The food was amazing. Scotch Egg - Good. Not amazing but tastes like a typical scotch egg. Brewers Schnitzel - My favorite dish. Nice and crispy and the cheese and bacon supply great flavor. A must if you're a cheese addict. Niman Ranch Lamb Shank - My second favorite dish. The lamb was very tender and the sauce was not overpowering. Shepard's Pie - Good. Not amazing. Flat Iron Steak - Good. Not amazing. A very safe dish to eat if you're not looking outside the box.

Our company Extreme Sounds Entertainment did a wedding on 06/26/15. Great place for a wedding, friendly stuff, very professional and the atmosphere was excellent. I will recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a place to have any type of event. Thank you, Extreme Sounds Entertainment extremesoundsent.com

This is my favorite restaurant in the Fox Cities! From their home brewed beer, sodas, fish fry, and pizza you really can't order anything here that you won't love. I always get the cream soda and it is easily in my all time top 5 cream soda list. (I know that it's crazy I have one of those!) You can even order a growler of it! Depending on my mood when I come here I normally start with cheese curds and move on to pizza or the fish fry. All of their pizzas are fantastic and I loved their fish fry when I had it. The atmosphere here is PERFECT for a romantic date night or you can sit in the bar with a friend. I have had so many meals here I won't forget and go every time I'm in the area.

Great selection of beer, food is good, but on numerous occasions the staff have been rude.

So, it is really dark in here, they really want to make it seem like a cellar I guess. There is dim lighting, so I would not recommend for elderly or people with poor vision. The bathroom also left a lot to be desired. However, I had the elk burger which was amazing. I would go back for that. I didn't have any beer this trip, but the soda was sub par. Our waitress was very nice. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but if I was in the area I would stop back in.

We stopped here prior to seeing a show at the Skyline Comedy Club upstairs. We shared a Scotch Egg, our first, which was very good. I tried their Whiskey Old Fashioned and a Moscow Mule. Also good. Service was excellent. 70's rock was playing, which I found to be an odd but not completely unpleasant choice. Maybe it was being played ironically. I don't know. Hipsters are crazy like that. We returned to the bar after the show to have another cocktail. One note: We asked the bartender when he thought we should go upstairs to the Skyline for the 8pm show. He said 7:20/7:30ish. When we got there at 7:30 the room was already ¾ seated. So if you don't have preferred seating and it's a popular act I would get up there sooner.

Stone Cellar has the potential to be everything great in its area. It failed a little bit with me, but that's simply because I didn't really enjoy my burger. Here's the deal: The ambiance of this place is amazing. The atmosphere is so perfect for a great night out (and I imagine during the winter, this place is even busier). We visited as a party of eight, and ended up finding a table in the bar that we could eat without waiting for a table. I did notice that the wait seemed to be VERY long, so take note of that on weekends. Also, we called a few hours earlier to check on reservations. We were told we could call 45-30 minutes before we came, and they'd put our name in. When we did finally call, we were told that they don't take names over the phone (after a bit of confusing arguing, they finally let us). I would just suggest that anyone answering the phone is a little more trained for guidelines. We ordered a few appetizers that were really good: my cheese curds were amazing. They're squares, which is really odd, but weirdly fabulous. I loved them. We also ordered spinach and artichoke dip, which was great as well. Only down side: I feel like we only got about ten chips for the dip. We did ask for more chips, and they were delivered shortly thereafter. My burger wasn't very good at all. It's served dry, which is kind of a disappointment to burger fanatics. I also ordered it medium, after asking our server specifically if I should get medium or medium rare. I explained that I do like it to be very pink, just not dripping blood. She said I should go with medium, that it would be good. Turns out my burger was almost well done. Eh...fail. The service was great, she was clearly busy but she did not lack in any way whatsoever. We were all very happy with the service.

The entrance is a bit confusing, but the restaurant is down stairs. The atmosphere was good, low lighting and fun cellar walls. A very rustic intimate setting, the temperature was comfortable without fans or a sweater. The food was even better than the seating! Clean delicious menu options with several organic choices. None of the food was greasy, even the fried yummy cheese curds, we went back for seconds! Lots of hand crafted beers and sodas to try as well. The blue raspberry is worth trying if you like sugary sweet sodas. We went out of our way to try something new and we will defiantly be coming back again.

Atmosphere here rocks. Whenever my parents are in town I take them out here. Beer connoisseurs will love this place... The blond bartender down stairs is awesome. She is new but on point!

Meh. Stone Cellar may, as so many on Yelp claim, be the best restaurant in Appleton, but that doesn't mean it's a great restaurant as so many Yelpers claim. Three of us dined there and found the service to be subpar and the food mediocre. We ordered Copper River Sockeye Salmon (only in season now) and there's no way that's what we received. And, it was overcooked, dry and flavorless. My companions both ordered steak, which was decent. The overarching component of all three meals was lack of salt. Do they not season anything in Wisconsin? Salt. It's a flavor enhancer. Tell the chef, huh? The appetizer we ordered, duck wings, was served to our party of three with four legs. (Most servers would simply ask if you want an upgrade to 6 for a table of three, right?). The duck wings came in a bowl with no plates for any of us. Odd. We ate off of cocktail napkins. The ambience in the restaurant is fine. You're in a cellar, so it's a bit dark, but that's not a big deal for us. Noise level was fine. The clientele were very mixed. Young couples, families, women out for a bachelorette party. Overall, it was fine, but hardly a mecca of gastronomy or superior service

Beers at decent, worth trying, but the food is phenomenal. Excellent burgers. Their root beer is quite excellent as well.

Great atmosphere and great beer. I had the special pork meatloaf sandwich and it was amazing. Others in my group agreed the food was great and this place is a great find. Service was friendly and helpful. Would definitely go here again if I'm back in the area.

We came in late on a Sunday night. Ordered a pizza, shepherds pie and bison burger. All were awesome. Especially the pizza. Had the blue berry Hefeweizen and it was good. I was afraid that coming in so late would mean so so food. Not this place. On their game even before they closed.

The place is in a great location, right off the bike/ walking trail. I have been here several times...from grabbing a bite to eat to a few beers after work. The food is exceptionally good. The beer selection is decent for a gastropub. The best part about the restaurant is atmosphere. When you walk down into the cellar its like you step back into time. The place is huge, yet still has a cozy feel to it. The service is also fast and friendly. I am considering joining the mug club!

I have frequented this restaurant since I was a kid. Recently, they added more of a "Farm to Table" flare, which I was very happy to see. They use local cheeses, vegetables and meats from the area and everything on the menu is excellent. I still dream about their Four Year Aged Cheddar Burger. Completely drool-worthy! Oh yeah, their beer is great too. The last time I was there I tried the Pumpkin beer, which was phenomenal. I haven't been disappointed here yet. It's a place I make sure to visit on my trips back home to Appleton.

