Mmmhh, wholesome unadulterated Grade A Wisconsin beef and chicken is at the top of my list. I don't know if it's because people here in LA are too caught up with extra lean beef which robs the beef of its flavor, or if in WI they generally do use a tastier higher quality 80/20 Chuck, but regardless, the burgers at the Wooden Nickel could definitely do a beat down on a majority of the hamburger chains in the LA area (fatburger, tommy's, bravo burger, tops, etc..... it is although comparable to the Habit). I didn't think it would be difficult trying to find something to eat at 11pm on a Saturday on College, but our choices were limited and after a drunken binge of Sal's pizza the night before, we weren't up for back'to'back pizza night especially since back at home, Newport Beach is all pizza joints. Luckily the grill guy who shuts it down at 11 was able to accommodate us (10 mins till 11), and I'm glad he did cuz I was hankering for some good eats and the Wooden Nickel came through minus having the deep fryer already being shut down for the much beloved deep fried items... the fryer was probably already becoming a tepid pool of oil. So the Wooden Nickel answers that age old question for me of "where's the beef" - the answer is, it's in Wisconsin along with the cheese. I wonder if they know that in Hawaii...hmmm

This place has amazing food. Elk burgers are amazing and so are the appetizers. The only thing that stopped me from giving 5 stars is that the place is rather small. Other than that it was awesome and look forward to going back!

I like to stop in for lunch, have a good burger and play free trivia on the TV.

Glad this place is representing on the Yelp. This was one of my spots in College. I've been coming here ever since Debbie let me in with our pathetic fake ID's. Great f-ing food. The mozzarella pretzels are to die for. A must. The chipper (potato shanks shaped like chips) are seasoned and heavenly. Get a side of ranch! The burgers are great. The regular touchdown will do but if you're a big guy get the double! The beer is cheap. A local townie staple mixed with frat/sorority/jock crowd from Lawrence University. This is Wisconsin at its finest. The wooden interior feels like you're in a cabin in Door County.

I love this bar. They have a great selection of beers and some decent bar food too. We always liked the fried pickles and burgers - they offer free popcorn too. The atmosphere is casual - wooden booths on the inside and a nice patio outside. This bar only gets 4-stars, mainly because a lot of times they turn the music up way too loud.

The Nickel is a popular hang-out place for 21+ Lawrentians and always seems to be there for stressed out day drinkers the week before finals. The Nickel has a great, low-key atmosphere that is perfect for one of your first stops down the Ave or for the hang-out place for the evening. You order at the bar, take your seat (if you can find one! It gets busy), and wait for your food to come. The wait time for food can be brutal, even when it isn't a busy night. One time, we waited 45 minutes just for an order of waffle fries and onion rings. I actually ran out to run an errand, returned, and the food STILL hadn't arrived! But I'm willing to let that go, just because I love this divey little bar. There's just something about the Nickel. Probably nostaliga. I can't attest to the beers or burgers, as I steer clear of both. I can't not give this place four stars. I know I'll be back here kicking back with a bunch of friends the next time I'm in Appleton!

No better bar burger in all of Appleton. Tony runs a great bar with a great variety of beers and tons of sports options on the tv. Including Curling!!! Staff are really welcoming and super fast. This is my daughter's favorite place to go for lunch since she was five years old. Always where she wants to go for her birthday. Thanks Tony. You run a great place.

Went there tonight for beer and wings. Good selection of beers on tap. Something for everyone. The wing basket was good. Great portion of wings and fries for the money. The problem I have was with the cleanliness. We walked in and up to the bar. We were the only ones there. We sat at the bar and ordered our beers. She brought them and got snotty when we asked if we could use a bar towel as the counter was all dirty and sticky. We ordered and then it was shift change. The new bartender was pleasant and easy to talk to. But the rest of the establishment needed to be cleaned. Mind you this was only 5pm and bar was empty. Floor had stuff all over it. Tables dirty and not wiped off. The food preparation table was full of crumbs and spills. No attempt to even wipe it down. Bartender continued to prep assortment of items on this table without wiping it off.....oh the cross contamination happening there. Not sure if I would go back because of the cleanliness and the attitude of the employees.

