My husband and I ate dinner here because we were staying at the lodge next door and it was windy and about -20°. We didn't want to drive into town to look for a place to eat. We checked into our room and saw the menu for this place--the usual bar and grill fare, burgers, reubens, steaks--so we figured sure, let's get a burger. After picking our way across the iced-over parking lot, we walked in and the waitress tells us that they're not serving anything from the menu, only offering the all you can eat prime rib buffet for $19 per person. We're not enthusiastic but it's 20 below and we're tired so we decide to go for it. Salad bar has head lettuce, tired raw broccoli, cherry tomatoes, frozen peas, and goopy dressing plus six "salads" obscured by heaps of mayonnaise. One is pasta, one has some seafood, one is potato salad and the other three are mysteries that I do not try. The hot food line has decent mashed potatoes, cheezy potatoes with fake baco-bits, overcooked green beans, bad breaded whitefish chunks, tasteless shrimp scampi, slimy BBQ chicken wings, and overcooked prime rib. Except that the quantities are huge, it's like eating at an assisted living facility. I won't be back.

Stopped for a late lunch on the way to Superior, WI last weekend. The restaurant is in a great location with a great view. Also is tricked out with some OK atmosphere. We have stopped for lunches in the past. They have a significant investment and for some reason the C students are managing the restaurant. I had the salad bar which has pickled herring that I like. Unfortunately, the broccoli soup tasted like flour so I didn't finish it. Overall, the salad bar was pretty not special although it is hard to screw up a salad bar. Large chunks of salad onion; cut by someone that has never eaten a salad. Our waitress was very nice and checked on us several time. The second ceramic step toward the booths was still broken with a couple chunks missing same as two years ago. The place has that "just hanging on" feel to it with all of the corners that can be cut are.

I'll start with the good. Staff was very friendly and helpful. A good variety of drinks were available at the bar. Great north-woods decor. Good salad bar. Now for the bad, only one person working the entire lunch crowd. She did a great job but could have used some help. As fore the menu.... We wanted the whitefish, it was crossed out on the menu. No longer available. I ask about the Walleye, they were out. My husband ordered the shrimp, it came with four medium sized shrimp - not large. Not enough for the price. The steak we at was so-so.(not much flavor) The lake trout was fishy tasting. The only decent thing to eat was the salad bar. Unfortunately, we won't be back. The food did not taste good enough to spend that kind of money.

Tourist trap. A tourist trap is not inherently a terrible thing, but it usually assures prices will be too high and in the attempt to please lowest common denominator tastes the place will fail to excel at much of anything. Such is the case here. On the plus side, the service was friendly. The waterside location provided a lovely view. Unfortunately, as is so often the case with tourist traps the food seemed to be an afterthought. They're counting on the kind of fuzzy-minded vacation thinking that makes a $16 fried fish special seem like a good idea. Why not? It comes with unlimited trips to the salad/soup bar. Don't be fooled. The salad bar is a sad affair; prepared salads drowning in mayo are well represented. The only distinction I could draw between the beer and cheese soup and the clam chowder was that one was yellow-orange and the other was white. One enthusiastic trip to the salad bar could blow through a day's caloric input without offering much satisfaction in return; this is food for people who pay no attention whatsoever to what they're eating. That theme continued when the mains arrived: nice pieces of whitefish indifferently breaded and fried until almost tough. Soggy fries cooked in the same oil (which could have used a change) shared the plate with a sad foodservice grade frozen veggie medley of carrot, cauliflower and broccoli. A meal fit for a college dining hall, at best. Avoid.

The restaurant is a fairly new construction about 3 miles west of downtown. It has a large, spacious interior with a northwoods themes, and most of the tables have a great view of the lake. Here's the problem. I have a cardinal rule against ordering bbq ribs a) north of St. Louis, and 2) a restaurant that is not solely dedicated to bbq. In violating my cardinal rule, I ordered one of the worst rib plates I have ever eaten. Explorer's Point had many fine dishes on their menu, and the side orders and soup on my plate were above average. But the ribs were fast cooked (boiled), then reheated and topped with a sloppy sauce. All of the rules of good bbq were violated, resulting in little more than tough pork on a bone. So if you go to Explorer's Point, do yourself a favor. Pull out the whiteout and cover the item and pretend it's not there. If your spouse is there, tell him/her that if you order the ribs, she will leave you on the spot.