I agree with the naysayers here -- the boyfriend and I had lunch at the Stone Cellar, and it was just plain bad, for the most part. The restaurant is down by the river, so the parking lot is pretty tight, and the restaurant itself is in, you guessed it, the cellar, past an odd variety of stores or some such. Going down the stairs felt like heading into a dungeon, and about as well-lit. In our corner booth, I felt a bit like we were being buried alive... Service was neither great nor terrible, but the food...oh, the food. The boyfriend hemmed and hawed and eventually settled on the Jaeger Schnitzel, which he thought was pretty decent. However, my fish and chips were flat-out the worst version of the dish I've ever had. The fish was soggy and greasy, the fries were nothing special, and the side of slaw was clearly out of a jar and perhaps past its best. One bite of that and I was ready to toss the whole plate. Seriously guys, with your emphasis on fresh and local and all that, HOW can you not make your own slaw, or at least buy something decent?? So when people go on about the Stone Cellar and how fabulous it is, I just quietly die a little inside and vow never to return. I don't know about beer, but if you like good food, go somewhere, anywhere else.

I tried to go to a different Appleton restaurant, but it was closed so we ended up down the street at Stone Cellar. I would give it five stars based on service alone - both times I've been here the servers have been friendly, accommodating, and downright pleasant (which really is quite a treat). The food is really glorified bar food. Bar food is not my cup of tea, so I haven't loved what I've ordered here, but if you are a fan of burgers, sandwiches, cheese curds, sweet potato fries, beer - you will be pleasantly satisfied. There are two parts to the restaurant - the underground "cellar" (thus the name) and the main level outside patio. We've opted to the dark cellar because it was hot outside, but the patio looked quite lovely.

While visiting in Wisconsin, I was taken to this restaurant in the evening. It's specializes in beers as it is a brewery. No I do not drink beer, I am told that the beer there is very good. The menu selections match what beers would be best with each item. I thought it funny, almost a parody of wine. But this is serious food. Schnitzel and pizza and sandwiches and burgers and fish and a full variety for any taste was available. I had to special for the day - pheasant tacos, even with cactus. They were fresh from Janesville, Wisconsin. They were surprisingly good. They also make their own soda pop and root beer. Any beer drinker, or not, would be satisfied eating here. I recommend it.

Not impressed! I had lunch last week with a friend. Crab Cake Caesar salad and a Lamb burger were specials so we had that. I ordered medium rare and it was not. The lamb tasted old and was dry. The crab cakes on the salad were very ordinary but the worst was that the greens had sand in them. After bringing to the server's attention, nothing was done about it save for an apology. No comped meal ,nothing taken off the bill. No yelping way I'll be back.

Stopped by for a brew (which was excellent - their Scottish ale) & we decided to try their chicken-bacon-ranch pizza. It was delicious - a little sweet & a little tangy. Great eating while sipping one of their great choices of beer. Their food is always good & they serve items from local farms as much as possible. With some different items plus many old "stand bys", Stone cellar is a great place to come.

Beer cheese Mac and cheese was awesome service good . And friendly. Beer rocked. I definitely recommend coming here just for the Mac and cheese. It had Cajun sausage and bacon. Everything here is organic and as natural as they can mange our. The boys Root beer was excellent and a tea color

Had to omit a star due to the often inattentive service. The server was very pleasant and cordial, but was too often absent and slow to deliver items. However, the food was delicious. My friend had the crab cakes, which were easily the best I've had in the area. I enjoyed the grass-fed sirloin steak sandwich, which was very good but would've been even better with a side of Tiger sauce. Sweet potato fries were also delicious. Great meal with music on the beer garden patio on a beautiful early summer evening. Looking forward to returning soon.

I've only been twice and I've only ordered the Brewers schnitzel both times. Overall it's really good. The only things that would make the rating higher would be if there was a little more sauce for the spaetzles and if the veal was a touch more tender. The selection of beer from their brewery upstairs always makes the dinner more pleasant.

Wow. Great place all around in Appleton. Try the Red Elk burger (special on Wed) with hooks Colby cheese, caramelized onions, bison bacon on a pretzel bun. Or the little battered cheese curds or tiger shrimp. Beers are the best. Had the flight of 10 and not one was a disappointment. Why haven't i been here before??? A must try if you're in the area.

I usually come here for the beer. This is one of the great places in the Fox Valley for craft beer. You will either love or hate the ambiance. It is literally in the cellar of an old stone building. Cool or creepy? You decide. I vote cool. The beer selections are great. Just pick one and enjoy. We also had some of the burgers. Duck tenders made a great appetizer - yum! I had a buffalo-bacon burger with blue cheese. Very good. My tablemates also liked theirs. They had house made soda to treat the little one. I am not sure of the flavor, but it was bright blue. I stayed with the imperial stout and then the seasonal ale. Awesome.

Service was excellent, our waitress was flawless. It runs seat yourself outside. The Cajun pasta was very good, burgers were 4/5. Beer was pleasant but not exceptional. Overall, great setting and fabulous service, but the beer and food were slightly above average.

Don't order a Coors light... Like the lady next to us at the bar. They old sell the beer they brew. I had a few stonetober fest beers and a few pumpkin beers... All delicious. The bartender engaged our humor of subsequently ordering a PBRs and red dogs. Good fella that bearded bartender. Great ambience. I ate the supreme schnitzel with a white wine sauce asparagus and a bed of spaetzel. Heavy but quite tasty.

Went on a very busy Saturday night. Other than not a whole lot of seating in the bar while we waited, the bar was very nice. Beer was very good. Once we got seated, the server was very nice. Ordered the crabcake burger with pub chips. It was excellent. Others in my party really enjoyed their food (duck wings, burgers, chicken fingers) as well. Overall, the atmosphere was really neat. I will definitely return the next time I'm in Appleton.

Stone Cellar Brewpub - Bison Burgers - Vanishing Vanilla Stout - excellent. Quaint location in the "Between the Locks" mall building, on the Fox River, original home of the Walter Brewery. Fun first stop in Appleton to sample some of the local, small batch beer - vanishing vanilla stout - certainly lived up to it's reputation, smooth and tasty. She tried the bison burger with sweet potato fries and I had the bison bacon bleu burger with fries. Taylor, our server, was friendly and efficient - delivering the stout quickly and the meals soon after. The bison is source from a farm in Shicoton, WI - Navarino Farms, breads are made locally at LaBrea Bakery. We like the Stone Cellar's philosophy by leading the charge in the community to be more sustainable, support local businesses and local citizens, strive towards the offering of only organic fruits and vegetables, and buying from companies with certified humane practices. We really enjoyed our visit to Stone Cellar Brewpub, I think you will to.

This is my favorite restaurant in the Fox Cities. Not only is the food all locally produced & "green" ... They also have AMAZING BEER! Scottish Ale is amazing. The atmosphere is legendary. I recommend the BBQ Pulled Pork w/ fries, Mediterranean Chicken & especially the Cheese Curds!!!

