While growing up in good old Antigo, El Tequila was actually a Hardee's. It wasn't until after I had moved away for college that El Tequila actually opened. That being said, it was a nice surprise when visiting the family. El Tequila has decent Mexican food. it's definitely the best in town (in my opinion) and the price point just can't be beat. Tonight when I got my bill I was confused because I saw the price for my margarita but I didn't see where I got charged for my meal. Turns out the "margarita price" was actually the price of my meal! Plus, the portion sizes are large and the food comes almost ridiculously quickly. The service is also superb, very friendly. The overall decor of the place is...bright and festive to put it nicely. It definitely gives off a casual vibe and is not a place I would choose to go on a nice dinner or a "night out". But, for a quick, casual meal it fits the bill. I think this place is great for Antigo as a town and the food for the price is pretty great. I would say that if you travel to Wausau you can find better quality Mexican food, but that would involve travel.

What a gem in northern Wisconsin! The food and service was superb and my whole family was pleasantly surprised. The Salsa was fresh, the chips were nice and warm, but the food was the standout. I had a relleno, beef enchilada and chalupa. So many flavors that led to an overall taste sensation. I can say the food was all fresh and the best part is if you don't like your selection, they will get you something else. Now that is service if you ask me. The restaurant is clean, bright and comfortable. If you are in the area or just passing through, Stop in and have a great meal.

Would be a one star, but its so stinkin' cheap, I'm going to give them some grace. The highlight of our meal was the margarita which was standard at best.

Very excited to find this here! Pretty authentic yet not too spicy for the newcomer. Lunch specials are a terrific value. We've both been to Mexico on various occasions (not tourist areas) so it is nice to find decent Mexican food, especially in No. WI. We will be back for the service and the food even though we have to drive an hour to get here.

Wow. I didn't have a good experience. The food was only okay. The waiters are running around like chickens with their heads cut off. One plate of food was literally tossed on our table in such a rushed fashion that I was afraid it was going to fall off. The guy was half way back to the kitchen by the time the plate stopped skidding across the table. My lifestyle takes me all across the US and I have eaten in many Mexican restaurants so I know that this is not normal service. I would probably go back if friends invited me to go, but there is another choice for a Mexican restaurant in Antigo that I will opt for. A drive to Wausau is also worth it for some good Mexican food and service.

A Mexican restaurant in northern Wisconsin? Correction: A *good* Mexican restaurant in northern Wisconsin? I kinda lucked out - didn't think I'd be able to get my margs and chips 'n' salsa fix while visiting this small, sweet town. But I did! This is one of three Mexican restos in town, and from what I hear, it's the best. Good drinks, really friendly service, and uber-colorful and festive decor, and a robust menu with all my Mexi favorites. It was hard to decide, but the cold made me crave something cheesy, melty and hearty (er, which is about any Tex-Mex dish), but opted for the Enchiladas Verdes with my choice of roasted chicken. That was some of the best shredded pollo I've ever had. It must've been marinated with all the rice spices and plenty of tomato and onion. Two thumbs up. And the frijoles were topped with - get this - crema fresca, not sour cream. What what? Too legit.

Drove by the place and saw they had 1.99 margaritas so we stopped in. They place looks just like every other Mexican place with all the bright colors and southwest theme. They brought out chips and salsa, and a bowl for each of us to put our own salsa in, something I have not seen before. The chips were good the salsa did have a good fresh taste but was lacking any 1 flavor that stood out. The first round of margaritas on the rocks were pretty weak but did taste good after a hard days work out in the field removing rocks. After the drinks we didn't see the waiter to much, and I was going to ask which was better the steak tacos or the topiciena(sp). When we did flag him down we just put in our orders to get things moving. I went with the steak tacos and my buddy got the chicken enchiladas with green sauce. The tacos came out first and I waited till his dinner came. The waiter stopped by to see how everything was but we still only had the tacos at that point and they were starting to get cold. A few minutes later the enchiladas showed up and we dug in. The tacos were good and the beans were OK, once again no real spice just mellow. When the waiter came back he said I had been shorted my side of rice, but I told him not to worry about it, and order another round of margaritas and this time they put some Tequila in them. The food was good, service was slow but in a small town if you looking for something other then pizza or one of the chains El Tequila is a OK option.

Love to find this little piece of Mexico in the north woods. I have read the other reviews and agree with most everything - not the best Mexican food I have ever eaten, but certainly the best in the north woods, and worth four stars. A fun, friendly, very bright (over the top) decor, excellent lunch time margarita. What's not to love. Started to give four stars, went to five because I believe in encouraging this out of the box (for the north woods) cuisine. Going back tomorrow.

I have family in Antigo, and when I roll through town I like to stop in here for some cheap Mexican eats. The food is so-so, pretty okay for Wisconsin Mexican. I'll eat it, but it's not the best this about this place. I've had quesadillas, tacos and their rice/beans all of which have been underwhelming. During my most recent visit the special of the day was $2.75 blended margaritas. Yes please! The margs were strong and yummy! The service here is pretty quick. I never had to ask for a refill because someone was always checking in on our table. I loved the speedy service!

This place exceeded my expectations, especially for the area. Fast, friendly service with reasonably priced food in a great location for passer-byes to stop in for a bite. I sampled the Huevos a la Mexicana: a decent sized portion of fried eggs, peppers, and onions with rice, beans, and corn tortillas. I must say, the hot sauce added great flavor to the eggs. Great cerveza and margarita prices, too - a daily happy hour from 2-5pm is pretty awesome. When I'm in town visiting family, I like to head here with the brosefs to have some good food and while not denting the old pocketbook too bad with an experience that isn't the same-old same-old in Antigo.

Fast service. Good portion sizes. Wanted the tilapia but was out. Shrimp was very good. Taco salad shell was crunchy but got soggy on the bottom from the chicken quickly. Very little lettuce, mostly shredded chicken in the salad. Salad was ordered with no dairy.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
