I haven't been to The Refuge since the summer, but my craving for mac and cheese today got me thinking about this lil joint. Actually, it's one of the larger restos in the area, and it's equipped with a giant dining area to the left of the hostess station, along with a bar area to the right - with additional seating. This hunting cabin-esque eatery features some good local beers on tap, wine and cocktails. And the "Northwoods Bar" area offers happy hour Mon-Fri 3-6pm with $3 apps and $1 off all drinks. As for the fare, there's a variety of options, so everyone in your group will find something to their liking. I really liked the mac and cheese, cheese curds and the burgers. You'll also find items like pasta, pizza, fried chicken, steak - and a few random items I was surprised to find: fajitas, jambalaya and stir fry. ...Interesting. Check this place out and enjoy! My dad and I had attempted to eat here in years past but where unable to find a waiter/ waitress. We got in this weekend on our way fishing. The ambiance and everything was okay, but the food was poor. I had a bell peppers and beef type dish which was poor. I'm just beginning to cook and I had had my first attempt at cooking beef a few days prior. My first attempt at a similar dish was massively better that what was served here. The short version of this review is that while my dad and I are trying to eat better, we opted for the Taco Johns on the way back through town.

Very good Bloody Mary, great food, good service and awesome mounts. No reason this place should get anything less than 4*

Wow, where do I start? Although Refuge doesn't get "Woohoo! As good as it gets" or even a "Yay! I'm a fan", I can see the attraction, how-ever I will rate this establishment at an "A-OK". We recently visited Antigo for a family reunion. We took my 85 year old Mom back "home" to see the sights and attend the reunion. Refuge sounded great, although I did hesitate just slightly based on prior reviews. We went for a Friday dinner, arriving alittle before 6pm. the place was hopping, that's for sure. We were imediately greeted and sat at a very nice table. A server promptly brought us a loaf of bread and a plate of garlic dipping oil. Then we sat, and sat...... Probably 15 minutes or more before I went to the greeter and said to her, "we have been waiting 15 minutes without beeing greeted, and would really like to order drinks and food". Our waitress imediately came and appologized. We ordered a couple beers, a Bloody Mary, and Mom had an iced tea. My beer was about 3/4 full, but before I could complain, the waitress informed me that the keg had run out, I could start on this one, and she would bring me a second for free. Okay, I'm feeling better..... We ordered our food, my wife and I ordered the petite fillet, (both rare) my sister wanted the supper nachos and Mom ordered up the open face hot turkey sandwich. (she needed some comfort food) Our fillets came with salads, I had the ceasar and my wife had the standard with oil/balsamic. The salads were great. Our meals came in good time, My steak was perfect. My wife's was more medium than rare, but still tasty. My sister wasn't too happy with the nachos. She said they just kinda tasted blah. Mom's "comfort food" was "to die for". It looked good, and she was thrilled. Just what she needed. Our watress asked how our steaks were, and my wife did let her know about her's being just a tad too done. No big deal, just honest feedback. Well, our watress redeemed Refuge again, and comped us her beer as well. So, things happen. Nothing is perfect. And when a resturant and/or server makes things right, I just can't really complain. Thanx to our waitress, I would not hesitate in recommending Refuge. The service, (after a bad start) was excellent. The food was good, perhaps not spectacular, but priced right. The facility and atmosphere was clean and comfortable.

The service was very good. The prime rib was great and the drinks were good also. The price leaves a little bit to be desired though.

This is a place you can sit down and eat in a small town. ...You can also dine at the bar. The wait staff was very friendly but my dinner was below average. I had the hot turkey sandwich. It came with a fair portion of bland turkey, some lukewarm gravy with no flavor, and some mashed red potatoes. ...The highlight of the meal was the bread and garlic olive oil dip offered up as a welcome. The prices were very reasonable - so at least it wasn't an expensive lesson to learn.

Not a good experience, sat at a cocktail table for 10 minutes before figuring out we weren't going to be served. Went to hostess desk and waited another 5 minutes before being told it would be 30 minutes for a table. There was only one table in the restaurant. Finally got sat and the food was not good. Now I know why the deer on the sign is running away, this place is not good.

$16.95 for 7 shrimp and a few fries is ridiculous. No flavor to anything either. The service was great though!

This place looks cool inside and out, but I think that's almost the only positive. The atmosphere is nice. The prices are out of whack for what you get, and the last time I was there, I vowed never to go again. It was my friend's birthday and we sat at a table right in front of the server's view and waited for service for a very long time. It finally just ended with us leaving and not coming back. It might have been just a bad night with the service, but there was no excuse in my opinion since it was pretty dead. But other times, our bill was way expensive and the food was mediocre.