Great place. The food is always tasty and they have some really great beers. The patio in the summer is always nice. It can get really busy, but the food is worth the wait.

Stone Cellar consistently impresses. Their ambiance is perfect for a nice intimidate date. Food is also really fantastic with almost every item on the menu being sourced locally. I'm not a beer drinker, but the ones in my company are always satisfied with their selection. They do brew their own root beer which is really fantastic. A few vegetarian options and amazing pizza. This place is a treat, but not priced like one. Really affordable for a night out.

I went here for lunch recently and as I walked down the steps into the restaurant I was immediately struck by how much this place literally looks like a cellar. It was verrry dark, at least in the dining room area, like to the point of it being hard to read the menu. Anyway, very authentic ambiance. I ended up ordering the portabella melt, which had a little kick to it due to the chipotle mayo and was very good. I especially like the brioche bun, which was a pleasant surprise because I usually don't like brioche. I didn't have any drinks while I was there, but I would stop back in to try some of their beers if I was in the area again.

This place is good. It's you typical sports bar/restaurant with the hometown feel. The wings are really good and they service is super friendly and accommodating.

I posted a review a while ago and I stand by my review of the food. But now there is a new menu with higher prices. I have no problem paying more for good food but they almost doubled the prices. If they had a seating problem before, try won't now. We usually had to wait for a seat but the last time we went we were seated right away. It was my wife and I only. The bill was almost 60. It used to be around 30. We had eaten there a lot because of the good food and good prices. We are now in search of a new favorite place...

If you are looking for some good beverages and an awesome menu this is the place to be. Many different options on the menu and some great specials from grass fed hamburgers to bacon infused cheese curds. Stone cellar provides many organic and local food options. The service is friendly and fast. If you are looking for some great beer and food check out stone cellar.

Food was good. Beer was good. Atmosphere in the restaurant was dark and gloomy. (I felt like Tom Sawyer in the cave looking for a way out.) I recommend heading here on a nice summer evening and sit out on the deck. I also recommend the local root beer! It was awesome!!

Stopped here for new years. No wait, place was busy tho. Food was excellent. Beer was even better. Had schnitzel and my fiancé had pot roast, both were great! Service was also excellent! Prices weren't to bad either! I will definitely be coming back next year!

Favorite restaurant in Appleton! The dining room is in the cellar (which has all stone walls) and has such a unique, cozy feel to it. The food is amazing and the menu has so many different choices. They brew their own line of gourmet sodas too (would strongly suggest the root beer and ginger ale). I ordered Stone Cellar's Mediterranean Chicken Wrap and it was delicious. The servers are friendly, quick, and will carefully listen to any special requests. If I'm ever back in Appleton, I'll definitely stop back at the Stone Cellar Brew Pub!

Cool ambience, fresh local organic food and friendly waitstaff. Came in to Appleton late on a Sunday night so food options were limited...but we were absolutely delighted. The sodas are brewed in house and are delicious.

Visiting from out of town, I was excited to get some Wisconsin cheese. I can't remember what kind of cheese it was, but the fried cheese curds here are delicious with the marinara sauce. Eat while it's hot - the cheese is creamy and I'm surprised to see how they're in blocks "like tofu" as I said to my tablemates. The beer here is great too. I'm a big fan of wheat beers so the first one I had was the Houdini Honey Wheat - delicious. Out of all the beers I've ever had in my life, I think I can say this one was the sweetest. I also had the Vanilla Stout which was like "liquid breakfast" - oatmeal, coffee and vanilla. Seriously, I would like this for breakfast if it could ever be permitted. I had the jaeger schnitzel as an entree. Considering that a salad/soup is also included for these entrees, I'd say it's a great value. I had a salad, but I heard from others that the chili was delicious. Back to the schnitzel though, the pork was definitely pounded and it's consistency looked like it was dipped in tapioca starch for a light fry. This was really good and the helping of spaetzle was perfect with the creamy mushroom gravy. Service was good, but surprisingly, it was difficult to get a table on a Wednesday night for 6 people. Calling ahead of time might be good if you've got a large party. I'd definitely come back for the cheese curds and beer. Maybe a burger as I heard from others that they enjoyed theirs.

Vanilla stout is excellent. Wife and I had a Scottish egg and smoked fish dip for an appetizer. Wife got beer braised short rib and I got Cajun Alfredo pasta. .all dishes were excellent , service was very good ,for a Saturday night. We came from green bay. Will definitely come back again.

Visit here quite often. They have made a lot of menu changes recently. One of which was to their fish tacos. Always a favorite of mine, until they now put smaller fish fillets into 3 taco shells instead of 2 and upped the price by $3. Service in the bar area is often very slow. You will have 3 staff standing and chatting with each other while you are waiting for someone to acknowledge you. Definitely won't be at the top of my list for recommendations as it had been in the past.

  • Holly V.

This place is getting pretty good now that they've went the local route (we used to hate it). Their red meat is still pretty gamey, but maybe you're into that?

We split a beer flight and it was more than enough beer for us! Between my wife and I, there were no beers that at least one of didn't like! The cheese curds are really good and the schnitzel was to die for! The aged cheddar grass fed burger unfortunately was bland. Can't win them all but I'd try this place again!

Always great beer, always great food. My husband and I have been regulars for 3-4 years now.....I've ordered A LOT of different things on the menu. My preference is natural, fresh, and the specials. My husband always gets a sausage pizza. We've never been disappointed. We always eat in the bar area so I don't know about the wait staff in the back area but between Andy, James and Shawn in the bar area we can't go wrong. They are wonderful to us and try hard to please all the customers......kudos to Stone Cellar!! It's our first choice! In fact we call it our date night out! Try it. If they're busy and you have to wait a bit it'll be worth it and drink another beer, they are more than tasty.

Stellar blueberry ale. Most beers were great. Food, however, left much to be desired. Bland and not consistent. Even with only half the restaurant full, service still took a while too (we ordered pasta and a burger). Might give another try, or just stop in for the beer...

  • D C.

I bought a 6 pack of their beer. Every bottle foamed all of the counter upon opening. To drink it I had to pour each 12 oz bottle into a half gallon picture and let the foam settle for a half hour before it could be re-poured into a glass. At what this beer costs I expect a quality product every 6 pack and every bottle. I will never buy their beer again.

Aptly named, the pub is in a poorly-lit cellar of an old building, but don't let that throw you off. Our server was very friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. Beers were good, especially the pumpkin ale, but I was a little thrown off by the light colored root beer that came with the flight. Cheese curds were good, but somewhat different than what I was familiar with. These were cut into squares rather than being chunky pieces, but the beer batter was great. My boyfriend and I both got side salads with our sandwiches, and we did appreciate the fact that the salads were composed differently, since he got a honey mustard dressing and I got Caesar. I feel like the chef here did a good job of thinking out of menu items. If we ever are back in Appleton, we'd probably stop in again.

