I would come back again if others wanted to go.

Place: Nice, typical Mexican rest Service: We went on a Friday night at 8pm and it was still really busy. We decide to sit at the bar. The service at the bar was decent. Food: Good, can really mess up Mexican food.

Love the fish tacos and table side quacamole! Great happy hour special in the bar and always had great service! Get here early they are typically busy so on a Friday and Saturday night you'll have to wait about an hour or so during peak times.

Jose's is my favorite place for mexican. The food is great and the atmosphere is awesome. It seems late at night they change up the music to some more "top 40" to liven it up. great touch. will be back again and again

Had the Chicken Bacon Chorizo tacos, very tasty. Salsa was a bit bland and no kick, but was overall good. Fire roasted style was interesting. Service was slow but our server was trying his best as it was VERY busy. A bit inattentive on the chips and salsa refills, had to flag people down for that, and we never got a chip refill. House margaritas were TERRIBLE. Tasted like the pre-made crap you get at the grocery store. Overall this sounds like a negative review, but the entree was so good it bumped it from a 3 to a 4. Would return. Saw the table-side Guacamole come through, definitely going to get that next time.

I'd go here again if friends had their hearts set on it, but overall, I find it to be a standard Milwaukee Mexican restaurant, no better, no worse. They do tableside guacamole (as everyone seems to lately), and the menu is pretty large. I've been here a few times and I am always impressed by the service. The first time I went, I couldn't decide what I wanted, so I flat-out asked my server if I wanted A or B. (I can't remember what I was torn between). He said, "A. And if you're not happy, I'll bring you B no question asked, no charge". He was right-- i was happy with what I ordered. The most recent time I was there, my friend wanted something that wasn't on the menu, and she asked the server if they could make it, which they did. Still, I'd recommend Mi Cocina, just up Bluemound a bit east, for a better meal at a similar price.

Standard Mexican restaurant, deserving of 3.5 stars. Let's see... decor: Bright, a little loud, cheesy music, etc. chips & salsa: crispy, salty chips, great consistency on the salsa but not any real heat to it. good flavor though. menu variety: fairly standard, but with a few nice variations, including a decent amount of seafood. also lots of margarita flavors. my entree: fish tacos. crispy breading, creamy sauce, a little heat and a lot of flavor. rice was nothing special. service: above-average. plenty of refills on chips and salsa and drinks, friendly and prompt. no dessert for us. met the needs of four hungry girls post wedding-dress shopping; tasty and perfectly acceptable but nothing extraordinary.

As far as big, fancy Mexican restaurants go, I like Jose's. I decided on 4 stars...I would probably give it a 3.5. I think it is better than Charro and El Fuego, and I will stick with a 4 until proven otherwise. They have a lot of good deals, and their lunch prices are very reasonable. We order take out from work, and it is always accurate and hot. I had lunch there today, and ordered the black mole chicken burrito. The mole sauce was very good, and the chicken was grilled nicely. The salsas are good and the chips are exceptional. Its a bit pricier than some Mexican restaurants, but sometimes you just don't feel like venturing down National Ave. For Brookfield, this place is a win in my book.

My friend signed up to be on their email list and got a coupon for a free margarita/day at Blue Sombreros. We printed out a few copies and a bunch of us went there to get a free margarita each! The blended ones were pretty tasty. You can pretty much get a free margarita a day until the end of July. I'm not sure if you would get that coupon if you sign up now, but I guess it could be worth a try. Otherwise they seem to have drink specials almost everyday. We went on a Thursday and margaritas were $3.50 each until 6, then there was a long island ice tea special after 7PM. They also have a free taco bar until 6PM. I can't remember when it starts (but I know definitely 4PM or earlier). It gets really crowded in the bar area and is really loud. I didn't get a good vibe from the crowd and felt like some of the diners were rude. I guess everyone was fending for themselves and wanted their share of free tacos before 6...they weren't even good! We ordered nachos from the menu and they were okay. I preferred the complementary chips and salsa over the nachos we ordered... I guess I'm happy I got 2 free tacos and a free large margarita -- but I would never go back for the free tacos (waste of space in my stomach) -- I would rather go to Taco Bell or make them at home. In the future I would pbb just come here for margaritas.