Nice clean bar. Watched packer game. Huge beer (22oz) for pint size price (on Sunday) . Not crowded. Booths- can see TVs from every seat! Would return.

Dive-y. Late night food. Flowing libations. Friendly bartenders. The one weird thing when I was there: I looked in the beer fridge to make my drink selection. I ordered something that I could clearly see in said beer fridge. I was told that it was seasonal and that they didn't carry it in the winter. I insisted that the beer was in fact there, a whole row of it, and directed her to it. I finally got what I wanted, but they are apparently not entirely sure what is in stock.

Went there tonight for a beer and burgers. We got our drinks. Looking at the menu, it was very expensive for the Valley. There were 3 females behind the bar. One was accommodating and properly dressed. The other 2 had spaghetti strap tops on with sweaty rolls hanging out all over. This is totally a health code violation. Needless to say, we did not eat because we did not want either of them making our food. There are enough respectful places to patronize in the area.

Very friendly service, if not always on the ball. Excellent selection of fried indulgences. Decent beer selection. I love the dark wood, slightly sticky, sorta divey but all kinds of Appleton folks hanging out anyway vibe in this bar

Chippers - (Home made potato chips) French Fries Waffle Fries Onion Rings I had them all... My buddy tells me they claim the best burger in the world, the half pound version I had was amazing, not sure its the best in the world... I think burgers are subjective, my favorite may still be the Redcoat Tavern back in Royal Oak Michigan... The beer selection is great maybe 10 to 15 on tap and countless bottled varieties to peruse... The service is one way, you make your order at the bar and they will bring it to you... We sat on the front porch of sorts and it was just great even as it poured rain we were high and almost dry under the half roof half awning shelter... A great spot when you find yourself in Appleton!

It's a really low-key hole in the wall kind of place. The waitress we had was very friendly. The service was a little slow, and normally I don't gripe about that, but there was hardly anyone in the place when we were there. We got the Friday fish fry, which was okay - Wisconsin is like, fish fry central, so I guess I don't understand why you'd bother serving fish fry if it's not really good. SUPER greasy - yes, I realize that's the nature of fried foods, but usually cooks set them out on a rack to drip some of the oil off before serving them. It also kind of grossed me out that they were cooking the food right in front of you, at the end of the bar... I know a lot of restaurants do the same things behind closed doors, but it didn't seem sanitary. It also seemed like an afterthought. I mean, if you wanna serve bar food, great, who cares if it's right out there - but if it's supposed to be an actual RESTAURANT - maybe have a dedicated cooking staff? Meh. Overall, it was ok - not great.

Really bad experience. Stopped in the night before a Packers home game and would have thought they would have been more appropriately staffed. They were dying and it wasn't even that crowded. Don't know if there were sick calls, new employees, or normally run understaffed but they had 2 people covering the whole joint. One guy behind the bar running the grill and bartending and a girl bartending and trying to wait tables. Took FOREVER to get our food, drinks almost as bad. Waitress never got around to picking up the bill, I had to go up to the bar to pay. I paid the bill for both couples and said that she could put them together. She does the exact opposite and separates them out. The couple we were with sampled a taste of a tap they thought they might order and they complained it was quite warm. Two stars given because the food was OK once we got it and because we like the look/decor and vibe of the place. Really hope they were just having an off night.

Solid older bar with some character. Tons of TVs Internet Jukebox. Food is pretty decent with the fresh potato chips being the highlight. OK selection of beers on tap...of course it has way too many Wisc big brewery junk.

Awesome bar food. Mozzarella sticks are fabulous; foul ball chicken sandwich is my favorite. Great choppers and fries. The decor is cool...it's an older bar with a lot of wood inside. Free trivia is always fun. Nice tv setup is great for sports fans. Only complaint is that it can be slow. Can't really blame them for not staffing for rushes, but if it happens to get busy when you want to order, expect to wait.

Divey sports bar and grill done in typical WI style: lots of wood decor, and memorabilia everywhere, along with hot girls in short shorts and tank tops serving lots of alcohol and beer and delicious burgers to drunk men and women. Plus there is a juke box, which I of course dominated. The staff here was friendly, the people here were obvious regulars and everyone we were with had fun.