MUST TRY THIS PLACE! This was our second time... if we lived closer we would be here ALL of the time! The food? Absolutely amazing. I had the special of the day: shaved steak sandwich (meat was a 2" pile on a pretzel bun) with siracha mayo -- I stepped out of my comfort zone when I ordered this - boy am I glad that I did! Husband ordered the bacon cheeseburger - juicy heaven on a bun! Beer? It's hard to choose between Houdini Honey and Vanilla Stout for me - but make sure that you go with several other people and have them order different beers so that you can try them all ;) We will be back for the food, the courteous/wonderful service and the great beer!

Great beer and atmosphere. Friendly service. Need to step up the food, though. My elk burger was DRIPPING blood and my son received about 8 french fries with his burger. That was a sparse side dish, and not on par with what others at our table received. Something like that should be consistently presented, and it shows that the kitchen is under staffed and/or just not paying attention.

I love the atmosphere at Stone Cellar. It's darkly lit and has stone walls (no kidding, right?). This isn't just any place to eat. It has a distinct character and atmosphere. The hostess seated our group of six downstairs. There were not very many other diners there for a Sunday lunch, but our service was not any more efficient as a result. Our waiter was friendly, even though he was not overly attentive. My boyfriend and I split a thin crust pizza, and I wasn't too impressed. I've tried just about every pizza sold in Appleton, and this one was very average for a thin crust. The crust was not both crispy and chewy, like most of the best thin crust pizzas. Instead, the crust was more cracker-like and tasted just a couple steps above a frozen pizza. It was pretty oily, too, even for a thin crust. This required a lot of napkin blotting! 2 stars for the pizza, 5 stars for atmosphere, 5 stars for awesome vegetarian options. I would love to come back here to try some of those veggie options, like the portobello mushroom sandwich. This is one of Appleton's solid restaurants and I look forward to coming back. Once just wasn't enough!

The fact that this place has such good reviews makes me feel a little crazy, but I don't have anything to go on apart from my personal experience: We started with the spinach and artichoke, which was barely warm and a little bland for my taste. I chalked it up to the fact that they were very busy. No big deal. I got my soup, their house corn chowder, before the meal. You would think that a signature soup would be good, but the chowder was SO thin and under seasoned, it was like frozen corn kernels thrown into a cup of hot milk. I had to load it up with salt and pepper to make it taste like anything, and even then I couldn't finish it. So maybe that's just me. Perhaps I need a little more salt and spice than the chef likes to put on the food. My companion agreed with my opinion, but none of this was really a problem. But the main course, which the waitress specifically recommended to me, was the Jaeger Schnitzel, and it was terrible. The pork was fried so hard and so dark that I could barely cut it with a knife. I ate two bites and gave up. The spaetzle was fine and the sauce was tasty, but by this time I was completely soured on the whole experience. I want to like this place. The server we had was top notch: friendly, attentive, etc. The location is great, the atmosphere is fine (church pew seats were uncomfortable, but whatever). Maybe I just need to find "my dish", but I don't know how many visits I'm willing to spend searching.

This place was great. In town for a night on business and sought out a local brew pub. Staff was friendly and the food was great... Amazing cheese curds, and I had beer jacket walleye with cheesy potatoes. The fish was fresh, the batter was perfect (not too thin, not to thick) and had a great flavor to it. Didn't need lemon, tartar or vinegar... As for the beer... The IPA was great, the honey wheat was good and the scotch ale, while not a traditional scotch ale (i.e. strong ale) was good and very drinkable. Overall a good meal in a really old, cool and unique building.

Unlike the others, I cannot say the cheese curds were the best. Good, but not the best. I prefer a sharper cheddar. I believe these were made with mozzarella. A little too mild to stand up to the marinara and ranch sauce they give you. I had the Tuscan chicken sandwich, which was excellent. Very good fries as well. Heinz organic ketchup? Really? Great choice! My brother enjoyed his Cajun chicken wrap. Potato chips seemed a bit bland. He rated the beer very highly. My favorite beverage, iced tea, was served out of a bottle, which gave me the "Uh oh. How much is that going to cost?". It was a half liter, unsweetened. $4. Service was excellent! And those who may need it, don't let the word "Cellar" in the name put you off. It is in the basement, but there is an elevator.

Traveling alone for work often sucks. Especially when you are eating alone. You feel like you have a giant LOSER hat on and its embarrassing, especially when the bar is full and you end up having to eat, alone, in a booth. So, this was my dining situation. I had read good things about the beers here on RateBeer, so I made the trek across the bridge from my hotel, and i am glad I did. The location - interesting, obviously historical, area. It was dark, and cold, and I walked. Under better conditions I would have checked out the area a bit more as it looked interesting. The building the place is in certainly is interesting, and the basement location is a neat space. The service - really good. The waitress did not make me feel like a dork loser, and even though she knew my tab was going to be small, I got as much attention as anyone else. She was fast, friendly, and made me feel welcome. The beer - I sampled a few, and drank two. I took a risk on the first one in the vein of trying new things, and that was a mistake. It did not suck, but I didn't like it (I won't say what it was because it is a preference thing that I did not like it, not any fault of the beer). Beer #2 was delicious (a wet hop). The food - I had a bison burger with bison bacon, and let me tell you, it was fantastic. I had desert too, and it was yummy as well. The food was outstanding. Overall, this was a dining experience I where I was expecting to get in and out as quickly as possible due to feeling awkward, and instead felt welcome and as a result had a nice dinner at a reasonable pace, and if I am ever back here I will most definitely return. Thanks Stone Cellar!

Stopped here and had dinner on a Saturday night while in WI for an NFL game. Half hour wait which was fine. We went upstairs and had a few drinks. The bartender was very knowledgeable. The fried cheese curds are to die for and our entree's were fabulous. I would eat there again in a heart beat. I had the bison burger and ate it all. Everything was perfect. Love love love. The building itself is very interesting. I can't say enough how much I loved this place. It's a must go. I will return next time I am in WI. Go Pack Go!

I am baffled by all the love for this place. Yes, they do have a five star collection of craft beers, they make a good fried cheese curd (an aside: get a grip it's only fried cheese sheeple!) and they locally source their food. Outside of those 3 positives, I have found the service to be terminally slow, the wait staff friendly, but a tad on the incompetent side, and the food average. The menu could be interesting (although it's a little heavy on fried items) but in reality, a place that makes makes a good snitzel probably hasn't mastered an Indian curry. The elk burger (ordered medium rare) was overcooked and tough because of that error. Elk is lean, you can't over cook it. The duck tenders were heavily coated and overfried. The grilled salmon was the highlight of the evening, presented simply yet elegantly. The walleye (fried) was moist inside yet had too much batter on the outside. The server forgot the 2 salads and soup that came with the meal, so I can't review them. Tip: go for the beer! The pumpkin spice ale and vanilla stout almost made me forget how mediocre this place is.

Great beers and locally sourced food. Some vegan and vegetarians options as well. The cheese curds are amazing. Must have. It is dark - it's in the basement, but it creates nice atmosphere. We come here once a month or so. They have a beer club as well. Nice benefits to that.