DO NOT EAT HERE. My friends and I were looking for a quick place to grab lunch on our break from work--coming here was a huge mistake. The service took forever--50 minutes for 4 dishes. When the food finally came, it tasted good--two of us had their lunch fish special, I had the fried chicken breast with jalepeno sauce, and the last guy had a burrito. I would have said that it was worth the wait, except that 3 of the 4 of us came down with food poisoning later that afternoon. DO NOT EAT HERE.

I had a taco salad with pork. It was loaded with meat! I liked the light lemon vinaigrette dressing, too. I really recommend this salad. Margaritas are cheap on Wednesdays, too. $4. I loved the salsa. Not spicy enough for me but it was flavorful. Kicked us out at 10.

I've been here a few times. Table side guac is pretty good, cherry margaritas remind me of Cherry Icees (which I love)... Otherwise, the other stuff is typical americanized Mexican food. It's good, not great. I don't rush to come back but I do stop if I'm in the area.

Finally stopped in after having driven past it about a million times. Got pretty much what I expected. We were seated immediately, and got our chips and salsa just as we sat down. Our waiter was very friendly, and got our margarita order going right away. Ordered the guacamole that is made right at the table. Very Good! Food is about what you will get at any other big Mexican Restaurant. Servings were very big. Too much to finish in one meal.

I learned something from this particular lunch outing: never order off of the lunch menu. I have always noticed a slightly pricier tab at the end of any dining experience here. You get what you pay for. Normally, the plates are brimming with the entrees, even when you order the tacos. You pay more than the average Mexican restaurant, but the quality is normally there. Not this time around. My first turnoff occurred when my fellow diner and I were brought to the very back of the restaurant to be seated. I thought we were on a tour of the restaurant, as the hostess led us through the different sections to drop us off in the bowels. I did not understand why that was necessary. There were plenty of servers standing around, preparing to wait on tables. The chips and salsa arrived before our server did, and they helped me to forget about where we were sitting. When our server came to ask about table-side guacamole, we were ready to order entrees. My fellow diner chose the Pollo y Camarones en Chipotle with rice & beans, and I opted for the Carne asada with grilled vegetables. When the plates arrived, I was nearly stunned to silence. My carne looked like a hamburger patty when it should have been a nice strip of sirloin--as the menu described. I had asked that it be prepared "medium," but instead, it arrived well done. All gray. No pink. The meat was stringy and chewy. When I said it looked like a hamburger, I meant that it was both the size and shape of one. It had been camouflaged on arrival by the grilled vegetables. The veggies were the only saving grace. They were cooked to tender and seasoned well. Do not expect to receive tortillas with these dishes either, not unless it states it in the description. My fellow diner's plate was just as pitiful looking. The pollo was pulverized. It appeared to have been pounded to near nonexistent. It was wafer thin. The camarones were tiny and soaking in a bath of creamy chipotle sauce. The rice & beans took up more of the plate than the meats. For me, this was an extremely disappointing visit, because I normally love this place. I always order from the taco menu and have never once been unhappy with my meal. Jose's needs to reevaluate how they present their lunch specials, if having any at all. Even though customers are paying less for those items, they are paying according to the time of day and the fact that these are specials. They are supposed to be attractive options. Instead, we are presented with diminutive portions with poor presentation simply because they cost less. You may want to bypass the lunch menu on your next visit, or perhaps Jose's should get rid of that route all together. Stick to what you do best: main menu. Don't try to fool patrons into thinking they are getting something extra-ordinary. They will be sadly mistaken.

Who ever said this place was not worth the wait, it could NOT be any further from the truth, it is worth the wait and then some. Yes we had to wait but I am so glad we did, boy am I glad we did. The service was very prompt, to prompt, the guacamole was melt in your mouth delicious, would of ordered several if I could of eaten it all. the Surf and Turf burrito was beyond delicious, died and gone to heaven good, my husband loved his fajitas as well, we are from Southern California and I half Mexican, raised by my Mexican mom, the food at this place is out of this world, it is up there with the best Mexican food ever!. Going back before we head back to California, only here on business. But I will never forget this place. yummy, yummy & yummy...