Stone Cellar is known for having good craft beer on tap and good food. My most recent visit did not disappoint. I had the opportunity to have a Rum Porter beer that was fantastic, and a few other interesting slections. The food overall was very good, though I only had a cheeseburger.

I've been to Stone Cellar three times. I enjoyed every visit. The first time I sat at the bar - solo - and enjoyed a flight of their delicious variety of brews. I ordered a Scottish Egg - which was perfectly prepared. I also ordered an Elk Burger which hit the spot. The next two visits were entertaining out of town guests. Both of these times, we ordered pizza and it was awesome. It was a perfect spot to take guests. The dining room and bar areas are very unique - truly like a candlelit cellar. The service on all occasions was friendly. The brew is fantastic. Everything I've eaten there has been excellent. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that it can be very difficult to get a table because the place is very busy. In addition, the dining area can be very loud and difficult to carry on a conversation. But - those aren't major issues in any way. Overall, Stone Cellar is a top notch spot.

Both a brew pub and a gastro pub. Very decent at both: In larger cities there are better brew pubs and better gastro pubs but rarely one that does both well -- this is one of my favorite places to eat in the Fox Valley area now. Beers: I've had the IPA (ok), Scotch Ale (good), Honey Wheat (very good), English Six Grain (very good), and Pilsner (meh). Food: Mac and Beer Cheese (excellent), duck fingers (very good), scotch egg (ok), Shepherd's pie (very good), fish & chips (good), walleye (good), grass-fed ribeye (excellent), and elk steak (ok). Sides (veggies and potatoes) were meh. Service is friendly and excellent -- the occasional very tiny detail missed (e.g., no steak knife or initially missing a condiment I asked for) but more than made up for with enthusiasm and friendliness. Ambience is cool... basement with old stone walls. Bar always has a decent crowd and dining area is quiet enough to have a conversation but loud enough to know you're at a pub.

As far as the food goes, I'd give it about a 3. It's good, but it's it's not that amazing. The star of this place though is their beer. It's some of the best you can get anywhere. The Vanilla Stout, Marquette Pilsner, Houdini Honey Wheat and the IPA are fantastic. Try a sampler tray and you will get a nice taste of almost everything.

Great ambience and fantastic food! Everybody at our table loved the Milwaukee schnitzel! Definitely going back. It's a bit pricey but fun for a nice night out and romantic setting.

Food: 5 stars. Beer: 3 starts. Walleye was wonderful as was the pulled pork sandwich. Salted carmel gelato was stunning. We had the beer sampler, which gives you a very nice selection, but beers were average at best. Pumpkin beer was the best, but it is seasonal.

Always a favorite of the Fox Valley. The food is ALWAYS amazing. I usually get Beer Mac or their Nachos. Service is ALWAYS great. And many many many microbrews to choose from!! Best part, you can take some home with you!! The only ONLY bad thing I can say is parking, if there is any.

Enjoyed a wonderful dinner here. We shared a steak, had a taste of the soup du jour, a custom cherry soda, and a scotch egg. Our waiter had his schtick down and was a delight. I really appreciated a taste of the soup since it was very spicy. He also willingly brought a taste of a beer I was interested in but opted for the custom soda. Lots of other people there celebrating events, but it didn't deter from our dinner. Visiting Appleton with the possibility of moving there, this restaurant gave us a very favorable taste of Appleton. No hesitation to try it again!

My family and I decided to have lunch here only because of the Yelp and Trip Advisor reviews. Home Run for us! The food is outstanding. We had the $10 beer sampler and shared it with 4 adults. The homemade root beer is phenomenal. The fact that they don't put artificial colors in it makes us and our taste buds happy. We ordered the Bison Bacon Blue Burger, children's chicken fingers, Organic Biergarten salad, 4 year aged Cheddar burger, and smothered blue burger. It was delicious. They also have a gluten free menu. As a food conscious person my family and I appreciate that they put an emphasis on organic, and sustainable foods as well as grass fed meats. I don't know when I will be back in Appleton but I will be sure to tell everyone I know about it. If you are reading this review and enjoy reasonably priced, healthy, and DELICIOUS food this is a must. Colin was a great waiter - thank you!!!!

Stopped in here for dinner with my wife. We're a big fan of gastropubs and this one is also a micro-brewery. Atmosphere is great. The building is very old and the bar and dining area are literally downstairs in a stone cellar. The menu is created using local products which is also a plus. I'm not a beer drinker but I did order their house brewed Root Beer. It was a lighter colored variety and it was very good. Unfortunately it came with no ice and the glass wasn't chilled so it warmed up pretty quickly while drinking it. We started off with the Scotch Egg which was good. The exterior was a little overdone so the breading was very chewy. It was served with a flavorful dark beer mustard. I elected for the Bison Stroganoff with spaetzel for my meal. The bison was overcooked and tough. Bison is very lean so it needs to be cooked to a lesser temperature than an equivalent beef dish. Medium to medium rare would have made for a wonderful dish as the gravy was quite good. Servers were very friendly and attentive initially but I ordered a second Root Beer that was forgotten about for several minutes. The server was very apologetic when she returned and realized that she hadn't brought it out yet. We will definitely come back for another round but they need to kick it up a notch. The concept is great but the execution fell a little short.

A really great beer and pizza joint. Dark, cozy, rustic. The Stone Arch beers are consistently good and they have a good selection of styles, usually with a seasonal. The thin crust pizzas cut tavern style are terrific--basic cheese and pepperoni to more exotic selections like andouille sausage and shrimp. I am looking forward to the outdoor seating this summer, too.

We went here last night when we got into town. For a small local hang out the food is excellent. I ordered the Brewers schnitzel, my husband and his parents ordered the deer goulash on special, and our friend ordered the beef stew and a Scottish egg. Everything was excellent. I am not usually keen on pork but I had a taste for it last night...I am glad I did. If you are in the area...check it out and know you can't go wrong with the menu.

My dad and I were staying in town for the Packers game and heard this was a good spot. We were not disappointed. In sum, very good beer, excellent food, and personable servers and bartenders. The Saturday night we were there was BUSY. A combination of Appleton's high school homecoming, Packers game the next day, and Lawrence students all created a perfect storm creating a one hour wait. Oh well, we waited it out at the bar, which takes me to the beer... REALLY good. My favorite was the IPA. The WI Pale Ale was also good. The bartender was nice enough to give me samples of several others as well. Now to the food... we started with the hummus and pita chips. I really liked it. The hummus was fresh and had a lot of flavor. For my meal I had the pulled pork. It was AWESOME. I kid you not, some of the best pulled pork I've had (and I've had my fair share of pork). My dad had the elk steak, which was also really good. I've never had elk before, but I liked it. Service was great. Our waitress warned us right away that the ticket times in the kitchen were a bit higher than usual because of how crazy they were, but in reality we didn't wait too long for the food. She was friendly and funny, so it was a good experience. There was also a manager-type guy with awesome facial hair running around taking care of various things. He was on top of everything and totally embraced how busy it was... way to go, my friend. So, give this place a try. Stone Cellar made for a great Saturday night in Appleton that was capped off with a Packers win the next day. Places like these are the type that people should keep around.

Been here a few times before. For beer - excellent. For food - not good. Had a ribeye that they charged $25 for. It was 1/2 inch thick and very tough. Asparagus was steamed and not seasoned - bland. Same with the steak. Very disappointed.

We went to Stone Cellar Brew Pub for Friday night dinner. We got there at 5:30 and it was already packed - almost always a sign of a good restaurant! Luckily they had a bar upstairs where we could hang out and wait until our table was ready. We were able to get their brew up there and my hubby had a chance to chat up the brewer - again we are beer nerds so it was super fun! The Pumpkin Spice was AWESOME! It is in my top 3 favs for Pumpkin beer. The English Six Grain was really good as well. Since there was 6 of us, we were able to try a number of different things. Being Friday and in WI, I had to try their Perch dinner and it was yummy! Would definitely get it again. One of my friends also had it and liked it a lot. I had their Sweet Potato fries and they were very good. Hubby had Navarino Farm's Chopped Elk Steak and he raved about it. Mom had Chicken Caesar salad which was huge so only ate half. Dad had Baked Haddock which he thought was really good. Another friend had Grecian Pasta Liguini which was really tasty as well. We shared Pumpkin Creme Brulee - very good!! Cost was very affordable - would definitely go back!

Great atmosphere for a local brew pub, at the base of the Skyline Bridge, with thick irregularly shaped bricks forming the 1858 built walls. Nice large wood deck fronting the entrance. Better weather and that deck would make for a good before dinner drink. Although busy, we had to wait only slightly. They took us without a reservation. A short time later, we were examining a full menu. The choices were a bit misleading. They offer 'range grown' beef on the menu, the waitress had to clarify that it was 'grass fed' beef. And it was excellent! Drinks were refreshed during meal promptly. Service was attentive and evenly paced. The sweet potato fries on the side, pleasing. Many beers offered. Since you can't drink them all at once, I guess I will just have to keep trying new ones on return visits. I will be happy to weave down the stairs that lead to the warmest cellar in town.

Was in town for business and the hotel staff recommended Stone Cellar. Love the outside decor and the repurposing of the building. Place has tons of character and enjoyed the winding stairs to get to the restaurant. Enjoyed the stonework and the layout of the place. Really enjoyed the atmosphere. Service is a little slow, especially for the Monday night I went. Started with a beef and barley soup. Broth was thick and flavorful. Good hearty flavor and lots of beef in it! Tried the jaeger schnitzel. I am a German food snob as my grandmother cooked the best schnitzel and bratwurst... My meal was really enjoyable. Schnitzel was thick but, tender, juicy, and enjoyed the breading as well. The spaetzel was really good and the grilled asparagus finished the plating! grandma would have been proud. Enjoyed the meal and will return when I go back to Green Bay...

It's my favorite bar/restaurant place in the Fox Cities. The space has character, the food is usually fresh, locally produced and tasty, they have a good menu variety, and of course there's the beer. I've tried most items on the menu, and while some are better than other --i think they do a fantastic Wisconsin-style thin crust pizza and the Mediterranean wrap is terrific -- I've never walked out disappointed. I'm not in love with all their beers, but their IPA and Vanishing Stout (and most of their seasonals) are solid. Plus, it's just good to have a locally brewed option within walking distance. The mug club is also fantastic, and the first one i've ever signed up for.

This place is fabulous. Though I regret missing the cheese curds, I went with the walleye. The fish was fresh and had a light tempura batter that was nicely flavored. Mashed potatoes were light and were served with melted cojack cheese. I had a scotch ale (delicious) and a seasonal organic. Both outstanding. The server, Caitlyn, was very friendly and attentive. Can't wait to return the next time I'm in Appleton.

Great patio unless it's 6-7pm, it's humid and there's no cloud cover. The sun sets RIGHT between the buildings, so avoid sitting near the door: There's no shade, no air movement, and a nice glare off the building windows so it gets really sweaty really fast. The awesomely cold beer helped a bit, but we couldn't stick around after our meal because we were melting. Speaking of which, the meal wasn't so great either. The spinach artichoke dip was grainy and seemed to come out of a can, and the burger I had was way over done. The place was pretty slammed when we were there so I'll probably come back again, but I wasn't impressed this time.

Well the pizza tour continues. We ordered the Cajun kettle chips for an appetizer. They came out cold and not very flavorful. We figured the chips would have been freshly fried then seasoned but they must have them in a bag in the back. One of the dipping sauces was good though. We then ordered our standard pizza. I would say it was a good pizza, it had a seasoning sprinkled over the top of it which added to it. I am not sure if the pizza would as awesome without it. My friend got a bloody mary and she said it was really spicy she also enjoyed the cream soda. The night we went the service was on time but the place wasn't busy and when it did get busy we saw less of the server. The bathroom is nice but a little hard to find.

This is one of my favorite places to eat and drink in Appleton. Their beers are always spot on delicious and their food is super tasty. Their beer garden salad is my go-to! It's full or different textures and flavors. The chef prepares a different vinaigrette everyday so it's always a surprise. Cool atmosphere in the basement. When it's nice out their patio is a perfect spot to chill and throw back a couple beers.

First impression was really cool, darkly lit stone walled place. Plenty of character, love the vibe. Some odd musty smells, especially the long hall to the bathrooms. The brewery hits you quite nice when you walk in, Good cheese curds, although I'm told by the locals that I dined with that they weren't "real" Wisconsin curds. Had a lamb shank, average,,,meh.. Biggest highlight by far for me was their great micro brews! Tried a a few, loved them all. Highlight was their hop laden India pale ale (ibu 55), English 6 grain ale was a close second, followed by the Scottish ale,,,,all awesome brews, will definitely return when up that far north again, new favorite up north for sure!

For the real Wisconsin experience, this is as good as it gets! I believe it's the first gastropub in Wisconsin. Their beers are great and so is their bison burger with a side of sweet potato fries and their six grain mustard. Don't find that on many menus.

My boyfriend and I visited last week to celebrate his first day at his new job here in Appleton. We sat out on the patio with quite a few other diners. We both loved our food - I had the cheddar burger and he had a BBQ pork sandwich. The cheese on my burger was amazing. We also ordered the pretel appetizer - I rarely find a pretzel I don't like, but this one was especially tasty. I didn't have any of their beer, but my boyfriend enjoyed his.

The IPA was the one I tried and it was not fantastic because the after taste hung around a bit too long but the food is very good. I thoroughly enjoyed the burger I had. Cell phone service is horrible as you are in a dark basement kind of setting with very thick walls.