We were shocked to read some of the reviews but of course taste is a personal thing. We stopped here on a recent visit to Milwaukee and were pleasantly surprized. The food was a lot better than we expected. The beans had a good taste although they were mashed smooth and not the chunky type I prefer. However what impressed us most was the menu. They had a lot of unusual choices and the prices were reasonable. I had the shredded steak tacos with rice and beans and they were good. Mark has the Picoso The Streets of Tabasco which where pork tenderloin tacos he said were excellent. The service was very good and probably the most efficient of anywhere we went in town. We just wish we had them here. Seeing all the rave reviews though we should have gotten the table side Gauc. No it was not authentic mexican food but the americanized version. If you want that you need to go to the smaller family style establishments but for what this was it was excellent.

This is not a horrible place, but it is *not* Mexican food. This is dumbed-down spice, lack of flavor in most meats served, awful fire-roasted tomato salsa at the table, and only saved by a few key items on the menu; shrimp soup, jala-whoppers appetizer, table-side guacamole, and their full bar. I'd take my mother here so that she and my father who can handle *no* spiciness whatsoever can pretend to eat Mexican food. Sorry, mom. Want the real thing? High-end: -Charro Brookfield -Coa Milwaukee For semi-classy: -Botanas -La Fuente -Mi Cocina -La Estacion ---- and get bold and try out any of the tiny non-listed establishments for a /real/ mexi-ride that will feed you and give you a buzz for under 10 bucks. I am a huge fan of Margaritas Mexican Grill just outside of downtown Waukesha, for example. Do some looking, Wisconsin is full of awesome Mexican food! --and go to Jose's if you're looking for Americanized Mexican that still tries to apply itself as traditional fare.

I go because my wife loves the fish tacos. I go because I like her happy. Stick to the basics if you like authentic Mexican. It will be close. Be very careful on your personal "heat index." I ordered the Jorge tacos "just a little spicier" and got a 9/10 on my scale, which is pretty dang hot (I have signed the waiver at Quaker Steak for the wings). Somebody must have been laughing at my plate back there in the kitchen just for me asking for a little heat, but I was laughing at those guys as the waiter took an empty plate back. Maybe he showed them that "the knucklehead who asked for hot" actually did eat it all. Now my stomach is a mess. Beware the heat index. My best suggestion is to go into Waukesha and hit Casa del Rio or La Estacion. Better taste, less cash, more authentic.

Good Ameri-Mexican restaurant. Decent food and service. Very loud and always crowded, with families and every type of customer. Oh, and they even do the crazy birthday song, clapping thing - annoying and cheesy, but typical.

  • R And A S.

Average at best. Good for some post-work margaritas. If you want to learn Spanish - go to the bathroom because they're giving out free lessons. Not great, but not terrible either. Get the surf and turf burrito, but have a good magazine ready in the bathroom for you because you're going to be boo booing the rest of the night.

Jose's is a trendy Mexico place if you can believe that. Pop music in the bar and sports makes it very lively. I love the tacos and chimichanga. They do get very busy even during the week so plan ahead. H

i'm not even a picky Mexican food eater, but I have been disappointed the last couple times I was at Jose's. AND I will never forget when I took my brother there for the 1st time, he was visiting from North Carolina, and a CENTIPEDE crawled up the wall in the booth we were seated in! Gross! I wasn't making a scene but was disgusted so I asked our server to be moved and tried to get them to kill it, but by the time they figured out what I was saying the insect crawled back between the seat and wall where it was out of sight. On top of that, they moved us to the booth DIRECTLY BEHIND the one we were just seated at and looked at me like I was a lunatic! Like I said, i didn't make a scene but I would think out of embarrassment the situation would have been handled differently. The food is average at best, and no one should ever have to eat a meal in the company of a centipede. YUCK

Tableside guacamole is awesome. Chips and salsa are pretty standard. Was not a fan of the strawberry margaritas...they taste like a cheap mix instead of fresh. Food is always great though, and call ahead seating is nice for busy nights. Definitely good food for the price. Always clean and servers are always friendly. A date night staple!

As we drove down Bluemound Rd looking for a place to eat, we spotted Jose's. The parking lot was PACKED! Great sign of a good restaurant. Typical Mexican restaurant decor. We were quickly seated. Servers were attentive and fast. Kudos to them! Free chips...meh. Cold and tasteless. Salsa...meh. Had an off taste (green olives?) No heat as others observed. The chili rellenos are the frozen variety (Take out of freezer and microwave on high for 7 minutes). At least they followed the directions because it was not frozen or cold in the middle. Ordered a shredded beef taco on the side. Ever wonder what dogfood would taste like? If I had to guess I would bet money that taco is REAL close. Wish I was a drinker because the Margarita menu looked real good!. Maybe that is why the bar was so packed.