First and foremost, if you are going to take reservations at all, make it worth it. If you don't take reservations on Fridays or Saturdays or same days, then what's the point of taking reservations at all? Once we arrived... Great first impression of the atmosphere. Dark, brick, great lighting style. The bar could be a bit bigger for a brewpub, but I can cope with it as is. There were 6 of us. We arrived in parts, so we took a spot at the bar until the whole party had arrived. The host was less than friendly and did not seem to appreciate us being there. He also looked a little lost. When we were sat, the waiter came over to take our order. He did not introduce himself, just asked for drink orders. He brought drinks, our cheese curds (YUM!) and took our dinner orders. Generally, when a dish has a soup or salad course, that course is brought out first, then the meal. In this case, everything (well, almost) was brought out at the same time. Not to mention it took over half an hour to get our food. And the server forgot a soup, a salad and the ketchup. Overall, the service was terrible. My return to this restaurant would be second guessed based on the service we experienced. We're still talking today about how bad it was. However, the food would bring me back ten fold. My Reuben was fantastic. Others in my group had the Filet, Bison Burger and Bison Stroganoff. All were very good entrees. Very disappointed in the fries, though. Seriously, frozen Reinhardt Fries? Ick. Buy some potatoes and slice them up.

If you are looking for something a little different and a restaurant that provides high quality locally grown and organic foods I highly recommend trying the Stone Cellar Brewpub. They are always featuring a menu that is refreshing and geared towards the seasons. Additionally, their everyday menu offers something for everyone. We have dined there twice now and have not been disappointed with our meals. They are currently featuring their Oktoberfest menu and because they are a brewpub who would not want to try their Stonetoberfest and Pumpkin Spice Beer, delicious.

My latest visit to Stone Cellar confirmed my previous observations. The atmosphere is still cool and dark with minimal distraction from TVs. I love the rock walls in this place. You must sit in the bar area for the best experience. I have never sat in the "dining room", but it does not look like I would enjoy it. The beer is still good. The Stone Cellar stout, Vanishing Vanilla stout, and the Tilted Kilt Scottish ale were all enjoyed. A special surprise was that they had Bell's Hop Slam on guest tap! You know I had to have one of those as well. For the first time since I started coming to Stone Cellar, we sampled the soda. The orange creme was very tasty. The blue raspberry was a little too much like Kool-Aid for my taste. I only took a few sips of each, but my companions that had ordered them seemed to enjoy them. Unfortunately, they were out of the root beer. Maybe next time. The service continues to be the reason that I cannot give Stone Cellar another star. Once again, the servers are generally pleasant, but I am looking for a little more attention to detail. I don't know if it is because I am not a regular, or perhaps I don't understand how service works in Wisconsin. It might also be that I usually sit at one of the high bar tables and they are too far from the taps. Whatever it is, the drink service is slow. At one point three of us were without beers for about 10 minutes. I went over to the bar and ordered myself. It was not very busy. I hate that society has decided that we must have straws in every glass of water. I hate it even more when I have to keep telling the server NO STRAW. On a related note, any fine beer place should understand the benefits of making ample water available. You don't have to assume that everyone wants water (although they should), but if I am drinking your delicious, high alcohol beers for hours and I order a round of water for everyone, then please keep it coming. I will tip accordingly. So despite the bitching, I do like Stone Cellar. I just cannot help but compare them to other places that I have been. Those places have a little something extra and they got 4 or 5 stars. So Stone Cellar just needs to step it up a little. I will definitely be back to watch for improvements... and drink some good beer of course!

If I could give 0 stars I would... Why? Because we NEVER got our food!!! It took 20 minutes to get our sodas, 35 for our salads, an HOUR for our all deep fried appitizer, and at an hour and 20 minutes- I wasnt waiting any longer. I called over the manager, and he didnt look surprised at all when I told him we still hadent recieved our food and how long we had waited. I asked for our check so we could go elsewhere, and he came back and said it was on him. Im 5 months pregnant-- I would have rather had my food!!! I dont think I will ever attempt to eat here again. Oh, and as previous posters have stated--- YES THE SERVICE SUCKS!!!!

The. Best. Beef, barley soup. Ever. I know it was made withe some of their favorite beers and chipotle spices. The beef broth was so full of flavor..it reminded me of the soup grandma used to make by boiling those beef bones and hocks.

Stopped here on a Sunday afternoon passing through town. As a former brewery over a hundred years old this is the perfect setting for a modern brewpub. Sampled a perfect kolsch, malty and delicious octoberfest and pumpkin spice. They offer growlers and pick a six of their beers pre bottled as well. They also sell a dazzling array of glassware and produce two beer mustards of their own for sale! The food is chef quality and far above the bar for brewpub grub. Cheese curds were unique and delicious above any I've tried in at least ten other places! All food is locally sourced and the menu options are staggering. I also met the marketing director who deserves kudos for the success of this brewpub and expansion of tap sales. He was knowledgeable of marketing and what makes beer good. I wholeheartedly support this establishment and wish them all the best in future endeavors!

My wife and I spent a day in the Appleton area, and decided to have lunch at Stone Cellar. First time visitors, we were immediately made to feel welcome by a very attentive and friendly staff. I am an IPA fan, and their offering was excellent! We both ordered the special, (recommended by our server) which was a shaved rib eye sandwich, and were treated to the best pub fare lunch we had ever had. We highly recommend this restaurant, and WILL be back the next time we are in the area!

With two kids who require a sitter, our nights out to ourselves are fairly far apart. The last thing we want to do is make a bad decision on a place to dine and be disappointed. I really wanted to try SC's vanilla beer so we gave it a try. Based on poor reviews of entree quality and service, we stopped just for drinks and an appetizer at the bar before continuing on to dinner at another restaurant that has never failed us. We sampled the vanilla and blueberry beers. Both were excellent! We also had the cheese curds which were BY FAR the tastiest pillows of fried, greasy goodness that I have had! This includes fair cheese curds. I know, bold statement right? I am a bit of a connoisseur. The service at the bar was fine. Not spectacular or overly friendly but nothing to complain about either. Also, the food passing through the bar window looked quite good. I cant wait to go back for more beer and curds. Perhaps we may try and actual dinner there. Not sure if I am willing to take that leap though. There are too many places in the valley that consistently perform.

I had pizza. Big mistake, it was not good. It was like frozen pizza, too heavy on the jarred sauce, and the crust? Just, no. It was like a cracker! I will have to search more for good pizza in the area. However, I had a blueberry wheat beer, and that was good. The bartender was friendly, as well.

This is one of our favorite restaurants. Had the veggie delight pizza today and it was awesome. The home-brewed root beer is delicious. And the home-brewed beers are excellent. My favorite is the Scottish Ale, and I very much enjoyed the Houdini Honey wheat beer. Service is excellent. The atmosphere is great! Do not miss this restaurant when you are in Appleton!