I couldn't decide between 3 or 4 stars. I love the table side guacamole. That's the only really say that I love and is consistently good. Other then that everything else is so-so. Fish tacos are okay. Everything else is average.

This is our favorite Mexican place! The food is good, nothing too different or out of the ordinary, but all tasty. Great place to go for a birthday! They give you a free silly sombrero, sing to you, and bring you a flan with a candle! Oh and last but not least the GIANT margaritas!!! Biggest I've seen...and BLUE! If you're looking for a quite place this is not it. It's very loud and always busy. Great place to hang out with friends.

I remember I was a bit skeptical about trying out a restaurant with such an uncreative name, but I must say I've enjoyed every trip here. The decor is distinctive - from the cactus out in the front, wooden tables, plenty of Mexican artifacts and always some good tunes in the background, you could even pick up some Spanish if you make a trip to the restroom ;-) Love the fresh guacamole prepared table side, which caters to everyone food finickiness factor! I generally go for a combination platter - tamales, enchiladas, tostadas - they're all pretty good. Drinks are cheap, the Jose colada with the blue curacao is my favorite here. The staff is friendly, eager to please and there generally isn't any waiting around to be seated. Overall a pretty good option for reasonable, no-frill dining.

This is possibly the worst restaurant I have ever been to, and definitely the WORST mexican place i've ever been to. I live in New York, so I'm used to good Mexican, but truthfully, any chain Mexican place--including Taco Bell--beats this place. I went there with my aunt and cousin while staying in a nearby hotel for my grandfather's funeral. Each of us thought the good was awful (that includes my 10 year old cousin!) The bad food made an already grim occasion even less pleasant.

My family and I were looking for a mexican restaurant in the Brookfield area and stumbled upon this place. The atmosphere is very unique! I loved the restaurant setup. The server was friendly. The menu prices weren't too bad, especially if you ordered a combination plate. The food was tasty but not as good as some smaller mexican restaurants I've been to. The sad thing was that by the time we made it home everyone in our family had to "use the rest room". I'm guessing it was because of the restaurant...what a shame.

  • N. S.

Margaritas were quite tasty while we waited at the bar for the rest of our party. Warm chips and great salsa kept our hunger at bay. The atmosphere was comfortable and the staff became more friendly as the hours passed. We noticed a sign advertising "Happy Hour $2.75 margaritas and free taco bar". Since it was after 2pm we decided to wait and try it. The Guacamole we ordered (freshly prepared table-side) was excellent. We looked the menu over and decided to try a dish on a return visit. The taco bar had ground beef & shredded chicken and all the fixings. By the way... If you visit the restroom you can learn some Spanish! Adios!

Not too bad for the Chancery and for Brookfield. Chips are good. Salsa is a little over roasted and "smoky". I have been here three times and I do definitely recommend the guacamole. If you have the time or the means make the trip downtown to one of the many fine establishments on the Southside.

  • Harlan G S.

Incredibly, obnoxiously LOUD! From the patrons! At least on a weekend night. Man... You can't hear. The service is very attentive though. And friendly. The food is above average and the prices are reasonable for what you get. Recommend going here at 'off' times unless you want your ears blasted! I guess I'm more into a relaxing, non-loud behaving place. Particularly when I'm trying to enjoy the people you're with and the meal experience. But this place is worth a look. Just bring your ear plugs!

After some debate, this restaurant/bar was the choice for a Saturday night drinks meet-up. Great choice! I'm so glad Brookfield has some good late-night options now - the bar here stays open until midnight. I was convinced to try the Tornado, a frozen swirl of margarita and sangria, and soooo tasty. The bar area is large, a great place to meet up and with friendly bartenders. The staff was happy to get us a table when we asked. There we really enjoyed the table-side guacamole, made fresh while we watched, and another round of drinks. While salsa music plays in the main rooms, the bathrooms play spanish learning tapes. It's remarkably entertaining! One of my friends could have written a spanish country western song after his short visit; the instructor lost her passport, her airplane ticket, her wallet, and her child, one after the other... Definitely the place to visit again next time I'm in the area!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