Epically terrible service! The food is just so-so. The scotch egg's not bad, the burgers are marginal. They have a fajita salad that's pretty good. I'd stay away from the BLT. When a restaurant screws up a BLT, you know they're doing something wrong. The worst part about Stone Cellar is this one awful bartender. She's very rude and ignores anyone waiting for a beer. We also all have Mug of the Month cards, and she's the only one who won't punch more than one month per night if you miss a month. The place used to be fun, but her smug I'm-the-boss attitude gets under my skin. No more Mug Club for us next year. The beers are decent, but the problem with decent beer is that you need a place to drink it. Maybe if their bar manager with the crimped hair gets the stick out of her ass, I'll go back to this place.

Great beer with a unique and eclectic menu. Food was outstanding all around. I ordered the duck tenders appetizer that was accompanied by a tasty spices Asian mustard. The order was a nice size not overwhelming and not leaving the plate looking sparse. For the entree I ordered the Bison Stroganoff. It was over German style Spatzel which gave it extra points for creativity and if you read my reviews I am a huge fan of Spatzel. Ordered two beers while their both were thoughtfully crafted and delicious. The first one was a IPA, nice and hoppy as a. IPA should be but not bitter which I liked. The other was a five grain ale, this was their flagship beer. I found this one tasty but it didn't have that burst of flavor that one initially gets from each sip of beer. It was more a consistent product through out leaving no highs or lows in the taste buds reason. I do not want you to mistake this for bland as it is not. I also had a sample of the house made ginger ale Because I was not in the mood for desert but still wanted something. It was real good. I never asked but it taste like it was made with fresh ginger and not some syrupy extract. Overall this place was great the menu had about 9 or 10 things on it that I would have loved to try that night but alas I could not. Try it out it's good food reasonable prices and tasty beer!

Yum, this place is great. The beer selection is really good (and you can buy $8 six-packs of all their beers - their delicious root beer is cheaper). I love the atmosphere (you are really eating in a stone cellar), and the food is pretty good and reasonably priced - the pizza, however, is really, really good, and is for sure the best thing they have. This place has changed names (and probably owners) like three times since I was a kid, but it's gotten better with every change, as far as I'm concerned. I remember a brief period in which they had an extensive selection of really bad Mexican food. Yech. Things have improved, for sure.

We've been here 4 times driving up from Madison pretty much just to have the beer mac & cheese and a beer, we've never had a bad experience until today. We arrived a little after 3 and the waitress refused to serve the beer mac because they were on the lunch menu still. I asked very nicely if she could make an exception and there was no question or checking, just a flat out no. After another 25 minutes of her avoiding us and getting our check for my beer so we could leave I asked to see a manager, I saw her just stand over by the bar not doing anything so I went inside and found Tim the manager. I explained him the situation and now we're only talking 30 minutes from their dinner menu and it was a flat out no. I've worked in the restaurant industry and this was no way to treat a repeat customer. I understand rules and procedures but at least go ask the kitchen or something, not just a flat out no, get lost. They definitely lost at least a customer today.

Chef Brady Ahrens is the chef here at the Stone Cellar, and he delivers up a menu that's definitely new to me. I've been here several times mostly for drinks, but I had to try more of the food after I saw the menu on the outside wall because "Reuben Shooters" $4.99 just popped out (or maybe it was my heart), and I had no freak'n idea what the hell that was. Luckily for me, I struck up a conversation with the couple that owns the map store in the building. They described it to me as a deep fried ball of corn beef hash! Now I'm not sure if that's what it is, but it was actually kind of good. I say "kind of "because it was different, yet it didn't suck. The other item on the menu that was HIGHLY recommended was the Scotch Egg which is a house favorite $3.99, and once again I was intrigued to try that out too. "when in Wisconsinsy, do as the Wisconsinites do". Ok, now you won't probably see this on any menu in California (or any other state West of the Mississippi??), but what it is, is a hard boiled egg with a sausage mixture coated with breadcrumbs, but like all things in the midwest, it's deep fried to clogged arteries perfection! Mmmh, mmh, good! Overall, I like this place because it's actually set in I guess what you would call a "stone cellar", and your surrounded by stone walls in a very dimly lit interior which creates a very intimate atmosphere that is very unique and unlike any commercial chain restaurant. I also suggest trying out the large selection of micro-beer.

I've loved all the food I ever had here. Creative, good choices. They make their own salad dressings. This is the only place I've ever seen a Scotch egg on the menu. Try it. The beers are good too, especially the fall varieties. Service is often poor at lunchtime on weekdays but is good otherwise. I like all the thoughtful extras in the washroom too! I've heard good things about the beer school.

My wife and I went here on a rare "Date Night" while we were on vacation in Oshkosh. We made the trip up to Appleton and I believe it was worth the drive. We enjoyed good food and good beer. The atmosphere was interesting. Dimly lit, but it was a cellar after all. The food was well prepared and of a very generous portion. The beers were tasty and for a good price. We met and spoke with a manage (Tim) who was very friendly and knowledgeable about his restaurant's beer. The server not so much. She had no clue about what we were drinking. She didn't seem to be aware of what beers they brewed upstairs. She had very little insight into what would pair well with our meals. Perhaps I'm spoiled by some of the brewpubs around me at home, but I feel the servers should know the beers as well as the food. We'll go back, but I hope they work on their server education before we do!

I gave this place more tries that they deserved. This is usually the kind of place I like but the micro-beers were just OK. The food and service both terrible. The service is especially poor, the servers couldn't have been more disinterested.

Food and micro-brew is very good. The only thing that I can say is I wish it was not in a basement. With that said they make the most of it being in the basement. It is very neat to see the old style foundation.

We went here for lunch yesterday. It had mediocre reviews but we decided to give it a try and see for ourselves. When we arrived, it was pretty slow - only 5 other tables. The server lead us to a table directly behind a party of 16 people. I felt kind of sandwiched in and it was very hard for us to hear each other over the large party so we were pretty much unable to hold a conversation throughout the meal. I saw many empty tables in the next room (only 2 were occupied) so I'm surprised they didn't give us a quieter table. We ordered the pub basket appetizer which was amazingly good. I ordered the Bison Burger and my fiancee ordered a regular burger. We both ordered them medium and mine was well done so it was very dry and a bit tough. My fiancee's was undercooked. The server was very friendly - when she was there. She didn't come back to check on us until we were almost done eating and with the dry burger, I would have appreciated a refill of my beverage. Overall I would say go for appetizers and skip the meal.

I've been here several times. The brews are a must try if you enjoy a good beer. I have yet to have a poorly cooked meal. Presentation on the plates is somewhat left to be desired on some dishes. i.e. the Walleye fillet. Also, the sides with some dishes are rather non-existent. They should re-work the menu to find sides that match the main course of the meal better. Instead of having just the main portion of the meal and one side. The other upside to the Stone Cellar is their use of locally raised/grown items on their menu. i.e some of the meats for the burgers and steaks. Their support for locally sustainable food is commendable, which is more than can be said for 95% of the other restaurants in the Fox Valley.
